Thetheater,locatedonRoute26in Clarksville,justwestofMillville,wasfoundedin 2010bymagician/lawyer/entrepreneurRich BlochandhiswifeSue,aconstitutionallawprofessoratGeorgetownUniversity.
Itsfirstlocationwasaformergaragein Millville,whichBlochandcrewconvertedintoa cozy,quirkytheaterthathostedmagiciansand entertainersfromallovertheworldforthenext 10years.
DickensParlourTheatrehasnowsettled intoits“new”locationbehindGoodEarthMarket &Restaurantandhasafullslateofentertainmentforthe2024summerseason.Notonly that,butthediningareaofthetheaterbuilding
hasnowbecomearestaurantuntoitsown, whichwillbeopendailyregardlessofthe scheduleatthetheater,accordingtopartners BlochandSusanRyan,ownerofGoodEarth Market&Restaurant.
CalledFlavor,thenewrestaurantisasistertotheGoodEarthmarketandeaterynext door.Flavor’semphasiswillbeonfun,withits logoincluding“OvertheTopGourmetBurgers, MilkshakesandFun.”
RyansaidsheandBlochworkedtogether to“revamp”thediningspaceandtheentrance tothebuilding.Thenewfurniturecomplements theornatefixturesandrichcolorsoftheoriginaldesign,andaddsevenmoredepthandrichnesstothediningarea.
Theentrancetothebuildinghasalsobeen slightlyalteredtohelpwiththeflowofpatrons totherestaurantandthetheater,andhelped withaccesstothekitchenduringashow,Ryan said.
“It’sbeautiful,”shesaid.
Theideaforthemenuandthegeneral aestheticforthenewrestaurantcamefroma “burgerroom”RyanhadvisitedinAmsterdam withherhusband,shesaid.
“Itwasthisreallyfancyspace,butthey servedtheseincredibleburgers,”shesaid.
Ryanthoughttheconceptwouldbeperfectforthediningspaceandthatpatronswould cometheretoeat,whethertheyhadplansto seeashowornot.Shesaidthatinthefirstfew weeksoftherestaurantopening,itseemedher vision—whichfront-of-housemanager JoanneMalcuitsharedandhadahandinbringingtolife—wasontarget.
ThemenuatFlavorincludeshouse-made, hand-cutfries,whichcanbeasideforaburger orsandwich,oraheartystarterwithageneroustoppingofcheese,baconandsourcream. Otherstartersincludesmokedfishdip,served withaged-parmesancrackers,Koreanbarbecuedporkbelly,crabavocadoservedwithtorContinuedonpage71
tillachips,andbacon-wrappedshrimp.
Flavor’sgourmetburgersincludeahalfpoundburgermadefromablendofchuck, shortribandbrisket,andthereisavegetarian versionmakewithblackbeans,greenpeppers, onionsandspices.
