Lewes, DE There are so many rewards that come from living or vacationing along the shores of the Delmarva Peninsula. On most people’s top five lists are our stunning sunrises and sunsets. The reds, oranges, golds, pinks and purples that the sky becomes at those times of day can literally stop a person in their tracks. In the case of these two kayak fishers, they appear to be stopped midpaddle as they made their way back to shore to admire the incredible sunset. Photo and Description by Pamela Aquilani

Delaware Bay A confession from a sunrise-loving photographer: We have so many beautiful sunrises at the beach, and I often like to add an element or two in the foreground to provide additional interest to the photograph. It often adds a sense of scale, as well. My fiancé often shoots with me, as was the case this particular morning. While he shot the sunrise, he also became part of my composition, which I found to be a very nice addition. Photo and Description by Pamela Aquilani

cean View, DE, is home to a unique fine-art gallery owned and staffed by a dedicated group of artists. Gallery One represents a mix of traditional and contemporary art, and each month brings the unexpected. Jeanne Mueller, a painter and one of the gallery’s owners, is quick to trace her path to not only finding her métier but also how the gallery was founded and is now creatively operated. Originally from Northern Baltimore County, Mueller admittedly only “dabbled” in the arts and did not consider pursuing visual creativity as a career. Her interest in painting would wait until her retirement from a career in the telecommunications industry and the subsequent move she and her husband made to Ocean View. When a friend asked her to come to a painting session with members of the now defunct Bethany Beach Watercolor Society, she wanted to but confessed she had no supplies. “I’ll give you paint and paper,” her neighbor replied. Mueller went and later joined the group. In 2006, some of the artists in the group decided to start a gallery to display work year-round. It was an exciting proposition. They rented a small space that had just enough room to show paintings. That was 15 years ago.

TOGETHER AGAIN After many months apart due to COVID-19 restrictions, artists and art lovers have reunited at Gallery One in Ocean View for exhibitions on Friday evenings.

The gallery, gaining fans among both locals and tourists, needed room to grow. In 2009, Gallery One moved to its current, much larger location space. Now, along with paintings, the gallery houses the works of potters, weavers, glassblowers, woodworkers, mosaic artists and jewelry makers. “It’s amazing how many different styles of art there are in the gallery,” Mueller says with a lilt of appreciation. Gallery One is not a co-op but rather owned and operated by 14 artists, including five from the founding group, who all commit to staffing the gallery and other operational commitments. Relying on the cooperation, creativity and flexibility of all the artists, Gallery One’s business model has worked well, since, as Mueller said, “everyone has a desire to succeed.” The gallery is open year-round, and the artwork is rehung each month to keep the display of art dynamic. One unique characteristic of the gallery is called the “theme wall.” Each artist/owner creates a new painting based on preselected monthly themes — a color, location, concept or an object. This creative way to keep the art fresh has earned many admirers. Some patrons make monthly visits to the gallery to relax and enjoy the new work. Open seven days a week, Gallery One is located at 32 Atlantic Ave. (Rte. 26) in Ocean View. Visit their website, GalleryOneDE.com, for more information. cs

The Lost Art of Letters KATY ACKERMAN OF LEWES LETTERING CO. CREATES CUSTOM CALLIGRAPHY INVITATIONS PERFECT FOR THE RETURN OF THE WEDDING — AND SO MUCH MORE Story by Meredith Lindemon | Portraits by Meg Shupe

K

aty Ackerman has an almost palpable happiness. It’s the easy effusiveness natural to talented people who love what they do, which diffuses organically into the lives of everyone they meet. Becoming a calligrapher was a similarly organic experience for Ackerman, who owns Lewes Lettering Co. She opened her whiteclapboard storefront in 2020 to house her design studio and stationery store on Front Street in the heart of downtown Lewes. For Ackerman, this new space is the crowning achievement of five years of dedicated work perfecting her craft and building a loyal following.

28

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

“I started doing calligraphy in 2015, when I got engaged,” said Katy. “I was playing around with it because I wanted to use it for my own wedding. I started an Instagram, and in a few weeks, people began asking me to do calligraphy for them. By the time my wedding came around, I had so much practice that I was doing my own envelopes in the middle of the night.” Like many in the creative field, she got her start working for someone else. In her case, it was a stationer who needed someone to address envelopes, using the traditional

lettering style. She did calligraphy part-time while she worked at Dogfish Head Brewery, until 2017, when she was able to go full-time with her own business. She opened her shop last year. For anyone who loves paper, her Lewes Lettering Co. is an expertly edited treasure trove of design-forward journals and planners, trendy greeting cards and hard-to-find writing tools. For those interested in learning calligraphy, Ackerman offers two different workshops, which have earned rave reviews. Her custom invitations encompass a wide range of price points while still adhering to her signature style. “I want my calligraphy to be the main focus, so I have a very clean look. I print in two methods, one being letterpress. I also offer raised-ink printing, which is beautiful but doesn’t break the budget as much,” says Ackerman. After a year of being stifled, Katy predicts that texture in designs, velvet and handmade paper will be the prevailing trends. “An invitation is so much more than a piece of mail,” she said. “It’s a personal investment in a sacred event.” cs

Making a Splash! THE WORLD’S FIRST MUSEUM DEDICATED TO MERMAIDS OPENS IN DOWNTOWN BERLIN Story by Alison Pappas | Photography by Grant L. Gursky When Delmarva native and accomplished photographer Alyssa Maloof originally purchased a second-floor space in a historic building overlooking charming downtown Berlin, she envisioned that it would serve as a photography studio. Realizing the empty space had the potential to appeal to a large audience, the idea suddenly came to her to instead transform it into a museum devoted to showcasing the legend of the mermaid. You might ask: “Why mermaids?” Because, said Alyssa, “Everyone loves mermaids!” Officially open as of March 2021, the Berlin Mermaid Museum has certainly made a splash as the world’s first museum dedicated solely to mermaids. Its intriguing interior features high ceilings and embodies an eye-catching Victorianesque design.

SWIMMING WITH CURIOSITY Alyssa Maloof originally intended her space in Berlin to be a photography studio, but COVID’s lengthy restrictions enabled her to repurpose the premises as a one-of-a-kind tribute to the legend of the mermaid. Alyssa Maloof

30

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

The downtime resulting from the COVID-19 quarantine period presented Alyssa with an opportunity to really “dive” into researching the mythical creature’s culture and long history prior to opening the museum. She curated the myriad of artifacts and artistic elements completely online. As you walk through the museum, there are opportunities to “hear, see and touch” these mystical creatures. The multidimensional exhibits now on display include a wide array of mermaid depictions, from classical representations to more ancient portrayals. Some of the main focal points are a sizeable metal sculpture and walls coated with plaques that recount mermaid sightings throughout history. “There’s something here for guests of all ages to enjoy, from flat informational sheets about mermaids’ extensive history to dress boxes with mermaidthemed photo props for the kids,” shared Alyssa. In addition to a guest book available for all visitors to share their mermaid admiration, there is also a gift shop where guests can purchase unique mermaid-themed items, such as jewelry, stuffed toys and memorabilia. Currently, the museum is open to visitors Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. cs

STAGE PRESENCE Marion Station’s Kayla Willing shares a moment with reigning Miss Maryland Taelyr Robinson after Willing was crowned Miss Crustacean for 2020.

Crowning Achievements:

Kayla Willing Story by Alison Pappas | Photo by Robert Holland

32

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

FOR RECENT HOLLY GROVE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL GRADUATE KAYLA WILLING, SUMMER IS ESPECIALLY EVENTFUL. SHE IS CURRENTLY FULFILLING HER COMMUNITY ROLE AS MISS CRUSTACEAN, A TITLE SHE WON AT HER FIRST PAGEANT APPEARANCE, WHILE PREPARING FOR THE MISS MARYLAND COMPETITION

I

never really considered myself a traditional pageant girl, but I had a friend talk me into applying to compete for Miss Crustacean. Once I had filled out all the paperwork and was officially signed up, I was all in and worked very hard,” shared Kayla. While there are swimsuit and evening-gown portions of the pageant, the most heavily weighted segment is the interview. Because Kayla is quite articulate, especially for her age, and she has a natural ease onstage from her background in theatre club and debate club, it was no surprise that she excelled throughout the interview. “The judges asked questions regarding my résumé, particularly about my interest in clinical counseling. I used this platform to speak about my passions and talk about ethical dilemmas within the justice system,” said Kayla. After capturing the title of Miss Crustacean, Kayla set her sights on a new title: Miss Maryland 2021. “After receiving the crown, I found out that this was the first year the Miss Crustacean pageant would be considered a preliminary for the Miss Maryland pageant. I immediately had to switch gears and begin preparing for this next challenge,” shared Kayla. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Miss Maryland pageant is operating half virtually, via Zoom, and half in person, in Hagerstown. Kayla had to adapt to the virtual portion’s unique challenges, so she has enlisted the help of a technicalsupport team made up of friends and family, to ensure the lighting, audio and staging go smoothly. Kayla has also started taking voice and dance lessons, as well as adhering to a gym schedule to prepare for the competition. She has selected musical theater as her talent, and in just four days learned a new routine specifically for the pageant. If Kayla is crowned Miss Maryland, she will go on to compete in the Miss America pageant. Kayla will be attending Lancaster Bible College this fall. She was recruited to join the college’s field hockey team; she was also accepted into the clinical counseling program. cs

and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photos and information; and historical objects, like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia and protest material. Our democracy demands action, reaction, vision and revision as we continue to question how to form “a more perfect union.” How do you participate as a citizen? From the revolution and suffrage to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this

ever-evolving story — the story of democracy in America. In conjunction with the Smithsonian exhibition, the Nabb Research Center will highlight artifacts, documents and stories from its collection that promote discussion and inspire visitors to think about the democratic process, activism and civic engagement within our local community. The companion exhibit will feature voter registration ledgers, campaign memorabilia and items from local political and civic groups.

Refreshingly Different AUTHOR CASIE VOGEL, LOVER OF ALL THINGS CARBONATED, SHARES HER EXPERTISE TO HELP YOU LIVE YOUR BEST SELTZER LIFE Photography courtesy Ulysses Press

“Nothing sounds sweeter than the crack of that slim aluminum can. Spring, summer, whatever time of year… it’s hard-seltzer season,” says Casie Vogel, author of the new release, The Hard Seltzer Cocktail Book. At 4-to-6% alcohol content, it’s an easy beverage to imbibe any time of day. “But sometimes, you have to take it up a notch… or several,” Casie said. “What’s the right ratio? What actually tastes like a cocktail, doesn’t skimp, but also doesn’t immediately send you to blackout town? That’s where my help comes in. The recipes are dangerously delicious and designed to get the party going, whether it’s a Friday-night pregame or your next big party — or if it’s just been a tough day (girl, you do you). Pick up this book, and let’s get bubbly!” The Hard Seltzer Cocktail Book offers everything you need to add a little snap, sparkle and pop to your favorite cocktails. The recipes are organized into four different chapters — Boozy Brunch, Summer Slushies, Classy Classics and Pregame & Party — based on the potential party or day-drinking situation you’ve found yourself in. With the exception of a few single-serving cocktails and the batch “party” cocktails, most of the recipes call for one 12-ounce can of hard seltzer and serve two people. Vogel is a lover of all things carbonated, whether it’s a spiked-seltzer happy hour or her daily Diet Coke. She has experience both hosting and attending many a boozy brunch that has transitioned into all-night affairs, thanks to well-mixed drinks.

Aperol Spritz-o-Clock Makes 2 drinks

The Hard Seltzer Cocktail Book: 55 Unofficial Recipes for White Claw® Slushies, Truly® Mixers, and More Spiked-Seltzer Drinks By Casie Vogel Ulysses Press Hardcover; June 2021 $19.95

This classic Italian apéritif isn’t just good before a meal — it’s always spritz-o-clock in my book. You can use soda water instead of the Prosecco, but it’s much more fun to triple down on the alcohol. Ingredients: 6 oz Aperol 4 oz Prosecco or soda water 1 can orange-flavored hard seltzer (12 oz) Orange wedges, for garnish Instructions: Fill two glasses with ice. Split the Aperol between the glasses (3 oz each). Split the Prosecco or soda water between the glasses (2 oz each). Top each glass with half a can of seltzer. Garnish each glass with an orange wedge.

Watermelon Sugar Slushy Makes 4-6 drinks

This watermelon slushy is dangerously refreshing — perfect for a hot day at the beach. Or for pretending that it’s a hot day at the beach. In Malibu. With Harry Styles. Too hot? Freeze the watermelon overnight; it’s best served as cold as possible. Ingredients: 4 cups seedless watermelon, chopped 1 cup vodka 2 oz lime juice 1-2 oz simple syrup, to taste 1 can watermelon- or lime-flavored hard seltzer (12 oz) 1 lime wedge to rim glasses (optional) Sugar, to rim glasses (optional) Lime wheels, for garnish

HAPPY HOUR MONDAY - FRIDAY 4-5PM

Instructions: Put the watermelon in a large, sealable plastic bag. Place in the freezer for a minimum of 1 hour but ideally overnight. The next day, put the watermelon, vodka, lime juice, and simple syrup in a blender. Puree until the watermelon is completely liquefied. Add the seltzer and pulse a few times. You don’t want to blend out all the bubbles, but you want this well mixed. If desired, rub a lime wedge around the rims of two large glasses. Dip in sugar. Pour into prepared glasses and garnish with lime wedges.

Millennial Cosmo Makes 2 drinks

We’d have to believe that a Millennial Carrie Bradshaw couldn’t turn down the Claw — it’s now a staple at NYC bars and rooftop parties. I couldn’t help but wonder: What would the rest of the girls think of this seltzery variation? Ingredients: 2 oz vodka 2 oz cranberry juice 1 oz Cointreau or triple sec 1 can lime-flavored hard seltzer (12 oz) Lime wedges or peel for garnish (optional) Instructions: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, cranberry juice and Cointreau or triple sec to the shaker. Shake until chilled. Strain into two (ideally chilled) glasses. Top each glass with half a can of seltzer. Garnish with the lime wedges or peel. If you want to go with the classic martini-shaped glass, make sure you’ve got oversized ones on hand. This seltzer variation will not fit in your cute Gatsbyesque coupes.

Summer-in-the-City Manhattan Makes 2 drinks

They say the original Manhattan was made with rye, but obviously we had to make some changes. Orange hard seltzer and bourbon work great here for a nice, sippable whiskey cocktail. Ingredients: ¼ cup bourbon 1 oz sweet vermouth 2 dashes bitters (like Angostura) 1 can orange-flavored hard seltzer (12 oz) Maraschino cherries, for garnish Instructions: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Enjoy the beach and ocean safely TidalHealth offers summer safety tips Whether you’re vacationing at one of Delmarva’s beautiful beaches or a toes-inthe-sand local, there are certain precautions you can take to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable summer. “It’s always great to see everyone enjoy the beach and ocean safely and without incident,” said Capt. John Rykaczewski of the Fenwick Island Beach Patrol. All too often, lifeguards respond to medical emergencies that result from a lack of knowledge or experience on the beach. This summer, keep the following in mind: The sun The sun and heat can cause someone’s nice day at the beach to turn into a bad day fast. Avoid too much sun exposure, which means wearing proper sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Taking a break under an umbrella can also help avoid heat-related health issues. Sunburn can also be a problem, so applying a sunblock that is 30 SPF or higher several times a day can greatly reduce damage to your skin. This is especially important for young children. Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic fluids to stay hydrated. Ocean conditions change often There are many hazards to pay attention to when entering the ocean. Although waves may look small, they can be very powerful. People can and do get knocked down and have a great deal of trouble getting back up. Lifeguards often respond to surf-related injuries that occur at the very edge of the ocean. Always pay attention to the surf breaking close to shore,

Here are a few tips from TidalHealth’s Emergency/Trauma team to help you have a safe and fun summer: Always: • ●Avoid excessive alcohol • ●Buckle up and properly restrain infants and children • ●Wear life jackets while boating

and never dive into unknown water or shallow, breaking waves. Rip currents can be extremely dangerous Rip currents are channels of water that travel back out to deeper water, flowing away from shore. They can be strong and pull swimmers out to sea who are not aware of the signs and characteristics of a rip. A rip current can look like a channel of churning, choppy water; a different water color or a line of foam, seaweed or debris moving seaward. If caught in a rip, remember to not swim against the current. You may be able to escape it by swimming out of the current in a direction following the shoreline, then at an angle toward the beach. If you feel you will be unable to reach shore, do not panic; instead, quickly draw attention to yourself. If you need help, yell and wave. Check in Always check in with the lifeguard on duty to find out any hazards at the beach that day, and never swim without a lifeguard on duty. Keep your feet in the sand until a lifeguard is in the stand, and don’t swim alone.

• ●Wear protective safety equipment while biking, skateboarding and rollerblading • ●Use proper sunscreen • Wear shoes to avoid stepping on nails, glass, thorns and small biting critters • ●Use insect repellent and wear long clothing in the woods to protect against mosquito bites, tick bites and poison ivy • ●Use sidewalks and crosswalks • ●Keep vehicle doors locked while not in use to keep kids out of hot cars • ●Be a focused driver Never: • ●Leave children unattended in hot cars, near pools, lakes, streams or at the beach • ●Push, shove, run or play rough around the water • Dive head first into unknown waters • ●Stay in the sun too long without drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids • ●Play in the street or dart into the street to chase a ball or a toy • Allow children to cross a street without supervision • ●Let small medical problems fester. See a doctor before they become big problems

Stay alert Establish and check landmarks to know where you are in relationship to your spot on the beach. Take seriously the warnings of lifeguards or other safety personnel when storms are in the area. The beach patrol is in constant communication with the National Weather Service. When instructed to leave, quickly gather your belongings and do so immediately.

Tick talk Be aware of tick-borne illness, prevention

If you are bitten, do the following: • ●Mark the site of the bite. Remove the tick with pointed tweezers, pulling the tick perpendicular to the skin, and place it on a damp towel or piece of tape. The tick may be saved for future identification. • ●Clean your skin with soap and water and disinfect it, and check for more ticks. • ●Note the size of the tick that bit you. If the tick is engorged, or larger, then it may have been on you for a while, and your risk of infection is greater. • ●Call your provider and let them know you have been bitten.

Ticks can be very small, so careful examination is necessary to ensure you find them if you have been in a grassy or wooded area.

A creature hardly larger than the period at the end of this sentence can cause serious health problems. Tick season is upon us, and it’s as important to prevent tick bites as it is to correctly attend do them. Healthcare professionals at TidalHealth offer the following advice: • ●Use insect repellent that contains 22 to 30 percent DEET when heading into grassy or wooded areas. • Wear long sleeves, long pants and light-colored clothing (so ticks are easier to spot if they do land on you). • ●When returning home, take a shower within two hours to wash away any ticks that might not have bitten, and so you can spot them quickly if they have bitten. • ●Put your clothing in a dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes to kill any lingering ticks. • Examining yourself is very important; it can be difficult because ticks can be very small, so check carefully. • ●If you have pets, it’s doubly important to be aware of ticks. Even if you haven’t gone in the woods or through the grass, it’s very easy for pets to carry ticks home with them.

“The amount of time the tick is attached correlates to the risk of illness,” said Jordan Braniff, DNP, CRNP, of TidalHealth Primary Care in Berlin. “If a tick is found early, the risk of Lyme transmission drops significantly.” Your doctor can’t give you a test for Lyme disease or other tick-related illnesses right away, because it takes time for antibodies to form, and you might get a false negative. But your doctor should let you know what symptoms to look for, and when. In some cases, preventative antibiotics might be appropriate. Braniff said Lyme disease isn’t the only danger from ticks, so you need to make sure to remember when the bite happened, take note of any symptoms and let your provider know. Even if you are treated for Lyme disease, you run a risk of developing other infections as well. Braniff cautions that symptoms of tick-borne illnesses vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are fever, aches and pains and a rash. Since these can be easily overlooked and it can take time for symptoms to develop, Braniff emphasizes that people should make sure to look closely for tick bites and mark on a calendar when they are bitten. “Keep it in mind,” he said, “because treating these diseases early can make a difference.”

To make an appointment with Jordan Braniff, DNP, CRNP, of TidalHealth Primary Care, located at 9950 Main St. in Berlin, call 410-912-6710 or schedule online at tidalhealth.org.

It’s time to get outdoors COVID-19 made two things starkly clear: First, the virus took a heavier toll on people with complicating medical conditions; and second, a huge number of people on Delmarva have these complicating conditions. Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, lung conditions — many of these common issues allowed COVID-19 to become an uncommon threat. And it’s not just the pandemic; these conditions can contribute to cancer, heart failure and many more difficulties.

Get active With social options still limited due to the pandemic, this is a perfect time to start a fitness routine. It doesn’t have to be complicated — walking is one of the best fitness routines out there. It doesn’t require any special equipment or training, just commonsense precautions and comfortable footwear. If you feel unsafe by yourself, start a walking group with friends — outdoors; it can be a safe, socially distanced activity.

The good news is, people can take proactive steps to prevent or even reverse some of these conditions — and the steps are what your doctor has been saying all along: Diet and exercise.

Walking, ideally for 30 minutes a day or more on most days of the week, is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Some benefits of walking include:

“As with anything in healthcare, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Dr. Chris Snyder, TidalHealth Chief Quality Officer and a hospitalist who treated many COVID patients. “The primary care providers in our community have the skills and knowledge to guide your care through the hurdles of chronic illness. Early detection, early treatment, and continuity of care are the best defense for chronic illness. Over the last year, COVID has clearly demonstrated how chronic illness can impede the body’s ability to respond to environmental threats. Stay ahead of the curve with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and kidney disease to ensure your body’s capability to tolerate environmental change is optimal.”

• ●Reduced body fat

• ●Improved heart and vascular health

• ●More muscle power and endurance • ●Decreased risk of heart disease and stroke, and help managing high blood pressure and diabetes The pandemic also reintroduced the fun of bike riding to many people — in fact, new bicycles have been in short supply for months. Strava, an athletic social media company, found that cycling’s popularity doubled in 2020. While walking will allow you to notice parts of your neighborhood you might never have seen, biking will take you further and allow you to explore places you might not have been before. Biking is an especially good option for people new to a fitness routine, because it isn’t weightbearing, so it can be easier on the joints. It’s easy to build up to longer, more intense rides over time to maximize the benefit to your heart health and to burn calories. A large 2016 study of people aged 50 to 65 found that people who cycled for more than 30 minutes per day had a 40 percent lower risk of developing diabetes. Since diabetes risk increases as you age, that’s a great reason to dust off your beach cruiser. Of course, there are a few good precautions to make your ride as healthy as possible:

Assateague National Seashore is an ideal place to get outdoors and spot some of Delmarva’s native birds and wildlife.

• ●Always wear a helmet • ●Be alert and aware of traffic • ●Be careful at dusk — make sure you have a light and reflective gear if you ride later in the day or at night

• ●Make sure your seat is adjusted to the proper height. If you experience pain at the front of your knee, your seat might be too low. Eat healthy The popular pandemic baking trend might not be good for the waistline, but another trend can come to the rescue: gardening. Not only is it a healthy activity that lets you soak up some vitamin D, but fresh vegetables are a good source of nutrients and can be an inspiration to cook new dishes. If you have a zucchini glut this year, try making “zoodles” — spiral-cut zucchini that can replace pasta. At 19 calories per cup and loaded with potassium, folate, iron and vitamins C and A, zoodles have a fresh taste that livens up old pasta dishes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has these healthy eating tips to round out your diet: • Cut the sodium. Too much salt increases blood pressure, which raises the risk for heart disease and stroke. About 90% of Americans 2 years old or older consume too much sodium. Avoid processed and prepackaged food, which can be full of hidden sodium. • ●Bump up your fiber. Fiber in your diet helps you feel fuller longer. Fiber also helps control blood sugar and lowers cholesterol levels. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes (beans and peas) are good sources of fiber. • ●Aim for a variety of colors on your plate. Foods like dark, leafy greens, oranges, and tomatoes — even fresh herbs — are loaded with vitamins, fiber, and minerals.

Enjoy a perfect picnic If you’re looking for a great picnic area on Delmarva, here are a few that come highly recommended. Bon Appetit! wellness Staying Safe in the Sun SUNSCREEN IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF A COMPLETE SUN PROTECTION STRATEGY, BUT SUNSCREEN ALONE ISN’T ENOUGH TO KEEP YOU SAFE IN THE SUN #1 Apply water-resistant sunscreen Sunscreen is crucial to protecting yourself from sun damage. Dr. Moghaddam recommends at least SPF 30. “Research has shown that the way that normal people apply sunscreen is not adequate,” she explained. “In fact, most people only get half of the SPF that’s labeled on the bottle. That’s why I always tell my patients that a higher SPF is better.” You should apply one ounce — or a shot-glass-full — to the entire body every two hours. “This is what most of my patients struggle with,” Dr. Moghaddam said. “They’ll put it on, but then they don’t reapply, so they’re still getting tan or burnt, which is a sign that sun damage is occurring.”

W

ith summertime comes plenty of hours outdoors, enjoying the milder temperatures, with the shining sun and sparkling water. And while time in Mother Nature is good for the soul, too much sun exposure can cause harm. Here’s a stat to remember: 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. There are a few simple steps you can take, however, that can dramatically decrease the probability of that one being you. We asked Dr. Sara Moghaddam of Delmarva Skin Specialists in Selbyville to give us her top skincancer-prevention tips. Here’s what she had to say.

#2 Wear sun-protective clothing If remembering to reapply sunscreen is not your strong suit, consider wearing sun-

protective clothing, as well. This type of lightweight, protective clothing prevents UV radiation from reaching your skin. It’s measured in UPF — or ultraviolet protection factor — and has to do with the tightness of the fabric’s weave. This is a great option for active people, like golfers and kids, too. One thing to note: Just wearing regular clothes and hoping for some extra sun protection won’t cut it. According to Dr. Moghaddam, a regular white-cotton T-shirt has only been shown to have a UPF of 8. Also in the realm of sun-protective clothing — wide-brim hats. Opt for a hat with at least a 3-inch brim to help block the sun’s rays from your head and neck. Baseball hats are not effective for sun protection because they leave the ears, the back of the neck and the sides of the face exposed.

Worst case scenario — you’ve gotten a sunburn. What can you do to soothe and heal the area? According to Dr. Moghaddam, you should: 1. Take frequent cool showers/baths to relieve pain. 2. Use moisturizer after bathing to seal water into the skin. 3. Consider taking aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve discomfort or swelling. 4. Drink water! Sunburn draws water away from the rest of the body. 5. If blisters develop, keep greasy with petroleum jelly or moisturizer. Do not peel off blistered skin.

#3 Consider an additional vitamin supplement If you’re looking for a little extra protection, there’s a supplement you can take in capsule form that will bolster your other sun-protection efforts. Called polypodium leucotomas, this vitamin — an extract from a fern — acts as a powerful antioxidant and is

estimated to provide an additional SPF of 4. “I take it when I’m going to be out doing yardwork or on a sunny vacation, for extra protection,” Dr. Moghaddam said. #4 Get a skin check Whether you’ve been protecting yourself from the sun or not, getting checked by a board-certified dermatologist for skin cancer is important, and early detection is vital. Dr. Moghaddam says most skin cancer can be easily treated by a simple in-office procedure if it’s caught early enough. It’s never too early to have your first skin exam either. Based on what your dermatologist finds, they can tell you how frequently you need to be screened. “A good rule of thumb if you live in our beach community is to get checked on an annual basis,” Dr. Moghaddam says. In the meantime, keep an eye out for any areas of the skin that are bleeding, not healing or stick out among the rest — these require immediate attention by a dermatologist. Take these four tips into the summer with you and put your best foot forward when it comes to sun protection and skin cancer prevention. cs

WELLNESS

Stepping Out YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THE GUIDANCE THAT WALKING 10,000 STEPS PER DAY WILL KEEP THE DOCTOR AWAY AND THE WEIGHT OFF. WHERE DID THIS ADVICE COME FROM, AND IS ITS EFFECTIVENESS TRUE? Story by Nicole Davis

How, exactly, does walking 10,000 steps benefit you? We’re glad you asked.

1 It promotes weight loss. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis — or NEAT — is energy expended on all daily activity that isn’t exercise, eating or sleeping. This means that activities like walking contribute to your NEAT value, which affects the number of calories you burn each day. Research has shown that NEAT can account for anywhere from about 1550% of total daily energy expenditure depending on a person’s activity level. So, just by increasing your activity level via walking, you can make a significant dent in your daily caloric balance.

2 It boosts energy and mood. Walking — even a single walk — has been shown to both increase energy and lift your mood. Physically, walking increases blood and oxygen flow to your body, which helps you feel more alert, plus it boosts the production of endorphins, which are your body’s “feel-good” chemicals. Case in point: A study of young adults found that a 10-minute bout of brisk walking improved mood when compared to an inactive control group. These results were similar to a 10-minute bout of meditation.

3 It improves heart health. Because regular walking increases your heart rate and blood circulation, lowers your blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels, it’s a surefire way to make your heart healthier.

T

his magic number originated from a marketing campaign that ran right before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, when a Japanese company started selling a pedometer called the Manpo-kei, which essentially translates to “10,000 steps.” Long story short, the number stuck. There’s been plenty of research conducted since then to determine if 10,000 really is the be-all-and-end-all goal, and the consensus is this: It depends on many factors, like age and fitness level, but in general, 10,000 steps per day is considered a “reasonable target for healthy adults,” according to a research review published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.

58

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

4 It promotes healthy joints. Especially if you suffer from joint pain, walking is an effective way to manage pain and regain mobility. Walking increases blood circulation, which sends nutrients to the joints; it lubricates stiff areas, as well. If you’re not walking regularly now, start slow and work your way up to that 10,000-steps-per-day goal — your body and your mind will thank you for it. cs

THE 2021 BEACH AND BAY COTTAGE TOUR FEATURES A SOUTH BETHANY HOME DESIGNED TO ENJOY RESORT-STYLE LIVING A married couple that had been longtime summer residents of Delmarva fell in love with a waterfront lot in South Bethany Beach in 2017. The property delivered jaw-dropping views of the Assawoman Bay, and because it was also just a quick walk to the ocean, the couple felt that it was a “best-of-both worlds” location. They soon purchased the property and dreamed it would one day serve as a home away from home that would comfortably host their growing family for years to come.

They enlisted the help of local builder Bruce Mears, and their project officially broke ground in the fall of 2018. As with all of his clients, Mears was heavily engaged and remained creatively focused throughout the project, from the initial consultation and drawing stages to completion in 2019. “With my projects, we create something from a conversation. Then, I get to watch these folks enjoy their new home,” shared Bruce. This particular project was especially evolutionary, as it kept growing from initial ideas into the luxurious property it is now. Where once sat a seaside patch of land now stands an exquisite dwelling with a serene coastal-blue exterior and white trim.

The design of the home is geared toward the ultimate resort-style living. A unique feature is the reverse-living concept, with the living area on the top floor. Each bedroom offers a bay view, an amenity that is admired by all of their guests. The homeowners were also looking to embrace some natural light without the intensity or heat of harsh sunbeams. With this in mind, the windows were strategically placed, and the bedrooms are all equipped with custom blinds. “While it’s a large house, we didn’t want it to feel too large, and the design was geared toward comfort,” shared the homeowners.

They chose to source the interior design locally, through The Design Center of Rehoboth, which specializes in contemporary interiors and outdoorliving design. The furniture color palettes include varying blues, whites, and tans that pair perfectly with the natural coastal hues of the home’s seaside surrounding. Another focal point is the large, open-air kitchen, complete with white cabinetry and backsplash and silver fixtures. The massive countertop is ideal for cooking for large gatherings, and the magnificent overhanging pendant lights complement the natural light the space offers. The outdoor living area is truly spectacular, with a spacious pool overlooking the Assawoman Bay. The second-floor overhang provides shaded options for those looking to sprawl out on the first-floor lounge chairs. The third floor offers a patio with glass railings, as well as both lounge and dining spaces. The top-floor sundeck provides direct sunlight access and a scenic view of the bay and the Ocean City skyline. If you face the opposite direction, you can even spy the Atlantic Ocean.

“Where the lot is angled on the east side of the pool area, we constructed special walls from the pool level to the top floor. This allows the homeowners to have ultimate privacy. It’s like their own little resort,” shared Bruce. cs

Illuminating With Possibilities CREATIVITY AND PERSONALIZED SERVICE EARNED FANCY CUTZ ITS OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE IN THE PENINSULA Story by Jonathan Westman | Photography by Grant L. Gursky

rian Swain understands the value of a great education. The former teacher and principal of North Laurel Elementary School surrounded himself with industry experts when he founded Fancy Cutz landscaping company in 2006 with his wife, Halie, an educator herself who also teaches special-education classes to 3- and 4-year-olds with developmental disabilities. Brian credits Central Turf’s Dale Carey, in particular, for sharing his vast knowledge of irrigation, drainage techniques and landscape lighting that would ultimately allow them to expand their services. Their network of trusted allies has only grown over the years,

to include trade partners like David Hastings of Salisbury Brick and Warren Reid of Solid Image, as examples, and so has the Swains’ business. Fancy Cutz has evolved to become one of Sussex County’s premier landscapingand-hardscaping companies, offering complete outdoor solutions that range from grade work, turf management and pest control to irrigation, landscape lighting and custom-paver patios. The Swains got the opportunity to put their diverse talents on display at a newly built residence in The Peninsula — one of most prestigious communities in Sussex County — when its homeowners wanted something different for their backyard than what the

builder traditionally included. “Our builder only offered cookie-cutter patio styles,” the homeowner said. “We wanted something that would set our home apart and increase its value while providing us an outdoor relaxation-and-entertainment space. After seeing some of the work Fancy Cutz did at other locations, we knew Brian and his team would come through — and boy, did they ever!” The project started with FX landscaping lighting, which the homeowners can control from their phones, illuminating not only the residence’s architectural details but also the inspiration of others in the neighborhood to follow suit.

“Our builder only offered cookie-cutter patio styles. We wanted something that would set our home apart and increase its value while providing us an outdoor relaxation-andentertainment space. After seeing some of the work Fancy Cutz did at other locations, we knew Brian and his team would come through — and boy, did they ever!”

“Ours was the first house on the block to have night illumination,” the homeowner said. “Fancy Cutz did such a great job; a house two doors down did the same thing, and I have had several neighbors ask who did it for us.” Work commenced next in the backyard, as Brian and his team used roughly 22 tons of crushed concrete to level the slope of the yard and create the base for the patio. Next, wall systems were added to establish an aesthetic perimeter and the patio pavers were installed, which included decorative and defining borders of black Nicolock pavers that added even more style and sophistication to the setting, which overlooks the 15th fairway

of the Jack Nicklaus-designed signature golf course. The patio was finished with a grilling/ dining area topped with black granite and a custom firepit that emits up to 65,000 BTUs. Both locations provide the homeowners with ideal backdrops for entertaining family and friends or enjoying intimate evenings alone. Lastly, an irrigation system was strategically installed to provide the property’s new grasses with just the right amount of water at precisely the right time of day.

Brian said that this project, and other Fancy Cutz jobs, would not come to life without his and Halie’s talented crew, which grows to as many as 22 in peak season and includes three full-time employees who were Brian’s former students. “I love our entire team. They’re like family to us,” Brian said. “A couple of them were at-risk students at one time who could have fallen through the cracks, so for them to be thriving with us today is very special.” cs

hat began as the topic of casual conversation quickly evolved into the breathtaking backyard retreat of Rick and Karen Kron in Rock Hall, MD. The couple, who had purchased this property on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay in late 2017, were entertaining close family and friends one evening the following spring when someone remarked, “Wouldn’t it be cool to build a pool and a pool house here?”

Rick began to conceptualize that very night, envisioning how he could transform its expansive grassy yard into something truly special. It didn’t take long for the recently retired owner of a general-contracting firm in Philadelphia to put his talents and connections to work. The project list of musthaves was relatively small: They included an in-ground pool, outdoor kitchen and a pool house, but Rick and Karen were adamant that each “must have” an unobstructed view of the Bay from every angle possible.

RIGHT TIME OF NIGHT Rick and Karen Kron’s Rock Hall home transforms with the setting sun thanks to lighting designer Courtney Sarge of Streamlight Design in Elverson, PA.

Before the project could commence, however, the Krons had to negotiate the stringent sanctioning process, due to their property’s size and proximity to the Bay. “Because we are sitting only on half an acre, we required variances of the sideyard setback requirements,” Rick said. “We employed Bill Crowding of Crowding Engineering to help us navigate the variance and permitting process. Without his expertise and thorough knowledge of the area, the project would have never gotten started.” With the proper paperwork in hand, Rick naturally served as the project’s general contractor and hired its subcontractors, negotiated contracts, managed the schedule, purchased many of the materials and worked with the building inspector. He even designed the swimming pool, which was constructed by Coastal Pools of Queenstown from mid-May to mid-July 2018. Work continued throughout the summer, with the pool deck and outdoor kitchen completed at the end of September and early October, respectively.

70

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

Rick also knew the importance that landscaping would play in the project, so he didn’t leave any elements to chance. He brought in various experts to ensure all details were properly addressed, including landscape architect Max Ruehmund of M3 Architecture and Greg Orr of Fine Design Landscaping, both from Rock Hall. But the Krons’ assiduous attention to detail didn’t end there.

“We believe one of the smartest decisions we made was to hire lighting designer Courtney Sarge of Streamlight Design, who is based in Elverson, Pennsylvania,” Rick said. “We knew we were creating something special and felt strongly that it really could shine like a diamond at night with the right lighting. She really came through for us. We absolutely love how the entire project looks at night.”

Rick & Karen Kron

Construction on the pool house began in December 2018, with the primary project goal firmly at the core of its design. To fully incorporate the bay views, the Krons designed a load-bearing steel structure that did not contain a post or column at the corner of the building that faces the Bay. This ingenuity was taken even further when Rick and Karen had a custom-built, German-made NanaWall system installed, which allows them to slide open two sides of the pool house’s glass-paneled living-room walls, to offer panoramic views of the water. This openair concept is not only state-of-the-art but also the showstopping amenity of a highly elaborate project. The couple hired interior designer Trish Gorman of Gorman Designs in Villanova, PA, who coincidentally also owns a home in Rock Hall. She was tasked with designing the pool-house kitchen, choosing its millwork and finishes, and partnered with Karen on the selection of outdoor furniture. Karen personally selected the pool house’s furnishings and artwork. The pool house was completed in September 2019 and features a bunk room, full bath and outdoor shower. “This was a very personal project for us, and as such, we could talk about it for days,” Rick said. “We’re thrilled with how everything turned out.” cs

Take Cover PERGOLAS HAVE COME A LONG WAY OVER THE YEARS AND NOW OFFER INVITING SHADE SETTINGS IN A VARIETY OF TRENDSETTING STYLES AND MATERIALS Because pergolas are in such high demand, Houzz is calling 2021 “the year of the pergola.” A relatively easy addition to any deck or yard, pergolas are a great way to add shade, dimension and personality.

72

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

Here are some design tips for how pergolas can be used in any backyard: Define Deck Spaces Just like the inside of your home, you can establish separate areas for relaxing, cooking, dining and socializing. Pergolas are perfect for designating an “outdoor room,” making entertaining easier and helping to maximize the function and flow of your space. Create a Focal Point If you want to add some drama to your deck, consider incorporating a pergola that will capture attention and serve as a natural spot for guests to gather. Pergolas provide a great way to add interesting architectural elements to your outdoor design. Add Pops of Color Incorporating color is one of the easiest

design tricks to spruce up your space. Trex Pergola offers a variety of colors — from classic white and on-trend grays to bold hues, like orange and red — that can inject color into your backyard in a bold way. Grow Your Garden Up Create a vertical garden space with an open-top pergola structure, which works great for climbing plants, such as wisteria, honeysuckle and ivy. Plus, the structure itself can also be used for hanging baskets. If the vines are properly trained, they can cover over the pergola like a roof. Get Sun and Shade Retractable canopies are all the rage, allowing you to opt for shade during a hot day and stargaze at night. Canopies can come in a variety of materials, styles and colors.

Building Memories FOR MATT COVELL OF STRUCTURE, BETHESDA MAY BE WHERE HE WAS RAISED, BUT OCEAN CITY IS WHERE HE CALLS HOME Story by Jonathan Westman | Photography by Krista Valliant

M

att Covell may not have been born in Ocean City, but he’d probably change that if it were possible. The Bethesda native and owner of STRUCTURE, a custom-renovation, home-building and design firm, has a palpable affection for the resort community, first infused during his youth, when his family spent summers on 89th Street. “I know this sounds cliché, but I love Ocean City so much,” Matt said. “I feel a greater connection here than I do to DC in a lot of ways.”

While working at Bahia Marina one summer, he met coworker Seanna Zimmerman, an Ocean City local and Stephen Decatur High School graduate. They began dating, and after finishing college away from the Shore, returned to the beach to be married at St. Mary Star of the Sea church in 2007. The couple now have two daughters, ages 3 and 4, who love the beach town as much as their parents do. The youngest of six kids, Matt describes his family’s beach house growing up as a place where literally everyone and anyone was welcome.

TAKE THE TOUR The Covells’ beach bungalow will be featured on this year’s Sand Castle Home Tour, benefiting the Art League of Ocean City, October 1-31. To purchase tickets, visit SandCastleHomeTour.com.

“Between my parents, siblings, friends and frequent visitors, there was always a ton of people packed into a tiny space,” Matt recalled. “But because of that, it always felt like a party was happening.” The close family bonds and fond beach experiences that naturally developed within that small house back then inspired Matt’s vision for the classic beach bungalow he and Seanna now call their OC home. Located in the Little Salisbury area of Ocean City, a quaint and popular neighborhood that spans bayside from 86th Street to 94th Street, Matt had been interested in the property for years, passing it frequently on summer walks through the neighborhood where many of his siblings also now have homes.

HOME

CREATIVE FLOW Matt Covell’s beach bungalow renovation flipped the configuration of the home’s original footprint, dramatically enhancing the 1,000 sq. ft. layout inside and out.

He ultimately wrote a letter to the owner, sharing his history in Ocean City, love of the community and interest in one day purchasing the house if it were to ever become available. After some back-and-forth, they reached a deal. Built in 1964 and measuring about 1,000 sq. ft., the property had primarily served as a beach rental over the years — and it showed. Although its best days were long in the past, Matt could not only see its potential but felt a personal obligation to revive the home for the betterment of the community. Last year’s COVID-19 restrictions provided the opportunity for him and his talented crew to focus on the renovation. “We stripped the house entirely down to

80

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

the studs and then completely flipped the floor plan,” Matt said. “I wanted each space to have its own energy and excitement. Even though it’s small, this house has a lot of positivity, and it’s an enjoyable place to be.” Upon entry, guests are instantly welcomed by stunning Californian cement floor tiles, which are uniquely laid and asymmetrically integrated with hardwood flooring that guides them into the home. This subtle yet creative touch makes the undeniable statement that one is entering a house with a very cool vibe. The hall leads first to a guestroom and the master suite, where Matt added another touch of creativity. He extended the home’s front porch that wrapped around the master and then enclosed it. From the outside, passersby

are left to wonder what’s behind the new amenity. On the inside, the space has been transformed into a private, open-air extension of the master suite that includes an outdoor shower and two access points. The house continues to the girls’ nautically themed bedroom, complete with custom bunkbeds that feature storage opportunities underneath. The hallway generously opens to the family room and kitchen, which is rich with natural light and full of interest. Matt built a vaulted ceiling in the dining area during the renovation, to provide added height and dimension. Three large windows frame the space, which are accented by custom banquette seating and display-and-storage cabinetry.

Classical music isn’t a luxury. Now more than ever, it’s essential! As the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra’s 2020-2021 "Season of Strings” concluded on Thursday, April 22nd, 2021, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your patronage and continued support of the orchestra. It has been a unique year for performing arts organizations and we are grateful that together we have been able to persevere and through the options of live performances and live-streamed performances continue to bring classical orchestral music to our audiences across the DelMarVa peninsula. The MSO could have abruptly canceled the season, as so many other performing arts institutions chose to do. But we were determined to bring live music to our audience despite the limitations of the pandemic. We strongly believe that musicians must make music and our audiences need to experience live performances. Our Board of Directors rallied and with the leadership of committee chair Courtney Kane and others, our MSO “Live Streaming” was born. This allows us to offer our audience options that would provide safe access to the MSO’s season of live concerts. It has been a time-consuming and energetic ride but we are so grateful that we have persevered and triumphed. Again, we say thank you to each of you who have joined us for this incredibly unique season. As we soldier on through this time, the MSO Board of Directors has embarked on a path of bold thinking and evolution, planning for the time when we will once again perform post-pandemic. We are in the process of creating an innovative 5-year plan that includes consideration of the following initiatives:

Youth & Education: 1. The creation of a Mid-Atlantic Symphony Youth Orchestra 2. Virtual Master Classes for middle and high school students available to schools across the DelMarva Peninsula 3. Podcast classes involving Orchestra Members and Students

Concerts: 4. The addition of MSO Summer Pops Concerts 5. Soliciting CD recording contracts with selected soloists.

How to Support the MSO In the midst of the pandemic cloud, we feel particularly motivated to be at the forefront of the performing arts scene here on DelMarVa as we move ahead cautiously, but with determination. Planning is well under way for the MSO’s 24th season, in which we hope to perform many of the wonderful orchestral works we were unable to perform during the season just concluded. Again, we thank you for your support and enthusiasm for the MSO. We look forward to many exciting seasons together! Fondly, Jeffrey Parker Chairman / MSO Board of Directors

The family room is the ideal size for cozily watching a movie and for entertaining, as it contains an awning window that swings open to the outside deck and creates a bar-like atmosphere on the other side. Crisp, white walls allow for striking and unexpected uses of colors and textures throughout the house. These come in the forms of stunning tile in the master bath, vibrantly patterned wallpaper in the guest bathroom, the kitchen’s black appliances, island cabinets and intricate backsplash, and a mesmerizing wall mural by famed Baltimore artist Peter Frechette. Other bold pieces of art can be found throughout the house, with work by local artist Evan Fitzgerald adorning the walls of the foyer and custom-painted surfboards by DC artist Matt Corrado featured on the private porch, among others. Tributes, large and small, to the resort’s surfing heritage and beach culture are strategically on display, too.

FAMILY FIRST Matt says that he and Seanna cherish creating new memories with their daughters.

A spacious rear deck extends the inside outward, and its surprisingly large yard will one day be the site of a guesthouse and swimming pool. “I design and build so many custom projects for my clients that it was really fun to do something for my family this time. I approached this project toward creating memorable family experiences at the beach, like the ones Seanna and I experienced as kids,” Matt said. “I think we’ve also created a home that celebrates the history and charm of Ocean City in a modern, coastal way. At my core, I love renovations, and I want to contribute to this community by giving back to this town and its people by returning homes like this to their glory. It’s a tiny contribution but hopefully an impactful one.” cs

THE WICOMICO COUNTY RECREATION, PARKS & TOURISM DEPARTMENT’S NEW LITTLE LEAGUE CHALLENGER PROGRAM GIVES CHILDREN WITH PHYSICAL AND INTELLECTUAL CHALLENGES THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY THE GREAT GAME OF BASEBALL Story by Jonathan Westman Photography by Grant L. Gursky

T

he opening day of baseball season is always one of the most anticipated times in sports. It signals the dawn of spring, a renewed sense of optimism and the return of a game that offers so much joy and camaraderie for players, coaches and fans alike. For the ballplayers of the inaugural Little League Challenger Program in Salisbury, a new league for young individuals with physical Cheyanne Shrieves and Steve Miller and intellectual challenges, taking the field for their first game was all the more special. This was their chance to experience the thrill of hearing their name announced over a loudspeaker, the rush of adrenaline that accompanies hitting a ball and racing around the bases and the emotions felt when a crowd cheers their accomplishments. Organized and conducted through the Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism Department, the Challenger Program is Little League’s adaptive baseball platform for players ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in school. Games are typically 1 or 2 innings in length, and everyone bats and plays defense every inning. Players are accompanied by “buddies,” who assist Challenger athletes in the areas of batting, base-running and defense, but only as needed. Often, buddies are peer athletes who are participating in the Little League Baseball or Softball programs, and on this day, members of Salisbury University’s club baseball team were on hand, serving as buddies to the players.

The Community

Chris Bitters knows baseball. The longtime general manager of the Delmarva Shorebirds has worked in the front offices of minor league organizations since 1999. He also knows the meaning of community, having served on the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore board in addition to being named the 2012 Rotarian of the Year by the Wicomico Rotary Club for his civic contributions. So, when he and Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism Director Steve Miller were brainstorming about potential new initiatives, Bitters proposed the Challenger Program, knowing that Maryland’s Eastern Shore didn’t have its own division. The pair formed an exploratory committee, and after speaking with parents, various community groups and the Wicomico Board of Education, concluded the program was needed locally. “Things started running downhill from there,” Miller said. A fundraising effort commenced and included state and county grants, contributions from the Perdue Foundation, the Donnie Williams Foundation, the Shorebirds Community Fund, local Rotary clubs, as well as private donations, among others, securing the necessary resources. “It’s been tremendous. This has been a community-driven effort from day one,” Miller said.

86

CoastalStyleMag.com • July/August 2021

“The Perdue Foundation was really the gas in the engine that we needed to really propel this forward, not just the amount of the donation, but the fact that they were behind it. It was a big deal to share that we had their support when we met with other potential donors. I don’t know that we’d be here without them.” Perdue Farms Chairman Jim Perdue, whose father, Frank, played baseball while

attending Maryland State Teachers College and later donated the land where the Shorebirds’ field, Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, stands, threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Challenger’s opening day. “The number of smiles out here tells you what this is all about. My dad really loved baseball, and baseball has been very special to our family. We’re so excited to be part of this,” Perdue said. “This is a gorgeous field

— a field that is going to allow kids to enjoy what this sport is all about.” The project extends beyond baseball, through the creation of a nearby, all-inclusive playground, sponsored by the Donnie Williams Foundation, and a sensory trail behind the field that provides players and their families additional opportunities for interaction and connection. “The playground is completely adaptive for kids who may be in a walker or wheelchair, and all of the equipment is accessible and designed for kids of all ability levels to play together,” Miller said. “During our planning discussions with parents, they shared that a sensory trail could be very beneficial. For example, if a child with autism needed some time in a quiet space because there was too much activity taking place around them on the field, the parent and the child could walk on the trail and find quiet time alone. There are three interactive activity pods on the trail now that offer children the opportunity to play in a more serene environment when necessary. We’re hoping to add a couple pods each year and introduce some new elements to the trail.” Local Rotary clubs also built pavilions next to the field for families to dine together, complete with cutouts in the tables for wheelchairs and full changing stations in the event an accident were to occur while at the complex — providing a discreet and important amenity for parents and their children.

The Field

With its debut, on April 6, 1992, Baltimore’s Camden Yards was celebrated throughout baseball for its retro features, modern amenities and salute to Orioles’ franchise greats in a courtyard setting with grand iron archways and brick walkways, lifelike bronze sculptures and handsomely engraved plaques that commemorate their achievements. Camden Yards ushered in a new era of retro-style ballparks, which, in part, has been used in the design and construction of 22 Major League Baseball parks since. It’s been said that when you’re at Camden Yards, you know you’re at the park where the Big Leaguers play. Organizers for the new Challenger Program had plans for a special field at the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex, too. Located between Fields 7 and 8, Field 7½ features soft, colorful synthetic turf, spacious dugouts and bleachers outfitted with shade structures. The Perdue logo occupies its rightful place on the turf along the first- and third-base lines, and banners of the field’s corporate supporters hang two-by-two along the outfield fence. Bryan LeCompte, the visionary behind Yard Designs, Inc. and YDI Apparel, was one of the first community members to get behind the Challenger initiative — and he designed and created elements with local contractors that elevated Field 7½ beyond expectations. “We wanted to give it a Camden Yards feel and create a World Series feeling for these kids every time they come here to play,” LeCompte said. A majestic wrought-iron arch, adorned with the Field 7½ logo, welcomes players and their families to the field. The one-of-akind experience continues along a brickpaved, landscaped walkway that honors key contributors of the project with bronze plaques. “I can’t speak enough of what Bryan did out here,” Miller said. “He took something that was going to be special and took it to another level. Now, when these kids come through the arch and pass the bronze plaques, it is just incredibly special for them.” “This was a heartfelt team effort from everyone who gave their time and talents

to transform a concept into a reality,” LeCompte said. “The greatest feeling in the world is to give, especially to those who can’t ever repay you. This project exemplifies the true spirit of giving — and the reward for everyone is simply to watch these kids play the game of baseball in an incredible setting. They deserve it.”

The Players

Six-year-old Cheyanne Shrieves had been rehearsing for her big moment for weeks. The traditionally shy and reserved little girl from Delmar, MD, stood in her bedroom, make-believe microphone in hand, preparing to say the biggest two words of her life. Born with Down syndrome, Cheyanne practiced over and over, determined to not only shine on her big stage — but own it. As county officials, distinguished

dignitaries, leaders of local industries and her fellow players lined Field 7½, with TV cameras rolling and photographers capturing her every step and with a standing-room-only crowd in attendance, the time had come. Head held high, Cheyanne confidently walked from the third-base dugout onto the field, ready to officially commemorate the debut of the greater-Salisbury area’s Little League Challenger Program. With her two tiny hands firmly wrapped around the microphone, Cheyanne proudly proclaimed, “Play ball!” to the roar of the crowd, which enthusiastically cheered her decree. “She had it down pat, to the point where she almost had laryngitis,” said Cheyanne’s mother, Heather. “She was very excited for the opportunity and really enjoyed it.” The inaugural Challenger season opened with four teams of 10 players and provided them with much more than the opportunity to be on the field — it solidified for each a position of acceptance.

“Letting somebody be on a team is one thing, but it doesn’t guarantee inclusion,” said Heather. “That word really hits home with me — and it applies to this field, to this league and at the playground, too. Cheyanne has friends that use gait walkers and wheelchairs, and here, they can all play together and just be kids. Everyone is included. They’re actually playing and having a great time, and that’s a big thing.” Through the Challenger initiative, the Shrieves family has made new and meaningful connections with families of Cheyanne’s teammates and players from other teams, creating a network of camaraderie and support that Heather said didn’t exist previously. While based in Salisbury, the Little League Challenger Program hosts players from Somerset, Dorchester and Worcester counties, and officials are hopeful that its availability reaches families across the Shore, to grow the league and its support system. “We want this to be a hub facility where kids can come and play and build relationships,” Miller said. “We can envision really big things happening here for years to come.” cs

Berlin’s newest B&B, The Inn Berlin, combines modern luxury and hospitality with history and character. This Victorian estate has a long history, dating back to the 1790s, and it took on new ownership in 2020 when Maya and Marco Tomasello purchased the property. The couple then oversaw months of exterior and interior renovations, giving the notable home a modern redesign. While the updates are drastic, the property’s rich history is still apparent in each unique room, delivering the perfect mix of old and new.
