appy New Year 2020! Welcome to the future. And in this issue, welcome back to the past with our 1950s-themed issue featuring the “first lady” of rock ‘n’ roll, Priscilla Presley.
We are very grateful to Priscilla for being gracious enough to speak with writer Marion Zola in an exclusive interview for this issue. Priscilla, a lifelong animal lover and avid animal advocate, talks about her life with dogs. The interview inspired other articles in this issue, including a retro road trip on Route 66 with travel writer Belinda Jones; an article about Buddy Mercury, the piano-playing, singing Beagle; and a photo shoot with a classic-car backdrop to help get several special pups adopted. Priscilla’s interview also led to the rescue and rehoming of a gentle Labrador in need named Rocky. Also included in this issue are beautiful photos of Dancers & Dogs taken by a very talented husband and wife photographer team. Rocky is a big, loveable black Labrador Retriever mix. He is the quintessential “gentle giant.” Rocky had a family, but they made the decision to relocate to Israel for a job opportunity. They lived in Los Angeles and didn’t think it was practical to take Rocky on the long flight. Instead, they had made up their minds to surrender him to a shelter. At 10 years old and 120 pounds, his chances of getting adopted weren’t great. Lucky for Rocky, one of his guardians worked with a woman named Ivy. Ivy is a dog-lover and she is the cousin of Priscilla Presley, an avid animal-lover, advocate, and rescuer. Ivy let Priscilla know about Rocky’s plight and asked if she had any ideas of how to help him. People are often asking Priscilla for help with dogs because they know she has a heart of gold and will do anything to help an animal in need. The same day Priscilla was searching for help for Rocky, she was being interviewed by Marion Zola for an article in Coastal Canine. Toward the end of the interview, Priscilla asked Marion if she knew anyone who might want to adopt a lovely senior black Lab.

Being a volunteer with Peace of Mind Dog Rescue (POMDR), Marion immediately thought that POMDR might be able to help Rocky. She gave Priscilla my cell number since I’m the executive director for POMDR. POMDR focuses on taking in senior dogs and finding them new loving homes. Priscilla called me and told me Rocky’s story. She was so worried about what would happen to him if he went to a shelter. My husband, Scott, and I agreed to foster Rocky, and Marion arranged for a friend of hers to bring him to us in Pacific Grove. Rocky arrived at about 5 p.m. He was a big boy! At 120 pounds, he was about 30 pounds overweight. We introduced him to our 17-yearold Shih Tzu and 12-year-old Miniature Pinscher mix and they got along perfectly despite the size difference. Rocky has a pretty happy-golucky attitude and didn’t seem at all stressed by his big adventure and multiple handoffs from person to person. The next day, I took Rocky to our veterinarian for the wellness exam POMDR performs on all new dogs. Sadly, on exam, our vet felt what seemed to be a large mass on his liver. She did an ultrasound and confirmed her suspicion. Our next stop was the emergency and specialty clinic in Santa Cruz for further testing. Once again, tests confirmed that Rocky had a mass on his liver and would need emergency surgery to have it removed. The surgery, with the rescue discount, was going to be $4,500. Without the surgery, the mass could burst at any time and Rocky could die. We posted Rocky’s story on Facebook and were able to raise half the funds needed. Marion, Priscilla, and Ivy also made donations toward the surgery, and Priscilla reached out to friends to contribute as well. At the end of the day, we had all the funds we needed for Rocky’s surgery. 16 | coastalcaninemag.com | Winter 2020
They were right! Rocky is the perfect playmate for their two young children, Grant (4 years old) and Cole (1 year old). Rocky’s favorite place to hang out is under Cole’s chair waiting for crumbs to fall. And Cole’s favorite place to be is curled up with Rocky for a nap. The next obstacle was that after his surgery, Rocky would not be able to do the flight of stairs up to our front door. POMDR foster mom, Lisa Soon, volunteered to see Rocky through his recovery after surgery. The surgery was successful! And we

Dancers and Dogs By Dina Eastwood
One pliés, the other squats. One leaps, the other jumps. Through the photographs of Kelly Pratt Kreidich and Ian Kreidich, dancers and dogs move fluidly in the frame. Posing the ballerinas with fourlegged friends was a quirky idea that Kelly turned into a reality, resulting in a website, a calendar, a social media identity, and now a coffee-table book called Dancers and Dogs. The photos capture a dance that’s beautiful, even though it’s static. Maybe the port de bras is more of a “port de paw,” but it’s all equally gorgeous thanks to the work of these Missouri-based professional photographers who’ve assembled a unique corps de ballet.

It’s about being in the moment and experiencing joy

“We are the photographers for the St. Louis Ballet,” explains Kelly, half of the Kreidich team. “We were trying to think of different things to do for fun, and I thought ‘Hey, let’s combine the lines of the dancers with different types of dogs.’” The first shoot was a breeze. “We kept everything simple. It was with a dancer named Erica and Baxter the Bulldog. It went over very well.” That was in 2017, and it was so popular the calendar was created. In 2018, the Kreidichs added a video, and that’s when everything changed. “It went viral. It went across the world on its own. So, in 2019 we started a Kickstarter campaign to make a book.” Their fundraising complete, they went on the road, shooting pups in St. Louis, New York (including the American Ballet Theatre there), Los Angeles, Orlando, Denver, Charlotte, Atlanta, and San Diego. They now have a huge social media following, including well over one hundred thousand fans on Instagram alone. In what Kreidich calls “a balance of fun and creating new avenues” for their work, the duo has encountered dozens of fantastic dogs and skilled dancers. She says it’s even been entertaining when it’s challenging. “During the hardest shoot we’ve ever had, Ian injured his finger right before we started, then the power went out, and it was one of those shoots where we only had one day in Atlanta, and we’re like, ‘The show must go on.’” Other than that, no shoot has gone, uh, to the dogs, but Kelly chuckles when she says many
of the pups who are cast are said by their owners to be far better trained than they actually are. No matter a dog’s level of knowing commands, they’re all great to work with. “Collies and the like tend to be the most trained—they are probably the easiest, but no single breed stands out. A Basset Hound named Poppy was amazing. We had Red, the Pit Bull. His mom is a trainer and he could do many things that ‘Pits’ are not trained to do.” The original goal of “100 dancers, 100 dogs,” has been surpassed. The Kreidichs’ beautiful hardback was released in November of 2019. A portion of the proceeds goes straight to Stray Rescue of St. Louis. The Kreidichs support dog adoption with another creative venture called “The Muttcracker.” Every year before Christmas, dancers from the St. Louis Ballet don their Nutcracker costumes and pose with dogs who need homes. By the end of the 2019 campaign, all but one dog had been adopted. The treat-and-tutu-laden photography sessions live on. The Kreidichs plan to continue shooting around the U.S., focusing on Southern California soon, and possibly with dancers who specialize in genres other than ballet. “Ever since I was a little girl, stray animals came up to me—dogs, cats, bunnies. I believe in all life, even insects who get trapped in our homes. They don’t want to be there any more than we want them there. I try to get them out without killing them. No, I’m not crazy. Compassionate, yes.”
It all began when she was six. “My father didn’t really like dogs inside, so when I would find a lost or stray dog, I would keep her or him in my room or in my closet until he left early for work. Then I’d let the dog out. My mother was my partner in crime, as she loved animals as well. My father, who was in the military, traveled a lot, so he never

discovered that we would let the dogs inside when he was gone.” I asked how she acquired the six dogs she had in recent years. “Once, when my black Lab got out of my property and was nowhere to be seen, I went to the shelters looking for him. There, I saw a Boston Terrier who was scheduled to be euthanized. Of course I had to take him, and fell in love with the breed. It actually happens with every breed I have. Each one has such endearing characteristics.” (She did find her black Lab thankfully, though not in the shelter.) The second Boston Terrier was from Mississippi. “My friend who usually rescues horses called me about ‘the worst animal-hoarding case ever in the state of Mississippi.’ One of the dogs she saved from there was a little female Boston Terrier. She knew I was fond of the breed and asked me if I would take her. And, of course, I did. I asked her how many dogs were left that she couldn’t place. She said there was only one dog left, a Pit Bull.” She points to Boz, standing near her. “He was only nine months old and I took him sight unseen. I know and have heard of stories about Pitties, but many of my friends have them and they are remarkable dogs. I was willing to give him a chance. He’s seven now and a very sweet boy. the owners, whom I knew, were leaving the state. I didn’t want him to go to a shelter, so I took him too. The three English Bulldogs I volunteered to take from my daughter, when she decided to move to London. I asked her what she was going to do with her dogs. She looked at me and said . . . ‘YOU!’ We both started laughing. The Bulldogs have now all passed away.” I wondered where Ridley, who now approached

holding his tennis ball, came from. “My gardener was telling my housekeeper that he was concerned about this puppy who lived in an apartment with two Pit Bulls that were trained to be guard dogs. The caretaker of the puppy wanted to find a home for him. The Terrier was only three months old. I thought I’d find a home for him but ended up loving him too much to give him away. These animals are truly gifts for us. I’m in definite communication with them.

“I believe in adopting dogs who don’t have a home or finding homes for dogs whose owners can no longer care for them. There are so many dogs in shelters or even on the streets who desperately need a home. Many of them were either abused, abandoned, or lost. There are so many dogs available, I encourage people to go first to a shelter. If they keep looking there, they will find one to love and the dog will give it back. “Whenever I go out with my dogs I have someone with me so that I don’t have to leave them alone in the car.

When I see someone has left his dog in the car with the windows not open enough, I put a sign on the car that I’ve had made up. It says ‘Please don’t leave your dog alone in an empty car. Make sure your windows are down part way if you have to leave them and don’t take them out when it’s hot.’” She definitely does not believe dogs should be left outside a home, as some people do day and night. “They are social creatures and want to be with people. They are also afraid in the night.” Priscilla’s lucky dogs are surely looked after; they are part of the family. Before leaving I ask about other animals that have been in her life. “I’m also very fond of horses. Elvis gifted me one Christmas a four-year-old quarter horse, named Domino. I rode him nearly every day. Unfortunately, he passed away from torsion. By the way, do you know anyone who might be interested in a nine-year-old black Lab?” she asks me. “His owners are moving out of the country and won’t be able to take him because they’ll be at work and school for too many hours.” I thought about Lab Rescue but hoped a few phone calls might

locate someone who was ready to adopt now. With only two days, I could not find the right person until the always-reliable Peace of Mind Dog Rescue stepped in. The Lab was driven two days later to the Monterey Peninsula to Peace of Mind, and then on to a wonderful foster home. He needed expensive surgery for a mass on his spleen, which was done pronto, and turned out to be benign. He is supersweet and now available for adoption for anyone who wants a 24-hour a day lover. If Priscilla hadn’t asked, I don’t know where he might have ended up.

When Laurie and Glen left their house to attend a local adoption event three years ago, they had no idea how their decision wou ld end up changing their life, and the lives of so many others. “It was the first day we went out with the intention of adopting a dog, and he was literally the first dog we saw,” says Laurie. “He was a little pathetic and definitely in need of love. He was really frail. He had been picked up as a stray, and the rescue organization had found that he was ‘heart worm positive’.” “We were hestitant. We wanted to bring him home, but we were a little scared because we didn’t really know ‘heart worm positive’ would mean for him,” she explained. After conferring with some friends, they decided to give him a chance.
a Basset t Hound/Beagle mix (which she fondly refers to as a “Bagel”), was determined to get loose so he could explore their neighborhood. “We just couldn’t get him to not run away. That nose just takes him where he wants to go, and it was so upsetting. Every thing we would do to keep him in the yard, he would outsmart us. We have a fenced yard but he just kept finding a way and it felt like nothing was working.” Disheartened and distraught, Laurie and Glen made the difficult decision to return Buddy to the rescue group. They didn’t think they could keep him safe.
But it wasn’t an easy transition. Buddy,

We feel he plays his tunes not only for the love of music, and his family but as a call to action for others to consider rescuing an animal. There are so many out there in need of a good, loving and happy home.

neighbors so it was a little awkward to go up to their door, but I wanted to know if they were getting rid of it. They said we could have it, but we had to come get it.” “I played as a kid so I thought if maybe there was a piano in the house I’d get back into it. I never really have, but the piano has gone to good use. So basically Buddy is a rescue and so is his piano!” Laurie says laughingly. Buddy’s crooning started shortly after his adoption.
“I cried the whole night after we dropped him off, and by the morning I had changed my mind. We were determined to figure it out,” recalls Laurie, “Any and every tiny little hole had to get dug up and blocked with cinder blocks and more dirt… but it did the trick!” Buddy had found his forever home. It was shortly thereafter that a second “rescue” came into their life. While Laurie was walking in her neighborhood one morning, she came across a well-loved piano that had been pushed to the curbside. After some hesitation, she approached the door to ask if she could have it. “I didn’t even really know these

“We realized Buddy would howl along to music. If there was something playing on TV and it was just the right song and he enjoyed it, he’d howl along. If I played around on the piano, he’d start howling along,” says Laurie. “My husband is a drummer and we have a lot of musicians in and out of the house, and he had the bright idea to have Buddy hit the keys himself,” he says. “So he’d offer him a treat for putting his paw on a key.” Buddy knew that playing a key with his paw meant he got a reward… but the day he howled along to the tune, no one was even in the room with him. “Glen heard him playing keys and howling along from the other room, and he dove for his phone because he thought no one would believe him if he didn’t record it!” says Laurie. “I posted the video of him playing piano to my personal social media account for fun, and my 44 | coastalcaninemag.com | Winter 2020
friends and family were going nuts over it! They kept asking if we could please make it “shareable” so we did,” explains Laurie. “That video ended up getting over 15 million views.” They realized fairly quickly that Buddy had a very special talent that needed to be shared with the world. “Random people were sending me friend requests from all over the place after watching his video, and we thought we needed to open a page just for Buddy Mercury.” (Buddy is nicknamed after Freddie Mercury, the late lead singer and piano player of the legendary rock band Queen). Fast-forward three years and Buddy Mercury now has 80,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel and was recently awarded “Most Talented Pet of the Year” for 2019 on Good Morning America. He has fans across the globe.

Buddy can often be seen crooning along with his favorite sidekick, Laurie and Glen’s two-year-old daughter, who is affectionately nicknamed “Little Sis” on the channel. “She’s the perfect age for wanting to play dress up, so a lot of people really love the videos of her dressed up as a little chicken or something like that, and his fans like to call her his ‘back up dancer.’”
And Buddy Mercury is doing just that. A portion of the merchandise sales from his website are donated back to animal rescue organizations, and he is a huge advocate for adopting your next pet. He recently released a 2020 calendar to raise funds for twelve different rescue organizations that are near and dear to his heart.
They are heart-warming together and it’s impossible not to smile while watching them “perform.”
Buddy also has a debut album, Buddy Mercury Sings the Blues, that is available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify! 50% of album proceeds are donated directly to shelters that help save animals!

RETRO-ROAD TRIP By Belinda Jones
Nothing says iconic U.S. road trip like Route 66! But just how different would the journey be if you and your canine copilot had cruised from California to Graceland back in Elvis’s heyday? The King bought his castle in 1957 (for just over $100,000), so we’ve asked road-trip queen Belinda Jones to imagine making the 1,800-mile drive with her hound dog Bodie in the very year Elvis topped the charts with All Shook Up, Teddy Bear, and Jailhouse Rock…

Los Angeles. Our starting point is the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue. A sky-blue ‘57 Chevy Bel Air convertible is revving up with a full tank of gas—at just 28 cents a gallon! Bodie and I are donning matching silk scarves so they can ripple in the breeze, extending as far back as the silver tail fins. And we’re off!
en route. Wherever we stay, Bodie will snooze cozily on his red tartan plaid Pendleton blanket, presented in a handy carry-case kit known as a Robe-in-a-Bag. And while we may think dog outfits and accessories are a new fad, they had plenty of options for rainwear, booties, and Simplicity patterns for stylish jackets back in the day!
We considered adding a little teardrop trailer or even a full-blown Airstream (did you know that since their inception in 1936, over 70 percent of these striking aluminum trailers are still cruising American highways in 2020?), but then we thought we’d like to check out some of the kitschy motels
Instead of a takeout latte with my name misspelled on the paper cup, I have a reusable Thermos® flask and a bag of Dunkin’ Donuts, though I’m trying not to get sugar on my kid-leather driving gloves. Bodie will be enjoying a can of Friskies or Purina Dog Chow (introduced in 1957 and soon the market leader), plus Ken-L dog treats. (Though Milk-Bones are still going strong nearly 50 years after they were first launched under the name Maltoids in 1908!) With one road extending all the way to Chicago, Illinois, we don’t worry about following a map, let alone wishing that GPS had been invented. However, if you are traveling in 2020, you’ll find much of the original Route 66 has been replaced by U.S. Highway 40, so you’ll need an online resource like historic66.com's turn-by-turn guide to keep you close to the authentic path. The website also highlights classic roadside attractions like the Roy’s Motel Cafe sign in Amboy, as seen in Kalifornia with Brad Pitt. Bodie and I stop to film a few minutes

with a Canon 8mm Cine camera (as opposed to choosing the video option on an iPhone 11), but we’re keen to cross into Arizona and get to the Hackberry General Store, set halfway between Kingman and Peach Springs. Aptly known as the “mother lode of Mother Road memorabilia” the former gas station stop is jammed with curiosities from the fifties and sixties. Back in the day, they offered classic diner fare such as warm apple pie and hot dogs— with absolutely nothing marked gluten-free or vegan. Of course actual dogs were not allowed in diners so our 1950s selves will be chowing down at drive-up restaurants with carhops setting our burgers and shakes on a window tray—an experience that can still be enjoyed in 45 states (complete with roller-skate delivery) thanks to Oklahoma-based Sonic Burger, which began trading in 1953. Three hours on from the Hackberry General Store, past Flagstaff and Winslow, we come to Holbrook's Wigwam Motel, a series of 28-foot high concrete teepees, which even today have vintage vehicles parked outside. Here you can fall asleep with your pup listening to “Mr. Sandman” (a hit in 1954 but eternally popular) for $79 with a $20 pet fee. Bodie and I opted to push on another hour to the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico, in the hope of checking in alongside movie star guests like Gregory Peck, Doris Day, Katherine Hepburn and Kirk Douglas, in town to film westerns. (In the present day, the guy on reception was kind enough to take care of Bodie while I grabbed a bite in the restaurant, where the Ronald Reagan burger comes with a side of jelly beans!)

If it were 1962, our bedtime reading would be a copy of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, relating his 10,000-mile tour around the U.S. with his beloved Standard Poodle. But as it is 1957, we are enjoying Snoopy’s antics in Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strips and watching black and white episodes of Lassie or Rin Tin Tin as they vie to be TV’s top dog! When “Wake Up Little Susie” by The Everly Brothers comes on, you know it’s time to hit the road again. Enchanting Santa Fe was actually on Route 66 until 1937, when a bypass was created. We make the onehour diversion from Albuquerque to visit the mother of The Mother Road—the Santa Fe Trail, established in 1822. If you are visiting in 2020, you and your pet can stay right on the plaza at the historic La Fonda Hotel. Four hours later we’re in Amarillo, Texas. One highly Instagrammable stop in the present day is the Cadillac Ranch, a remote field with ten graffitied Cadillacs positioned nose down in red dirt. Just remember to bring your own can of spray paint so you can make your temporary mark . . . For dinner, return to Route 66 and attempt to devour the famous 72-oz. steak at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. This Western-style motel and restaurant first opened in 1960 and is still going strong. ($10 pet fee for your dog, and there’s even a “Horse Hotel” out back with 20 stalls.) And so we begin the last leg of our trip. At Tulsa, Oklahoma we veer away from Route 66 and set our sights on Memphis, Tennessee. (Though if you do continue
