North Portsea Island Scheme Project Update Spring 2022 We are returning for the next wave of construction! After pausing all work close to the sea during the winter to protect overwintering birds, we are excited to return to commence work at Eastern Road from April 2022.

As construction work will be moving further south along Eastern Road, the Langstone Harbour Viewing car park will be closed from Tuesday, 15th March 2022 until autumn 2023, when phase 4 of the scheme is expected to be complete. The path along the coast between the Andrew Simpson Watersport Centre and the Langstone Harbour Viewing Car Park will also remain closed, a diversion is in place (see map).

Work around the Kendall’s Wharf site included raising the road level and building an earth embankment and a timber cladded steel sheet pile wall. This was undertaken between November 2019 and October 2020.

Work along the Eastern Road, including the construction of a textured concrete seawall with two areas of glass flood wall, started in spring 2021. Until the end of October 2021 when work had to pause, a total of 600m sea wall was completed (including 100m of glass panels) from Kendall’s Wharf up to the land north of Harbourside Park.

SAFETY Please keep your safety in mind when walking close to construction works. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you in advance for your cooperation throughout the works.

More than just a wall

Most of the sea defence wall along the Eastern Road will be a textured wall using an “Eco-formliner” mould, which imprints into the wall during construction. As such, the texturing is part of the actual sea defence and has a 100-year design life. Coastal Partners worked with experts including the University of Glasgow and University of Bournemouth to design the mould for the project. The textured seawall aims to provide a habitat for marine plant and animal species found in Langstone Harbour and is the first specifically designed for inter-tidal ecology in the UK.
