Gather ’Round THE INTERNATIONAL BEACHCOMBERS CONFERENCE IS COMING TO ANNAPOLIS
B
EACHCOMBERS, REJOICE! The 2020 International Beachcombers Conference (IBC) is coming March 23-29 to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Philip Merrill Center, outside of Annapolis. The 7-day, 6-night event features expeditions to different beaches, museum visits, tutorials, films, small discussion groups and tech/arts workshops, all of which are led by anthropologists, geologists, marine scientists, historians, artists and experienced beachcombers. Participants have ample opportunity to expand their beachcombing know-how, as well as partake in activities designed to provide a broader view of factors affecting where and how to beachcomb; why certain things appear on certain shorelines; and what tricks to employ to determine the age and/or origin of beach finds. The conference is geared to consummate and novice beachcombers alike who are fascinated by the stories, science and history behind things they find on the shore. The conference also allows participants to explore new beaches, expand their beachcomber networks, deepen their understanding of coastal conservation issues and learn more about the region in which the conference is held. Annapolis lies in the heart of one of the most extraordinary beachcombing regions in North America. As of late-February, four spots were still available to attend the conference. For more information, visit TheBeachcombingConference.com. cs

BUILD. PRESERVE. In helping our clients build and preserve their wealth, we are often reminded of the Indian River Inlet Bridge. This engineering marvel evokes a nautical theme with its semi-harped cable stays and soaring pylons replicating the sails and masts of tall ships. In order to provide simultaneous vehicle and pedestrian traffic, it was designed and built for long-term durability, integrity and sustainability. Three key values we bring to all our relationships.

WHEN CRISIS ARISES In Berlin, The Cricket Center devotes all its energy, compassion and resources to give at-risk families a fighting chance at survival Written by Victor Fernandes
Photography by Grant L. Gursky

CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2020
ELPING HANDS GREET VICTIMS OF CHILD ABUSE and their families as they enter The Cricket Center. But a furry, four-legged staff member at Worcester County’s child-advocacy center in Berlin, a 3-year-old Labrador-golden retriever cross named Josiah, often attracts the most attention from the youngest visitors. Josiah greets children at the door to begin setting their minds at ease. Josiah helps kids forget their worries, even if just for a little while, by playing games with them. Josiah snuggles with them on the couch as a forensic interviewer delicately gets children to open up about their traumatic experiences. “My daughter talks about Josiah all the time,” one grateful parent wrote in a survey shared with Coastal Style. “She is able to focus on him rather than what happened to her. Thank you for making it possible for her to spend time with him during the hardest time for us.” The healing process starts with a child-friendly atmosphere that allows kids in crisis to be just kids and families to remain strong and supportive. Within 2,100 square feet of office space in the shadow of Atlantic General Hospital, children and their families find a safe haven to one day move past the nightmare of child abuse. Kids find a small table with toys after walking through the doors, while their families get the attention they need — free of charge — from traumabased therapists, family advocates, medical and law-enforcement personnel, as well as other service providers. “We like to say that we can’t change what happened, but we can change what happens next,” said The Cricket Center’s executive director, Wendy Myers.
H
Tail ored to y ou r in divi du al l if es tyle
Like Josiah, the staff help kids and families every step of the way and long after cases are closed. A former victim who’s now studying social work shared that sentiment in a note to The Cricket Center’s family advocate. “You helped me and my family through a very hard time,” she wrote. “One day I hope to help someone, like you helped me. My mom and I talk about you often; we couldn’t have gotten through without you.” The Cricket Center, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, relies on fundraisers, donations and grants to provide invaluable services. Now, the search for a new 7,000 sq. ft. space — estimated to cost between $2.5 million and $4 million — has begun. The Cricket Center’s signature event, the seventh annual Walk for Kids, is set for April 19 on the Ocean City Boardwalk in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Given the lifelong impact on families throughout Worcester County, a new place for The Cricket Center will be worth every penny. “Rather than taking a family who are already in crisis and adding to the burden, we partner with them,” Myers said. “We walk with them from beginning to end. We support them through that whole process. It makes such a big difference.” cs

HISTORY
ANNIE OAKLEY’S CAMBRIDGE house is the only surviving property in the nation that was either owned or occupied by Oakley as her primary and permanent residence.
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN — AND RELAX Internationally renowned sharpshooter Annie Oakley once called Cambridge home Written by Joe Willey OME PEOPLE LEAVE THE SHORES of the Delmarva Peninsula to make a name for themselves. Some come famous and look to the Shore to provide a relaxed charm that the stresses of fame cannot offer. One of Cambridge’s most renowned citizens who longed for rest was a person whose name is woven into the fabric of the legends of the rough and tumble American West — Annie Oakley. She was born in Ohio in 1860 as Phoebe Ann (“Annie”) Mosey. After her father’s early death, she began trapping and hunting to help support the family. She had such skill with a rifle that a few years later, she entered a shooting competition and beat sharpshooter Frank Butler. The two had more than marksmanship in common and were soon married. In 1885, both Oakley and Butler joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, a circus-like touring troupe. Her skill was uncanny, but the pace was grueling, so in 1912, Oakley and Butler moved to Cambridge, looking forward to a time away from the spotlight and free of the pressures of travel.

They built a house on Cambridge’s scenic Bellevue Avenue, overlooking the Choptank River. The spot was also a popular location for resting flocks of waterfowl. The house has a unique front roofline, which tradition says was designed to let both Oakley and her husband move easily from the second-floor rooms to the flat balcony and shoot the birds floating a short distance from their front door. But the couple soon grew restless and left Cambridge after five years. They never returned. Oakley died in November of 1926. Her husband died just 18 days later. The house, affectionately known as the “Annie Oakley House,” is now on the National Registry of Historic Places. Annie Oakley is an American legend, but when she and her husband looked for a place where they could escape the frenetic pace of show business, they found the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Just as she was attracted to the charm and beauty of the area, many are still being drawn today. Her name may be synonymous with the soul and bravado of the West, but because of a few restful years, it is also synonymous with the relaxed pace of Delmarva. cs

BOOKSHELF
Tales Worth Dreaming About Written by Nick Brandi Every year for the past seven years, Cat & Mouse Press holds the Rehoboth Beach Reads Short Story Contest. Sponsored by Browseabout Books, the contest invites writers to submit short stories that fit the theme “beach dreams” that also have a connection to Rehoboth Beach. The top three winners of the contest — as determined by a panel of judges that included Tyler Antoine, Stephanie Fowler, Lois Hoffman, Laurel Marshfield, Mary Pauer and Harold O. Wilson — receive prize money in the amounts of $500, $250 and $100, respectively. The judges also selected other stories of merit, which, along with the topthree finishers, were published recently by Cat & Mouse in the book Beach Dreams. The top-three stories for 2019 are:
1st Place Dear Joan By Mary Dolan In this story, a beachcomber in Rehoboth espies an elderly woman who is writing a letter on a portable Royal typewriter that seems as old as the woman herself. Rather than mind her own business and move on down the beach, the story’s narrator perches just close enough to the senescent typist to read over her shoulder. What emerges is a love letter to Joan, an old flame, as she recounts the story of their meeting back in 1948, when the old woman was just 17. She writes of joyful summers in Rehoboth and White Shoulders perfume, of her indifference to young servicemen at USO dances and of a deep-seated love she didn’t understand. Of course, the star-crossed lovers would never be, yet the enduring emotion it engendered would come to shape the rest of the old woman’s life. Author Mary Dolan lives in Easton with her partner, Judy, and five rescue cats. She is also a photographer and previously ran a marketing communications firm in Philadelphia.
Cat & Mouse Press was established to produce books and other materials that are fun, entertaining and of particular interest to residents of and visitors to the Delmarva region. The company publishes a free weekly newspaper for writers, Writing Is a Shore Thing (WritingIsAShoreThing.com). For more information, visit the company’s website at CatAndMousepress.com.

2nd Place Shells Laura Nelson Selinsky Shells tells the story of a day at the beach for Ruth and her grandchildren, Sophie and Max. While Sophie is a gregarious young girl, filled with a youthful joy for life, Max is withdrawn and barely speaks. As Sophie goes with her mother, Anna, to bodysurf, Max is assiduously arranging a series of seashells in the sand. With the focused attention of a brain surgeon, Max refuses to be swayed from task, toiling away in silent determination, even as Ruth watches over him, understandably concerned by the inner sanctum of Max’s antisocial world. In the end, coming from diametrically opposite directions, these very unalike siblings have seized the day, each in their own way, experiencing a personal victory in the process. Laura Nelson Selinsky wrote an opera at age 9. Since then, she has been a naturalist, pastor and a teacher of literature, writing and mythology. She writes both fiction and nonfiction in a variety of genres and, at press time, was scheduled to release her debut novel.
3rd Place Four Corners By Chris Jacobsen The Ukrainian wax-resist method of egg decoration known as pysanky serves as the backdrop of this story, which centers on a young girl, Tasha, and her relationship with her beloved Baba, or grandmother. The creative yet painstaking process of pysanky is explored during Tasha’s summer in Rehoboth, where she got a job she enjoyed at Candy Kitchen. After Tasha experiences her first great personal loss, she uses the craft Baba taught her to pay one last tribute to the woman she cherished. Author Chris Jacobsen herself practices the craft of pysanky, which she had been taught by a Ukrainian family 35 years earlier. A grandmother of three, Jacobsen works part-time in a veterinarian’s office, hoping to draw inspiration for her upcoming book, Sandy Paws. cs
Fine Homes Built With AMISh craftsmanship
Literary Giant Written by Joe Willey IRONICALLY, ONE OF THE EASTERN SHORE’S most famous natives is not well known on the Eastern Shore. The critically acclaimed novelist John Barth was born and raised in Cambridge, and the area’s influence has never left him. The town, nestled on the banks of the Choptank River and bordered by a vast expanse of wetlands and wildlife, played a role in his early work and continues to course through his career. John Barth was born in 1930, and he grew up in a house near the Choptank River. His father, called Whitey, owned a soda fountain, appropriately named Whitey’s Candyland, which locals shortened to Whitey’s. Jack, as Barth was called, grew up in the town and around the store. Barth was musically inclined and left Cambridge for New York, briefly studying at Juilliard before attending Johns Hopkins University, where he received his BA in 1951 and master’s in ’52. During that time, he married, became a father and began his long-standing career as a college professor. His first novel, The Floating Opera, has a title inspired by Barth’s boyhood memories. In it, a mobile floating theater company called The James Adams Floating Theatre would sail into town and dock at Long Wharf, where the young Barth would see it moored. The novel was nominated for the National Book Award in 1957. His best-selling novel, The Sot-Weed Factor, published in 1960, was again set in Maryland. Other works followed, including Chimera, for which he was awarded the National Book Award in 1972. His most recent novel, Every Third Thought, was published in 2011. It is said that whatever is bred in the bone will out in the flesh. If the salt of the Choptank River and the marshes of Dorchester County are what created the bones of Barth and his works are his flesh, then this is true. Respect for the postmodern works of John Barth may not be universally known or appreciated, but it is certain that the landscape and history of his hometown run like a tide through the soul of his works. cs

ACADEMY ART MUSEUM Unveils Its New Look
Renderings courtesy Ziger|Snead Architects
Following extensive enhancements inside and out, Easton’s Academy Art Museum celebrates its Grand Reopening and reveals its upcoming spring exhibitions LOCATED IN EASTON, THE ACADEMY ART MUSEUM is a cultural arts center, serving the community through exhibitions and a broad spectrum of arts programs as well as housing an impressive art collection. The museum occupies one of Easton’s historic landmarks: the original chartered “School House,” which was constructed in 1820. Later additions have connected the adjacent Thomas-Hardcastle house with new program space and the creation of an outdoor courtyard. Designed by Ziger|Snead Architects of Baltimore, the new project reorients visitors through the construction of a delicate glass entry pavilion designed to be sympathetic and deferential to its historic context. The courtyard paving and landscape elements have been renovated to create a new outdoor space that serves as a welcoming entry and as a location for events. Interior alterations of the main atrium now greet visitors with a new sense of arrival and serve as a hub for activity in the museum.

BEACHCOMBING
Perhaps no one in the world is more revered for her beachcombing practices than Dr. Deacon Ritterbush. We sat down with her to collect as many treasures as we could from the expert simply and affectionately known as Dr. Beachcomb Interview by Jonathan Westman Photography by Riley Herendeen
The Grand Beachcomber 40
CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2020
CSM: When did you start beachcombing? DR: I can’t remember not beachcombing. It is a family tradition. My parents were beach people, as were my grandparents and great grandparents. For generations, we have lived near big water, where we sailed, swam, fished and crabbed, saved lives as lifeguards, and beachcombed. Tell me about your time in our neck of the woods and combing the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. My earliest memories are of beachcombing for sea glass with my mother on our home beach fronting Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis. This was in the early 1950s. Lots of sea glass back then. Thick, ice-blue shards that I know now were probably from old soda bottles dumped during the heyday of the bay’s resort era in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We have pictures of me as a toddler sitting in the sand with my grandmother in Florida, looking at pretty shells we’d just collected. In fourth grade, when kids started to get cliquey and mean, beachcombing became my best friend. A salve to soothe my loneliness when I was left out because I wouldn’t join in their cruel games. I’d spend weekends by myself with a picnic lunch, exploring all the beaches, from the tip of Bay Ridge crossing the inlet over to Highland Beach and back. What’s the most unique/interesting treasure you discovered from the Chesapeake? Do you know its history? I had cigar boxes filled with sea glass, shells, fossils, stones. Even some arrowheads and hotel china from the old Beach Ridge on the Chesapeake Resort.
SECRETS OF THE GLASS According to world-renowned beachcombing expert Dr. Deacon Ritterbush, even though stocks are thinning in certain areas, the world’s beaches are in no danger of running out of sea glass anytime soon.
You’ve stated previously that beachcombing has also provided you with a spiritual means to weather life’s challenges. How so? The only period of time I did not beachcomb was for seven months, five years ago, when I was undergoing chemo treatments for ovarian cancer and was strongly advised by my doctor to stay out of the sun. I knew if I went to the beach, I would want to beachcomb, so I avoided it. That was hard. Because beachcombing to me is breathing. An active form of meditation that puts me in the right now. This is an important space for someone like me, with ADD, to be in because it calms my mind down, grounds me and helps me focus. It also fills me with gratitude. True beachcombers are a happy lot, for they have learned to be pleased with whatever the beach offers up. Just wandering a shoreline, breathing in the fresh air, wandering by moving water is a gift. No matter if the weather is crummy or the beach finds scant. For those new to beachcombing, what advice and/or tips would you share with them as they embark upon this hobby? I’ll let you in on some little secrets. The first: There is no best treasure. Sea glass and exotic shells are the sirens that probably first pique people’s interest, whet their appetites and entice them to explore a beach further. But all treasures are interesting. Stone tools and ancient fossils. Sea beans and glass fishing floats that drift for decades in the great seas only to finally beach somewhere, still intact. Pottery shards, especially those with designs, have stories few shards of sea glass can compete with. The second secret is, no, we are not running out of sea glass. Stocks are thinning in some areas because of sealevel rise (like in the mid-Atlantic region) or because some shorelines are strained to overcapacity due to their popularity. But there are tons of other beaches across the globe just waiting to be discovered. Learn to use Google Maps to identify hidden beaches. Learn to research the history of coastal settlement areas, and there you may also find beach treasure.
And the third secret: There is no best beach. Yes, some are more productive than others. Sanibel Island for shells; Sunderland, England, region for sea glass; Pacific Northwest beaches for driftwood and agates; Nova Scotia for stones; the British Thames for mudlarking; Chesapeake Bay for fossils. But really, all beaches have their own special treasures. Take time to understand why particular treasures are turning up on the beaches you always comb. That research could keep you busy for weeks. And that’s when the real fun begins. cs Editor’s note: Dr. Deacon Ritterbush is one of the world’s most respected beachcombing experts. Affectionately nicknamed Dr. Beachcomb many years ago, by a young student who forgot her name, she is also an award-winning author, lecturer, anthropologist and political economist, having worked as a sustainable development strategist for national and international agencies. She founded the International Beachcombing Conference, which takes place March 23-29, at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Philip Merrill Center, outside of Annapolis. She will also be at The Beachcombing Center on Tilghman Island for the debut of its first exhibit, on April 3, and at the 9th Annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival, at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, in St. Michaels, on April 4-5. Wear waterproof boots and get into the water. Don’t be afraid to get down close in the water and mud. Mud larking can yield the best finds. Bring gloves, a waterproof container to store finds and cheater glasses or a magnifying glass for micro-hunting. Rocky shorelines yield better sea glass because an object has a better chance of being tumbled, and the glass will be smoother. The best beaches for beachcombing are usually the least accessible. Consider using a kayak to reach less popular beaches. Those nestled near shipping channels are a prime spot to find new pieces. Scouring a pebbly beach during the first low tide after a storm will often yield favorable results, as well. The Chesapeake and Delaware Bay regions are two local waterfront areas that provide favorable conditions for finding the small but elusive shards. cs — TIPS PROVIDED BY MARY MCCARTHY

Richard LaMotte
Authoring Authority
REQUIRED READING Chestertown’s Richard LaMotte has been at the forefront of sea-glass research since presenting his first lecture on the topic back in 2002. His book, Pure Sea Glass, Discovering Nature’s Vanishing Gems, is a master reference on sea glass for North American collectors, earning first place in nonfiction from the Writer’s Digest 13th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards.
EASTERN SHORE WRITER RICHARD LAMOTTE IS INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN FOR HIS SEA-GLASS KNOWLEDGE Written by Joe Willey
R
ichard LaMotte is an expert on the subtly beautiful but abandoned pieces of history called sea glass. He has collected more than 40,000 pieces along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay with his family — and he will gently educate you on a fragment’s esoteric past, the unforgiving physics that help create it and the emotional attachment that can come from discovering the perfect piece. LaMotte’s passion for finding, dating and collecting sea glass has inspired countless others to begin searching.

CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2020
When his first book, Pure Sea Glass, was published, it received immediate attention. “I knew people were excited, but I didn't know how excited,” he remembers. LaMotte had extensive knowledge of the subject, but he did not want to write a dry primer. “I tried to bring art along with science.” The book, now in its 18th printing, is as artful as it is scientific. Speaking to LaMotte about sea glass is both eye-opening and educational. During a conversation, details flow from him in an easy rhythm. He explains that
glass can be roughly dated by color, with soft pastels dating before the 1930s and brighter colors coming later. While white, kelly green and brown glass are the most common, orange and red are the rarest. Cobalt blue glass is prevalent in the Chesapeake Bay region since Maryland Glass was the producer of the iconic blue Bromo-Seltzer bottle. Who knew there was enough information in a shard of glass to link it to a shard of history? LaMotte also has an encyclopedic knowledge of just why sea glass develops the soft, lustrous finish that makes it attractive to the eye and the hand. The action of waves tossing a piece of glass repetitively against the sand is an important step, but it is not the only one that makes a common glass evolve into a desirable piece of sea glass. Hydration and dehydration also need to work their weathering magic at a molecular level. Surprisingly, common sea glass is not so common. There is another unexpected facet to his prominence as a sea-glass expert and one that continues to inspire him. LaMotte said, “I tried to fit everything I thought people wanted to know in my first book.” But he was consistently surprised by the emotional stories fans of the book shared with him. At book signings, people would introduce themselves and say, “I found this piece when I was at my lowest” or “I remember looking for sea glass with my mom.” One minister used Pure Sea Glass to help parents grieving over the loss of a child to see that something beautiful can come out of brokenness. The depth of a conversation with LaMotte reflects the surprising richness of each piece of sea glass that washes onto a pebbly beach after a storm. There is history, science, exploration and emotion in each tiny fragment, no matter the color. There is a shared enthusiasm for sea glass that rests in the discovery and meaning it brings to an individual’s life. Collectors know that each abandoned piece has weathered countless storms and finally made its way back to shore and made it back beautifully. cs

Natural Artisan SAND N’ STONES OWNER MICHELE BUCKLER USES SEA GLASS TO CRAFT KEEPSAKES OF NATURE'S BEAUTY Written by Alison Clary THERE ARE MANY THINGS A PERSON can stumble upon while walking along the beach, but no shoreline finding can quite compare to the natural treasure of sea glass. With a smooth texture and varying shades of turquoisey blues, purples, greens and soapy whites, sea glass is a sight to behold that aptly makes for a perfect jewelry component Michele Buckler, a local artisan and owner of Sand N’ Stones in Lewes, first took notice of sea glass when she was 6 years old. She then spent years accompanying her mother on sea-glassscavenging outings at the beach every day after school. “I was immediately drawn to the bright hues that sea glass has,” shared Michele. As she grew up, Michele’s adoration of sea glass never wavered, so she began experimenting with wire-wrapping sea glass to make stunning, one-of-a-kind jewelry. Over time, she perfected her craft and gained in-depth knowledge about sea glass and gemstones. Ultimately, her success at craft shows led her to open up Sand N’ Stones in 2005. A white storefront with charming blue shutters and a bright red door, Sand N’ Stones carries many of Michele’s wire-wrapped sea-glass necklaces, pendants, pins, earrings and rings. “Everything is handcrafted and unique. I use gold, argentium, and sterling-silver wirings in my work,” expressed Michele. Because every fragment of sea glass is unique, Michele has always looked to complement the varying natural elements in each piece of jewelry she creates, which truly makes her work oneof-a-kind. Fittingly, her slogan has always been, “Mother Nature does the artwork, and Michele puts a frame on it”.

HANDLED WITH CARE Buckler crafts each one of her jewelry pieces by hand, using wiring made of gold, argentium and sterling silver, for a real one-of-a-kind creation.
There are several different ways to acquire Michele’s handmade jewelry. The first option is to purchase one of her already-made pieces displayed in the store’s cases. The second option is to select one of the sea-glass fragments available in the store, and Michele will then custom-wire-wrap it based on the customer’s wishes. Another option is for customers to scavenge their own piece of sea glass and ask Michele to wire-wrap it for them. This last option really results in a special gift that not only is visually appealing, but is a gift that also serves as a means for preserving the memories from the glass’s specific finding — such as when it was found, how it was discovered or who it was uncovered with. “I really like to help my customers bring in their own connection into the jewelry I create for them,” shared Michele. cs

FESTIVAL OF WONDER The Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival returns to Lewes this June The Lewes Historical Society will host the 11th annual Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival June 27-28 on its campus and the outside grounds of Canal Park, surrounding the Society’s Life Saving Station on the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. This year’s event will emphasize the historic origins of sea glass and the authenticity of shards. Thanks to the promotion of greater environmental awareness, there has been a decline in naturally occurring sea glass, creating a market for expensive and rare pieces. Organizers plan to showcase these unique finds and invite attendees to bring their own personal discoveries of bottles, shards and sea glass, to learn more about their history. As many as 70 vendors from up and down the East Coast, and as far away as the Virgin Islands, will set up shop to showcase their creations, including decoy carvers and waterfowl artists. The festival will also feature festive, live music and delicious food all weekend. For more information, visit HistoricLewes.org. cs

THE FACE OF TRUSTED LENDING EXPERIENCE K A R I S T O R Y, F I R S T H O M E M O R T G A G E 443-664-2490 What is it that sets a business apart from its competitors year after year? According to Kari Story, it is the kind of customer service that only a knowledgeable and local professional can provide. Story is the branch sales manager of First Home Mortgage in Ocean City and a lover of the relaxed and welcoming area she calls home. In a market dominated by condominium sales, she was able to finance an impressive $47 million in mortgages for her clients in 2019. She is excited but undaunted by last year’s towering totals and has a keen eye for the trends each year can bring. “January sets the tone for the rest of the year,”

she noted. “This January has been active. One factor that has had an impact is the dipping interest rate, now only in the high-3% range.” Because Ocean City’s summer and shoulder seasons bring so many second homeowners back to the resort, she has become an expert in knowing the right local professionals to call to make the real estate transaction go quickly from start to finish. This is the kind of customer service and experience that a lender in another market just cannot provide. Many borrowers have anxiety over the lending process, but Story and her staff ease those fears with their attention to detail and professionalism. Her entire award-winning staff has a calming effect during each step of the process.
Kari’s enviable success would have most professionals basking in the accolades, but not Story. In 2019, she experienced what she calls a “career accomplishment,” by hiring a new loan officer and opening a new office in Bethany Beach. The expansion allows First Home Mortgage to provide its legendary service to even more clients ready to purchase real estate as a primary residence, beach home or investment property. Story once described First Home Mortgage as “small but mighty.” That is an apt description, but their power comes from the reason for their might. “What sets us apart is customer service,” she stated matterof-factly, and First Home Mortgage’s demonstrated success is a powerful testament to that assertion.

Michael Tilghman and Carrie Schwartz, who provide care, direction and guidance with each step of the treatment. The Smiles Correct treatment option is a convenient choice for patients who have had previous treatment, like braces, but now need additional adjustment. Because they’re made at Tilghman Orthodontics, patients have saved thousands of dollars on treatments. Although offering a cutting-edge solution like Smiles Correct is one option, other patients may
need a more traditional approach to orthodontic care. Dr. Tilghman notes that “the majority of our young patients still need traditional treatment, with braces.” Tilghman Orthodontics refuses to provide a one-size-fits-all approach to its patients’ needs. The care provided is practical and focuses on providing the best, most appropriate treatment for each patient. Quality care, experience and cost-effective solutions are what sets Tilghman Orthodontics apart from other practices in the area. Now, with the success of Smiles Correct, the tools have become sharper and more innovative in providing individualized solutions for its patients.

new wedding-and-event facility (Lighthouse Cove Event Center) with public beach access — all available to its guests and the Dewey Beach community throughout the year. In fall of 2019, it was recently enhanced even further, with the official opening of a new bay walk along Rehoboth Bay, a replenished beach and a recreational pier. The public bay-walk structure will be the first of its kind in the Rehoboth Bay area. It will ensure continued public access to Rehoboth Bay for
Dewey Beach residents and visitors, providing a venue for such recreational activities as crabbing, fishing, birdwatching and plant-and-habitat study. It will also allow access to the newly replenished beach for families and others who prefer calmer waters for swimming and other recreation. A new sunset gazebo opened last fall, where guests can enjoy some of the best sunsets on the East Coast. Additionally, the iconic Lighthouse Restaurant, located on the property, is being rebuilt and is expected to open this summer.

The Lighthouse Cove Event Center, the new Lighthouse Restaurant, the new Sunset Bar and the Hyatt Place hotel are all operated and managed by full-service hospitality management company TKo Hospitality. TKo recently announced a new management team, which includes hospitality veterans General Manager Andrew DiFonzo, Food and Beverage Director Peter Lynch, Catering Sales Manager Lisa Wilgus and Executive Chef Robert Sosnovich. The newly unveiled venue includes 14,600 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event space overlooking Rehoboth Bay, as well as newly expanded beach space for
wedding ceremonies. Guests will also enjoy a 4,340-square-foot ballroom, 3,020-square-foot pre-event space for cocktail hours and other gatherings, and nearly 10,000 square feet of outdoor patio space, where eventgoers can revel and take in beautiful sunsets over the bay. “Positioned just steps from Rehoboth Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of Dewey Beach, the Lighthouse Cove Event Center is the perfect setting for destination or beach weddings, receptions and events,” said Vince DiFonzo, president and COO of TKo Hospitality. After officially opening its doors in September, the venue has already hosted several weddings,
conferences and high-profile events put on by the Delaware Restaurant Association, Cancer Support Community DE, the Delaware Center of Inland Bays and others. “Since beginning work on Lighthouse Cove a decade ago, we always envisioned it as a one-of-a-kind resort destination that could serve as an asset to both visitors and residents of this community,” said Vince DiFonzo. “The opening of these amenities to the public marks yet another important step toward the realization of that vision, and we look forward to having them available for another exciting summer, in 2020.”

Finding the ideal piece of furniture or thoughts of designing an entire room are often accompanied by overwhelming feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, as many homeowners are unsure what to do or where to start. At Creative Concepts, the process begins with the designer easily and naturally connecting with their clients, putting their minds at ease and building a trusting relationship to fully understand their needs and personalities. This priority is of the utmost importance to Creative Concepts designers, as they are welcomed by the clients into their personal spaces – a gesture never taken for granted. The bond is further enhanced by the designer expertly guiding the
homeowners through the myriad of available selections and conveying current design trends. The relationship is fortified through the design of the space loved by the clients, which in turn engenders an excitement and energy that sweeps over all of them. Well-known for bringing state-of-the-art imaging technology to the Shore, they recently added a second 3T MRI, for a total of four MRI suites (two 3T and two 1.5). This is good news for patients, as it will expedite scheduling of MRI appointments and provide new imaging technology and techniques. The addition of their new 3T MRI uses stateof-the-art biomatrix technology in the table to monitor patients’ heart rates and breathing. It has 64 channels — the most of any scanner on the Shore. This safely allows better image quality with faster scan times in a shorter amount of

time. Most non-contrast scans are completed in 15-20 minutes vs. 45 minutes with older model scanners. Another advancement Peninsula Imaging’s MRI offers is metal artifact reduction system, or MARS for short. MARS enables superior neurological and musculoskeletal imaging in patients with metal implants. Complete hip and knee replacement scans that were once deemed undiagnostic due to metal artifact may now be examined in a way never thought possible. The incredible detail of the metal and surrounding tissue is unparalleled; even the rivets or threads of screws can be visualized. MR enterography is an MRI that evaluates
the digestive system. Patients drink oral contrast and have IV contrast. Images are taken of the intestines of mostly young Crohn’s disease patients as MRI is a safer alternative for younger patients than CT enterography, which uses radiation. Patient safety is a priority. A MRSO, or MR safety officer, is on-site to make sure any implants a patient may have will be properly screened and MRI implant conditions are met. You will find their staff both compassionate and competent. Peninsula Imaging is accredited in MRI of the breast, musculoskeletal, angiography, body, neuro and spine imaging. Specialty studies utilizing a CAD system are used for cancer evaluation.

The two youngest children are learning the craft and how the business operates. Ocean View Jewelers is dedicated to the artistry of custom-made jewelry but embraces current technology, like computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing, to create the most precise jewelry possible. Since working with their clients to create and deliver exceptional jewelry is their priority, the steps they take to ensure a client is happy are crucial. Repairing jewelry is the largest part of the business, with custom-made jewelry running a close second. “Most people don’t know that they can have a piece of custom-made jewelry
for about the same price as a ready-made piece,” Sergio said with noticeable passion in his voice. He explains that much of the custommade jewelry is repurposed from older pieces that a client does not wear and fashioned into something new and treasured for years to come. The dedication to craftsmanship and the ability to implement new technology allows Ocean View Jewelers to provide a unique experience to its clients and open a doorway to their future. Manufacturing designs, satisfying clients and growing their company is what Ocean View Jewelers is planning in the upcoming years. To reach that goal will take effort, experience and dedication, the very attributes that have made this family business a success.

Spring: A Season of Change A MINDFULNESS EXAMINATION: AS THE WEATHER WARMS, TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RENEW YOUR ROUTINE Column by Kelli Anders, MS, C-IAYT, RYT 500
The fourth in a series, this article aims to provide you with an understanding of seasonal routines and alignment with nature. Spring is a time of renewal and growth. Alongside blooming blossoms, buzzing bees and litters of critters, we inherently celebrate the sense of opportunity for a fresh start, to lighten up and cleanse ourselves of winter’s accumulated excesses. Seasonal routines are one of our best tools for supporting our physiology and aligning ourselves with nature’s rhythms. Following are some ideas to encourage you in developing your own springtime routine:
70
CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2020
• Expect and anticipate change. Spring is a season of transition and characteristically “wet” — the signal here is to be fluid, not rigid, with implementing changes. • Consider a cleanse. As cravings for heavier comfort foods give way to lighter fare, your body may be inviting you to consider a cleanse or a fast. Fresh juices and mono-meals (eating one type of [whole] food at a time) can aid in pushing the reset button on our digestive system. • Choose wisely. Outside of a structured cleanse, you can support your body’s natural desire to purify and assist channels of elimination by favoring more pungent, bitter and astringent tastes, along with warm, light foods that are easier to digest.
• Step-down program. Gradually reduce your intake of heavy, oily or fried foods and try to curtail snacking between meals.
fresh, trendy looks at affordable prices
• Embrace the warmth. Drinking roomtemperature, warm or hot beverages, like spicy herbal teas or even sipping warm water with honey, throughout the day can further support the renewal process. • Remain mindful. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, be aware that dairy products can be congesting, exacerbating symptoms. • Chart a course. Continue to soothe the nervous system with regular routines for working, eating, sleeping and exercise; beyond that, explore ways to incorporate more playfulness, adventure, creativity and community.

• Healing touch. Express gratitude to each part of your body with gentle self-massage to stimulate lymphatic circulation and fluid balance. • Sense of timing. Exercise can be especially supportive in countering the heavy, wet spring season by evoking a sense of lightness and mobility. Consider swimming, biking, hiking or yoga between 6 and 10 (a.m. or p.m.). While our specific routines will be unique, aligning our individual rhythms with those in nature can facilitate a smooth transition from one season to the next. This spring, experience a renewed sense of joy, hope and health with seasonal diet and lifestyle choices inspired by nature. cs

TRAINING FOR LIFE Coastal Style contributor Victor Fernandes shares his inspirational story of how exercise, determination and the birth of his son changed his life forever Photography by Grant L. Gursky I SEE A PART OF ME IN EVERYONE I TRAIN. I once stood where they stand, day after day, with a goal of becoming more physically fit. I am a character in their story, helping them write the narrative as to why they have embarked on this truly personal experience. Each is unique from the others, but the source of motivation that brought us all together is equally real. My weight stood at 248 pounds a decade ago. I recall the exact number all these years later, even after I turned the page on that chapter of my life and officially earned my personal training certification, in May 2018. I began my first job in the fitness industry at Coastal Fitness in Ocean City last February. The story behind my inspiration also remains as fresh in my mind as it did the moment I met with a personal trainer for the first time. My wife, Shelly, and I welcomed our youngest son, Zachary, into the world in July 2010. I began to imagine all of those special moments we would share moving forward: his first words, first steps and first day of school; walking down the aisle to receive his high school and college diplomas; marrying the woman he loves. Then, one day, Zach would feel the same way we felt the day he was born.

I had wondered back then if I would live long enough to experience those moments, because I was so overweight and unhealthy. Some days, getting out of bed was a major chore. So, having the energy needed to keep up with a young child who’s full of life seemed impossible. That was a difficult reality to deal with for me, especially since I had failed so many times before while trying to become a healthier version of myself. I spent quite a bit of time working out in gyms in the years prior to that first meeting with my new trainer. I wanted to get in shape physically back then, too. But time and time again, traveling that path alone led to frustration over the lack of results and in turn led me to quit training as my weight continued to grow. I felt helpless until I asked for help from the personal training staff at a gym in Erie, PA, where my family lived at the time. Then the work began, with a blend of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and a belief that this was a lifestyle change many years in the making. The pounds began to disappear — 70 pounds in a little more than a year — as a strong work ethic and desire to succeed began to build through the knowledge and guidance my trainer provided. I didn’t want to fail, and my trainer didn’t want me to fail. This time would be different. It’s difficult to get in better physical shape and stay on track after meeting your fitness goals. Life can interfere in so many ways. I could have quit so many times along the way, like I did so many times before. Perhaps I would have if I had attempted to travel that new path in life alone.
Victor Fernandes overcame personal challenges and lost more than 70 pounds in just over one year.
More than likely, I wouldn’t have become a personal trainer, because I may not have had the confidence to drastically change careers at 46 years old, after a 25-year career in sports journalism. It was a life-changing journey, one that led me to the Eastern Shore to help others succeed like the trainer who helped me. Like me, my clients reached a point in their lives when it was time for a change in their health for the better, so they sought help in hopes of moving along the road to better health and well-being.
There have been good days, which give them the confidence to move on to the next day. There have been challenging days, which give them the mental toughness and unyielding determination to push forward. My clients can quit at any time, but they continue to work hard. I’m so proud to be a part of their road to better health, and I look forward to what lies ahead for us. These are all good days for me, because I have witnessed the progress each has made in our time together. I understand the thoughts and concerns going through their minds. I appreciate how they feel after taking the next positive steps toward their fitness goals. I’ve stood where they stood. And if I can do it, they can do it. Anyone can. cs

WELLNESS
A Rainbow of Healing COLOR THERAPIST ELEYNE-MARI SHARP PROVIDES A PRIMER ON HOW TO USE MULTICOLORED SEA GLASS AS AN INSTRUMENT OF WELLNESS FOR THE BODY, MIND AND SOUL FOR ALL ITS TIMELESS BEAUTY AND RICH HISTORY, the miracle of sea glass can play an even more significant role in our lives. It can serve as a wondrous catalyst for a body-mind-soul connection that is highly conducive to inner peace. The first step to engaging this restorative renewal is to harvest your own personal collection of multicolored sea glass. Whether you comb the beach, walk into a shop or order online, gather sea glass in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, for each possesses unique properties that confer differentiated benefits. Next, find yourself a beautiful, whitesand beach, either in reality or just within your own imagination. Settle into a comfortable, sedentary position, and with the sun directly overhead, allow its warm and brilliant rays to flow through your entire body. With the caw of seagulls around you and the languid waves lapping at your toes, produce your sea glass in the following sequence, holding each, one at a time, in the palm of your hand. Red: Red gives you courage and helps you obtain your material needs. Stare into the sea glass and breathe in the color — imagining yourself becoming smaller and smaller, until the red sea glass surrounds you — and feel its intense power, warmth and energy. As you exhale, cast out any fears and doubts you have about yourself, your family and your life. Orange: Orange is a joyful color. It makes you feel happy about your choices and your life and expels anything that may dampen your enthusiasm. Breathe in the color, and with it, happiness and joy. As you exhale, dismiss any bad habits or addictions that may impede the enjoyment of your life.

Yellow: Yellow confers self-confidence, no matter how many criticisms you receive. Breathe in the color, and as you do, accept the self-worth, knowledge and wisdom it carries. As you exhale, release the diffidence and concerns that may block your happiness. Green: Embrace the green sea glass, as green is the color of harmony, balance and peace. When you are hurrying to meet deadlines, visualize the color green and restore your equanimity. Breathe in its peace, good health and forgiveness, then release the stored resentment, jealousy and sickness. Blue: Blue offers creativity and communication, simultaneously helping you realize the truth about yourself and about others. As you inhale the color blue, allow yourself to be suffused by its truth and serenity. As you exhale, cast out dishonesty and stubbornness.
Indigo: The color of intuition, indigo is the inner voice that tells you to “go for it.” Trust your intuition and realize your full potential as a human being. As you inhale, take in wisdom and intuition. As you exhale, rid yourself of judgment and depression. Violet: Violet is the color of spirit and faith. No matter how difficult your life may get, faith never lets you give up on yourself. As you breathe in the color, accept faith and gratitude; then, as you exhale, release the arrogance and negativity. cs Editor’s note: Eleyne-Mari Sharp is a certified color therapist, spiritual aromatherapist and Lightworker Crystal Practitioner with over 20 years of study and experience in color therapy, aromatherapy and crystal therapy. She is the host of A Rainbow in the Clouds podcast and the author of Mad About Hue: A Memoir in Living Color and a contributor to Simply Color for Everyday Living.

SUCCESS STORY
Provider Enterprise To Improve Care eninsula Regional Health System (PRHS) continues to invest in the health of its community with the development of a provider enterprise that aims to improve care and retain skilled clinicians. Dr. Karin DiBari, an OB/GYN specialist by training who has been selected to lead the health system’s medical group, is tasked with developing the new provider enterprise. Scheduled to launch July 1, 2020, she said the goal is to create a structure that allows clinicians to thrive, develop their skills and provide great care. “Our doctors work both in the walls of the hospital and they work in the office setting,” said DiBari, MD, MMM, FACOG and Vice President of Peninsula Regional Medical Group. “When the medical group is under the hospital, it puts undue constraints on the ambulatory side of the practice. By creating an independent medical group, we can better respond to the needs of the community.” The enterprise will focus on the physician-patient relationship, and since all PRHS practices use Epic, Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s (PRMC) electronic medical record, patients will have better connectivity with their clinical data. Dr. DiBari said many health systems have implemented a provider enterprise model in response to the rapidly evolving healthcare industry. The new PRHS enterprise will include more than 265 primary and specialty care providers in more than 30 locations throughout the region.

Clinical Integration
Dr. James Trumble
DR. JAMES TRUMBLE IS ON A MISSION. As the Vice President of Clinical Integration for Peninsula Regional Health System, he spends several hours on the road each week visiting medical offices in an attempt to enhance patient care. His job is clinical integration, and it has many benefits; patients have better access to their doctors, and doctors are able to align with other community providers to ensure patients know their next step in the continuum of care. “It’s a really good feeling to be part of this,” Dr. Trumble said. In Maryland, due to the reimbursement model, hospitals are held accountable for the health of their community. Without the help of community physicians, keeping patients well is an impossible task. But with clinical integration — improved communication among hospitals, primary care providers, nursing homes, home health agencies, etc. — the end result is better care and a better experience for the patient.
Clinical integration means:
“Clinical integration is the way we work closely with physician practices to incorporate the many clinical, social, and economic aspects of health and healthcare together to service a greater goal of better community health and individual patient health.” Clinical integration is proving effective, Dr. Trumble said. It is not only improving connections with community providers, but it is augmenting support for staffing and technology and creating innovations in care redesign. While there is much work to be done, Dr. Trumble and his team are already seeing results. For him, success will be achieved when care gaps are closed. “We want patients get to a point of selfmanagement of their chronic disease,” he said. “This takes working together to help patients achieve that goal, and requires us to be proactive in the way we prevent disease and disease progression.”
A: Hospitals collaborate with community practices B: Access and continuity of care improves C: Communication exists around the complexities of healthcare D: Evidence-based practice and consistency results E: Seamless inclusion of all the partners in healthcare F: Experience for patients and their caregivers

Island Time The Wylder Hotel offers a picture-postcard escape — without leaving the Eastern Shore Written by Katie Riley Photography by Bill Whaley

rossing the Knapps Narrow Bridge onto Tilghman Island, a three-mile island in Talbot County on the Chesapeake Bay, one feels as though they’ve stepped back in time. There are few businesses in the small downtown, and most residents still make their living the way their ancestors did — on the water. The only sign of rush hour is the quiet hum of boats returning to the harbor to unload their hauls and the flocks of shorebirds that fly overhead. In the center of it all stands the Wylder Hotel, a former 1898 boardinghouse that now operates as a boutique hotel for travelers who want an authentic Eastern Shore experience. Opened in 2018, the hotel has retained its original charm, with many rooms occupying the same space that housed working watermen a century ago. With its white clapboard buildings proudly standing on more than nine acres on the banks of the Choptank River, the hotel is ideally situated for island exploration. Visitors are welcomed with Champagne at check-in and led through the historic lobby, decorated with antique fishing rods and vintage paintings. The 54 guest rooms and suites boast nautical décor in navy and white, with Egyptian cotton linens, Further bath products, and in-room concierge tablets. Rooms are minimally furnished in order to keep the focus on the view: a postcard-perfect waterfront landscape where guests can watch boats return to the adjacent Dogwood Harbor, home of the last working skipjack fleet in North America.
HISTORY & HOSPITALITY Unlike nearby luxury resorts, there is a sense of history and nostalgia imbued in the buildings and grounds of the Wylder Hotel that continues to pay homage to the island and its people.

Chef Jordan Lloyd brings world-class culinary experience and creativity to the Wylder Hotel The recent addition of Executive Chef Jordan Lloyd ensures a gourmet experience in the property’s two on-site restaurants, Tickler’s Restaurant and Bar Mumbo. Lloyd honed his chops in kitchens like Per Se in New York and Bourbon Steak in DC, and spent years as chef at the Bartlett Pear Inn in Easton. Despite his impressive résumé, Lloyd envisions a down-to-earth dining experience at the Wylder. “I want diners to have a fourstar experience without all the fuss. The goal is to express all that the Eastern Shore has to offer,” says Lloyd. With an emphasis on local ingredients, the menu at Tickler’s Restaurant is heavy on seafood, with classics like Maryland lump crab cakes and rockfish oyster stew and casual fare like oyster po’boys and slow-roasted spare ribs. Lloyd is passionate about his sourcing and most ingredients, if not produced on-site, have made the short journey from farm to table. Vegetables and salads on the menu are selected straight from the hotel’s gardens, and Lloyd maintains relationships with dozens of the region’s farmers and purveyors. Cheese is sourced from local creameries, and chicken comes from the farm it was raised on, just up the road. Photo by Grant L. Gursky
Whether arriving by car or boat — there’s a 25-slip marina with free docking for guests — it’s possible to stay at the Wylder for a weekend and never leave the property. Paddleboards and kayaks are free for guests, in addition to bike cruisers for those who want to explore the island or take a quick ride to the Tilghman Island Country store for provisions. There’s a sense of nostalgia at the Wylder not found at the more glamorous hotels nearby, where guests may sport tennis whites as they head off to the five-star spa. Luxury here can be found in the quiet lapping of waves against the dock and an afternoon spent lazily rocking on the hotel’s expansive front porch. On any Saturday in the summer, one may find children playing bocce ball on the lawn, while parents lounge by the heated saltwater pool. At night, guests enjoy the music of local acoustic singers or congregate to roast marshmallows around the waterfront firepit.

WHEN’S LOW TIDE? Mary T. McCarthy has spent years sifting through the shoreline of Chesapeake Bay to prepare for the debut of her brand-new museum, The Beachcombing Center Written by Katie Riley Photography by Jay Fleming
I
t is still dark most mornings when Mary T. McCarthy sets out in her kayak, paddling toward a nearby beach, accessible only by boat. As the sun begins to peek over the horizon, McCarthy is knee-deep in mud on the shoreline, searching carefully for some unknown treasure. The perfect find? “Whatever finds me that day,” she says, matter-of-factly. McCarthy, an educator, lecturer and bestselling author of multiple books, is also an expert beachcomber. She spends hours each week combing the shorelines of the Chesapeake Bay in search of sea glass, bottles, old pottery and marine debris. McCarthy’s interest goes beyond the thrill of the hunt; she has turned beachcombing into an art form. For the past six years, McCarthy has advocated tirelessly for a museum for rare beach finds from around the world. Her dream will become a reality this spring, when The Beachcombing Center debuts its first exhibit on April 3 in Knapps Narrows, on Tilghman Island. The center is dedicated to educating the public on shoreline finds and to increasing awareness about eroding coastlines and marine debris. With plans to open a more permanent location for the museum in the coming months, McCarthy is eager to share her vision with the rest of the world. “It’s always been my hope that beachcombers from around the world would have a home for our finds so that people could visit and learn from them, collectively.” The center will feature rare finds, like tableware, bottles and sharks’ teeth, and have interactive exhibits, such as shell sorting and shark’s-tooth identification. One exhibit will focus on the origins of finds, where a shard of beach glass might be displayed next to the original make and model of the bottle it came from.

COMBING THROUGH HISTORY “Every found piece has a story, and the things we bring back are a testament to our time at the shore,” said Mary McCarthy of her brethren beachcombers, with whom she feels a special bond. For McCarthy, every day begins by checking the tidal charts for low tide before setting off on foot or by kayak.

CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2020
The Beachcombing Center will also have multiple displays on sea glass, including the entire collection from The Sea Glass Center, originally founded in Maine. When McCarthy took over as executive director of The Sea Glass Center three years ago, she worked to save and catalog the sea glass so that it might become a permanent part of the future beachcombing center. Important collections, such as Barbara Bush’s personal sea-glass collection, will go on permanent display in the future space of The Beachcombing Center. She has also received donations for the center from collectors around the world and cherishes the connections she has made through them. “There is a special bond among beachcombers. We all go out on the shore for different reasons, and sometimes we find peace and healing, in addition to whatever we bring home that day,” McCarthy says. “Every found piece has a story, and the things we bring back are a testament to our time at the shore.” When not planning or researching items for the center — her own workspace contains thousands of pieces of sea glass that she identifies and catalogs — McCarthy travels the country, giving lectures on coastal erosion and beachcombing. She also works at sea-glass festivals, doing sea-glass identification. As if she wasn’t busy enough, McCarthy published a children’s book, I See: A Beachcombing Treasure, in 2019 in order to educate children on beachcombing and marine debris. It was only 20 years ago when McCarthy began her beachcombing journey, searching the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay with her own young children. On their first day of exploring, McCarthy found a rare sea-glass marble: a perfectly frosted, orange cat’s-eye marble. McCarthy wondered at the history, context and provenance of her find, and beachcombing quickly evolved from a part-time hobby into a full-time obsession. “Finding that marble changed my life. What began as a journey has truly become my life’s work,” she says.

Every morning McCarthy begins her day by checking the tidal charts and noting low tide, the time when it is best to comb the shore. She sets off on foot or by kayak, carefully scouring beaches, immersing herself in the muck and sand as she looks for even the tiniest finds, like beads and buttons. Often, she is up to her elbows in marsh grass and dirt. “It is not glamorous beachcombing; it’s more like mud larking… boots in the mud,” she says candidly.

CENTER OF ENTHUSIASM Dedicated to educating the public on shoreline discoveries and to increasing awareness about eroding coastlines and marine debris, The Beachcombing Center debuts its first exhibit on April 3 in Knapps Narrows, on Tilghman Island.
She has made rare discoveries over the years, like a small mermaid statue, vintage doll pieces and a glass intaglio carved with the head of the goddess Artemis, who fittingly is the goddess of the hunt. As her collections have grown, McCarthy has become more discriminating with her treasures. She advises beginning beachcombers to keep whatever they find initially and later cultivate a collection based on the items that they truly love. Living her life by the tides has been good to Mary McCarthy. She has amassed an enviable collection as evidence of her years combing beaches, though she is quick to point out that its worth extends beyond its physical value. “I’m always searching, and sometimes all I come back with is the gratitude of knowing that it’s been a day well spent,” she says. “If I’m lucky enough to be on a shoreline that day, then I’m lucky enough.” cs

Sea-ing Success Written by Katie Riley Photography by Grant L. Gursky
St. Michaels entrepreneur Kim Hannon’s love of sea glass led her to create the Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival — now the largest event of its kind in the world 98

G
rowing up near the beach in New Jersey, Kim Hannon never thought much of the shells she would regularly collect from the shores of the Atlantic. “Most of what you find from the ocean is seashells and rocks. It wasn’t until I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area that I began to appreciate the truly unique things I could find on a shoreline,” says Hannon. On her first visit to a beach along the bay, Hannon found an antique miniature bottle, a find she says sparked her 20-year love affair with coastal treasures, particularly sea glass. Hannon’s love of sea glass led her to found the Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival, an event held annually in St. Michaels that is the largest of its kind in the world. “As an artist myself, it’s always been important to promote other artists, and I thought that a festival would be a great way to do that.” During its first year, in 2009, the festival had four artists and a small crowd of attendees, but more artists and events were added each year, such as educational lectures from sea-glass and beachcombing experts. “It was surprising how many people would come each year — through rain, snow, anything. It’s a very specific kind of festival, so it’s really been exciting to watch it grow,” Hannon says. Last year’s festival brought more than 9,000 attendees to the grounds of St. Michaels’ Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where the festival is now held the first weekend of every April. Artists from as far as Hawaii showcase their coastal art and celebrate through music, educational lectures, food, drink and art exhibits. Now in its ninth year, this year’s festival will feature more than 90 artisans, live music and coastal experts, like Dr. Beachcomb, Mary McCarthy and photographer Jay Fleming. The festival showcases artists working in all media, like Sandra Webberking, a metal sculptor who fashions firepits from recycled propane tanks. Another returning artist, Larry Ringgold, exhibits and sells life-size animal sculptures made from driftwood. Painters, jewelry craftsman, woodworkers and sculptors exhibit and sell their work during both days of the festival.

“It’s amazing to see what someone can create with the coast as their inspiration,” says Hannon. “Every single piece of art at the festival is unique. That’s definitely the appeal for the crowds that show up to see what’s new each year.” Hannon has spent most of her life surrounded by art, and it was a natural progression when she began painting and crafting at an early age. “My grandmother was a painter in Cape May, and I had an affinity for art early on; art and the beach are my two great loves,” she says. Not only does she organize and promote the festival each year, she sells coastal art year-round in her store in St. Michaels, Ophiuroidea, named for the starfish-like marine animals. Ophiuroidea, or The O, as locals call it, sells authentic sea-glass jewelry, pottery, clothing and home décor made from coastal artisans. Last year, a second location opened, in Kent Narrows in Grasonville. In addition to organizing each year’s festival and operating her stores, she serves as president of the North American Sea Glass Association, an organization dedicated to the education about and appreciation of genuine sea glass. Every year she attends sea-glass festivals around the region and enjoys connecting with hundreds of sea-glass lovers from around the world.

As founder of a renowned arts festival and owner of two coastal arts stores, Hannon never dreamed that a walk on the beach would lead her to where she is now. She doesn’t have much time for beachcombing these days, but her love of sea glass remains as ardent as ever. “It’s hard to explain the appeal,” Hannon said. “I’m not sure if it’s the history behind each seaglass find or the idea that something that was once thrown away is now worth saving. It’s an evolution of the most beautiful kind.” The 9th Annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival will take place at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels on April 4-5. Featuring the work of more than 90 artisans from across the United States, the festival also includes lectures from sea-glass experts, such as Mary McCarthy and Dr. Beachcomb, and a keynote lecture from award-winning Chesapeake Bay photographer Jay Fleming. Live music by Pressing Strings, Jayme Digler, John Belser and other local musicians. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, including beer, wine and cocktails. Ticket price includes admission for both days and entrance to the historic Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. For more, visit SeaGlassFestival.com. cs

The Legend Legendary Continues Discoveries TIM MARSHALL’S PASSIONATE QUEST TO REVEAL THE SECRETS OF SMITH ISLAND’S ANCIENT PAST CONTINUES Story by Joe Willey Photos by Jay Fleming

CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2020
TINY TREASURES Though they may not resemble precious gems, the artifacts that Tim Marshall combs the shoreline of Smith Island for are equally valuable for the stories they tell about the island’s past.
T
he Chesapeake Bay has a long history. Just walking along its shores and marshes can bring you in contact with pieces of the past. Though the region is replete with shoreline, some spots are more vibrantly flooded with memories. These jewels of the bay are not sapphires or rubies but arrowheads and artifacts, and no one is better at finding them than Smith Islander Tim Marshall. Marshall was born and has lived his whole life on Smith Island. Exhibiting an intimate knowledge of the island and its terrain, he knows where to find bits of the past that are deposited in the mud and sand of the shoreline. He has been hunting for American Indian artifacts for over 30 years, and the hunt for arrowheads and artifacts continues to fascinate him. He also shares his experience and keen eye by acting as a guide for visitors who are intrigued about the history of the bay and want to find their own fragments of history. Erosion has depleted the acreage of Smith Island, but it has also proved to be a boon for artifact hunting. “The marsh shorelines used to be the forest, and all you’ll find is projectiles because that used to be the hunting land,” he says with his twangy Smith Island dialect. But he is not concerned that Smith Island will soon wash into the bay. “I know I won’t be here in 50 years, but this island will be here in 150 years.”

FINDERS KEEPERS All of Marshall’s finds are significant, some dating back thousands of years. Many are vestiges of the migration of the early hunters and inhabitants from other regions who brought projectiles made of non-native stone.
Marshall’s quest to find treasures from ancient civilizations was purely practical at first. “When there was nothing to do on the island, I tended to [hunt for arrowheads],” he said. But he is aware that his onetime walk through the marshy shoreline to fight boredom grew into a passion. He recognizes that the historical record can be elusive to document; as easily as something may wash up on the shore, it can also disappear. He knows that his collection is significant. “I've been out here, hunting it, finding it and saving it.” Marshall displays more than 30 years of artifact hunting in cases in his small museum in the Smith Island town of Ewell. Each case beautifully displays a group of projectiles, carefully arranged with pieces fanning out in a nimbus of flint. With encyclopedic ease, he can show a visitor a spearpoint or arrowhead and quickly date the period in which it was used. His finds have been important and date back thousands of years, showing the migration of the early hunters and inhabitants from other regions who brought projectiles made of non-native stone.

SANDS OF TIME More than 30 years after his first discovery, Marshall continues to be fascinated by each new American Indian relic he unearths from the wet sands of Smith Island.
Tim Marshall’s laid-back perseverance has captured artifacts of the past that others may have let wash away or settle back into the mud of the bay. He continues to capture the memories made of stone that were used for survival and now gives us a glimpse into the distant past. His finds have been a treasure. “It takes a lot to hunt this stuff,” he said, gesturing toward the arrowhead collection. “You have to repeatedly walk these shorelines, and I've walked them more than anyone.” cs
