And while we are out to sea we learn more about two unlikely best friends along the magical waters of the Irish coast. Here in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties we are fortunate to have so many highly trained and caring veterinarians. Learn about the incredible love and dedication of one of our local vets and her efforts to save, rehabilitate, and give a whole new life to a very neglected dog named GiGi. Before purchasing Suds ‘N Scissors in 1994, Todd previously owned and ran three businesses: Country Club Kennels, Santa Cruz Animal Care, and Tatoha Trainers. Growing up half of the time in Santa Cruz and half of the time on the East Coast, Todd started showing dogs when he was just 15 years old. Todd brings his show background to his work at Suds ‘N Scissors, which includes attention to detail, hand-scissoring, show-quality shampoos and conditioners, and help in training puppies and rescued dogs so they become comfortable during the grooming process.
Todd also prides himself on his breed-specific cuts. He believes a Poodle should look like a Poodle and a Bichon should look like a Bichon—and the same for every breed. “Please, help this poor dog. I’m typing this with tears falling. She was mine and I found her a home years ago. I just found out she was not being taken care of. And now she has major issues. And I’m dying inside. I let this happen to her. I’m responsible. I am consumed by her condition. I would love if someone there, at Cottage Vet, could take her. I just want her surrounded by love.” The dog was left in a crate in the waiting room at Cottage Veterinary Care in Pacific Grove. The man in the hoodie walked quickly out of the vet clinic and down the street before anyone could talk with him. Lea, a staff member, ran out after him, but he had disappeared quickly into the early morning fog. Lea came back into the building, grabbed the crate and dog and rushed it back to Dr. Kim Wilkins, the owner of the clinic. The smell coming from the crate was horrific. It smelled like death. The living being inside the crate was barely recognizable as a dog. All of her nails were several inches long. She was a matted mess. She was a Shih Tzu who had obviously not been groomed in years. Her fur and mats were bound so tightly she had most likely been unable to move or walk for years.

ur fifteen-year-old Pug, Chica, walks with a lot more pep in her step. Her barks have gained frequency and volume. She’s down seven teeth, but life is looking up in every other department. In late 2016, when our veterinarian told us Chica’s teeth were too decayed to be treated in her office, we were dismayed. We were referred to Dr. Judith Force, the only board-certified veterinary dentist on the Central Coast. We felt Chica was too old for such a surgery. Reluctantly, I made the appointment, then cancelled twice (even incurring a penalty!), out of fear of her not making it through such a major procedure. In retrospect, I wish we hadn’t put it off so long; we now have 18 | coastalcaninemag.com | Summer 2017
a dog that acts as if she is years younger. We call her “our puppy.” Dentistry for dogs is a relatively new discipline, and Dr. Judith Force is at the forefront of the industry. One of relatively few board-certified animal dentists in the United States (she is the only one between the Bay Area and Los Angeles), she has practiced on animal teeth exclusively for twelve years. A veterinarian since 1986, she took an interest in dentistry while working at the Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital, where she began tinkering with a plethora of rarely used dental equipment. She decided to devote herself to learning as much about dentistry as she could, even training with human dentists in the early years. Dr. Force handles extensive cases like Chica’s, during which time the old pooch was under anesthesia for a couple hours while having her bad teeth extracted. Dr. Force also strives to save teeth

that other vets would have to pull. “These animals have chronic inflammation—they have chronic pain. But, they can hide it. It’s like, 'My mouth hurts and that's how it is.’ But, they still eat and play with toys.” Many dog guardians first notice trouble in their pet’s mouth just by looking, or from a chronic, foul smell. dog Bella to the doggy dentist after a change in mouth odor. “We brush her teeth every day, but this smell was not going away, so we took her to the vet.” Others, such as Jennifer Higbee, see a loss of appetite or impaired ability to eat. “I noticed my Pug, Libby, wasn’t eating as normal, and that her gums were swollen and looked infected.” Higbee hesitated because Libby was a senior and also brachycephalic, or a “flat-faced breed,” which can have more trouble with anesthesia. But, her Libby actually had an inexplicable—call it a “near miraculous”—reaction to her tooth extractions. “Three years ago, Libby started to walk wobbly and became incontinent. I took her to the vet, [who] did a few simple tests and determined a spinal issue. I took her home, and her back legs continued to get weaker. We had to use diapers, a doggie wheelchair, and for basically three years, she was paralyzed. After the teeth cleaning and the removal of teeth, she began to use her back legs!” One-eyed senior dog Penny has had fourteen teeth extracted, so her guardian, Louise Farley, says Penny’s tongue hangs out at all time but the dog is now happy, healthy and double the weight

she was before surgery. The surgery has also left Kelsey Binkley’s household more at peace. “Before her surgeries, Bella was irritable and grumpy and it was obvious she was in pain and discomfort. After surgery, she has been yipping, smiling, and running around, even going so far as to try to play with our other dogs!” Ellie Singh reports similar results. She says eleven-year-old Jessie isn’t the sweetest dog but is now one of the spunkiest. “She is a Chihuahua, so she was already feisty and is even more so now! She jumps around and chases people and dogs. She’s not the friendliest puppy, but she sure does have unconditional love for her family and loves to snuggle more after her dentistry.”
This all occurred within one week of her surgery. Dental surgery is not inexpensive; it can be downright pricey. Surgery can range from several hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the case. The cost will usually include testing to see if your dog is healthy enough for the procedure. Other vets do routine teeth cleaning and simple extractions for much, much less. Some pet insurance plans actually cover cleaning and extractions. Consult your vet, do some research, and see what’s right for your dog and your wallet. We’re fortunate to have many experts in our Central Coast area who treat canine teeth. As a true “dog-laden

The Dental Therapy Dog By Carie Broecker
Dentophobia – It’s a real thing! There are people who haven’t been to the dentist in years because of their fear of dental offices, dentists, and dental procedures. From mild to severe anxiety, the fear is real and it can bring dental patients to tears, cause them to skip appointments, or get up and walk out before sitting in the dental chair.
One five-pound Zen master in Port Charlotte, Florida, is changing that for many lucky patients at Dr. Angela Boehler’s dental practice, Simply Smiles. Sancho is a nine-year-old Chihuahua. He has such a calming presence that crying children and trembling adults—and even confirmed dentophobes—relax into a state of near bliss when holding him in their lap. All their fears melt away and their dental procedures become a breeze. “It’s almost like giving them a sedative,” says Dr. Angela.

When Sancho was five months old, Dr. Angela walked into a pet store, not looking for a puppy, but to purchase dog food. She locked eyes with Sancho, and fell in love immediately. He stared at her with intelligent eyes and pulled her in like a tractor beam. Dr. Angela couldn’t stand the thought of this adorable puppy spending one more day on display for purchase. He deserved much more than that, and today his life would change. She paid $500 for him, and walked out with the love of her life. From that moment, Sancho went everywhere with her and proved himself to be the smartest dog she has ever had. And the calmest, must trusting, and most bonded to her as well. He went to her dental practice with her and spent the day in her private office, where she sat at her desk between patients. One day, when Sancho was about nine months old, Dr. Angela had a very nervous patient. The woman was not sure she could go through with her 24 | coastalcaninemag.com | Summer 2017
scheduled treatment. An idea dawned on Dr. Angela. “Do you like dogs?” she asked. The answer was “yes.” Dr. Angela brought Sancho out and put him in the patient’s lap. Holding and petting Sancho made a 1,000 percent difference. The patient was instantly calm and able to have her dental work done. And Sancho was calm as well. The sound of the dental equipment, the scraping, and the overhead light did not phase him one bit. Now, nine years later, Sancho has helped hundreds of patients through their dental procedures. He has his own business cards, and his title is Dental Anxiety Therapist. And of course he gets paid—in chicken treats. There is a code, “DDOGG,” on the appointment schedule, which means Sancho has been requested. Sancho loves going to work. When they get to the office he greets each staff member, greets the patients in the reception area, and then waits in

One of his most memorable successes was a patient who had not seen a dentist in 40 years. She was in excruciating pain because her teeth and gums were so bad. She had made appointments before but backed out of them. She even made it into the chair once, but would have a panic attack if Dr. Angela picked up a dental instrument. They didn’t get very far.

Finally, once again in the chair, she agreed to hold Sancho on her lap, and she was okay for the first time. She was able to have a root canal and extraction and complete the entire gamut of her treatment because of Sancho. It was like she had taken valium. When not working, Sancho shares his life with Pippa, another Chihuahua mix, two kitties, two ferrets and two large lizards. With all the comforting Sancho does for others, is there anything that frightens him? “Just thunder,” says Dr. Angela. “That is his one weakness. Oh, and the dishwasher. He isn’t fond of the dishwasher either.”

Lauren Weisenthal and her husband, Brian, were living the dream. They had quit their tech jobs, sold their apartment, and, with their Siamese cat, were sailing their small boat from New York City, down the East Coast, through the Bahamas, and all around the Caribbean. Little did they know when they pulled into port at Sint Maarten that their lives would change forever . . . as would the lives of two island dogs they would meet there.
“The canines are curious about everything. They are dedicated beachcombers, adventurous climbers and social divas.” Lauren and Brian had been on this adventure of a lifetime for a year and a half when they hauled out at Sint Maarten to do some long overdue projects on their boat. Sint Maarten is a tiny island country, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, on the southern part of (French) Saint Martin in the Caribbean. It was here, while living on the hard ground at a dusty boatyard, that a pair of homeless dogs, brother and sister, living just beyond the yard fence, stole the hearts of the nomadic couple. The duo became the highlight of Lauren and Brian’s days on the island. When they walked down the road to town, the young dogs would come crashing through bushes or crawl out from under parked cars to lick the couple copiously, their entire tail ends wagging madly, and often roll over submissively for a good belly rubbing. Soon, the dogs began following them down the road. They would wait patiently outside the marine supply store while the humans made their purchases, and then trail them back up the road again. Lauren and Brian started calling the dogs, Cole and Marigot, after bays on the island. Before long, the dogs started coming back to the boat with them in the evenings. There, Cole and Marigot were placed in duffel bags and hoisted up the ladder so that they could pass out in the safety of the boat’s cockpit. It was official—Lauren and Brian were head over heels in love! And now, they had a huge dilemma as well.

The work in the boatyard was nearly finished, and after five weeks, it was almost time to get the boat back on the water. “What about the dogs?” Lauren lamented again one evening over drinks; it was a conversation that she and Brian had had many times before. As “splash time” drew near, the couple couldn’t imagine leaving Cole and Marigot behind; they were also overwhelmed with doubt. Two dogs on a small sailboat? With a cranky Siamese cat? Do dogs get seasick? Would they be quarantined in the countries the couple were visiting? How will the dogs get in and out of the dinghy? And where will they pee while at sea??? Ultimately, motivated by great love, Lauren and Brian courageously committed to doing whatever it would take to bring the dogs on board, and into their lives for keeps. The good news was that adoption proceedings moved quickly thanks to Animal Defenders of Sint Maarten. This animal welfare agency, staffed by volunteers, had been feeding Cole and Marigot since they were puppies. It had also taken care of all their medical needs. “There were

cc | feature lots of tears, though,” remembers Lauren. The dogs had become “fan favorites” of the organization. The following day, the new family was in the office of the local vet getting microchips, rabies shots, and clearance papers for international travel. The notso-good news came at the end of the office visit when the vet gravely delivered some dreaded news: like so many other dogs and cats in the Caribbean, Cole and Marigot had heartworm, a debilitating and eventually fatal parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. Although treating heartworm is possible, it is a long and deliberate process. In spite of this setback, the pack pushed forward. There was some work to be done with the island dogs. Lauren and Brian did lots of basic dog training such as walking on a leash and practicing commands such as “leave it” and “come,” as well as boat-specific dog training to keep Cole and Marigot safe and comfortable there. Whenever the pups were asked to do something new like sailing in bumpy seas, peeing on the designated AstroTurf® spot, or getting in and out of the dinghy to go ashore, Lauren worried that it would be too much for them to handle. Each time, the canines astounded her with their willingness to learn (and to receive some of the boiled chicken treat she keeps in her pocket!). Lauren marvels at how fast Cole and Marigot have taken to the routine of life on a boat at sea. Finding a new vet in every port, the foursome has continued exploring the islands of the Caribbean. From Sint Maarten, they went to the U.S. Virgin Islands. There, Cole and Marigot had some reluctant swimming lessons and enjoyed easy, slow hikes (because of heartworm) around the pristine Virgin Islands National Park. Next, the sloop troupe made their way to the Spanish Virgin Islands and then on to Puerto Rico. Lauren and Brian look forward to sharing their favorite spots in the Bahamas once Cole and Marigot have fully recovered from the heartworm. Cole and Marigot are not the only beneficiaries here, of course. For their part, Lauren and Brian receive a limitless supply of unconditional love, and the pups have changed the way the humans experience the new places that they visit in their travels. The canines are curious about everything. They are dedicated beachcombers, adventurous climbers, and social divas. Traveling with Cole and Marigot forces Lauren and Brian to pay more attention and tune into things that they may have otherwise missed. They find themselves getting more involved and being more present everywhere they go. “Important reminders for two people who have been living like nomads for almost two years,” Lauren says, “I can’t remember what adventuring felt like without them!” Currently, the Nightingale Tune is harbored in Puerto Rico. The crew has taken an apartment in colorful old San Juan to weather out hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to November 30, and to really focus on the heartworm treatment for the dogs. “Don’t neglect your dog’s monthly heartworm prevention,” Lauren advises readers. “It’s so important. The treatment [for heartworm] is hard and it is not cheap. We were fortunate that we had money in our budget for it.”

As for the Siamese cat, Nico, “He is not too fond of the dogs,” Lauren confesses. But now, in a city of cats (San Juan) with felines frequenting every foot of open space, the young dogs are learning yet another set of social skills. Come fall, the adventuresome lot will set sail once again. They will most likely cruise around the Bahamas before setting their sites on the return stateside. When I asked Lauren where she thought they might land, she said, “I’m not sure, but Brian and I have always dreamed about going to California

Ozzy Johnson The Fastest Tightrope-Walking Dog Traversing a 3/4” wide x 12’ long rope in 18.22 seconds, Ozzy, a Border Collie/Kelpie mix is recognized for the fastest “crossing of a tightrope by a dog.” Hailing from Norwich, England, four-and-a-half year old Ozzy was trained by his 51-year-old carpenter dad, Nick Johnson. Nick, a self-taught trainer, says the key to effective training is “relationship building and really making an effort to understand how your dog ticks.” Nick adds, “We also only practice when he is in the mood, after he has done all his important dog stuff, like sniffing around and meeting other dogs.”

Otto, the Bulldog Longest Human Tunnel on a Skateboard During a 2015 Guinness World Records event, Otto coasted through the legs of 30 volunteers on a sloped sidewalk in El Malecon Park in Lima, Peru, setting a world record for “longest human tunnel traveled through by a skateboarding dog.” Otto’s parents, Luciana Viale and Robert Rickards, were inspired to train Otto after watching videos of the famous skateboarding dog Tillman. Mia Lucido The Most Biscuits Balanced Performing a kind of dog-biscuit JengaŽ that would be difficult to do on any flat surface, John Lucido and his Australian Shepherd Mia, thanks to patience and perseverance, hold the world record for biscuit balancing. After many attempts, the Pacific Grove dog trainer managed to stack a world record 55 biscuits, balanced between his ever-patient and lovingly disciplined Mia’s, nose and forehead. Hero, the Collie Most Cones Weaved Walking on Front Paws Only Hero the Super Collie knows over 600 behaviors! This five-year-old Canadian pooch is known for his incredible canine freestyle routines. Walking on his front paws took him over three years to master, but now he is one of the best in the world! One of his talents is doing a walking paw stand while weaving through a set of cones. His current record is 10! He also has performed the most tricks in 60 seconds—a mind-boggling 72. Arrow, the German Shepherd The First Skydiving, Antipoaching Dog The war against poaching can now be taken to a whole new level thanks to Arrow the German Shepherd. In December 2016, Arrow was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's first skydiving, antipoaching dog. Performing his first skydive in September 2016 at two years old, Arrow and his handler, Henry Holsthyzen, have lead the way in anti-poaching efforts. Deployed by helicopter, they can descend from the sky into remote areas that are difficult to reach by vehicle or on foot. This allows for a quick response to capture poachers. Arrow can track and apprehend poachers before their scents have diminished or they are able to escape across borders.

Tillman / Jumpy Fastest Dogs on a Skateboard Two incredible multi-talented dogs are virtually tied for this record. The original speed record was achieved by the famous English Bulldog, Tillman, during the 2009 X Games in Los Angeles, California. Tillman completed the 100-meter (328’) course in a remarkable time of 19.678 seconds. Sadly, Tillman passed away in 2015 but will live on in the memories of the

Midge, the Police Dog The Smallest Canine Crime Fighter Traditionally, police dogs are large German Shepherds. As the world’s smallest police dog, Midge proves you don’t have to be the biggest kid on the block to do good things. First recruited as a three-month-old puppy, Midge became a full-fledged, certified drug-detection dog by the time she was one year old. Scoring 100% on her test, Midge was partnered with her Dan McClellan, the Geauga County Sheriff in Ohio, who happens to be her dad. Taking her work seriously, Midge regularly accompanies the sheriff on sweeps and has been responsible for big drug busts in the county. Although 11 years old now, Midge remains healthy and active, and recently was re-certified. McClelland, along with Midge, will retire this year. Mike and Bixby Farthest Distance Traveled on an Electric Assist Bike After traveling the United States for four years promoting shelter awareness and pet adoption, Mike Minnick and his rescued Border Collie mix, Bixby, ended their current tour at the Golden Gate Bridge on July 9th of this year. It wrapped up their circular tour of over 15,000 miles and gives them the world record for the longest distance traveled on an electric-assist bike. Mike and Bixby’s previous bike was also a cargo bike but without the electric-assist motor. Mike’s life changed forever after adopting Bixby. STORIE / VHOEBE Longest Dock-Diving Jumps The jump distance for a dock-diving jump is measured, by most organizations, from the end of the dock to the point at which the base of the dog’s tail (where the tail meets the body) breaks the water’s surface. Others measure the distance to the point the jumper’s nose reaches when the dog first enters the water. Storie, a Labrador Retriever, holds the current North American Diving Dogs record for a Dock Diving Distance Jump. After driving 14 1/2 hours with her dad, JD McKnight, to the AKC National Championships in Orlando, Florida, Storie raced 35’ down the launching dock, hurling herself across the pool after her toy. The distance, judged by where the base of her tail entered the water, was 30’ 7” and set the current North American Diving Dogs distance jump record.

A Magical Friendship By Carie Broecker
In 2006, a remarkable thing happened. Duggie, a bottle nosed dolphin, befriended a happy-go-lucky Labrador named Ben. Duggie had recently experienced a loss. Her mate had died and washed up on the short of Tory Island, near Donegal, Ireland. Dolphins mate for life, and Duggie grieved for his mate. He didn’t want to leave the harbor which became her grave, so he stayed. And over the course of ten years, he made friends. He greeted tourists in the harbor as they waited for the ferry. The whole town and its visitors became enamored with gentle Duggie, but one town member became his best friend and that was Ben, the Labrador. Ben’s guardian owned a hotel on the harbor, and every day, Ben would run down to the harbor, down the cement stairway, and plunge into the water to frolic with his friend, the dolphin. They would swim together around and around for up to three hours every day. Duggie often on his back, swimming under Ben, blowing bubbles and Ben swimming in circles to stay with Duggie, both of them brushing up against each other as often as they could. Both smiling, content, in the moment, enjoying their interspecies relationship. It was obvious their swims were the highlight of both of their days. Sometimes Ben was so exhausted after his long swims with Duggie, that the dolphin would nudge him along and hold him up with his nose to help him back to shore. Occasionally, a pod of dolphins would swim past the harbor and Duggie would go out after them, swim with them for a while, but he always came back to his cove, to be with the town’s folk, the tourists, and Ben. Duggie and Ben were caught on video several times over the years and although Ben has since passed away, and Duggie did leave the cove, their friendship and their swims live on, on the internet, for all to enjoy. Some particularly great footage was taken of them for NatGeo Wild and can be seen on their website.

a lover of all animals since she was old enough to crawl. As a child, she would bring home kittens, lizards, birds, dogs, and any living creature in need, and she would nurse them back to health. She grew up in Central America, and the semiferal animals that were everywhere tugged at her heart. When she came to the United States to go to college and began volunteering in animal shelters in rural parts of the United States, she found that the conditions were no better than what she had witnessed in Central America. In rural Chico, California, there were many properties with no fencing, and many animals were not altered and were allowed to roam. Many were neglected and abandoned. Twenty-two years ago Cheri settled in San Luis Obispo County and spent much of her time volunteering at the local humane society. At that time, they had one of the highest euthanasia rates of dogs and cats in the state. Over the years, thanks to Cheri and a band of dedicated animal lovers, that has changed. San Luis Obispo County now has one of the lowest euthanasia rates in the state.

Just as she did when she was a child, Cheri could not pass up a dog in need. The dogs without advocates were the ones she was drawn to. Dogs with no one looking for them, dogs who were routinely passed up for adoption, dogs whose guardians had passed away, dogs with disabilities, senior dogs, and dogs with behavior issues that no one wanted to deal with. She was rescuing full time, unpaid. And she did catering jobs to pay her bills. She was living hand to mouth—always putting the dogs first, but saving what she could to build a future for her helping dogs. Eventually she was able to scrape together enough money to purchase 20 acres in San Luis Obispo County to start her own nonprofit shelter/sanctuary called Second Chance at Love Humane Society. Today, Cheri and a core group of only eight volunteers rescue dogs in the most need from the San Luis Obispo Shelter. They also rescue dogs from some of the shelters in Southern California that have the highest need, especially the Downey and Bakersfield shelters. The dogs in the most need are the dogs who do not pass their temperament evaluations and won’t be put up for adoption. These are the dogs Cheri is focusing on now. That wasn’t always the case. In the early years, Cheri had no training or behavior-modification skills. When she first started Second Chance at Love, she ended up with a shelter full of “unadoptable” dogs. These were dogs who were aggressive with people, with other dogs, or with both—and she couldn’t get them adopted.

That all changed when she found out about a trainer in Los Angeles who was having success changing the behavior of aggressive dogs. He spoke little English at the time. His name was Cesar Millan. Cheri gave him a call, and because she was fluent in Spanish, they were able to communicate well and hit it off right away. At the time Cesar had 40 dogs he was working
with, but he didn’t have an adequate place in Los Angeles to exercise them. Cheri invited him to bring his wife and the dogs and come to her 20acre property. They showed up with 40 dogs in two vans and stayed for a week. They taught Cheri about the importance of exercising the dogs, about pack mentality, about staying calm, and about being

cc | for the dogs an assertive leader. She also learned that a calm, balanced pack is the best cure for an unbalanced dog. The dogs learn from each other. Cesar, his family, and his dogs came to stay with Cheri for a week every month. This was long before Cesar became known as the National Geographic Channel’s Dog Whisperer. What Cheri learned with Cesar turned everything around for her, her dogs, and her shelter. It was also the beginning of a friendship that continues to this day.
The minds and behaviors of the balanced dogs influence the state of mind of the new dog. Her training protocol also typically involves a daily sixto eight-mile pack walk. Cheri begin applying the philosophies and techniques she was learning, and the dogs in her shelter became much more adoptable. She has adopted out over 5,000 dogs in the past 20 years, and all with the offer to provide free behavior consultations for life. Cheri now runs her own training center, as well as her shelter. For many of the dogs and guardians who go see Cheri, their issues can be turned around in just one session. Some need more time and some need board and train. During board and train, Cheri integrates the dog in with her calm, balanced pack of 10 dogs.
