his is the fourth article in a series to help inform and educate fishermen and women on all the newest types of rods that are available today.

Rod performance and sensitivity are two key factors to consider when selecting a rod but the total weight of the rod is the biggest factor affecting the overall performance of the rod. Have you ever wondered why you are worn completely out after fishing for six hours plus? If your rods are over or close to ten years old, I will guarantee you that the rod weight is a key factor.

Most rods from that era weigh a minimum of five and a half ounces and up. I had a customer bring in two six foot medium action rods from that era. The rods weighed six point four ounces each. Just by removing the glue in handles and upgrading to cork grips and a graphite reel seat, we lowered the total weight on each rod by two point two ounces.

Think back, remember going to a tackle store or a custom rod builder and selecting a rod you thought you might like but even with a reel on it felt “tip heavy”. Now visit your local custom rod builder or tackle store and select a micro guide system rod. The words “tip heavy” will no longer be in your vocabulary.

Just for comparison, a set of double foot guides for an older seven foot spin rod will weigh as much as one ounce. A set of micro-guides for the same rod plus the tip, weigh between point one and point two ounces even though there are three more guides to the set. These weights hold true on both custom and the better built factory rods.

So what is light? Most of the less expensive store bought rods weigh four point eight to six ounces plus. The factory built micro-guide rods weigh in at four to five ounces. How would you feel about a rod that weighs three point one to three point six ounces? I have built four rods for my wife and myself and they are not bream rods. We use them for Drum, Flounder, Bass, Stripers and Speckled Trout.

After fishing all day long I still have enough energy to take my wife out to dinner and not fall asleep during the meal. The future in rods is light.

Dorado Tactics

Dorado is one of the most fun fish to catch in our oceans, their greedy gregarious feeding habits along with the aerial acrobatics when hooked up make this species a firm favourite amongst offshore anglers, not to mention the fact that they also make good table fair.

There are many lures that can be used, and I have caught them on small spoons meant for Queen Mackerel right through to large 12 inch Kona’s meant for Marlin so there is no saying which lure is perfect for them, I will list some of my favorites which have produced me many Dorado over the years.

Dorado is Spanish for “golden” and it reminds one of El Dorado “The lost city of Gold” which I am sure is due to the conspicuous colouring of this species. Dorado is also a constellation in the Southern Sky that has a Large Magellanic Cloud surrounding it.

The name Mahi-mahi comes from Hawaii which means “very strong” and I am quite certain that this derives from the fight these fish give when hooked up.

Dorado are surface dwellers and are found offshore in temperate, tropical and subtropical waters all over the world, they are an extremely fast growing species with an average lifespan of around 5yrs, average sizes caught are from 6-15Kgs, they can get larger with some fish reaching well over 20Kgs which are usually Bulls and are highly sought after by Sport anglers worldwide. These fish often swim in small shoals when younger, and the mature ones are usually found in pairs, so you can be sure if you catch a male the female is right there close by.

Dorado will usually be around when water temperatures reach 24deg.C and higher, known as an open water species it is common that they are caught out in the deeper waters, but these fish can also often be found near shallow reefs and even right behind the breakers.

You will often find them hunting near shallow pinnacles and ledges, colour lines, current lines, weed lines and one of my personal favorite places is by floating debris. Off Durban you will also find them at the FADS. When you go out looking for Dorado you need to find these types of places and you will most likely find Dorado.

They are not a difficult fish to hook up as they are ravenous greedy predators that will eat just about anything that moves from small to large, fast moving and slow moving, they like bright colours and shiny things and so just about any lure will do the trick.

Lures like the Island lures are ideal for adding strip baits, and 6 inch cupped faced lures like the Williamson Sailfish Catcher are perfect for adding whole dead baits into your trolling spread.

Once you have a hook up and you are fighting the fish, do not clear all your lines and never ever stop the boat, keep it at least one motor engaged. I usually like to keep one of the rigger lines and the shot gun out as far too many times you will get the mate screaming off with one of these whilst you are fighting the initial hook up. Keep a spinning rod handy for pitch baits and once you get your first fish close to the boat hold him there about 10m away, rig up a dead sardine on the spinning rod and cast it out and let this drift because if it was a shoal all the other Dorado’s will be following that fish, only once this baited line goes on with a fish do you bring in the initial fish, and you repeat this procedure until there is no more action, often you can get another 5 or 6 Dorado once you have the initial hook up, but almost always you will at least catch the mate.

Dead Baits and Live Baits Dorado loooove dead sardines and mackerel, these can be fished in several ways, as mentioned above you can use sardines to add some flavor to you Kona’s, and you can also troll them slowly behind the boat, especially when you find floating debris, weed lines and

Here is a story about a raving mad Dorado Bull.

A few years ago whilst fishing with some clients we had had a good day catching Snoek (Queen Mackerel), but now the Snoek had gone quiet and so we made our way to the deep side of No.1 to do some bottom fishing. Before I even had the bottom rods ready we noticed Dorado flashing by the boat, and so I changed the rigging and we started pitching dead sardines, I remember that day very well because we already had 11 Snoek onboard and we only had 19 sardines on board and each one produced a Dorado.

The fishing was crazy mad and for most of the time all 5 of us had a Dorado on and we were running around the centre Feathers and Island Lures consul deck knitting whilst the fish who were trying their utmost to tangle us up, we already had about 10 Dorado on board when one of the guys hooked into a Big Bull of around 15Kg’s and he really tested the spinning tackle to its limits but eventually we got this angry slapping ball of Dorado onto the boat.

This was where the real fun began, because when I gaffed him and swung this bad tempered fish overboard he wriggled off the gaff landing on deck, 3 guys were still fighting their Dorado’s and this Bull decided to start flapping his way around the deck chasing and slapping everyone on board, luckily the hook had come out so there was no danger of this but we all got our fair share of Dorado blood painting.

The Golden Colour of the Dorado so on. You can also fish these dead baits or live Mackerel on the drift using balloons (keeping baits close to the surface), where you keep close to a weed line or near the debris, if the current is screaming there is no need to use balloons as the speed alone will keep your baits up. Drifting dead sardines and live mackerel like this works extremely well when the North East wind is blowing. You can also use spinning rods and cast these dead sardines at the weed lines or debris whilst on the drift. For drifting dead baits I like to use a leader of 0.8mm – 1.0mm and a narrow gauge J hook from 6/0 to 8/0 which you simply push through the eye sockets, and a 7/0 circle hook also works extremely well.

Again, once you have the 1st fish on, do not boat him until you get the second hook up.

This method makes your boat into a FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) all by itself and you will often find the Dorado feeding right at the boat. Often using this method we have had 5 or even 6 fish on at the same time.

Handling Dorado To have a clear conscience after writing this article, I have to include a little about handling these fish. Dorado are bad tempered fish, and when hooked up fight like mad and jump like crazy, once on board they go even crazier and if not dealt with correctly can cause injury to those on the boat, especially when chain gangs are involved.

The best thing to do is before you gaff the fish, have a crew member open the fish hatch so when you gaff the fish, you gaff and bring over board directly into the fish hatch in one move and shut the door.

AMERICA’S FISHERMEN TAKE TWO IN A ROW House Votes 246-174 To Defund National Ocean Policy

(5/10/2012) Less than 24 hours after the House of Representatives approved by bipartisan vote (220-191) a measure to close the funding loophole created by environmental special interest groups to expand Limited Access Privilege Programs or “catch shares,” along the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico, the House yesterday approved an amendment which would halt funding for the implementation of Executive Order 13547, President Obama’s ocean zoning and National Ocean Policy.

The amendment to H.R. 5326 (Fiscal Year 2013 Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bill) was offered by Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX) and would prohibit the use of any funds appropriated under this bill from being used to implement the National Ocean Policy established under Executive Order 13547. Last night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the amendment by a 246-174 vote.

In a statement following the vote, Rep. Flores called it “imperative that we first understand the effects this policy will have on jobs as well as the vast coastal and inland economies,” adding that he was “pleased to see the passage of my amendment preventing the funding for the National Ocean Policy, which had the potential to take funds away from existing congressionally authorized activities critical to the ocean and coastal economies.”

House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-WA) said “without knowing the potential jobs and economic ramifications of the Policy, nor the amount of time, money and resources it will cost to implement, it is imperative that we halt funding so that these questions can be answered and proper Congressional oversight can be conducted.”

The Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) called the last two days of congressional action significant in terms of the national efforts to overturn the past 4 years of agenda-driven policy efforts against the will U.S. coastal residents. “The vote to halt funding on efforts which would deny Americans access to our coastal waters and privatize our marine fish stocks is not partisan in nature,” said RFA executive director Jim Donofrio. “This is not about Democrats or Republicans it’s about protecting the rights and heritage of our coastal residents.”

In July 2010, President Obama signed an Executive Order to implement a new National Ocean Policy, which includes a mandatory Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning initiative to “zone” the oceans. The House Natural Resources Committee has held five hearings related to either the mandatory ocean zoning or funding for agencies which are implementing the National Ocean Policy. Prior to the President’s executive order, a flawed bill was introduced before the same Committee during each of the last four congressional sessions going back to 2008, but the over-burdensome bureaucracy contained within the legislation kept it bottled up.

Just this past year, Chairman Hastings sent two letters - the first on February 23, 2012 and the second on March 20, 2012 - to the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) asking questions about how funds have already been used to implement the National Ocean Policy. The Committee has yet to receive a complete response to all of the questions and requests for information. Chairman Hastings also sent a letter to the Chairmen of the House Committee on Appropriations asking for the inclusion of language to prohibit the use of funds to implement that National Ocean Policy in all of the FY13 Appropriations bills.

Donofrio pointed out that RFA has been especially critical of this Administration for advancing agenda which completely contradicts the needs and concerns of those within the recreational fishing community. “I keep hearing from members of the recreational fishing industry who are angry about these efforts moving forward, but few have stood up openly to oppose the efforts or to inform this Administration we’re not happy with the lack of response,” Donofrio. “There are a few Beltway insiders who are willing to go along to get along, but we’re happy that House has made it very clear where they stand on the issue.

In April, an industry coalition letter signed by 83 industry groups and trade associations, including the RFA, supported Chairman Hastings’ request that no funds be appropriated for implementing the Policy until there is time for further examination of the Policy’s jobs and economic implications.

“RFA has had numerous meetings with high-ranking members of Congress about these

policies, including House Speaker Boehner who himself is a fishermen and understands what we’re dealing with right now at NOAA Fisheries and within the White House CEQ. This may be the first presidential election in history where the rights of coastal fishermen enter the national debate.”

Rather than working with the bureaucrats to secure a seat at the National Ocean Policy table, Donofrio said the RFA plans to keep working the Legislative Branch of government to fix broken laws and ideological policies the way our government was designed to work.

“Brokering deals and securing compromise behind the backs of Congress or through executive privilege might be the way of nobles and aristocrats, but that’s not the way of the American people,” he said.

RFA managing director Jim Hutchinson, Jr. recently spelled out the problems with the present National Ocean Policy in a national blog at The Hill newspaper (Why National Ocean Policy Is Flawed) at http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/energy-aenvironment/225243-why-national-ocean-policy-is-flawed. “It wasn’t up for more than a few hours before the ‘black tie’ environmentalists started attacking the messenger instead of the message, which clearly shows these ideologues don’t have much have faith in their own position any longer,” Hutchinson laughed.

“The environmental business leaders have shown their hand, and Congress is now well aware that this entire movement to close down our oceans is based simply on hostile, agenda-driven rhetoric by a handful of true extremists,” Hutchinson said.

WALMART STOCKS TUMBLE ON BRIBERY HEADLINES RFA Encourages Fishermen To Continue With National Boycott Two recent New York Times articles have put Wal-Mart and the Walton family’s dirty laundry in the international spotlight once again.

The incidents which focus on corporate greenwashing in the United States with Walton family support for anti-fishing efforts in North America, coupled with an alleged $24 million worth of bribes in Central America to speed up the chain’s expansion into Mexico, has the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) once again reminding of the ongoing angler boycott of Wal-Mart.

“The latest headlines prove that Wal-Mart and the Walton Family Foundation are no friends of local communities anywhere, and their ongoing efforts to destroy coastal fishing businesses through support of arbitrary marine reserves and privatization of fish stocks nationwide should not be supported by anglers,” said RFA executive director Jim Donofrio.

“We’re asking coastal fishermen who support open access, under the law, to healthy and sustainable fish stocks to send a clear message to this arrogant corporation that we’ve had enough of their greenwashing and grafting efforts,” Donofrio said.

This week, Wal-Mart is making world headlines following a New York Times story which charges the Bentonville, Arkansas company and its leaders of squashing an internal investigation into suspected payments of over $24 million in bribes to obtain permits to build in Mexico. If proven true, this would put Wal-Mart in direct violation of U.S. major anti-bribery law under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

The bribery scandal was exposed on the same day that the Gloucester Times of Massachusetts exposed a reporting lapse in another recent New York Times article about the relationship between Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Wal-Mart partnering together for “more enlightened and sustainable operations.”

With June now here most of us fishermen have already had a pretty good spring season, lots of Blue fish,

Spanish Mackerel, Cobia and Flounder. The month of June is going to usher in another change of sorts as some of the springtime fish move on north such as the Cobia and the Chopper Blues. They will move north to cooler waters of the northern outer banks, although you will still find a few stragglers throughout the month.

The best fishing for the month of June is going to be for Flounder, Spanish mackerel and Blues. The Spanish will still be in the shallow water for most of the month but as the heat of summer gets here they are going to move out in about 30-50 FT. of water and will be caught using the same methods as before, with trolled spoons and small shallow diving plugs such as the Yozuri crystal minnow. Another way to fish for them is to troll a top water bait such as a medium sized spoon or small squirted bait that skips the top of the water as sometimes the larger fish will be feeding at the surface on glass minnows and Summer Blues will be caught in the same way.

As for Flounder the month of June is one of the best times to catch Flounder in the shallows of the inshore waters, back in the creeks and marshes in about 3-5 FT of water. I would recommend using live mud minnows or finger mullet but the mud minnows seem to be the better all-around bait because they are more durable and require less oxygen to keep alive. For those that are going to be using artificial baits the scented soft plastic baits really do work well especially in conjunction with a buck tail in white, pink or chartreuse, scented baits by Deep Creek, Berkley Gulp, fish bites etc... If you do not have scented baits, you really should try out Pro-Cure bait scents. They come in a wide variety of scents such as Menhaden, shrimp, Mullet, lady fish, Blue Crab and inshore-Saltwater which is a mixture of all the inshore scents put together. You can use Pro-Cure on just about any bait from hard baits to buck tail hair. It’s a grease base and sticks to just about anything. One thing to remember about Flounder as the weather heats up in the latter part of June they are going to be moving to deeper cooler water around structure and the inshore wrecks and reefs. To catch the really big door mats the use a live Menhaden about 3 inches long and fish it in deep water. The Morehead City Port is a good place to catch the really big ones.

Radar is Now Available for Small Boats

Put a radar on your boat and you will be able to “see” through fog, rain and dark-

ness. In the hands of a competent operator radar is a remarkable aid to safe navigation. It can confirm your position relative to landmarks and navigation aids such as buoys and by detecting other waterborne traffic make a great contribution to collision avoidance. Once reserved for large yachts and ships, today’s radar products are available at prices and sizes suitable for use on boats as small as 18 feet. Even the least costly radars provide quite complete operational capabilities, including on screen display of the range and bearing of targets. Electrical power consumption is modest and well within the capability of virtually any boat equipped with an engine. The ultimate value of a radar rests with the user’s ability to understand and properly use the information on the screen. New users will find video tape and computer based radar training programs of great value.

Radar detects targets in a manner similar to the way we see things when using a flashlight in total darkness, when the only objects we can see are those illuminated by the flashlight’s beam. Radar operates in a similar manner, except that it “sees” only the minute amount of the radio frequency energy it transmitted that has been reflected back to its antenna. A marine radar antenna constantly rotates, illuminating its surroundings with a continuous series of very short duration, rapidly repeated pulses of energy. A reflection is noted by the receiver and will be shown on the screen as coming from wherever the antenna was pointing at that moment. The distance at which the target is shown is calculated from the time that elapsed from when the pulse was sent until the reflection was received. The on screen intensity of the target depends on how much energy was reflected by target. The size of the target is generally related to the size of the reflecting surface, although a small, highly reflecting target may appear larger than a larger, less efficient reflector. Metal surfaces are generally the best reflectors while wood and fiberglass are stealthy targets and the reason a prudent mariner will mount a radar reflector as high as possible on a boat.

Radar is a real time image of what surrounds the boat and to be of real use should be installed at the helm station of the boat. The screen image must be easily viewable under all lighting conditions. Using today’s technology TV like CRTs present the best quality images. The new monochrome and color LCD screen displays are constantly improving and offer the advantage of being waterproof.

Choosing a radar requires evaluation of a number of performance specifications. The maximum range specification and transmitter power rating are often quoted as meaningful measures of the suitability of a radar for a particular boat. Although of interest, they are not particularly appropriate measures on which to base a selection.

Radar energy, like the energy emitted from the VHF transceiver, travels in a generally straight line. Horizontally directed radar energy is soon well above the curved surface of the earth and can illuminate only those objects tall enough to protrude above the radar horizon. For example, for a radar mounted at a height of 22 feet above the water, an object must be more than 1200 feet high to be seen at a distance of 48 miles. (Mounting the radar at the top of a 100 foot mast won’t help much, the shortest object visible at 48 miles will still have to be at least 880 feet high). Regardless of the size of the vessel or the maximum range or power of marine radar it is most often used to scan for targets not more than about 6 miles distant and will frequently be operated at ranges of less than 2 miles. Choosing a radar on the basis of maximum range is not a good idea. The typical magnetron equipped marine radar cannot detect and display targets that are less than about 200 feet from the antenna. (The receiver is necessarily “blind” to signal reflections from close-in targets because it must be desensitized in the immediate aftermath of the emission of the energy pulse from the magnetron transmitter.

Radar transmitter power for all but a few new continuous wave transmitter radars (where power is stated as average power) is defined as Peak Pulse Power. Although manufacturers typically provide increasing power levels in their longer range and most costly sets, a modest amount of power is usually sufficient for the relatively short ranges most often used. transmitters can provide excellent results. For most recreational boats, transmitter power becomes important only in very heavy rain conditions. Rain reflects and absorbs radar energy. The reflection is useful in showing us the location and shape of rain showers. The absorption of radar energy can prevent a radar from portraying targets it would normally detect. Higher transmitter power can be valuable in such cases, however there are some tropical downpour conditions that can absorb all of the energy of even the most powerful ship radar sets.

The size of the radar antenna plays a key role in determining the overall performance of a radar.

Marine radars use the same antenna for both transmission and reception. The transmitter energy is carefully focused, much like the light from a well designed searchlight. However, unlike a searchlight, where the desired pattern of projected light is usually circular, the energy from the radar must illuminate a relatively wide vertical swath to ensure that the target area is well covered as the boat rolls and pitches in the sea. At the same time, a narrow horizontal beam is needed to allow objects close to one another in azimuth to be seen as separate targets and not as a single blob. Typical vertical beam angles are ±12.5 degrees. Horizontal beam angles, which are largely determined by the length of the antenna range from about 2.4 degrees for the smallest antennas to 0.75 degree for antennas about 10 feet in length. Even the smallest antennas will provide useful target information at the relatively short ranges most often used by small craft.

The radar antenna, transmitter and receiver are usually packaged as a single unit, enclosed in either a radome or in a housing with a rotating, bar-like antenna mounted on its top surface.

The smallest radome housed units are less than 12 inches in diameter and weigh less than 10 pounds, making them practical for installation on even quite small boats. The antenna should be mounted at a height that places it at least two feet above and four to five feet from the head of anyone on board and in a position where crew members will usually be at least five feet from the antenna. Mounting the antenna more than about 22 feet above the water will not make a worthwhile contribution to maximum range operation and can degrade the radar’s ability to show important close-in targets. A radar mounting pole that places the radar about eight feet above the deck works well.

The power of pleasure boat radar transmitters ranges from about 2 kW to as much as 50 kW sets used on large yachts (with the exception of the new solid state continuous wave sets where average power may be as low as one-tenth of a watt). All of these power ratings are peak power.

The transmitter delivers its power in extremely short pulses, usually on the order of 0.07 to 0.7 millionths of a second long. Pulses repeat at rates between 1000 and 3000 per second. The

While the New York Times’ story on the bribery scandal has sent Wal-Mart’s stocks tumbling in early Monday trading, RFA is hoping that saltwater anglers and fishing business owners will help send Wal-Mart stocks tumbling even further in the days ahead by refusing to shop at the corporate giant any longer.

“The Walton family uses their fortune to buy off friends who’ll cover for their despicable business practices, whether it’s corporate greenwashing with EDF, rebranding efforts through national trade association campaigns, or apparently by way of directed bribes to local officials in other countries,” Donofrio said. “Don’t just stop buying fishing tackle at Wal-Mart, stop supporting this company altogether and let’s quit supporting complete buyouts and takeovers of local communities.”

Last August, RFA asked fishermen to publicly boycott Walmart stores following issuance of a news release from Wal-Mart corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas where the Walton family announced investments totaling more than $71.8 million awarded to various environmental initiatives, with over $36 million alone handed over to Marine Conservation grantees including Ocean Conservancy, Conservation International Foundation, Marine Stewardship Council, World Wildlife Fund and EDF. The RFA pointed out that by contributing over $36 million towards marine reserves and catch share programs, the Waltons have turned their back on local fishing communities. “Shopping for fishing equipment at Wal-Mart is contributing directly to the demise of our sport, it’s supporting lost fishing opportunities and decreased coastal access for all Americans,” said Donofrio in originally calling on the national angler boycott of the corporate giant.

“I realize that Wal-Mart offers cheap stuff for consumers and provides a tax base for local towns, but it’s time for coastal Americans to ask themselves, at what cost are they’re willing to allow this takeover to move forward,” added Donofrio.

average power consumption of most radar sets is quite low, with small boat radar usually consuming less than 50 watts of 12 volt power. Providing this amount of power is rarely a problem, even on boats under sail with no engine or generator set operating. Solid-state, CW radar sets typically consume less than 20 watts, excluding the display screen unit.

Radar can be an invaluable aid to navigation. However, it is an adjunct to not a substitute for other means for knowing your position and that of other vessels. A radar equipped vessel is expected to have the set in operation whenever maneuvering in conditions of limited visibility.

Radar Detectors similar in function to those commonly used in cars to announce the presence of speed control radar are available for use on boats. These detectors are designed to detect energy at the frequencies used for marine radar and will not respond to typical speed detection radar sets. The intent in their use is to alert the mariner to the presence of a nearby marine radar. Such information can be of some use, with the value largely dependent on the nature of the marine traffic in the area.

The devices are passive, they cannot provide any warning of your presence to the vessel’s whose radar signals they detect.

Radar Reflectors Most small vessels are difficult to detect with marine radar, in fact the typical fiberglass boat is a virtually stealthy target. A metal mast is a very poor radar reflector. To have a reasonable likelihood of being seen on another vessel’s radar your vessel must provide a reflecting surface capable of returning a significant amount of incident radar energy back in the direction from which it arrived. Various forms of radar reflectors are available, ranging from seemingly simple corner reflectors made of three intersecting sheets of radar reflective material to complex reflector geometry’s using varying forms of corner reflector or a Luneburg lens. A number of articles comparing the usefulness of the many types of reflectors have appeared in various publications. To many it appears that using two of the basic corner reflector types, each suspended at a reasonable height above the boat’s structure is an effective way to enhance the likelihood of being seen on a ship’s radar.
