I’ve heard of the saying, “There’s no ‘I’ in team…but there’s a Me,” something at which most team builders would shake their head. But I will admit that for a team to be successful, the ‘me’ needs to be first. Even psychologists agree that a person must be content with him/ herself before having an impact on others. So, in order to build a strong team, build yourself up first, with knowledge, commitment, and integrity. Then work on building a great team. Speaking of team, the team of the APNA Truck Show worked tirelessly to present an amazing show on June 15th and 16th at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC. In addition to a sold-out show and record numbers for attendance, there was $50,000 raised for the KidsPlay Foundation. Once again, a big thank you to Hyundai Translead and Kingpin Trailers for their generous donation of a trailer that was raffled off as the grand prize. This year’s winner, Tariq Malik, was more than overjoyed in winning the grand prize. The team at Desi Trucking has been working on a new layout of the magazine, which will be revealed as the next issue. Those little tweaks used to be only done by the driver but at least the driver could and did assess his or her own capabilities before making a tweak. been removed from the driver and now a dispatcher can and does make the determination without the knowledge of weather considerations, without the knowledge of the well-being of the driver or even care about such triteness. The government, on the other hand, in its infinite wisdom, decided that all truck drivers lie therefore to be safe, they’ll force the hours of service to be recorded by a computer application. That will make things safer. Not only will it make things safer, it won’t cost the taxpayer a dime because the truckers will be the ones that have to pay whatever is being charged for these computer applications. But the same government won’t allow the trucker to

In one recorded case of ELD tampering, the carrier had a repair issue when the driver was starting his shift and had conducted his daily vehicle inspection. The repair took nine hours while the driver had to sit around eating up the driver’s ability to start a full fourteen hours. The carrier insisted the driver ensure delivery during that shift but the ELD proved the shift had started nine hours earlier. The driver felt forced to continue to the customer and did however well past the end of the ELD recorded shift, the driver was involved in a serious fatal collision. In this case, the ELD told investigators the shift started at the DVI and the carrier said the shift began at the finish of the repair. The carrier should not

pass along this extra expense. There are cases where carrier management manipulates the HOS to allow (force) drivers to overwork while looking legal. Facility Audits may be able to determine if changes were effected after the fact but there can never be sufficient audits to catch the cheaters. The government has to rely on the honesty of the carriers and having punishments in place that make breaches of honesty more than can be considered the cost of doing business. The problem is the driver remains responsible for the hours of service breaches even though changes may be made after submission and without his knowledge. EDL suppliers must include methodologies to prevent after submission tampering or at the very least have unerasable red flags that appear when tampering has occurred.

ELDs appear they can help reduce administration; certainly ELDs can reduce the time to file paper in a findable fashion. ELDs can have space to store realms of paper. Certainly, ELDs reduce the paperwork for the driver. But what ELDs are having some difficulty in protecting driver entered information from anyone else who may have a vested interest in making modifications. except the person whose hours have been recorded, if there is a need for such modification at all. The Government has to regulate ELD suppliers not allowing those same ELD suppliers to regulate themselves. The Government has to totally rethink the hours of service rules and stop the tinkering and tweaking that has been the bane of existence for truckers this past decade or so. The driver must be the only person in the position to say, “I cannot accomplish the task within the time frame required.” This decision can’t be made by anyone remote, no matter, can pressure be applied by anyone remote which clearly isn’t the case with every carrier. Human beings are not robots and are subject to pressures from more sources than from their employer. There may be days when the driver is more than capable of running well in excess of that which is permitted and there are days when that same hard runner just can’t get out of bed let alone accomplish 700 miles. But on average, that hard runner still operates in the 90th percentile of hard runners. Driver managers have been, may still be, paid bonuses for forcing drivers to push beyond physical capabilities. ELDs may simply be a recording device and a storage device of hours of service for truck drivers and is. But it’s the Hours of Service rules and regulations that dictate a driver’s every moment. Not just the waking moments but every moment. Drivers must feel in control of their hours and be able to earn a decent living for their efforts. Drivers must be able to also say, this weather is simply too bad to be safe and not be second guessed by someone who has no idea of the conditions. The driver is well aware of those who are depending on him or her to do the task. The driver also is well aware that far too often, shutting down for safety is simply not an option. Recently, there have been a dearth of Hiring Fairs for recruiters to find new drivers. Unfortunately, none of the experts are advising recruiters to consider the working environment of truckers. While a fair pay structure is critical, it’s the other undiscussed elements, seemingly unrelated, that cause the churning so prevalent in trucking. The government wants safety, then they need to allow the only person available to assess tiredness that ability to be able to override the carrier’s pressures. WESTERN EDITION

Transportation Minister Garneau Announces ELD Regulations

C

anada is making electronic logging devices mandatory for federally regulated commercial truck and bus drivers in an effort to combat driver fatigue and improve road safety. It’s easy for the masses to be led by government into thinking they’re being told the implementation of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) when its agenda driven spin. Electronic devices track when and how long drivers have been behind the wheel. They are tamper-resistant by the driver but not the company and integrated into commercial vehicle engines, and are designed to ensure long-haul drivers stick to their daily driving limit and log their hours accurately. During a news conference in suburban Toronto, Transport Minister Marc Garneau said the new requirement will come into force on June 12, 2021, replacing paperbased daily logbooks to ensure drivers

There was rust and also a lot of paint issues on some of the older combination trailers but that can depend on the owner and how well they took care of the trailer too. Aluminum trailers have no paint other than the rear suspensions. They usually come standard with aluminum landing legs. All steel combo trailers have painted main frames which will require sandblasting and painting at some time in the future which could be as early as 5 years or less. If you don’t want to deal with rust and paint issues, than aluminum may be a better choice. Some aluminum trailers can cost more up front but some dealerships prices are competitive with combination trailer prices and may even cost less. do you know that are all aluminum? There are none because they are steel. To compensate that aluminum is less strong than steel, the aluminum is made thicker on the trailer. Aluminum can also form a memory. For example if repeated pressure is put on the same spot over and over, cracks can possibly form and in an extreme case a dealership advised a client who bought a used aluminum trailer had it snap and break. You cannot know where the memory may have formed on a trailer

when buying used. That is an extreme example of a 10 year old trailer and who knows what that trailer was used for, and of course technology has advanced since then so I don’t think one extreme one off example should deter your decision to buy an all-aluminum trailer. Do you want an all-aluminum bolt together design or a welded frame trailer? Some manufacturers offer an all-aluminum bolt together flat semi which allows ease of repair should damage occur. Most other manufacturers use a welded frame and side rails that will eventually fatigue, and repairs are not easily accomplished and or as cost effective. The bolt together design also allows the trailer to be completely built without changing the structural strength of the metal due to welding. What features do you want on your trailer? One very popular option is reverse-a-matic. It’s a great safety feature which automatically lifts the steer axle when the trailer is in reverse. I know one dealership is offering it on stock trailers, but if you want this option you may have to do a custom order. Another feature in high demand is cam lock doors on the tool boxes. They can take a few inches of space in your tool box for the bolt, but they are 18

virtually no maintenance. Speaking of tool boxes, how many tool boxes do you want? Most choose two, but if you want more, you can custom order them. Also does size matter? A lot of driver’s are opting for larger tool boxes which are part of custom ordered trailers. Slide out wide load lights are usually a must as well. I’ve seen some drivers refuse a trailer that didn’t have them. Light configurations are a hot topic. As long as there are three lights in the middle to meet DOT safety requirements, do as you wish. A very common light configuration I see is OOO ooo OOO. The choice is yours. After a driver has told me everything he wants on the trailer and says it’s perfect, my favorite part is looking at them and saying “where are you going to hang your chains?” “Oh YEAH!” I always suggest adding some chain hangars as it’s very convenient! It also costs less to add them in a custom order than adding it after market. Many options do end up costing less on a custom order than if you add to them an existing trailer. So always consider the cost of options and the overall price of your trailer. Obviously the more options you choose the more it will cost. There can be some pretty big price differences between each manufacturer. Some are priced in US Dollar, so in Canada, that makes a huge difference in price. Exchange rate plays a big role because parts often come from the United States, so it affects the overall price of the trailer. You don’t have much control over the price of an in stock trailer, but you can control the price of a custom order. Do you HAVE to have 3 tool boxes and Michelin tires? If yes, then be ready to pay for it. Do you need a trailer now or do you want to wait for a custom order? Every trailer manufacturer I spoke to stated it would take 3-4 months to do a custom order, and one USA trailer takes 6-9 months. If you do not currently have a trailer and are renting, paying rent for 6-9 months will cost you well over $15,000 in rent. Add that cost to your trailer. Is a wait for that long really worth it? As a driver or company you are in business to make money. If you feel like losing all that money to wait go ahead. Or do you get a trailer that’s available much sooner and get to work and make some money!

What type of deck do you want on the trailer? Do you want some wood on it or allaluminum. I know one US manufacturer is having major issues with the screws in the deck. They keep popping out and I keep getting complaints from clients. Some manufacturers offer compression fit floor sections so the floors stay tight so there are no broken screws, while also utilizing fewer screws . What type of harness do you want? Peterson wiring harness and lights that utilize a triple seal packard type connection seem to be the highest standard because they provide the best possible corrosion proof harness in the industry. If a lower quality or cheaper harness is used it may ultimately lead to harness issues in 5-8 years. There is a lot more to trailers than “that one looks nice.” There is so much more but not enough room in this article to discuss everything! Who is going to service and warranty your trailer? If you bought in the USA and there is no dealership in Canada, this becomes an issue. How long is the warranty on the structure and the components? A big issue is the warranty sometimes stays with only the original owner. If the trailer is sold while under warranty, the second owner is now minus a warranty. Ask the manufacturer if the warranty carries to the new owner. I often see Canadian driver’s who pay cash for a trailer in the USA, and then finance it once it gets to Canada. Surprise, the ownership just changed to your bank and your warranty is now void. Just remember that every component affects the weight and price of the trailer. Trucking is your job and your job is to make money using the best trailer for you based on the needs of hauling your loads. The focus on lower weight trailers is because trucks are much heavier now due to so many regulations. Instead of focussing on the weight of the truck and trying to get it lower, the focus has all been on the trailer. Drivers don’t want to compromise the fancy luxury features of their truck nor features on their trailers. They want two dunnage racks! May I ask you, are you paid to haul a load, or to haul your dunnage? To make more money you need to haul more. Trailers which haul much less from the start are a decision to make less money overall. But that is YOUR decision. Weight is a key component, but the weight of BOTH your truck and trailer TOGETHER need to be the focus and not just the trailer alone. WESTERN EDITION

hen a member of Canada’s Armed Forces falls in combat, his or her final journey is along the Highway of Heroes from CFB Trenton to the Coroner’s Office in Toronto. TRUCK SHOW 2019 The 2019 APNA Truck Show was a huge success and it proved once again to be the largest and most attended trucking event in Western Canada. As in the past, the show booths were spectacular, offering visitors a lot to see and learn. And this year, the APNA Truck Show was a sold out event with respect to booth space; so thank you once again for your confidence. Last year, we were fortunate to have Hyundai Translead and Kingpin Trailers donate a 53’ trailer that was won by Hardev Bajwa, who used his own truck to pull the trailer home after the show. This year, once again, Hyundai Translead and Kingpin Trailers came through with another 53’ trailer, and this year, the winner was Tariq Malik. Congratulations to Tariq! This year, our charity of choice was the Kids Play Foundation, who’s vision is to keep our streets and communities safe by organizing sports tournaments, conferences, and other projects for our youth so they stay away from the lifestyle of gangs, violence, and drugs. As per estimates, $50,000 was raised for the Kids Play Foundation and we’d like to thank all of you who purchased tickets. he semi-truck driver who was killed in a fiery crash near the Deltaport container terminal in mid-June was a Surrey resident. Authorities haven’t shared the man’s name but confirmed that his family has been notified of the tragedy. Two semi-trucks driving in opposite directions crashed head-on and burst into flames on Deltaport Way at around 9:45 a.m. on June 13th. The accident forced emergency crews to shut down the causeway to the terminal, preventing any other vehicles from coming or going and creating a backup of commercial trucks that stretched for kilometres. One day later, police said it’s still unclear what caused the collision.

“The investigation remains ongoing as to the cause of this crash, and police will not be commenting on this time on possible factors involved,” the Delta Police Department said in a statement. Part of Deltaport Way remained closed for about 17 hours as police conducted what they described as a complex investigation into the crash. Clearing away the destroyed semi-trucks was also a complicated task, authorities said, and an environmental cleanup was required on site. The road fully reopened after 3 a.m. Friday. Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam video taken in the area at the time to come forward.

Trucker Creates Fitness Bench to Promote a Healthy Lifestyle

T

rucker David Copeland, created a portable fitness bench after he saw truck drivers become accustomed to unhealthy lifestyles. “You look at any truck stop you go to and you watch the truckers get out of the truck, the first thing you’re going to see is obesity,” says Copeland. Copeland understands how hard it is to stay fit on the road, especially as a trucker. David recognizes that truckers can be on the road for long periods of time, and knows that the profession doesn’t lend itself to a healthy lifestyle. Copeland wanted to help bring about positive change. “It only weighs 25 pounds, it breaks down, it’s easy, easy to store, so if the truck driver is picking up a load [and] they’re going to be there at least 30 minutes or an hour they can break the machine out and work out on the body,” Copeland said as he described his creation. Copeland introduced his fitness bench to truckers at the ‘Truckers Jamboree’ in Joplin; an even for truckers to celebrate what they do and learn what’s new in the industry. 34

Volvo Trucks to Introduce Next Iteration of Volvo Active Driver Assist in VNR, VNL & VNX Models

V

olvo Active Driver Assist (VADA) 2.0, a comprehensive collision mitigation system, will be made standard in the new Volvo VNR and VNL models, and available on VNX models, later this year. The system enhances the original VADA platform by integrating radar and camera capabilities to help drivers maintain a safe following distance through alerts and improved traffic awareness, as well as emergency braking to reduce the risk of collisions. “The Volvo Active Driver Assist technology we first introduced with Bendix Wingman Fusion in 2017 was a groundbreaking achievement for increased efficiency and safety through automation,” said Johan Agebrand, product marketing director, Volvo Trucks North America. “Continuing that partnership, we have improved the capabilities of this collision mitigation technology across the board and are confident that VADA 2.0 will further enhance safety for all motorists.” VADA is a comprehensive collision mitigation system launched by Volvo Trucks North America in 2017 which uses camera and radar sensors to detect motorized vehicles within the vehicle’s proximity. The technology enables a series of features to activate driver alerts and foundation braking according to information detected by these advanced sensors. Available in Q3 2019, with improvements scheduled to roll out through late 2020, VADA 2.0 offers enhancements to many features including: • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) uses camera and radar sensors to determine how traffic is behaving around the truck. When a vehicle is detected, audible and visual warnings

alert the driver to take action. If the driver does not respond, AEB engages to mitigate potential collisions. VADA 2.0 expands the capability of AEB beyond the current VADA, allowing it to operate across multiple lanes of traffic. Lane Departure Warning (LDW) alerts the driver when an unintentional lane departure occurs. VADA 2.0 allows for adjustable volume and audio mute override options and enables drivers to turn off the system momentarily (10 minutes) for select functions. Highway Departure Warning and Braking (HDB) automatically activates if the driver does not take corrective action after a Lane Departure Warning and the system detects that the vehicle may leave the drivable roadway, slowing the vehicle by a pre-defined MPH. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Cruise Auto Resume enables the truck to revert back to cruising speed with Cruise Auto Resume (also known as “Slow & Go”) at speeds above 10 mph, an improved feature in VADA 2.0. Driver Awareness Support offers an incab windshield-mounted camera with

data capture support to enhance driver coaching and data availability.

Warning. VADA 2.0 complements safe driving practices and is not intended to enable or encourage aggressive driving. No commercial vehicle safety technology replaces proactive, comprehensive driver training and a skilled, alert driver exercising safe driving techniques. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at all times.

I

t’s no surprise that SUV’s are the hottest selling vehicles nowadays and have been for many years. There’s an appeal to them that just works – you’ve got (usually) all-wheel drive, a higher seating position, comfortable seating for five, and of course, a vehicle that gives you versatility. A few years ago, a new look for the SUV was launched – the coupe, with BMW and its X6. Many thought the look wouldn’t take off, but boy were they wrong. Within a very short time, other manufacturers launched their versions of the SUV coupe and now, it’s become quite popular.

BMW’s 2019 coupe, the X4 M40i was made available to us and thankfully, during the winter season. It’s just better to test an SUV in conditions when it’s useful. BMW has always made impressive vehicles; even their slogan of “the ultimate driving machine” goes to show their confidence in their products. So, does the 2019 X4 M40i sound like something you want in your driveway? Well, let’s find out. Why Buy the 2019 X4 M40i: That Engine: The X4 has two powertrain options, but we’re not even talking about the 4-cylinder here. The M40i has a 3.0L turbocharged straight six-cylinder that puts out 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft. of torque through an 8-speed transmission. Is it fast? Well, it will get you from 0 – 100 km/h in about 4.8 seconds, which is faster than the Mercedes GLC 43, Audi SQ5, and even the Porsche Macan S. So yes, it’s quick. That Drive & Handling: BMW isn’t about to build a vehicle that doesn’t match its heritage, and here too, the X4 M40i shines through. First of all, the X4 gets adaptive dampers, which are great for making a softer daily commute; at the same time, they adapt to more aggressive and spirited driving on the weekends. What’s even cooler is that the adaptive system is paired with the GPS system, and in a way, can preload the dampers for upcoming roads situations. Next, depending on the driving mode of choice (there are five), the steering becomes light or heavy, with the latter in Sport Mode. Also, when in Sport Mode, the exhaust pops enthusiastically, making it sound very sporty. BMW steering has always been great, and the X4 M40i’s doesn’t disappoint. Finally, this coupe is equipped with larger brake discs that stop it on a dime.

That Top-Notch Interior: The interior of 2019 X4 is both elegant and modern, and for BMW owners, familiar. The M Sport leather seats are supportive, yet comfortable and offer a good balance for both daily and spirited commuting. There is leather all around, complete with leather stitching as well. Then there’s that gorgeous gauge cluster, digital of course, that really adds something to the eyes. Yes, some of the features of this X4 are part of expensive optional packages, but hey, if you’re going drive this BMW, you might as well opt it out properly. JULY - AUGUST 2019

That Technology: There’s a tonne of technology in this car, just as you would expect. You’ve got the basics in terms of safety, but there’s more, and you’ve got to pay for it. For example, the Premium Package Enhanced gives satellite radio, gesture control, Wi-Fi hotspot, ambient lighting and more. You’ve also got a huge heads-up display, which is 75% larger than the previous year. Then of course, there’s BMW’s iDrive system. Compared to previous generations, it’s come a long way and is actually very nice. However, that being said, for some basic functions, you have to navigate through menus, which I find tedious. In addition, the gesture control is cool, where you can increase/decrease volume, and even answer and reject calls by simple gestures of your finger or hand; but, after a while, it becomes a novelty. And finally, if you have an Android, you’re out of luck – no Android Auto, but Apple users, the iPhone is fully integrated. Why Pass on the X4 M40i: Styling: I know I’m going to get some flak for this because it’s a discussion I’ve had with fellow journalists and general society; the census is mixed. Some love the styling while others don’t. Personally, I think it’s a smart looking vehicle, but not quite as aggressive looking as the BMW X6, which I like a lot. The closest comparison can be made with the Mercedes GLC Coupe. Both cars are appealing, but I would give the edge to the X4 based on a

better front end. That being said, styling is purely subjective, and the same can be said for this coupe. Interior Space: Even though the X4 is longer and wider than the previous generation, the interior, especially the back seat, feels somewhat cramped. It’s almost the same size as the X3, and I would expect more. Mix that with the raking roofline, and you’ve got a back seat that might feel claustrophobic for taller passengers. Front head, shoulder, and foot space is good though. Another thing to note is that compared to a non-coupe, i.e. the X3, there is less cargo room – again this is due to the styling and slanting roofline of the vehicle. Pricy Optional Packages: Yes, the base price for the X4 M40i is $66,000 – but let me say it again, it’s the base price. Add in some optional packages the sticker tag goes up quite quickly. Our fully optioned test vehicle was just shy of $80,000. That’s a lot of money, especially when the X5 starts at $71,500 and the X6 starts at $73,350. Final Thoughts: To say that sedans are becoming stale would be premature. But we can with surety say that SUV’s are the hottest selling vehicles today because of all they have to offer. The BMW X4 M40i is a great coupe that would fit and fulfil most buyers’ needs and wants. Its BMW heritage and new modern styling definitely make it worth considering if you’re in the market for an SUV in this category.

Does Driverless Mean Driverless?

A

three-year-old startup, Starsky Robotics, is developing autonomous trucks that have remote capabilities. Co-founder and Chief Executive, Stefan Seltz-Axmacher, differentiates the company by saying that instead of focusing on a fully driverless truck, he hopes to pair a “unique combination of human decision-making and automation.” Seltz-Axmacher continued to explain how their technology will be a benefit for truckers by saying, “While others are trying to build fully autonomous trucks, we are building a truck that drives with no person in it and is remote-controlled for the first and last mile and that’s a completely different mindset. We are not eliminating drivers’ jobs. Instead, we are moving them from a truck to a safe and comfortable office where they utilize years of their longhaul trucking experience, but remain close to their families and go home between shifts”

Currently, the company operates a fleet of over-the-road trucks to support its automation growth and identify qualified drivers to test out the remote program. Seltz-Axamacher also sees Starsky Robotics solving longstanding problems in the trucking industry. The American Trucking Association states that the large fleet turnover rate was at 89% in 2018, an increase of 2% from the previous year. “A huge problem in trucking in North America is that it’s really hard to get people to spend a month at a time on the road,” Seltz-Axmacher said. The company also believes they can make trucking a more appealing career. Seltz-Axmacher spoke to the deep personal sacrifices that currently need to be made by truckers and “making driving an office job uniquely solves the long-haul trucking problem…we’ve found that most would love to come home to their family after a long day.” WESTERN EDITION

Two Months to Switch from AOBRD to ELD in US, 2021 in Canada

T

he FMCSA issued a reminder to warn drivers that they only have two more months to switch from Automatic Onboard Recording Devices (AOBRD) to the mandated ELDs. The FMCSA said via a June 18 Facebook post that “By December 16, 2019, all motor carriers presently using an Automatic Onboard Recording Device, must switch over to an Electronic Logging Device registered with FMCSA.

Transport Canada announced this month that it will mandate electronic logging devices (ELDs) as of June 2021 – more than three years after the U.S. first required the time-tracking equipment in the place of paper logbooks. There is still work to do as well. The new rules apply only to federally regulated carriers. Provincial and territorial rules have yet to be unveiled, although transportation ministers for these jurisdictions have already promised to find “harmonized” ground.

CVSA Looks to Hold Shippers Responsible for Sealed Improperly Secured Loads

T

he Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is seeking input on how to hold shippers accountable for improperly secured loads. Who’s to blame for load securement violations of sealed loads in cargo van and intermodal containers? Right now, if a cargo securement violation is found in a sealed container, it’s the driver who may end up with a violation ticket or citation and could be placed out of service. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance wants suggestions on how to hold shippers responsible for improperly secured loads. In a letter sent to regulating agencies in the U.S. and Canada – including FMCSA Administrator Ray Martinez – CVSA executive director Collin Mooney writes that issuing citations or out-of-service orders to drivers “does not address the root cause of the improperly secured load” because those loads are initially secured by shippers that don’t always let the driver inspect what’s in the trailer. “Shippers need to properly secure the contents of the load prior to sealing, therefore not risking the safety of the driver or the motoring public,” the letter states. “Loads that move from the shipper to a motor carrier in the current practice place the responsibility on the receiver of the freight. When loads change hands while in transit, the responsibility is on the receiving party that last signed responsibility of the load, which includes ensuring that all proper cargo securement requirements have been met. This practice is often difficult for the driver because many shippers have a policy that drivers cannot break the seal to inspect the load.” CVSA says it has developed a working group made up of law enforcement and industry officials to identify solutions to these problems and is seeking feedback from regulators as well. In the letter, the alliance asks the agencies to look into how responsibility for load securement violations can be properly assigned. WESTERN EDITION

Trucking Companies Expect Rates to Fall

T

rucking companies expect rates to drop as a result of the economy slowing down. According to Merrill Lynch, an overwhelming majority of trucking companies expect shipping rates to either fall or stay flat. The bank came to this conclusion as its Truckload Diffusion Indicator dropped to its weakest level since October 2016. One of the shippers surveyed by Merrill Lynch notes that the conditions in Florida were “the quietest he has seen it, in his 20 years in Florida through May and June.” The bank’s data also pointed out that this slow down could turn into something much worse, especially without an immediate end in sight to the Trade War with China. The Cass Freight Index also shows the same sluggish conditions and backs up Merrill Lynch, as it fell for the fifth straight month in May. Cass Freight warned that “weakness in spot market pricing for many transportation services, especially trucking, is consistent with the negative Cass Shipments Index and … strengthens our concerns about the economy and the risk of ongoing trade policy disputes.”

accar is recalling certain model year 2020 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks for an issue regarding rearview mirrors, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents. More specifically, more than 4,000 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks are affected by the recall. The mirror glass may detach from the mirror carrier plate because of inadequate adhesion, according to NHTSA. If the mirror glass detaches, the driver may have reduced visibility and the mirror glass will become a road hazard that may strike another vehicle or pedestrian, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Owners of affected trucks will be notified by Paccar. Dealers will inspect and replace the upper mirror glass and mirror carrier. Recalls began May 31.
