Editor’s Note

ith summer holidays ending and time for back to school for most students in BC, we remind our readers to pay attention to school and playground zones. Respect the 30km/h speed limit and be watchful of kids. As the NDP government had promised, on September 1st, tolls were lifted from both the Port Mann and Golden Ears Bridges. This will mean more use of both bridges; at the same time, traffic congestion on the old Pattullo Bridge should also be greatly reduced. Whether this move to lift tolls makes economical sense can be debated, people who must use the bridges on a regular basis are very happy. In this issue, we drive and review some pretty great vehicles. I was invited to beautiful Whistler, BC to drive the all-new Mercedes E400 Coupe. Sandeep looks at the new Volvo V90 Inscription, while Aman reviews the Acura MDX Hybrid. Finally, Chris gives his thoughts on Volkswagen’s newest SUV, the Atlas. In addition to reviews, there’s many more great reads. Finally, we say goodbye to our dear friend, Richard Pickering of BHG, who succumbed to illness last month. Richard will be dearly missed. Drive safe, ride safe, and be aware of others on the roads.

Nissan Canada Announces Sponsorship of Bryan Baeumler from HGTV

N

issan Canada announced today that it has entered into a three-year sponsorship agreement with Bryan Baeumler of HGTV. In honour of this sponsorship, Bryan and his wife and costar, Sarah Baeumler, will experience and drive a 2017 Nissan TITAN XD Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel and a 2017 Nissan Armada.

A veteran contractor, Bryan is considered to be Canada’s number one expert in Do It Yourself (DIY) projects. A natural-born teacher, the award-winning host has been educating and entertaining viewers across Canada and the U.S. for over seven years on the hit shows House of Bryan, Disaster DIY, Leave it to Bryan and most recently, Bryan Inc. “Bryan Baeumler’s commitment to deliver consummate professionalism and top-quality workmanship on every single job is an ideal parallel to the attributes of the Nissan brand,” said Steve Rhind, director of marketing, Nissan Canada. “We are proud to work with Bryan and Sarah, and look forward to seeing the 2017 TITAN XD

Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel full-size pickup truck and 2017 Armada full-size SUV put to work. Both the Nissan TITAN XD Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel and Armada offer segment-leading features to suit all of Bryan and Sarah’s towing, utility and overall driving needs.” The House of Bryan series chronicles Bryan and his family as they juggle the day-to-day life of running a construction business while building their own properties. Fans watched in record-numbers as Bryan built his first family home, a northern retreat and most recently a country home. All three seasons of the series were the number one rated show on HGTV Canada. On Disaster DIY, Bryan waged war on building shortcuts and taught wellintentioned DIY-ers how to bring their renovations back on track with a little tough love and a lot of humour. Then in Leave it to Bryan, the veteran contractor helped renohungry homeowners prioritize the room they need, over the renovation they want. In Bryan’s current show, Bryan Inc., Bryan and Sarah take on an entirely different relationship: boss and employee. Sarah joins Bryan’s busy construction company as a project manager where they buy, renovate and sell homes together. “Nissan is a brand I have always admired because of their bold design, durability and consumer-focused capabilities,” said Bryan Baeumler. “The Nissan TITAN XD is already an integral part of my construction business. Without a doubt this truck is the most important and versatile tool on and off the jobsite.”

BC Ferries to Ban Smoking, Staying in Cars on Closed Decks

B

C Ferries will ban smoking on all ships and at all of its terminals by January 2018. They will also forbid passengers from remaining in cars on closed decks during sailings starting in October. In a release, BC Ferries says the smoking ban came from provincial regulations that increased no-smoking buffer zones from three metres to six metres around any “doorway, intake or open window” to a public space or workplace. They say buffer zones of that size are impossible to maintain on vessels and decided to extend the no-smoking policy to terminals as well. “This new policy supports the health and wellness of our customers and employees, as it helps control their exposure to secondhand smoke,” said BC Ferries President and CEO Mark Collins in a statement. “We continue to focus on improving our customers’ experience, and providing the safest working environment for our crews.” BC Ferries originally announced the changes in December 2016, but put them on hold a month later.

New 2018 Ford Mustang to Feature Quiet Exhaust Mode scheduling their car to start, minus the roar.

S

omeone called the cops on Steve von Foerster. The former head of vehicle engineering for Ford Motor Company wasn’t thrilled, but he understood why. On an otherwise peaceful morning in his suburban Detroit neighbourhood, von Foerster had just backed a Shelby GT350 Mustang out of his driveway. As the car’s V8 engine thundered, an annoyed neighbour set aside their coffee cup and dialed 911. Von Foerster had left before the officers arrived, and he didn’t end up with a ticket. Nor did he get angry. What he got was an idea for the new Mustang. “I love the sound of the V8, but it can be loud, and you can’t annoy people like that in your neighbourhood,” said von Foerster, who now leads Ford’s user experience team in product development. “It sounds so cool, but I thought, ‘There has to be a way to give people more control over the engine’s sound.’” The experience fueled a discussion between von Foerster and fellow Mustang program team members that led to development of Quiet Exhaust mode and industry-first Quiet Start, known as “Good Neighbor Mode” among Mustang engineers. The new features on properly equipped 2018 Mustang GT vehicles allow drivers to keep engine sound at a minimum if they wish and to program quiet start-up times in advance. While some sports cars offer active exhaust systems with on/off functionality, Mustang’s Quiet Start is the first to allow scheduling of times. Using steering wheel-mounted thumb controls, drivers toggle through a menu in the instrument cluster to select when they want to fire up their Mustang GT without sharing the event with neighbours. For example, between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., drivers can keep the peace by

Both new Quiet Exhaust mode and Quiet Start features will be part of the available active valve performance exhaust system on the new Mustang GT, along with different exhaust volumes for Normal, Sport and Track modes, giving customers more choice than ever before. “Active valve performance exhaust gives Mustang owners the best of both worlds – that classic Mustang sound, and the ability to not wake up your neighbours when you leave the house early in the morning or arrive home late at night,” said Matt Flis, Ford exhaust development engineer. Neighbourhoods across the country should be thrilled. According to a recent poll by Ranker.com, loud engine revving ranks among the most annoying noises neighbours make, alongside other common nuisances including power tools, barking dogs and band practice. Only early-morning lawn mowing is more robustly despised. With new Quiet Exhaust mode and Quiet Start, Ford is doing its part to keep the peace. “When sounds get up into the upper-70-decibel range, that’s typically about when they start to bother people,” said Flis. “With quiet start activated, the decibel level of the new Mustang GT drops by about 10 decibels, to a much more comfortable 72 decibels – about the level of a household dishwasher.” On Mustang GT equipped with the available all-digital 12-inch instrument cluster, the exhaust mode menu appears within the pony menu. With the standard 4-inch cluster, exhaust mode is found within the settings menu. Active valve performance exhaust is one of many changes Mustang fans will see when cars reach showrooms later this year. In addition to its restyled exterior design and refined interior, Mustang will offer an all-digital 12-inch instrument cluster, a 10-speed automatic transmission, MagneRide™ damping system and SYNC® Connect with FordPass™. With its new Drag Strip mode, Mustang GT now reaches 60 mph in under four seconds – faster than a $94,000 Porsche 911 Carrera – setting a new standard as the quickest Mustang GT ever.

Ford Reveals Industry’s First Police PursuitRated Pickup Truck – the F-150 Police Responder

F

ord is revealing the industry’s first pursuit-rated pickup, the 2018 F-150 Police Responder, giving law enforcement agencies a more versatile and capable patrol vehicle. Capable of speeds up to 160 km/h (100 mph), the all-new F-150 Police Responder features a powerful and efficient 3.5-litre EcoBoost® engine and Ford SelectShift® 10-speed transmission,

DRK’s Latest Buzz plus four-wheel drive for all-terrain police performance. The truck offers 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque – more than any other pursuit-rated police vehicle. Based on the F-150 FX4 off-road model, the Police Responder’s 145-inch wheelbase sits on a high-strength steel frame, and features Ford’s high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy SuperCrew body – giving it the largest passenger volume, payload and towing capacity of any pursuitrated police vehicle. The truck features best-in-class front and rear shoulder and hip room, as well as rear legroom. “Ford’s 2018 F-150 Police Responder is the perfect allterrain law enforcement vehicle,” said Stephen Tyler, Ford’s police brand marketing manager. “Aside from its industryfirst on-road pursuit capability, this purpose-built pickup can comfortably seat five, while providing capability in off-road patrol situations for officers in rural environments patrolled by sheriff’s departments, border patrol operations and the Department of Natural Resources.” Additional F-150 Police Responder performance enhancements include a police-calibrated brake system with upgraded calipers and pad friction material, upgraded front-stabilizer bar for improved braking and handling and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. An upfitready interior features a column shifter with centre-seat delete, heavy-duty cloth front seats with slim bolsters and anti-stab plates, vinyl rear seating and heavy-duty vinyl flooring for easy cleanup. A high-output 240-amp alternator is included to support on-board electrical devices, along with a police-calibrated speedometer, and engine hour and engine idle hour meters. Underbody skid plates protect the truck from curbs and rough terrain. A standard class IV hitch gives F-150 Police Responder best-in-class towing capability of 7,000 pounds. F-150 Police Responder joins the broadest lineup of law enforcement vehicles in the industry. From its Police Responder Hybrid Sedan – the first pursuit-rated hybrid police vehicle – and market-leading Police Interceptor Sedan and Utility, to the Special Service F-150 and Expedition, Special Service Police Sedan and Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle, Ford offers the right vehicles for a variety of law enforcement needs.

ne of the most common questions I get asked when people learn I review cars is, “What car or truck should I get for my family?” Now, as many of you know, I’m single and without children, so I can’t tell you whether or not it’s easy to change a diaper on the tailgate or put in a child seat. Honestly, I wouldn’t even know where to start but that’s what YouTube is for. What I can say is that the 2017 Acura MDX SH might be one of the best SUV’s I’ve ever driven. This SUV received a 5-star safety rating, which means your family will always be safe. The MDX is also backed by Honda, one of the largest and most

reliable automotive manufacturing companies in the world. So, not only will you make it where you need to go, but you’ll never have a problem getting the service and support you need. But, what is it that makes the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid so special compared to everything else on the market? Acura has really pushed the envelope when it comes to styling. Ever since the brand started, Acura has aspired to be their own brand. And why not – Acura needed to stand out from its Honda brethren. But more than that, Acura was looking to attract business from the German and high-end market at the same time. In my opinion, that is exactly what they did. Now, I do realize

that Acura’s major competitor in this market is Lexus, but Acura showed up first, and did they ever run with it. Everything about the MDX just oozes class. The MDX Hybrid I was testing was black on black; I couldn’t help but stare every time I walked away. It felt like I was rolling up in a Mercedes G class, even though it’s a Honda in

a Tuxedo. Acura pioneered the LED light market with their multi LED headlight design. Like looking at a diamond studded watch, you can’t help but stare, it just grabs your attention. The sharp body lines, sleek styling, and 20” wheels really complete the package. To be honest, the only thing I don’t like about the MDX is those silly fake exhaust tips built into the bumper. I know most brands are switching to this style and I still don’t know why. They’re as bad as putting fake covers on your brake calipers so it looks like you have Brembos. Now most of my friends and coworkers looked offended when I mentioned that this MDX was a hybrid and I don’t blame them one bit. Hybrids have come a long way in the last decade or so but most still leave a lot to be desired. Typically, the transition from gasoline to battery isn’t smooth, the small gasoline engine has to work twice as hard because the electric motor can’t keep up with the power demands from the user. I’ve even seen cases where the hybrid gets the same or worse fuel economy than the gasoline equivalent. Thankfully, this Acura MDX Sport Hybrid was the complete opposite. I picked up the MDX in Richmond and reset all the fuel indicators. From Richmond, near the auto mall to my office in Port Kells (a 42km trip with stop and go traffic) the MDX averaged an astonishing 5.9L/100km! Full disclosure though; I was purposely driving with economy in mind to see how low I could keep the number. That being said, traffic came to a crawl for a solid 10km due to a stall on the bridge so it’s hard to argue either way. After a week of driving in town and another 500km under my belt, the average came up to a very, very respectable 9.1L/100km. For a seven-seater, full-size SUV, that is pretty amazing. The 3.5L gasoline engine gives plenty of power and sounds fantastic. The

all-wheel drive system is faultless and I think a real contender to Audi’s Quattro system. This may be one of the best Hybrid Drive systems I’ve ever driven. The interior is where the Acura MDX really shines. Beautiful soft leather seats with white stitching and piping look great and are softer than baby wipes. Both front seats are heated and cooled, the rear seats are heated, as is the steering wheel. The dual screen display in the center console is easy to use and the touch pad on the lower screen vibrates when you touch it, like most new smartphones. The dash and cluster are laid out beautifully and the center information screen can be customized to show whatever you’d like. For some reason, Acura is really sticking to their push button style gear selector. It’s not that it’s a bad thing – it’s just really weird, coming from an enthusiast’s point of view. Having a tab for Park, a different shaped button for reverse and a weird lit button for drive doesn’t seem so bad. But when you’re in a parking lot, trying to maneuver into a tight spot, it gets annoying real fast. I’m all for innovation and change, but baby steps! There’s plenty of leg room in the adjustable second row, and a massive TV screen to keep the kids quiet on road trips. The third row is pretty tight, more so than I seem to remember. Getting in and out is a little awkward but it seems that the floor has come up nearly a foot from the previous model. One of my close friends has an older MDX and I know I can fit back there just fine. Now it seems I have to saw my legs off and throw them in the trunk – I guess kids will be okay though. Small price to pay for the fuel savings in a Hybrid (assuming that the space is taken up by the batteries) but if having a comfortable seven-seater is a must, then that may be the breaking point. Trunk space is pretty standard for a seven-seater and the all too common power tailgate works great. I really hope there’s an option to turn the one million decibel beeper off when you activate it though. Nothing like going to put groceries away and scaring the person in the stall next to you at Superstore… With the seats folded down there is more than enough trunk space and to be honest, if I ever needed a people carrier, I’d just get the five-seater. Back to the original question: “What car or truck should I get for my family?” Each person has different needs, must haves and tastes, but that’s why we have so many automotive brands to choose from. I’ve driven enough cars and trucks to be able to give most people a fairly decent idea on what vehicles would work best in their situation. I know I don’t have the family experience a lot of people do, but I do have plenty of friends and family that do. I absolutely love the MDX but I wanted a family man’s opinion. One of my closest friends bought a new MDX in 2014 when he had his daughter. Now he just had a son, and he said he couldn’t imagine buying anything else. What more is there to say?

he Plymouth Barracuda is undoubtedly one of the most beloved muscle cars of all time. With Chrysler now revived and going strong, their newly up and running SRT division is getting ready to release several new models. If the new 2014 Viper is any indication, these upcoming cars could potentially become game changers in terms of performance, quality, and value. Needless to say we’re stoked. But let’s look back once again at one of Chrysler’s most coveted vehicles. Sadly, their Plymouth division is long gone but there was a time in which some of the most famous muscle cars bore the brand’s badge. The Barracuda, many will argue, was one of their finest models as it combined all of the essential muscle car traits - often a smaller car with a large displacement engine. Although it was discontinued back in 1974, the Barracuda has forever been in the hearts and minds of countless fans. In 1996, those fans were given the pleasure of seeing a Barracuda convertible appear on television every week in the hit series “Nash Bridges”. For the course of six seasons, Nash Bridges (played by Don Johnson) and his partner Joe Dominguez (Cheech Marin) solved crimes and cruised the streets of San Francisco in Nash’s yellow Barracuda. For the #1 car used in the early seasons, it began as a 1970 ‘Cuda with a 340 V-8 and a four-speed manual transmission. For filming, the car was converted with a higher output 360 V-8 and updated with a 1971 ‘Cuda bodywork, including a Shaker hood scoop to simulate a Hemi. When the show ended in 2001, the final ‘Cuda had the 360 swapped for a 426 Hemi crate engine, definitely making it more fun to drive. Like Nash Bridges, cars have been a central focal point in other notable TV series, most notable being The Dukes of Hazzard, Magnum PI, and Knight Rider. In addition, movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Days of Thunder, The Italian Job, the Fast and Furious series and of course, Transformers, have shown off a variety of newer and classic cars. We look forward to more TV shows and movies that highlight cars, trucks, and motorcycles. 20

eeping classic cars is fun and satisfying. Below are 4 of the most useful tips for optimal classic car maintenance. Proper storage The fist tip for maintaining a classic car is to store it properly. It has to be protected from the outside elements to prevent rusting and other problems that the changing weather can bring. If you plan to keep your car inside the garage for a specific amount of time like say, all winter, be sure you’re doing the right things like draining fluids, greasing and waxing to maintain its beauty. Wash your car regularly Washing your classic car regularly not only keeps it clean, it also helps in preserving the essential parts like paint and other body parts from deteriorating if done properly. Using the right kind of car shampoo is important because it contains less salt that may be helpful in cleaning up your car but it can also remove the car’s protecting polish. Using different sets of towels for each specific part could also help in reducing damage done by washing. Change the oil regularly Changing a classic car’s engine oil in a regular basis is important for your vehicle. If you want to keep a classic car in its perfect running condition, the oil should be replaced regularly. Change your car’s oil every 2 thousand miles is good for your car. Just make sure you run your car a couple miles before draining it to wash away anything that could lead to future problems. Drive your classic car One thing about classic car owners is that they collect these types of vehicles and just store it in their garage and using their standard cars for everyday use. Like all of the things in the world, cars, may it be classic or not, needs to be used regularly to keep it in its finest form. It needs to get out and breathe fresh air so as not to let its parts rot inside your garage. Proper storage is necessary to protect it from harsh elements, but just keeping it inside your garage forever isn’t doing it any good also.

Nissan Leaf to Feature e-Pedal

N

issan announced that the widely anticipated new Nissan LEAF will come with e-Pedal, a revolutionary technology that transforms the way we drive.

With the flip of a switch, the technology turns your accelerator into an e-Pedal, allowing drivers to accelerate, decelerate and stop

24

using just the e-Pedal*. e-Pedal technology is the world’s first onepedal operation that allows drivers to bring the car to a complete stop even on hills, stay in position, and resume driving instantly. Drivers can cover 90% of their driving needs with the e-Pedal, making the process of driving more exciting. In heavy traffic and during city commutes, drivers will greatly reduce the need to shift from one pedal to the other, making your drive simpler and more engaging. The e-Pedal technology represents another key milestone in Nissan’s ongoing commitment to bring accessible, advanced driver assistance technologies to the mainstream. Set to make driving safer and more enjoyable, the development of these technologies is part of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s blueprint for transforming how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society. By launching the Nissan LEAF, the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle, Nissan established itself as pioneer in the EV movement. Today the Nissan LEAF is the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, with more than 277,000 sold worldwide.

Dining with Pashion

Rosa’s Cucina Italiana 2331 Clarke St, Port Moody, BC V3H 1Y9

I

was relaxing ocean side at a bed and breakfast in Port Moody when I was told “tonight you’re eating gnocchi.” It was so unexpected so I got very excited! Since my favorite gnocchi spot (Villa Verdi in Surrey) closed a few years ago I was ready to get a good meal! I rarely go to Port Moody and my friend had googled Italian restaurants and stumbled on Rosa’s. He said there were good reviews. I asked if he made a reservation and he said they didn’t take them. We pulled up and it was very small, but was full. It looked to be about 50 seats or less. We waited a few minutes on the side walk and got seated after about 5 minutes. There were photos all over the walls of celebrities who had dined there. When I saw my favorite hockey player Mark Messier on the wall my eyes just lit up! Then Jim Pattison too! He can afford to hire a plane to go eat at any restaurant in the world, so if he eats here, it MUST be good. Others notables were Mike Reno from Loverboy, Michael Buble, Michael Bolton, and even the infamous Ron Jeremy. The bar is fully licensed and as we got our drinks we were served an entire whole loaf of fresh white bread at our table. The soft drinks were in cans instead of from a tap, which I know people can be particular about. The bread was freshly baked but not served hot. Butter packets were served with it. I looked over the menu as i snacked on bread. I found my gnocchi! It was served with a choice of tomato or cream sauce. I looked at other tables and noticed the large portions. I knew there would be no room for an appetizer or for dessert. I ordered the homemade gnocchi with cream sauce and my friend got the homemade cannelloni. As we waited for our food we read the comments and food reviews from the

celebrity filled walls and soon the food came out piping hot. It was so hot we had to wait a few minutes before attempting to eat it. The portions were huge. There was enough for dinner today and lunch tomorrow. My gnocchi was light and fluffy. In the past, I’ve had gnocchi that would make a good boat anchor, but not at Rosa’s. Rosa’s gnocchi is airy and melts in your mouth. I tasted the cannelloni. The tomato sauce was so fresh and vibrant that the tomato actually bursts in your mouth, which heightened the dining experience. There were tiny pleasant explosions in your mouth. My friend said it was the best cannelloni he’s eaten in his life. We got our leftovers packed, which I saw every other table doing as well. The spaghetti and meatballs looked even bigger than our gnocchi and cannelloni. Rosa’s is open from 4pm – 11pm every day but closed on Monday’s. They do not take reservations and I waited outside for a table. If it’s raining you may need an umbrella. There is some parking available in the front and in the area and it’s free. I will go back if I’m in the Port Moody area again and try that huge spaghetti and meatballs I was eyeing and some carrot cheese cake. Lots of former Vancouver Canucks, BC Lions and local news celebrities enjoy frequenting Rosa’s for an authentic homemade Italian experience. Bring a big appetite and make sure your belt can open one more notch because you will need it! Column by- Pash Brar // Mobile Leasing Rep. at Auto One Leasing LP september / october 2017

2018 Audi A5 Sportback

2018 Toyota Tacoma

W

ith couple like styling and sedan like practicality, the new 2018 Audi A5 Sportback is seen as the Audi A7’s younger sibling. It is another viable option for buyers who are looking for a vehicle with a sleek design as well as ample amount of storage space. The Audi A5 Sportback is based on the Audi A4 for platform but the rear end styling is closer to that of a hatchback. Standard under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 252 HP and 273lb-ft of torque which is linked to a dual clutch 7- speed transmission. This paired with Audi’s iconic Quattro all-wheel drive system propels the car from 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds. For those who would rather have a little more power under their foot, choose the S5 variant that offers a 3.0L turbo-charged 6-cylinder engine that is also in the S4. Additionally, the vehicle can be optioned with Audi’s virtual cockpit, which is a popular option throughout Audi’s vehicle lineup. Combining all these features there is no doubt – the new Audi A5 Sportback will be a head turner.

O

ne of the most growing categories in the automobile industry is the compact pickup section. After being one of the top selling compact pickup trucks in North America, Toyota has made a pinnacle name in the segment. The Toyota Tacoma was fully redesigned in 2016 and in 2017 the brand added the TRD pro trim level. For the 2018 model year, consumers can expect minor changes, as the truck is relatively new. These changes vary from a couple of new color options all the way to added safety features. The interior will be mostly untouched. The 2018 model will integrate Toyota’s Safety Sense-P to improve the truck’s already high safety ratings. This feature adds a range of secure and protective features, such as pre-collision system, lane departure with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and lastly, a front collision mitigating system with pedestrian detection. By adding so many essential features, which used to be only found in the Tacoma’s competitors, Toyota has created an opportunity to leap ahead in a league of their own.

uick attacks the mid-size sedan segment with the Regal and 2017 will be the last year for the current model. For 2017, buyers get three new paint colors options. The media interface now features Apple CarPlay and Android compatibility. The car comes in a spectrum of trim levels and customers have two engine options to choose from – the base naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine or at higher trims, a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that creates 259 HP and 295lb-ft of torque. Both engines are linked to a six- speed automatic transmission. Standard, the car comes with front wheel drive but can be optioned with all-wheel drive. The brand’s IntelliLink Infotainment System is controlled through an 8-inch touchscreen, which is very user friendly. This screen is included all trim levels of the car. Inside the cabin, there is an ample amount of room space and the cabin is very quiet. Safety features such as rear-view camera are standard but additional safety packages can be added at buyers’ will. The fashionable Buick Regal has sharp styling inside and out, which is a bargain when compared to its European rivals.

ith the first-generation BMW 4 series being launched in 2014, it has now come time for the mid-life facelift for this model. The new BMW 440i has the same 3.0-liter single turbocharged inline six that produces 320HP and 330lb-ft of torque. From the facelift, you can see new styling changes made to improve the aerodynamics and look of the vehicle. At the exterior, the new LED headlights and front and back bumpers are easily noticeable. When overlooking the adjustments made to improve the driving feel, the list of updates is large. Some of the most key changes include a new revised suspension with more stiff dampers and new power steering. The 440i can be optioned out with an 8-speed automatic transmission but for those who like to have a more engaging feel will be happy to know the car comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. Plus, the car is available in rear wheel drive or BMW’s xDrive system. With so many variations to configure your car, you can rest assured that the BMW 440i will deliver the brand’s ultimate driving experience.

Volvo V90 Inscription

Volvo V90 Inscription The Non-SUV Family Luxury Vehicle

I

f the V90 Inscription could speak, what you would hear from its beautifully sculpted Bowers and Wilkins speaker grill is “I’m Dead Sexy.” But, rather than sounding like Fat Bastard from Austin Powers, it would sound more like the guy from the IKEA commercials. The V90 is a gorgeously contoured piece of sheet metal. It has a sweeping roof line and aggressive, yet, sporty front grill flanked by Volvo’s LED powered Thor’s Hammer headlights (by the way they double as the turn signals). This design shift is the welcomed result of Volvo’s Parent Company Geely. Since its infusion of considerable backing combined with a handsoff approach, the Scandinavian car manufacturer 28

september / october 2017

has been able to do what it does best, produce vehicles that march to a different drum, purpose built; but now, also design icons or better yet, mavericks. The Data and Drive: The V90 is the next Volvo in a string to be built on the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. For Canada all V90’s will be powered by a 2.0L supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pushes out 316 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm, 295 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2,200 rpm. The result is a surprisingly nimble vehicle, despite being a full size estate car. What you will also discover is an almost full lack of turbo lag. The unique Volvo engine design

Sandeep Gill Trial Lawyer Keystone Law Group

Volvo V90 Inscription starts the vehicle moving using the supercharger and then shuts it down as rpm’s build and the more efficient turbocharger can kick in. This allows for a surprisingly quick claimed 0-60 km sprint of 5.6 seconds. Having logged some time behind the wheel these numbers should be relatively accurate. Now for the sound, when you think of a premium European luxury car, the soft rumble of V8 comes to mind or the perfectly tuned growl of a V6. However, Volvo’s have always taken the path less traveled. Utilizing turbo chargers and small displacement four cylinder engines has always been a mainstay. My own Volvo 740 and 850 Turbo’s instantly jump to mind. These were fun cars to drive, never begging for power or speed. However, this engine sounds too subdued and sometimes

course, although in sport mode the faint hint of exhaust overrun can be heard from the tailpipe under hard acceleration. That stated, the traditional vibration of four cylinder is imperceptible allowing for a quiet cabin void of noise, except that of the Bowers and Wilkins sound system. Sound deadening is exceptional, eliminating almost all outside sounds even at highway speeds. The Goodies: The interior of the Volvo V90 Inscription is an exercise of minimalism. The driver’s side of the dashboard uses a large full colour LCD display. It can be set to provide speed and rpm details along with navigation, and other technical data for the car along with audio settings. The details and materials are exquisite from

the soft tough aluminum accents used in the HVAC Vent stacks to the textured walnut surrounding the vehicle. Looking upwards gives you a glimpse of the full panoramic glass roof integrated with the front moon roof. The center dash area houses Volvo’s Sensus Infotainment System, comprised of a single 9” LCD touch screen. It is beautifully integrated, although, unconventional for a safety orientated company. The system allows and requires full control of almost all vehicle settings through the touch screen. The system is relatively intuitive to learn, but, require your eyes to be removed from the road in order to access features. In an era touting the dangers of distracted driving, this seems unusual, especially from a company so founded on safety. Please note that the Volvo V90 has a very sophisticated voice recognition/operated system. However, for day to day use voice activation is not the most efficient means of control, at least not yet. My test vehicle came equipped with a heads up display, in my opinion a must have feature that allows for a very focused driving experience. The V90 provides for a very controlled driving manner, although, for a luxury vehicle the ride can be on the slightly harsh side and a bit too tightly sprung, feeling more like a grand tourer than land yacht; although, this allows for flat composed cornering it tends to unsettle the car on less the level roadways. The vehicle dynamics are customizable between ECO, Normal and Sport modes. The latter sharpens dampening and throttle response to a noticeable degree. It also incorporates a more aggressive shift pattern and quicker steering ratio. The V90 also utilizes an all-Electric steering system, becoming a staple for most car manufacturers, as safety becomes paramount. The system is programmable, to increase steering feel and weight. All in all the system allows for decent road feel and feedback. To soak up some of the ride harshness the V90 has some of the most comfortable and highly adjustable seats in the industry. They are well bolstered through the thighs, laterally and they provide exceptional lumbar support. The seats on my test bed came fully adjustable, heated and cooled, and during this heat wave, a much loved feature. The V90 provides copious amounts of leg room both front and back. Vehicle entry and exit is easy both aft and front. The keyless entry systems allows for theatre style lighting as you approach the vehicle, illuminating the doors. The general public that finds estate cars or wagons appealing, are looking for the ride, comfort and driving style afforded by a car, but, also want the utility of a SUV or CUV. The V90 does not disappoint. In T6 AWD trim, the V90 offers the sure footedness needed during inclement weather conditions. But, also provides a cavernous amount of rear space, 723 L to be exact. I can attest that the vehicle was easily able to accommodate a fun filled day of stuff for a trip to the beach and would make mincemeat of the monthly jaunt to Costco to stock up on that most important 4 liter bottle of mayonnaise. The most interesting part of the V90 Inscription and likely more so for the V90 R-Design, is what I stated at the outset, this car is gorgeous. I had a lot of on lookers that gave the car a second look and some even stopped to admire the Twilight Bronze Metallic V90 while it was parked. Volvo fans will love the look of this car and those previously not fans, will be left awestruck as to what this car is and why did they not pay attention before. With an as tested price of nearly $82,000.00, your V90 Inscription will remain a rare jewel for others to admire.

What Happens When You Mix Energy Drinks with Alcohol

T

ranslucent and neon coloured energy drinks are marketed towards young and middle aged people promising them a rush of energy and a taste for adventure sports. Even though their popularity has soared ten-fold in the last few years, they remain largely misunderstood. Doctors and researchers have warned people of the dangers of drinking caffeinated energy drinks over and over again. Research shows that they can change the way the heart beats which means rapid heart rates, palpitations, rise in blood pressure and in some severe cases, seizures or even death. They can also cause the body to lose all its water, dehydrating you in the process. Another 2014 study said that a certain energy drink has as many as 13 teaspoons of sugar and the equivalent caffeine of two cups of coffee! A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition

A new study published in the journal Advances in Nutrition says that the alcohol and energy drink combination isn’t just a personal risk, but a public hazard. Cecile Marczinski, professor of psychology at Northern Kentucky University was quoted saying, “When people mix energy drinks with alcohol, people drink more than they would if they had just consumed alcohol, which is associated with a cascade of problems.” There is an increased risk of engaging in risky behaviour like drunk driving. The high amount of caffeine makes a person behave more coordinated which makes them believe they’re not actually drunk. Marczinski also cited a study which said that those who mixed alcohol with energy drinks were four times more likely to believe they can drive home when compared to their counterparts who drank alcohol alone. This paves way to road accidents and endless mishaps.

claimed that energy drinks also cause insomnia and nervousness. As the exhaustive list of the health hazards of energy drinks goes on, we have a new problem - What happens when you mix energy drinks with alcohol? In 2014, an Australian study that was published in ‘Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research’ found that mixing vodka with energy drinks makes you want to drink more. Another weird fact the study revealed was that people who consumed energy drinks had lower breath alcohol concentration - so in a way, energy drinks mask the smell of alcohol. Researchers believe that this could have had something to do with the high sugar content and carbs that the drink has.

Alcohol with energy drinks is a disaster waiting to happen. Energy drinks don’t come with a health warning but experts believe they should. In fact, in May last year, the American Medical Association called for a ban on the marketing of energy drinks to children and teenagers. Energy drink makers were quick to defend themselves and one of the brands said that they’ve always committed to ensuring that all of the ingredients in its energy drinks, including caffeine, are safe and in regulatory compliance for their intended use. The debate about whether energy drinks and alcohol make a good combination or not remains inconclusive but what we can all do is to be more mindful of what we give our body. By: Kriti Malik

British Columbia Rest Areas to Offer Free, Public Wi-Fi

U

nless they have an unlimited data plan, motorists can quickly drain their cellphone’s data while on the road. Drivers in British Columbia will get some relief. The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation has recently announced plans to offer free Wi-Fi at rest areas. Currently, the rest area at Britton Creek off of the Coquihalla Highway offers the free Wi-Fi service. The Glacier View rest area on Highway 16 north of Smithers also has recently launched free Wi-Fi. Through the partnership of Canadian telecommunications company Telus and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, the following locations will feature free Wi-Fi by the end of the year:

years. Motorists can identify which rest areas offer the service with a Wi-Fi graphic on rest area signs. A Ministry of Transportation news release that free Wi-Fi “benefits the commercial trucking sector, allowing commercial operators to rest, access washroom facilities and stay connected.” Commercial vehicle inspection stations throughout the province also offer free Wi-Fi.

• Britton Creek, Highway 5 – 42 miles south of Merritt • Glacier View, Highway 16 – 4 miles north of Smithers • Taylor River, Highway 4 – 23 miles west of Port Alberni • Galena Bay, Highway 23 – 30 miles north of Nakusp • Mount Terry Fox, Highway 16 – 4 miles east of Tete Jaune • Loon Lake, Highway 97C – 25 miles east of Merritt More locations will add free, public Wi-Fi service in the coming

Laser Jammers and Radar Detectors If you’re like me, you’ve probably had the urge to press down on the accelerator and feel the surge of energy when going faster. Even though I don’t speed very often, I do on occasion “speed” when there is light traffic on the freeway. Most law enforcement officers understand that the general flow of traffic is usually going slightly faster than the posted limit. What they are looking for is the aggressive driver who is going much faster, and putting others at risk. However, some people think that being ticketed for going about 10 km/h over the speed limit is unfair, especially when there is a limited amount of cars on the road and traffic is flowing steadily. Just like law enforcement has state-of-the-art technology to catch speeders, there is equivalent technology that tries to warn a driver of a potential speed trap. This article is not written to encourage speeding; rather, it is designed to give the reader information about radar detectors and laser jammers.

Laser Jammer When you see a law enforcement officer standing off to the side of the road trying to measure your speed, he is most likely using a LIDAR (‘laser’ gun) to get an accurate reading. These devices are very accurate and can pick out an individual vehicle within a stream of traffic. The gun works by illuminating the target with a laser and analyzing the reflecting light. Without going into the specifics, after some calculations this will yield the speed of the object. A Laser Jammer’s purpose is to prevent the LIDAR gun from getting an accurate reading. When the Laser Jammer has detected that a LIDAR gun is pointed at it, the jammer will send out light that is on the same wavelength as the LIDAR gun, but at a higher intensity. This will confuse the gun, causing it to get wrong readings. However, this

makes laser jammers easier to find as most modern LIDAR guns will inform the operator that they are actively being jammed. Since the LIDAR can easily target a single car in traffic, it’s easy enough to figure out where the jamming is coming from. Radar Detectors A radar detector is used to warn the driver if they are being monitored with a radar gun. A radar gun (or speed gun) is used to measure the speed of a moving object; much like the LIDAR gun. It is used commonly by law enforcement for speed checking, and professional sports such as baseball and tennis to measure the speed of the balls and other statistics. The radar gun utilizes the Doppler Effect where the frequency of the return signal changes in proportion to the objects speed. The faster the object, the higher the frequency of the return speed. A radar detector has a special receiver to detect the waves from the radar gun and alerts the user when detected. Using a GPS enabled detector, operators are able to catalogue locations where radar was detected. Because the receiver of a radar detector has an oscillator that radiates a little, it is possible to build a radardetector-detector which is able to detect the oscillator. In BC it is legal to use a Radar Detector, as well as in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However, in the rest of Canada, radar detectors are illegal, and law enforcement may confiscate equipment regardless if it is currently being used or not.

Always remember that there is a clear difference between those who speed slightly and those who speed aggressively, and law enforcement officers are targeting the latter group.

Disclaimer: It is illegal to use a laser jammer to defeat law enforcement speed measurements of your vehicle.

Michelin’s New Vision Concept Tire Time to be Movin’ON The Vision tire is amazing to say the least. According to Michelin staff, one of the most unique aspects of Vision is that it’s rechargeable, meaning that it has the ability to change tread patterns to adapt to various road conditions, climates, and driving styles. This could be done via 3D printers, even along the route to your destination. Visit this link to view pictures and a remarkable video that showcases how Vision can easily adapt to various road and climate conditions: http://michelinmedia.com/pages/ galleries/detail/9/118/

eing in Montreal in June 2017 was quite the experience, especially if one was attending Michelin’s Movin’On Conference, which focused on sustainability and mobility. This global conference gave attendees the chance to not only partake in a number of panels, discussions, and hands-on workshops, but introduced some amazing new technologies and visions. One which created quite the buzz was the Vision Concept tire, which was presented by Michelin’s executive vice-president of R&D, Terry Gettys. Vision is a concentration and collaboration of many technologies, resulting in a tire that is airless, connected, rechargeable, customizable and organic. What’s more is that Vision is both a wheel and tire. “The tire is inspired by nature with a very light, efficient structure,” said Gettys. “It’s not in production. It is a long-term concept which brings together our vision of all the elements of sustainable mobility,” continued Gettys.

A major, and dangerous, problem for professional drivers, especially onhighway truck drivers, is blowouts. Since Vision is an airless tire, there is no chance of this happening, thanks to an innovative interior architecture that supports the vehicle while providing safety and comfort. Since one of the focus points of Movin’On is sustainability, Vision is made of both bio-sourced and biodegradable materials – organic, including natural rubber, paper, bamboo, tin, wood, waste, tire chips, cloth, cardboard, and even molasses! That’s quite the list. Finally, in order to make sure Vision is optimal at all times, it’s equipped with sensors that provide real time information about its condition. And thanks to a new mobile application, drivers can even make an appointment to change the tire’s destination, depending on user needs. One of Michelin North America’s aims is to the improvement of sustainability and the new Vision concept tire is thus, headed in the right direction. Don’t start getting rid of your tires already because according to Gettys, Vision is still about 10 years away, which in reality, isn’t too far away.

Mortgage Insurance:

Are You Really Protected?

T

here’s nothing more exciting than signing the dotted line on your first mortgage. You’re a proud home owner now, with your ownership deed and a lighter wallet as proof. And if you’re like most Canadians, your home will be at the centre of your family and social life. So now that you’ve settled all the related fees, expenses, legalities and the like, have you given any thought about how your family would manage the mortgage payments if something happened to you? In that type of unexpected situation, mortgage insurance is the best solution. Given that your home is your most important investment, it makes sense to keep it secure for your family. The challenge is that many Canadians aren’t familiar with how mortgage insurance works or the full extent of its coverage. And this often leaves many vulnerable. Home-buyers first hear about mortgage insurance from their lender during the mortgage application process. It’s often presented as an easy-to-approve and affordable solution designed to pay off the debt in case of death, allowing your family to remain in your home.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. The problem is that lender employees are not employed as life insurance agents and may not be trained to determine if you are actually qualified for mortgage insurance at the time of your application. They tend to decide this after a claim has been made through a process called post-claim underwriting. If the lender finds any discrepancies on your initial application, which may happen because their employees are not professional life insurance agents fully trained and experienced in all the medical and lifestyle questions, your claim could be denied. Your beneficiaries would then only receive a refund of your premiums, which is little comfort for a family who thought the mortgage would be paid off. The best way to avoid this type of disappointment is to purchase mortgage insurance from a licensed life insurance representative. All is not lost however if you purchased your policy from your lender. A short meeting with an insurance expert can ensure that you obtain the right coverage.

But it’s clear VW’s designers were not messing around when they drew up this new model, to SUVs and crossovers in a bid whose size and interior space to sustain its success in North position it at the high end of America, and the first of those is a seven-seat model called the Atlas. the mid-size SUV class. actually spacious enough for adults. Another plus is that the secondrow captain’s chairs in my tester (an option that replaces a standard three-place bench seat) slide way forward to allow easy access to the third row. Surprisingly, the Atlas is lighter than the smaller Touareg, so that the 3.6L V6 engine carried over from that outgoing model provides similarly impressive performance in this larger, more practical vehicle. That weight reduction shines through in a comfortable ride marred only by a surprising amount of suspension noise over rough pavement. It also allowed VW to offer a less-powerful 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder as the Atlas’s base engine. In my tester, all the V6 lacked was low-end torque, instead bringing its best performance at engine speeds close to 3,000 rpm and above, which isn’t so bad considering the refined noises this motor makes when it’s working hard. All Atlas models comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission that is reluctant to downshift for acceleration in highway driving, a nod to keeping fuel consumption as low as possible. My test vehicle averaged 13.0 L/100 km in city driving, a little better than VW’s estimate of 13.7 L/100 km. If you want sharper throttle response, the sport driving mode provides it. Build quality is generally good, but some of the interior

materials that might be suitable to the Atlas’s $35,000-and-change starting price felt out of place at my Execline tester’s price of more than $53,000, as did poorly-fitted exterior trim pieces around the rear fenders. Tech quirks included a lane keeping assist system that was inconsistent in its reactions to the car drifting too close to lane markings, and a hands-free power tailgate designed to respond to a kick under the rear bumper that worked just once in my time with the car. But other items, like a customizable digital gauge cluster, 12-speaker stereo, a good-looking and responsive infotainment touchscreen, radar cruise control, three-zone climate control and heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats were all welcome inclusions at my tester’s price. Those inconsistencies speak to the kind of early production bugs that affect many all-new vehicle designs and that I hope Volkswagen can iron out. Design and performance-wise, the Atlas is more than good enough to compete for buyers against more established SUV nameplates. All that remains to be seen is whether those buyers are willing to forgive this company its past indiscretions.
