LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE
Denney Lighting & Design shines the spotlight on some of the brightest styles on the market 1. Farmhouse-influenced bath lighting, combining wood
and metal finishes, are fun additions to powder rooms or bathrooms. Finishes, including whitewashed, natural pine and darker stained-wood tones, are often paired with clear or clear seedy glass shades and outfitted with vintage-style bulbs.
2. Vintage bulbs in a variety of shapes, color
temperatures and light outputs (lumens) are popular for all types of decorative fixtures. LED and incandescent options offer great light quality that can vary from warm to white and the ability to dim for full lighting control, when paired with the proper dimmer.
3. Statement chandeliers with interesting glass and finishes continue to be popular. Designs vary, but elements like clear seedy and prismatic glass and finishes of gold, black, bronze and nickel are key elements to many designer fixtures. Mid-century modern chandeliers offer style for any dĂŠcor.
4. Linear chandeliers, ranging from simple structures
3 38  COASTAL STYLE / May-June 2019
to more detailed designs, offer scale and balance to banquet-length tables and kitchen islands. Popular finishes include mixed metals, like this bronze/antique brass combination, as well as matte black, bronze, iron gray, chrome and satin-nickel finishes.

7 5. Outdoor patios and porches are perfect for wet-rated chandeliers and pendants. Make your space an extension of your home with fixtures that offer form, function and fabulous ambiance.
6. Thin ½”-thick LED surface/recessed lighting are the perfect solutions for low ceilings in condominiums and beach
cottages. They produce more lumens per fixture than a standard recessed light. Available in many sizes, light color temperatures and trim finishes. They are fully dimmable and can be used to create “recessed” lighting in spaces that have shallow ceilings, since no can/box is required for installation.
7. All outdoor fixtures aren’t created equally. Coastal-rated fixtures, including this beauty in a composite material that looks like metal, withstand the harsh elements without fading, chipping or peeling. These coastal-rated fixtures have 5-year finish warranties and are available in a variety of styles and colors.
8. Sleek, energy-efficient DC motor fans are both quiet and powerful. Using an average of 75% less electricity than
standard AC motor fans, they reduce heating and cooling costs year-round. Various models offer upgraded features, like larger diameters (up to 8 feet), handheld remotes, remote reversing and smart-home compatibility. Denney Lighting & Design | 302-934-8885 | DenneyLightingDesign.com

ngie Gillis Unkart has always maintained a passion for discovering and enhancing the beauty in all things. The lifelong Eastern Shore resident put this drive to good use while managing her popular interior-design business for over 20 years. When the economic crisis occurred, the interior-design industry took an especially large hit, and Angie was left searching for what to pursue next. Rather than completely reinvent

herself, Angie chose to leverage her design experience, people skills and natural creativity to steer her career in a slightly different direction: managing special events. Fast-forward nine years, and Encore Events by Angie is an award-winning, full-service event-management company, which includes event planning, day-of coordination, in-house florist services and unique rentals and props from Encore’s new, one-of-a-kind rental warehouse. This all-encompassing
business model helps to ensure consistency while eliminating the stress and communication issues often rooted in logistics and coordination of several different vendors. “Because Encore Events is a fullservice event company, I oversee each and every aspect of the event,” said Angie. “I make absolutely certain that the event day flows smoothly, and in the case of weddings, is precisely what a client envisions.” Angie’s approach to wedding planning has allowed her to form a unique bond with each bride. For Angie, listening is the key to establishing trust and understanding the bride and her vision. “The first thing I do is assure her that no matter what the style, feel, look or budget, it is of the utmost importance to me that it is all about her,” she said.

“I oversee each and every aspect of the event and make absolutely certain that the event day flows smoothly, and in the case of weddings, is precisely as the client envisioned.” — Angie Gillis Unkart
In the early stages of the weddingplanning process, brides typically provide Angie with a source of inspiration. Angie then uses this as a foundation to build a setting and style tailored to each bride. She employs her design background to ensure every detail is executed flawlessly. Angie’s massive warehouse, which she humorously refers to as “Pinterest on steroids,” houses thousands of props, backdrops and décor pieces, such as vases, chandeliers, lighting and accents. She frequently calls upon her interiordesign contacts to source pieces from all over the world, and she’s always looking to add to her collection. Her most recent shipment arrived from Germany and included an elegant carnival-ride display and exquisite Champagne bottle holder. Modification requests to any of Angie’s props are always accommodated to meet the brides’ needs. These changes are often

brought to life by Angie’s husband, Eric, who is also heavily involved in Encore Events and an expert craftsman. While she has experience managing events at many reputable venues across the Shore, Angie is proud to also offer exclusive access at two stunning, locally cherished establishments: The Rackliffe House and Windmill Creek Vineyard. The Rackliffe House offers picturesque water views and a secluded location, while Windmill Creek Vineyard presents a charming wildflower-filled setting and lovely wine bar, among other amenities. “There is always something to be said for being unique and original. This is what I strive for in my business, and these locations offer exactly that,” Angie said. Encore Events also coordinates and manages bridal showers, birthday parties, retirement parties, baby showers, corporate events and private, in-home dinner parties.

Jim’s stormy relationship with a younger black woman as they search for a lost Scott Joplin opera, inspired by a mysterious radio personality named the Wizard.
BOOK SMART
J
erry Sweeney, one of the Eastern Shore’s most prolific novelists, is back, with the latest — and final — installment of his Columbiad series. Officially released on the century anniversary of the WWI armistice, Comes the Electric Circus is Book 5 in the chronology of the seven-title series. Columbiad traverses the unpredictable and turbulent 20th century, into the modern age, as seen through the eyes of its protagonists, the Mahoney family of Chicago. Comes the Electric Circus is the third series title that CSM has reviewed in Book Smart. It is also the final release, so Book Smart has decided to recap the entire Columbiad series, as it is essentially a single saga narrative comprising several standalone installments.
BOOK SEVEN: Wizard Ho! is a
quest novel set in Manhattan, where a band of artists searches for an elusive radio host who operates a clandestine station hidden amid the towers of New York City. In Comes the Electric Circus, it is the 1950s, and America is riding high in the aftermath of WWII. While Jim appreciates the relative peace of the age, the cultural and intellectual blandness has him yearning for something more. The book follows Jim during this tepid period as he is forced, in order to pay the bills, to take a job in sales at a magazine called Suave (a roman-à-clef-style representation of Playboy),
QUITE THE JOURNEY BOOK ONE: Eagles Rising details the
turn-of-the-century transition of an IrishAmerican family named O’Mahoney from their Iowa homestead to Chicago, where they become the unwitting participants in the Windy City’s gangster, labor and racial wars. BOOK TWO: First Lights chronicles the
early years of Jim Mahoney, following the death of his father, John-Arthur, and his frightening childhood in Chicago in the wake of the Great Depression. Now in Manhasset, NY, Jim battles to reconcile his inner spiritual ambivalence against the backdrop of the restrictive religious, social and economic mores of the time, as the country drifts toward war. BOOK THREE: Crashing Into Sunrise
follows Jim through the chaos of his teenage years in the 1940s, into college, where he finds peace through intellectual

After many years, Delmarva novelist Gerald Sweeney wraps up his ‘Columbiad’ saga with the release of Book Five, ‘Comes the Electric Circus’ WRITTEN BY NICK BRANDI PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY TODD ENGEL, BOOKLOCKER
enlightenment and excitement through the discovery of love. BOOK FOUR: A Tournament of a
Distinguished White Order sees Jim, now a private in the U.S. Army, during the Korean War as he somewhat clumsily struggles to navigate a passionate romantic relationship with an aspiring actress named Fawn Evans. BOOK SIX: Yo Columbia is set in the New
York publishing world of the 1980s and
complete with a robe-wearing, libertine editor-in-chief named Hal Heller and lots of comely young women au naturel gracing its glossy pages. Despite his moral ambivalence, Jim works earnestly in a corporate world in which he does not really belong so that he can support his beautiful wife, Alice, who abandoned a promising career in broadcasting to make a proper (read: traditional) home for Jim and the children they would have. Eventually, after years of slogging through a sometimes soul-crushing vocational existence, Jim is presented an opportunity to make a bold and risky move, one that will either elevate him to a station of self-fulfillment or thrust his family into potential ruin. Among the variety of Columbiad novels Book Smart has experienced, and thoroughly enjoyed, Comes the Electric Circus is not the prime exponent
of plot twists and intrigue, so any lust for pulse-pounding, page-turning literary entertainment should have you reaching elsewhere on the bookshelf. And even though every installment of the Columbiad series is written to be a standalone novel, one does get the distinct impression that there is a fair amount of groundwork being laid here in anticipation of Book Six and perhaps beyond. What is also interesting is that Sweeney, who has proved himself particularly adept at writing about romantic love and passion, presented it more desperately and vividly in Jim’s tempestuous relationship with the vertiginous Fawn Evans, back in Book Four, than with lovely Alice Casey, the woman he would ultimately marry and have children with. Is it because Alice herself is an allegorical representation of the tepid times in which Book Five is set or that Alice is simply not the love of Jim’s life? Only Sweeney knows for sure, but the contrast is clear. But that isn’t the only trick up Sweeney’s literary sleeve. He is also
masterful at capturing the zeitgeist of an era, sprinkling in at just the right measure of the names, places and political climates that composed American society at any given time,
and this is no less true in Comes the Electric Circus. Sweeney deftly teases the reader to the awakening world with invocations of John F. Kennedy and Joan Baez and what they would come to mean to the world in just a few short years and for many generations to follow. Another interesting concurrence in time is that protagonist Jim Mahoney is a longtime socialist (but definitely not a communist), which may have put him contentiously ahead of the times then but is eerily portentous of the political climate in which we find ourselves now. In other words, Jim would have been a Bernie guy, not a Hillary guy. If the ultimate goal of Book Five, Comes the Electric Circus, was not only to elegantly tell the story of the tumultuous transition to the 1960s but also to whet my appetite for Book Six, I’d say Sweeney did his job — again. The Columbiad is available online through www.booklocker.com and Amazon. You can order directly from the author at Sweeney gf@aol.com.

Each piece features the acronym FHG — For His Glory — on the front of each canvas and his name on the back, because it has taken faith, inside and out, for this onetime atheist to use his Godgiven artistic gift For His Glory. He publicizes his work through local art leagues. Smith finished third in a month-long Art League of Ocean City show in January for a drawing, in graphite and colored pencil, of a crab basket. He will be entering more pieces in future Ocean City League shows. He has turned his focus to drawings of Ocean City, Assateague Island and the Chesapeake Bay region. After a brief stint on the boardwalk last summer, Smith plans to spend more time this summer showing Ocean City residents and tourists the unique passion that lies within him. His faith, family and art are everything to Smith. “That’s why I will never stop creating art as long as I can move,” he said. “I’ve never stuck to anything ever. I’m just not that kind of personality. But there’s something good about following through. There’s no stopping this.”

F
lea Market 13 & Antiques on Route 13 in Pocomoke City is a feast for any antique memorabilia collector’s eyes — and nose and mouth, thanks to the fresh peanuts made on a genuine peanut roaster from the 1800s. Owner Dean Guy opened his home-away-from-home in 2004, showcasing many of the priceless collectibles he's acquired over the years and attracting people not only from all over the Eastern Shore but from across the globe. Many visitors traveling Rte. 13 to

destinations along the East Coast make unscheduled detours back in time to peruse collectibles they may not have seen since childhood, if at all. Others travel from much farther away — as in the case of two gentlemen from Germany, who, twice a year, come to examine Guy’s larger keepsakes. Whether it’s vintage cars, from a Camaro and Corvette to well-preserved trucks, to the classic gasoline pumps lined alongside powerful pieces of timeless art — Guy’s collection both delights and inspires. He showcases
engines from the 1800s in the back of the building, which isn’t far from a vendor selling furniture from different eras, oldtime bottles and oyster cans. “If I like it, hopefully somebody else will like it,” Guy said of the thought process behind adding to his collection. Flea Market 13 & Antiques has attracted roughly 25 vendors (and counting) from across the Eastern Shore who sell their collectibles here. But to Guy, it’s not a store. There are no price tags on his items, just memories from a lifelong passion for uncovering treasures.

Guy said he has no favorites, although Flea Market 13 & Antiques’ manager, Mikki Hodgins, figures it’s a Case Old Abe statue he purchased from a collector a decade ago. This cast-iron statue of an eagle perched on a globe, which Guy said could be found in front of Case farm-equipment dealerships in the late 1920s and early 1930s, sits front and
center near the entrance. Most were destroyed when individual dealerships closed, which Guy said has made the remaining originals quite valuable. “It’s my own personal collection. They’re all my favorites,” said Guy, who spent three decades as a commercial pilot for Piedmont Airlines. “I’ve found items, run across items at sales, just here
and there, digging around barns, and every now and then from someone who doesn’t know what they’ve got. They’ll give something away, and I’ll clean it, paint it and work on it until it’s just the way I like it.” “Dean doesn’t like to part with anything,” Mikki said. “He likes everything. It all started with Ocean City... As I sat at the table, addressing our 2018 holiday card to Atlantic Shores Realty, I had to pause. My heart immediately filled with so many OC memories that I had to pen one additional message: “Ryan, it all started with High Point North.” In writing this simple note, I wanted to make sure that Atlantic Shores Realty, and Ryan Haley in particular, understood what an impact our OC condo had on our family. It was Ryan who helped us embark on our beach dream, with the purchase of a beautiful condo at High Point North, and it was he who helped us sell that condo when a new beach adventure in Hawaii came calling.
5-Star Rated
As native Marylanders, my husband and I had grown up with vivid memories of summer vacations on the Eastern Shore, recalling the joy that Ocean City brought to us as children. Cruising the boardwalk, picking crabs, stopping at Candy Kitchen for treats, amusement-park rides and the endless beach walks were all experiences forever etched into our memories. Naturally, we wanted to pass along that joy and those memories to our two little girls, Chloe, 4, and Camille, 2. You see, it was that special little condo on the seventh floor that really started our journey to Hawaii. We will always cherish that time on our balcony, watching the waves crash below, taking in the many sunrises and feeling the cool ocean breezes. How our family time and quality of life changed was truly priceless. While selling properties in preparation for the Hawaii move, it was the sale of our little condo that hit us the hardest, with many tears having flowed that day. We truly believe that if we did not experience Ocean City at that time in our family’s lives, we may never have taken the leap of faith to pursue a career opportunity in Hawaii. Although living in Hawaii is indeed paradise, Ocean City will forever have a special place in our hearts. The experience of owning that condo gave us so much more than we could have ever imagined. We are grateful to Ryan and Atlantic Shores Realty for their honest guidance, realistic expectations and open collaboration from start to finish.

The Art League of Ocean City teamed up with Diakonia for The Empty Bowl Project, an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and a unique opportunity to use art in a way that helps the community WRITTEN BY VICTOR FERNANDES • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELAINE BEAN
The Empty Bowl Project fills the hearts of those involved, because they provide meals to those in need in a unique way. The successful collaboration from local nonprofits The Art League of Ocean City and Diakonia to raise awareness and funds for hunger began its fifth year in June 2018 with Clay-apalooza. The Lower Shore community, from students at local schools to staff members at local organizations, created clay bowls that headlined the Empty Bowl Soup Dinner on March 29 at Ocean City Center for the Arts. Ongoing bowl sales, which bear the “Empty Bowl Project” stamp, have helped raise nearly $10,000 and counting for Diakonia, which for more than 40 years has assisted residents of Worcester County and the Lower Shore with food, clothing, shelter and other needed resources.

The dinner featured soups from eight local restaurants — cream of crab and corn chowder from Embers Restaurant, Blu Crabhouse & Raw Bar and Mad Fish Bar; Off The Hook Restaurant Group’s corn and crab jalapeño bisque; Liquid Assets’ beef chili; Mother’s Cantina’s roasted tomato; The Original Greene Turtle’s chicken and dumpling; Seacrets’ creamy basil tomato; and Sunset Grille’s chicken tortilla. Community members who made bowls attended for free. “It becomes a way to bring people together to start the conversation about hunger and homelessness,” said Rina Thaler, president of The Art League of Ocean City and Ocean City Center for the Arts. “We have a lot of people that struggle with food insecurity and homelessness. It’s a huge issue that we deal with every day,” Diakonia president Allyson BernardChurch said. “The businesses and the restaurants are great, and the community really comes out and supports us. When people come to the event and make the bowls, it’s a constant reminder.” The fundraiser continues into the sixth annual Clay-apalooza on June 22-23.

TO GIVE: It’s defined as the “act of presenting voluntarily and
without expecting compensation.” It’s how Marie Waller lived all 102 years of her life — the majority of which were spent in a modest family home at 409 Royal Street in Salisbury with her husband, Ed, and their three children. Built in 1940, their three-bedroom residence was located in what was widely regarded as one of the city’s great neighborhoods for its closeknit collection of genuine, hardworking residents. Born in 1911 on a farm in Laurel, DE, Marie earned a nursing degree from Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing in Salisbury in 1934. For the next 50 years, she dedicated her life to caring for those in need as a private-duty and general-duty nurse at Peninsula General Hospital — known today as Peninsula Regional Medical Center — located just a stone’s throw from her home. “She was a nurse first and foremost. Always a caregiver at work and at home,” said Rosemary Cupp, Marie’s only daughter, who worked as a nurse practitioner at Salisbury State College for 26 years. “I remember her putting on her nurse’s cape and walking around the corner to work. She looked like a superhero. She worked many double shifts to help my brothers and me get an education.” Bryan LeCompte, the successful owner of Yard Designs, Inc., knows of Marie Waller’s graciousness and generous nature firsthand. As a close friend of her grandson, Sean Cupp, Bryan spent countless days and nights at the Waller home growing up, including many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. He quickly and affectionately earned the distinction of the family’s adopted neighborhood son and grandson, and “Granny Marie” as he called her, became a very instrumental figure in his life, as she and her family welcomed Bryan unconditionally. “If you met her, you’d never forget her,” Bryan said. “When I started my business in the late ’80s, she and Ed were getting older, and I began helping to take care of them and the property with Rosemary and Jim. An addition was built to the back of the home in the ’90s. They were unable to get up and down the steps then, so a bedroom, bathroom and living area were created on the main level.” Marie remained in the home until her passing in February 2014, and the Waller home sat vacant before it was sold to the hospital in 2016. As PRMC’s campus development progressed, the home was the last structure standing from the old neighborhood. Surrounded on all sides by parking lots, it was to be demolished to make room for additional spaces.

That would have happened if not for a dream LeCompte, a PRMC Foundation board member, had in April 2017. In it, he was able to save the home, renovate it and see the Foundation use it as their headquarters. With that, his “Giving House” idea was born. “I wanted the concept to be modeled after Marie,” Bryan said. “I asked the hospital for permission to propose a concept and rendering for consideration. It was granted, and I then asked for a resolution in which the house could never be named after anyone. It would forever remain The Giving House, and its only use would be as the home of the Foundation.”
A FOUNDATION’S NEW HOME THE PENINSULA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION was established in 1993 and for the past 19 years
has been directed by its president, Denise Billing. Supported by its board of directors and under her guidance, the Foundation has raised more than $35 million to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, patient-care services, education programs for professional and support staff, community-education programs, health screenings, and facility improvement and expansion. Major capital campaigns funded by the Foundation during her tenure include the Layfield Tower project, expansions of the facility’s emergency department and operating rooms, the laborand-delivery-unit renovation, the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute Ocean Pines and the Rebecca and Leighton Moore Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit, among many others. Since its inception, Foundation offices were located on the second floor of the hospital’s education building — one of the more dated structures on its campus. Thanks to LeCompte’s vision, the Foundation now calls The Giving House home. But it wasn’t as simple as turning over a set of keys. The old, 2,000 sq. ft. Waller home underwent a massive renovation that began in February 2018 and lasted a full year. LeCompte was on the jobsite every day from July through December, including
68 COASTAL STYLE / May-June 2019
weekends and nights, and donated a significant amount of his own money to the effort. The entire home was refurbished, including new electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, as well as new flooring, windows, doors and roofing, among many other substantial improvements. “I get goosebumps talking about it because of the passion I have for this project,” Bryan said. “Granny inspired me, and I wanted to put my heart and soul into this home to pay tribute to her and pay it forward to the Foundation, which does so much for our community.” Denise, Megan [Caton], Barbara [O’Neill] and Debbie [Suska] are the rocks of our Foundation,” LeCompte continued. “They are the ones getting it done every day. Their job is often thankless, and they should be commended. I’m happy I was able to create something that honors them and the importance of what they do for our community.”
PRESERVING HISTORY THROUGHOUT THE GIVING HOUSE, Bryan pays tribute to the
Wallers, as well as influential figures in the storied history of PRMC. The old living room is now the Foundation’s conference room, handsomely outfitted with a custom farmhouse table and Windsor chairs and walls adorned with historic photos and shadow boxes containing precious keepsakes from Marie’s career. Founding hospital member Dr. William Todd and his grandson, Dr. Nevins Todd Jr., a member of the PRMC staff for 33 years who performed the Eastern Shore’s first open-heart surgery in 1974, are represented in portraits; William’s photo from the 1800s is one of a precious few known to be in existence. Another wall honors the many accomplishments of Virginia Layfield, who worked for PRMC for 43 years, beginning as an emergency-room supervisor and ending as PRMC’s first woman president. The home’s dining room and kitchen were converted into a reception and seating area, which contains Dr. Nevins
Todd’s original microscope and operating glasses, as well as a recording log from the early 1900s in which hospital staff documented admissions, ailments, the cost of treatment and a patient’s diagnosis. One inscription reads: “Patient. Appendicitis. $12. Improved.” Bryan also decorated the entire house and personally secured all of its antiques and furnishings, while paying homage to Salisbury’s poultry and Wicomico River industries in the process.
THE COMMUNITY GIVES BACK IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH the substantial renovation,
LeCompte initiated a fundraising campaign, but not a traditional one. He used The Giving House mantra, “Every home needs a foundation, and every foundation needs a home,” to connect with businesses for in-kind donations of materials and labor. Palmer Gillis was first to join, playing a vital role during construction, as did key supporters Dave Rommel and Joe Zimmer. Dozens of companies contributed to the cause. LeCompte’s trademark design skills and craftsmanship are displayed throughout the grounds. It’s here that he expressed his gratitude to those who have made significant contributions to the house and entities across the Eastern Shore. The fireplace and Giving Ring “acknowledges people such as Leighton Moore, chairman of our Foundation board, and his wife, Rebecca, the Guerrieri family, Frank Hanna, Ed Wilgus and Jim Perdue, to name just a few, for their generous donations to our community, including the PRMC Foundation,” Bryan said. Leighton’s Pavilion, a substantial, custom shade structure, which contains a 410-lb stainless-steel commemorative plaque, offers views to the hospital’s emergency helipad across the street, which the Moores were chiefly responsible for funding. Additional recognition opportunities exist along the brick walkways that encompass the property, as well as naming rights to its cherry trees. Bryan also strategically designed the yard to accommodate large social gatherings and fundraisers.
THE SPIRIT OF GIVING “MY HOPE IS THIS HOUSE and its story will inspire others
in our community to realize that they can make a difference,” LeCompte said. “Your $5 contribution matters. Your three hours of volunteering for a golf tournament, contributing a silent auction item to one of our events or being a part of our annual Gala matters. It matters just as much as a $500 check or a $500,000 check.” “Bryan has taken something that was really knock-down worthy and transformed it into a knockout,” Billing said. “Now, we have a beautiful place to work on a daily basis and to host parties, events and donors. It is a very comfortable and warm environment, and we can’t thank everyone enough who contributed to its renovation. We’re really proud to call it home.” The Foundation recently honored Bryan’s Giving House efforts by renaming Old West Vine Street, which is now Bryan LeCompte Way.
THE FORMAL GIVING HOUSE DEDICATION LECOMPTE AND BILLING will be joined by hospital, civic,
business and community leaders on May 9, when The Giving House will be formally dedicated to the Foundation. Rosemary Cupp will be there, too. The 78-year-old great-grandmother intends to stand proudly in support of her adopted son. “I think I’ll feel more emotion for Bryan than I will to the house,” Rosemary said. “The house is a part of me and our family, but seeing Bryan’s vision come to fruition will be very emotional.” I don’t think there are many days that Bryan doesn’t think of my mom,” she continued. “That sense of family we felt when he would stay with us in our home, through the good times and bad, provided him unconditional love, and that love was returned by him. He’s truly one-of-a-kind. I’ve never met anyone like Bryan; I don’t think I ever will.” CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 69

BEEBE VASCULAR SERVICES: ADVANCED TREATMENT FOR YOUR VEIN HEALTH Kevin Caldwell, MD, Sean Ryan, MD, and Carlos Neves, MD
Not only does Beebe Vascular boast the only accredited vein center in Delaware, it’s coupled with a care team that makes sure each patient’s vein concerns are treated and resolved compassionately and efficiently. Accreditation is the gold standard for vein centers, and achieving it means that Beebe’s Vein Center has demonstrated a commitment to quality patient care in vein treatment and management. Through accreditation, Beebe Vein Center has proven to be a dedicated team that achieves excellent results. The care team is led by board-certified vascular surgeons Sean Ryan, MD, and Carlos Neves, MD, and board-eligible vascular surgeon Kevin Caldwell, MD, who joined the practice in the past year. Free monthly screening sessions include an educational presentation, allowing participants to ask questions. The doctors, along with Beverly Wells, NP, meet regularly with patients to talk about the variety of
illnesses and issues that can affect our veins. “Often, patients will have noticed leg pain or fatigue, but they may never have associated those issues with their veins,” Dr. Ryan said. “We don’t really think about our veins until we have a problem or until you come to a screening and learn there is an issue.” Common risk factors for vein disease include: • Age and family history • Females are often at more risk for vein issues both during pregnancy and in later years • Obesity or being overweight • Standing or sitting for long periods of time.
Construction is ongoing at the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus for a new hybrid operating room – the first of its kind in Sussex County. A hybrid operating room gives the surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, radiology technicians and other specialists the ability to collaborate seamlessly together with more advanced technology during surgery. Complex imaging equipment allows surgeons to have real-time access and visibility of peripheral arteries within the body while they are working to repair or bypass blockages. This new surgical theater will provide patients with the highest-quality care, close to home.
“If you experience swelling, aching or changes in your skin color, you should talk to your doctor or call us to set up a consultation,” said Dr. Neves. The vascular surgeons also perform complex vascular procedures.
These projects and many of the projects at Beebe Healthcare are made possible by generous donations from the community through Beebe Medical Foundation. To learn more about donating, visit BeebeMedicalFoundation.org or call 302-644-2900.

PENINSULA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER INDUSTRY LEADERS IN SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS
For those who qualify for surgical weight loss, Peninsula Regional Medical Center offers an award-winning bariatric surgery program that has helped more than 3,000 patients lose weight since its inception. Candidates for bariatric surgery include patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 35 who have a co-morbidity — such as diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea — or patients with a BMI above 40 who do not have a co-morbidity. Potential patients meet with a surgeon to determine if they are a candidate for surgery and what type is most appropriate. Three bariatric surgeons – Dr. Brion McCutcheon, MD, FACS, Dr. Un Chin, MD, FACS, and Dr. William Haberlin, MD, FACS — perform a wide variety of procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch and revisional surgeries.
For patients who are not candidates for surgical weight loss or who do not want to commit to a surgical procedure, a medical weight-loss option is available and provided by CoreLife. On Delmarva, Peninsula Regional Health System is the exclusive partner. CoreLife provides the preoperative nutrition and psychological evaluations required by most insurance companies for bariatric surgery. They can also help patients lose weight preoperatively to achieve a safer weight before surgery, potentially decreasing surgical complication risks. “Being overweight can cause multiple medical problems including diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, coronary heart disease, back and joint pain and even increases the risk of several types of cancer,” Dr. McCutcheon said. “We are dedicated to helping our patients and enhancing their quality of life.”
While surgery can be the appropriate course of treatment for many, Dr. Chin counsels patients that surgery alone does not provide the best chance for weight loss. “Both nutritional counseling and exercise are required,” he said. PRMC was the first hospital on the Eastern Shore to be named a Center of Excellence by both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery; it is designated a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield; and it has been named a Bariatric Institute of Quality by Aetna. CORELIFE DELMARVA HELPING YOU TAKE OFF THE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF
In the few short months since she joined CoreLife Delmarva, Mildred “Micki” Neuhauser has dropped 23 pounds. “My experience has been excellent,” she said. “I never realized just how easy it could be to lose weight. It’s not a fad diet; it’s a way of life.” CoreLife is an innovative preventive healthcare company focusing on overweight and obese individuals. Each center features a unique model that combines professionals in medicine, nutrition, exercise and behavior, all located in a convenient and compassionate environment. The inspiration for the business came from owner Sean Kostkowski’s personal experiences. Growing up, his brother struggled with weight loss and was often given the same advice: Eat less, exercise more. “That’s not a realistic solution for a lot of people,” he said. “I wondered, What if there were a place that could create a personalized, holistic plan for each
patient, but that kind of place simply didn’t exist.” In 2012, CoreLife was born. Kostkowski now operates 19 locations, with plans to open 50 more in 2019. These new facilities will span the East Coast, from Annapolis, Frederick, Columbia and Bel Air, MD, to Alabama and North Carolina. On Delmarva, Peninsula Regional Health System is the exclusive partner. Each CoreLife facility is between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet and features a medical office staffed by licensed medical practitioners, registered dietitians and private fitness studios with exercise equipment and dedicated trainers. Every patient has an initial consultation to assess his or her goals, sleep, stress, etc. Patients have bloodwork and metabolic testing and then meet with a provider who conducts a physical and develops a care plan. From there, patients meet with a registered dietician who creates an individualized meal plan.
Appointments are scheduled weekly and always involve consultations with a medical provider and a dietician. “This is not just some fly-by-night weight-loss program; it’s true healthy living,” said Rhonda Snyder, who has been a member of CoreLife for about four months. “They are helping you make changes that you can live with forever. Snyder, who sees the number on the scale drop at every visit, says the staff not only gives you the tools you need to succeed, but they offer knowledge and emotional support every step of the way. “They give you contact information for the doctor, dietician and all of the support people, so you can call or email them whenever you need to — and they get back to you right away,” she said. “I feel like I have a whole team of people working with me, and it works because I don’t want to disappoint the team.”

TILGHMAN ORTHODONTICS: CUSTOMIZED CARE TAILORED TO EACH PATIENT'S NEEDS Dr. Michael Tilghman and Dr. Carrie Schwartz
Integrity and innovation — they are the hallmarks of Tilghman Orthodontics — the award-winning orthodontic practice led by industry experts Drs. Michael Tilghman and Carrie Schwartz. With more than 40 combined years of experience, Drs. Tilghman and Schwartz, along with their dedicated and highly skilled team, create beautiful smiles every day through their unwavering commitment to genuine patient care and the most efficient, time-proven treatments. Tilghman Orthodontics uses state-of-the-art technology to create customized treatment plans for each patient, while maintaining open communication and transparency throughout the entire process. The practice’s collective emphasis on comprehensive examinations and detail-specific treatment plans ensures that each patient receives the appliance or procedure that’s in their best interest. That’s not necessarily the case throughout the industry. Dr. Tilghman stated that some teens and
adults who visit their Salisbury and Berlin offices may not require as much orthodontic treatment as others. Some have minor issues, such as mild overcrowding and spacing, which can be resolved at a faster pace than those with moderate-to-severe cases. “The bottom line is that one plan doesn’t fit every patient,” Dr. Tilghman said. “Our treatments are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. We take great pride in that. One may require metal braces, while another is best suited for aligners. We will only proceed with a plan that’s best for them.” A new-patient visit to Tilghman Orthodontics starts with a complete clinical examination. “We’re unique the moment you walk in the door,” Dr. Tilghman said. “From our friendly staff to the care you’re going to receive, the amount of time we spend during the consultation and evaluation and the records we take, our only goal is to determine the plan that’s best. This is how our patients achieve great smiles.”
The practice is also highly regarded for its commitment to remaining at the forefront of technology. One such example is its very own Smiles Correct aligners — a new, affordable solution that serves as an alternative to traditional braces or Invisalign treatments. As one of the Shore’s first practices to fabricate its own aligners in-house, Smiles Correct offers patients faster turnaround, lower costs and better quality control than other aligner manufacturers. Through the use of a handheld device, scans are taken inside the mouth to create a computerized three-dimensional model of the patient’s teeth. A digital version is sent to Tilghman Orthodontics’ 3D printer, which produces a replica to scale, and the custom aligner trays are created. “Smiles Correct may be the ideal solution for a patient, but it also may not,” Dr. Tilghman said. “We will only do what’s best for the patient.”

JONATHAN C. PATROWICZ, D.O.: PROVIDING PATIENTS GENUINE, COMPASSIONATE CARE
The current trends in today’s medical field often leave doctors with little time to consult and connect with their patients. Dr. Jonathan C. Patrowicz has always chosen to take a different approach to patient care. Dr. Patrowicz has fostered strong, communicative relationships with generations of families who have entrusted the popular Salisbury family physician with their healthcare for the past 20 years. Dr. Patrowicz’s philosophy is simple: Every patient deserves to be treated with the utmost care and respect, no matter how long that takes. This ideal extends throughout Dr. Patrowicz’s practice on Sweetbay Drive, which is supported by his longtime colleague and certified registered nurse practitioner, Tanya Poisker, and its experienced and dedicated 10-person support team. Collectively, they believe that personalized care
still matters today, just as it did while Dr. Patrowicz was pursuing his career in medicine two decades ago. During a three-month rotation with his mentor, Dr. Phillip Hollander, he observed the longtime physician’s genuine care and profound respect for his patients — experiences that changed the course of Dr. Patrowicz’s career in family medicine. “I will never forget those moments. There’s no higher honor than for a patient to thank you for the work you do with them for their healthcare,” Dr. Patrowicz said. “When people are in need, it’s a wonderful thing that they ask you for help.” When patients call Dr. Patrowicz’s office, they immediately speak to a team member and can schedule a same-day appointment. During appointments, every patient receives the attention they deserve — no matter how long it takes — as Dr. Patrowicz doesn’t overextend himself in terms of the
number of patients he serves. “There’s no better way to help someone solve their problems than to sit down and talk with them about it,” Dr. Patrowicz said. “Healthcare is very personal to people. They want a great doctor-patient relationship, and our goal is to provide that for them.” Dr. Patrowicz sees entire families, from greatgrandparents to great-grandchildren and everyone in-between. He attributes the practice’s diverse and loyal patient roster to the satisfaction he and his team receive by providing quality, honest care. “We’ve accomplished this by working with experienced team members and taking the time to establish strong and individualized relationships with our patients. One’s health is personal and the doctorpatient relationship needs to reflect that. The best time to choose a doctor is when you don’t need a doctor in order to begin establishing this partnership.”

MID-ATLANTIC SURGICAL GROUP: IMPROVING OUTCOMES THROUGH STATE-OF-THE-ART EFFICIENCY Hossain Said-Mahmoudian, MD, RPVI; Douglas B. Wilhite, MD, RVT, FACS; and David Kerrigan, MD, FACS
Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group is proud to celebrate the success of its vascular care center, which opened in March 2018 in Salisbury. Having patients experience a more efficient coordination of care is precisely what Dr. Douglas Wilhite and his colleagues hoped to accomplish when they envisioned opening their state-of-the-art facility. With over 30 years’ experience, the Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group team had a collaborative vision to streamline their patients’ road to greater vascular health. This is critically important, because when you’re dealing with potentially life-altering vascular disease, every minute saved can save a life. “In opening our vascular care center, we’ve brought most of what we do under one roof, offering a one-stop shop for our patients,” said Dr. Wilhite, one of seven highly skilled specialists at Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group, including fellow board-certified vascular surgeons Dr. David Kerrigan and
Dr. Hossain Said-Mahmoudian. In years past, Eastern Shore residents often had to wait to see one doctor for an evaluation before being referred to a specialist at another location, who in turn scheduled the patient’s procedure at a third location. All of these time-consuming steps extended the patient’s wait time for treatment. On average, Dr. Wilhite said, “the time between evaluation and intervention could reach eight weeks or longer. Care ends up being slow, distributed and uncoordinated.” Now, the vascular care team at Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group “are able to get a patient through the same care pathway in five to seven days,” Dr. Wilhite said, “because evaluations, diagnostic testing and planned intervention are all handled in our stateof-the-art facility. It’s made a huge impact on our patients. Some face losing their ability to walk, losing a leg and other serious conditions. What we now offer
allows them to get better faster. Many physicians in the vascular field are moving to this model because it’s efficient. Medicare wants this from all physicians, too, because it reduces waste in both time and money, which can be attained in centers like ours.” The response from Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group patients has been overwhelmingly positive and Dr. Wilhite and his team are excited to continue their mission to help more Eastern Shore residents receive quality vascular care. As Mid-Atlantic Surgical Group continues to grow, their primary focus will continue to be providing all of their patients efficient and effective healthcare. “We’ve been providing this type of vascular care for more than 30 years. Now, we’re able to care for more patients a little bit more expeditiously. Waiting times are down and office availability is up. This is exactly the type of treatment our patients appreciate and deserve.”

World-Class CANCER CARE With cutting-edge technology, advanced clinical research and a unified team approach, PRMC ’s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute is a leader in the field
A
cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but one thing is certain: You do not need to travel far from home for world-class care. With treatment offered in Salisbury and Ocean Pines — and a surgical team in Salisbury to provide care as needed — Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute offers the most advanced care on the Shore. The Institute boasts an expanded research department that gives patients access to the latest clinical trials; a surgical robot that improves precision and reduces pain; cutting-edge radiation equipment that preserves healthy tissue and reduces treatment times; and a unified healthcare team that creates individualized care plans and embraces the latest treatment methods.
Each patient enrolled in a clinical trial has a coordinator/nurse who facilitates their care, helps them understand the clinical trial process and follows up with them throughout the experience. Clinical trials are strictly regulated by the federal government to ensure they meet the highest scientific and ethical standards. “On average, patients in clinical trials have better outcomes than those who receive community standard therapy,” said David Cowall, MD, Director of the Richard A. Henson Research Institute. So, how do you know if a clinical trial is right for you? Talking it over with your physician is a good first step — PRMC’s clinical research team works hand-inhand with many doctors’ offices to help get their patients into appropriate trials.
CLINICAL RESEARCH
CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
For the past 18 years, PRMC has been building a robust research department and forging relationships with the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network and national cooperative groups for participation in clinical trials. “We’re giving patients on the Eastern Shore access to innovative treatments that otherwise would have required them to leave the Shore,” said Joan Mischtschuk, Executive Director of the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute.
The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute has achieved another first on the Eastern Shore with the addition of the PerfectPitch Six Degrees of Freedom Couch. The new equipment, which aids in radiation treatment, has been installed at the Institute’s Ocean Pines location, and the clinical team couldn’t be more excited. The biggest benefit? It will improve patient positioning accuracy, therefore preserving healthy tissue and reducing treatment times. CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 79
“This is technology often only seen at academic medical centers,” said Dr. John Mansueti, Director of Radiation Oncology. “We are so proud to have it here.” According to Dr. Mansueti, the couch allows the healthcare team to correct positioning errors in pitch and roll. “We’re working with a human body, so it never sets up perfectly each time,” he said. “To make sure we hit the cancer, we have to treat a fair amount of healthy tissue with a typical positioning couch system. The new system will allow us to set patients up more accurately, thus allowing us to decrease our safety margin of normal tissue, which will spare more normal tissue to radiation exposure.” Precision accuracy with the new equipment is less than or equal to half of a millimeter and enables physicians to perform Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). SRS is a very precise and accurate high-dose treatment for brain lesions. SRS requires one treatment and is less likely to cause common side effects like short-term memory loss, which is typically permanent. Many patients who are diagnosed with advanced cancers such as lung and breast cancer are often at risk for brain metastasis, which occurs when the cancer travels by the blood stream to the brain, where it is able to grow and escape the patient’s immune system. Thanks to the PerfectPitch Six Degrees of Freedom Couch, SRS is performed at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute Ocean Pines location, which brings cutting-edge technology to the community.

“Almost every week, we are treating a patient with cancer that has either originated in the brain or spread to the brain.” Dr. Mansueti said. “Of those patients, a large percentage qualify for this more accurate treatment.” For those who need surgery, PRMC uses the da Vinci Xi® Surgical System. The da Vinci Xi, the third robot to be purchased by PRMC in the past decade, creates smaller incisions, which translates to faster recoveries and shorter hospital stays.
THE LATEST TREATMENT METHODS
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if your body’s own natural defenses could fight cancer? Well, that’s exactly what happens when immunotherapy is administered. This new treatment method allows the immune system to recognize and battle the disease. According to Medical Oncologist Feras Abdul-Khalek, MD, immunotherapy has shown positive
LUNCH IS SERVED Patients at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute have the most experienced and skilled healthcare team on the Shore, and thanks to a new lunch delivery service, some would say the most thoughtful, too. In September, the Institute made arrangements with the Junior Board Pines Café to have lunch delivered to oncology patients who receive treatment between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. If a patient’s loved one is present, they are encouraged to order, as well. There is no charge for lunch.
results against many types of cancer, including melanoma, lung cancer, head and neck cancers, kidney and bladder cancers and lymphomas. “The nice thing about it is that it doesn’t have the side effects that standard chemotherapy has, such as nausea, vomiting and extreme fatigue,” he said. “Overall, it’s very well tolerated.” With immunotherapy, drugs are administered via IV over the course of either two or three weeks, depending on the medication. Eligibility is determined by a combination of molecular tests on the patient’s cancer specimen and clinical factors, such as if the patient has previously undergone treatment. The success is variable depending on the type of cancer the patient has, Dr. Abdul-Khalek said, but overall it can cause a 10 to 20 percent durable response in metastatic Stage IV cancer. For more on the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, call 410-543-7006 or 1-866-9-CANCER or visit peninsula.org/cancer.
“The benefit is twofold: The patient does not need to worry about planning for a meal, and there is interaction with someone who is not there to treat but rather to serve,” said Alice Bailey, Director of Volunteer Services for the Junior Board Auxiliary Board. “Junior Board volunteers enjoy their interaction with patients, and go out of their way to add their own specific touch, such as a smiley-face sticker added to the serving box.” The Junior Board Pines Café is located next to the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute Ocean Pines at 11101 Cathage Road in Berlin. The café is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Skin Cancer: Could this common disease be in your future?
D
id you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States? One in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so the timing was perfect to ask Dr. Sara Moghaddam of Delmarva Skin Specialists questions regarding skin cancer and for her tips to improve overall skin health.
are the most common forms of skin cancer, and how Q What do they occur? Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common forms of skin cancer and grow from within the top layers of the skin. These cancers are caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun and can develop from a combined lifetime of unprotected sun exposure or even a sudden, rapid amount of sun exposure. (Hint, hint... like that Caribbean vacation you went on recently and came back with the worst sunburn ever! Ouch!) Basal and squamous cell carcinoma usually grow slowly over time, however there is a small subset of these cancers that can develop and progress quickly. They rarely spread to other parts of the body but can become very large and disfiguring if left neglected or undetected for a prolonged period of time.
82 COASTAL STYLE / May-June 2019
is familiar with melanoma, but just how serious Q Everyone can this form of skin cancer be? It’s extremely serious. One person dies every hour from melanoma. Again, the most common risk factor includes ultraviolet exposure, whether from the sun or artificial sources, such as tanning beds. A small percentage of melanomas can develop from pre-existing moles; however, most are a completely new spot on the skin. The most common locations for this type of cancer include the back and legs, but it can occur anywhere, including the eyes, mouth, nails and even genital skin.
are the steps in determining a skin cancer diagnosis? Q What The first step in early diagnosis and detection is seeing your dermatologist for a baseline skin exam. This is a noninvasive, simple screening and takes only a few minutes. I see patients every day who are concerned about a certain spot on their skin, which, after examination, I determine to be benign. However, in a large number of cases during the exam, I’ll find a suspicious lesion somewhere else that the patient had no idea about.
often should someone have their skin checked? Q How Skin cancer is not always obvious. A baseline skin exam is critical, and your dermatologist will tell you how often you’ll
need a skin check. For example, a patient with a newly diagnosed skin cancer is 40% more likely to develop another skin cancer in the next few years. In these instances, I’ll see the patient every six months until they’ve “graduated,” and then I decrease their office visit frequency.
Q
At what age should one begin receiving regular skin check-ups? Melanoma is one of the top cancers in young adults under the age of 30, which is why no one is too young to get their skin checked.
Committed to protecting those you love.
if one needs a biopsy for a suspicious Q What skin lesion on their skin? What happens next?
Don’t sweat it. This is a simple and quick process. It is done in the convenience of your dermatologist’s office, immediately following the skin check. No stitches are required, and you will receive diagnostic results within 1-2 weeks. If you are diagnosed with a skin cancer, your dermatologist will review your standard treatment options.
Skin cancer is preventable. Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, sun-protective clothing and seeking shade are all means to avoid dangerous ultraviolet rays that lead to skin cancer.
are some precautions people can take Q What to protect themselves from the sun?
Skin cancer is preventable. Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, sun-protective clothing and seeking shade are all means to avoid dangerous ultraviolet rays that lead to skin cancer. As an aside, sun exposure is also a large contributor to aging and wrinkles of skin. Regardless of your willingness or ability to protect yourself, it still pays off to get your skin checked regularly. You will have peace of mind knowing that if something does pop up, your dermatologist can catch it early. I urge you to get your skin checked regularly — this could save your life! Macky & Pam Stansell
R
esidents at the new Macky & Pam Stansell House of Coastal Hospice enjoy their final months, weeks or days in a uniquely peaceful and dignified way, experiencing beautiful surroundings and attended to by an experienced staff. The Lower Shore’s first residential hospice features three floors of comprehensive support, blended with a sense of ease that comes from feeling as if you were living at home. Set on 11 acres of picturesque waterfront property on the Isle of Wight Bay, Stansell House, as it is called in conversation, has been a decade in the making. Alane Capen, president of Coastal Hospice, shared that along the way, the need for such a facility grew exponentially, driven by the growing population of retirees across the Lower Shore.

LOCATED AT THE SOUTHERN POINT OF OCEAN PINES, THE MACKY & PAM STANSELL HOUSE OFFERS A NUMBER OF AMENITIES, INCLUDING 12 INDIVIDUAL, PRIVATE PATIENT ROOMS, A LABYRINTH MEDITATION GARDEN AND SCENIC VIEWS OF ISLE OF WIGHT BAY.
“Hospice was designed to be a home-based program, largely to serve people in their own houses, which assumes a level of at-home support,” said Capen. “But there are often situations in which the first spouse has passed away, or the family lives far away, or the care needs are too great to stay in the home. Stansell House allows those patients a safe, comfortable alternative.” Residents can enjoy many luxuries on the main level, where a dozen bedroom suites are flanked by a family room, kitchen, spa and other amenities. There is an outside deck with inviting rockers that overlooks a beautiful garden. On the lower level, versatile office space allows staff members, nurses and volunteers to hold meetings, trainings and support groups. The upper level has two exam rooms and a physician’s office for palliative care for patients who are facing a serious illness but not receiving hospice care. A major differentiator between traditional assisted-living residences and nursing homes is that Stansell

House provides around-the-clock service from a fully trained hospice staff, especially comforting to patients who have no family close by and spend
much of their time alone. The outdoor setting offers its own distinction, where acres of marshland serves as home to wildlife and leads to a beautiful view of the bay and the twinkling lights of Ocean City. The house is named for lead donors Macky and Pam Stansell, owners of the popular Macky’s Bayside Bar & Grill. For Macky in particular, the house has been a passion, which he often relates in a story about how he and his wife went from using services to becoming donors. Macky later served as a Coastal Hospice board member and the couple was voted as the project’s namesake in recognition of their dedication. “About 12 years ago, Pam’s mother was dying of cancer, and Pam and her sister were discussing moving her mother into our home; I was so against it,” he recalled. “I didn’t know what it would mean to our lives or how we would do it, but it turned into the most humbling learning experience. She was with us in comfort for six weeks, and hospice was amazing.” Continued on Page 114
Planning for the future can bring about overwhelming feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and the desire to avoid the topic all together. Working with the right team of professionals, engaging in productive communication, and taking the process one step at a time can help ensure a positive and goal-oriented outcome while making these necessary arrangements. The sooner a family takes action, the more legal planning opportunities they may have available to succeed in meeting their goals.

WE ARE FAMILY: PATIENTS OF DELMARVA DENTAL SERVICES CHOOSE THE PRACTICE FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, INCLUDING ITS CARING AND DEDICATED STAFF. EACH OF THE TEAM MEMBERS PICTURED ABOVE HAS WORKED AT DDS FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS.

avid Hudson had a lifelong fear of dentists that began with unsettling experiences as a child. Even after a freak nail-gun accident a year ago broke his two front teeth, Hudson vowed not to see a dentist. But there he was, at Delmarva Dental Services in Salisbury last January, facing the start of extensive work that the contractor from Wallops Island, VA, hoped would correct a lifetime of neglect. “I couldn’t be any happier,” said Hudson, who’s on his way to the great smile he had given up on many years ago. The compassionate team at Delmarva Dental Services put him at ease from the start, even when it came to my fear of receiving anesthesia.” “Through our thought process and

the education and tools that we have here, and the labs that we use, we are able to make the dentistry part easy,” said Dr. Leigh Auchey, who has handled Hudson’s ongoing dental work. To be able to have patients who can say ‘I’m not afraid anymore,’ or ‘You can’t imagine what this has done for me,’ I think is the best part for me. I really think it’s about being able to talk to the patient.” Experience is one of the hallmarks of the 35-year-old practice. Delmarva Dental’s providers, who include Dr. Joseph P. Harmon, Dr. Janet O. Cypher, Dr. Irene Sakellis and Dr. Auchey, have a combined 33 years of college and post-graduate education, in addition to nearly 350 hours of combined continuing education each year. They strive to remain up-to-date on all the latest techniques to provide the best service to their patients. This commitment helps patients maintain optimum dental health and provides them the smile of their dreams. Kathy Martin has traveled from Lewes since last July for appointments after marveling at a friend’s beautiful smile. Dr. Harmon, one of many staff members with at least two decades at Delmarva Dental Services, restored her smile with da Vinci veneers over her existing teeth. “They delivered exactly what they said they were going to deliver,” Martin said. “I have not regretted one bit of that.
DAVID HUDSON WALLOPS ISLAND
I would highly recommend [Delmarva Dental Services to] anybody who wants to enhance their smile and be confident about it. It was a totally rewarding experience.” The Delmarva Dental Services staff strives to make a trip to the dentist feel like home, compassionately guiding patients through each step of the smile revitalization process. They build relationships with patients and come to know about their families and daily lives. Most of all, the staff understands what worries patients. For Hudson, it was the fear that manifested over many years. For others, it’s concerns over work being done or the cost of that work. “We are a growing practice and a large practice, but

that doesn’t take away anything from the personal touch that we like to provide to our patients,” Dr. Auchey said. “We are truly focused on the patient, their concerns and needs.” Delmarva Dental Services provides treatments ranging from cleanings, composite fillings and crowns to root canals, extractions, dentures, Botox and Invisalign, featuring digital technology. They also offer convenient morning, afternoon and evening appointments six days a week, because their patients’ busy lives require flexible schedules. “It’s about being available for our patients when they need us,” longtime office manager Becky Hopkins said. There is no confusion. There is no uncertainty. There are only satisfied customers who become lifelong clients, with their winning smiles serving as word-of-mouth recommendations. Hudson has brought his wife, daughter and other family and friends to Delmarva Dental Services. Hudson, who gladly drives an hour for dental appointments at Delmarva Dental, said, “It is a long way to go to a dentist, but it’s well worth it. I couldn’t be any happier with them.”

Gone are the nondescript yellow walls and green floor, and a well-worn sign that seemingly faded away behind years of corrosion. The entrance came alive with a fresh coat of paint, new flooring and photos showcasing Worcester High School students who, in the aftermath

of segregation, continue to be a beacon of pride for Worcester County Public Schools, which celebrates 150 years of quality education this year. It was a collaborative effort, from within the building and throughout the county, because the school district’s tradition is built on people from many backgrounds coming together as one. #WeAreWorcester, as the hashtag emblazoned above the double doors leading into the heart of the building

signifies, is more than a motto. It’s a way of life for teachers, school officials, students and families past and present who have played key roles in bringing one of Maryland’s most productive school districts year after year to such a momentous anniversary in its history. The dramatic changes to the Board of Education building’s foyer was merely a small part of the transformation taking place during the 2018-19 academic year. The maintenance staff painted walls and restored the building’s dedication plaque, while Lowe’s of Pocomoke City donated new flooring. A Pocomoke High School student designed a large ‘W’ sign that hangs inside, and students from Worcester Technical High School next door designed the layout of the foyer, as well as a time capsule featuring items from all 12 elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools in Ocean City, Berlin, Snow Hill and Pocomoke in the district that will remain sealed in the corner of the lobby for the next 50 years.

STRENGTH THROUGH UNITY: ACCORDING TO WORCESTER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT DR. ANNETTE WALLACE, THE WORCESTER COMMUNITY IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER. "WE HAVE THREE DISTINCT COMMUNITIES THAT ARE SO DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER. I THINK THAT DIVERSITY IS PART OF WHAT MAKES US SO SPECIAL. THE DIFFERENCES BRING US TOGETHER TO MAKE US STRONGER AND BETTER.”
94 COASTAL STYLE / May-June 2019
“The community of Worcester County is a very different place than anywhere else. We have three distinct communities that are so different from one another,” said Dr. Annette Wallace, the school district’s assistant superintendent and chief operating officer. “I think that diversity is part of what makes us so special. The differences bring us together and make us stronger and better.” Long before the year-long academic celebration began in the fall, serious reflection took place among Superintendent of Schools Lou Taylor and his staff. An occasion of this magnitude needs a message that resonates for the next 150 years. That was especially important to Taylor, a 1978 Stephen Decatur High School graduate who has served as a teacher, principal and now superintendent in the school district for 36 years. “I believe our school system is the cornerstone of this community,” Taylor said, and they couldn’t look ahead without honoring where it all began. Headlining the anniversary celebration in February was a dedication Wallace called “one of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen. That will be a moment of my career that I will never forget.” Worcester High School alumni and teachers, roughly 50 in all, representing 17 years as the county’s lone high school for African American students (1953-70) joined hands in the foyer and sang the school’s alma mater, “We Stand on Guard for Thee.” The school year began with the annual Opening Kickoff event at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City. The spirit of the school district’s 150th anniversary came to life, both within the hundreds of people in attendance and the theme Taylor coined, “Making It Magical.” “We wanted to do some special things to recognize the outstanding educational system that we believe we have,” Taylor said. District officials also looked to the past while planning the 32nd annual Teacher of the Year banquet. On March 29, educators spanning 150 years were honored alongside the four finalists for the prestigious award, which a week later was presented to Gina Russell, a special education teacher at Snow Hill Elementary School.

“We’re honoring everybody who plays a role in making sure we’ve had 150 years of excellence in education,” said Carrie Sterrs, the school district’s coordinator of public relations and special programs. District officials unveiled a 150th anniversary logo, created by a team of school-system alumni who have gone on to start their own local marketing business. A new logo will take its place July 1, the opening day of the 2019-20 academic year. The new logo will be chosen from submissions to a community-wide contest. “While we have three distinct communities, they can all come together under that Worcester County Public Schools

banner,” Sterrs said. “An anniversary like this is just another way for everybody to come together.” It took the entire Worcester County community to put together a yearlong celebration like this. Which is appropriate, Wallace pointed out, because it took the entire community to build 150 years of tradition in Worcester County Public Schools. “That’s what makes our school system special,” Wallace said. “Every single person is a piece of thread that is joined together to make the beautiful fabric of our school system. If you take one out, it’s just not the same.”

here is a bright light at the end of the tunnel for The Residences at Lighthouse Cove in Dewey Beach. The final phase of a decade-long, mixed-use legacy project, which has generated nearly $6 million in tax revenue on the municipal, county and state levels and created hundreds of jobs, was unveiled to the public recently. Meanwhile, work continues on the final 29 of 83 one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom condominiums and the Lighthouse Cove Event Center, a 18,500-square-foot facility that will host an array of special events. CoastalStyleMag.com / COASTAL STYLE 99
“The condominiums will offer sensational and unparalleled views of the Rehoboth Bay,” said Thomas J. Hanna, president of Harvey, Hanna & Associates, a full-service commercialreal-estate development company based in Newport, DE. The event center will feature a firstclass ballroom and other facilities for weddings, conferences, special events and corporate retreats, as well as a new and modernized Lighthouse Restaurant, a new baywalk and an expanded bayside beach. “It’s the only one of its kind in Delaware that will allow for private wedding ceremonies and other special occasions,” Hanna added. The Lighthouse Cove Event Center is set to begin hosting events in the fall. The restaurant is due to reopen in March 2020, while public amenities, such as the baywalk, pier and sunset gazebo, will be completed this year. “We are proud to be completing the final phase of our mixed-use legacy project at Lighthouse Cove,” Hanna said, as much for the soon-to-be finished product as the positive economic impact already being felt in and around Dewey Beach. Hanna called the project “a dynamic destination that represents a benefit for the town of Dewey Beach, our condominium owners, visitors to the area and every other member of the community. We have designed and built a world-class residential product that has created a new standard for luxury in Dewey Beach and helped raise values for economic development projects across the area. Further, the Lighthouse Cove Event Center will help Dewey Beach continue to expand its prime visiting seasons and help fuel yearround economic activity.” Harvey, Hanna & Associates, Inc., has worked hand in hand with Dewey Beach officials to bring what Hanna called a “vibrant, mixed-use commercial destination” to this popular Eastern Shore town. By working closely with the town and following the goals of its comprehensive plan for development,” Hanna said, “the Lighthouse Cove resort is helping to transition Dewey Beach into a 21st-century destination.”

AT BOXCAR40, CHEFOWNER PAUL SUPLEE HAS HIT ALL THE RIGHT NOTES WITH HIS MENU, WHICH FEATURES TRADITIONAL AMERICAN FARE WITH A FUN SOUTHERN SPIN.
NOT-SOHIDDEN GEM Boxcar40 might be tucked away in a onetime firehouse in Pittsville, but that’s not stopping customers from showing up in droves WRITTEN BY VICTOR FERNANDES PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRANT L. GURSKY

oxcar40 opened less than a year ago, slightly off the more traditional paths to Eastern Shore culinary hotspots of Maryland and Delaware. Yet the 90-yearold Pittsville firehouse-turned-popularrestaurant-and-bar is far from a hidden gem. Diners have found its rustic, old-school feel charming, and longtime chef Paul Suplee’s homemade American meals with a Southern spin have earned rave reviews. Suplee said he wondered if Boxcar40’s out-of-the-way location would work before being shown the unique property

on Gumboro Road two years ago. Instead, the building’s exposed-brick walls, weathered hardwood, chipped paint and short garage doors — which once paved the way for firefighters from Pittsville’s Station 7 in horse-drawn wagons — provided immediate inspiration. “I don’t know if I would have ever come here myself,” Suplee said. “But when you walk in, you can see right away it’s a gorgeous building. It’s a little bit industrial and fun. We found a good situation.” With help from family and close friend Ashley Abell, owner of Attics of My Life in Selbyville, three months of what Suplee called “sweat equity” led to opening night on Sept. 12, 2018, the same night Hurricane Florence was expected to bear down on the Eastern Shore. “We don’t know if it’s going to be a hurricane party or an opening party,
but just come,” Suplee wrote on social media, in hopes of a blend of humor and honesty would attract locals to his restaurant. “You might not get exactly what you ordered, but you’re going to have a great meal.” “We had a great opening night and a very successful couple of weeks,” he said. “Within two weeks, we even booked our first wedding.

A PARTICULAR CROWD-PLEASER ON BOXCAR40'S MENU ARE THE CHEESY GRITS (SHOWN ABOVE), WHICH SEVERAL CUSTOMERS FROM THE SOUTH HAVE SAID ARE THE BEST THEY'VE HAD ANYWHERE.
It was just off the charts how busy we were from the get-go. Customers love our service. They love the food.” Boxcar40’s menu exceeds expectations. Even the staunchest kale haters have converted after tasting his fresh garlic kale. “Everyone who has the grits says they love it,” Suplee said of his cheesy grits, a traditional Southern delicacy. “We’ve had quite a few people from Florida and the Carolinas dine with us, and a lot of them say they’re the best they’ve ever had.” There’s a delicious meal for every budget, including a $10 burger made from a brisket, chuck and short-rib blend that Suplee said is very popular. Another hit is Paul’s brisket and pulled pork; cooked for 13 hours in a 300-lb Southern Pride smoker flavored with hickory logs. Pork jus from those ribs are a key ingredient in his barbecue sauce. One dollar from sales of the PVFD pork

sandwich is donated to the Pittsville Volunteer Fire Department, located across the street. “We’re a destination restaurant for unpretentious Southern cuisine,” Suplee said. “We have a growing wine list, outdoor summer seating, specialty-smoked goods, two full bars and regular entertainment. There’s
definitely something for everyone here, and based upon our initial success, we’re looking forward to being tucked away in Pittsville for many years to come.”

here’s something about sushi that people go crazy for. Maybe it’s the freshness of the fare or its healthiness, or perhaps it’s the art and sophistication that goes into its creation. Regardless of the reasons, the sushi craze is here to stay. Fortunately for us here on the Shore, there are ample sushi establishments around, each bringing its own uniqueness to the roll! WORCESTER COUNTY ■ OC Wasabi – Ocean City The first of its kind in Ocean City, OC Wasabi has been a local favorite for nearly 22 years. The emphasis here is always on the consistency of the sushi and ingredients, and customers can always expect the same high-quality sushi and friendly staff each time they return. MOST UNIQUE ROLL: Create Your Own — bring a list of ingredients to the experienced sushi chefs. If they can make it into a sushi roll, they will! ■ OC Wasabi Express – Ocean City OC Wasabi Express is the place to go when you’re looking for sushi on-the-go. They offer a condensed version of the OC Wasabi full-restaurant menu, and their options certainly trump any takeaway sushi you’d find at a grocery store.

■ OC Sushi Café – Ocean City OC Sushi Café is relatively new to the sushi scene, but that hasn’t stopped it from already earning a slew of five-star reviews. Its intimate and cozy setting allows for an up-close view of sushi as its being expertly created. Approximately 25% of people in Maryland are obese. Obesity is known to increase the risk of multiple medical conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, heart disease, strokes, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, depression, hyperlipidemia and even some forms of cancer. Many people have attempted the various diet fads with minimal, if any, success. Studies have shown weight loss (bariatric) surgery to be superior to diet and exercise alone in terms of weight reduction and reducing or curing weightrelated co-morbidities. Our surgeons perform all 3 of these popular bariatric surgery procedures.
