School’s IN – Be Alert

ike me, there are many parents out there who are back on the schedule of dropping off and/or picking up their loved ones from school. This means more kids and cars on the roads. We would like to remind everyone that speed zones are in effect now: school zones are from 8am to 4:30pm, during school days and playground zones are from 8:30am to one hour before sunset, seven days a week. Please drive safe and SLOW DOWN! For us Vancouverites, the closure of the Patullo Bridge during the summer months caused copious amounts of traffic in Coquitlam, New Westminster, and Burnaby. But most will be happy to know that the bridge renovations were completed ahead of time, something that doesn’t happen very often, and the Patullo is now fully open. In the coming weeks, our media team will be busy with more launch events in USA and Canada. We are very fortunate, and thankful to the manufacturers, for being invited to these events and be one of the first to view and drive new vehicles. Jeep celebrated 75 years of the brand and our team was invited to the event. Read about Chris’ 3 fun days at Jeep’s 75th Anniversary Event. Our feature story includes a first drive and review of the all-new 2017 Cadillac XT5, from beautiful Fogo Island in Newfoundland. In this issue, we also include reviews of the new Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid, Porsche Cayenne V6, and the 2017 Triumph T120 Bonneville. Of course, there are some great lifestyle stories as well. We welcome you to visit our new, completely redesigned website at www.rackandopinion.ca. Send us your feedback and let us know what you would like us to review. Tesla Working on New Vehicles, Including Heavy Trucks

E

lectric car maker Tesla Motors is working on multiple new vehicles, including heavy trucks and buses that could be unveiled as early as next year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company also plans a compact SUV and “a new kind

of pickup truck” to complement its existing fleet. Tesla currently makes a luxury sedan, the Model S, and a luxury crossover, the Model X. It plans to release a lower-priced car, the Model 3, next year. Musk discussed the products in his much-anticipated “master plan” for the company, which was posted on

Tesla’s website Wednesday night. It was Musk’s second such manifesto; he released the first in 2006, when Tesla was first starting out and hadn’t yet sold its first car, the Tesla Roadster. Musk used a portion of the plan to defend Tesla’s semi-autonomous Autopilot system, which can maintain a set speed and keep the car within its lanes and lets drivers take their hands off the wheel for minutes at a time. The government is investigating the system after a Tesla driving in Autopilot mode crashed into a tractor-trailer in Florida in May. The Tesla driver died. Musk says it’s important to deploy partial autonomy now because, when used correctly, it “is already significantly safer than a person driving by themselves.” “It would therefore be morally reprehensible to delay release simply for fear of bad press or some mercantile calculation of legal liability,” Musk wrote.

Honda Resumes Full Production at Quake-Hit Motorcycle Plant

J

apan’s Honda Motor Co. has resumed full production of motorcycles at a plant that was idled by major earthquakes in April. The company said Wednesday that it had “virtually normalized” production at the factory in Kumamoto, on the southern island of Kyushu, as of the day before. The plant was completely offline for about two weeks after the two major quakes, the strongest a magnitude 7.3, struck in mid-April, devastating the area and killing

50 people. It has gradually restored output, starting with parts. Honda said it was still working to fully stabilize its supply network for engine parts for mini vehicles, transferring some of the production from Kumamoto to a factory Suzuka, in eastern Japan. The motorcycle plant was severely damaged and initially it was unsafe to go inside to inspect it due to repeated aftershocks.

Mercedes Building New Car Plant in Hungary, to Employ 2,500

A

utomaker Daimler’s MercedesBenz brand says it will build a new manufacturing plant in Hungary by the end of the decade, investing 1 billion euros ($1.11 billion) and creating 2,500 new jobs. Mercedes opened its first plant in the Hungarian city of Kecskemet in 2012, producing 180,000 compact cars in 2015. Markus Schafer, head of production and supply chain management at MercedesBenz Cars, said the new factory would use a flexible work flow, allowing the assembly line to be quickly adapted to different manufacturing processes. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the government had offered Mercedes subsidies worth 12.9 billion forints ($46 million) for the plant, which will produce 150,000 vehicles a year. Szijjarto said the car industry was responsible for 31 per cent of Hungary’s industrial output in January-May this year.

Province’s New Climate Plan Good News for Drivers

BMW to Showcase Racing History With New Exhibition

T

he B.C. government has released their climate leadership plan, and news is good for drivers who want to go green. The plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80 per cent below 2007 levels by 2050. By applying the incentive based approach outlined in the plan, the transportation sector can continue to play an important role in greenhouse gas emissions targets. One of the key approaches includes the government will upgrade incentives for commercial fleets to convert to natural gas. It will also boost our low carbon fuel standard, which requires all gasoline and diesel sold in B.C. to include a certain percentage of renewable fuels. The standard will increase to 15 per cent by 2030. Probably one of the most important measures, however, is a renewed focus on incentive programs for electric vehicles (EV). The Clean Energy Vehicle for B.C. (CEVforBC) program is managed by the New Car Dealers Association of B.C. It encourages residents, businesses, organizations and local governments throughout our province to invest in a green ride by offering up to $5,000 off the pre-tax sticker price of qualifying new electric vehicles, and up to $6,000 off hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. So far, more than 2,700 zero emission vehicles (ZEV) have been purchased through the program and more than $12.5 million in incentives have been distributed through B.C.’s new car dealers. CEVforBC is often used alongside B.C.’s SCRAP-IT initiative, which offers various incentives if someone scraps a qualifying older-model vehicle. The aim of these programs is to get older, higher-polluting cars off the road and drive consumers toward zero emissions models. The new plan pledges to expand the CEV program with additional incentives and infrastructure, as well as an educational component and economic development. The climate leadership plan also helps break down another barrier to EV ownership - access to charging stations. Government support has led to more than 1,100 charging stations being installed across B.C. However, some regions within the Lower Mainland and the province as a whole still have limited access. As part of the new plan, the provincial government will develop regulations paving the way for local governments to require EV charging infrastructure in all new buildings. With more people adopting EV technology, additional stations will help current owners feel confident in their new car and motivate potential buyers to consider green rides. Proven approaches like incentive programs and charging station facilitation have already helped B.C. become a forerunner in Canada’s EV market. In fact, B.C. has the highest per capita sales of clean energy vehicles in Canada. These initiatives embrace the auto sector’s duty to combat climate change while promoting the continued success of this thriving industry. Supporting and expanding them is a smart investment in our province’s fight against climate change. With the backing of the B.C. government, the hard work and innovation of our auto sector, and the growing acceptance of consumers like you, electric vehicle sales in our province will be an important driver towards our emission goals. If you want to do your part in cutting emissions, visit your local new car dealer to learn what EVs can offer. B.C.’s new car dealers, such as Campus Nissan in Victoria, which has been selected to receive Plug’n Drive’s national Leading Battery Electric Vehicle Dealership Award for their electric sales efforts in 2015, are at the leading edge of today’s solutions. Keep up the great work! 8

new exhibition -- “BMW: 100 Years of Performance” -- set to open at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California on September 1 aims to highlight the German carmaker’s ontrack innovation as part of its centenary year celebrations. The cars assembled will include a 1970 Alpina 2002ti racecar and the year 2000 FW22 Formula 1 car raced by Ralph Schumacher as well as the original ‘M’ car, the 1979 Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed M1.In fact the entire curated collection -- which will be accompanied by a number of road-going classic BMWs, including a 507 Roadster -- is so rare and so important in terms of BMW’s racing heritage that they are rarely taken out of the company’s in-house collection unless for special race events. “The Petersen is honored to be able to play host to these incredible cars,” said Adam Langsbard, chief marketing officer for the Petersen Automotive Museum. “We’re proud to be able to work with such a dedicated company and group of people.” The oldest car within the exhibit, which runs until October 14, is the 1970 Alpina 2002ti raced by the likes of Nick Craw and John Morton It is the car that established Alpina as a race- and road-car force and which put BMW firmly back on the track. Staying in the 70s, the 1979 IMSA-specification 320i Turbo racer was a monster. Its engine was based on a Formula 2 M12 turbocharged unit and delivered over 600hp out of it. When the engine was redeveloped for Formula 1 it was outputting 1000hp. Not all of BMW’s racing exploits have been a complete success. The M1, unveiled at the 1978 Paris auto show, was the company’s first mid-engine car. It looked like a road-going supercar and was built as such for racing homologation rules. Yet despite its performance (0-100km/h in under 6 seconds) and handling, it flopped with customers. However, fast-forward 35 years and the car is a certified classic and one of the most sought-after of all modern-era BMWs.The display will also include the Jeff Koons Art Car, the fittingly sporty 2010 M3 GT2 that raced at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans. “BMW has built its reputation for performance on the track and on the streets with cars like those we’ll be displaying at The Petersen,” said Trudy Hardy, Vice President of Marketing at BMW of North America. “This collection of iconic BMWs demonstrates not only where we’ve been, but what the BMW brand stands for -- and will continue to stand for -- as we move into the next 100 years.”

Bombardier Recreational Products to Break into Motorcycle Business

B

RP, which already makes snowmobiles, watercraft and the three-wheeled Spyder, plans to launch into the motorcycle market with a bold growth plan. Company spokesperson Sylvain Morissette confirmed on Wednesday that the company is currently evaluating the market, the possibilities and trends after an industry analyst suggested the eventuality. BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products), which belonged to Bombardier until 2003, once sold Can-Am bikes in the 1970s. Morissette said that BRP considered several growth opportunities, but did not say precisely when the decision would be made, or when the products would arrive on the market. For the moment, BRP is focused on developing its existing products. Wednesday, the company presented three new 2017 models during an industry event held in Orlando, Florida. BRP will sell a vehicle coast-to-coast — the Can-Am Maverick X3 — a new watercraft, the Spark TRIXX and a limited edition of the Spyder, the Can-Am F3. The Can-Am Maverick is the third vehicle coastto-coast presented since last September. BRP is committed to developing its range of products every six months until 2020. The

Valcourt Quebec company expects to see its revenues increase by nine per cent annually to reach $6 billion U.S. dollars by the 2021 fiscal year. Analyst Benoit Poirier of Desjardins Capital Markets believes that the motorcycle market is bright. He estimates that BRP could eventually add $325 million U.S. to their annual revenue and gain three to five per cent market share. “This market is supported by a solid foundation, and we believe that BRP has the key elements in place to enter this sector, naturally or by acquisition,” he explained in a report. According to Poirier, 82 per cent of dealers of motor sports vehicles sell motorcycles and would be interested in purchasing new products. BRP has more than 4,200 dealers in some 100 countries. The company would benefit from its motor expertise and profit with their manufacturing operations in Mexico, Poirier indicated. However, Andy Galliher, president of Freedom Cycle in Concord, New Hampshire finds the sale of motorcycles very slow — except for dirt bikes. “I believe it’s a very difficult market to come up with a new product and many (existing manufacturers) have several years of experience under their belt,” he said in an interview.

F

ogo Island, Newfoundland – Many of us look to far-away, exotic places to get away from home for a vacation, when in reality, we don’t have to look any further than our own back yard (yes, that means Canada). There’s so much beauty in places to where few venture and I dare each of you to explore our own country, further than your own province. Thus, when Cadillac Canada invited me to Fogo Island for the launch of the new 2017 XT5, how could I dare say no? I had never been to Newfoundland, so this would be a double win for me. Fogo Island isn’t an easy place to get to – it took me three flights to reach one of the Eastern most islands of Canada. During the last leg, on a charter flight, the pilot circled over Fogo Island before landing; we thought it was for our viewing enjoyment, but he was actually

10

checking the runway for wildlife. What I saw from the window was an idyllic island, filled with miniature lakes, trails and a few roads. It was serene, waiting to be explored by a lucky few. Awaiting us, as we disembarked the plane, was a crisp northerly wind, and of course, a fleet of new Cadillac XT5’s. The 2017 XT5 replaces the outgoing SRX, with subtle yet noteworthy changes. It’s a great looking Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) and in this competitive segment, the XT5 is right on top for design. In keeping with the image of Cadillac, it’s contemporary and stylish, yet has soft edges. I’ve said it before and I’ll say this again: Cadillac’s design team is on it’s A-game and the XT5 follows the same footsteps as the new CTS, ATS, and CT6.

XT5

As we loaded our luggage into our assigned CUV and nestled into our seats, the XT5’s interior welcomed us with almost everything that could be asked for in this luxury vehicle. New buyers of a crossover utility vehicle are looking for tech and gadgets, and this new Caddy provides it all. At the centre of the dash sits a beautiful touchscreen that is powered by the newest version of CUE (Cadillac User Experience) software. I’m not a fan of this system; it’s all touch-based and works good, at best. Call me old-fashioned, but give me knobs for the basic controls and I’m happy. Thankfully though, the new CUE is much faster because of an updated processor – it’s the same one found in the new CT6. To make sure we didn’t feel disconnected on Fogo Island, the Cadillac PR team made sure every XT5 on the island had 4G connectivity, and yes, smiles were on all the journalists’ faces. Driving from the airport to the Fogo Island Inn was almost surreal. Watching movies and TV shows 12

depicting a fishing community do no justice to the sensation of being in the actual area. In one way, you jump almost 30-50 years back in time, thanks to the dirt roads, tranquil communities, and washed colours of buildings. Unlike some of its competition, we immediately noticed that the new XT5 delivered a very comfortable ride and of course, the Cadillac quiet we all come to admire. Even though our test vehicle was fitted with the large 20” wheel and tire package, potholes and road imperfections were easily absorbed. I found the seats to be comfortable yet supportive, great for short and long drives. Normal conversations were a breeze as well, thanks to excellent acoustic and general soundproofing. As I alluded to before, this Cadillac is filled with technology, and one of the coolest has to be Rear Camera Mirror (only available on the Platinum package), which provides almost 300 degrees of rear viewing. Rather than a conventional rear-view

Jag Dhatt jag@jgkmedia.ca

2017 Cadillac XT5 camera, flip a switch and a rearmounted camera provides a digital image on the rear view mirror. Initially, it’s kind of weird because you don’t see any of the cargo area, headrests, or rear passengers, but after a short time, it’s becomes a marvel. Since it’s a camera on the outside, it will tend to get dirty, especially during spring and fall, but not to worry as there is an

autowash system in place, perfect for the Canadian environment. I had heard about the Fogo Island Inn, an “inn” that has won an accolade of awards. Zita Cobb, a dot.com tech executive, wanted to put the community in which she was raised back on the map. Through her Shorefast Foundation, Cobb built the Fogo Island Inn, a design, environmental and technological wonder, sitting atop the barren rocks of the island. As we crested the hill, what loomed before me was utterly jaw-dropping; and in the foreground, a beautifully staged 2017 XT5. Words cannot do justice to this vantage point, and the folks at Cadillac couldn’t have chosen a more ideal location for the Canadian media drive. With hotel check-in complete, it was time to head out and explore Fogo Island in the Caddy XT5. Since this was an individual media drive, with no pre-set courses, there were ample opportunities to put the XT5 through the hoops. Fogo Island, as mentioned before, has a mixture of terrain, with mostly single lane and dirt covered roads. We couldn’t really test highway capability, but that wasn’t the point; we were here to discover Fogo Island for its beauty and this 2017 Cadillac made it a breeze. According to Cadillac’s Bruce Young, the XT5 is 292 pounds lighter than the outgoing SRX and a whopping 650 pounds lighter than a Mercedes-Benz GLE. Said Young, “a mixture of materials was used to reduce mass, yet at the same time, provide better handling and more strength” – and it showed. The XT5 felt solid, strong, without being overbearing. Since Fogo Island is a haven for

photographers, we had to make sure we got some good shots. Trust me, it wasn’t too difficult. But to get the spectacular ones, we had to take the XT5 off-road. With a ground clearance of 7.8” this Caddy took us through some challenging places – at one point, to capture a great shot of this beautiful CUV, we had to park it onto a rocky area. I was sure I was going to bottom out to get to this ledge. But nope, the XT5 climbed gracefully and planted itself with full poise. I was impressed! In another of Fogo’s areas, while driving to get an iceberg as a backdrop, we noticed the grass covered ground becoming soft. Again, our AWD model did not disappoint and we were able to get another great shot. Now, to be honest though, the XT5’s user adjustable AWD system probably won’t match up to that of a Jeep or Range Rover, but for most urban dwellers, it will be good enough. Power for the 2017 Cadillac comes from an all new, naturally aspirated 3.6 liter V6 that provides 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. It’s enough for every day life and should provide enough oomph for most drivers. The engine is mated to a new 8-speed transmission (not ZF) with Electronic Precision Shift, which reduces vibration and allows for smoother shifting. There is also a new Reverse location so that the driver is connected and knows that s/he is putting the XT5 in reverse vs pushing the lever to the old location. The 2017 XT5 is loaded with all the usual safety features that one expects in a luxury CUV. One noteworthy mention, that should be standard in all vehicles, is if the driver leaves the XT5 while the transmission is engaged, the vehicle will stop. I don’t see a scenario like this happening much, but when it does, this safety feature could avoid a potential accident. After a full day of driving through beautiful Fogo Island, it was time to head back to the Inn for some R&R and dinner. The best aspect of the 2017 XT5 is definitely its demeanour. After all, it is a Cadillac. Simply get it, close the door, and enjoy the vehicle because it boasts luxury. The 2017 Cadillac XT5 starts at $45,100. My choice would definitely be the fully-loaded Platinum, priced at $68, 595 but the best seller will most likely be the Premium Luxury package at $59, 830. As I sat in my room at the Fogo Island Inn, enjoying the view of icebergs floating by in the North Atlantic, it was obvious why the 2017 Cadillac XT5 felt at place on this island, a place even Hollywood A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow called ‘heaven’. The vehicle holds the classic heritage of the Cadillac brand, much like Fogo Island itself. At the same time, it’s new and daring, like the Fogo Island Inn, waiting for people come and discover. As I sipped my tea, I just enjoyed the best of both, the new and the old.

Beware of the Flip

n one of our previous articles we highlighted an area of GST compliance with regards to the rental rebate and how it might affect the average Joe. Given recent provincial regulation with regards to shadow flipping and the new 15% tax on foreign buyers, one would think that it is just a matter of time before a large host of tax compliance issues start making their way into the news. One of these areas will be GST compliance on the sales of assignment fees of contracts for real property by individuals and corporations. To enjoy the surge in market prices a common practice by individuals and developers in recent years has been to sell or “flip” the rights of a property to a third party to turn a profit. For individuals, this normally has involved the purchase of a condo unit where a deposit is made on the pre-sale of the property and then after a few months to recognize the gain, the contract is sold to a different buyer for a fee and recovery of the deposit. What most individuals do not realize is that the “gain” or “fee” portion of the sales price is subject to GST as the transaction involves real property as defined under both the Excise Tax Act and Income Tax Act, even if the unit is not finished. This same concept applies to contracts for bare land, commercial and new residential real estate where GST is applicable in normal cases, thus catching many developers and corporations under the same obligation. Granted, to the average real estate investor the above may not be anything new, but consider that the CRA is more likely to deem that you are obligated to pay GST on the entire value of the sale and not just the “fee” or “gain” of the assignment and now you have a serious tax liability on hand. The harm to you is that you would essentially be paying GST on your deposit for the property and after numerous flips on a single property there 16

Beware of the Flip exists the potential for double taxation. A recent court case Casa Blanca Homes Ltd. v. R. in 2013 directly addressed this issue whereby Casa Blanca argued that they should not have to pay the GST on a recovery of their initial deposit as it would not fall under the definition of a taxable supply under the Excise Tax Act but rather the definition of a financial instrument which is exempt from GST. The Tax Court of Canada found Casa Blanca correct in that it should only be subject to GST on the taxable supply portion of the assignment fee and not the initial deposit which also comprised the sale price. Unfortunately, despite the Court’s ruling, CRA has made it clear that if no formal documentation is apparent with regards to separation of the deposit and the fee on the sale of the assignment, it will still deem the whole sale subject to GST taking into consideration other factors. This makes it extremely costly to the taxpayer to appeal the decision. The risk to individuals and developers, regardless of incorporation or not, is that the CRA is aggressive on assignments and will often look into GST compliance long after the transaction has occurred. This leaves you the taxpayer at a high risk with a large tax liability if the sale of an assignment fee was not properly documented for GST purposes. As always, remember to consult a qualified tax professional with regards to your potential exposure and if there exist still options to correctly report any previously unreported GST.

lug in Hybrids are taking the automotive market plastic square right in the middle of the front grill under the Hyundai by storm. Gas prices have been skyrocketing and badge where the sensor is located. I spotted it a mile away and it oil is quickly becoming a rare commodity. It’s irritated me to no end. The least they could have done was make it only natural that automakers begin looking at other out of a matte plastic so light didn’t bounce off it making it look like options as society is becoming more “green “and a third headlight. The available colour options are actually quite nice, “eco-friendly” every day. In the last decade alone we’ve gone from albeit they are all darker shades. The Graphite Blue my test car was less than a handful of plug-in hybrid options to over 25 for 2017. In equipped with got quite a few nice comments from passersby. The inside of the car is where the Sonata really shines. It is a 2015 Hyundai released their version of a full size plug in hybrid, masterpiece of quality and functionality. If you remove the creatively named Sonata Plug-in Hybrid. Aimed at the larger sedan market, Hyundai is looking to compete the Hyundai badging I honestly would have thought I was in a much more expensive luxury sedan. The lack of a sunroof on such a heavily very wide and both the front and rear seats have massive amounts optioned car is a little disappointing but does give the driver a few of leg room. 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid yet you will never go back. Nothing cools you down quicker than a chilled bum. And as a bonus the center of the rear seat folds down as an armrest and a handy cup holder. For the size of the Sonata the trunk space is quite small, which makes sense because the batteries have to go somewhere. But the rear seats don’t fold down either so if you don’t have a friend with a pickup truck you may not be going to Ikea anytime soon. I was very impressed with the seamless transitions from Electric to Gas mode. The switch is so quiet and smooth I only noticed the change from the EV light in the dash turning on and off. The range on the battery packs was around 60 km’s at full charge and there was a 120V adapter in the trunk to charge at home. I’m sure it would take an overnight charge at the minimum with 120V because the proper commercial charger took 4 ½ hours to bring the electric system from empty to full again. The Sonata does have regenerative braking but I found it to be more for sustaining the battery as opposed to charging it. On the gasoline side of things, the 2.0L engine performed adequately considering it was lugging a 3500lb car around. The range of the gasoline engine was 849km indicated, but I never even had a chance to test that thanks to the electric system. In the week I drove the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid I was averaging 140 km a day and charging it while at work. After 7 full days of driving and nearly 700 km, I only used ¼ tank of fuel! That’s pretty amazing in my book. Now to the important bit, how much does it cost? In BC, the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid starts at $43,999. Well, I say starts because there are no other trim options only accessories. I realize that sounds like a lot of money for a Hyundai, but factor in the huge cost savings on fuel over the next 5-10 years and suddenly, $44,000 doesn’t sound so bad. And compare it to the price of the other plug in hybrids, the

Hyundai is a bargain. The fit and finish beats the Ford and Chevy competitors and the price is much better than the Cadillac ELR and Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid. Dollar for dollar the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid is pretty hard to beat.

GMC Canyon Named Best Midsize Pickup Truck of 2016 by Cars.com

T

he 2016 GMC Canyon has been named the Best Midsize Pickup Truck of 2016. Cars.com put the current lineup of midsize pickup trucks to the test in its Midsize Pickup Truck Challenge to determine the overall best option for buyers.

September / October 2016

Canyon, the segment’s only premium midsize truck, was also named the top pick by the editors of Cars.com in a 2015 midsize pickup comparison test. “Establishing a benchmark for a premium midsize pickup was our goal with the Canyon, and PickupTruck.com’s insights affirm our instincts,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “The Canyon’s quiet cabin, premium design and materials make it a maneuverable solution for customers who want the capability of a pickup with the modern amenities customers expect from GMC.” Testing included head-to-head comparisons in 18 objective categories and included the following vehicles: 2016 GMC Canyon, 2016 Chevrolet Colorado, 2017 Honda Ridgeline, 2016 Toyota Tacoma and 2016 Nissan Frontier. “The Canyon is an all-around great truck,” said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com editor-in-chief. “It is well-balanced and confident both on paved streets and off-road. It’s a well-appointed truck on the interior and has some serious ability when it comes to payload and towing as well as overall engine performance.”

EATING WITH PASH-ION

I

recently had the opportunity to explore a new territory for me which was Salt Spring Island. I had no idea of what to expect and booked only accommodations so I could immerse in to the local culture and take in everything it had to offer. One thing I noticed was there were no big box fast food restaurants. Not even a McDonald’s or Subway. There is a strong farming community, an outdoor market in the summer, lots of local artists and studios and a strong yoga culture. There is also no crime. We didn’t lock our accommodation doors as there was no need to, and enjoyed belonging to a unique and friendly environment for a few days. When walking through the downtown area of Ganges we stumbled on Tree House Cafe. What makes it unique was that it’s built around a plum tree. All of the tables were full and there was a wait to get in. I immediately declared that I had to sit by the tree to eat. Tree House Cafe makes their food from scratch. Don’t expect it to come out fast. I had breakfast and it was the longest wait I have ever encountered for breakfast anywhere. It takes time to do things from scratch. In the meantime as I waited, I took photos seated next to the tree that the friendly locals offered to snap for me. The eggs and bread were locally sourced in my breakfast. The bread was from local Embe Bakery which is baked fresh daily. The menu offers gluten free options, the seafood is Ocean Wise Seafood and the beef is hormone and steroid free. On Wednesday through Sunday evenings Tree House Cafe offers live local music. The band was playing a song about not feeding the

local birds when I walked by in the evening. It reminded me of “Smelly Cat” sang by Phoebe on the television show Friends and I laughed at the bird song when I heard it. The bands draw a large audience and no reservations are taken, so if you want to enjoy eclectic music under the stars then you need to get there early or be prepared to wait. Tree House Cafe is licensed and offers locally sourced drinks. There is craft beer from Salt Spring Island Ales and also coffee from the Salt Spring Coffee Co. Local wine is also available from vineyard Garry Oaks. The most interesting drink on the menu by far was the Guayaki Brand Yerba Mate drink. It seemed like everywhere I turned on Salt Spring Island someone was carrying a can of it. We stumbled on it in the local grocery store Country Grocer. A local man approached us immediately when we picked up a can to read the ingredients and he said he loves the drink and has a can before he goes bike riding for a big energy boost. He stated it had more caffeine than a cup of coffee and it was natural. I found the drink had an almost cult like following on the island. The drink is also available on the mainland at multiple health food and grocery stores. Tree House also offers smoothies and another local feature is Salt Spring goat cheese. There is not a French fry in sight on the menu. Instead kale slaw, kale Caesar salad and green salads are offered as side dishes. Salt Spring Island is a fun and safe place to visit. It’s like being transported back to the 60’s or early 70’s but with today’s technology. It was a time before car doors or front doors had to be locked and kids could play outside with no fear. It’s a place where your kid’s bicycles can lie outside on the grass overnight and not be stolen. Places like this don’t exist anymore, so it was a pleasant surprise. If you visit, be sure to drive slow as there are deer wandering around and we encountered quite a few. Tree House Cafe is one of the most popular spots on the island to dine. With local sourced ingredients and meals prepared from scratch with love, you will enjoy this one of a kind setting within an honest down to earth community. It’s like playing tea time in your tree fort as a child with all the kids in the neighbourhood. If you’re lucky like me you might get seated right next to the tree trunk and enjoy some laughs and hopefully no birds perched above you. September / October 2016

2017 Maserati Levante

I

f Porsche and Bentley can do it, why not Maserati? We’re talking about ultra- luxury SUV’s coming from brands that are known to build impressive sports cars. Maserati’s all new Levante, named after the Mediterranean winds, is here to make its presence. Maserati expects to sell close to 30,000 units in its first year; that’s a pretty impressive expectation since the brand sold a total of just over 32,500 vehicles last year, world wide. Based on the Ghibli, the Levante will only be available in a 2+3 configuration; need more space, look elsewhere. Although I haven’t spent much time with the Levante as of yet, depending on view angle, it can look like a Cayenne or Infiniti. But in all honesty, it does look much better in person. Power for this Maserati comes from a twin-turbo 3.0 liter V6, of which there are two variations: the 345hp or the 424hp. Both variations of the motor are linked to an 8-speed ZF transmission. What’s more, Maserati made sure that the Levante would be a capable off-roader, just in case – enough said.

ith over 113 years of building great motorcycles, Harley has again come up with a great option for a budget motorcycle. There are a lot of people who want a Harley, but don’t want to spend upwards of $25K on one. The new Roadster is a 1200cc bike that has a combination of retro look and feel, mixed with new technology. Based on pure looks, the Roadster is a great looking bike, with some great paint and graphics schemes. Add on the blacked-out styling and slammed handlebars, and you’ve got an aggressive bike that will perform like it should. Up front, there are 43mm inverted forks with massive triple clamps, powerful dualdisc front brakes and new dual gauge instrumentation to complement the iconic fuel tank and chopped rear fender. Seating position on this bike should be comfortable and confidence inspiring for most riders, with a seat height of at 30.9 inches. The engine is born from the legendary Shovelhead and Ironhead power plants; thus, you know you’re getting massive low-end torque and a soulsatisfying sound. I can’t wait to ride it.

2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

S

ince the early 1960’s, Carroll Shelby has been building and modifying performance cars for Ford, most notably the AC Cobra and the Mustang Shelby GT350. Although it wasn’t a Shelby, who could forget Eleanor, the famous 1967 GT350 from the year 2000 hit movie “Gone in 60 Seconds”. Speed up to 2017 and be ready to be blown away by the new Shelby. The heart of the 2017 Shelby is in the 5.2L V8 engine with a flat-plane crank that churns out 526 hp. The motor is matched to a worldclass TREMEC 3160 6-speed manual transmission that gives an amazing 429 lb-ft. of torque. I’ve had the press car for only 2 days and let me tell you, this is what a true muscle car is all about. If you thought that the 5.0 V8 was fast, this takes power and speed to another level. The MagneRide Damping System monitors and adjusts itself thousands of times per second, giving a phenomenal ride and control. Brembo calipers are used to make sure you stop this pony on a dime. And of course, adorning this beauty of a vehicle is Shelby GT350 badging. 24

hen you take a proven family sedan and make it better by giving it more power, better fuel efficiency, and more cargo room, you pretty much have a winner. The made-in-Japan Accord Hybrid is now competing in a class that has more hybrids than we’ve ever seen before. For 2017, the Accord Hybrid will have 212 combined horsepower, which I’m sure this will get the car from 0-60 mph in sub-7 seconds. This should be better than most other hybrids in the class. And it’s not all about power of course because the Accord has always been about reliability, engineering, and simplicity. Add to that great styling and as in the past, this sedan will sell well again. Of course, as in the past, next year’s Accord Hybrid is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ because the active safety tech package will be standard on every trim. I won’t lie here: the Honda Accord has always been a favourite of mine because it is an attractive, solid, and reliable sedan offered at a great price that most average families can afford and will be happy with.

no further than the Grand Cherokee, which has since moved even further upscale to compete with those European brands, at a lower price. An optional height-adjustable air suspension gives the Grand Cherokee extra ground clearance for crawling over rocks and through deep mud and water, and the available diesel engine generates big torque to haul this heavy SUV up and over steep inclines. But the Wrangler, which remains the most straightforward model in the Jeep line, proved that simple is often best, especially for an inexperienced off-roader like me. With my four-door Wrangler Unlimited’s transfer case locked in 4WD low, I discovered I could make it up steep hills with very little throttle input, and strong engine braking allowed me to crawl down the other side without needing to touch the brake pedal. This in a mid-range Sahara model, not the Rubicon version with its tougher tires and heavy-duty mechanical components. By contrast, the Wrangler is a pain on paved roads: It uses a lot of gas, subjects its occupants to all kinds of road and wind noise, and its uncommunicative steering quickly becomes tiring on highway drives. If the Wrangler was once the best example of a highperformance SUV, German models such as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG rewrote that playbook. Jeep responded in 2006 with the Grand Cherokee SRT8, powered by an engine borrowed from Dodge muscle cars and built for paved roads.

Suddenly, Jeep had an SUV for drivers whose lifestyles involved a need for speed. The current version is a mean-looking truck that uses a 470-hp V8, big strong brakes, and a surprisingly agile suspension, all of which we put to work at Calabogie Motorsports Park. The SRT8 proved a worthy weapon on that challenging racetrack, where it felt far more at home than a 2,300kg SUV has any right to. It’s one thing to want to present an image of the kind of lifestyle a Wrangler lends itself to, but quite another to have to live with its compromises every day. Hence, the modern-day Jeep lineup includes the subcompact Renegade and the compact Compass and Patriot. Like the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, they combine some off-road ability (even the little Renegade is offered with a Trailhawk off-road package) with daily driving comfort and refinement, not to mention fuel economy. The Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SRT8 are by far Jeep’s most compelling vehicles, each commanding respect for different reasons. But it would be unfair to ignore the smart business decisions that have given this company a foothold in more mainstream segments with vehicles like the Cherokee and Renegade. These budget-priced vehicles let people own a piece of Jeep’s storied heritage, even if they don’t aspire to scaling rock faces or racetrack heroics. Lifestyle brand or not, Jeep’s continued willingness to expand its portfolio of vehicles beyond the utilitarian trucks on which it built its reputation has been fundamental to its success. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next 75 years will bring.

Dangerous Gases in the Garage

Dangerous Gases in the Garage

H

ow many times do you start your automobile or motorcycle while it’s still parked in the garage? I know I’ve been guilty of this practice on occasion, even though I know I shouldn’t. Vehicle emissions consist of several major gases, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapour, and carbon monoxide. Due to these gases, starting up your vehicle in an enclosed space can be dangerous. In enclosed spaces, like a garage, these gases can build up to dangerous levels and all but one of them (water vapour) can cause serious problems. All of these gases, in addition, contribute to the greenhouse effect, trapping the sun’s light and reflecting it back towards earth. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most common by-products generated by a motor vehicle’s engine and accounts for 82% of total CO2 emissions in the US. Since the late half of the 20th century, concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased from 280ppm to ~370ppm. While CO2 is an important gas produced by the body and is widely used in the food and chemical industries, at higher concentrations, it exerts a toxic effect at the cellular level. Concentrations above 10% may cause convulsions, coma, and death. Large amounts of CO2 are produced via a combustion engine and because of this, are very dangerous in confined areas. Nitrous oxide (NO2) accounts for 6% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the USA, but it has a significantly larger impact on the environment. The warming effect that 1 pound of NO2 has on the atmosphere is over 300 times greater than 1 pound of CO2. NO2 can irritate the lungs and lower resistance to respiratory infections. As well, it can affect DNA production and the immune, neurological, and reproductive systems. These effects can occur from both short term and long term exposure to the gas. Carbon monoxide has a relatively small effect on the environment, unlike other emissions; however, it has significant health risks. Carbon monoxide reduces the delivery of oxygen throughout the body and elevated levels can cause visual impairment, reduced dexterity, difficulty performing complex tasks, and poor learning ability. As carbon monoxide builds up in your blood, it replaces the oxygen that is normally carried and can cause drowsiness, seizures and death. It is carbon monoxide that is called the silent killer because you can’t see it or smell it. When we think of either cooling our vehicles in the summer or warming them in the winter, never start a car in any enclosed space unless you plan on moving it right away and there is proper ventilation. 30

Create the Ultimate Man Cave: Tips on how to build your very own man-friendly space (NC) Today, every member of the household is seeking a retreat of their own. Mom has the ultimate in pampering with her deep Jacuzzi tub with scented candles. The young son may have an arcade room, where a flat screen sits proudly mounted on the wall. But what about Dad? “Creating a ‘man cave’ is such a fun way to give a nod to Dad and offer him a tailored room for personal space,” says Sally Morse, director of creative services at leading window treatment company Hunter Douglas. Below, Morse offers tips on how to build the ultimate private man cave. Fashion and Function Don’t overwhelm the space with too many bells and whistles – the inspiration is, after all, a cave, the most basic of dwellings. “Try to make every piece go double duty, like a luxe-looking card table that also works for drinks and snacking,” Morse advises. Playful Accents “I like to always ask about favorite childhood memories or hobbies that evoke a feeling of comfort, and brainstorm ideas from there,” Morse says. If your man spent his summer breaks sailing the seas, for example, try a ship-shaped chandelier. The “T” Factor From James Bond’s luxurious hideaways to Batman’s dark lair, a common theme occurs: technology. “Home automation systems are always impressive and fun,” Morse notes. “They also make living in any space seamless and easy.” The Hunter Douglas Platinum App, for example, can be integrated into existing systems or be used on its own for a taste of home automation at a fraction of the cost. The app allows mobile device users to adjust their window treatments with the tap of a finger. Move all the Hunter Douglas window dressings in the home at once or by room, at the same time or one shade at a time, and by “scenes” you can pre-set, such as “movie night.” You can even activate the timer feature to set the shades in motion while you’re away. Morse also recommends Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades with the Blockout System that eliminates light gaps for complete room darkening and privacy. With these handy tips, spend less time creating and more time enjoying your man cave. www.newscanada.com 32

MG MGB By: Jag Dhatt

rowing up in a small town, there weren’t many cars that really attracted my attention. My uncle had a ‘67 Mustang Fastback, that he was supposed to pass on to me; unfortunately, the car ended up wrapped around a telephone pole. Then there was the 1987 Grand National, my all-time favourite and one car I’m still looking to purchase. But then, there was this little car that really put “fun” to another level – the MGB Roadster. First produced in 1960, the MG lineup was the child of the British Motor Corporation, later British Leyland. A neighbour of ours had the 1973 MGB model, which replaced the outgoing MGA, and it was such a coollooking car, one I wished I had when I got my driver’s license. But alas, my dream was not to be as we bought a Chevy Citation – not a cool car that makes any statement when it’s driver, aka me, is in grade 11. Anyhow, going back to the MGB, the car was powered by a 1798 cc BMC B-Series engine that produced only 95 horsepower, but it was all fun power, easily capable of moving the car to 100 mph. The MGB was a pure two-seater, compete with reclining option to, you know, gaze up at the stars at night. The steel dashboard encompassed the necessary gauges. The ’73 model year carried the same new fascia introduced the year before and also the single piece full length chrome bumper. The chrome bumper only lasted until 1974, when it was replaced with rubber to meet impact regulations. Regardless, you could always change it back to the chrome as it was a simple bolt-on replacement. Variations of the MGB came in the form of the Roadster and GT versions. Unlike it’s siblings, the GT featured a 2+2 configuration, in which you could now take the entire family and some luggage. However, the GT didn’t have the same “cool” factor as it’s drop top roadster. Another offering that put smiles on drivers’ faces was the introduction of the V8 in 1973, thus labeling the car as the MGB GT V8. Under the hood was the aluminum block 3528cc Rover V8 engine that was able to push out 180bhp, but only after Ken Costello made his modifications. The MGB was a memorable and fun car that made buyers out of many enthusiasts. Production lasted until 1980. While in grade 11 and packing my new driver’s licence, I had visions of driving an MGB because it was a fun, cheap car. Unfortunately, the Citation was even cheaper. September / October 2016

My Top Picks

My Top Picks Anthony Jarantilla Vehicle Installation Manager Visions Electronics, Surrey

I

n this article I’ll be going over my top picks for mobile electronic equipment; however rather than going over a lot of technical jargon and specifications, I’ll get right into the features, and why I prefer these products. Head Units- Alpine CDEHD148BT and Kenwood DNX893S The head unit is the brain of your audio system. Having a good quality head unit not only allows you to enjoy your music more with better quality audio, but enables more functionality and safety from your driving experience. For single din head units, my top overall pick is Alpine’s CDEHD148BT. This unit has Alpine’s iconic sleek look, and a button layout that has been around for a long time because it works. The main buttons are easily accessible for daily operation, and the display is simple and easy to read. The deck, having Bluetooth connectivity, will also make sure you’re safe on the road by allowing you to talk hands free, keeping your hands on the wheel. The CDEHD148BT is for people that want audio quality as well. There are an abundance of audio features to allow you to tune your audio system, whether it’s just 4 speakers or you have multiple amplifiers; you can build and expand your system with this product. For double din head units, the Kenwood Excelon DNX893S is a fantastic piece of hardware. It’s not the most expensive navigation unit you can buy, but it’s definitely one of the most fully featured ones on the market. We’re in such an exciting time for displays because now, units can interface with newer cars. Not only can you get great audio quality with this unit but you can now see vital vehicle information (depending on the vehicle). This is a big plus for truck owners who tow because now, owners can view gauges on the head unit. Wouldn’t it be nice to know your transmission temperature or EGT’s at a quick glance without having to buy an a-pillar gauge pod? And the best part is, when you get tired of it, you can change the gauge to something else, by going into the settings. Don’t forget about available safety features like adding a backup camera for parking and using Bluetooth connectivity for hands free operation of your phone. Sub-Woofer- JL Audio W1 If I were only allowed to pick one sub-woofer to use in a variety of applications and price was a factor, I would choose the JL Audio’s 34

September / October 2016

W1. It is one step up from their entry level sub-woofer (the W0) but it has a lot of the key features from their midgrade woofer, the W3. The W1 is very forgiving when it comes to volume needed to work efficiently in an enclosure, physically it takes up very little space, while its shape makes it very easy to install into tight places and requires very little power to run efficiently. I have installed this sub in a variety of enclosures, both custom and pre-fabricated, and it is a great sounding sub. Now, it’s not the loudest sub on the market, but if you’re looking for good sound quality that kicks decently hard and doesn’t burn a hole in your wallet, this is the woofer to get. Amplifier- Alpine PDX V9 Now-a-days, everyone is looking for better audio quality and they want it to be tucked away, out of sight. Five channel amplifiers are my top choice for type of amplifier, because you spend a little more than a midgrade mono block, but have the ability to amplify your speakers in one unit. My amplifier of choice is typically the Alpine PDX V9. The V9 is by no means a budget amplifier; it definitely will take up a lot of room in your sound system budget. But it’s worth it. It puts out enough power to satisfy the requirements of upper scale speakers and has enough grunt to fire up a midgrade subwoofer, like JL’s TW12 or run two entry level 10 inch subs like W1’s. This is one versatile amp in a compact package that isn’t too amperage hungry, and thus, doesn’t beat up your charging system. Quality, performance, style and value. What more could you ask from an amp? Speakers- Hertz Energy Series Speakers are in interesting topic, because as you buy higher quality speakers, you need to buy more items to hit that speaker’s sound quality potential i.e. amplifier, sound deadening etc. Now, I do recommend you always buy those other products (because I want you to have the best listening experience) so my top pick is Hertz Energy series speakers. The Energies a r e great because they sound good on a head unit alone but sound great with an amplifier. These speakers are very clear and have the ability to produce a decent amount of mid-range bass in the appropriate environment. If you’re looking for a better replacement speaker or you’re building up a sound system these speakers will deliver excellent sound quality.

The Great Debate: Front-Wheel, Rear-Wheel, or All-Wheel Drive?

W

ith winter around the corner, drivers should know how their vehicle will handle in various situations so that they can be prepared for poor weather conditions. “While modern anti-lock braking system, electronic traction, and stability control technologies all provide added grip and handling regardless of the drive wheels, the driving dynamics of each vehicle are unique,” says Jacob Black, senior editor at autotrader.ca. He explains the pros and cons of each type in easy-tofollow language: Front-wheel drive. FWD is the most common configuration in modern passenger vehicles. They’re less expensive to produce and offer a more efficient use of space since there’s no driveline routed through the cabin. With the engine usually located in the front of the vehicle, this setup also offers good traction from a standstill in snow and slush. Rear-wheel drive. RWD is most often found on pickups and performance-focused sports cars or sedans. Pickups benefit from it when carrying a heavy load in the bed or towing. RWD in a

performance car allows for more ideal handling dynamics and balanced weight distribution. But it can also provide less traction in slippery conditions and tends to oversteer when applying power during cornering, which some find unpredictable and unnerving. All-wheel drive. Just as the name states, AWD systems are capable of delivering power to all four wheels, many of which are now able to divert additional traction from front-to-back or side-to-side, depending on conditions. Offering wellbalanced driving dynamics and traction over a variety of road conditions, AWD also tends to suffer from higher fuel consumption due to the added weight and components. The verdict. While all-wheel drive generally offers the best grip, it has a few shortcomings and can create a false sense of security. While there are theories about the optimal drive, a lot depends on the vehicle and its intended application. In many cases, having good tires is more important than which wheels the power is coming from. Remember that no matter what you choose, in the end it’s less about what you drive than how you drive. www.newscanada.com

What’s Hot This Season:

FALL MAKEUP MUST-HAVES

F

all is an exciting time when it comes to makeup experimentation. Taking into account some of the bold silhouettes, unconventional hues, and avant-garde materials exhibited on the world’s fashion capital runways this season, the statement looks for fall are anything but understated. Key beauty looks for this fall encompass a clean and flawless complexion, a heavy stroke of eyeliner, and deep wine-hued lipstick.

Amisha Sampat

The Breakdown: 1. A Clean and Flawless Complexion: A natural looking polished finish is crucial in providing balance with some of the bolder and deeper tones you’ll carry off this fall season. Note – there is a key difference between a natural-looking clean face, and a face that has been masked with layers of foundation, which makes the overall appearance look heavy. To achieve subtlety, blending is key whilst applying foundation and concealer. A natural looking clean face can provide a healthy balance for a deeper more bolder lip tone. It’s wise to replace your summer foundation with one that is one or two shades darker caused by darkening of the skin from the summer months. 2. Heavy Stroke of Eyeliner: We all know the difference one stroke of liner, be it cat-eye, winged, or regular, can make in transforming and enhancing your overall look. Fall is the perfect time to try a dramatic line that goes above and beyond your usual eyeliner look. For more precision, lift the upper part of your eye with the other hand and create the look in ticks. Volumized mascara creates the perfect finish. 3. Deep Wine Hues for the Lips Wine the new red for fall? Without a shadow of doubt. Wine-tinted lips were the hottest beauty looks on the runways this fall, and are easy to pull off regardless of your skin tone or age (it’s a myth that older women cannot pull of darker hues of lipstick, go for it!). Be sure to pick a shade that compliments your skin tone, and doesn’t end up looking too harsh. Combine with a nude eyeshadow and a matte finish to complete the look! 36

our hundred Dallas Cowboys edition Ford F-150s are ready to take to the gridiron – a touchdown for Ford and the Dallas Cowboys, and the ultimate ride for Texas football fans. “It has been 22 years since Ford and the Dallas Cowboys offered a Cowboys edition F-150,” says Greg Wood, Ford Dallas regional sales manager. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the opening of the Ford Center at The Star and the beginning of a new Cowboys season than to offer fans of both F-150 and the Dallas Cowboys the opportunity to purchase one of these incredible trucks.” Texas is the nation’s largest truck market and Ford F-Series is the best-selling truck in Texas. Ford has a longstanding relationship with the state – from working with the Dallas Cowboys for more than two decades to its longstanding ties with King Ranch, a Texas institution. The foundation of this limited-edition truck starts with a Built Ford Tough F-150 XLT with Chrome Package (the No. 1 volume seller in Texas) painted in legendary Cowboys helmet silver. In addition to the standard features of the F-150 XLT series, unique content for the Cowboys edition truck includes: • Exclusive Cowboys edition star badging on front doors and tailgate • Blue-white-blue rocker panel striping paying tribute to team’s over-the-top helmet stripe • 20-inch chrome wheels with unique Cowboys star center caps • Molded heavy-duty cargo bed mat with iconic Cowboys star logo • Laser-etched chrome foot plates featuring legendary Cowboys word mark for front doors • Cowboys edition logo stitched in front and rear floor mats • “1 of 400” Cowboys edition interior badge autographed by Jerry Jones – owner, president and general manager for the Dallas Cowboys “Everyone in our organization is excited about the new Dallas Cowboys edition F-150,” says Jones. “Ford F-150 and the Dallas Cowboys are known worldwide for their rich heritages and long winning traditions. Our Cowboys fans are among the most passionate in all of sports. We are proud to partner with Ford and Texas Ford dealers to bring this Cowboys edition F-150 to our incredible fans. ith new variants seemingly getting added to the North American lineup every year, like the plug-in SE Hybrid a couple of years ago and most recently the punchy GTS, a bit of the shine may have been taken away from Porsche’s standard V6 Cayenne. I recently had the chance to take the wheel of the company’s gateway-graded SUV to see if it’s still relevant in 2016 — and was surprised at what I found. Using the term “entry-level” may sound like an oxymoron for any vehicle wearing the crested badge, but as with most luxury marques, almost everything save the steering wheel itself seems to be an add-on padding the MSRP of $67,400. For instance, the sunroof? That’s an extra $1,360. Any exterior colour other than black or white? Another $910. Upgraded BOSE audio? $2,280. It has been some time since I’ve driven a Porsche where the centre analog clock was a normal clock rather than a stopwatch, as bundled with the optional and performance-boosting Sport Chrono package often installed on the higher trim levels. The base doesn’t really get anything else to help it go faster, as consumers will have

to move up to an S model or beyond for that. The looks department remains largely the same since the crossover entered generation two in 2011, undergoing a complete

makeover. Originally introduced in 2002, the Cayenne was met with considerable controversy over the fact that a) Porsche deviated from its traditional sports car recipe and b) it resembled a portly goofyfaced box on wheels. Among the many enhancements, the body was sharpened and made sleeker all around. At the nose-end, the headlights were reshaped to resemble those found on its siblings such as the 911 and Boxster, and the low and high beam lenses were pushed further apart for more differentiation. The overall vehicle became about 48 millimetres longer providing a leaner silhouette and closer family resemblance. Higher grades levels like the GTS received a mid-cycle refresh last year lending the Cayenne an even meaner appearance, something the V6 40

unfortunately has to live without. I actually discovered, particularly in case of the champagne-shade Palladium Metallic paint colour of my press tester, that I didn’t attract an inordinate amount of attention on the road given the brand. The engineers stretched the wheelbase 41 mm to increase cargo room and rear passenger interior space. Occupants who came along for a ride encountered no issues regarding comfort as the bench seat can slide back-and-forth, as well as recline in three different settings. The seating position up front is equally as optimal, affording a great view of the road without the associated sensation of opearating a bus as found in other SUVs. In standard Porsche fashion, the key fob — shaped like a miniature P car — is inserted and turned to the left of the steering wheel rather than the conventional right side. I recently learned at a company media event this convention has roots dating back to the early days of 24 Hours of Le Mans, where racers had to run and hop into their vehicles and thus saved time by starting the engine with their left hand while selecting a gear with the right. But I digress.

There’s not a whole lot to report on in terms of powerplant changes for the V6. The 3.6-litre mill makes 300 horsepower @ 6,300 rpm, and 295 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000 rpm, managed via an eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. The output numbers are a bit deceiving because the crossover moves quite well for its size, capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in the 7.7 second range and topping out at 230 km/h. Porsche’s active all-wheel drive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch geared towards a rear-drive bias, only transferring power to the front when extra grip is required. This both allows a dynamic driving experience and helps to keep the weight down. Along a similar vein, the chassis is now also 145 kilograms lighter compared to before, something that is definitely felt anytime it’s tossed into a corner. I found myself piloting the vehicle more like a 911 than an SUV and it handled all of my aggressive inputs without even so much as a tire squeal. One additional benefit to being less heavy, of course, is improved fuel economy. Other technologies designed to reduce gas consumption include standard auto engine start/stop and a special coasting feature designed to decouple the motor from the transmission when the driver lets go of the accelerator, letting the Cayenne continue moving under its own momentum instead of being bogged down by engine braking. Working together, I netted an average fuel consumption of 15.3 L/100 km in combined city and highway driving. So is the V6 version of the manufacturer’s best-selling premium SUV necessary in this day and age? I say indeed, since people can still enjoy the opportunity to own a practical and sporty precision German machine at a much lower price point than a Turbo or GTS model. And when it comes to a Porsche, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with entry-level. September / October 2016
