The Fruits of Her Labor Virginia Pappas combines her love for carving with the culinary arts to create edible masterpieces WRITTEN BY ALISON CLARY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT L. GURSKY
30 COASTAL STYLE / July-August 2019
CUTTING EDGE: VIRGINIA PAPPAS IS A NATURAL AT CARVING FRUIT. HER CREATIONS DISPLAY MORE THAN JUST SUPERIOR TECHNIQUE; THEY ARE LEGITIMATE WORKS OF ART, WITH FOOD AS HER CANVAS.
Committed to protecting those you love.
T
he beauty of food, according to local fruit carver Virginia Pappas, relies just as much on appearance as it does taste. “I always believe you eat with your eyes first,” Pappas said. While a student at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Pappas first recognized her pure love of, and talent for, carving in a puppetryand-marionette class. She found herself excelling whenever she worked with pinewood. “It was a very long and tough process, but I really liked how I could use my hands to bring the wood to life,” Pappas said. After graduating, Pappas ran a successful interior-design company, but that did not keep her from wielding her carving knife in her free time. She continued to develop her carving skills as she created a full portfolio of puppets and figurines. When Pappas stumbled upon an intricately carved fruit display on a cruise ship 25 years ago, it was kismet. She immediately saw fruit carving as an opportunity to combine her love for carving with the culinary arts.
An extra set of eyes on the road and, if need be, an extra foot on the brake when you drive, EyeSight® Driver Assist System with Automatic Pre-Collision Braking is standard on the 2019 Subaru Outback. Just one of the industry-leading safety innovations featured. No wonder Subaru is a leading choice among parents with teen drivers.
Rt. 13 & Winner Blvd., Delmar, MD 410-896-3800 • GatewaySubaru.com
CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 31
Without any sort of formal culinary training, Pappas began experimenting with carving smaller fruits into birds and flowers. Over time, she mastered the ability to transform all sizes and varieties of fruit into larger edible masterpieces. “Fruit is much easier to work with than pinewood. It is much more forgiving,” stated Virginia. Her foodscapes have become the focal points of many local events, such as weddings, baby showers, and other community and family gatherings. Before she brings one of her foodscapes to an event, Pappas meticulously plans her creation to complement the event’s theme. She then spends several hours ensuring each and every detail, including minute engraving, is crafted with exquisite precision. Her final products have
included a wide range of scenery, including Christmas sleighs pulled by reindeer, pirate ships, and floral designs. Through creating her elaborate displays, Pappas brings the fruit to life and gives it personality. While Virginia largely considers her fruit carving to be a hobby and not a business endeavor, she has found a way to use her skills as a way to give back to the community. She has taught several classes to benefit the Ocean City Art League, and she has allowed for private classes to serve as raffle prizes at local charity events. “I believe God gave me the natural ability to carve and draw,” Virginia said. “I always strive to take these skills I was blessed with and use them to give back to the community and help other artists.”

Contemporary Collaboration Three accomplished artists connect to showcase their talents at the Ocean City Center for the Arts WRITTEN BY VICTOR FERNANDES
B
ROOKE ROGERS didn’t have to look far to find talented artists to join him in his first exhibit as the Art League of Ocean City’s inaugural Fellow for Contemporary Art and Community Engagement. The accomplished abstract painter simply turned to longtime fellow Salisbury University art professors Jinchul Kim and Ed Brown. The trio will headline a small group show, titled, “Three Area Painters: Ed Brown, Jinchul Kim and Brooke Rogers,” at the Ocean City Center for the Arts from July 29 to August 31. It serves as the first of several events Rogers will coordinate during his one-year stint at the Art League of Ocean City. “We are three working contemporary artists who are from very different backgrounds. The common thread among us is where we live and how that has influenced our work,” said Rogers, who also plays a key role in an exhibit on abstract painting and sculpting that will include his work in November, as well as a lecture series on modern and contemporary art later this summer and fall. “Not only are they accomplished artists, they have influenced and helped so many people become artists,” Ocean City Center for the Arts executive director Rina Thaler said. “Their work is monumental. I’m really excited to see the synergy that they bring. Each one has his own energy in his artwork.”
BROOKE ROGERS
Rogers grew up in Ocean City and still lives in his childhood home on 28th Street. He has always loved the beach, where he developed his passion for surfing. Still, Rogers looks beyond the beauty he has seen across the Eastern Shore his entire life while creating pieces that have an edge to them — with “very crisp, hard edges,” as he describes them — while providing those who admire his work with the opportunity to form their own perspectives. While choosing pieces that will appear in the show, Rogers said he aspires to have visitors “leave the exhibit and see some part of the world differently than they did before, that someone can see

my work and see some facet of the world a little differently, as if they’re seeing it through the lens of my sensibility.” His work often takes three to six months to complete because constant daydreaming and meticulous preparation lead to multiple layers on the same canvas that are subtly revealed by wiping, scraping and sanding the surface. “My paintings build up,” Rogers said. “That surface has a life and a history to it. I’m looking for what comes to feel like an authentic presence for the painting.” Rogers can’t recall a time when he didn’t paint and draw. A graduate of the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Rogers has spent the past 24 years teaching in Salisbury, where he instructs students that “you can’t rush it. It just takes the time it takes.”
ED BROWN
Brown takes hours, even days, sitting in the same spot on Assateague Island, painting nature as it unfolds in its own time. He cherishes every second of that time, even after two decades of drawing inspiration for his work from Ocean City’s undisturbed beauty, because the self-proclaimed Army brat

enjoyed precious little time living in one place — until moving to the Eastern Shore. Life slows down on those days, said Brown, 60, and “I feel more intricately involved with the landscape and a certain rhythm of the landscape. Marshes getting bigger and smaller, depending on the tides, and the light changes as clouds come in and during sunset. There is such a variety of nature.” A native of the Washington, DC, area, Brown forged an instant connection with Eastern Shore nature and still raves about the movement of the ocean along the horizon and as waves break onto shore, and how the marshes appear to change as the water rises and recedes. “Nature gives me such inspiration in terms of the variety of shapes, light, color and form,” he said. “There is so much to draw inspiration from in this area for someone who does landscapes.” Brown hopes visitors to the exhibit see the beauty all around through his eyes. “I would like there to be some type of visual connection,” he said. “There are some things that can’t be described verbally, and that’s where art comes in.”
JINCHUL KIM Photo by Gregory Poulos
JINCHUL KIM
Kim began painting “like Rembrandt,” as enthusiasts in his native South Korea had declared, at 12 years old. Now 58, Kim shares those early-onset gifts with his students at Salisbury University and others throughout the Eastern Shore. His artistic passion began while playing around his sister’s palettes and oils. His sister was an art teacher at the time, and Kim unofficially became one of her best students. “I started copying Rembrandt and others without taking any lessons,” he recalled. “I was pretty good at it, because people would ask, ‘Which one is real?’” Kim’s artistic talents later blossomed while earning a master’s degree in his homeland and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Now, figurative elements of nature shine through most of his work, much of which, the artist proclaimed, is inspired by Ocean City itself. “We are human beings. We are familiar with people,” Kim said. “Nature, downtown — we all coexist with the surroundings, and I would like people to analyze my work in their own way.”

hat does the hair on your head mean to you? Hairstyles often instill one’s identity and exude their personality. Now imagine looking in the mirror and seeing your hair slowly but very surely find its way into the palms of your hands. This feeling, indescribable to many, is one Victoria Marsh and Esther Stevenson know all too well. At 13, Victoria was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that originated in her bones. After undergoing many treatments, Victoria

eventually began to lose her hair as a side-effect. Just a sophomore in high school at the time, she was worried about the thought of not having her hair. Victoria was given a few random wigs in the hospital, but none seemed to be right. “Victoria never wanted to wear them,” said her mom, Karen. “They just didn’t fit her.” Esther Stevenson is no stranger to the struggle of hair loss either. While grieving the passing of her husband from pancreatic cancer, she was diagnosed with advanced stage-3 ovarian cancer. Subsequent treatments
resulted in Esther’s hair loss. “She wore a baseball cap when she walked outside,” her daughter, Kathy Marshall, said. “It was hard for her because she knew people were looking at her differently.” The negative feelings these proud individuals had toward their appearances and their diseases would not dissipate on their own. Fortunately, there are two talented women in Berlin who are dedicated to restoring the confidence and self-worth of those suffering from traumatic hair loss.

Oh My Hair! (OMH) The Salon is an award-winning salon that provides services such as haircuts, colors, treatments and extensions. While excelling in traditional services, OMH is also the home of the Next Level wig services. Salon co-owner Michele Harrington and senior stylist Amanda Campbell proudly provide customers experiencing dramatic hair loss a customized wig at little to no cost. “It’s truly an honor and a privilege for Amanda and me to be able to spend this quality time with the men, women and children who come to Next Level for help,” Michele said. “We’re really making a difference for them, and that’s so gratifying.” Next Level is also certified by Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit hair donation organization that has been serving children suffering from hair loss throughout North America since 1981. The group provides complimentary wigs to children with cancer. To further the cause, the entire OMH staff donate their time to any client who cuts and donates their hair to Wigs for Kids. Having custom-fit dozens of clients with wigs, Michele and Amanda understood the emotions that Victoria and Esther were dealing with. The pair take tremendous pride in helping each individual reclaim a portion of their identity, and on this day, donated their time to do so for Victoria and Esther. “You could tell how much Victoria loved her new hair,” her mom said. “She posed and took selfies the whole ride home. It was amazing seeing the staff put their hearts in her wig. It was a priority to them.” Kathy said change is noticeable in her mother, too, who “feels like herself again,” and goes out in public without a baseball cap. Many clients, along with Esther and Victoria, find it hard to lose their hair at such a rapid pace. Michele and Amanda make it a priority to make that transition a little bit easier. “It is so much more than just doing hair,” Michele said. “It’s about changing someone’s life.”

KNOW WHERE TO When injury or illness strikes, a visit to the Emergency Department isn’t always necessary
40 COASTAL STYLE / July-August 2019
GO FOR CARE
WHEN A MEDICAL SITUATION ARISES, IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE MOST APPROPRIATE PLACE TO GO FOR CARE: YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN, URGENT CARE OR THE HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.
CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 41
COVER STORY ERE’S A TEST to see if you can tell an urgent healthcare need from an emergency one. Patient X awoke with facial numbness and facial droop. She had no medical history, no injury to her face or head and no dental pain. She did not take any medications on a daily basis. She is experiencing what many recognize as signs of stroke. Patient Y arrives at PRMC’s Emergency Department (ED) in pain, seeking a refill of his chronic pain medications. He tells staff he has an appointment scheduled with his primary care provider in two days. Both of these are actual PRMC Emergency Department cases, but only one of them is an emergency. Can you tell? “Patient X is an emergent visit, because stroke is a medical emergency causing damage to the brain, either through reduced blood flow [ischemic stroke] or by excessive bleeding [hemorrhagic stroke], and if not treated quickly may result in death or permanent disability,” said Sarah Arnett, MS, BSN, RN, CEN, NEA-BC, Executive Director of Nursing at PRMC. “Patient Y could have very easily addressed his need by pre-planning to visit his physician before running out of his medication two days before his office visit.”
PRMC’S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT is the sixth-busiest in Maryland. It’s easy to imagine how removing nearly 30 percent of unnecessary visits would reduce wait times, make the experience less complicated and more manageable for patients with a true emergency, and cut down associated healthcare costs. So what to do? “When we see patients with non-emergent needs who have no primary care provider and/or no insurance, we provide them information about PRMC’s
IS IT REALLY AN EMERGENCY? IN 2018, Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s ED team cared for 91,088 people. Each visit was assigned a score on a severity scale. The 4s and 5s are classified as less urgent or non-urgent. Of those visits, 27 percent of them — 24,767 — were 4s or 5s. These are visits that should have been treated more appropriately at the patient’s doctor’s office, an urgent care center or elsewhere. “From what I’ve heard in the community, many individuals believe that the ED is the right place to go all the time,” said Dr. Kathryn Fiddler, MS, RN, NEBC, Vice President of Population Health at PRMC. “Since we know the majority of ED visits occur during daytime hours, a call to a primary care provider might have prevented a trip to us. Many people come to the ED for things such as toothaches, headaches and back pain, all ailments that can be appropriately treated by a primary care provider.”

Wagner Wellness Van for follow-up care,” said Arnett. “Our ED case managers also help to connect those patients with a doctor in the community or other services that may prevent the need for our services.” PRMC has invested a great deal of energy into developing care coordination to support community members who may need additional support in-between doctors’ visits. “We even have care coordination teams in a great deal of our primary care offices throughout the shore assisting our Medicare population. They partner with CareFirst, Priority Partners and other insurers to help connect patients to appropriate resources in the community,” added Dr. Fiddler.
WHEN IT'S URGENT PRMC HOSPITAL leadership knew when ED visits crested the 90,000 mark that it needed to help those “4s and 5s” find cost-effective, high-quality urgent and occupational health services for acute illnesses and injuries that do not require an emergency department
visit. Urgent care centers, like Your Doc’s In, which the Peninsula Regional Health System partners with at its South Salisbury Boulevard location, were established to complement a hospital’s emergency department. That partnership is about two years old and has had great success. Dr. Walter Gianelle is the CEO of Your Doc’s In. “If you can be put in a car and driven to an ED, I believe

healthcare, physical therapy and specialty referrals. Care coordination happens best in the primary care office.”

“Urgent care can handle a much broader spectrum of illnesses and injuries than just colds and scrapes, including things like chest pain, lacerations, COPD, asthma attacks and orthopedic injuries. The care is of equal quality, cost effective, and most times delivered in a more timely fashion.”
PHYSICIANS IN private practice, urgent care center doctors and at PRMC all agree it’s everyone’s responsibility to be a smart shopper of appropriate healthcare services. “Healthcare premiums continue to climb annually. It impacts us all, and a primary driver is inappropriate use of the emergency department,” said Dr. Gianelle. “We shop for the best deal when buying a car and choose the one that best fits our needs. Essentially, it’s the same when it comes to healthcare. We need to change the community mindset.” Dr. Natesan agrees and believes the office model needs updating. “We need to have a mechanism in each primary care office for ways to assure patients will be seen on the same day when they call for urgent problems, or better, provide walk-ins without calling and after hours and weekend hours,” he said. “As primary care physicians, we need to educate our patients about emergent and non-emergent conditions.” As Dr. Fiddler points out, it’s not the need for care, but rather where. “The important point is that most people need some sort of care; it’s just that all care doesn’t need to occur at a high-cost, high-intensity place like the emergency department.”
RELY ON YOUR DOCTOR ANOTHER OPTION that benefits patients is the one most overlooked: the family doctor. Patients will often say during an ED visit that they “didn’t want to bother their doctor with a call,” but on the contrary, physicians welcome those. “As primary care physicians, we know our patients better and we are in a much better position to take care of their problems. This improves appropriate care, provides continuity of care, avoids unnecessary medication and testing and also allows us a chance to continue to provide preventive care and education,” said Dr. Vel Natesan, a physician in private practice in Salisbury. “We are in a better position to coordinate care between ancillary services like home

Bright White Future After graduating magna cum laude from Temple University’s School of Dentistry, Western Maryland native Dr. Kristen Mazzei brings her talents to Atlantic Dental Cosmetic & Family Dentistry INTERVIEW BY JONATHAN WESTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT L. GURSKY
What made you decide to specialize in general dentistry? One of my favorite things about general dentistry is the opportunity to build and maintain a relationship with my patients over many years. It’s a career that allows a practitioner to get to know all members of a family and care for them throughout their lives. I also enjoy the ability to offer a wide range of procedures for my patients. General dentistry is a balance of science and art, which keeps my days exciting and challenging! What made you decide to practice dentistry on the Eastern Shore? I grew up in Western Maryland and spent the past eight years in Pennsylvania for school. I vacationed on the Shore in the summertime most of my life, and I’ve always been drawn to the beach. My boyfriend grew up in the area and has opened my eyes to all that the Eastern Shore has to offer beyond a vacation destination. For a water and outdoor lover, there’s plenty of ways to stay busy when I’m out of the office. I’m eager to build my career on the Shore.

DR. KRISTEN MAZZEI JOINS DRS. CHRISTOPHER TAKACS, LEFT, AND LAWRENCE MICHNICK AS A PARTNER OF ATLANTIC DENTAL COSMETIC & FAMILY DENTISRY IN WEST OCEAN CITY. SHE IS THE FIRST FEMALE PARTNER IN THE HISTORY OF THE ESTEEMED PRACTICE.
Where did you receive your training? I studied at Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, where I graduated magna cum laude and was a Dean’s Award recipient. In preparation for dental school, I majored in biology and minored in English at Penn State. What gives you the most satisfaction from your work? Dentistry provides me with the incredible opportunity to make people feel better about themselves, by restoring smiles in a comfortable and pain-free environment. It’s always a great feeling to help people build their self-esteem, but it instills even more pride when you handcrafted that smile and your patient’s confidence and well-being have been improved because of it. Other than the standard “diet and exercise” mantra, is there any specific advice you can give people about how to stay out of your office? I don’t want patients to stay out of the office! I look forward to seeing them every six months for their regular dental

“I think the most misunderstood thing about dentistry is that going to the dentist doesn’t have to be painful or scary. Many patients have had bad experiences that discourage them from seeking regular care.”
Is there anything in particular about your field or specialty that you feel tends to be misunderstood by the public? I think the most misunderstood thing about dentistry is that going to the dentist doesn’t have to be painful or scary. Many patients have had bad experiences that discourage them from seeking regular care. Dental appointments can understandably make patients anxious and uncomfortable. The most important thing is to have an open discussion with patients, so we can help them make their appointments more comfortable.
cleanings and checkups. However, the other 363 days of the year are still important. Diet and preventative care are extremely important for oral health. Limiting sugary snacks and beverages, as well as maintaining a thorough homecare regimen of brushing and flossing can keep dental emergencies at bay. Taking care of dental problems when they’re small can prevent larger problems from popping up at the most inopportune time, like during your beach vacation.
Do you have any personal or professional philosophies that you use to help govern your practice of dentistry? When faced with difficult decisions at school, one of my faculty members would ask, “What would you do if this patient were your cousin?” Many dental problems have more than one solution, and sometimes you and the patient need to make a tough decision. I will always treat my patients the same way I would want myself or my family to be treated.

CFES Excels at Connecting People Who Care with Causes That Matter
hings have changed since 1984. The Dow Jones closed that year at 1,211 (that is not a typo). Interest rates were 10.75%. A movie ticket was $2.50; a gallon of gas $1.10. That year, a group of community leaders were planning another kind of change: the
creation of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore — an organization dedicated to “connecting people who care with causes that matter.” In honor of the CFES’ 35th anniversary, here are the remembrances of a few who have been involved and impacted along the way.
THE PLANNER
Tom Hershey, Founder, Past Board Member, Investment Committee Chair
Retired businessman Hershey is a CFES founder, chair (1998-99) and “probably the longest-serving member we have. I think I set a record.” Raised by parents who believed in giving back, he was drawn to the idea of a community foundation to touch as many people as possible, both giving and receiving. The founders believed in the value of a foundation, but we also knew it would come down to getting the right balance of people involved. When we began, we could only afford a part-time executive director, so having a motivated board was critical. Looking back, one of the most valuable things we did was create the investment committee to assure the foundation’s growth. We also picked the Mason Companies to manage the assets in 1999. These careful steps have created a legacy that has continued over all these years.
50 COASTAL STYLE / July-August 2019
Tom Hershey with his grandson, Oliver
THE VOLUNTEER
Jan Perdue, Philanthropist and 12-Year Board Member
While known for her philanthropy, Perdue also gives back to the community with her time and talents. During her first term as a CFES board member, she helped to lead the charge for the Perdue-Kresge Challenge, which leveraged a $2 million gift from the Kresge Foundation and a $4 million challenge from Frank and Mitzi Perdue. Nineteen local nonprofits became eligible for a 1:1 fundraising match to build endowments that would support their work in perpetuity. By 2005, more than $12 million had been raised for endowments at CFES. Today, Perdue continues to serve on the CFES board of directors and brings her time and energy to various grant committees that fund projects throughout the region. Jim and Jan Perdue
We moved back to Delmarva in 1983, and I heard about CFES through my in-laws. I became involved on grants committees — CFES has their finger on the pulse of the community and serves a lot of people. I learned that while you might think you know what problems are in the community, it’s an eye-opening experience to see what the needs really are. It was spectacular to be involved in something this impactful with the Community Foundation. The process is incredible.
As an individual, I don’t have enough time to do all the research about community needs. CFES can supply that. As a donor, CFES will do whatever you want it to do. This allows donors to give to where the needs and interests are. And you don’t need to have big bucks. You can donate time, too. No matter how you give of yourself, it can be incredibly rewarding.
THE CATALYST
Nancy Howard, President of the Board, Ocean City Museum Society, Inc.
In 2015, Howard, who had been a member of the Ocean City Council for 12 years, heard of Giving Tuesday and thought it could be good for the Shore. She was right. Led by CFES, the first year it raised $7,430 for 26 nonprofits; in 2018, more than $171,000 was raised for 99 nonprofits, helping many organizations transform their fundraising. I’ve been in Ocean City for 45 years. I retired 15 years ago and had nothing but time. I thought the best use of it was joining boards. Change does not always come quickly to nonprofits. Some groups I worked with — like the Ocean City Paramedics Association — have had funds at CFES for years. CFES was instrumental in starting funds for several others I had worked with. I had seen Giving Tuesday online and asked Erica [Joseph, CFES president] if they were participating. We put together a group of people, and it took off quickly. I didn’t know it would be as huge as it’s become. Bringing in CFES was a real plus, with all their connections, technologies and the systems in place. And they are some of the nicest people I have ever met.
Nancy Howard with Maryland Governor Larry Hogan
What I think is amazing is this: CFES may not always be able to see the next need before it gets here, but by God when they do, they will jump in with both feet and do it 100%. CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 51
THE PARTNER
Rina Thaler, Director, The Art League of Ocean City
Founded in 1963, the Art League of Ocean City began to showcase local artists. Today, it offers classes, exhibits, scholarships and more. Over 15 years, Thaler has served as president, chair of the fundraising committee and now as its director. I reached out to CFES in 2008 about fundraising for our arts center. They helped us with strategic planning and organizing our capital campaign and encouraged us to take many of the CFES trainings. We established an endowment fund. We knew donors would be more comfortable putting money at CFES because they are Rina Thaler a trusted name. When we opened in 2013, we needed grant money for programs, and CFES helped through a variety of funds. They helped us with establishing scholarships, and when we started a Legacy Partner Society for people who want to sustain us after they pass, CFES advised us on that, too. CFES has been there every step of the way. I tell other
organizations: “You won’t get from the starting line to the finish line in a year or two.” It takes time, and CFES can be a resource in so many ways. Take advantage of all the educational aspects first. The other parts will follow.
THE RECIPIENT
Maya Batson, Salisbury University, Class 2019
Batson graduated from Salisbury University this spring with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She is teaching pre-K summer school and in the fall will teach first grade at Pocomoke Elementary School. She’s returning to SU next spring, to work on her master’s in administration and plans to earn her doctorate. I grew up in Pocomoke in a single-parent home. I knew I wanted to do everything I could to take the weight off my mom and me financially by maintaining good grades and earning scholarships — and I applied for as many as I possibly could. Superintendent of My principal thought of the Pat & Dick Hazel Schools for Worcester Minority Scholarship, administered by CFES. She County Louis H. Taylor knew my lifetime goal has been to be a teacher. The and Maya Batson scholarship was for a minority student who wanted to go into the field of education. I wrote the essay, collected the letters or recommendations, won it and then kept it all four years. Receiving this scholarship really aided me in knowing that my community and I couldn’t be more thankful. Now, my first job is taking me believed in me as much as I (and my family) believed in back to where I grew up, where I can invest in the community myself. It helped me accomplish the goals I set for myself, that invested in me.

Erica Joseph, President, CFES Joseph began her career in nonprofit work. She came to CFES in 2003 as program officer. In 2015, she was named president. Leading a team of 10 professionals, she balances the desires of donors, needs of the community and the management of more than $120 million in assets. Before my interview with CFES, I had never heard of a community foundation, but it seemed exciting to be on the other side of nonprofits: Instead of asking for money, I could help invest it and empower donors. David Michaud was president then. He had a program/ grant-making lens, and he was focused on making it easier for organizations to access all CFES offered. When Spicer Bell came, he continued to expand the structure. He made us more visible, opened our new building and offered more trainings. In my job, I think a lot about growth. Leadership is important, but over time, the team has become more diverse and dedicated, more connected to different parts of the community. No one sees this as “just a job.” It’s our donors who drive so much of what is possible.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
Restoring History After suddenly going dark in 1978, the Fenwick Island lighthouse has been rescued by the state of Delaware and the New Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, which is entrusted with protecting the local icon’s legacy Written By BRIAN SHANE | Photography by SCOTT KRALLER
70 COASTAL STYLE / July-August 2019
T
THE FENWICK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE HAD GUIDED MARINERS FOR 120 UNINTERRUPTED YEARS BEFORE THE U.S. COAST GUARD DECOMMISSIONED IT. TODAY, IT IS BEING ADMINISTERED BY TWO DESCENDENT’S OF ONE OF THE LIGHTHOUSE’S ORIGINAL ASSISTANT LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS.
he lighthouse at Fenwick Island had been guiding midAtlantic mariners without interruption for nearly 120 years, when, in the winter of 1978, it suddenly went dark. Without warning, the Coast Guard had decommissioned the site. They disassembled the original lighthouse lens, packed it up and shipped it off to some government attic for surplus. And nobody seemed to care. “No one really took a general interest in it, except certain citizens,” said Tracey Lewis, with the advocacy group New Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. “No one took care of it. It was historic property, but nobody really cared. They just sold it.” Today, the lighthouse keeper’s home — also sold for “surplus” at the time — is back under state control and in the middle of a major renovation that will restore it to its VictorianGothic glory. What’s more, the reconditioned property will be leased to the New Friends, a local group of champions who took it upon themselves to protect the lighthouse and its legacy. Lewis, 55, and her mother, Winnie Lewis, 76, aren’t just enthusiastic history buffs. For them, the lighthouse is literally part of their family history: They’re descendants of a former assistant lighthouse keeper, William Pepper, who fathered 10 children and was grandfather to many more. Much of the native Fenwick-area population, they say, traces its roots to the Pepper progeny. This makes the Lewises another link in the chain of generations of lighthouse keepers and their families who kept watch over the tower, their community and the sea itself. You can find mother and daughter at the lighthouse on weekends, cheerfully opening the place up for tourists, and commingling their stories about Fenwick history with old family tales — like how Winnie’s grandmother was known to gather children in a horsedrawn wagon and take them to school. “When I was a kid,” Winnie Lewis recalled, “when you came off the Fenwick bridge, it was a dirt road that
came down here. No trailers until the ’50s. It was marsh, shrubs, farmland, pine trees and lots of ’em. It just used to be a tiny little quiet place.” She also believes it was the lighthouse itself that lit the spark of community in what was once an isolated, desolate place. “It was really rough to live here. The people who were here were very poor. There is more of a story here than just a lighthouse that blinks.” The whale-oil lamp first flickered from atop the Fenwick Island Lighthouse on August 1, 1859, sending a beacon visible 15 miles out to sea. After 160 years, remarkably, the lighthouse tower itself has never been altered. Even all 112 stairs on the cast-iron staircase are original — but nobody gets to traverse them anymore, for safety reasons. In the early 19th century, there was no lighthouse to guide vessels over the 60 miles of Atlantic shoreline, including the dangerous Fenwick Shoals between Cape Henlopen and Assateague Island. But in 1855, the U.S. Lighthouse Board reported to Congress “a lighthouse in the vicinity of Fenwick’s Island will serve to guide vessels from the southern port.” Records show it cost $23,748 to build the lighthouse and keeper’s residence, or about $700,000 in today’s dollars. The first keeper, John Smith, was paid a government salary of $400 a year. Like many coastal Delaware communities in the 19th century, Fenwick Island had once been home to Christian camp meetings. Local families came from neighboring towns like Roxana, Dagsboro, Selbyville and Frankford, to spend summers at the beach in worship. They crafted makeshift cottages, not much better than tents, and circled their temporary homes around a tabernacle for all-day Bible study. There was no electricity, no running water. “It was like a little village,” Winnie Lewis said. “They had a place where you could buy hamburgers; they had an ice cream place. My husband’s grandmother played the organ at the tabernacle some Sundays.” CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 71
Historically, early travelers headed east into Fenwick had to cross a muddy culvert over a flimsy wagon bridge. While today it’s a wide and navigable canal flowing under Route 54, beside Harpoon Hanna’s restaurant, back then locals just called it “the ditch.” Winnie Lewis recalled its origin story. “It was a ditch,” she said. “They had cows here, and they would escape to the other side. People got tired of chasing them back and forth. They started digging, and they made the ditch wider. You had the current from the big bay to the little bay, and that made it bigger.” The lighthouse station once covered 10 acres, but the government whittled down that acreage over the years, by land transfers and private sales. All that remains of the original federal property is the lighthouse and the home now under renovation. The facility has been on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) since 1979.
Locals rallied in the early 1980s, not only to give ownership of the lighthouse to the state of Delaware but also to re-illuminate the light itself. Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse (led by another William Pepper descendant, W. Paul Pepper) successfully lobbied state and local officials. Delaware took over the facility, and its original third-order Fresnel lens was taken back out of government storage and replaced atop the 89-foot-tall tower. With it, the Fenwick Light shone again, in 1982 — though the beam that now shines intermittently from a 660-watt bulb is purely decorative.
THOUGH THE ORIGINAL THIRDORDER FRENSEL LENS IS BACK IN PLACE ATOP THE 89-FOOT TOWER OF THE FENWICK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE, THE 660-WATT BULB THAT SHINES FROM IT NOW IS PURELY DECORATIVE. THE PROJECT’S NEXT PHASE WILL BE A GUT-RENO OF THE LIGHTHOUSE'S INTERIOR, INCLUDING BRAND-NEW PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. THE RENDERING ABOVE SHOWS THE ARCHITECTURAL CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE LIGHTHOUSE, WHICH WERE SUBMITTED FOR APPROVAL IN OCTOBER 1857.
72 COASTAL STYLE / July-August 2019
The project’s next phase, which has not yet been funded, is interior renovation, starting with a design stage. Lynn Riley, a planner and cultural asset manager with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, which is overseeing the project, expects the interior will be gutted, and crews would replace systems like electrical and plumbing. When they’re done, the lighthouse keeper’s home will be not just an exhibit of life in the 19th century but also the new home of the New Friends of the Fenwick Lighthouse. THE ART OF LOCAL LENDING KARI STORY Branch Manager
FIRST HOME MORTGAGE 443-614-6286 / KariStory.com What’s the greatest job in Ocean City? Lifeguard? Nope. Bayside bartender? Try again. For mortgage lender Kari Story, she thinks it’s hers: helping people fulfill their goals of being able to finally afford a home at the beach. “Many people have been coming to Ocean City their whole lives,” she said. “To see their faces at closing and know that they’ve finally reached their lifelong dream of having their own place here, is so rewarding. It’s part of what I enjoy about living at the beach and helping people purchase properties.” What makes it even sweeter for her clients at First Home Mortgage is the awardwinning service she provides, striving to make perfectly painless what could be a tedious and agonizing process. Firstly, folks dreaming of that second home or condo at the beach should know that they won’t have the same financing options they probably had when buying their year-round home, such as FHA or rural housing loans. At the beach, not only are those financing options for a second home mostly limited to conventional financing, buyers will also need more cash up-front. Good thing Story knows how to navigate those murky waters. “The biggest thing clients are surprised by is the fact that they need a larger down payment. Buyers often assume the down payment needed will be similar to their primary home, when in fact you do have to put 10 percent down,” she said. Some buyers may think they’re better off using their hometown lender, but those out-of-area lenders don’t know beach mortgages like First Home Mortgage. They have years of lending experience in the Ocean City condo market. “Our niche here at the beach is condominiums,” Story said. “Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are very specific about which projects they’ll take and which they

“Many people have been coming to Ocean City their whole lives. To see their faces at closing and know that they’ve finally reached their lifelong dream of having their own place here, is so rewarding. It’s part of what I enjoy about helping people purchase properties.” — Kari Story won’t. We, as lenders, have the knowledge to navigate those project guidelines.” Story and her team are familiar with the process. They have been lending locally long enough to know many of the players involved — condo-management companies, the insurance agencies — and have the procedure streamlined, meaning clients typically will only need to provide minimal documentation in regards to the project approval portion. So far, Story said the housing market in 2019 is still going strong. Interest rates are coming down from 2018 levels; inventory is
low; things are moving quickly. That means buyers are making quicker decisions. “We have buyers who are literally waiting for units to become available in specific buildings and jumping on them,” Story said. Story and her team at First Home Mortgage pledge they’ll go above and beyond, “to make their clients’ process as smooth as possible, because, let’s face it, it’s stressful buying a property,” she said. “We want to give our clients five-diamond service so that they have a truly wonderful buying experience.”

AVERY HALL INSURANCE GROUP 410-742-5111 / AveryHall.com How do the insurance needs of condominium and townhouse owners differ from those of a single-family residence? Several policies for building and contents are used to cover condos. Homes/townhomes are protected by only a single policy for building and contents. For condos, one policy is the master association policy, to cover the common elements and the original “building.” The condo bylaws will describe what the association policy covers and what the unit owners will need to cover. In addition to the master policy, the unit owners will also purchase a policy to cover any improvements they make to their unit, as well as their contents located inside of the unit (to name just some of the coverages). Another essential coverage needed by the unit owner is loss assessment. It will cover an assessment made
76 COASTAL STYLE / July-August 2019
to them by the association for a covered loss, and in some cases, the master policy deductible if a claim originated from their unit. What are some considerations often overlooked in a homeowner’s insurance policy? Examine your policy for separate deductibles, for items such as wind/hail or hurricane. Many policies have a flat deductible of typically $1,000. Several policies also add a separate deductible (check the fine print), and the consumer is responsible for sometimes paying $10,000 or more out of their pocket before their policy coverage kicks in. Another item to consider is wearing and tear. The home insurance policy does not cover normal wear and tear. Consumers should investigate home warranty products to cover their major systems, like HVAC, for this.
How does Avery Hall evaluate and provide homeowners policy recommendations to their clients. Each client speaks with an experienced account manager to discuss their individual needs and life scenario. Everyone has different needs and different levels of assets to protect. The discussion to determine the coverage needs may take 20-30 minutes, which may seem long, but it’s crucial to be sure we’ve protected what each client has worked so hard to secure. Our team is passionate about what they do!

Open and Shut Case East Coast Shutters not only offers its clients a frontline of defense against hurricanes, they also provide home security benefits and added protection from the summer heat WRITTEN BY VICTOR FERNANDES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT KRALLER
P
owerful hurricanes don’t need to roll across the Eastern Shore for George Pfaller to appreciate having hurricane roll shutters on his home. Pfaller understands their seemingly limitless value each time he lowers his shutters just enough to eliminate the setting sun’s glare while watching television. “There’s a variety of reasons why I personally like them as a lifestyle product,” said Pfaller, and protecting waterfront homes from the wraths of

storms packing winds reaching 140 miles per hour is merely one of them. Pfaller doesn’t own waterfront property, but installing hurricane-rated products at his home was the right choice. So was choosing East Coast Shutters & Awnings to handle the job. First of all, he’s its vice president. But the company based in Selbyville also has grown into the Eastern Shore’s leader in storm-protection services, through the development, production and installation of rolling shutters and
accordion shutters. East Coast Shutters also offers top-quality retractable awnings and window awnings, as well as solar and insect screens. “They’re pretty much the whole game in town. They are really popular,” said Leanne Glueck, whose rolling shutters from East Coast Shutters & Awnings provide her family’s oceanfront home in Bethany Beach with a much needed layer of protection from Mother Nature’s wrath. “You have no choice. When you’re on the ocean, you need them,” Glueck said, “and I think they’ve done a great job.” Along with providing a barrier from storms, products from East Coast Shutters make homes more energyefficient by naturally cooling homes without the need to overwork air conditioners that inflate electrical bills.

“There are probably as many roll shutters sold in Phoenix, Arizona, as there are in the entire Delmarva region for a completely different reason,” Pfaller said, “and that is to keep houses cool. Their air conditioner isn’t working as hard all day long, because their house is staying cool.” Their products also offer business owners with a level of protection from thefts. “We’ve evolved a lot of our products into security products. That’s really a lot of the evolution that’s taking place with our company,” Pfaller said. “We are doing much more security than we were 10 years ago.” The products East Coast Shutters & Awnings offer their customers have evolved greatly, especially technologically, since the company opened operations at its Sussex County location two decades ago. “Today, you

East Coast Shutters & Awnings installed 24 remote-control-operated rolling shutters at Loretta Ehrler’s Bethany Beach home, while Larry Katz has 20 motorized rolling shutters at his home in the same town. “We’ve been dealing with those same customers

“Clients place a lot of responsibility and trust in my care to design their homes” Gail said. “It’s a huge commitment, both from a financial and longevity perspective, so it’s my job to create something that is timeless. My goal is that my clients are happy living there today and 15 years from now.” One of her latest projects is a South Bethany residence that was in the framing stages when she met homeowners Jim and Hanne Crystal. The Crystals were referred to Gail by a local Realtor who worked with Gail previously. “We had multiple in-depth conversations, so I could learn more about their likes and dislikes, their level of entertaining and if visiting children and grandchildren needed to be included in their home plans,” Gail said. “A benefit of our large showroom is that we were able to see multiple styles, manufacturers and fabrics we showcase, allowing us to immediately identify items that matched the collective conceptual vision for their home.” Gail transformed all of her gathered information into an impressive design-plan that included a variety of floor-plan concepts, complete with furniture packages and accompanying space-management perspectives, flooring and finish recommendations, door styles, multiple performance fabric selections and suggested color palates. Thrilled with her presentation, the Crystals commissioned Gail and Creative Concepts to lead the design of their beach home. Together, they traveled to various galleries, to make creative and unique selections, including Ferguson Kitchen & Bath in Annapolis, The Tile Market in Lewes and OC Floor & Home Gallery in West Ocean City. Complementing tones of grays, whites and creams combine to create a sophisticated coastal atmosphere throughout the home, with accent colors of navy, chocolate and turquoise purposefully placed to provide additional warmth. “It’s a very soothing and appealing palate,” Gail said. “There is also flexibility in the design, as well, which adds to its longevity. We collectively wanted a welcoming and userfriendly design, and I believe we accomplished that goal.”

Family owned and operated for 46 years, by three generations of the Lednum family, Creative Concepts features an extensive selection of quality furniture, accessories and window fashions at their Ocean View and Lewes showrooms. Gail utilized serviceable upholstery options from Larren Grey and refined furniture combinations from Lexington, Bungalow Five, Bernhardt and Lane Venture. As a Hunter Douglas Centurion Gallery dealer, Gail had access to the renowned window treatment company’s latest styles and incorporated attractive and functional selections throughout the residence. She also selectively incorporated shore-inspired artwork and accessories to provide additional points of interest, color and style. “This is a design that you could take anywhere, north or south,” Gail said. “It’s light, airy and inviting.” As this nine-month project neared completion, Gail said she couldn’t help but feel the excitement that accompanies the completion of each of her home designs and credits her support team that also plays an integral role in each project. “It’s a long process, moving through the various phases of construction, and each step builds your excitement because you can start to see the design vision come to life. In the end, it’s extremely fulfilling to have the ability to satisfy our clients and have the end result exceed any expectation that we ever could have imagined. The ultimate reward, in addition to developing a professional relationship with my clients, is that we become personal friends, too.”
CREATIVE CONCEPTS’ GAIL LEDNUM SPEARHEADED A NINE-MONTH PROJECT FOR THE CRYSTALS THAT PRODUCED A RESULT THAT IS BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND TIMELESS. ACCORDING TO GAIL: “THIS IS A DESIGN THAT YOU COULD TAKE ANYWHERE, NORTH OR SOUTH. IT'S LIGHT, AIRY AND INVITING.”

The Friends of the South Coastal Library’s 28th annual Beach and Bay Cottage Tour offers a unique glimpse inside select Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island homes
T
he Glueck family loves to entertain at their beautiful oceanfront home in Bethany Beach. With five bedrooms, six-and-a-half bathrooms and one breathtaking view after another inside and out, the more the merrier in their home away from their suburban Washington, DC, home. But on July 24-25, opening their doors to anyone and everyone reaches new heights for Leanne and her husband, Ken. On the final Wednesday and Thursday in July, the Glueck family anticipates having approximately 2,000 people pass through their home as part of the Friends of the South Coastal Library’s 28th annual Beach and Bay Cottage Tour. The popular event, which benefits the Kent Street library in Bethany Beach, features a tour through 10 homes located from North Bethany south to Fenwick Island, west to Ocean View and east to the Atlantic Ocean for everyone with a $35 ticket in hand and visions of building or renovating their dream Eastern Shore home. “I really enjoy decorating, and I really enjoy picking things out. So, I can appreciate people coming through the homes and getting ideas,” said Leanne, who gained valuable ideas while touring other homes constructed by Bethany Beach builder Mark Dieste, of Mark Dieste Design Build LLC. Homeowners don’t apply to be a tour stop during this popular twoday event. Homes are chosen based on recommendations from builders, designers and past tour participants and visitors. Homes on display aren’t all large and oceanfront. “Big, little, old, new, on the water, not on the water — we try to get a little bit of everything during the tour,” said tour chairperson Kathy Green, who has volunteered her time on the tour committee for eight years and her own home for the tour in 2011. CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 89
“If we had all big beautiful homes on oceanfront, then you lose that personality that we want to keep with the tour. We have an original Nanticoke this year, which is very cool.” Tickets for the tour, which sells out every year, are available at South Coastal Library or online at beachandbaycottagetour.com. Guests receive copies of Coastal Style, a canvas bag and tour book featuring descriptions of homes, and programs at the library that benefit from the fundraiser. Guests will drive, bike — and in the case of the Gluecks’ home, take a bus — from home to home in Fenwick Island, South Bethany, Bethany Beach, North Bethany, Salt Pond, Bethany Lakes and Ocean View. They will leave with decorating ideas, and the always-popular paint samples from each home visitors ask for each year. In-between, Green said, “We would like people to feel welcome in someone’s home. Our purpose is to give our tour attendees the flavor of the different types of homes in the south coastal area.” Not all recommended homes are selected. Some aren’t ready to be unveiled in time and have to wait a year to earn that distinction. But the homeowners selected have the opportunity to share their unique venues. Leanne said she wants to showcase the intricate details of her home, decorated by Susan Romans of Rehoboth Beach. “It’s good business for them,” she said. “I just want to do it for them because I was so grateful for the process. We’ve never had such an easy great process. We had such a good experience with them.” The tour committee already has begun preparing for the July 2020 tour. But they also look forward to what’s in store for this year. “It’s a wonderful event for a very worthy cause,” Green said. 28TH ANNUAL BEACH AND BAY COTTAGE TOUR When: July 24-25 Host: Friends of the South Coastal Library Tour Stops: Homes in Fenwick Island, South Bethany, Bethany Beach, North Bethany, Salt Pond, Bethany Lakes and Ocean View Proceeds benefit South Coastal Library

Katie Winnington of C&E Furniture discusses her design inspirations, family life, the future of beach style and more Interview by JONATHAN WESTMAN Portrait by MEGHAN SHUPE
C&E Furniture has evolved from a furnishings showroom to now include a full-service interior-design component. How did this come about, and what services do you offer? It really was a natural evolution that we should start offering full home-design services. So many of our projects are new construction, and as our projects became larger and more involved, it just made sense that we should be there with our clients from the very beginning. In the last four years, we have expanded to include a full-service design division to our company. How would you describe your style? I love mixing organic and modern elements while combining textures and adding small nods to the coast. Do you have any rules? I like to design by the rule of balance. Symmetry is so important, and it’s really how a room reaches its maximum potential. I like to apply it to every aspect of what I do, whether it’s scale, color or texture, I think having a balance is really what makes a great design. How do you combine beauty and function? The best part of being an interior designer is finding that perfect balance between the two. My job is about finding out how people live and function in a space. The part I love is
In many ways, the steady ascension of C&E Furniture into a sophisticated, boutique home-enhancement company is a direct reflection of principal designer/buyer Katie Winnington herself. A member of the American Society of Interior Designers with more than 10 years’ experience, Winnington has successfully and consistently used her extensive training and creative vision to propel the third-generation family-owned business into a multi-awardwinning furnishings showroom and state-of-the-art design center.

Tell us how your family, including your son, play a role in C&E Furniture. Having my family, especially my son in my life, a new baby on the horizon, and being able to add that layer to everything I do is so incredible. It makes everything worth it. When I’m at work, I’m totally focused on what I’m doing. When I get home in the evenings, I turn my phone off, and I stop checking emails, so I can be totally devoted to my family. I believe having the separation between work and family is incredibly important and helps me stay focused on what’s in front of me. What projects are you working on at the moment? I’m really lucky to be working on some really amazing projects right now. There are some new construction projects that are really close to being completed, that I’ve been involved with for almost a year, all the way to some accessory
how I can make it beautiful, too. It can happen in so many different ways, but when it just clicks, and the pieces fall in place, that is definitely the best part! What inspires you today? I’m a sponge; I soak up ideas and inspiration from so many different places. There are so many talented interior designers out there, who are doing some really amazing work, to the people I work with and my family and being able to live where we do. I don’t ever feel like I have a shortage of inspiring ideas.
C&E'S FENWICK ISLAND SHOWROOM IS A DESTINATION THAT PROVIDES CUSTOMERS WITH A NEW WAY TO SHOP FOR HOME FURNISHINGS. THE SHOWROOM, FOR EXAMPLE, IS METICULOUSLY DESIGNED TO OFFER AN INSPIRING ARRAY OF MANUFACTURERS THAT CAN APPEAL TO THE BROADEST SPECTRUM OF INDIVIDUAL TASTES.
Were you artistic as a child? I was. Pablo Picasso has a famous quote that “Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist when you grow up.” I think about that a lot, and I think about how lucky I am to be able to spend my days working in a profession that allows me to be creative every day.
and staging projects. What I love is that they are all so different, and the mix of having them all at the same time makes for some really creative designs.
C&E'S KATIE WINNINGTON HAS AN INDIVIDUAL APPROACH THAT CONTINUES TO SERVE HER AND HER CLIENTS WELL. SHE LIKES TO MIX ORGANIC AND MODERN ELEMENTS, WITH SUBTLE HOMAGES TO THE COASTAL LIFESTYLE, ALL WHILE STRIVING FOR BALANCE AND SYMMETRY.
CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE  95
What is your favorite room of the house to design and why? The kitchen is my favorite room. It’s where everyone comes together; it’s where you entertain; it’s where you make meals for your family; it’s where life happens. A lot of functionality goes into the design of a kitchen; being able to add unique design elements on top of that definitely makes it my favorite room in a home.
KATIE SEES THE FUTURE OF BEACH STYLE AS AN OPEN PROPOSITION WITH AN EVOLUTION TO MORE MONOCHROMATIC SPACES AND TEXTURES AS OPPOSED TO THE UTILIZATION OF COLORS.
If you had to choose 3 words to describe your ideal client, what would they be? Trusting. Excited. Open. Do you have any morning routines or rituals that help start your day? Having a 2-year-old means I’m game for anything in the morning, but it usually involves making breakfast and a couple episodes of Paw Patrol. Where do you go to relax with your family during the summer months? Where do you escape to in the winter? We’re beach people. Any opportunity we have to spend a couple hours there, we’ll take. What’s the future hold for styles at the beach? I think the future of beach style is really open. I am definitely seeing a transition into more monochromatic spaces, whereas in the past they utilized color; now it’s more textures. But I do I think anything is on the table, which I love!

TYLER BUILDING COMPANY RENOVATED THIS OCEAN CITY CONDO FOR CLIENT MICHELE SARRIS, WHICH HAD NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE BEING BUILT IN 1974.

W
HEN Michele Sarris needed an overhaul of her vacation home in Ocean City, she put the word out to friends and family: Got any contractors to recommend? The word came back quickly through the grapevine: You need to call Tyler Building Company. Sarris, a social worker who makes her home in Rockville, needed a substantial renovation to her ocean-block condominium unit in north Ocean City. She plans to move there full-time upon retirement in a few years and wants it completely ready for that day. “It’s my happy place,” Michele said of Ocean City. “I can’t tell you how relaxed I am when I’m down there. I’m going to do it right; I’m going to get what I like; if it costs a little extra, then it costs a little extra.” It turned out to be a complete renovation of her 1,266 sq. ft. unit in the Four Seasons building on Assawoman Drive. Built in 1974, her unit still had its original kitchen and flooring, with only slight updates to the bathrooms. “We’re Italian; we love to cook,” she said. “We had a peninsula; I wanted an island. It just wasn’t working for us. I wanted my island to have electricity. Thank God for everyone at Tyler… they were able to do that.” Under the direction of project manager

“WHEN THEY SAY THEY’RE GOING TO BE THERE, THEY ARE THERE,” SAID MICHELE SARRIS OF TYLER BUILDING CO. “THEY RETURN MY EMAILS. THEY SAID, ‘THIS IS ABOUT YOU; WHATEVER YOU WANT, LET US KNOW, AND WE’LL DO IT.’”
John Santos, the Tyler Building Company crew replaced the ceramic floors and carpeting with stylish vinyl flooring that resembles driftwood. The lighting was redone. The renovation also included allnew cabinets and appliances and remade an existing wet bar. “When they say they’re going to be there, they are there,” Sarris said. “They return my emails. They said, ‘This is about you; whatever you want, let us know, and we’ll do it.’ They never made me feel like I was imposing or asking too much, and he always explained things to me when I had questions.” Will Tyler, who owns Tyler Building Company with his wife, Nikki, says he’s here to provide that top level of service to all clients, no matter how big the job. “Building can be a nuisance, or it can be an experience,” Tyler said. “You find the right builder, and it’s fun: You get to pick all your finishes; you get updates along the way; when options come up, there’s someone there to walk you through it. It’s not just the finished product you enjoy but, overall, just doing the job.”

At the Sarris job, the homeowner had a last-minute request to drastically change the lighting in the unit, which hadn't been part of the original plan. Tyler said that’s typical of any remodel, and he’s happy to accommodate any such request. “That’s the difference between using an experienced remodeling company versus your average contractor that just dabbles in it. We do this day in, day out, and you come to expect those lastminute change requests,” he added. Tyler Building Company also assists homeowners after the renovation is complete, through the guidance from Katrina Collier, the on-staff design expert who helps clients decorate their new home to their exact taste. “It leads into the experience as a whole, where the customer is happy from start to finish. It’s an extra level of service we’re proud to provide,” Tyler added. Michele Sarris says she’s particularly happy with her kitchen backsplash, which has aqua-blue elements with tinges of silver and crystal. She also loves her Cambria Montgomery granite counters, which match the backsplash with similar colors and flecks of brightness. “It looks like the beach,” she said. “I love it. I can’t get over the difference. The place looks so much bigger; it’s great. I’m just really, really happy with it.”

fter spending more than 30 summers and countless off-season weekends in their downtown Ocean City condominium, Pennsylvania residents Jim and Marie Miller decided it was time to explore a new locale for their beach home. The search primarily focused on discovering a residence with quieter and more intimate surroundings to host future visits from their children and grandchildren. The couple soon spotted a stunning three-story home in Bethany Beach. The location was everything they had been looking for: It was situated right near the tranquility of the Indian River Bridge inlet and therefore offered mesmerizing bayline views as a bonus. Jim and Marie quickly realized, however, that the home’s interior was a stark contrast to its airy, coastal surroundings. It embodied an Old World Mediterranean villa with gold accents, yellow walls and a dated design scheme, all of which seemed quite out of place in its seaside setting. After purchasing the home, the couple chose to pursue a full interior renovation and made Perfect Furnishings in Bethany Beach their first stop. “Once we saw their amazing coastal showroom, we knew we had come to the right place,” said Jim. They quickly enlisted the help of Perfect Furnishings mother-daughter duo, Tisha Buchanan and Cortney Thompson, to transform their new residence. To begin the project, they had an initial consultation, where Jim and Marie explained their visions for the home. “We knew we wanted lots of blue hues and a peaceful, coastal vibe,” Marie said. Tisha and Cortney knew exactly what needed to be done to bring their clients’ dreams to life. They quickly got to work and oversaw the execution of every renovation detail, down to the paint color and decorative accents. Tisha also called upon her network of local contractors to carry out the other aspects of the renovation, including painters, carpenters and flooring professionals. “We have longstanding relationships with many local contractors, and using these relationships really helped to streamline the renovation and reduce the overall cost of the project,” Tisha said.

COMPLETED IN JUST UNDER SIX MONTHS, THE END RESULT OF THE MILLERS’ FULL INTERIOR MAKEOVER IS STUNNING. FROM AN OYSTER-SHELL CHANDELIER TO CORAL-PATTERNED CHAIRS AND OTTOMANS, THE SPACE IS UNRECOGNIZABLE FROM WHAT IT HAD BEEN.
Because he runs a commercial contracting company from his primary residence in Pennsylvania, Jim especially appreciated the benefits of using this consolidated approach. “Everyone working in coordination really made the process easier, and the quality of the work that each provided was superb,” Jim said. The renovation was completed in just under six months, and the transformation is jaw-dropping. In fact, the five-bedroom, four-full-bath home is almost entirely unrecognizable now. Every detail, from the oyster-shell chandelier to the coralpatterned chairs and ottomans, expresses a relaxing, open vibe that is fitting for its waterfront environment. “We lightened everything up with coastal blues, and we made sure to complement the natural light, which really maximized the space,” said Tisha. The Millers are once again excited to host family and friends and make the most of their new beach residence. “The entire Perfect Furnishings team was well-seasoned and easy to work with, and they really listened to everything we had to say,” said Marie. “Our beautiful beach home is a reflection of their talents.”

BAYSIDE ESCAPE: YARD DESIGNS CRAFTED AN OUTDOOR-LIVING OASIS FOR THIS BERLIN HOMEOWNER THAT FEATURES AN OUTDOOR KITCHEN, PIZZA OVEN, FIREPLACE, FIREPIT AND OTHER AMENITIES WEAVED THROUGHOUT AN EXQUISITE ARRAY OF NATURAL BLUESTONE AND BRICK.

ne of Yard Designs, Inc.’s latest timeless creations is as breathtakingly beautiful as the panoramic views it offers of the converging Newport and Sinepuxent Bays. Bryan LeCompte, owner of the 33-year-old landscaping design company in Salisbury, crafted a fully equipped outdoor-living oasis at a waterfront home in Berlin that features a fireplace, firepit, outdoor kitchen, pizza oven and various other amenities weaved throughout an exquisite array of natural bluestone and brick. The homeowners desired a space that would serve as an extension of their home that would feature many of its design traits while complementing, but not overshadowing, the picturesque bay views they enjoy. This is where they envisioned quiet days and memorable moments together with family and friends.
“From the very beginning of this project, the homeowners and our team established that trust was the most important dynamic of all,” LeCompte said. “Open lines of communication are key. The relationship we build with our clients brings each project together. Everyone has to be unified to understand and trust the process. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” The project transitioned to details that were anything but minor, including the critical selection of materials required to withstand the test of time. LeCompte prefers natural materials, especially when selecting the style of stone headlining the project. In this instance, bluestone was the choice for the patio, which transitioned into the bluestone and brick used for the fireplace. Colonial stack with bluestone treads were used for the firepit and pizza oven. The homeowners selected ipe, a dense Brazilian hardwood, for the mantle above the fireplace to match the home’s deck. The outdoor kitchen was constructed with brick, with ipe for its doors and ceiling.

Ocean City
Dreams Come True In April 2019, Ryan Haley and Atlantic Shores Realty found us the perfect waterfront property in Ocean City... but our beach story began many years before. As native Marylanders, we grew up on or around the water, but Ocean City always seemed to transcend anywhere else. Our families would spend summer vacation each year in Ocean City, so it holds a special place in our hearts because of all the happy memories through the years. As children, we had fun with our parents and siblings — digging for sand crabs, playing in the waves, and having boardwalk adventures. As young adults, we worked at the beach for several summers and enjoyed the Ocean City nightlife. Years later, we got engaged in Ocean City. And now that we have our own young family, we hope that the sights, smells and sounds of the beach stay with our children always. Atlantic Shores Realty found us a beautiful place at the beach where we can bring our family together to create lasting memories and experiences, and celebrate our love for one another in our favorite place on earth... Ocean City, Maryland.

TIME AND TIDE: BRYAN LECOMPTE POINTS OUT TO ALL HIS CLIENTS THAT ELABORATE PROJECTS LIKE THESE REQUIRE LOTS OF TIME AND EQUAL PATIENCE IN ORDER TO CREATE A SETTING THAT WILL WITHSTAND THE TEST OF TIME.
“There’s only so many materials you could use in this setting to complement this beautiful home,” LeCompte said. “It’s stunning and will look even better over time. Fifty years from now, even 100 years from now, people will come back here and say, ‘We don’t need to change anything.’” The project also included a shell-covered driveway and new walkways leading to the front of the home and to the dock leading out onto the bay, as well as low-voltage lighting and enhanced landscaping, which added to this impressively designed landscaping project. “This becomes natural art when it’s not being used for its intended purpose,” LeCompte said, “and it still looks fantastic.” Truly picturesque landscapes such as these can’t be rushed. That’s the message LeCompte routinely shares with clients, as it takes many stages to transform a concept into a reality.

“Planning ahead for a project of size should take place the year prior, even two or three seasons beforehand, to establish a timeline and goals,” LeCompte said. “Choices, materials, ordering, designs, layout, permits, regulations — it all takes time. Proper planning eliminates mistakes and ultimately results in a finished project everyone loves.” This setting, much like all other projects LeCompte and his team create, begins with forging a relationship with clients to appreciate their architectural tastes and lifestyle. That’s where trust meets LeCompte’s ability to bring practicality, function and exquisite aesthetic appeal to life.
