6 August 2023 | The South Coast Insider THINGS TO DO

Shop small, shop local!

Thursday of the month at New Bedford’s AHA Nights – the August 10 theme is “Summer in the Seaport” (ahanewbedford.org)!

Food and drink

Save the date for “Brew at the Zoo” –Rhode Island’s largest beer festival on August 27 at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence – 80+ brewers, live music, 21+ only (rwpzoo.org/brew-atthe-zoo)!

Why risk your health (and sanity) at crowded malls on Black Friday? Take advantage of incredible offerings in your own neighborhood on Small Business Saturday, November 28, throughout the South Coast. Check out sbsshopri. com for shop-and-stroll events in Rhode Island. For that special gift, support local craftsmen and artists by heading over to the Waterfire Arts Center in Providence to visit the safe outdoor pop-up markets (waterfire.org/art-mart). And on First Thursdays (November 5) you can “shop and dine local” in Barrington, Bristol, and Warren (discovernewport.org).

Reserve your table early for the annual Great Community Picnic at Munro Preserve in Mattapoisett on August 3. Bring your own picnic food and the Mattapoisett Land Trust (mattlandtrust.org) and the Mattapoisett Museum (mattapoisettmuseum.org) will provide the tables, chairs, live music, tablecloths, and a beautiful location. Beer and local oysters will be on sale (givebutter.com/GCP)!

Kick-off the holiday season at Frerichs Farm in Warren with “Girls Night Out” on November 6, 7 and 8 – buy your holiday trees, greenery, and gifts there, too (frerichsfarm.com). Then mark your calendar for the Newport Block Party & Holiday Stroll at Bowen’s Wharf on November 27 – you can watch the Illuminated Boat Parade while you shop and enjoy Caribbean music (bowenswharf.com).

Head for the Mayflower Beer Garden at the Pinehills in Plymouth every Sunday and on select Mondays through October 9 – live music, food trucks, beer, and pop-up shops on the village green (mayflowerbrewing. com)!

It’s the thoughtful gifts that count

Enjoy an old-fashioned family-style clambake on August 12, sponsored by the Smith Neck Friends Meeting in South Dartmouth – buy your tickets online at smithneckclambake2023. com or call 508-971-8008/992-2758. Sign up early for the Farm to Table Dinner on August 19 at Soule Homestead in Middleborough (soulehomestead.org)!

And if you can’t find gifts for all the special people in your life, consider buying gift cards to restaurants, shops, vineyards, special event venues, local farms, e-commerce websites, or grocery stores. Use mail-order services to deliver flowers, sweets, and specialty foods yearround to someone you want to thank or to express your appreciation.

Fall in love at Faxon

Don’t miss the Cape Cod Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival in East Falmouth on August 5 (foodtruckfestivalsofamerica.com)!

If you enjoy the cuisines of Guatemala, Mexico or El Salvador, head to Riverside Park in New Bedford on Saturdays through August 25 for El Patio de Comidas de Riverside, with Latino artists, musicians, and dancers (newbedfordcreative.org)!

For those who are always hard to buy a gift for, consider signing them up for an annual subscription to a streaming service, app, podcast, premier sports/ movies/cultural channel, magazine, or newspaper. Or make a donation in their name to their favorite charity, educational institution, or cultural organization. Consider how much it would be appreciated if you upgraded an older relative’s digital capabilities with an easy-to-use smartphone, tablet, or notebook – and then helped to set up Zoom or Skype.

Sign up early for events and workshops at Blithewold Mansion and Gardens in Bristol – don’t miss

You can keep the holiday spirit alive this year, even though you may not all be together to celebrate Thanksgiving. It just takes some imagination and good cheer!

THINGS TO DO

Small town

sounds

Set on a 12-acre horse farm in Rochester, this year’s show will run from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will include an array of styles including folk, rock, Americana, pop, and country. The event draws artists from across the nation, from singer/ songwriters to full bands.

Located at 339 North Ave., the farm was the birthplace of musician and organizer Rebecca Correia . Now a resident of Nashville, Tenessee, Correia has booked performers for the show based on her vast travels as a recording artist. The concerts provide performers with a full stage and professional sound and lighting. “It’s special to be able to bring people into your own home and share this experience with them,” Correia says. “It’s helped to form me into the writer and artist that I am today.”

The event invites visitors to bring their own chairs, blankets, and food and drink for a picnic-style experience. This year’s concert will feature performers such as The Island Collective, a group of five musicians with ties to Martha’s Vineyard. In addition to Correia, the quintet features Kate Taylor, who received acclaim for her album

“Sister Kate,” Isaac Taylor, Phil DaRosa, and David Saw. The group will perform in the format of a Nashville songwriter’s round, singing tunes individually and together. The set will include the song, “Love Is Contagious,” a piece written by Correia and Kate Taylor on Red House Records, which is available on all streaming platforms.

This year will include a performance by Jeff Cohen, who is responsible for crafting hit songs for Big & Rich and Sugarland. He has also written the theme for the children’s tv show, “Paw Patrol.” The event will feature Boston solo pop artist, TWAM, with other acts to be announced. The show traditionally includes a display of vintage hot rod cars.

event,” Correia says. “We’ve grown because it’s a safe environment. It brings community together and unites people with a common interest. There’s a high standard of musicianship.”

Tickets for this year’s concert are $45 for General Admission ($50 at the door), and $75 for VIP ($100 at the door). The VIP tickets will include an appetizer and snacks. They can be purchased online at bennettfarmconcert.com.

The annual Bennett Farm concerts have been an opportunity for audiences to be introduced to artists who are in the early stages of success. Past performers have included Celisse, Javier Colon, Mieka Pauley, Kevin So, and the Adam Ezra Group.

“I’ve been very, very fortunate to be able to connect with a number of artists in my industry of entertainment and sports and beyond,” Correia says. “We’ve

showcased some extraordinary artists throughout the years.”

Correia is an established artist in her own right, with four full-length albums to her credit. In 2019 she released the record “Grown Up Games,” which was produced by five-time Grammy Award winner Keb Mo. Mo also plays and sings on the album.

Born and raised on the Rochester farm, Correia’s connection to The Island Collective comes from her aunt, Lynda Simmons, who is a resident of Edgartown. Correia began collaborating with Kate Taylor in 2019 when they met at Leiper’s Fork, Tenessee, a town just outside of Nashville.

“I have huge respect for Kate. We’re kindred spirits,” Correia says. “We have the island in common, what it means to us and gives back to us. We’re all about love and kindness to each other. I really enjoy collaborating with these artists because they feel like home to me.”

ART

al fresco

“Public art is different from the experience of being in a traditional gallery,” says Jessica Bregoli, who founded the Seaport Art Walk in 2013. “It’s free and in your face, you can’t not look at it. A lot of people who wouldn’t normally go to an art museum to look at art are seeing it. It’s big and beautiful and colorful – you may love it, you may hate it, but it stirs up new conversations.

that New Bedford is open to innovation and new visions and being imaginative in our open spaces.”

The Seaport Art Walk boasts nine works by regional artists, located in the State Pier garden beds along MacArthur Drive, from the corner of Elm Street and Route 18 to the Coast Guard Park.

Artists from around the nation and throughout the South Coast are celebrating New Bedford with a range of creativity that is enhancing the city’s cultural experience for both residents and tourists. With works displayed at the waterfront and downtown, these free exhibits are part of a growing national movement in contemporary public art. From July through October of this year, the Seaport Art Walk will mark its’ 10th year of public contributions while the Mass Design, Art & Technology Institute (DATMA) will expand to its fifth.

“In the last 10 years public art has exploded.”

“Public art is part of a national trend that is becoming more inclusive, and it’s becoming part of the fabric of the city,” says Lindsay Mis, founding Director of DATMA. “It’s pretty exciting to see public art evolve in this way. In five years, I’ve seen way more community engagement in the creation of artwork than ever before.”

“Public art is bringing vibrancy to the city’s landscape. It’s adding life and color,” says Dena Haden, Director of the Co-Creative Center in downtown and a team member of the mural initiative Superflat NB. “It’s showing

“This is a great location,” Bregoli says. “These pieces are highly visible to pedestrians and drivers, it’s near restaurants and the Sea Streak ferry. There’s tons of traffic from all walks of life whether it’s workers, drivers or tourists visiting the area.”

Self-guided tours of the Seaport Art Walk are available online at destinationnewbedford.org.

DATMA is in its second consecutive year of creating works around the theme of “Shelter.” They have tapped into the talents of three artists from across the nation to bring their skills to the city with the aim of expressing and articulating what they see in the people, history, and environment of New Bedford.

Public art is flourishing in New Bedford and it’s eliciting a wide range of reactions.

Local color

Included in the DATMA works are “Threshold,” a piece by New York artist Mark Reigelman, “Our Woven Story,” by Chicago artist Maxwell Emcays, and “Community Tides” by Boston artist Silvia Lopez-Chavez.

“Threshold” is located in Custom House Square in downtown. Inspired by the Religious Society of Friends and the historical role the city played in the Abolition movement, this 17-foot-high piece features two towering open doors and is constructed largely of steel and wood.

“Our Woven Story” is located at the intersection of Route 18 and Union Street, and it explores the role of textiles in New Bedford’s past and present. The work is comprised of more than 300 pieces of recycled textiles collected from among the New Bedford community.

“Community Tides” is a mural located on the exterior wall of the Northern Pelagic Group alongside Route 18 on the west side of the New BedfordFairhaven Bridge. With assistance in its’ creation by students from New Bedford High School, the mural is 223 feet in length and 10 feet high. It is a colorful and dynamic portrayal of the New Bedford community, its diverse economy, and the fishing industry.

“It’s important for art to speak about a certain time and place, to relate to where the artwork is being installed,” Mis says. “It’s like a photograph, it’s a moment in time. And for an artist to interpret the world around them and

what might be happening in that area, it becomes a landmark – something that can represent a place.

“All objects in our world have a story in one way or another, you either connect with something or you don’t. You may connect with something that makes you think differently and gets you excited. My favorite comments come from people who are not coming at it from an artistic lens.”

“A lot of contemporary public art reflects society as it is now,” Bregoli says. “It’s a very different experience than looking at Renoirs and Monets in a museum.”

And DATMA’s 2023 exhibits include an outdoor display of regional artists called “Open Studios On the Sidewalk.” Located along the waterfront at Tonnessen Park by the entrance of the Sea Streak ferry, the gallery boasts the work of 11 artists from local towns such as New Bedford, Wareham, Fall River, and Brockton. The works include textiles, painting, photography, and mixedmedia. The display was installed by students from GNB Voc Tech High School.

Community input

“Public art inspires the whole gamut of reactions, you may really love one piece and react negatively to another,” says Haden, who has two photographs as part of the Open Studios exhibit. “Public art inspires reflection and conversations, and I think that’s a good thing.”

A new dimension of the Seaport Art Walk is the Groundwork Gallery, which is making its debut this year. Located on the first floor of the Quest Center at 1213 Pleasant Street, the gallery is showcasing the work of more than a dozen local artists through October. The featured artists were either previously displayed at the Art Walk or had applied to be a part of it.

In addition to providing public art, DATMA is also offering educational programming.

From August 8 through October 8, the New Bedford Art Museum will present “Under the Sheltering Sky.” Located at 608 Pleasant Street in downtown, the show will feature prints from the New Bedford Free Public Library – a first edition set of John J. Audubon’s “Birds of America” and works by Brooklyn-based artist Adrian Brandon. The prints highlight birds in their nests and natural habitats, many of which have never been previously exhibited.

On August 9 and 10, UMass Dartmouth’s Ceramic facilities in downtown New Bedford will present the workshop “Breaking Rules to Help Humanity – Exploring the Possibilities of 3D Printing.”

On August 20, from noon to 3 p.m., there will be a free tour, “Open House at the Mansions,” which will explore two of New Bedford’s most historic properties, the James Arnold House at 427 County Street and the Rotch Jones Duff House & Garden Museum at 396 County Street. In addition to the tours, the day will include free activities along with beverages and snacks.

On September 12, the New Bedford Science Café will offer “Conversations About Climate Change in New Bedford – Exploring Probable Futures.” Located at the Last Round Bar & Grille at 908 Purchase Street, the talk will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and feature guest speaker Alison Smart, Executive Director of Probable Futures.

On September 14, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra will give a free pop-up performance from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Custom House Square in downtown at 21 Bakers Lane.

You won’t find war in some of the most historic hikes in our area, but you will find remnants of the war machine. But mostly, you’ll find peace and quiet, a most wonderful state of mind, in these three conservation holdings on the South Coast.

They seem like they’ve been there forever, but the World War II lookout towers on Gooseberry Island in Westport, at the far end of the Horseneck Beach reservation, just past the museum and education center known as the Horseneck Lifesaving Station, have been there since the war. They were built to keep a military eye on the sea, notably looking for German submarines, but now are still standing solid, not decaying, jutting into the sky like the sentinels they once were. Gooseberry is a wonderful place for a hike and sightseeing, connected to the mainland by a cement causeway that, until recent years, you could drive over to park in a rugged old dirt-and-rock strewn parking lot. There was a gate across it the last time I wandered down that area, so parking to walk over can be a challenge.

OF WAR

Story and photos

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown is a pristine 242-acre hunk of rocky land with a few miles of walking trails that offer views second to none on all three sides of the promontory just up the road from Sachuest Beach.

But the walk over the causeway is a lesson in man-made obstruction; the ocean on one side of the causeway and on the other pounded by waves, and some controversy still exists that it disrupts the natural order of things. But Gooseberry Island is a terrific place to hike and reflect, and draws a mix of families, boaters (there’s a rudimentary boat ramp there), hikers, birders, and anyone who loves the salty sea air. Walking from the parking area, a flat path cuts through the gut of the island and near the towers it splits in two. After gawking at the towers to the right, and trying to visualize what life must have

been like in them, you can also walk left to the calmer eastern side of the island. Either way, it’s a nice walk, even on the rocky shoreline where you can look for sea glass, shells, and other stuff the waves have tossed to land – including the random massive ocean-eroded log that came from who-knows-where.

Gooseberry is a hotspot for birds as well, as the migratory breeds travel up and down the coast, including swallows, geese, ducks, seabirds, and piping plovers.

MARCHING ON

A much busier walk, but not noticeably due to the size of the place, is Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, which during World War II was used as a rifle range and communications center. Prior to that, colonials used the area for farming, and much later in its life, after the military left, it was the town dump, later being turned over to the Audubon Society, finally undergoing the cleanup and restoration it deserved.

It is now a pristine 242-acre hunk of rocky land with a few miles of walking

trails that offer views second to none on all three sides of the promontory just up the road from the road from Sachuest Beach. The wildlife is extraordinary; Sachuest is home to the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the east coast, and the refuge is home to easily spotted white-tail deer grazing the fields, owls, otters, loons, falcons, and many other creatures both winged and four-footed.

The visitor’s center is a massive, very informative building full of the point’s rich history, including a display of artifacts from the time of the Native Americans up through the war. There are nearly 3 miles of walking trails looping around the property, most of them hugging the coastline where there are benches – or rocky overlooks – to stop and take in nature’s landscape. Down the road is Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge on the shores of Ninigret Pond in Charlestown. On this massive hunk of land once stood another key US military holding, the former Naval Auxiliary Air Station Charlestown.

Here you will see the occasional remnant of giant runways built here, now overgrown but a visible testimony to its past. And one notable presidential bit of trivia: George Herbert Walker Bush trained as a pilot here, and would later become our nation’s 41st Commander-In-Chief.

Prior to it becoming a conservation holding, there was talk of building the state’s first nuclear power plant, but outcry was so strong it was shot down. Luckily for the public, in the years since, there have been public tennis courts built here, an 18-hole disc golf course, a myriad of hiking trails, a dog park, a senior center, and many more attractions.

And due to its remote nature, it has become the perfect home for the very popular Frosty Drew Observatory and Sky Theatre, where thousands of skysearchers have learned what populates the sky above them over the years. War, what is it good for, as the old Edwin Starr song goes, the lyrical answer being “absolutely nothing.” But what the war industry has left behind in its place is spectacularly beautiful and peaceful back in its natural state.

Igot an email bill from my doctor recently about a co-pay I apparently owe for $15. It was for my annual physical, for which I have never been charged a co-pay because they don't ever charge a co-pay for the annual physical. I know this because every year at the reception desk for my physical they say, “No co-pays for annual physicals!” all bright-andsunny-like.

So I called the billing number and got someone I could barely hear because her phone was cutting in and out. I’m assuming, like 99.9% of the world, she was working from home even

though the pandemic is more or less over, living in a place where cellphone connection is as unreliable as the medical billing system.

But when I finally understood what she was saying, it seems the co-pay was because, and I quote, "You apparently discussed things outside what is covered in the annual physical."

Then it went like this (“Me” is me, and “GICWHPR” is Godless Insurance Company With Horrible Phone Reception):

Me: What kind of things does it say we discussed?

GICWHPR: Celiac disease, cardiac concerns,

prostate exam, blood work…

Me: [stunned] You mean medical issues that doctors and patients tend to talk about in the, you know, annual physical? Because it’s all related to, you know, health and this was the annual physical which is largely about health? I mean, how is that outside what's covered by, oh, let's call it, “the annual physical?”

GICWHPR: [silence most telling]

Me: [lightening the mood by being funny regarding one of the most ridiculous charges I’ve ever seen] Okay, here's another thing on the bill. It's a $57 charge that was paid

for but it says it was for the “Medicare Annual Depression Screening.” Do you suppose that depression is from the ridiculous billing system in health care?

GICWHPR: [silence most telling, but then again, it could be the crappy connection and she is laughing heartily at my joke. Doubtful, but I remain hopeful]

Me: Okay, here’s the thing: they paid the $57 but I have no recollection of a depression screening at my annual physical that I apparently have a co-pay for that technically doesn’t exist.

GICWHPR: Oh, that

22 August 2023 | The South Coast Insider
ON MY MIND
Ah, the wonders of modern medicine.

charge was a form you filled out.

Me: [deep calming breath, so deep and calming it hurts] I filled out no such form. I mean, my doctor probably asked how I was doing, I said fine, that was that. Could that have been the screening? Seems rather sparse.

GICWHPR: [silence most telling]

Me: Are you there?

GICWHPR: Yes.

Me: Okay, the reason I ask is because your phone reception is horrible. I can barely hear you. You cut in and out.

GICWHPR: [silence most telling, then garbled chatter, then) …reception is fine…

Me: [trying to shake my head but the tension in my neck is tighter than a crab’s ass so I can’t] Okay, how do I dispute this bill, I mean it’s not a lot but it’s the principle of the thing. Who do I complain to?

GICWHPR: You write to the address on the bottom of the last page of the statement.

Me: [scrolling] Okay… so this one down here… a post office box. In Belfast, Maine?

GICWHPR: Yes, that's the one.

Me: So, snail mail, right? Not email or some other communication method actually from this century? Snail mail? So I guess that’s because they'll figure why would I bother with going through the trouble of writing a snail mail, stamping it, mailing it when it's just easier to just pay the lousy stinking 15 bucks I don’t owe? Which I could do instantly on the internet if healthcare

wasn’t locked in the days of blood-sucking leeches? But since I cannot dispute it instantly, I have to do the Pony Express thing?!

GICWHPR: [silence most telling but I’m sure she is just trying to figure out what the hell “Pony Express” meant]

Me: Okay then, that's what I'll do. I'll write a letter, stamp it and mail it even though it makes zero sense to do it that way, and next year during my non-existent depression screening, even if that's just being asked “How ya feeling?” I’ll tell him I'm depressed by the mindnumbing practices of healthcare and to at least make a bogus co-pay more worth it!

GICWHPR: [silence most telling but I swear I hear a condescending snicker]

Me: HELLLOOOO! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?! No, wait, cancel that, they’ll probably charge me for a hearing test!

GICWHPR: Will there be anything else?

Me: [deep calming breath to the point of wanting to hold it until I turn blue, die, and be done with it] No. That will be all. Thank you so very very much. This has been so fun.

GICWHPR: Have a nice day.

Me: You as well. And say hello to the other couple hundred people in Bumf… I mean, Belfast, Maine, where cellphone reception goes to die.

GICWHPR: I’m not in…

Me: [cutting her off by hanging up]

Sometimes it’s the little victories in healthcare that keep your blood pressure down.
