When I was a young school-going kid, I used to see the above slogan written on the back of almost every vehicle in Punjab, India. At that time, I could not understand the slogan’s full meaning; but now I have a better understanding of it and I encourage others to follow the message of this slogan. Many people have chosen to become a professional driver as their career; however, most adults must also drive because of work. In today’s high paced world, we are constantly rushing on the road, and as a result, we break speed limits and other driving laws. All we are doing is putting our own lives, and those of others, in danger. While we all have to reach our destinations on time, always keep this slogan, ‘Life is precious than time,’ in mind. Leave extra time for your drive and you’ll notice that you are even more relaxed while driving. In the trucking industry, so many precious lives have been lost due to bad driving habits, with speeding and carelessness being only two of them. Recently, two young truck drivers, were killed in an accident and this needless loss of life was unnecessary. While helping a fellow driver stuck on the road, these two truckers were struck and killed by a passing vehicle. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims. Helping others is always good, but please ensure your own safety first. Let’s make some resolutions that focus on safety and make our roads safer. Enjoy driving and God bless you always.

through Dec. 16, 2019. The rule notes that any carrier installing an AOBRD prior to 2017 ELD enforcement date can use that device until the 2019 date. Essentially, this means FMCSA is enforcing the requirement to use a registry-listed device is unlikely before that time, particularly for carriers who comply with the ELD rule and install an engine-connected e-log prior to Dec. 18, 2017 minimizing the importance for carriers to choose a registry-listed device. It is suggested upon consideration of any product not listed on the registry demand of the vendor disclosure of its plans for registered its device and whether or not it has plans for support and success of its product beyond 2019. For owner-operators, perhaps the biggest exemption to FMCSA’s ELD requirement is the exclusion of 1999 and older model year trucks from complying. Other exemptions exist for the following: Drivers in drive-away/tow-away operations, where the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered. Drivers operating under the timecard exception to the hours recording rules – the 100- and 150-air-mile radius short-haul exceptions – exclusively. Drivers who occasionally keep a log book but do not do so for more than eight days in any 30-day period.

T
he Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is taking its opposition to the electronic logging device mandate to the highest court in the land. The small business trucking group this week filed a petition with the Supreme Court of the United States, arguing that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit was wrong when it ruled that the e-log requirement does not violate Fourth Amendment protections against illegal search and seizure. The deadline for compliance with the ELD rule is Dec. 18, 2017 “We believe that the Seventh Circuit erred in allowing warrantless searches of 3.5 million drivers, designed specifically to uncover evidence of criminal activity,” said Jim Johnston, president and CEO of OOIDA. “In doing so, the Seventh Circuit decision splits directly with rulings by both the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts. This is also the first time that the pervasively regulated industry exception has been applied directly to the search of an individual to serve the ordinary needs of criminal law enforcement.” OOIDA contends that the “pervasively regulated industry exception” to the warrant requirement, the basis of the Seventh Circuit’s denial, does not extend beyond the search of “business premises.” Additionally, for such an exception and warrantless search, the Supreme Court imposed strict guidelines—guidelines which the ELD rule does not specifically address. An ELD requirement is the equivalent of warrantless surveillance of truckers, according to OOIDA. “The ELD Rule does far more than authorize administrative inspections of business premises. HOS regulations are directed toward the personal conduct of drivers,” the petition states. “ELDs monitor and record driver conduct, including driver activity and location, twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, more expansively and invasively than paper logbooks currently do.” The association will also continue to pursue the issue on the congressional side as part of its “Knock Out Bad Regs” campaign and will continue to communicate with the Trump administration about this and other regulations, Johnson said. “We were very disappointed and surprised by the ruling against us by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals,” Johnston said. “That same court had ruled in our favour on a previous lawsuit of ours on this same issue.” said Johnston. 12

Electronic Logging Devices and Hours of Service Supporting Documents Frequently Asked Questions 1. What are the key requirements of the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rule? The ELD rule: • Requires ELD use by commercial drivers who are required to prepare hours-of-service (HOS) records of duty status (RODS). • Sets ELD performance and design standards, and requires ELDs to be certified and registered with FMCSA. • Establishes what supporting documents drivers and carriers are required to keep. • Prohibits harassment of drivers based on ELD data or connected technology (such as fleet management system). The rule also provides recourse for drivers who believe they have been harassed. 2. What is the mandate in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) for the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rule? Section 32301(b) of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Enhancement Act, enacted as part of MAP-21, (Pub. L. 112-141, 126 Stat. 405, 786-788, July 6, 2012), mandates the ELD rule. It calls for the Secretary of Transportation to adopt regulations requiring ELD use in commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) involved in interstate commerce, when operated by drivers who are required to keep records of duty status (RODS). 3. Who must comply with the electronic logging device (ELD) rule? The ELD applies to most motor carriers and drivers who are currently required to maintain records of duty status (RODS) per Part 395, 49 CFR 395.8(a). The rule applies to commercial buses as well as trucks, and to Canada- and Mexico-domiciled drivers. The ELD rule allows limited exceptions to the ELD mandate, including: • Drivers who operate under the short-haul exceptions may continue using timecards; they are not required to keep RODS and will not be required to use ELDs. • Drivers who use paper RODS for not more than 8 days out of every 30-day period. • Drivers who conduct drive-away-tow-away operations, in which the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered. • Drivers of vehicles manufactured before 2000. 4. What electronic logging device (ELD) user documentation must be onboard a driver’s commercial motor vehicle? Beginning on December 18, 2017, a driver using an ELD must have an ELD information packet onboard the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) containing the following items: 1. A user’s manual for the driver describing how to operate the ELD; 2. An instruction sheet describing the data transfer mechanisms supported by the ELD and step-by-step instructions to produce and 14

transfer the driver’s hours-of-service records to an authorized safety official; 3. An instruction sheet for the driver describing ELD malfunction reporting requirements and recordkeeping procedures during ELD malfunctions; and 4. A supply of blank driver’s records of duty status (RODS) graphgrids sufficient to record the driver’s duty status and other related information for a minimum of 8 days. Prior to December 18, 2017, FMCSA recommends that drivers have the user’s manual, malfunction instruction sheet, and graphgrids. 5. Can an electronic logging device (ELD) be on a smartphone or other wireless device? Yes. An ELD can be on a smartphone or other wireless device if the device meets the ELD rule’s technical specifications. 6. Can a driver use a portable electronic logging device (ELD)? Yes. A driver may use a portable ELD. A portable ELD must be mounted in a fixed position during commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation (CMV) and visible to the driver from a normal seated driving position. This information can be found in the ELD Rule section 395.22(g). 7. How long must a motor carrier retain electronic logging device (ELD) record of duty status (RODS) data? A motor carrier must retain ELD record of duty status (RODS) data and back-up data for six months. The back-up copy of ELD records must be maintained on a device separate from that where original data are stored. Additionally, a motor carrier must retain a driver’s ELD records in a manner that protects driver privacy. 8. What electronically transferred data from electronic logging devices (ELDs) will be retained by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and other authorized safety officials? FMCSA will not retain any ELD data unless there is a violation. 9. How are motor carriers required to present records of duty status (RODS) from December 11-17, 2017? Will drivers be required to present their records of duty status on electronic logging devices (ELDs)? No, drivers will not be required to present RODS on ELDs from December 11, 2017 to December 17, 2017. Drivers can present their previous 7 days of RODS through any of the following: • Paper records, • A printout from an electronic logging device, • A display from a device installed with logging software and electronic signature capabilities, • Having the records available by entering them into an ELD, or • Continued use of a grandfathered automatic on-board recording device.

That alone can be $450 a month! You say you can’t save? YES you CAN !. I recently saw an application for a girl in her early 20’s who wanted to buy a brand new Mazerati. The car was over $130,000 and her income was less than $20,000. After I stopped laughing at the application, it was approved with a co-signer and a huge down payment. We were the only place to even approve the
deal after multiple declines. We know there is NO WAY she can afford the down payment, the monthly payments, the insurance and maintenance on that car. Yet the girl thinks she’s entitled to have this car. What makes people think they are entitled and can afford things they clearly cannot?? I was dealing with a client who turns 50 years old this year. His truck was being paid off after 4 years. He used to own a home and now lives on rent and his wife does not work. They have no children. You would think he has a large bank balance, but think again. He has zero money. We issued him a refund cheque for a security deposit that was only $1,000 and mailed it to him along with the paperwork to transfer the truck to his name. He was given the option to pick up the cheque but he claimed he was too busy and requested it be mailed. Every day he calls asking about his money. He is so desperate for $1,000 that it has gotten to the point of harassment. He is calling several times a day. I asked him where his other money is. I asked where the money from the home he sold is. I asked why he doesn’t have life insurance and who he expects to take care of his wife since he doesn’t plan to and how will he retire with no money? He got angry and said I was rude. I countered and said it was rude to call every single day, several times a day for such a small cheque which has been mailed because he was too busy to pick it up. He said he quit his job and was no longer working. I said normal people first find a new job and THEN quit the old job. I said he is not responsible and had poor money management skills. I said this is a FACT and call it rude, but it is a FACT. No one who is almost 50 years old should be so desperate for such a small amount of money and have an empty bank account and have no job BY CHOICE. And 18

what was he doing that he was too busy to pick up his cheque in the first place since he had no job? I cannot help everybody, but I hope people can learn from these real life examples. You need to save money and cut spending. Do you plan to leave your debt to your family and loved one’s? Do you plan to have them also pay for your funeral with no money and beg other relatives if they can live with them because they were not taken care of and have an empty bank account? Will these people go on government assistance? Who will look after them? Ask yourself, what if I’m not around tomorrow, what will happen to my family? There are people who are irresponsible, and I don’t think anything you say or do can teach them to become responsible. Advisors are taught to dispose quickly of the irresponsible as time wasters who will never learn. I just feel bad for the people these time wasters affect. If you feel you are in this situation and are worried about being left alone with other people’s debt and burden, I encourage you to seek a financial advisor’s help and make sure you are taken care of. Become selfish. If your loved one is selfish and doesn’t care about you, you can also be selfish and look out for yourself.

Navistar introduces new regional haul Class 8

avistar introduced a new regional haul Class 8 tractor this week: the International RH Series, which will be spec’d with the OEM’s new 12.4-litre A26 engine as its standard power plant. “The new International RH Series continues our commitment to build trucks that lead the industry in uptime,” said Bill Kozek, president of truck and parts for Navistar, in a statement. “We are confident this truck will continue to build on our momentum and be successful in the regional haul market.” He added that Navistar is now taking orders for this new truck, with plans to begin production in early June. New features on the RH Series include: • Multiple cab configurations, including day cab, 56-in. low roof sleeper, 56-in. hi-rise sleeper, day cab with roof fairing, and 56-in. hi-rise sleeper with roof fairing. • The Bendix Wingman Advanced Collision Mitigation system as standard equipment. • An inside wheel cut of up to 50 degrees delivering a curb-tocurb turning radius of just 27-ft. 10-in. for better maneuverability in tight city streets or cramped loading docks. • Aerodynamic improvements, reduced weight, and driveline enhancements make the RH Series up to 6% more fuel-efficient versus previous regional haul models. • Those aerodynamic improvements also yielded a four-Sone decrease in wind noise for improved driver comfort. • Ergonomically designed service points under the hood and around the chassis for easier and safer access, with many components engineered with longer intervals between required maintenance. • Cab wiring with all-new harnesses connected to an in-cab

power distribution module that is located inside the truck for more protection from the elements. • A new dashboard display that offers up to 15 customizable digital gauges, with the air horn relocated back to its traditional “intuitive” position over the driver door. • A new single-canister after-treatment system that is 60% smaller, 40% lighter, and simplified for quicker servicing. Navistar added that drivers will benefit from the redesigned side windows and mirrors on the RH Series, which provide enhanced side visibility. The OEM also noted that it developed the interior of the RH Series based a study of interaction points between the driver and truck – everything from what a driver sees to how he moves and reacts in virtually any situation. That resulted in design features such as a large swept-back windshield, more optimized mirror placement, plus an aerodynamic sloped hood for a clearer view. “We drew upon the expertise of drivers to ensure that the RH Series is the most driver-centric Class 8 regional haul vehicle we’ve ever built,” explained Denny Mooney, senior vice president for global product development at Navistar, in a statement. “Many of our customers tell us that their number-one challenge is attracting and retaining drivers, which is why we put so much effort into understanding and responding to drivers’ needs,” he pointed out. “These improvements also contribute to increased driver ease of use that will boost the vehicle’s productivity.”

For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index Slips
merican Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index slipped 1% in March, following a 0.1% decline during February. In March, the index equaled 137.5, down from 138.8 in February. The alltime high was 142.7 in February 2016. Compared with March 2016, the SA index rose 0.7%. In February, the index contracted 2.7% on a year-over-year basis. Year-to-date, compared with the same three months in 2016, the index is up 0.2%. For all of 2016, tonnage was up 2.5%. Trucks hauled nearly 10.5 billion tons of freight in 2015. Motor carriers collected $726.4 billion, or 81.2% of total revenue earned by all transport modes. ATA calculates the tonnage index based on surveys from its membership and has been doing so since the 1970s. This is a preliminary figure and subject to change in the final report issued around the 10th day of the month. The report includes month-tomonth and year-over-year results, relevant economic comparisons and key financial indicators.

Peterbilt Adds Collision Mitigation Standard
P
eterbilt Motor Co. plans to make the Bendix Wingman Advanced collision mitigation safety system a standard feature on its Model 579 highway tractor starting July 1. A radar-based collision mitigation system aimed specifically at reducing rear-end collisions, Wingman Advanced also offers adaptive cruise control with braking as well as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), Bendix noted. The Wingman system us based on the Bendix Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Peterbilt has offered as a standard feature on most of its Class 8 tractors – including the Model 579 – since 2012. Wingman Advanced has been an option on its entire range of on-highway truck models for the same period, Bendix noted.

his month, the California Labor Commissioner issued Orders, Decisions, and Awards in the amount of $855,285.62 to four port and rail drivers working for XPO Logistics’ subsidiary XPO Cartage. These drivers – like hundreds of others at XPO and other harbour trucking companies – filed Wage & Hour claims with the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement alleging misclassification as independent contractors. They join more than 300 port drivers for whom the Labor Commissioner’s office has issued determinations of misclassification. These four XPO drivers remain classified as independent contractors by their employer and are continuing their fight for classification as employees The ODAs included, for the first time, awards for “nonproductive time,” such as time spent inspecting the truck, waiting for dispatch, or scanning in paperwork at the end of the day. Each of the four XPO drivers were awarded an average of $38,000 in wages for unpaid hours, plus liquidated damages for 28

The awards for “nonproductive time” were pursuant to California Assembly Bill 1513 passed in 2016, which requires employers to pay employees paid piece rate for nonproductive time. Since 2011, port truck drivers serving America’s largest port complex have filed more than 800 claims with the California DLSE, which adjudicates wage claims and is an enforcement branch under the California Labor Commissioner’s Office. The DLSE has issued determinations in about 300 cases, finding that drivers were, in fact, employees. There have been countless claims in many other jurisdictions in North America without the results now being experienced in California. Now there is a precedent in California quite likely legislators and the judiciary will be much more willing to allow similar consideration for the hundreds of thousands of small business owner operator truckers that find themselves tied to a carrier -- at arms length.

The Future of Truck Shows
T
ruck Shows have been around since the mechanization of the transportation industry. Before the mechanization when transportation was basically animal powered to deliver goods beyond railheads, the present day truck shows were called Rodeos. To some degree, the rodeo theme is still a part of truck shows today where drivers compete demonstrating skills sets, where those serving the industry could demonstrate and sell their wares. The Truck Show has evolved in two directions, beyond the rodeo concept although all the shows today try to have some element of skill display, where skills development went from horsemanship to being able to demonstrate a whole host of skills no one in the public could imagine being able to accomplish. First there is the show and shine type of truck show where those people who take a great deal of pride in their ride, polish, clean and make sparkle their working truck or even better, they restore mechanical pieces of history and display those older ways things were done. The other direction, it’s a place where people providing goods and services may display their wares, in a glitz and glamour setting, to their customers in an atmosphere where virtually all the competitive products are available in one location to see, kick the tires, compare, listen to the pitches, and meet old and new friends where stories are swapped, lies told, and adult beverages consumed, maybe even some “Buffalo
wings” eaten. Thank the good Lord, Buffalos don’t fly. In North America there are literally thousands of truck shows of one description or another. The big shows like Mid America Truck Show in Louisville is usually the first of the truck show season and is questionably the biggest, most important. The sheer size of MATS is beyond comprehension if you’ve never attended and attendance is usually well into six digits with the comma in the middle. Dallas has another fairly comparable show later in the season; Las Vegas counts right up there as big and now Atlanta is going to host a truck show purportedly to be a big contender. In Canada, Toronto has a truck show every second year; while Montreal has a truck show on opposite years to Toronto. These truck shows are big but are a minuscule representation of shows like Louisville. Moncton hosts a truck show that’s up and coming
on the east coast and Abbotsford host a very successful truck show on the west coast, both annual events. Then the smaller shows, the more dog and pony, show and shine shows happen throughout the year across the continent. These shows again vary from just gatherings for like minded people to get together and talk about our industry, show their rides and have a fun weekend. Some of these shows have sponsorship from local dealers of manufacturers rather than the manufacturer themselves. Some of the shows are themed events, like “Trucking for a Cure” in which funds are raised for specific causes, in this particular case, the fight against breast cancer. Trucking Shows, like everything else, follow and ebb and flow. They thrive for a time, then complacency sets in and the wain phase kicks in until the bean counter says “either do something to improve the situation, or 34

shut it down”. Apparently, with the Fergus Truck Show, the bean counter didn’t complain quickly enough because the Fergus Truck Show, a show that was on the calendar of 50,000 people for almost thirty years folded its tent this year and will be no longer. There also used to be a good little truck show in a little town called Stirling, Ontario. The Stirling show was the brainchild of a Service Group as a fund raiser, but the Stirling show became a victim of it’s own success. Being run 100% by volunteers, the show had to close because it outstripped the capabilities of the volunteers. The volunteer run show isn’t always a poor business model but it certainly does have its limitations. If you take for example the “Trucking for a Cure” model, Joanne MacKenzie has been organizing it since is was “Convoy for a Cure” for the better part of ten years or more. Jo-Jo (as she’s called) drives for Highland, and Highland has been extremely supportive of Jo-Jo’s efforts over the years, even though she maintains her productivity as a working driver. The time and effort spent over and above her productivity is a huge commitment on her part. Virtually at every truck show event in Ontario, you’ll find Joanne every weekend during the truck show season. Her efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause of the fight against breast cancer. There are many other cause purposed truck events. Truckers are constantly the ones giving to their worthy causes and the causes for which they are giving are always appreciative of the funds so raised. The future of truck shows? If the past is any indicator, and it

is, truck shows will be around for years to come. People in the industry need to have those face to face connections to bring them up to date on an industry that is so influx it’s almost impossible to keep up on a daily basis. Truck shows will evolve, of course, to meet those needs. New products, new concepts, new technology will all drive the need to find a target audience that is most difficult to reach on a one-onone level and truck shows provide that opportunity.
In an industry where an employee can go months and never speak, let alone see his or her immediate supervisor, truck shows are that venue to promote interpersonal relationships with the industry as a whole and maybe that small opportunity to meet the person who signs the paycheque. It is incumbent on the organizers of the truck shows to prove their worth, provide the venue, deliver the target audience and source those who have goods and services that meet the needs of the target audience and provide fair value for the money charged for the space in the venue. Some of the shows go above and beyond their simple mandate while others merely scrape by. Those that are merely scraping by will soon be out of the market place because people notice whether or not they’re being used or sold a bill of goods that doesn’t measure up. The majors, the MATS of the world; the GATS (Great America Truck Show); Truck World/ExpoCam; APNA; and the Atlantic Province Truck Show are doing much more than simply required and are continuing to be successful because they are providing and constantly developing, changing with the new technologies coming on the market. It’s truly a tough row to hoe when a business tries to get several opposing part of the supply chain together to compliment each other, introducing matching employers with employees is another specialized venue for trucking events. This human resources function has been included into the truck show milieux Events that bring people together in ways that are meaningful to all sides of the equation for all purposes is what is going to have the Truck Show a vibrant part of trucking life for all those on the operations side, the supply of goods and services side, the human resources side, the social aspects side, even those where the lines are blurred, then all will be well and continue for decades to come.

TRA Lease and Internet of Things (IOT) firm Telular are partnering up to install the SkyBitz GXT5000 solarpowered fleet management system on over 50,000 of XTRA’s over-the-road dry vans and refrigerated trailers, including approximately 9,000 new trailers purchased this year. XTRA said the GXT5000 series operates on the 3G/4G and LTE cellular networks and is ideal for operations that require near realtime reporting on trailer status, helping improve asset allocation and enhance logistics and security for XTRA’s customers. “We’re excited about this latest leap forward in trailer tracking, which we will make available to all customers to help them better manage their rental and lease trailers,” noted Bill Franz, XTRA’s president and CEO in a statement. “One of the most important services we can deliver to fleets is the ability to identify dormant and under-utilized rental trailers. That way, fleet managers can target low-use trailers and return them to XTRA Lease or deploy them elsewhere in their operation,” he added. “Our new trailer tracking dashboard takes this concept to a new level.” Franz pointed out that the improved battery performance offered by the solar-powered SkyBitz trailer tracking product will be a critical benefit. “Customers require outstanding battery performance,” he stressed. “In fact, we believe today trailer tracking without solar power is like spaghetti without meatballs.” XTRA and SkyBitz are also collaborating to create a new webbased portal that delivers the critical trailer tracking data needed by
fleet managers to better manage their rental and leasing fleets. The new portal will feature: • Near real-time dynamic location reporting. Trailers report in at
the beginning and end of every trip and at 30-minute intervals when they’re moving. They report in daily when not moving. • A more “robust” dashboard. Dormancy, utilization, a list of trailers, a map of current trailer locations and counts, plus more will be clearly displayed on one web page. • Customized tracking. The portal will feature custom landmarks and trailer groups that will enable fleet managers to track what’s important to their specific operation. • Interactive mapping. Powered by Google, interactive maps will display the current locations of trailers and number of trailers at each location. All of those services will be offered for free on rented and leased over-the-road trailers, XTRA added.

of all the orders he accepts. In larger companies, there are dedicated salespersons that negotiate the rate and terms with customers. Smaller companies usually authorize dispatchers to negotiate rate and payment terms. What ever the case may be, these should be finalized before confirming the order. 4. Pickup and Delivery Information: The full addresses of the pickup and delivery locations, expected or scheduled times for the pickups and deliveries, routing requirements, contact person’s name and phone number, docking station number, pickup number and any safety requirement information needs to be collected during the order taking process. 5. Customs Broker Information: If the freight involves crossing international borders, customs broker information should be received from the customer in order to arrange customs clearance for the freight, including email addresses, phone and fax numbers, and hours of operation. 6. Penalties and other Terms: Any penalties for delay or other clauses should be taken into account. If the customer makes demands for penalties on such events as late arrivals or delivery, then the dispatcher or salesperson receiving the order can also negotiate extra payment charges for excess waiting time while loading or unloading, fuel surcharges, and other claimable expenses. NSC finds No State "Fully Captures" crash data
A
review by the National Safety Council (NSC) of motor vehicle crash reports from across the U.S. finds that no state “fully captures” critical data regarding incidences involving drunk and/or drugged drivers, distracted driving, and fatigued driving, among others. The findings are summarized in a new NSC report entitled: Undercounted is Underinvested: How incomplete crash reports impact efforts to save lives. The group said crash reports it investigated from all 50 states lack fields or codes for law enforcement to record the level of driver fatigue at the time of a crash, while 26 state don’t capture texting while driving occurrences, another 32 states lack fields to record hands-free cell phone use, and 32 lack fields to identify specific types of drug use if drugs are detected, including marijuana. States are also failing to capture teen driver restrictions (35 states), and the use of advanced driver assistance technologies (50 states), and of infotainment systems (47 states). “The road to zero deaths is paved with potholes,” noted Deborah Hersman, NSC’s president and CEO. “Someone is seriously injured

the ‘why’ and better data will enable us to make better decisions.” Preliminary estimates from the NSC indicate as many as 40,000 people died in car crashes in 2016. That marks a 6% increase over 2015 and a 14% increase over 2014 – the most dramatic two-year escalation since 1964. Without a clear understanding of the scope of the problem, regulations, laws and policies cannot be more effective. The NSC identified 23 specific crash factors that should be captured on crash reports. While no state is capturing data for all 23 fields, the group said Kansas and Wisconsin lead the nation by including fields and codes on reports for 14 of the factors NSC identifies as “critical.” By contrast, Maryland, Kentucky and Nebraska each are capturing just five of the 23 factors. Six states – Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, New York and Virginia – do not provide fields or codes for police to capture alcohol impairment at low levels, even though fatal crashes involving drivers with low blood alcohol content or BACs are not uncommon. Of the eight states that have decriminalized recreational marijuana use, only four states – Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington – include fields and codes to record positive marijuana results from drug tests. NSC is making several recommendations to correct those issues, which can be found at nsc.org/crashreport. Those recommendations include: • Filling out crash reports electronically • Updating forms more frequently to capture emerging issues such as fatigue and the use of new technologies by drivers • Adopting an “investigatory approach” to motor vehicles crashes • Using electronic data recorders to collect crash factors such as performance information on any advanced driver assistance system in the vehicle

I decided to get my life insurance license because I personally know a top agent who broke records worldwide selling insurance. The only problem was that she lied to all her clients. She told them lies such as the policy would be paid in 12 years, and now over 30+ years later none of her thousands of clients has a policy that was paid. She lied and now lost her license, but not before she made millions of dollars lying to innocent people. I want this behaviour to stop. I joined the industry to help protect people from the over abundance of dishonest and uneducated agents. Unfortunately the requirement to obtain a license to sell life insurance is a course that can take as little as a few weeks to complete. This depends on how much time the person has to study. Due to this, the industry is overrun with people who want a quick career. These are people that are pursuing the industry for quick money, instead of actually wanting to help people. They will say and do anything for a quick sale, often at the cost of the client who may unknowingly not be properly insured. I always offer a free review of clients existing policies. In EVERY single review that I have done, I have found an error done by their previous agent. I have found occupations that are incorrectly input, so the client actually has zero disability insurance coverage. They have been paying for years, for nothing. They are paying for a product that doesn’t cover them. The client correctly told the agent their occupation and it was the AGENT that input it incorrectly causing zero coverage. I have found price changes that were also not declared. Policies that go up in price and will become unaffordable by

retirement are not told to the client. People are completely unaware because they were NOT told by the agent and cannot read the policy and understand it. The agent that lies and says a universal life insurance policy that contains an investment component, will be paid in 20 years is still a lie being used today. I found one just last week. For that type of policy to pay off, it must earn on average 10.5-11.5% each and EVERY single for 20 years in a row, then remove the 2.5% management fees of the portfolio, and THEN the policy has a possibility of paying off in 20 years. Apparently these agents know more than Warren Buffet and Berkshire Hathaway because that is IMPOSSIBLE to do, and is a LIE. There are NO mutual funds that perform at that level each and every year. Being underinsured is also a big problem when I do reviews. Mortgage balances and young children are not accounted for, so if something happens to the family bread winner there will be a huge problem. The mortgage may not pay off, so the family has to now move and rent, and worse the children may not be able to afford the education and weddings of their dreams. This is all because your agent did not take the time to explain the deficiency. I advised one couple of the lack of insurance and they then called the agent to confront her who had done the bad job. The agent was so desperate that she begged the couple to not buy the corrected policy from me, but buy it from her because she is a widow and needs money. That is pathetic and unethical. This also shows that even her own family was ill insured and she is grossly unqualified. If she was doing her job properly her husband would have been heavily insured by her at the time of his death, but instead she begs for money. Do you want advice from someone who didn’t prepare herself and now has no money but thinks she can advise others on money? These are the type of agents in the field. To be an advisor of any kind, you need superior knowledge. This is a knowledge that gives you the ability to aid others on the topic on which you have expertise. Does a few week course give people that knowledge? I was talking to a friend about this situation and he said, “If you’re sick, do you want the top doctor who worked hard to be a top student, went to a top college, and works for a top hospital to do your surgery or do you want the person who got just by in school, was an average student and rejected by the local colleges and universities for poor grades and went to the Caribbean to get a medical degree?” The same goes for your insurance agent. Find one who went to a reputable UNIVERSITY, has life experience, and has qualifications beyond just the few week course. Don’t choose the mediocre, choose the BEST. I encourage you all to ask your agent of all their qualifications and carefully choose the right agent who will do a proper job. I really wish they would add a minimum bachelor’s degree from a qualified university component to the life insurance qualification. This would eliminate a lot of the bad agents and do so very rapidly. Remember, this agent holds the lives of your family in their hands, and they better be qualified to do so. So when you encounter an agent, ask them about their qualifications. If you do not feel they are qualified to handle you and your loved one’s, then find one who can. 52

CVSA Roadcheck planned for June 6-8
I
nternational Roadcheck is an annual three-day event when CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle and driver safety. This year’s International Roadcheck needs to be on the trucking industry’s calendar for June 6-8, 2017. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 72-hour safety blitz is in its 30th year in 2017. It is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute across North America during a 72-hour period. Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a category of violations. This year’s focus is cargo securement. While checking for compliance with safe cargo securement regulations is always part of roadside inspections, CVSA is highlighting cargo securement safety this year as a reminder of its importance to highway safety. Inspectors will primarily be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Drivers are required to provide items such as their driver’s license, hours-of-service documentation, motor carrier registration
and shipping documentation, and inspectors will be checking drivers for seat belt usage and the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, lighting devices (required lamps), steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, van and opentop trailer bodies, wheels, rims and hubs, windshield wipers and emergency exits (on buses). Since its inception in 1988, roadside inspections conducted during International Roadcheck have numbered more than 1.4 million. Roadcheck also provides an opportunity to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program. CVSA sponsors International Roadcheck with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico). In past years, jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada have actively participated in the program and publicized the number of inspections and out-of-service orders. There haven’t been any hard numbers out of Mexico in recent years.
Heavier loading does not increase shipping rates
T
he trucking industry is facing an interesting dilemma, significant increases in loads being shipped are not leading to increased shipping rates. A quick look at some of the shipping reports would seem to indicate things are trending positively. For example, imports in Los Angeles and Long Beach are up 26% over last year, loads available on the spot truckload market were up 46% over the prior month and 92% when compared to the same month last year. So why are prices soft? Why are some of the largest trucking companies in the country reporting decreased earnings or preparing investors for lower than expected profits? The answer is fairly simple. First, the increased tonnage available to ship has not made much of a dent in the nation’s shipping capacity. Furthermore, some of the larger players seem to be attempting to capture additional market share by keeping shipping rates depressed. So while increased shipping numbers are a cause for cautious optimism, it is still too early to declare an end to the recession of the past few years. 54

Así que sabemos que el mantenimiento preventivo es importante para el dueño y operador. ¿Pero qué tal para las compañías que cuentan con muchos camiones? ¿O grandes compañías de camionaje de carga? Es simple, toma la importancia de sólo un camión y multiplícalo por el número de camiones de carga dentro de la compañía. Además de eso, las compañías de carga podrían ser responsables de reglamentos con restricciones más escritos que sólo un operador por sí solo, discutiremos esto después. Para una compañía de carga para ser competitivo y efectivo, necesitará un plan apropiado PM listo, y en mi opinion, contar con un plan activo contra un plan reactivo. ¿Cuál es la diferencia? Bueno, en lugar de sufrir una descompostura del vehículo, que usted tendrá que arreglar (reactivo), lo que significa que no habrá tiempo de conducción, opta en realizar cuidado de mantenimiento constante (activo) para prevenir la restricción de conducción y así mismo la pérdida de ingresos. Sí, existe un costo contante cuando se es activo, pero como hemos escuchado a Atwal mencionar previamente, es mejor gastar péquenos centavos ajora y no grandes billetes después Y si tu inventario cuenta con 50 camiones, esto puede significar grandes cantidades de dinero que se están gastando innecesariamente. No solamente necesitamos trasportar las cargas por todo el país, nuestra compañía debe generar ingresos.” De acorde a esto, hemos notado que entre más compañías estén cubriendo sus primeras líneas de defensa, éstos siendo sus conductores, involucrarse. Los conductores entrenados apropiadamente. Pueden reducir las descomposturas con el reportar peligros potenciales o problemas inmediatos que afectan el desempeño de la carga. Por ende, al ser activo, los gerentes pueden resolver los problemas antes de que se tornen en problemas. Y no sólo trata con los costos financieros a un dueño operador o compañía; podría ser a algo peor. Con leyes nuevas y regulaciones que dictan responsabilidad, un dueño operador o compañía de carga podría ser considerado como negligente. Po definición, la responsabilidad precede al proveer a un operador con una herramienta peligrosa o parte del equipo, como un camión, sabiendo, o teniendo conocimiento, que el uso de dicho vehículo crea un riesgo de peligro hacia otros. Simplemente, un vehículo puede ser incautado y escudriñando. Al final, si existió mantenimiento irregular, el dinero sería lo último que un dueño o una compañía de carga consideraría. Don Ake, FTR Vice President of Commercial Vehicles, commented, “The trailer market had a great production month. The OEMs finally started to increase build rates due to the strong orders of the past four months. Builds jumped an impressive 9% on a per day level over February. Production was basically equal to last March, which is a great sign moving into the seasonally strong second quarter.” “The additional good news is the trailer vocational segments are showing some signs of life. Flatbed production was up considerably, as were dump trailers. The tanker segments are also moving in the right direction. These vocational segments continue to track closely with Class 8 trucks, which are also on the upswing. ¿Arrendamiento o Préstamo? Pash Brar
M
uchos de mis clientes preguntan con regularidad si un arrendamiento o préstamo para su siguiente compra de equipo, es mejor opción para ellos. Existen varias ventajas y desventajas para ambas opciones. Realmente depende en cada individuo o compañía que esté haciendo la compra y las circunstancias que le rodeen. Con un arrendamiento, la compañía arrendataria compra el equipo y éste es registrado bajo el nombre de la compañía arrendataria. El conductor o compañía luego realiza pagos en mensualidades por el uso del equipo. Una compañía arrendataria puede contar con restricciones en el equipo, tales como: no permitir alteraciones del equipo o restricciones en el kilometraje. También existe el valor residual al final del arrendamiento. El valor residual representa la cantidad por la cual el vehículo puede comprarse en su totalidad al concluir el término del arrendamiento. El vehículo puede volver a ser arrendado y existen opciones para que el vehículo vuelva ser 60

devuelto a la compañía arrendataria. Al regresar el equipo el valor residual podría tener que ser garantizado o una posible penalización podría ser impuesta. Trabajando con conductores diariamente, encuentro que la mayoría de ellos prefiere un arrendamiento contra un préstamo regular. Sin embargo, personalmente no quiero restringir el conducir o impedir el trabajo de un conductor de cualquier manera. Añado un valor residual de $1 para evitar restricciones y poder pagar el equipo en su totalidad. El conductor es compensado totalmente al final del arredramiento y se marchan con su equipo pagado en su totalidad. Esto permite a que los conductores trabajen el tiempo que deseen hacerlo y la cantidad de trabajo que quiera realizar está a su disposición. Con un arrendamiento pueden existir ciertas ventajas relacionados con impuestos. Los pagos e impuestos pueden ser utilizados como valor cancelado para impuestos (write-offs.) Los pagos son deducibles de impuestos y la porción GST puede ser
reclamada. Cargar los gastos de un arrendamiento se hace en lugar de depreciar el costo capital del equipo. El total del equipo no aparece en la hoja de balance, lo cual ayuda con los índices de deuda contra acciones. Con un préstamo tradicional, el equipo es puesto bajo el nombre del conductor, y es pagado por medio de mensualidades hasta que se pague en su totalidad justo igual que un préstamo de carro. He visto sólo unos cuantos clientes que han elegido esta opción, y cada uno de ellos lo hizo por la misma razón; quieren reclamar el GST inmediatamente. No podían solventar el enganche y necesitaban la cantidad GST de regreso para poder sobrellevar su situación económica después de que sus cuentas de banco fueron vaciadas en su totalidad. El reclamar el GST en una suma complete es una ventaja a comparación de un préstamo tradicional, pero si apenas puede cubrir el préstamo y no cuenta con ningún recurso para sobrevivir, quizás sea mejor opción continuar ahorrando dinero antes de hacer cualquier compra grande de equipo. Reclamando el GST no es un remedio rápido para una situación financiera difícil. Puede que sea solamente una solución temporaria para no sobre gastar y el mal manejo de sus finanzas. Vivo y trabajo en Vancouver, en el área de BC y trato, primordialmente, con conductores del área de BC. Nuestro impuesto de ventas Harmonized Sales Tax o HST por sus siglas en ingles fue removido en abril del 2013, lo cual trajo varios cambios con el prorrateo en BC que afectaron a conductores que poseían préstamos tradicionales. Específicamente, un impuesto de término de salida fue impuesto. No fue tan obvio hasta ahora que los
conductores están ocupados trabajando en primavera y verano y no hubo recortes en el prorrateo de sus específicos préstamos. Ahora, con las condiciones del invierno vigentes, algunos conductores les gusta tomar tiempo fuera del trabajo para sus vacaciones. Recortan su nivel de prorrateo y colocan seguro de almacenaje en su equipo. Si el equipo cesa de ser prorrateado, podrían ser sujetos a un impuesto de salida de 7 % del precio devaluado de la compra del equipo. Si el equipo es arrendado, no está sujeto a este impuesto de salida. Si el equipo es primordialmente utilizado en el área de BC, o si está registrado fuera de BC, entonces el equipo no está sujeto a este impuesto de salida. Aquellos con préstamos tradicionales pueden hallarse pagando $10,000 en equipo nuevo sólo para poder registrar sus niveles de prorrateo. Si cambia flotas, asegurase de conseguir un nuevo nivel de prorrateo ese mismo día, o el día siguiente para evitar pagar el impuesto de salida. En BC, llame a la oficina de seguro de prorrateo antes de considerar cancelar sus niveles, y su agente le brindara asesoría. Sé que mis clientes están bien protegidos del impuesto de salida por medio de arrendamientos que no son sujetos a este tipo de impuestos. Así que si busca comprar cualquier tipo equipo, es importante discutir esto con su contacto financiero o institución financiera para averiguar cuál es su mejor opción. Cada situación y cada cliente son distintos; así que discuta lo que es mejor para USTED, ya sea un préstamo o arredramiento, o incluso pagar todo al contado. Les aconsejo a mis clientes discutir con sus contadores también antes de tomar cualquier decisión de compra. ¿CUAL ES EL INFLADO CORRECTO DE MIS NEUMATICOS? Neumáticos que no están inflados apropiadamente son la causa más común del porque los neumáticos se deterioran prematuramente. Puedes evitar el reemplazo temprano y costoso de neumáticos con un poco de tiempo y sabiduría. El inflar apropiadamente es la respuesta. Así que.. ¿Cuál es el método apropiado de inflar? ¿Cómo se infla un neumático correctamente? ¿Cómo mantengo mis neumáticos inflados apropiadamente? DETERMINANDO EL INFLADO CORRECTO Utilizar una pipa de aire e inflar un neumático a 100psi no te proporciona un neumático inflado apropiadamente. Y el permitir que aire caliente salga de un neumático para disminuir la presión de aire no significa que vayas a tener un inflado apropiado. Un inflado apropiado es basado: por la carga, el tipo de neumáticos y la cuestión de añadir la presión adecuada de aire basada en la temperatura del neumático. Veamos como determinar el inflado correcto de un neumático. El peso de la carga determina cuanto peso existe sobre cada eje. SI la carga varia, es mejor utilizar el peso mayor. El peso de la carga del eje determina cuanta presión de aire es necesaria para que el neumático funcione apropiadamente. El inflado bajo permite que la llanta flexione demasiado, y con esto crea calor que destruye los neumáticos. Cada fabricante de neumáticos cuenta con una tabla de inflado al igual que de peso de carga. Puedes encontrar esta información en el internet o su concesionario local. La tabla de Michelin está localizada en http:www.michelintruck.com. El XLINE 275/80R22.5 G muestra 85psi para un eje con carga de 18,760 libras en los duales. Según esta tabla debes poner aire para la que presión de esta sea de 85psi. Psi representa las libras por pulgada cuadrada de presión. La presión del aire cambia según la

temperatura. La tabla del fabricante del neumático está basado en la temperatura del ambiente en donde este lo que es aproximadamente 70 grados Fahrenheit. Más en lo mencionado al último. INFLANDO LOS NEUMATICOS Determina la marca de tus llantas, al igual que el estilo y tamaño y visita el sitio de web del fabricante para chequear la tabla. Ahora, lo único que necesitas es inflar las llantas. Pero, ¡Espera! No es tan simple. Los fabricantes recomiendan que chequees la presión de los neumáticos antes de conducir cuando éstos estén con temperatura templada. Los neumáticos que estén calientes por dentro no mostrarán un número de presión de aire exacto. Es más beneficiario ajustar la presion de aire después de que un camión de carga ha estado estacionados por varias horas, o mejor aún, si ha estado sin conducir por toda la noche. La temperatura de afuera y la de adentro del neumático debe ser la misma. Esto es a lo que se refiere cuando se dice ajustar la presion a “frio.” Generalmente, toma como 20 minutos chequear un camión de carga de 18 ruedas y debe hacerse una vez por semana o como sea necesario dependiendo los cambios de las cargas. MANTENIENDO EL INFLADO APROPIADO DE LAS LLANTAS Consigue un indicador de presion de neumáticos profesional y calíbralo con regularidad. Conoce el peso de carga en cada eje según la carga particular. Ajusta la presion del neumáticos según la tabla de inflado/peso del fabricante. Asegúrate que los neumáticos duales tengan los mismos niveles psi. O por lo menos 5psi de diferencia uno a otro. Ajusta la presion del aire a “frio.” Después de que el camión/ camión de carga ha estado sin moverse por 3 o 4 horas. Chequea los neumáticos de desgaste prematuro, fugas o daño. Utiliza una botella de rociador de agua con jabón para revisar si existen fugas. El calor generado cuando los neumáticos flexionan y hacen contacto con el pavimento incrementa la temperatura del aire dentro del neumático. Si los neumáticos han sido apropiadamente inflados, esto es normal y no es necesario ajustar la presion de estos. El conocer el inflado apropiado según la regla de PSI, la temperatura correcta e inflar las llantas sólo cuando lo necesiten tomando nada más 20 minutos a la semana puede incrementar las ganancias y alejarte de los talleres de neumáticos.
