The indelible power of one’s self-esteem and its connection to a beautiful smile cannot be overestimated. Onetime competitive gymnast and current high school senior Kassi Swift knows this all too well.

“Before I was a patient at Tilghman Orthodontics, I hated my smile,” Kassi recalled.

“My top two front teeth had a huge gap between them. I didn’t smile much, since I didn’t like how I looked.”

At age 15, Kassi received braces from Dr. Tilghman to begin the teeth-straightening process. Throughout her treatment, Kassi felt completely at ease and saw firsthand how personalized each patient’s experience is.

“The quality of care at Tilghman Orthodontics is out of this world,” Kassi said. “Everyone cares so much about their job and for every single client. I was most impressed by how different each patient’s treatment is. They really customize each person’s care to fit them the best.”

Once treatment was completed, Kassi’s braces were removed — and her outlook on life changed then, too.

“After I had my braces taken off, I didn’t want to stop smiling. I wanted everyone to see my teeth and I’d never felt that way before,” she said. “The number of compliments I get about my smile and teeth make me feel beautiful, confident and proud. What I didn’t realize was how much just liking your smile can change you on the inside.

In general, I’m happier and more confident. I would give the same advice to any high school student: It’s not too late to correct your smile, and doing so really can change your life!”

GROWING GRATITUDE, ONE LEAF AT A TIME

Despite overwhelming challenges faced over the past two years, the people of #TeamBeebe remain dedicated to providing excellent care to Sussex County every day. During it all, our team has received notes of support and thanks. These small acts of kindness brighten their days and serve as powerful reminders of their value to a grateful community. To help our neighbors join in sharing their appreciation, we’ve created a virtual Gratitude Tree. By simply adding a “leaf”—a short note of gratitude—you can help us grow our tree, lift the spirits of our heroes, and enrich a legacy of caring that has endured for more than a century.

“I am extremely grateful for the work the team does. You are not unnoticed.” —RV

“Thank you for taking such good care of my husband in the emergency room.” —JC

From Humble BeginningsD to This Milestone W

hen we started this idea to produce a lifestyle magazine about the Eastern Shore, we could have never dreamt of this moment — the publication of our 100th issue. From a small, spare bedroom in our West Ocean City townhouse, Links and Living was born in March 2004. The first issue, 32 pages in all, was one-half golf and one-half lifestyle content and generated enough revenue to pay for its printing and those who helped us produce it. That was good enough for us to pursue a dream.

While Erin and I worked day jobs, and with the faithful support of trusting business owners like Betty Bush of Panache and Carol Ann Suttka of Interiors by Carol, we published two more issues that year, summer and fall editions. Links and Living’s Spring 2005 issue attracted two calls for franchise requests from the Baltimore and Hamptons Roads regions, but Erin knew it wasn’t truly taking hold here and that we needed to change the name and direction of the magazine. Begrudgingly, I relented, and in a notebook that we still have today, we began jotting names of concepts that might ultimately work to connect our vision with local readership. When we combined Coastal and Style, words we’d used in different title ideas, we both put our pencils down.

Coastal Style debuted in the summer of 2005, and so began our journey to today — and in this moment, one word comes to mind above all others: gratitude. We’re incredibly thankful to have worked with so many talented professionals over the years, humbled by the support of businesses across the Shore and honored to have connected so strongly with our loyal readers. That, above all else, has been our goal all along. CS

On the beach and on the water, gulls are a common sight. However, unlike birds common to backyards, we seldom see a gull nest, their nesting habits or baby gulls for that matter. For that experience, we need to visit the remote wetlands and bay islands, far from regular human contact. These very young gulls, still weeks away from being able to fly, are enjoying early- morning sun in a marsh while waiting for a parent to bring them breakfast.

ARTIST AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNER JAN KIRSH INHERENTLY KNOWS THE PROCESS TO SCULPTING EDEN-LIKE GARDENS FOR HER CLIENTS

28 CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2022 local

Healthy things grow but need a watchful eye and experienced touch to be tamed. Creating a garden is a labor of love and purpose that requires collaboration, planning and patience. For Jan Kirsh, a landscape designer and artist whose work reflects both order and whimsy, knowing when to act and when to wait is simply part of the process.

For Kirsh, understanding her clients is paramount. She considers the collaborative element an important part of the garden. She and clients are a team working together toward a common goal, so she educates them about what they should expect and when they should expect it. Gardens can be surprising, with plants that add exciting and wild punctuation to the area, and she has become known for the sense of surprise that she brings to her designs. After years of experience, she understands the rhythms of plants’ growing, bearing fruit and maturing. How the landscape will develop in the future is as clear to Kirsh as a newly sculpted garden, perhaps more so.

It may be her unique way of planning landscape designs that has kept her client list long. She has worked with some clients for 20 years. She studies a landscape from a client’s perspective. Where do they like to sit when they are outside? She sits there. How do they walk through their yard or garden? She walks where they walk. She stands at the kitchen sink or at the bedroom window to glimpse what they see, considering small but salient factors before she begins designing. This eye for detail and the consideration she gives to each client’s home and property are why she has had some clients for decades. The garden landscape is simply an extension of their home.

Kirsh calls the gardens she has designed a living portfolio. That is precisely what they are — growing, transient views, as different in the summer and winter as the sun and snow. She paints with plants and has the benefit of watching her paintings change with the seasons.

PATHS TO PARADISE By walking in the shoes of her clients, Kirsh better understands how to best design each space.

ORDERLY ENJOYMENT Kirsh is adept at creating luxuriant, gentle gardens that cunningly blend form and fun.

With unique flair, she also helps her clients develop useful areas that fit within the natural environment. When a client wanted a solution to divide a small patio within the confines of the garden that reflected the home’s architecture, Kirsh designed a unique way of loosely separating the space. Her “Mid-Century Modern Screen” is a Corten steel partition standing four feet high. The creation reflects both the design of the home and the garden landscape with a sense of stylish amusement.

The luxuriant, gentle gardens, with their blend of order and fun (trademarks of her work) are not created by accident. Kirsh is meticulous in her research, planning and execution. She is also patient. And patience is needed by both Kirsh and her clients as they await with enthusiasm the changing landscape that each season brings, knowing that each year will show another glimpse of their plans. CS

KERRY STEWART’S PASSION FOR HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCTS BLOSSOMED INTO HER OWN BUSINESS AT TALL OAK TRADING COMPANY

Before Kerry Stewart began making her own soaps, she would collect them from other local artisans.

“Everywhere I visited, I would search for artisanal soaps and bring them home. I have a collection,” said Stewart, co-owner of Tall Oak Trading Company, based in the Lewes-Millsboro area.

Stewart’s enthusiasm for handmade suds blossomed in 2017, when she drove to Virginia to take a workshop led by Carole Kindel of Old Dominion Soap Company. She was hooked from the first day.

“I recognized her from two years earlier because I bought some of her soap at a market and I knew she was the real deal,” Stewart said.

Since then, making soap has become a venture that relies on herbs harvested from her garden. Calendula, chamomile, parsley, spearmint and sage are used to color the soaps, and beeswax when available, to use in her products. Stewart’s artisanal soaps are scented only by essential oils and are colored with homemade botanical infusions or earth-based clays.

“All my products are plant-based, organic when possible and made with natural essential oils,” she said.

As Tall Oak Trading Company grew, she created a line of soaps to sell next to the cutting boards her husband, Gary Stewart, was selling.

Kerry Stewart takes great pride in creating her organic, plantbased beauty products.

Besides being a wood craftsman, Gary made everything in his wife’s Little Studio in the Woods: a former shed that housed a 1948 tractor, converted into an elegant and rustic workspace thanks to his skills with reclaimed wood and repurposing architectural details. It’s not only a studio for crafting Kerry’s artisanal delights, but also includes a small office, yoga sanctuary sitting area and a sleeping loft. Gary handcrafted the soap molds, seasoning rack and the soap saver for your sink.

Kerry also makes other body care products: mineral bath salts with a base of Dead Sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, sea salt and Epsom salt combined with scents such as Douglas fir, eucalyptus, rosemary and lemon or lavender, blood orange, geranium and sweet marjoram; a lavender sage lotion stick; Calendula chamomile salve; rose or vanilla and cardamom lip balm; cardamom orange body butter; lavender with citrus hand lotion; grapefruit and tea tree deodorant; and beard oil in five scents.

CLEAN SCENE Freshly made guest soaps cure on a drying rack, just a sampling of the body care products Kerry Stewart makes by hand.

“Subtle scents that are personal and don’t linger are my key,” Kerry said. “You can use it in a yoga studio and not offend anyone.” She starts with basic combinations and modifies it for eclectic blends, making micro batches of only 18-20 items at a time.

It takes time to make a bar of soap. Once the base is made, it has to cool for 24 hours before adding scents. “I make a batch of 18 bars of three scents a day, it cools overnight and then it has four to six weeks of curing before wrapping and selling.” She currently creates 15 scents of soap, and a line of body sprays is in development.

The packaging is designed by her nephew and is recyclable or compostable. The lavender and sage lotion stick is the only product in plastic because it is

meant to be used in the shower. “I am an avid environmentalist, so everything is in cardboard, metal or glass, which can be composted or recycled,” Kerry said.

“I love naming my products, and when I do, the French teacher in me comes out. My honey is named Fleurs des Bois and is French for “woodland flowers.” I also make wildflower honey caramels, which are very popular,” Kerry said.

She supplies a few Airbnb rentals with her products, which can also be found at the Inland Bays Garden Center for the Arts in the Garden and Craft Fair, the Rehoboth Beach Holiday Farmers Market and Dewey Sip and Shop.

SAMI MANCINI HAS MASTERED THE ART OF WATERCOLOR. ONCE A HOBBY, THE POPULARITY OF HER WORK SOARED ON SOCIAL MEDIA, LEADING TO A BUSINESS WITH BIG-NAME CLIENTS

In many projects — such as baking or gardening — adding a few extra drops of water does not typically have any impact on the final product. In watercolor art, however, even a minuscule change in the amount of water applied has the potential to completely transform a piece. This is why precision is a key skill needed to fully excel in this art form.

Over time, local artist Sami Mancini has mastered the art of watercolor. As a student at Worcester Preparatory School, she found herself spending almost every minute of spare time doodling and sketching in the school’s art room. She then went on to minor in fine arts at Salisbury University. While her collegiate studies fine-tuned her natural artistic abilities, it was a studyabroad experience in Spain — especially a visit to Pablo Picasso’s home — that she

credits with truly igniting her passion for painting. While she isn’t limited to just one art medium, Sami considers watercolors to be her specialty.

“I enjoy how you can control the colors and vibrancy of the piece with the amount of water, and my light and airy style is enhanced through my use of it. Watercolor is the perfect medium, it’s challenging, playful and has a mind of its own,” shared Sami.

After graduating, Sami resettled on the Shore and worked full-time as a real estate agent.

“Having been born and raised here, I know how special raising a family on the Shore will be. My husband, Chris, and I are both from this area, and we are so beyond fortunate to be able to call this place home. While we have seen the growth occur over the past years, it no doubt continues

to maintain its small-town feel, and locals continue to drive the success of businesses and community overall,” she expressed.

As Sami pursued her real estate career, she made sure to find time to devote to painting, and she sought out opportunities to combine these two passions whenever possible.

“I posted a photo on social media of a watercolor painting I did of my client’s new home as a closing gift. Other agents and family friends started to reach out to ask if I would paint watercolors for them,” she shared.

That initial social media post quickly evolved Sami’s hobby into a side business. Her most popular commissions are often home portraits, but she also creates patterned designs, pet paintings and other customized requests.

Now a mother of a 2-year-old son with another baby boy expected soon, Sami receives such an inflow of commissions that her calendar is often booked up two to three months in advance.

In addition to a slew of local clients, Sami has received commission requests from people across the country, and she has also had commercial businesses — including local businesses like Pack da Bowl and Barn 34 — reach out to her for licensing pieces and design opportunities. A significant milestone came in the spring of 2021, when La Croix — a leading, nationwide carbonated-water retailer — contacted Sami to let her know that not only were they admirers of her work; they were also interested in commissioning her to create several custom watercolors designs for their global “Fizz Factory” Christmas campaign.

REALITY CHECK When Morris Semiatin first landed on Iwo Jima in 1945, he thought it was just another training session.

IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 1944, AND BALTIMORE NATIVE MORRIS SEMIATIN had a rather important decision to make. As a young high-school graduate growing up in the midst of a war, he could choose either to enlist in the United States Marine Corps or be drafted to the United States Army. Semiatin, a mere 18 years old, settled on the former. He was then shipped off to Parris Island, SC, where he would attend boot camp and begin training for World War II.

“Boot camp was very tough,” admitted 95-year-old Semiatin, a longtime resident of Berlin. “You didn’t fool around. You didn’t talk back. Your superiors talked to you right in your face, nose to nose. I learned that you take orders, and you follow those orders. If you didn’t do your job right and got the men around you in trouble, you would end up with their fists on your face.”

That same year, Semiatin bounced between Marine Corps bases in South Carolina, California and Hawaii before finally stepping foot on the island of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. There, he stood alongside tens of thousands of fellow Marines, many of whom were wounded or killed during the 36-day-long Battle of Iwo Jima.

“When we first landed on Iwo Jima, I thought it was just another training session. I didn’t realize it was a real battle,” said Semiatin, who served in the 5th Marine Division. “But as we came ashore, we saw a whole row of stretchers carrying men who were wounded that day.”

Semiatin’s initial duty was to unload cargo ships containing guns, ammunition and assault vehicles. He also worked as a rocketeer, firing bazookas into enemy territory. Later, when he was ordered to join a fighting unit, he became wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart for his actions.

“It was nighttime,” recalled Semiatin. “Flare-gun shells were lighting up the sky. A Japanese soldier stood in front of us, only 25 feet away. He ran right at us and threw a hand grenade into our foxhole. The man on my right lost his legs and had to be carried out. My right leg had been wounded by shrapnel. I can still visualize the whole thing.”

Semiatin also witnessed the raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, one of the most iconic images to be captured during World War II. He even developed a friendship with the reporter behind the photograph, Joe Rosenthal, as well as one of the six flag-raisers, Ira Hamilton Hayes.

“I watched the men put up the first flag, but it was too small. They had to go out to a ship to get a larger flag. That’s the one you see in the picture,” said Semiatin. “When I saw the second flag go up, I thought, I’m not so scared anymore.”

The American flag means a great deal to many veterans, and Semiatin is no exception. “The American flag? It’s my life. It’s my country. I worked hard to defend it. My job was to keep my head down, do my duty and try to stay alive. If I kept my head up, I wouldn’t be sitting here today.”

Upon returning home to the United States, Semiatin went on to become a photographer and was often called to the White House to photograph an array of famous faces, some of which ranged from presidents and world leaders to film and sports stars.

“I spent a lot of time in the White House, even became buddies with Lyndon B. Johnson. I was taking a lot of pictures of him during an interview one day, and he said to me, ‘You’ve had enough pictures. Get out.’ So, I did,” shared Semiatin. “But a few days later, I went to an event, and Johnson was there. He saw me, came over, threw his arm around my shoulder and asked another photographer to take our picture together.” From that day forward, he took countless photos of President Johnson.

The World War II veteran met many noteworthy individuals between 1951 and 1985, including Muhammad Ali, John and Jackie Kennedy, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, Ronald Reagan and many others.

Now, as he looks back on his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, Semiatin grapples with his memories of war. At times, he wishes he could forget it all. Yet, he knows that his story is rare and an important one to tell. Lately, he is more than happy to share his personal account of World War II with any who are willing to lend an ear.

As a country and as a community, we must never forget that there are heroes who walk among us. Morris Semiatin is one such hero. CS

Legacy of Learning

AS WORCESTER PREPARATORY SCHOOL CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY, ITS MISSION TO PROMOTE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE THROUGH A COLLEGE PREPARATORY CURRICULUM AND FOSTER ALL-ROUND GROWTH OF ITS STUDENTS CARRIES ON TODAY

For over five decades, Worcester Preparatory School has been building a legacy rooted in academic excellence on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. In 1970, the founding members of the school’s Board of Trustees came together with a shared vision for a school that would value strong academics, whole-child education, character-building and a commitment to college preparation. Through this vision, they formulated a mission which carries on even today.

Here are a few highlights of the school’s many milestones:

In 1976, a manners curriculum was added to the second grade and continues to be instructed today. Second graders complete a special course on manners, kindness and social graces. The course concludes with the annual Manners Banquet, a formal dinner for second graders and their parents at a local restaurant. In a world that is becoming increasingly hurried and brusque, thoughtfulness and good manners remain a priority at Worcester Prep.

In 1999, the school’s name was changed from Worcester Country School to Worcester Preparatory School to better reflect the mission of college preparation.

In 2006, the school’s continued strong focus on academics and student success led to the establishment of The William E. Esham Jr. Chapter of The Cum Laude Society. This society is a national organization founded in 1906 to honor academic excellence in secondary schools, and to date, Worcester Prep is the only school on the Eastern Shore with an officially approved chapter.

Having been involved with the school since its inception, as a kindergartener to now sitting on the Board of Trustees, I’ve had a unique view of Worcester Prep through many lenses. I’m incredibly impressed by the growth and accomplishments of the school over the past 50 years, and I am truly proud to carry on the vision of its founding members. — Will Esham ‘83

Now celebrating 50 years, the school has grown from its humble beginnings as a 10-classroom, cinder-block schoolhouse to an institution of approximately 500 students from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. The curriculum across three divisions serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and is supported by more than 75 full-time faculty members.

As important as it is to maintain a rigorous academic program, the school is also committed to creating well-rounded students through social and emotional wellness. Students learn to balance school responsibilities with personal and extracurricular interests. Students learn that empathy, confidence and perseverance in the face of challenges are as important to success as mastering mathematics or drafting an essay. By managing academics and character development, students are building a foundation for future success.

Worcester Preparatory School continues to offer challenging core courses, along with diverse electives, all while keeping a strong focus on writing, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) and foreign language. The curriculum also preserves traditional instruction such as teaching cursive, Latin and public speaking.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Having started as a 10-classroom, cinder-block schoolhouse 50 years ago, Worcester Prep is today an institution of approximately 500 students from three states.

As innovation in technology has rapidly advanced, Worcester Prep has met the changes head on by meaningfully incorporating it at all levels. Students utilize iPads and Chromebooks during instruction and learn in classrooms equipped with interactive smartboards and programmable robotics. Students travel the world on virtual field trips allowing them to collaborate with students and teachers across the globe, traveling through time and space. All while helping students find a healthy balance between life and devices.

The arts continue to play a key role at Worcester Prep. Art, music and performance are incorporated into the curriculum beginning in pre-K and continue through senior year. Students are invited to explore their interests through a variety of visual and performingarts experiences throughout Middle and Upper School, including elective offerings in drama, photography and digital media. Encouraging a relationship with the arts fosters personal expression, self-discipline and creativity.

As a sophomore at Furman University, I’ve found time and again that Worcester Prep prepared me extremely well, not only to meet the academic demands of college but also to manage my time, workload and interests. The performing-arts program at WPS instilled in me a love of the stage and gave me the confidence to audition for, and ultimately join, Furman’s a cappella group. – Devin Wallace ‘20

Through the years, the school has embraced innovation within curriculum, added extensive technology and expanded campus infrastructure over 20 times, all while remaining true to the mission that started it all. CS

Worcester Prep offers multiple scholarship opportunities, including the Sara Chase Carlson (SCCS) and Worcester Prep Trustee Scholarships. The SCCS is a 4-year full scholarship for a new student entering 9th grade who demonstrates a commitment to the arts or technology. Worcester Prep Trustee Scholarships are partial scholarships open to new students entering grades 6 to 11. For more information about scholarship opportunities or admissions, please contact admissions@ worcesterprep.org or call 410-641-3575.

FORWARD-THINKING Despite adhering steadfastly to its classical model of education, Worcester Prep is also a leader in student athletics and advanced technology instruction.

‘There’s no place I’d rather be’

For Matt Smart, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, coming to work is never a chore.

“I always feel supported, and I’m always excited to come to work,” he said.

Smart accepted his position with TidalHealth at the height of the pandemic, and he said there’s no place he’d rather be.

“The teamwork that we have here is amazing. We all really enjoy working together,” he said. “Sometimes people come here and they’re really sick and they require a lot of resources. It’s all hands on deck all the time, and everyone is always on point.”

As a new nurse, Smart said he has been appreciative of the TidalHealth team members who took time to pass on knowledge and make sure he was properly trained.

“I was lucky enough to have a preceptor who had been here for quite some time and she was exactly what I needed,” he said. “Because of her, I am well-rounded and excited to grow my career here at TidalHealth.”

“Whether you’ve been here for years, or just a short amount of time, you feel like you belong,” he said. “I would recommend TidalHealth to anyone in the nursing field.”

New valve replacement offers alternative to open-heart surgery

TidalHealth performs life-saving procedure for those who are ‘out of options’

The mitral valve is one of four in the heart that help stop blood from flowing backward. When it doesn’t close tightly, preventing that backward flow, the heart cannot pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the body. That can cause fatigue, shortness of breath and heart failure.

When a mitral valve stops performing as it should, surgeons can replace it, but over time if the new valve becomes diseased and begins to malfunction, patients face another significant open-heart operation. For some, that second operation is too risky, leaving doctors with few options.

Until now.

Valve in Valve Trans-Catheter Mitral Valve Replacement (ViV TMVR) is a revolutionary new procedure being performed at the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury. It’s a minimally invasive option for those patients doctors feel are not good candidates for a second traditional mitral valve replacement by open surgery.

PROMOTIONAL SECTION 50 CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2022

“Our patient was out of options short of this procedure, which made being able to offer it a lifesaving solution,” said James Todd, MD, cardiovascular surgeon with TidalHealth Cardiovascular Surgery. “It’s remarkable to see the rapid improvement from where he was before the ViV TMVR procedure to where he is now in his recovery.”

With ViV TMVR technology, the structural heart team at TidalHealth places the new valve inside the damaged one without taking it out of the body. Once it reaches the heart, the new valve is positioned and opened inside the old one. The expansion pushes the thin flaps of tissue, known as leaflets, from the malfunctioning valve out of the way allowing the leaflets of the new valve to open and close properly, ensuring correct and sufficient blood flow.

How the mitral valve gets there is what makes this such a beneficial option for patients who qualify. A cardiac surgeon and an interventional cardiologist work together to deliver the valve through a vein in the groin. It’s threaded up into the heart without opening

the chest, eliminating the pain, discomfort and risk of a regular open-heart operation.

Nationwide, only about 600 ViV TMVR procedures are performed each year. This is a unique option locally.

“Being the first on Delmarva to perform this procedure shows the commitment of TidalHealth and the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute to bring innovative and the most up-to-date technology and treatment to our patients,” said Steven Hearne, MD, interventional cardiologist and Executive Medical Director of the TidalHealth Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute.

ViV TMVR is not recommended for everyone with mitral valve disease. Consultation with a cardiologist and cardiac surgeon can best determine a patient’s suitability for the procedure.

One little button saves lives

Bev Stoakley believes in the product she sells.

As the Lifeline Manager for TidalHealth, she makes sure patients have the necessary equipment to keep them safe in their homes upon discharge from the hospital.

Lifeline is a 24-hour personal emergency monitoring service provided to folks who are at risk for a fall or who have chronic conditions such as COPD, CHF, diabetes, osteoarthritis or other conditions that could cause a fall.

Lifeline is offered in all Eastern Shore counties of Maryland, Accomack County, Va., and Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware and Annapolis, Md. Lifeline equipment can also be shipped to other states via FedEx, and installations can be scheduled within 24 hours, excluding weekends.

“Our objective is to keep our subscribers safer in their own home environments and prevent them from having to be hospitalized,” Stoakley said. “Lifeline can make a significant difference between getting help right away or lying on the floor for hours, which could cause a very serious outcome.”

The monthly cost of Lifeline ranges from $29.95 to $58.95 and is not funded by Medicare or insurance. Hospital patients who may benefit from Lifeline can take advantage of the Care Sage 60-day free trial. Care Sage is a predictive analytics engine that helps identify patients who are at risk for Emergency Room transport, allowing clinicians to intervene before problems occur. At the

end of the 60 days, patients can choose to continue the service as private pay or return the equipment.

Stoakley has seen the benefits of Lifeline firsthand and encourages anyone who may be a fall risk to invest in the service.

“Lifeline saves lives every day,” she said, noting that Lifeline has a great reputation of providing exceptional customer service. “We have subscribers calling us daily thanking us.”

TidalHealth has offered Lifeline for more than 25 years and continues to be among the Top 1 percent of programs in the nation.

Let’s Hear It for Conor — EASTERSEALS AMBASSADOR

SALISBURY WILL HOST ITS FIRST EASTERSEALS WALK WITH ME EVENT THIS YEAR WITH A YOUNG AMBASSADOR WHO TAKES ON LIFE WITH AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

SHINING SPIRIT Conor Pellinger will be the first “ambassador” for the debut Salisbury Easterseals Walk With Me event in early September.

Conor Pellinger eyes up an obstacle course — his physical therapy exercises in disguise — and throws his hands up like a champ. He looks over at Kathy Mirsky, an Easterseals specialist, who nods in encouragement as the good-natured 8-year-old pauses dramatically. “All right, ladies and gentlemen! Let’s hear it for the

little man: Conor Pellinger!”

Then, he’s off! “It was just so exciting,” says Mirsky, a physical therapist who has watched Conor progress developmentally, working hard to mitigate and overcome the challenges he was born with, Down syndrome and hydrocephalus, a dangerous buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain that requires surgery to treat.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Right away, the Pellingers connected with Easterseals for speech, occupational and physical therapies. “Without their support, Tom and I would not have known where to begin,” said Donna Pellinger, Conor’s mom.

“There are so many connections with Easterseals, and that has made it really special. Having experts working together as a team has made a world of difference,” Tom said.

Conor will be the first “ambassador” for the debut Salisbury Easterseals Walk With Me event, the date still to be announced at press time. “Conor has a great view of what he can do and what he’d like to do,” said Mirsky, adding that he loves praise and encouraging others. Conor’s twin brother, Will, often attends therapy sessions with Tom or Donna.

“Easterseals has helped me to be stronger,” Conor said.

Will is proud of his brother. “I enjoy watching him progress and learn more,” he said. “I like how he has so much enthusiasm.”

With Conor serving as ambassador of the walk, Donna says he can share his story with the community and inspire others to grow and learn, no matter what hard work is required. “He can help people know how important Easterseals is.”

Easterseals is the country’s largest nonprofit healthcare organization, serving more than 1.3 million people and can respond to as many as one in four Americans living with disabilities. From infant to adulthood, Easterseals offers a full range of developmental and interventional services, along with employment opportunities and adult day services.

Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore, based in Chestertown, MD, has held annual walks/runs in Georgetown, DE, for several years, and bringing the event to Salisbury expands an understanding for the organization and all it does to help.

“It raises awareness for all the services and how much they can impact young lives,” Tom said. “And, they incorporate play into therapies, so even though he is working, it’s game-play and fun. He always looks forward to going.”

“I love going up the stairs and down the slide in the gym,” Conor chimed in. The Easterseals connection has been a resource and support for the Pellingers. Because of others they know who are involved, Conor has gotten involved in the Challenger Little League baseball team and Team 360, a branch of Athletes Serving Athletes that helps individuals who might not otherwise be able to compete in competitions like 5K and 10K races, and triathlons. Tom has served as a Team 360 “wing man” by pushing

joggers or towing rafts; Conor ran his first 5K in December 2021.

Conor is a shining example of how hard work, a positive attitude, supportive family and lots of “fans” can help this “little man” achieve his goals.

Conor summed it up simply: “I am grateful for their help.”

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

THE ATTORNEYS AT THE LAW OFFICES OF MURRAY, PHILLIPS & GAY POSSESS ALMOST SEVEN DECADES OF DIVERSE LAW PRACTICE AND STRIVE TO ACHIEVE THE BEST RESULTS FOR CLIENTS

WITH NEARLY 70 YEARS OF COMBINED EXPERIENCE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS, the attorneys of the Law Offices of Murray, Phillips & Gay in Georgetown, DE, not only provide real-world expertise in the areas of criminal defense/DUI, estate planning/ administration, family law and real estate, they collectively serve their clients under the mantra: “Real lawyers for real people.”

Family law attorney and partner Thomas Gay has been practicing for 31 years, while partner Ronald Phillips has 28 years of criminal law experience to his credit. They are joined by managing partner Julianne Murray,

who possesses 26 years of work in the legal field — the last 11 as a practicing attorney. Newly admitted Delaware Bar member Chelsea King is also licensed in Maryland and brings youthful energy to the firm.

Whether it’s helping people through an extraordinarily difficult time during a divorce or separation or those facing criminal charges to planning one’s estate or guiding clients through complex real estate transactions, each attorney provides personal, hands-on attention to each client.

“Because there is never a one-size-fitsall solution, we try to fashion results that are

best for the client and for their circumstance,” said Phillips. “We always hope to develop a relationship with our client so that we can understand them as individuals. Discussions are a two-way street, and we are always sensitive to our client’s feelings, but at the end of the day, we need to make practical, informed and reasonable decisions based on facts, not emotions, and the ideal client recognizes that.”

“Putting people who are in a stressful time in their lives at ease, that provides us with great satisfaction,” Murray said. “I became an attorney to help people. We all did.”

DEFENSE AND DUI ATTORNEY RICHARD

J. BRUECKNER knows full well that when his cellphone rings, the person on the other end is having a bad day. Oftentimes, he said, they are scared, embarrassed, humiliated and unsure what to do next. Their life has been suddenly turned upside down — and it’s his job to work to protect their freedom, job, family and future from the consequences of a criminal conviction.

“My ideal client is a good person who had one bad night or made a bad decision,” said Brueckner, whose offices are conveniently located in Ocean City and West OC. “I get the honor of guiding them through the next days, weeks and months of their life until their case is behind them. When a client comes through a case unscathed and returns to their life a better, stronger person, and I know that I got to help, there is no better feeling!”

A former Senior Assistant State’s Attorney for nearly a decade, Brueckner won over 80 jury trials and reached successful outcomes in thousands of other cases. During his career, has formed relationships with prosecutors, judges and courthouse personnel across the Eastern Shore. He offers over a decade of trial experience focusing on drunk driving offenses, drug charges and weapons offenses.

THE FENWICK ISLAND TRADITION CONTINUES FOR A FAMILY WHO REBUILT THEIR OCEANFRONT HOME AND CREATED AN AIRY, OPEN AND ACCOMMODATING DESTINATION WITH GREEK INSPIRATION

An Aegean, Oceanfront Legacy

Acoveted sign inscribed with “Villa Aegean” hangs in a reimagined Fenwick Island summer home, a family getaway since 1970, when a two-bedroom, two-bathroom getaway started a tradition of making oceanfront memories. Built on concrete pillars, the sturdy home weathered decades of living. The time had come to consider expansion.

“The home had been in our family for a long time, and with its oceanfront view and proximity to businesses and the places we had become familiar with over the years, we wanted to stay here and build a place that suits our tastes,” said the homeowner, whose wife prioritizes lots of light and glass to usher in the oceanfront views, high ceilings to capture the airy waterfront location, and open living areas to accommodate gatherings.

“We also wanted the house to have a wow factor when you walk into it,” she said, noting that the modern design captures a sand-and-sea palette — a nod to her husband’s Greek heritage.

Complex and detailed, the project spanned a couple of years and involved orchestrating a range of craftspeople and managing construction amid regulations. “We wanted to maximize the oceanfront and went through variances so that we could get the frontage and the square footage they wanted on the site,” said Christopher L. Pattey, senior associate, architect, Becker Morgan Group.

The new home on an age-old property now leverages views from all angles, offers dedicated sleeping quarters for guests and incorporates materials and finishes that are sophisticated yet approachable.

“We wanted to recreate a new family home where they can make new memories and still reminisce,” Pattey said.

Aegean Aesthetic. He tends toward traditional style; she leans modern. A compromise was to infuse the family’s Greek culture into the design in the hues — aquamarine and shades of water — and in features like the wood paneling, a brilliant-blue kitchen backsplash and artistic globe light pendants of sky- and sea-colored glass.

“We really engaged the view and brought the outside in with the sand dunes, grasses and water. It really makes for a cohesive feel,” Pattey said, adding that walnut floors and textures in upholstery and rugs warm up the contemporary design.

OPEN MINDED A primary focal point of Christopher Pattey’s design for the home was to ensure an open concept conveyed from the residence’s main living area to its outdoor patio and decks.

All Aboard. The family wanted space for their three growing children — and looking ahead, space for their future families. Not to mention, they do tend to entertain friends.

“We wanted as many bedrooms and small bathrooms as we could to accommodate friends and family as time goes on,” she said, calling some of the smaller rooms “cruise ship bedrooms” because they’re large enough to serve as a sleeping quarters. “In the summer, we’re making as much use of the outdoors as we can, so you just need a place to sleep at the end of the day.”

Seven bedrooms, five full bathrooms and two half-baths provide plenty of berth space for overnighters. Every room has deck access. “That way, if you want a quiet deck to enjoy the outdoors, you can do that,” he said.

Meanwhile, the spacious master bedroom is a favorite feature of hers. A generous arched window in the spa bath welcomes in views and natural light. With the flip of a switch, the windows go opaque to offer privacy.

Creating open living spaces allows for family time and entertaining — a spacious kitchen and main family room, kids’ TV room, exercise space and billiard room.

Mar/Apr 2022 • CoastalStyleMag.com 69
VIEW FINDER With its majestic oceanfront setting, a priority of the design was to incorporate opportunities for homeowners and guests to enjoy its stunning views in each space.

Ample Access. Taking a site-specific design approach, the home has a fulldeck surround — and a notable feature is its oceanfront balcony, complete with an infinity pool and comfortable seating. Capitalizing on the seaside views, Pattey incorporated nautical elements into exterior spaces, such as steel-cable railing.

“The ocean is the reason for the house, and it’s what you want to experience when you’re here,” the homeowner said, adding that his top-floor office with ocean and beach views is a special workspace. “It’s all about location, location, location. We captured ocean views from every window of the house, and we get some bay vistas, too,” Pattey added.

Built to Last. The first family home was constructed on concrete pillars, so the couple wanted to ensure their new house would sustain the tests of time and weather. They opted for post-tension concrete construction and impact-resistant windows. The entire structure and floor system is concrete, with concrete-infilled walls, Pattey explained, relating that “the sturdy house is built to withstand Mother Nature’s fury.” The couple expects to continue the family legacy at Fenwick Island for years to come. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

FROM THE LATEST TRENDS TO TIMELESS CLASSICS, THE WINDOW TREATMENT EXPERTS AT MADE IN THE SHADE EASTERN SHORE HAVE YOU COVERED

Joe Kendall knows trends about as well as anyone As a 30-plus-year veteran of the furniture business, he can spot a gimmick that isn’t going to last and a bona fide concept that has merit. The successful owner of Kendall Furniture in Selbyville, DE, has enhanced countless clients’ homes with beautiful window treatments over the years, providing them with greater aesthetics, temperature control and privacy. Joe recently detected a returning trend that he expects will be fashionable again for some time.

“One of the big trends that’s coming back is wallpaper and drapes, especially drapery panels,” he said. Drapery panels are a completely different animal in the industry. Customers were telling me they wanted drapery panels, and I knew that I didn’t have the expertise to handle them. You might say you need a doctorate in window fashions to understand their complexities.

“So, I began researching about 18 months ago, and I asked myself, Is there a company I could partner with that would show me the

ropes and help me become an expert?” Joe continued. “When I discovered Made in the Shade and had in-depth conversations with their leadership team, I soon realized that not only were they the ideal partner, but I would also receive my doctorate and three master’s degrees in drapery panels after my training ended.”

Joe is joined at Made in the Shade Eastern Shore by partners Jason Mozingo, a trainedand-certified window-treatment installer, and Colleen Lutz, who boasts more than 20 years of experience in the industry. She spearheads the drapery department. Their showroom, conveniently located inside Kendall Furniture on Route 113, features more than 25 windowtreatment options, including beautiful drapery panels that can accent any space. From blinds to shades, shutters to soft treatments, motorization solutions and more, the national buying power of Made in the Shade ensures the best selections at the very best prices. Coupled with the fact the Joe, Jason and Colleen are non-commissioned, and the incredible savings is passed on directly

to their clients.

The process starts with a complimentary, in-home consultation during which each and every homeowner question is answered, while Made in the Shade’s five-point value system for product quality, customization, service, warranty and price are reviewed in detail.

“No matter the product choice, our first goal is to make certain that each customer is completely comfortable and educated with their window covering choices,” Joe said. “Our measurement process, product knowledge, professional installation and pricing are second to none, and we ensure our customers’ complete satisfaction.”

Made in the Shade Eastern Shore isn’t just their name, either. Joe, Jason and Colleen proudly serve homeowners, property management companies and commercial businesses from Lewes to Chincoteague to St. Michaels and all points in between.

COLOR, Caribbean Style

The Caribbean Island of St. John set the tone and triggered inspiration for what evolved into a wholehouse remodel in Rehoboth Beach. And from there, a single pillow bearing the island’s map was a pivotal piece for selecting colors, patterns, textures, surfaces and accessories.

Playful yet sophisticated, whimsical yet grounded, the design is saturated in the smart use of color.

“There is psychology to color,” points out Lucille Cavan, principal and designer at ReIMAGINATION Design LLC, a firm she started five years ago after an executive career in financial services. After studying design, she followed her passion and opened the practice.

The homeowner’s goal was to infuse coastal colors throughout the home. “The owner loves fabrics, loves color and loves texture, so that made the project really fun,” Cavan says, relating how hues flow from room to room and are balanced with neutrals including ivory, gray and black. “Even the wood finish we selected for the table looked like sand,” she adds of the theme.

What follows are some ways Cavan carried out the Caribbean color scheme and how you can incorporate fresh shades into your home.

MASTER PLAN According to Cavan, the homeowner’s goal was to infuse coastal colors throughout the home. “The owner loves fabrics, loves color and loves texture, so that made the project really fun,” she said.

Start with one piece: For this home, that “one” was the pillow of a map — and a secondary inspo swatch was a new fabric introduction by Thibault Wallpaper & Fabric that Cavan incorporated as covers for two feature chairs. “The pattern went so nicely with the existing drapery, and we found pillows with piping that made such a difference,” she says. “It’s like putting jewelry on.” From there, the palette of pinks and greens developed, and selections were made for other materials.

HOME coastal
80 CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2022

Carry over the colors: Cavan generally prefers small-to-medium-size patterns and mixing up checks with speckles or floral, and so on. “If you have multiple colors, be sure to pull in those colors in another area,” she advises. “So, if you have an accent pillow or fabric for the chairs that has pink, green, gold and blue, incorporate those colors throughout the room in some other way. And, I find, if you have a pattern and are missing out on a color in the fabric, the color could be through a bead, trim or piping on pillows.”

Coordinating complementary ‘pops’: Mixing metals into the color palette can add glitz — or sophistication. For instance, three barstools that tuck under the countertop of Lucite with gold match the cabinet handles. Gold-fleck detail in the countertop plays off these features.

Ground the room: “You should have something black in every room to ground it,” Cavan says, adding that “every choice is intentional.” For instance, the black dining table and chair bases frame the floral seat covers.

Keep walls clean: “As much as I love color, if you have a colorful room, you don’t necessarily want to carry that over to your walls,” Cavan says. One of her top coolneutral color picks is Sherwin Williams’ Repose Gray. For those who anticipate changing out pillows, rugs and artwork frequently, selecting a neutral wall that plays with warm and cool tones can save a repainting job. One example: Sherwin Williams’ Agreeable Gray, with its warm taupegray feel.

Select colors that ‘feel good’: “Even though there are no hard-and-fast rules for color, one is to use colors that make you feel good,” Cavan says, relating that she always asks potential clients about color preferences. What makes you feel great, energized — just happy? Which colors tend to drag you down? “As we have all learned since 2020, your home should be a respite, your sanctuary,” Cavan says. “Colors that work for one person might not work for another. It’s not about the color trends; it’s about the person in their home and how they feel in it.” CS

FAMILY WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND MICHAEL AND CATHY CUMMINGS’ NEW DREAM HOME — JUST TWO DOORS DOWN FROM THEIR PREVIOUS HOME

HOME coastal 84 CoastalStyleMag.com • Mar/Apr 2022

For Michael and Cathy Cummings, family means everything. And what better way to celebrate family than to build a custom, coastal dream home where loved ones can gather to create new memories together.

Having grown up in Wilmington and spending much of his adulthood in Bethany Beach, Michael has always been fond of all that Delaware has to offer. Now, he and his wife are looking to share their love of the Shore with their children and grandchildren. According to the couple: “That’s what life is all about.”

As the founder and CEO of Miken Builders, Michael did not have to search far for a custom homebuilder. The Cummingses decided on a relatively convenient location for their new residence, as well, just two houses away from their existing home, in downtown Bethany Beach.

Before any work could begin, the couple were tasked with placing their home on the market. With the help of Seaside Home Staging and Design, the house was redecorated, repaired, repainted and sold in less than 10 days. Requesting additional assistance from the company’s owner, Kathleen Barnes, with their new residence was a no-brainer.

HOME SWEET HOME According to owner Michael Cummings, sharing their new home with children and grandchildren is what life is all about.

“Everybody has a vision. But pulling that vision together with colors, concept and design is the tricky part. That, for us, is where Kathleen came into play,” explained Michael.

The overall design was inspired by two distinct ideas: an ideal living space for future retirement and an environment suitable for roving grandchildren. Imagine a coastal farmhouse, if you will, located a short distance from the boardwalk and beach, where the adults can sit back and relax as the grandchildren wander and play. Through collaboration with Miken Builders, Seaside Staging Home and Design has turned this dream design into a reality.

The kitchen area is sleek and refined, and yet, upon closer inspection, its natural-wood kitchen island, stove hood with a driftwood band and engineered hardwood flooring emanate a delicate balance between a coastal and rustic feel. Additionally, the basket chandeliers in matte black were added by Barnes to complement the coastalfarmhouse look. A coffee bar with an intricate wall design — tile, laid in a herringbone pattern — adds a modern touch to the room. All in all, the kitchen area is considerably spacious, a layout that offers family members an excuse to gather here quite comfortably for any given occasion.

Leading upstairs is a board-and-batten staircase, and at the very top sits a custom wooden gate depicting four seashells. Designed to protect both babies and pets, the gate was specifically crafted to fit Michael and Cathy’s coastal theme. Heading back downstairs, family members and guests will come across the powder room. In it, hangs various pieces of rope decor — nautical finds, courtesy of Barnes and her team of interior designers.

The downstairs walls are purposely bare, save for the framed photographs of the Cummings family. One photo in particular sits in the living room, perched on a wooden mantelpiece, drawing the eye to the cozy, stone fireplace. The glass table in the center of the room is particularly memorable for Michael and Cathy. The couple adore nautical decor and believe the table’s unique driftwood base pulls everything together perfectly.

DESERT WATER AT LOLITA’S BISTRO –LAREDO, TX

Refreshingly light and subtly sweet, the Desert Water at Lolita’s Bistro is perfect for those who enjoy a “skinnier” margarita. Sotol, a native spirit of Mexico that can be herbaceous and almost grassy, lends itself well to the similar qualities found in aloe vera. Accented with interesting bitters, like that of the grapefruit, the final product is an earthly, sweet concoction that’s sure to hit all the right spots.

Ingredients:

3 oz aloe vera juice (unsweetened)

¼ oz lime juice

1 Tbsp sugar or agave syrup

1 oz Sotol

3 Tbsp coarse sea salt, for rim garnish

1-2 Tbsp chile piquin (fresh or dried), for rim garnish

Grapefruit bitters or grapefruit peel (white removed), for garnish

Lime peel (white removed), for garnish

Instructions:

Combine juices with the sugar or syrup and stir until completely dissolved. Wet half the rim of an Old Fashioned glass with a lime wedge and dip in the chile piquin salt mixture. Fill the glass with ice, pour in the juice and sugar mix, then add Sotol. Stir well and top with three dashes of grapefruit bitters. Garnish with a lime peel and enjoy!

Cover Worthy

We felt it was fitting to close this issue with two of our most iconic covers. For our July/August 2014 issue, we traveled to New York City to chronicle Matt Haley’s crowning achievement as James Beard’s Humanitarian of the Year. Matt died tragically in a motorcycle accident in India on August 19, while this issue, celebrating his life, was still on the street.

For our September/October 2015 issue, we flew to St. Augustine, FL, to have lunch with Bobby Baker, one of Ocean City’s most colorful and notorious characters. Oh, the stories he told us on that day.

Log on to our site to turn back the clock and read the cover stories of these two influential figures. CS
