JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 STYLE CELEBRATING LOCAL ARTISTS A CHILL WINTER AT BAR MUMBO BEACH BOUND WITHOUT BOUNDARIES coastal NOMINATE FEBRUARY 1-29!
Settled on an elevated bluff overlooking the Wicomico River’s bend and surrounded by non-tidal ponds is a bucolic horse farm with several hundreds of acres of pastures, pristine coastal forested space — a delightfully recluse yet conveniently relevant island location. And on that Maryland escape is a majestic reproduction of an 18th century Williamsburg Manor house that stands like a seminal figure after a five-year, full-on historic preservation by Bryan LeCompte of Yard Designs, Inc. in Salisbury.
“I love history and creating timeless pieces, and this was a true opportunity to be a key instrument in bringing this home back to its glory, while making it a reflection of its owners,” Bryan says, who initially found the property in distress. It had been neglected and taken under the wing of equestrian lovers who appreciate its past and were inherently drawn to the land.
The landmark project was a labor of love for LeCompte, who brought his interior-exterior design experience to a rollcall of painstakingly detailed materials selections, installations and furnishings. “The project’s biggest challenge was working on the interiors and exteriors at the same time,” Bryan says. “We began in 2018 and worked through the global pandemic, dealing with the industry’s challenges of supply and demand.”
“I was honored to be a part of this project and help the homeowners realize their vision,” he says, humbly proud of the outcome for its owners who breathe life into this legacy property.

Twists and Turns: An Artful Path
ARTIST WILL HEMSLEY’S WORK CELEBRATES THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE EASTERN SHORE
Written by Joe Willey | Photography by Jill Jasuta
30 CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2024
Ideas spread out through generations, like twisting tributaries of a river. It is an artist’s joy to navigate a sinuous course, absorbing various influences and leaving others. Some, like painter and sculptor Will Hemsley, fluidly move through ideas and bring them together. And the knowledge he gathers from each impacts how he treats the other.
Will is interested in the world around him and not only the Chesapeake Bay region and his art but also how all disciplines — science, literature, economics — connect. He is a keen observer and thinker. The water coursing through the Eastern Shore is an apt metaphor for the influences coursing through his work.
A local Eastern Shoreman, Will is originally from Kent Island and descends from the venerated American Revolution veteran and aide-de-camp of then-general George Washington, Tench Tilghman. His father, Tilghman Hemsley, is an artist and charter boat captain. Undoubtedly, he learned much from his father, inheriting both the love of salt water and the love of creating.
Naturally autodidactic, the compartmentalized way he received information in high school frustrated him. But during college and early in his career, as he saw connections everywhere — it changed things for him. “In art, experimentation rules,” he says. The freedom he found in exploration would be crucial early in his career.
While attending St. Mary’s College, Will trained as a painter, only taking one sculpture class. Later, a client who had purchased paintings explained that he was looking for a sculpture of Canada geese and asked if he could create what he was looking for. Without pausing, Will said, “Yes.” Improvising, he took geese from his freezer and used the birds as models for the new commission. Though his sculpture experience was limited, he ignored the obstacles, creating a celebrated work.

Moving between two unlike mediums — painting and sculpture — seems natural to Will. He knows each intimately and is philosophical about each. Painting, he says, is trickery, sleight of hand to make the flat surface seem threedimensional, while sculpting is like wrestling, fighting the material and shaping it into a new physical form.
In Centreville, a 6,000-square-foot workspace houses his studio and a gallery space presenting his work alongside the work of other artists. The gallery hosts four shows of new work each year. The space will soon house a fine arts foundry to cast his work and the work of others. This venture is another way Will is experimenting with his artwork.
Will’s projects have ranged from memorials for fallen soldiers and wildlife sculptures to paintings that celebrate hard-working watermen and the natural beauty of the Eastern Shore. For him, it is all connected. The path to satisfying and appreciated work twists and turns until it straightens out in a new and gratifying direction. With each successive painting or sculpture, new ideas unfold. CS

JENNIFER HUDSON CREATES MULTIDIMENSIONAL STORIES DEPICTING FORESTS OF WILDLIFE AND FLORA IN HER CONTEMPORARY PAPER ART WORKS
Written by Kristen Hampshire
It was a happy accident of sorts. Jennifer Hudson had purchased a smattering of various art papers she admired for her watercolor paintings and put them on hold. “The paper itself was so beautiful, I didn’t want to layer paint on top of it,” says the Ellicott City-based artist, who studied at the Baltimore School for the Arts with every intention of pursuing a painting career, which she did for some time.
Then the paper.
“I had an X-Acto knife, and the goal was to see what I could do with just the paper itself — to see if I could bring out the beauty of the object,” she relates.
Deploying her design experience and illustrating skills, she began to finely cut and layer the papers to create a sculptural scene
that was refreshingly multi-dimensional. “Every piece is a new challenge. Every piece is engaging,” she says of how her self-taught career in paper cutting grew out of a seed of an idea.
Her highly detailed hand-cut, delicate works display movement, texture and dimension. She’s drawn to wildlife subjects, mainly scenes close to her home studio that include birds — “I love birds,” she says — along with foxes, deer and horses, an homage to the many nearby equine rescue centers.
Jennifer’s shows travel the country, and The Art of Storytelling exhibition will land at Lewes’ Peninsula Gallery February 10 -March 10, with The Paper Forest solo show running June 14-July 14 at Rehoboth Art League. For the last
eight years, her art home has been HorseSpirit Art Gallery in Savage, prior to its closing at the end of 2023. She has shown works extensively through the Society of Animal Artists and Guild of American Papercutters. Through contemporary paper art, Jennifer is unleashing her imagination by thoughtfully piecing together works that are part realism, part illustrative whimsy. She says, “The forest is my own playful setting while the animals are based off of reference photos.”
A Layered Process
Jennifer’s works are prefaced by mockups, much in the way a seamstress fashions a pattern from muslin to test its style and fit before sewing in fine material. “I like to get an idea of how pieces will layer together without

any pulling or tugging that can weigh the pieces down,” she explains.
“I work in multiple layers of paper, so every art piece can be seven to 15 layers of hand-cut paper and it’s an engineering challenge to make sure the paper lays correctly, the image is legible and the design I have in mind is coming across in a sculptural form,” she explains.
As she has advanced her technique, played with layering, tested tools and prodded with texture, she also began creating her own custom hand-dyed papers. “I love the chemistry of it, the reactions when you layer colored ink over colored paper and see the result and what tones different combinations take on,” she relates.
Jennifer’s cutting tool is a No. 11 X-Acto knife — the standard size with a triangular scalpel. Her go-to materials are archival drawing paper and a book-binding adhesive paste that dries into a flexible hold to mitigate warping that can result from this phyllo-esque method. Another deterrent: the final step of pressing the work.
As for the cutting room floor, Jennifer says every bit of scrap that falls is repurposed and can even supply inspiration for the next pieces. Small details are born from minuscule shreds. “And if there is anything that is too small to take a cut out of, I’ll use those to make paper,” she says, relating how the papers take shape as lace as she slices. “The paper begins to act more like fabric.”
Anticipating the year’s upcoming shows, particularly those in her Eastern Shore stomping grounds, Jennifer is inspired to share her flora and animals and to experience how viewers interpret the scenes. She says, “It’s a completely different experience seeing the works in person and getting up close to the detail, the texture — like the difference between seeing a photo of a sculpture and the real thing.” CS

CHRIS RICHARD COMBINES HIS MANY CREATIVE TALENTS TO PRODUCE INSPIRING AND UNIQUE WORKS
Written by Joe Willey | Photography by Jill Jasuta
Few art mediums are as elemental as clay, wood and pigment. Some artists transform these basic materials, intentionally hiding the intrinsic nature and the rawness from the observer. But Chris Richard creates works of art that never obscure the substance of the medium. Instead, he transforms those elemental things with a unique style and vision.
Now living on the bank of the Choptank River in Denton, MD, Chris grew up in New Jersey. His mother was a gifted artist — a sculptor who created realistic work in plasticine and later bronze. But it was a high school ceramics teacher and her husband, also a ceramics teacher, who patiently inspired Chris to explore the craft and develop an important early aesthetic.
After earning his master’s degree from Edinboro University in PA, he first considered teaching. But when a solo exhibition at a prestigious gallery unexpectedly sold out, Chris became a full-time studio artist, focusing on creating work for collectors.

Master of Mosaic
JEN WAGNER'S UNRELENTING ENTHUSIASM FOR THE MEDIUM INSPIRES STUDENTS AND COLLECTORS AROUND THE WORLD
The Eastern Shore of Maryland is distinct for its tributaries, shorelines and transient tides. Layers of shapes and colors move languidly throughout the seasons as the crisp light of spring slowly transforms into the dull glow of winter. Photography and painting have traditionally isolated a moment, but mosaic art, using shaped bits of glass, tile and stone, changes with the vibrating reflection of water, earth and light. Mosaic artist and Eastern Shore native Jen Wagner is immersed in the area and creates work that shimmers like the landscape she loves.
Jen was born in Cambridge but moved to St. Michaels when she was only three. Now, she has a love for the town that nurtured her. She says, “When I’m in St. Michaels, I’m home.” Like many, the benefits of growing up in a small community were hidden by hopes of adventure. After moving away, she discovered what she had lost. Jen returned a few years later.
Initially, she wanted to be a writer and had no interest in the visual arts. When she took a class with a ceramics and jewelry artist, she discovered her creativity had a tactile side. The physicality of creating mosaic art intrigued and excited her. The materials, from
glassy smooth to dryly coarse, piqued an untapped talent. This new outlet was a joyful obsession. Even between waves of nausea while pregnant with her first child, she would work on a mosaic project — shaping glass and tile, securing it to a backing board, and locking the tiles in place with grout.
The process inherent in constructing each mosaic impacts how she works. Each new piece begins with a well-thought-out design, but the creation is fluid, and each work has surprises. Jen is a problem solver. Admittedly, that skill is used more than any other.
A one-person operation by nature and choice, Jen relishes being on a ladder

or scaffold, placing glass or tiles, and finalizing the nearly finished piece before it is ready to be revealed. Her mosaic installations embellish buildings across the Eastern Shore, Washington DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Smaller stained glass and mosaic creations are sold to buyers around the world.
Like the materials she uses, her untiring love of the medium is durable. So is her reputation with those who have learned in her classes. The classes are a dialogue — her students learn from her and she from them. She takes her time. Instead of limiting a class to six weeks, Jen is flexible. Some students have worked on a piece for years, coming to the studio to add tiles and glass when there is an opportunity. Instead of frustration, she is excited to see someone’s progress.
An enthusiasm for teaching extends to young people, also. Jen teaches youth camps during the summer — June and August at the Easton YMCA and July at the Queen Anne’s County YMCA. Like the adult classes, she allows the students to own the process and think through and around the problems. “The kids go at it like the adults,” she says. When the piece is complete, they know it is all their work.
Ironically, the solidity of mosaic art can eloquently capture movement. Jen’s personality and willingness to share her talent with others impact the mosaics she creates. Her work flashes and changes instead of sitting solid and immobile. The process that captured her now captures what she sees glinting in the sun or hidden in the fields. The more she continues to create art and teach others to create, the more we see it, too. CS

KIRK MCBRIDE AND LYNNE LOCKHART SHARE A LOVE OF ART AND A LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER
Written by Joe Willey
Portrait by Krista Valliant
Being a painter is a reclusive profession. How each one sees their surroundings is unique and isolated by definition — picking details interesting to them and ignoring others. Even creating a piece of art by laying a brush thick with paint on a board or canvas is a solo pursuit. But some are lucky enough to have another artist near, encouraging and pushing them forward to new and better work. Two professional painters living in Berlin, Lynne Lockhart and Kirk McBride, have an almost idyllic situation. They have found a way to paint alone — together.
Lynne and Kirk are married, and though they share a home, they have separate studios at the back of their property. The proximity of the two studios allows each artist space to work but makes it easy to invite advice or encouragement when one or both need it.

Lynne Lockhart
Tiny Thunder 6 X 6
Convoluted is how Lynne describes her path to being a professional artist. Her first drawings were in crayon on walls in her family's home. In grade school, she painted with the readymade tempera used in many kids’ art programs. But Lynne has always been interested in animals, too. At Salisbury University, she double majored — in biology and art.
Working in oils, Lynne builds texture with vigorous brushstrokes, sometimes shoving her brush through the stiff paint to create a sense of motion, like a snapshot with a slow shutter speed. Her compositions highlight her wry humor, showcasing a point of view like the back of a pair of horses or children’s toys similar in shape and color to a painting of dancers by the revered French artist Edgar Degas.
It was Lynne who urged Kirk to use oils instead of trying to replicate the qualities of oils in his watercolors. And like Lynne, he painted on the side, determined to paint more each year. His technique and understanding of painting came from talking to other artists at plein air events and visiting museums where he could search paintings for understanding. He has an affinity for illustrators who worked in the first half of the 20th century. A favorite of Kirk’s is N.C. Wyeth, whose

energetic compositions and dramatic use of color impact his work. But McBride continually hones his skills by standing at his easel and painting.
No matter the subject — landscapes, architecture, figures — Kirk’s work is about light and dark. His paintings are known for vibrant color and how shadows play against the dynamic light. His realistic style never mimics photography. Bold color and confident brushstrokes tell the viewer this is paint.
Cloud paintings have been Kirk’s recent focus. The clouds dominate the image, leaving the landscape a stabilizing yet minor role. For an artist interested in the balance of light and dark, clouds may be the most natural subject.
Both Lynne and Kirk work steadily and constantly, spending time in the company of their paintings almost as much as each other. They have the space they need to create and the buyers to continue painting. Each has taken a variety of influences and used them to create work that is solely their own. Though the sources of inspiration for the two are varied, perhaps the most profound influence on each is the other. CS

Advancing Cancer Care at Atlantic General
TWO TOP-TIER CANCER TECHNOLOGIES, FIRST TO THE LOWER EASTERN SHORE, HELP EASE PATIENTS’ DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT JOURNEYS
Written by Kristen Hampshire
During an emotionally and physically distressing time in life, there is hope for more convenience, comfort, self-preservation and dignity with two new cancer treatment advances available at Atlantic General Hospital’s John H. ‘Jack’ Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center.
For patients facing an excisional breast biopsy or lumpectomy, Merit Medical’s SCOUT wireless breast localization for pinpointing lesions preserves more healthy tissue, increases the likelihood of completely removing
a cancerous lesion, and conserves more healthy tissue. The pre-surgical procedure is now available at the Eunice Q. Sorin Women’s Diagnostic Center.
Also, those managing the side effects of chemotherapy can decrease the risk of hair loss with the Paxman Scalp Cooling System, known as cold cap treatment, empowering patients to feel a greater sense of control and privacy. The Burbage Regional Cancer Care Center in Berlin is Delmarva’s first facility to offer a therapy that can encourage acceptance of difficult treatment
regimens.
Both advances were funded in part by a $100,000 gift from local businessman and philanthropist Jack Burbage.
“We are invested in making sure we meet your medical needs and emotional needs because we’re in this together, in the community, and we have that extra level of awareness and understanding because we are all one big family here on the Eastern Shore,” says Chanelle Lake, director of the John H. ‘Jack’ Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center.

SCOUT: Pre-Surgical Accuracy and Convenience
Performing up to 70 breast biopsies and lumpectomies annually with expectations for growth, Alae Zarif, MD, says the SCOUT wireless breast localization technology can significantly improve patient experience. “Anything we can do to reduce the complexity of navigating the myriad steps of the diagnosis and treatment process for individuals with cancer is a good thing,” says Dr. Zarif, a breast surgeon at Atlantic General Hospital and the John H. ‘Jack’ Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center.
Before SCOUT, traditional wire localization, like other healthcare facilities in the region provide, required inserting a hooked wire into the breast to mark a lesion’s location. The wire end protrudes from the breast, restricting movement. If displaced, the marker location would be inaccurate and delay surgery. Logistically, the traditional method created some logjams in the operating room (OR).
With SCOUT wireless localization, a tiny device smaller than a grain of rice is placed into the abnormal tissue using mammogram or ultrasound imaging guidance. The “reflector” can be placed any time prior to surgery by the radiologist and is activated once it is placed in the breast tissue. Patients can resume normal activity until their surgery date.
During surgery, SCOUT’s 360-degree detection capabilities locate the exact position of the lesion, providing instant response readings to guide the dissection path.
“This technology has allowed us to reduce surgery time for breast biopsies and lumpectomies,” Dr. Zarif says. “It also frees up the ORs and staff to begin other surgery cases that are scheduled for the day, which is a benefit to other patients.”
Importantly, a more precise excision is possible. “This reduces the need to remove additional tissue to ensure a healthy margin,” he says.
Additionally, there’s more peace of mind for patients wondering, “What if the whole lesion wasn’t removed?”
Dr. Zarif says, “The likelihood of having to go back in and remove additional tissue is reduced with this technology. It’s one less thing for patients to worry about during an incredibly difficult time of their lives.”

Scalp Cooling to Curb Hair Loss
Another draining aspect of the cancer journey is facing chemotherapy side effects that serve as a reminder of the disease, including losing hair. Studies show that 10% of cancer patients will refuse chemotherapy or request a less effective treatment to avoid losing a significant portion of their hair, Lake related.
“I have taken care of many women who are concerned about their children’s reaction to their hair loss as a result of treatment,” Lake says. “Hair loss can cause an emotional response, and if you are dealing with cancer and treatment side effects, having the option to use the Paxman may help with the healing process.”
For some, losing hair degrades self-confidence. Others do not want to
discuss their condition, and hair loss tells a story they don’t want to share. There are many reasons patients would choose a treatment that decreases the likelihood of alopecia, which usually occurs within two weeks of starting a chemotherapy regimen. Because chemotherapy targets all rapidly dividing cells in the body, hair follicles are attacked — hair is the second-fastest dividing cell.
The Paxman Scalp Cooling System is the only alternative to this devastating side effect.
The science behind it parallels the body’s response when you ice an injury. “The ice restricts blood flow to that area, decreasing swelling and pain,” Lake says.
By cooling the scalp and restricting blood flow to cells in hair follicles, chemotherapy does not immediately

find and attack the once fast-dividing cells. “Having the scalp cooled a few degrees before, during and after chemo restricts blood flow enough that hair follicles are less injured by the chemotherapy,” she says.
Typically, a patient receives a cool cap treatment about 30 minutes to one hour prior to chemo in a clinical setting. The cap stays on during treatment and up to 45 minutes afterward.
There is no guarantee. Most patients experience some level of thinning or shedding, and efficacy depends on the type of chemotherapy. Those receiving Taxane treatments historically experience the least hair loss, Lake says, reporting that 50% to 65% develop Grade 1 Alopecia (on a scale of 1 to 3). “Grade 1 is very mild,” she says.
In a recent clinical trial, 7 out of 8 patients experienced only Grade 1 Alopecia, Lake adds. “That is a wonderful rate that proves efficacy and that this device really works.” CS

Is weight-loss surgery right for you?
Medications are gaining popularity, but surgery may be the best long-term option
Embarking on a weight-loss journey is a deeply personal decision, and the path taken varies from person to person. For some, the choice lies between weight-loss surgery and medications.
This decision is woven into individual circumstances, medical history, and personal preferences. It’s crucial to recognize that what might be deemed “better” for one person may not hold true for another, as both weightloss surgery and medications come with their own set of advantages and considerations.
The power of weight-loss surgery
Bariatric surgeries, including gastric bypass or gastric sleeve procedures, stand as potent catalysts for substantial and sustained weight loss. This is particularly beneficial for individuals grappling with obesity.
Beyond the visible effects, surgery can induce profound changes in metabolism and hormonal balance, leading to weight loss and often contributing to improvements in conditions like type 2 diabetes.
In some instances, weight-loss surgery has demonstrated its prowess in delivering durable and long-term results, outshining the potential of medications.
Scientific studies affirm that bariatric surgery not only aids in weight loss, but also showcases tangible improvements or resolutions in conditions associated with obesity, ranging from type 2 diabetes to hypertension and sleep apnea.
Like any medical procedure, weight-loss surgery is not without its inherent risks, including the possibility of infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to anesthesia.
56 CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2024
Successful outcomes post-surgery hinge on substantial lifestyle modifications, necessitating changes in dietary habits and the inclusion of regular exercise in daily routines.
What to know about weight-loss medications
Medications offer a non-invasive avenue for weight management, and some possess the ability to curtail appetite and manage cravings, fostering weight loss. However, the efficacy of medications relies heavily on consistent and long-term adherence, a challenge for some individuals.
The extent of weight loss may also be less pronounced compared to the transformative outcomes of surgery, and medications come with their own set of potential side effects, with individual responses varying.
The decision between weight-loss surgery and medications is highly individual and necessitates thoughtful consideration. Consultation with healthcare professionals is paramount, taking into account factors such as overall health, personal preferences, and the presence of other medical conditions.
Achieving weight-loss is not a one-size-fits-all approach; rather a tailored journey toward a healthier and more balanced life.

TidalHealth takes a personalized approach to joint replacement
William Doran, DO, FAAOS of TidalHealth Orthopedics has performed more robotic joint replacement procedures than any robotic surgeon in the region, and he’s the only surgeon in Delaware who performs robotic anterior hip surgery.
Using the Mako robot, he performs less-invasive hip and knee replacement surgery and offers each patient an individualized treatment plan.
Prior to surgery, a CT scan of the patient’s hip or knee joint is obtained. This generates a three-dimensional model of their unique anatomy. The 3D model helps surgeons see details they are typically unable to see with an x-ray alone. This information helps Dr. Doran determine the optimal size, placement, and positioning of each patient’s implant.
Throughout the procedure, the Mako robot provides realtime data to the surgeon. This allows him to continuously assess the movement and tension of the new joint and adjust the surgical plan if needed.
Dr. William Doran of TidalHealth Orthopedics has performed more robotic joint replacement procedures than any robotic surgeon in the region.
Mako total hip surgery is appropriate for people suffering with severe hip pain or stiffness resulting from degenerative joint disease, including but not limited to osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, or avascular necrosis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can be a life-changing experience for individuals who have failed conservative treatment options such as physical therapy, oral medications, and steroid injections.

Treasure hunting in Eastern Shore antique shops is an adventure and pastime for Troy and Tracy Heuer, who purchased a home in Harbeson, DE, and summered there for a few years before deciding to rebuild. Inspired by the old — church doors, leaded glass, unlacquered brass — and in pursuit of new, they decided to start from the ground up.
The vision: coastal but not kitschy; clean lined but not sterile. Frequenting their favorite old-timey spots like Harleysville’s Hartland Demolition & Restoration, they would unearth finds and entrust in their friend Tom O’Connor, a refinisher, to bring pieces back to life to use as raw materials for structures like the bar island or accents like transom windows in the home’s various doorways.
With plans from architect Gregory Hastings of Hastings Associates in Ocean View and in partnership with Jim Parker Builders Inc., in Millsboro, the Heuers dug into a project that would serve as a family hub where their three children, in their twenties, could visit, bring friends and entertain.
“It’s all centered on family, trying to keep us all together,” Tracy Heuer says. “We can meet just for fun and get out on the water — our boat is docked out back, and that is one of the reasons we picked out this property, to have access to Rehoboth Bay.”
A Statement Entry. While staying at a hotel in upstate New York, Heuer spotted a lantern fixture in the foyer and wanted one of her own. The proprietor tipped her off to the source. “When Paris took its gas street lamps down to replace them, many landed in antique dealers,” she says. Like any resourceful archaeophile, Heuer tracked one down in London and had it shipped to Delaware. “The chain it hangs from my father-in-law took off a tractor.”

PARISIAN TREASURE

Storied Pieces. Reclaimed windows and doors were sourced before the framing took shape — a necessity, given casings had to be built around the antiques, ParkerHazel explains. “When you have doors and windows like this, we have to frame around those and be sure we have the required height and width,” she says.
Reclaimed church doors that open from the open kitchen and dining space into a bar area were rehabbed with rain glass windows. A leaded-glass transom window placed atop an open, clean-lined doorway adds a touch of class. “It’s really hard to find those antique windows without a lot of cracks,” Parker-Hazel points out.

Kitchen Character. An open, spacious kitchen for cooking and gathering was a priority for this new build. Cabinetry by Merillat offers extensive storage, and gold hardware provides a pop and complements the unlacquered brass pot filler and light fixtures. “Over time, it will develop a patina,” says Kinsley ParkerHazel, sales and marketing manager at Jim Parker Builders. The initial pot-filler they chose was sold out, but she sourced one on Etsy, along with a faucet for the bar sink.
Marble is generally reserved for surfaces that will be gently used, but Heuer knew she wanted this natural stone for the kitchen, wet bar and master suite. “I’m a big New York City lover, and whenever I visit my daughter there and we go into an old restaurant or bar, they always have marble,” she relates, adding that she has admired it in European architecture, as well. “It’s something I’ve always loved.”
While marble has a tendency to etch and stain, much like the antique features incorporated into the home, these marks add to the character and tell a story. For instance, the pantry doors, reclaimed from an old church, are hung barndoor-style but retain the original handle pull plates intact as a nod to their history.
Stepping Out. A wall of sleek, blackframed sliding glass doors opens to the screened-in outdoor living space, where the interior aesthetic and finishes carry through seamlessly. For instance, the ceiling is white shiplap, the fireplace wall is painted brick, and wide-plank wood flooring complements the 9-inch luxury vinyl indoors, a practical low-maintenance selection.
“We added a stainless-steel surround to the fireplace as an extra heat barrier to protect the T.V.,” Parker-Hazel explains of a source that adds warmth to the space during cooler seasons.
Shades of White. The accents walls of the home are, in fact, windows with unobstructed views of the river. Selecting a neutral palette makes way for the water’s moody blues and greens. ParkerHazel selected Sherwin Williams Alabaster

for all painted walls, discreetly incorporating shiplap for texture in the foyer and master suite, and on the fireplace.
“At first, we were shiplapping every ceiling, and then we reconsidered,” Parker-Hazel says, relating that overdoing this finish would distract from the views.
Meanwhile, painting the millwork in trim white offers a subtle contrast to walls — almost unnoticeable while delivering depth and dimension to flat surfaces.
Capitalizing on generous 10-foot first-floor ceilings as a way to open up more of the lower level to the outdoors, Parker Builders installed 24 feet of double sliders that open to the patio and dock beyond it, topped with a trio of square-grille windows, all by Andersen.
There’s plenty of headroom upstairs, too, with 9-foot ceilings and a cathedral feature in the master that is consistent with the lower level’s main living space, creating a seamless aesthetic throughout the home.
Bunking In. There’s plenty of sleeping space for guests with five bedrooms, including the essential bunk area above the garage that was initially going to remain unfinished. After touring other area homes with Jim Parker Builders, Heuer had her eyes set on a bunk loft-style setup with true stairs. The two bottom beds are queen-sized with two twins on top. Nautical sconces for each sleeping space add a coastal flair, while wood railings stand out from white-washed walls.
“Seeing this project come together and problem-solving — it was all so rewarding,” Parker-Hazel says, appreciating intentional details like window seats for storage in the front bedrooms and some painted brick on the exterior. “They had a great vision and we had so much fun making that a reality.” CS

A COURAGEOUS AND NONCONFORMING VISION FOR WHAT A BEACH HOME COULD BE STEERED A JOURNEY TO BUILD THIS PASSION PROJECT

Photography by Svetlana Leahy
Reels of inspiration, years of conversation and percolating ideas, the what-ifs, the whynots. Bob and Alana Keeley would digest and dissect YouTube videos of West Vancouver homes tours, hashing over the details.
What if? Then on the last Sunday in January 2017, they stumbled upon a real estate listing and, over breakfast, decided it was a must-see. Except it was not in Canada or the West Coast, not even close. It didn’t matter.
Why not? “We discovered this land in a gated community in the Broadkill Beach area in Milton, DE, by the Prime Hook Wildlife Preserve and we looked at each other like, ‘This is amazing,’” Alana says, especially drawn to the privacy and seclusion yet proximity to historic Lewes and the heart of Rehoboth Beach.
The journey unfolded from there.
The Keeleys acquired the property, eventually enlisted in an architect, broke ground in April 2018 and embarked on another year-plus of unconventional construction. That doesn’t count the six months following when they conceded to living in some dust and moved in mid-completion.
The planning for this North Bay Shore Drive home was beyond a massive, ongoing brainstorming session. It became a sort of second occupation.
“We would work through the day and talk every night about the things we wanted,” Alana says. “We wanted every space to have a functional purpose.”
Alana was intently focused on the floorplan flow and its utility, while Bob’s nature to go against the architectural grain informed the design aesthetic. “I personally don’t like the ‘typical home,’” he says. “I don’t like that everyone trims their house in white. I wanted a house that was concrete.”

Bob drew from the Spanish GilBartolome Architects’ infamous The House on the Cliff with views of the Mediterranean Sea — a modern logistical odyssey revered for its engineering prowess, sustainability and daring design. The place is ironclad.
The house that the Keeleys built ended up the same, with wall R-values rated at 46 while the U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-13 to R-23 as a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat from entering or escaping.
“I was very focused on the contemporary style,” Bob adds.
Both wanted windows — lots of them, so existing in the space would have a sort of Imax surround-view experience.
“We never even put art on the walls,” Alana says, a testament to the greater outdoors.
“The windows bring in the beauty of the outdoors, the bay, the ocean,” she says. “We can see the ferry go from Cape May to Lewes and behind us is the wildlife preserve.”
During the process, every detail was considered.
“It was more than building a home; the process was an emotional journey,” says Rob Arlett, broker and owner, Beach Bound Realty.
The way they speak of the house says it all.
“This home is truly one of a kind — there is no other like it in this region,” Arlett says pointing to its modern aesthetic, thoughtful use of materials, and the dramatic panoramic view of woods and water.

TRUE RETREAT
The property includes one mile of secluded, deeded private beach available only to owners and their guests.
A Coastal Sanctuary. Rather than beach bustle, the Keeleys were after a more off-road location and found it on this Milton property. The private community includes one mile of secluded, deeded private beach available only to owners and their guests.
This is unlike other private beach access properties that lack any real means of keeping out the public, Arlett says. “It’s a true retreat.”
Across the water is the protected National Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge, globally renowned for nature photography and birding, where country roads cut through marshes and hiking trails wind through the migratory sanctuary.
To the Keeleys, this also meant they wouldn’t wake up one morning to views of land clearing and tourist development, another nod to peace and quiet. And the couple saw this as an opportunity to gather family and friends to relax, and simply enjoy the natural playground that unfolds from every angle.
Great Room Views. The Goliath ceiling peaks at a smidge over 26 feet and slopes to its lowest point at 20 feet, 7 inches over a waterfall of windows revealing the serene surroundings that beckoned the couple to construct a dream house they never planned on building. Rough-cut exposed trusses in a slate gray say industrial. The Restoration Hardware Cloud sectional says comfort.
It’s a healthy yin-yang, his-hers balance that resulted in a home with uncommon form and function.
Alana says, “I love the contemporary style for the windows and finishes but very cozy furniture.”
As for the windows, hurricane-proof coastal windows are practically costprohibitive even for an all-in affair like this. “We did the math and if you get smaller windows and put seams between them, they are just as strong,” Bob says.
Throughout the lower levels, largeformat Italian stone tile in Anthracite Matte offers a sleek-user friendly finish. Upstairs, the couple selected a Coretec product in Mont Blanc Driftwood, a lighter take.
Suite Views. Two masters, one for guests, and the other the primary, are intentionally situated to capture the sunrise in one, the sunset in the other. Floor-to-ceiling triple-pane glass sliding doors open up to a balcony with ocean and wildlife preserve views. The sun comes up in the secondary master, again with a wall of glass that ushers the outdoors in. Sundown happens in the primary suite. The home includes a third bedroom and a bunk room — a necessity, Alana says. In keeping with their mission: “Every room has a functional purpose,” she says.
72 CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2024
There Are No Rules. Alana says, “I never imagined we’d have a house like this, I never could have dreamed this up.”
But between the couple, an awardwinning Washington D.C. architect on the docket for initial stages, craftsman labor on the job, and champions including Arlett supporting the process, they did in fact dream this up — and do it.
“It gives you confidence in what you can do,” she says. “It takes a lot of patience, effort, thinking and research, but it was so cool and gratifying to be part of a creative project.”
Bob digs to the root of the project’s success. Decades ago, while running a clothing manufacturing business, a mentor who produced garments for Ralph Lauren and helped him get started left for another opportunity. “I said, ‘I don’t feel like I learned a whole lot,’ and he told me, ‘You learned everything. You learned there are no rules.’ I lived my life off that one guy’s statement. Don’t think everything has to be a certain way. Make it what you want it to be.”
What they wanted was a West Vancouver home on the East Coast.
“We started out with no rules,” Bob says, “Figured out what we liked and what the space should look like and put the puzzle together.”
Ultimately, a life shift prompted the couple to list — and as their Realtor and friend Arlett describes, “Their passion is now going to be shared with someone else in a property that embodies what it represents to be beach-bound.”
Or in Alana’s words, “We are proud of it. It was blood sweat and tears, and it was a beautiful place to experience. But Bob and I do not get stuck.”
And so, the journey with no exact rules continues to the next stop, another journey to explore. CS

FLAVORS coastal Bar Mumbo Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned
Pressed to choose a favorite, Mitchell marinates — and since guests share different tastes, he offers some suggestions if you’re new to Bar Mumbo.
Sip. Tip a glass for the Filthy AF Martini with olive brine, blue cheese stuffed olives and either Grey Goose vodka or Hendricks gin. People are asking for a Paper Plane with bourbon, amaro, Aperol and fresh lemon juice. Chef Mitchell will take a Mezcal Negroni with its namesake combined with Campari and sweet vermouth.
Start. Pretzel rolls, along with everything else, are homemade from scratch in the Bar Mumbo kitchen. Kick off a meal with Chesapeake crab dip. Or salad your way to dinner — or as a stand-alone — with a beat & arugula salad or classic Caesar salad with oldfashioned craftsmanship. Mayonnaise is made in-house for the chef-crafted dressing.
Savor. Carnivores delight in the 10-hour braised pot roast that is plated with roasted Yukon gold potatoes, braised vegetables, horseradish cream and tobacco onions. A chef’s fave: Steak & frites with herb butter fries, bearnaise and jus. Seafoodies find comfort in the classic Maryland crab cake dinner — make it a single or a double — paired with mashers, green beans and carrots, or the hoisin glazed salmon served with shrimp potstickers, vegetable fried rice and butter-poached Bok choy.
Sin. Why not? You can’t go wrong with cranberry ginger bundt cake, a coffee-flavored Italian tiramisu or seasonal crème brûlée selections.

Wylder Pot Roast with Tobacco Onions
Photos by Jill Jasuta
Ingredients:
For the Braise:
2 oz sunflower oil
2 lbs Chuck Roast
2 large yellow onions
3 carrots
1 head of celery
1 lb peeled garlic cloves
4.4 oz tomato paste
1 bottle Cabernet Sauvignon
1 qt veal stock
1 bunch of thyme
1 bunch rosemary
3 bay leaves
15 whole black peppercorns
1 anise star
Sea salt
For the Vegetables
Handful of French green beans, blanched
Baby carrots, peeled and blanched
Fingerling potatoes, boiled and smashed slightly
Garlic herb butter
For the Tobacco Onions
One onion, finely shaved
Buttermilk and Royal Oak
Smoke hot sauce
Chicken breader
For the Tiger Sauce
1 cup sour cream
½ cup horseradish, prepared
¼ cup cracked black pepper
1 Tbsp sea salt
Procedure:
For the Braise. Peel and rough chop the braising vegetables. Preheat the oven to 350°. Heat a large cast iron skillet or braising dish and add the sunflower oil. Season and sear the chuck roast for about 2-3 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Remove the meat and sear the vegetables and garlic until lightly browned, one at a time to avoid crowding, and remove from the pan. Add the tomato paste and stir for one minute. Deglaze the pan with the bottle of red wine and reduce by half. Add the vegetables, meat, veal stock and remaining spices and herbs. Bring to a simmer on the stove, and then move to the oven for 8-10 hours until the meat is tender. When the braise is finished, remove the meat carefully, strain the liquid and reduce by half. Season the jus to taste. Allow the meat to cool before portioning.
For the Vegetables. Heat the blanched vegetables in garlic herb butter, and sear the slightly smashed potatoes in sunflower oil until golden brown on each side.
For the Tobacco Onions. Soak the shaved onions in buttermilk and hot sauce. Drain well and bread with chicken breader. Be sure to coat each onion piece carefully or they will clump together when fried. Fry in hot oil in an iron skillet or in a deep fryer.
To Assemble. Place the crispy potatoes in the bowl, then the green beans and carrots. Lay the braised meat across the green beans and finish with the reduced jus. Top with the tobacco onions and serve with the tiger sauce on the side.

Tiramisu Procedure:
For the Sponge Cake. Preheat the oven to 350º. Grease two loaf pans with a little butter and dust with cocoa powder. Whip the egg whites and cream of tartar to stiff peaks. Add 1/3 of the sugar and beat again until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip together the egg yolks, remaining sugar, baking powder and honey. Add the vegetable oil and salt and beat until fluffy. Fold the all-purpose flour into egg yolk mixture, then gently fold the stiff egg whites into the yolk mixture. Separate into the two loaf pans and bake for 20-30 minutes, until light golden on the edges and hot in the center.
For the Cream. Bring a pot of water to a boil for a double boiler. Whisk together the egg yolks and granulated sugar until fluffy and cook over the boiling water until the mixture has thickened slightly and the whisk leaves one second trails. Add the milk and continue to stir and cook until the milk steams for 2 minutes. Scrape the edges often! This should result in a pale yellow fluffy, airy cream. Let this mixture cool completely. While cooling, whip the heavy cream, vanilla and confectioners sugar until it forms stiff peaks. In a second bowl, whip together the cooled egg yolk mixture and the room temperature mascarpone. Then fold in the whipped cream.
Assembly. Cut the cooled cakes into 1-inch slices. Dip the slices into the chocolate-espresso-liquor syrup. Make sure they are fully soaked. One at a time, make a flat layer on the bottom of a cake pan. Top with a thick layer of the cream. Repeat until you have formed your layers and run out of cake. Allow to rest in the fridge for at least one hour. Even better the next day! Dust with cocoa powder, scoop and enjoy! CS

Instructions
Step 1
Put the soaked, drained beans in a 5- to 8-quart slow cooker, and season them generously with salt and pepper. Add the reserved Parmesan rinds and the wheat berries.
Step 2
Warm the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, season generously with salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the fennel. Continue to cook, stirring often, until the fennel is softened, and the onion is lightly browned, about 5 more minutes. Add the celery and garlic, and cook, stirring, until just softened, about 1 minute. Add the fennel seeds and red pepper, and cook, stirring constantly, until combined and fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the rosemary and the wine and let the wine bubble until the pan is almost dry, about 2 minutes.
Step 3
Scrape the mixture from the skillet into the slow cooker. Add the stock, and season it: Add ½ tsp of salt, if you are using low-sodium broth, or 1 tsp of salt, if using homemade unsalted stock. (Do not add salt now if you are using fully salted broth.) Stir to combine, and cook on low until the wheat berries are tender and the beans are creamy, about 8 to 10 hours.
Step 4
Before serving, remove and discard the rosemary sprigs. Stir in the parsley, lemon juice (a quarter of a lemon at a time, then taste), and reserved fennel fronds. Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary. Serve in bowls topped generously with grated Parmesan.

Roasted Cauliflower and Toasted Almond Soup
Instructions
Step 1
Soup is a humble yet extraordinary culinary creation that warms the heart.
Ingredients
1 large head cauliflower (about 2 pounds), stem discarded, florets cut into 2-inch pieces, leaves reserved (if available)
2 medium white onions, halved and thinly sliced
2 cups chicken broth
3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2½ tsp ground cumin
2½ tsp ground coriander
2 Tbsp salted butter
4 garlic cloves, crushed
1 large sweet potato (about 14 oz), skin on, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 tsp ground turmeric
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Pinch of garam masala
2 Tbsp sliced almonds
Coarsely chopped fresh parsley leaves, for serving
Sea salt and ground black pepper
Heat the oven to 400°. In a mixing bowl, add chopped cauliflower, any cauliflower leaves and onions. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle in cumin, coriander, cayenne, 2 tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper. Use your hands to mix everything together, then arrange in an even layer on a baking sheet. Roast in the oven until the cauliflower is browned and cooked through but still has some bite, about 25 minutes.
Step 2
Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Stir in the potato and turmeric, add the stock and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes until the potato is soft.
Step 3
When the cauliflower is done, reserve about 1 cup cauliflower for the topping (including leaves, if you have them) and add the remaining cauliflower and onions to the soup. Return the soup to a simmer and cook until flavors meld, about 5 minutes. Blitz with an immersion blender until smooth. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
Step 4
Toast the almonds in a dry skillet over low heat with garam masala and a few dashes of salt, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 4 minutes. When you are ready to serve, ladle the soup into warmed bowls. Top with the reserved roasted cauliflower and a scattering of almonds and parsley.

In a large pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the ginger, shallots, and garlic and cook until soft and just starting to brown, about 4 minutes. Add the carrots and curry paste and stir well. Cook for 2 more minutes.
Pour in the stock, coconut milk, and fish sauce and season with a generous pinch of salt. Bring the soup to boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the carrots are soft. Add the lime zest and juice.
Carefully transfer to a blender and blend until smooth. (You may need to do this in two batches.) Taste and adjust for salt and lime. Serve soup warm garnished with cilantro.

Chili Instructions
Step 1
Heat the beans on top of the stove in a large soup pot or Dutch oven.
Step 2
Heat the oil over medium heat in a heavy nonstick skillet and add the onion, carrot and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are tender and beginning to color, about 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic, stir together until fragrant, 30 seconds to a minute, and add the ground chili and cumin. Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes, until the mixture begins to stick to the pan. Add the tomatoes and oregano, and salt to taste. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring often, until the tomatoes have cooked down and the mixture is beginning to stick to the pan, about 10 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste dissolved in water and bring back to a simmer. Season with salt to taste and simmer, stirring often, for 10 minutes, until the mixture is thick and fragrant.
Step 3
Stir the tomato mixture into the beans. Add the winter squash and bring to a simmer. Simmer, stirring often, for 30-45 minutes. It is important to stir often so that the chili doesn’t settle and stick to the bottom of the pot. It should be thick; if you desire you can thin out with water. Taste and adjust salt.
Step 4
Shortly before serving stir in the cilantro and simmer for 5 minutes. Spoon into bowls and top with grated cheddar cheese and scallions if desired.

1 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 medium carrots, shredded
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
¾ cup dry white wine
4 cups chicken broth
2 cups ditalini
1 8½ oz jar julienned oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
Instructions
Step 1
1½ cups half-and-half ½ cup Parmesan, finely grated, plus more for serving
2 cups rotisserie chicken, chopped 2 cups packed chopped Tuscan kale 1/3 cup packed fresh basil leaves, finely chopped Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
In a large Dutch oven or heavy pot over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add onion, celery, and carrots, season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until starting to soften, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add wine and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until wine is reduced by half, about 2 minutes. Add broth, ditalini, 1½ teaspoons salt and 3 cups water. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Step 3
Stir half-and-half and Parmesan into soup. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a simmer. Add chicken and kale and cook, stirring occasionally, until chicken is heated through, and kale is wilted, about 2 minutes. Stir in basil, season with salt and pepper.
Step 4
Ladle soup into bowls. Top with tomatoes and more Parmesan.

Grapefruit Citrus Sparkling Mocktail
Ingredients
4 oz grapefruit juice
6 oz Sprite (substitutes: 7 Up, club soda or flavored sparkling water)
Wedge of fresh lime
Wedge of fresh lemon
Splash of simple syrup (optional)
Rosemary or thyme and grapefruit wedge for garnish
Instructions
Start by adding grapefruit juice into the glass. Squeeze in the juices from the lemon and lime wedges. Top off with Sprite (or your preferred substitute), stir to combine and add a few ice cubes. Taste to see if you want to add a dash of simple syrup.
If you are using grapefruit juice from the store and don’t like drinks too sweet, you may not need the simple syrup, but if you use a fresh grapefruit, it may be on the sour side where an extra dash of sugar would be helpful. Add the garnish and serve!
