the region’s coastal charms. Their new property was a former tomato farm, perfect for supporting the couple’s new hobby: raising chickens. Fortunately for them, they had a knack for it. Before too long, the Bishops had more eggs than they knew what to do with. They began selling the surplus, and learning about how to expand the farm in a healthy and sustainable way. To give a sense of how successful this expansion has been, the farm’s chicken population has ballooned from the original 20 to over 3000. While her husband has kept his IT job, Ester has been able to commit herself to the farm full-time. She prides herself on providing her animals with joyful, stressfree lives. “People should know where their food comes from – you can really taste the difference,” said Bishop.

But there’s more to Atlantic Boats than their inland location – they also own and manage the Stonebridge Marina, a location on Buzzards Bay in Onset with 70 slips available for rent throughout the boating season. In addition to seasonal rentals, Stonebridge Marina also offers several “transient slips” for boaters who wish to dine at the Stonebridge Bar & Grille, enjoy Onset Beach or take a walk through downtown Onset. The marina and restaurant are located at 5 East Blvd. in Onset. “Boating is a fantastic way to enjoy the summer. People travel the world to visit this area,” Cornish says. “Southeastern Massachusetts has been a hub for water-goers for centuries. slow boating this season for sure. People won't looking for building sea walls and docks when their business is down. When fuel prices go up, their business goes down." Whaling City Marine Construction's work focuses on new marine construction and replacing and re-securing existing structures. Its website boasts its custom commercial and residential dock, piling, bulkhead, and pier projects can be seen all over Massachusetts and Rhode Island. According to recent MA Department of Energy Resources statistics, the average cost per gallon for regular gasoline has risen 62 percent over last year's average. Diesel fuel is averaging 105 percent higher than last year's average per gallon. Yet boatingindustry.com recently reported that in early January 2022, the National Marine Manufacturers Association NMMA reported U.S. new powerboat retail unit sales are expected to surpass 300,000 units for the second

representative indicated how busy they are getting so early in the season simply by not being able to stop for an interview. "It's too early in the season to tell how busy business will be," she said. "But we are very busy every year. And there was no difference in how busy we were last year over the year before, despite COVID." Nemasket Kayak Center in Wareham also offers guided tours, rentals, and rentals for those looking to paddle in waters closer to the Cape. Their goal is to foster a fun, inclusive, and affordable outdoor experience for visitors. They promise “personal attention to the skill level and needs of every customer.”

Tours include the Agawam Mill Pond, Marion Harbor, Onset Bay, the Taunton River, and more. popularity over the past five years in the United States driven by the recent introduction of low-cost kayaks, a heightened focus on physical fitness and the sport's growing popularity with women. However, greater popularity and affordability have driven many consumers to buy their own kayaks, sapping rental demand. Just the same, industry revenue has grown an annualized 0.3% to $57.3 million during the current period.
Great outdoors
But a boat isn't the only way to enjoy summertime along the coast. Festivals and nature walks are also appealing this time of year. The Taunton Watershed Alliance has good news on that front. It was able to hold its annual festival on June 12 at Weir Riverfront Park in Taunton (after a one-year COVID-sparked hiatus) to great success. "We saw double our participation over the last in-person event, 60 people," said Alliance representative Gloria Bancroft. "People are starting to do things again." This event was preceded by its first guided bird walk of the season, at Sweet Knolls Park, North Dighton, on June 5. "We saw people there we had never seen before," Bancroft said. "All ages. All our activities have been well-attended this year." Next up, on July 1, is the Alliance's guided walk along the boardwalk at the Fall River Heritage State Park. This park is a significant spot to lead such a walk because is the southern end of watershed the Alliance is working to protect and preserve, Bancroft pointed out. Bancroft said the Alliance is also planning an "Angler Day" for the third week of July, a family-fishing day event, and even a "Discover the Watershed" walk and event. Both will be at Sweet Knolls Park (exact dates and detail yet to be announced). The Alliance is even working on sponsoring a kayak trip event in September. She said people should follow their website (savethetaunton.org) for details on any of the above. "Prior to COVID people wanted to be on the water," she said. "That feeling has returned. People are knocking on my door, even the elderly, asking on how they can get on the water again. COVID is done and they want to be outdoors."

In New Bedford, Mayor Jon Mitchell remarked at the Hatch Street Studios event, “I’m grateful that MassDevelopment has established a TDI District along The Ave, which for decades has been the physical manifestation of New Bedford’s ethnic melting pot. A big reason the Acushnet Avenue TDI district was established is due to the years-long effort known as “Love The Ave.” It’s the loose organization of community members, non-profit groups, municipal agencies, and private businesses which for several years have worked to raise the profile of The Ave and the North End generally as a distinct area. Today, it’s overseen by the New Bedford Economic Development Council (NBEDC) and maintains a robust communications platform on the web and social media in order to promote all things North End and The Ave. Also, the NBEDC brings together all members of the ad-hoc group to share news and events and plan potential collaborative initiatives during quarterly meetings.
The designation will help energize existing small businesses, bring new ones to life, and support long-term neighborhood vitality Now accepting applications Now, as an official Acushnet Avenue TDI district, the Love The Ave partners hope to double down on the impact of working together to further define the district and help meet the needs of the residential, cultural and small business community. “There is no question that investments in our Gateway Cities like MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative yield positive economic and community growth where it is needed most,” said Representative Christopher Hendricks.

Individually and as a team, Love The Ave members have worked hard to activate and maximize the assets found on The Ave and in North End New Bedford. The founding member of Love The Ave is the Community Economic Development Center (CEDC) – and it works right on The Ave to provide vital services to the district’s dynamic immigrant population. The CEDC has launched a plethora of arts and culture projects from murals to the popular annual Guatemalan Kite Festival to help revitalize the neighborhood. That’s in addition to its core mission acting as a day-to-day resource center for district residents, providing everything from social services to financial guidance. Groundwork Southcoast is another Love The Ave partner, based in the city’s Brooklawn Park along The Ave. However, its signature project is transforming another park in the North End – Riverside Park along the upper Acushnet River – into a resilience hub. This profound project has literally changed the landscape. In a few years, Groundwork Southcoast and its “Green Team” have created a sprawling and impressive community garden in Riverside Park, while generally tending to the needs of this once neglected river bank. Meanwhile, along Acushnet Avenue, the commercial corridor is renowned for its many storefronts and large concentration of restaurants, markets and eateries offering a diverse menu with an emphasis on destination Portuguese cuisine. Love The Ave vigorously promotes them all on a near-daily basis on social media.

“By developing coalitions of local public, private, and nonprofit partners to make progress toward shared neighborhood goals, MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative has become a proven model for accelerating economic development in Gateway Cities across Massachusetts,” said Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy, who serves as chair of MassDevelopment’s Board of Directors. “This collaborative, street-level approach engages community members to advance small businesses, activate public spaces, rethink vacant properties, and more.” MassDevelopment President and CEO Dan Rivera added, “From new storefront signage and district branding efforts, to planning studies and vacant building activation, our Transformative Development Initiative helps Gateway City partners tackle projects that advance neighborhood goals, stimulate economic activity, and build momentum for future investment. “TDI provides a critical benefit to our urban neighborhoods, and we’re grateful for the support of the BakerPolito Administration and Legislature as we continue to expand its impact across the Commonwealth.” It all adds up to something new and exciting, but also something many here in New Bedford have known for a while: it’s wonderful to Love The Ave.

The Westport Friends Annual Book Fair offers book lovers a treasure trove of opportunities. After a two-year COVID-related layoff, the Westport Quakers will host their event for the 59th year, offering visitors a vast potpourri of titles from which to purchase. The fair is held rain or shine from July 9 through 17, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Westport Friends Meeting House at 938 Main Road in Westport. “This is very much a community event, something that people look forward to every year,” says Buddy Baker-Smith, a volunteer with the fair. “It’s a unique festive celebration of books and reading for all ages. It’s wonderful to see the excitement and delight on faces young and old. People really enjoy being around others who share a passion for books as much as they do. We see a lot of familiar faces each year.” This year the Book Fair will feature 30,000 titles in quality condition, all of which are donated by the community. All of the books are in quality condition. “We’re not interested in selling books for maximum profit,” Buddy says. “It’s really about creating a fun event where you can find something you love.” All of the books are categorized by subject, such as history, romance, mystery, science fiction, hobbies, et cetera. They can be in a variety of forms, such as paperbacks, hard cover, or coffee table books. You may even find a book which is autographed by the author. In addition to books, the event also offers children’s toys, jigsaw puzzles, books on tape, DVDs, record albums and CDs. With a tumultuous two years behind us, the summer of 2022 feels like it holds promise.
F
or some, that return to normalcy arrives with the 19th annual South Coast Artists Open Studio Tour slated for the weekends of July 16-17 and August 20-21, in the towns of Tiverton, Little Compton, Westport, and Dartmouth. “It’s been quite a while since anyone has felt safe visiting the private spaces of our friends and artists,” say SCA President Heather Stivison. “And now artists are eager to welcome you back into their personal studios and show you how they’ve been inspired and what they’ve been working on while

you’ve been away. Expect some exciting changes and a new shared experience.” By opening the doors to their private world, art lovers can witness the joy of what it’s like to be an artist. Going inside a studio is the best way to understand the inner workings of a creative life – something that isn’t always apparent when visiting a gallery. Up close and personal is the key, Stivison says. The annual studio tour explodes on the scene every summer on the third weekend of both July and August. It attracts thousands of art lovers to an idyllic coastal world that is well-loved by visitors from all over. The open studio tour is a well-recognized event that attracts regional attention. Visitors come from all over the east coast to see an amazing variety of artists that range from new artists to nationally-known artists who live and work in the South Coast. “This region is unique,” Stivison adds. “It’s a blend of rural and coastal living that is both unassuming and sophisticated. From that rare mix you get an inspired way of life that is

harmonious for artists and anyone else who chooses to visit.” The tour, first held in 2004, was organized by Amy Lund, a Tiverton weaver who wanted to share her work with natural fibers on a loom. A small group of other artists joined her on those first few years and soon SCA was born into a non-profit group that encouraged arts education and the actual tour where visitors explore the inner workings of studios across the four towns. This year that tradition continues as 75 artists open the doors to their studios. Since its inception, the tour has been a free event designed for the entire family. Many of the artists demonstrate their skills so that visitors can better understand just what it takes to fully realize a creative vision. This year the variety of work showing includes paintings, sculpture, pottery, woodworking, textiles, photography, glass, encaustic, watercolor, jewelry, and mixed media. “I love seeing the faces of old friends

ON MY MIND
RE: FW: FW: Read This!! by Paul Kandarian
I take no credit for these quick jokes – or for most of them anyway, since I made up a few. They are largely borrowed from uncopyrighted memes scattered in the paradoxical moral wasteland/comedy bonanza that is social media.
I
just love sassy, smart, clever, gross, extreme, and downright silly one-liners and such. And some of these are or could be bumper stickers, which as we all know, are the Adam and Eve of memes. The comic Steven Wright is my hero, the dry, deadpan specialist of such jokes as “Everything is within walking distance if you have the time.” A well-told joke is the opposite of expectations, humor in general is just the truth exaggerated, a laugh can be the body’s reaction to something funny or something that makes you very nervous. George Carlin was firmly in the latter category; he spoke the truth that was as hilarious as it was brutally true. He made us

laugh, cringe, and think all at the same time. Anyway, here be some very funny one-or-more liners, and if you’re not laughing, you’re not listening/reading right.
Fun game
When someone tells you the name of their new baby, repeat it back to them with their surname and go, “Oh, like the murderer?” If a woman tells a man he’s right, technically, that’s sarcasm. I’m never giving blood again, they ask so many questions, like “whose blood is it, where’d you get it, and why is it in a bucket?” Whenever I think of the 80s, I think of a boom box, but honestly, that’s just a stereo type.

Please cross the street like your life depends on it. Because if I’m driving the car, oh, it does… believe me, it does. Beer is now cheaper than gas. Do drink and not drive. Is it possible to put off procrastinating? Education is expensive but ignorance is so much easier to fake. A person has so many layers. Peel them away, and man, do they scream. Sometimes you’re the bird, sometimes you’re the windshield, and if you can’t figure that out then don’t even talk to me. Pavlov’s dogs were driven insane one day when he wasn’t home and it was noon time at the church next door. I just watched a
documentary on marijuana. I think all documentaries should be watched on marijuana. Beauty is only skin deep. Stupid goes clear to the bone. Fill a pinata with ketchup and you’ll never have to host a kid’s birthday party again. A study showed that drinking hot coffee naked makes you far less likely to spill it. In the event of a natural disaster, put hot dogs in your pockets so the rescue dogs will get to you first. How to freak out a car salesman: get in the trunk, ask “Tell me if you can hear this,” close it and then start screaming. Chart is the worst pie flavor, ever.
My child isn’t on any honor roll. He’s an idiot. It’s okay if you want to save the whales, but where you gonna put them? Why would a woodchuck want to chuck wood? Asking for a rodent friend. Gopher it. An old Catskills comedian with a switchblade tried to rob me but when he said, “Take my knife, please!” I did. If you love someone, let them go. But untie them first, and then make your escape because chances are, they’re going straight to the cops. Age is relative. When you’re over the hill, you pick up speed. Because I choose not to drink doesn’t mean I’m not
fun. That’s a separate choice I’ve also made. If dinosaurs were still alive, we wouldn’t be. All hail extinction! Why did the suicidal chicken only cross the road halfway? Figure it out. After my funeral, I want a friend to take my phone and text everyone “Thanks for coming.” You can strike a match, you can strike a pose and you can strike for better pay. That’s it, three strikes, I’m out. That’s all folks, I’m here all weekend, try the veal, tip your waiter, and remember: if you ain’t laughin’, you ain’t livin’.
