Did you know that a recent study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency revealed that Americans spend an average of 87% of their day inside? This presents a critical issue, as our natural body clocks are set to the sun. By spending much of our time indoors, our circadian rhythms can be dramatically thrown off, which can result in poor sleep, irritable moods and a lack of productivity — for starters.
At Overture, we design home lighting systems that can automatically simulate natural light throughout the course of the day, with cooler, brighter colors keeping you focused during the day and warm, dimmer colors allowing you to relax comfortably in the evening.
Lighting control ranges from a simple, in-wall dimmer to a fully automated whole-house system with dimmer panels and low voltage in-wall keypads. Lighting zones can be easily programmed for automated “turn-on” and “turn-off” events and schedules. Automated lighting also includes fully controllable scenes, color temperatures and light-color variabilities. Lighting control can be accomplished from controllers in your home, as well as from your phone anywhere in the world.
Today’s lighting fixtures project a greater amount of light while consuming far less electricity than previous fixtures and bulbs. Modern light fixtures can produce thousands of different light colors as well, such as red, blue green or white, upon command. We routinely install and program systems that have interior lights come on at sunset for ambiance and illuminate hallways throughout the home.
Outdoor low-voltage lighting is a major feature to showcase your home and Overture carries several manufacturers of landscape lighting. Modern LED landscape lights can be dimmed as well and come in thousands of different fixtures and looks. Exterior lighting systems can be set to illuminate at sunset and cease at sunrise, all while maintaining exact times for each event throughout the year.
Lighting, both inside and outside of your home, is a crucial element in providing ambiance, security, convenience and energy savings — all while allowing you to lead a healthier lifestyle.
At Overture, we take great pride in designing and installing the appropriate system for our clients — while exceeding their expectations.

Kresen “Kre” Muir knows the values of hard work and the rewards of dedication. The 19-year-old Eastern Shore native is a standout athlete on the football field who excelled at Parkside High School through his junior year. Transferring to Stephen Decatur High School for his senior year presented multiple challenges, including acclimating to a new environment, bonding with new students and teammates and learning a new playbook. A leader on and off the field, Kre met each obstacle with head on — and led the Seahawks in tackles while making lifelong friendships along the way. One of his first responsibilities as a young man was to manage the challenges of wearing braces.
Referred to Tilghman Orthodontics by pediatric dentist Dr. Jean Ann Lewis, Kre was outfitted with braces at age 14 by Dr. Michael Tilghman, who assessed and managed the subsequent care of his case.
“The experience of wearing braces teaches kids the importance of good oral hygiene. It also teaches them responsibility,” said Kre’s mom, Shae. “You must put in a lot of work on your own time to ensure the best results possible, such as wearing your rubber bands. Let’s be honest, no kid enjoys wearing those.”
Kre’s braces came off when he was 17, and he immediately reaped the benefits of his commitment. “Kresen has always been a happy kid, but after his braces came off, his smile got bigger, that’s for sure,” Shae said. “He’s very genuine and even more confident in himself.”
Kre received multiple collegiate offers to play football at Division 2 and 3 schools, but his dream was always to play Division 1. After receiving the opportunity as a walk-on at Southern Utah University, Kre was ecstatic.
“It says a lot about his confidence that he’s attending college in Cedar City, Utah — 2,500 miles away from home,” Shae said. “He was able to see the amazing results in the work he had to do wearing braces for multiple years. This was one of the responsibilities that he had to do to help guide him in his path of life.”

POHANKA FORD OF SALISBURY IS FOCUSED ON PROVIDING OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER A SALE, WORLD-CLASS VEHICLE SERVICE AND GIVING BACK TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
Pohanka Ford of Salisbury features one of the largest selections of new, used and certified preowned vehicles on the Eastern Shore — and its friendly and welcome sales team is on-hand at its state-of-theart showroom on Route 13 to assist Shore
residents with their next Ford purchase.
The Pohanka Family of Dealerships is firmly entrenched in the Washington D.C. Metro region, having roots in that area dating back to 1919. What started as a single service repair facility has grown to a family of 20 dealerships and 12 Collision Centers
throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC — and Pohanka is glad to add a Ford dealership to their lineup of brands on Route 13 in Salisbury.
There’s a reason when you heard “Ford” that you think of American automotive manufacturing.

The staff of Ford spent an April afternoon continuing their Spring of Giving Back. The team visited the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack and the Salisbury Police Department to deliver Girl Scout Cookies to local men and women in blue. The entire Pohanka of Salisbury family wishes to thank all of our local law enforcement officials for their dedication to our community. A special thanks to Girl Scout Troop 490 for the cookies.
Pohanka Ford of Salisbury teamed up with members of the Salisbury University baseball team to support the efforts of the Humane Society of Wicomico County (HSWC). On April 14, the crew took four adoptable dogs, Meadow, Lamby, Ferdi and John Wayne, on rides in Ford trucks to pick out toys at PetSmart. “Not only did they all give our dogs probably one of the best fun-filled days they’ve ever had, but Pohanka Ford of Salisbury also sponsored the adoption fees for these four pups,” a HSWC official said.
Nearly 80% of all Fords sold in this country are made in this country — and technology is always a priority in the company’s new models. Whether it’s their lines of innovative electric vehicles, headlined by the Ford Lightning, to revolutionary thinking, like its new filing for a patent of a cool, new “puddle lights,” which projects warnings and images on any surface, Ford is continuously a visionary in the industry.
When it comes to service for your vehicle, look no further than the experts at Pohanka Ford of Salisbury. Their team expertly operates one of the largest Ford service departments on the Shore — and with four Ford-certified Master Techs, a diesel truck specialist and 13 additionally trained technicians, your vehicle is the right hands at Pohanka Ford of Salisbury. The Covid-19 lockdown in the Spring of 2020 seems like a lifetime ago to me. The world was in a state of suspended animation, and we were searching for some sense of normalcy. My escape from that reality was my camera and photo opportunities at Cape Henlopen State Park. Never will there be a convenient time or place to be thrust into a full-blown pandemic shut down, but for me, that time was Spring — and that place was the coast of Delaware. It made the situation a little more bearable.

For me, a beautiful, warm day at the beach is made even better when there are very few people there with me. Memorial Day is the official start to summer for many people, especially for those who wait all winter to return to the beach from afar. If you are lucky enough to call the coast your home year-round, you can kick off the summer season well before the crowds arrive.

“I was asked to join an artist group in the area called The Artist Exchange, so that’s been nice. They’ve been really welcoming, and it’s made a big difference. We meet once a month and bring work for each other to critique,” shared Fields.
Laurie has also drawn inspiration from the Shore’s coastal setting and natural splendor. While her former work often featured darker colors, such as blacks, grays and browns, her more recent pieces highlight the colors of the area’s breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
“I have incorporated the new elements of what I had found in the area, so my new pieces actually have real foliage in them encased in many layers of encaustic wax. I melt the wax on a hot plate and apply it while it’s liquid. It hardens immediately, and it acts like a glue around the foliage, so there are many layers of wax encasing it and preserving it. Then, I cut up the pieces and arrange them with other things,” said Fields. CS

Worcester Preparatory School (WPS) sophomore Ben McGovern recently represented Team ISL U16 in the Mediterranean International Cup (MIC) held in Costa Brava, Spain. The event is a world-renowned youth soccer tournament that has featured countless numbers of current world soccer stars. Players for this Barcelona-based team were selected from a multi-tiered nationwide search process. Team ISL faced some of the most challenging opponents in the tournament, including last year’s champion, Olympique de Marseille. The team’s performance on the pitch was exceptional and Team ISL emerged as the champions of their bracket, with an impressive 6-2 record.
Ben plays soccer year-round for the prestigious regional soccer team, Maryland United FC ECNL 07.
Worcester Prep 6th grader Zac McGovern was recently selected for The Southhampton (SH) North American Select Tour during a regional soccer tournament in December, which he attended with his travel team. The nomination provided Zac the opportunity to spend his Easter break training at the Southampton Soccer Academy in England. While there, Zac gained invaluable insights from the SH development coaches and even trained alongside the first team as they prepared for their match against Man City. He enjoyed behind-the-scenes access to the St. Mary’s stadium and participated in two international games.
Zac was the MVP of this year’s WPS Middle School boys soccer team and will be a strong contributor to the school’s program for years to come. CS
The year was 1973, a year in which the United States ended its involvement in the Vietnam War; The Odd Couple was the No. 1 show on television; and the average cost of a new home was $32,500. It was also in 1973 that Wayne and Bobbi Lednum opened Creative Concepts in Sussex County with a simple yet profound philosophy to offer the best possible price at all times to their customers for quality service and products.
Much has changed in the past 50 years, and unfortunately, Bobbi and Wayne have passed on (in 2017
and 2022, respectively), but the company they founded and built together remains strong and successful, thanks in large part to their business model and principles.
“This is a new chapter for us, yet their legacy continues,” said son Craig Lednum, who has led the operations of Creative Concepts for many years with his brother, Steve, and Steve’s wife, Gail. “Not a lot changed, and there are a couple of reasons for that: We have a solid business model that we’re constantly improving; we believe in and empower our employees to succeed; and we truly value the relationships we’ve built with our customers.
“[My parents] believed in people and supporting the community. They also believed in letting us take the reins many, many years ago,” Craig continued. “Dad was a good teacher because he let you make mistakes as opposed to telling you were going to make a mistake. To me, every individual learns more from their mistakes as opposed to being told that something is wrong. That mindset has filtered down through our company over the years, and it builds a strength in people.”
Craig also credits the Creative Concepts team, from its designers and support staff to warehouse crews, for much of the company’s success, saying that without their “dedication, stability and input, we certainly wouldn’t be where we are today.” He also praised the company’s loyal customer base, stating that he thoroughly appreciates the genuine relationships that have been created with them over the years.
Creative Concepts was one of the very first furniture-and-home-accessory stores on the entire Shore to provide complimentary design services to their customers. From its humble beginnings in a 1,200-square-foot space in the York Beach Mall in South Bethany (and “our living room as a warehouse!” Craig recalled) to beautiful showrooms in Ocean View and Lewes totaling more than 27,000 square feet, Creative Concepts continues to operate in the very manner it had when its doors first opened 50 years ago — with honesty and integrity.
“Dad and I frequently discussed strategy, as it relates to the daily challenges, some beyond our control,” Craig said. “Agree or disagree, he would always ask, ‘Now what are you going to do about it?’ My answer has always been: Get up tomorrow and do the right thing.” CS

Investments and taxes are inextricably connected. You shouldn’t make a decision about one without flipping the coin to consider the implications on the other side. But most investment firms do not include accounting. That is one way Comprehensive Financial Solutions (CFS) stands out as a full-service, holistically minded partnership.
“Tax planning is fundamental, and with our tax practice, we can truly look forward,” said Michael Sise, Certified Financial Planner™, Vice President and Partner, relating that tax loss harvesting is a critical piece of the investment puzzle. J.D. Schroen, CPA, Investment Advisor Representative and President, explained the advantage clients gain from a truly
comprehensive approach. “We can determine how investment adjustments will affect taxes, and we can provide better recommendations by understanding what’s happening on both sides,” he said.
Plus, the firm takes a “ground-floor up” approach, Schroen said. Conversations center around short- and long-term goals, risk tolerance — life in general, such as planning for a child’s education, vacations, real estate, retirement and so on.
“From there, we craft a portfolio that is in line with a client’s comfort level, complementary to their tax situation and takes into consideration their goals,” Schroen said. Even in rocky markets, clients gain confidence
that a big-picture plan is in place that will help secure their futures.
As a firm, CFS is also focused on growth and leaving a legacy. Founded in 1988 by partners Frank Britingham and Bruce Robson, the company has expanded to a team of 21, with two offices, in Maryland and Delaware, serving generations of clients who appreciate their approach.
Sise pointed to the firm’s talent and commitment to client service as significant factors in CFS’ success.
“You need a great group of people to grow, and we definitely have that, and their contributions are what is making all of this possible,” he said. CS
Financial planning with a purpose has been the mission of PKS Investment Advisors for more than 24 years. “Our investment philosophy and approach are perhaps best defined by what they are not: stock picking and market timing, which are fruitless and costly efforts put forth in an attempt to ‘beat the market,’” said Daniel M. O’Connell II, CPA/PFS, CVA, who has more than 25 years of experience in accounting, auditing, taxation and financial planning. “Instead, our philosophy focuses on low-cost, evidence-based investing using institutional money managers.”
With offices conveniently located in Salisbury, Ocean City and Lewes, its team is well positioned to meet the needs of its clients across the Eastern Shore. The independent financial planning firm provides clients the benefits of customized strategies to mitigate tax implications and preserve wealth. “We only act as a fiduciary for our clients; meaning, we serve
our clients’ best interests at all times,” O’Connell said. “Recommendations and guidance are given only after we have a complete understanding of each client’s financial goals and individual circumstances.”
The firm’s experienced advisors partner with clients who range from those who have accumulated wealth for years and those experiencing emerging wealth to individuals who are growing their investments. “We work with individuals who want regular interaction about how their investments are performing and what that means for their financial plans,” O’Connell said.
Clients enjoy working with financial planning and accounting under one roof. “It enhances communication between all parties,” he said.
PKS offers financial planning, retirement planning, investment management and employer retirement plans. Partner Gigi LeKites,
CFP®, CRPC®, says “At PKS we focus on more than just investments. We take the worry out of retirement planning by helping our clients clearly define their financial goals and develop an implementation plan to achieve their longterm goals. Together, we explore topics like estate planning, long-term care planning, how to minimize your tax burden or even how to respond to market fluctuations. Simply put, we’re here to help with all aspects of our client’s financial lives.”
By marrying investment and tax management backed by PKS & Company, P.A., clients can access a comprehensive menu of financial planning and accounting services — a single source. PKS advisors can tap into the support of an entire team of financial professionals at all times. Said O’Connell: “Our clients know we are all working together on the same team, with the same goals in mind.” CS

In America today, the increased demand for physicians continues to outpace the relatively fixed supply of available doctors.
By 2034, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) anticipates doctor shortages of between 38,000 and 124,000 as an aging physician population nears retirement. Primary care and internal medicine face the greatest challenge, but the impact is being felt in all areas and specialties.
Each year, it becomes more difficult to keep pace, and nowhere is that shortage more prevalent than in rural areas like the Delmarva Peninsula, where attracting and retaining doctors remains problematic.
It’s why health systems like TidalHealth have launched residency training programs to prepare the next wave of physician specialists. TidalHealth Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs are designed to address the issue head on and with a focus on building a pipeline of doctors that will hopefully choose to stay where they hone their craft and specialty.
“These bright medical residents will bring fresh and up-to-date knowledge and practice to the bedside,” said Hameem Kawsar, MD, PhD, FACP, program director of TidalHealth’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. “Once they graduate, we are hopeful some of them will stay with us to serve patients in this area. They will be part of us, and they will help us build our community on Delmarva.”
A resident doctor is a doctor in training who is taking part in a GME program. They have already graduated medical school as an MD or a DO, but cannot practice independently until the completion of their residency. Physicians in a GME program continue their education, treat patients and train in a specialized field under the watchful eyes of skilled and board-certified physicians.
More than 300 physicians worldwide responded to TidalHealth’s call for surgical residency applications. From that, 46 were chosen to be interviewed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians. The four that matched with TidalHealth and agreed to do their residency on Delmarva will launch the first surgical residency program in July.
Each will spend five years being taught and evaluated by TidalHealth surgeons at the system’s Salisbury and Seaford hospitals, while providing care in a number of surgical specialties including bariatrics, breast, vascular, colorectal, endoscopy, plastics, trauma, pediatric and general surgery. Residents will also have the opportunity to rotate at Children’s National Hospital, Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland hospital, as TidalHealth has clinical relationships with each.
As the program grows, TidalHealth will eventually have as many as 22 surgical residents in training.
“Not only are we training the next generation of surgeons, we’re also helping to meet the need for increased medical services, creating opportunities for quality improvement and continuing the excellence in the delivery of care for everyone in the community, including those traditionally underserved,” said Gopal Kowdley, MD, Ph.D., FACS, and medical director of TidalHealth’s General Surgery Residency Program.
TidalHealth has also selected the second class of 10 physicians who will participate and train in TidalHealth’s Internal Medicine Residency Program, which began in June of 2022. More than 2,700 applications were received from doctors around the globe for 10 residency spots; 900 were initially chosen and reviewed, and just 205 offered interviews.
Internal medicine residents spend three years in the TidalHealth system observing, learning, researching and providing care. As that program continues to expand, as many as 30 doctors will be working alongside their internal medicine physician mentors annually.
Upon their completion of the program, residents will be eligible for full licensing or board certification, and possibly open their practice or join one locally. According to the AAMC, 51.7 percent of physicians who completed residency training from 2011 through 2020 continue to practice in the state where they completed their residencies.
“Remember, too, through each of these residents we are also introducing into our community a representation of diversity in the medical field, creating role models for our youth, helping to break down communication barriers and increasing access for care,” added Dr. Kowdley.
“Not only are we training the next generation of surgeons, we’re also helping to meet the need for increased medical services.”
Have you ever taken a single drop of colored dye and added it to a glass of water? What happens? I know, it’s not rocket science. The entire glass of water takes on the color of that single drop of dye. This speaks so loudly to me about the importance of mental health.
Mental health influences every area of our lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines mental health as our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health impacts how we experience and process emotions, thoughts, and the manner in which we interact and form relationships with others. It shapes how we view ourselves, others and the world in general. We can’t even compartmentalize our physical health from our mental health.
According to the CDC, mental health is crucial to our overall health. Did you know depression can increase your risk of developing health problems such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes?
Because mental health permeates and impacts every area of our lives, it’s critical we make ourselves a priority and engage in self-care that nourishes and nurtures our emotional, psychological, and social
well-being. Self-care is choosing to invest in yourself. Challenge yourself to think beyond viewing self-care as manicures, pedicures and bubble baths. Those things are great forms of self-care, but we can delve deeper.
Self-care also includes, but is not limited to:
• Setting boundaries
• Forgiving others
• Forgiving yourself
• Practicing gratitude
• Disconnecting from toxic relationships
• Embracing healthy relationships
• Learning to say no
• Learning to say yes
• Engaging in prayer or meditation
• Exercising
• Fueling your body with healthy foods
• Maintaining your preventative care doctor appointments
• Engaging in activities that bring you joy, laughter, or peace
• Taking naps
• Connecting with a therapist or life coach
• Limiting your television and or phone time
• Delegating tasks
• Healing from unresolved trauma
• Developing a sleep routine
• Recognizing your limitations
• Acknowledging your strengths
• Learning and implementing adaptive coping strategies
Self-care includes but far exceeds the adornment and pampering of our physical bodies; the nourishment of our mind and soul is also vital and necessary to the development and maintenance of good mental health. It’s an investment. The quality of your life depends on it. Invest wisely.
Dietary fiber is essential to a healthy diet — the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which sets national nutrition recommendations, says to make at least half the grains you eat whole grains. Following this guideline might be easier, tastier and more beneficial than you think.
First, know the benefits. Dietary fiber helps you feel full, which can curb overeating. It can also lower cholesterol levels and keep your digestive system working the way it should. It can even help regulate your blood sugar levels — this is especially helpful for avoiding type 2 diabetes, and vital for managing the condition for those who have it. But to gain these benefits, make sure you are getting the right types of fiber.
• ●Soluble fiber is the type that can help control blood sugar and cholesterol, as well as slowing down your digestion. Easy ways to get soluble fiber include apples, bananas, oatmeal, peas, beans and avocados.
• Insoluble fiber keeps your digestive system moving along in a healthy way. This type of fiber can be found in whole wheat, seeds, nuts, bran and the skins of many fruits and vegetables.
Keep it simple! Dip baby carrots in hummus, enjoy a handful of almonds or crunch into an apple.
It is important to note that some people can’t eat a high-fiber diet — if you have recently had digestive tract surgery or have another condition in which your doctor has suggested a low-fiber diet would help, follow your doctor’s orders.
For most people, getting more fiber is a win. Registered dietitians can provide medical nutrition therapy, as well as education for people with diabetes that includes healthy eating tips. Visit tidalhealth.org/eathealthy to learn more about services near you.
If you would like to change your diet to lose weight and improve your overall health, call TidalHealth Medical Weight Loss & Bariatric Nutrition at 302-297-2412 or visit tidalhealth.org/findyourhealthyweight.
What to do if you have been bitten by a tick. Ticks are common throughout Delmarva, and since many of us spend time outdoors among the Shore’s wealth of nature, tick bites happen. What should you do if you have been bitten by a tick? It is important to take certain steps to prevent the potential transmission of diseases. Here are some things you can do if you have been bitten by a tick:
Remove the tick as soon as possible. To do this, use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Gently pull the tick straight out without twisting or jerking it. Avoid using heat, petroleum jelly, or other methods to try to remove the tick, as these can actually increase the risk of disease transmission.
If possible, save the tick for identification. Place the tick in a clean container and store it in the refrigerator. This can help your healthcare provider determine if the tick was carrying any diseases, and can help guide treatment if necessary. A whopping 20 to 30 percent of deer ticks in Maryland carry Lyme disease, but not all types of ticks are carriers.
Clean the bite area. Once the tick has been removed, clean the bite area with soap and water or an alcoholbased disinfectant. This will help to prevent infection.
Monitor the bite site for signs of infection. The signature red bulls-eye rash of Lyme disease occurs in about 70 to 80 percent of cases, so if you see it appear, call a doctor. However, you could be among those who never develop a rash, so keep an eye out for other symptoms like headache, fever and fatigue. Other diseases can result from tick bites as well, and it can take some time for symptoms to emerge. Mark the bite date on the calendar so you won’t forget to mention it to your doctor if you feel unwell later, even if you don’t have any symptoms right away.
Take preventative measures to avoid tick bites in the future. To reduce your risk of being bitten by a tick, try to avoid areas with tall grass or dense vegetation. If you are hiking or camping in tick-infested areas, wear long pants and sleeves, and use an insect repellent that contains DEET or permethrin. Additionally, check yourself, your children, and your pets for ticks after spending time outdoors.
Make sure to have a family doctor you can turn to when something like a tick bite arises. Visit tidalhealth.org/find-a-doctor if you need a provider.

Overcrowded hospital emergency rooms are a challenge across the country. With the growing volume of patients, Dr. Walter Gianelle knew there had to be a better way to provide access to urgent and immediate care. So, in 2005, the experienced ER physician partnered with two other specialists to form Your Doc’s In (YDI), which has grown into a leader in urgent care on the Eastern Shore.
Over the years, YDI has expanded, filling a gap for no-appointment-necessary urgent and occupational care. “Urgent cares are like the spokes in the wheel for unscheduled illness and injury,” Dr. Gianelle said.
Now, with the partnership between YDI and TidalHealth, the 125-year-old health system can even more efficiently direct patients to the care they need. TidalHealth holds a 50% share in the YDI franchise, with six locations. Peninsula Health Ventures, a TidalHealth company, will provide administrative support for both partners.
“This is an extension and natural progression of that single location relationship to be more closely aligned across the Delmarva Peninsula,” explained Dr. Gianelle, noting that the partnership started in 2016 at the South Salisbury practice across from the university. Now, all YDIs are aligned with TidalHealth.
In a statement about the partnership, TidalHealth president/CEO Steve Leonard, PhD, MBA, FACHE, said, “The Your Doc’s In partnership ensures our ability to provide residents with the right care at the right time and in the right location across Delmarva.”
Dr. Gianelle added, “We can take care of fractures, sutures and more — and we have certified labs in all of our offices, in addition to X-ray capabilities — so this really broadens what we do.”
He calls it an “urgent level of care,” and the robust services represent an extension of what healthcare patients can access through the TidalHealth system. Plus, the partnership assures continuity of care, should a patient require follow-up visits.
“We can provide really streamlined healthcare to the community,” Dr. Gianelle said. “This collaboration ensures that we remain partners in care, committed to the integration of services and focused on providing the best access at both emergent and urgent locations.”
YDI clinics are led by board-certified physicians and medical specialists. With the partnership, YDI’s providers and support staff still handle day-to-day care. CS
Board-certified gynecologist Dr. Michael DiClemente has been providing comprehensive women’s healthcare for nearly 21 years. Specializing in the evaluation and treatment of a wide variety of health issues unique to women, such as menstrual irregularities, menopause evaluation and treatment, among others, he joined Atlantic General Health System in the summer of 2022 to provide care at Atlantic General Women’s Health in Selbyville and West Ocean City. He will soon begin seeing patients in Ocean View. Dr. DiClemente has seen several new advancements in recent years enhance his ability to care for his patients.
“There have been a number of positive developments with regard to medical treatment of uterine fibroids, endometriosis and abnormal uterine bleeding, as examples,” he said. “These options expand the number of patients who can potentially avoid surgical intervention. For those patients who require surgery, the vast majority are candidates for a minimally invasive
approach. This leads to shorter recovery times, less blood loss, less pain, and patients are typically able to go home the same day.”
Dr. DiClemente, who completed his OB/ GYN residency at University of MassachusettsWorcester, stressed the importance of women maintaining a regular screening schedule as a part of their healthcare routine.
“Maintaining a regular screening schedule allows for the detection of abnormalities as they arise, and in most cases has a positive impact on life expectancy,” he said. “Most importantly, having an established relationship with your provider proves to be an invaluable resource when concerns arise.
“Like most of us, when we seek care from a doctor, our symptoms are likely impacting our lives in some negative way,” Dr. DiClemente continued. “The reward comes from finding solutions that help resolve the symptoms and allow patients to return back to their regular lives.”
Due to several factors that exist in today’s healthcare environment, the amount of time a physician can spend with a patient has been greatly reduced. For Dr. Sandra Mancilla, a board-certified physician of family medicine with Atlantic General Primary Care in Selbyville, combating this challenge means maximizing the amount of quality time and communication with each patient during their office visit.
“I try to gather as much information as I can about the patient’s conditions before the encounter,” Dr. Mancilla said. “I prioritize immediate needs, review preventive care each visit and offer subsequent appointments to help address further issues.”
Being a physician in the post-pandemic world presents additional obstacles for the profession, but Dr. Mancilla sees tremendous value in the advent of telehealth technologies and in encouraging her patients to remain
positive and to focus on what is most important to them.
“Patients appreciate the access to telehealth medicine, especially when they have transportation issues, workschedule conflicts or acute issues that do not necessarily require in-office visits,” said Dr. Mancilla, who has more than 14 years of clinical experience in community medicine and is fluent in both English and Spanish. “[I share with my patients that] the past is in the past. Live the present and prepare for the future. Focus on good health habits and stress management.”
The most rewarding aspects of her profession involve the creation of a genuine bond with her patients.
“I enjoy growing with my patients, creating longstanding relationships, the continuity of care and helping them through up and downs of life,” she said.
For people suffering from severe hip or knee pain, routine tasks of daily living may become unbearable. But thanks to advances in musculoskeletal health, there is new hope that they can return to a painfree life filled with purpose.
“The first step in addressing hip or knee pain is to make an appointment with your primary care provider or orthopedic surgeon, says Christopher M. Farrell, MD, of Atlantic General Orthopedic Surgery. “Even if one has severe arthritis, the first line treatment is almost always some form of non-operative care, such as weight loss, exercise, medications, injections or bracing. For patients with severe pain and advanced arthritis who do not improve with these nonsurgical measures, surgery may be indicated in the form of a hip or knee replacement. Fortunately, with the advent of the modern total hip and knee replacement, millions of people have had
substantial relief of pain and improvement in mobility.”
Dr. Farrell is a subspecialist in hip and knee replacement with more than 20 years of extensive experience. He notes that there have been many advancements in the field of total hip and knee replacement surgery. Some of the most notable include better techniques to ease pain after surgery while reducing the use of opioid medications and early mobilization of patients with discharge often on the same day of surgery.
“As orthopedic surgeons we have a great impact on the overall health of our patients. It brings me great satisfaction to get to know a patient and help them through their musculoskeletal care, “Dr. Farrell said. “We are often able to dramatically improve a patient’s pain and restore their mobility.”
Kieran Py of Atlantic General Primary Care in Ocean View makes sure health insurance demands do not interfere with the care he provides to patients and the quality of the doctorpatient relationship.
“One of the biggest challenges today is, unfortunately, dealing with the insurance companies,” Dr. Py said. “They dictate how much time you get to spend with your patients and what documentation they feel is necessary, which is frequently unrelated to what the patient actually came in for. While the insurance companies are a challenge, it is certainly still possible to provide great patient care.
“Listening to patients and asking targeted follow-up questions help a lot with this issue,” Dr. Py continued. “There
is no way to change what time we have, but it is possible to improve the quality of that time. Clear and concise speaking and listening are key.”
A member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Py joined Atlantic General Health System in February 2017 after completing his family medicine residency at Northwell Health’s Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY.
At the end of the day, regardless of how much red tape exists in his office, Dr. Py finds tremendous reward in providing expert care for his patients.
“Overwhelmingly, the most important aspect of my profession is being able to help others,” Dr. Py said. “That is why I went into this profession, and I sleep with a clear conscience at night, knowing I have provided care for those in need.”
CUSTOM-POOL EXPERT NICOLE ASHTON EXPLAINS WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE DESIGN-AND-CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
Written by Kristen Hampshire | Photography by Meg ShupeReady to take the plunge into a custom, luxury pool project — or a full-scale outdoor living space that incorporates water and fire features, grilling and dining areas, and serves as an ideal extension of your indoors?
What’s “out” is in.
Especially along the coast, outdoor spaces can capitalize on views and provide space for relaxing and entertaining on the water. And more than ever, adding a luxury pool to the picture is a priority. From family-friendly freeform designs that include features like a slide or waterfall to intimate cocktail pools designed for dipping and sipping, the possibilities are endless with customdesigned pools.
You might be wondering what’s involved in the pool-design-and-construction process. How long will it take, and who is involved in completing the work? How does a project go from idea to installation?
Here, Nicole Ashton, owner of Ashton Pools by Design, shares what to expect when building a custom pool.
A custom pool starts with inspiration and vision — a wish list of wants and needs that requires some homework, Ashton said. “We ask for photos, and we can identify trends, such as maybe all of the photos have waterfalls, firepits or outdoor kitchens,” she related. “Maybe they all have tanning ledges or infinity edges.”
Sites like Houzz and Pinterest, along with galleries from pool companies, can serve as important conversation starters as a pool builder gets to know your preferences. “We set up uninterrupted time to talk about how clients will use the pool and who will use the pool,” Ashton said. “Are you going to be standing in the pool, talking to a friend with a cocktail, or diving in to swim with family?”
Another critical part of this initial process is understanding the pool project scope and client’s address. “In our area, there are some lot coverage restrictions, and we want to look at a land survey,” Ashton noted, adding that plot plans identify wetlands you can’t necessarily see when you step on-site.
Budget also comes into play. This way, the pool designer can help prioritize features and tailor a custom pool that aligns with the vision and investment. “If a pool design includes six different components, do we take one out? What could be completed at a later time, in phases?” Ashton shared.
With 3D modeling design software, a formal design comes to life — a rendering that acts as a master plan for the outdoor living space and pool. No two jobs are alike in the custom pool arena, Ashton emphasized.
“Once we have the scope of work, we can provide a timeline for the pool and other elements,” she said. “That helps clients understand how long we will be on-site.”
A timeline also sets expectations for which specialists will be on-site to complete every component of the project. At Ashton Pools by Design, a multitalented team, which includes professionals experienced in all aspects of pool installation, allows the company to manage the entire project in-house. The benefit for clients: a single point of contact and a cohesive, seamless, pool-construction experience.
When a company subcontracts many aspects of the work, there tends to be a lot of stop-and-go during installation, Ashton pointed out. “Here, we can control the schedule. Our team digs about 30 pools a year, so they are accustomed to the variables that can happen on a coastal build in Maryland and Delaware, with our sandy soils and flooded-out sites,” she explained.
Also, Ashton Pools by Design has a PebbleTec specialist who installs the aggregate pool finish that is durable, elegant and available in 64 different colors. “You can go from classic white to rich blue; also trending are darker colors,” she said.
There are more than 400 different waterline pool tile options. “These include solid colors, glass tiles, recycled tiles, large format and mosaics — it’s definitely custom,” Ashton said. “You can select colors that accent the house, to have a collaborative feel between the indoors and outdoors.”
During the pool-building process, ongoing communication keeps everyone in the loop. And after completion and final inspections, the custom pool not only provides enjoyment and extends the living space to the outdoors, it also increases property value.
Ashton said, “We love building one-of-a-kind outdoor living spaces for our clients.”
Eight lms to include documentaries and features along with a mustsee block of shorts will be presented over three days (June 9 - 11) at the Society’s Cinema Art Theater in Lewes.
Confirmed film titles include KOKOMO CITY, HORSEPLAY, MAMA BEAR and PASSAGES Confirmed film titles include IT’S ONLY LIFE AFTER ALL, KOKOMO CITY, HORSEPLAY, MAMA BEARS and PASSAGES. The Society will also host a late-night special feature of the film classic, ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW for festival moviegoer’s and a special student rate. Participants can expect other social gatherings in celebration of the Festival and PRIDE Month. Visit rehobothfilm.com to view film schedule and purchase tickets.
Go local “When you are dealing with national companies that are located elsewhere, they are not necessarily used to our sandy soils and coastal variables,” Ashton pointed out. Also, partner with a professional who understands local building restrictions and zoning as they relate to lot coverage and wetlands.
Think big picture A swimming pool and spa are part of an overall outdoor living environment. Consider a multiphase project, if necessary. But, start with a comprehensive plan, so you can prioritize your investments.
The case for custom From selecting tile to choosing a pool finish — from the pool shape, depth and size to features like an infinity edge, tanning ledge and LED color-changing lighting, you can truly have it your way with a custom pool design, Ashton said. “By going custom, we can create anything you can imagine.” CS
YARD DESIGNS, INC. RESTORED RIGHTFUL GLORY TO AN ICONIC LEWES PROPERTY WITH A NOD TO HISTORY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Fisher’s Paradise is the oldest waterfront home in Lewes, Delaware — a property that housed major figures in the Revolutionary War, not to mention the early U.S. presidents who passed through it. The first doctor in the region lived in this 1737 palatial colonial, which was known for its sweeping gardens and majestic trees, including a relic from the past: a 200-year-old American Poplar.
The home is named Fisher’s Paradise for its original owner and the region’s first physician, Dr. Henry Fisher. The current owners of Fisher’s Paradise are equally steeped in its history, and for the past several years have been restoring the home inside and out. That includes a sweeping renovation and preservation of the landscaping, designed and constructed by Bryan LeCompte and Yard Designs, Inc.
“The spirit of the house is the craftsmanship and value put into it over the years by the workers and gardeners during 300 years of time,” says the homeowner, relating that he intentionally selected a team of professionals who appreciate this approach.
“With Bryan’s vision, we preserved the historic nature of the landscaping with the same brick and stone detail while integrating some modern features — and he maintained a state-of-the-art perspective on how to strike that balance,” the homeowner said. LeCompte added, “This was a true opportunity to be part of the home’s history and a key instrument in bringing it back to life.”
Inspired by the stone used in ship ballasts during colonial times, a stately wall that wraps around Fisher’s Paradise offers aesthetic texture and visual strength, LeCompte says. “It delineates the property’s edge from the busy street, and a break in the wall with a custom, iconic pedestrian gate creates privacy yet appears inviting,” he says.
The idea was to create timeless appeal — “Structural integrity that will take the historic property far into the future,” LeCompte said.
The stones are nearly as old as the property, harvested from Tennessee and New York. An interior mortar treatment as opposed to the typical surface mortar conceals the binder. The wall looks as if it is stacked stone.
“The gate is very important to me,” the owner shared. His family are steelworkers from Germany, immigrating to Baltimore about 150 years ago. His grandfather built steel ships, and his brothers are an ironsmith and coppersmith, operating the family business, Federal Hill Ironworks.
The wrought-iron gate was hand constructed by his family with a sun emblem to represent brightness and light. A copper cupola atop the outdoor fireplace was handconstructed and weighs nearly 500 pounds.
Strategically positioned hydrangea gardens showcase a range of colors — purples, reds, blues, whites. “Hydrangeas were common throughout the history of this house,” the owner points out.
So were English boxwoods. The original ones Dr. Fisher planted he brought from his home country of Ireland. “Bryan took that concept and replicated the theme,” the owner said.
LeCompte shared how plant selections blend traditional formality (boxwoods) with coastal casual native grasses. “It’s a nod to the beach environment,” he said, adding that hydrangea means water vessel in Greek.
The owner maintains the gardens himself, staying true to the home’s legacy. Yard Designs manages the major maintenance like mulching, tree and shrub care and extensive cleanups. “The neighbors of Dr. Henry Fisher named the gardens Fisher’s Paradise because he would spend his weekends managing his own garden,” he said.
A stately outdoor fireplace constructed from brick original to the property is a centerpiece for family gatherings and brings a cozy warmth to the landscape. While it was newly created, bricks were the crumbling backwall of the previous kitchen. “It’s mortar that deteriorates over time, not bricks, so we saved those,” the owner said.
LeCompte added, “It was created to be reminiscent of a former summer kitchen fireplace end wall that might have stood on the property.”
Its mantel is resilient Brazilian hardwood — again, a nod to longevity and craftsmanship. The owner points out, “It does not fade with time, and it will last another few hundred years.”
Relaxing on the porch with coffee in the mornings and retiring to the side portico, listening to nature, are just some of the ways that Fisher’s Paradise owners enjoy the property and the fruits of much labor that went into its preservation and renewal. “We’re so proud of this property — it’s in the first town in the first state, and the renovations are true to the historic nature of the home.” CS
Plant-and-tree care is a science — one that’s rooted in nature’s variables like soil composition and environmental conditions. Lush, green grass, healthy tree canopies and vigorous plants are no accident.
“Healthy soil equals healthy roots, and healthy roots equal healthy plants,” said Ritchie Thurman, president of AC Plant & Turf in Lewes, which he launched in 2014 and has since
added a second location, in Selbyville.
Thurman fell in love with the green industry while pursuing a marketing degree in college. He went to work for a general arbor-care company and discovered a passion for preserving trees’ health. But he realized most major tree companies do very little plant care, and “that side of the business doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.”
This is not the case at AC Plant & Turf, which includes lawn care on its service menu, so customers can make one call for all things green and growing on their properties. A custom approach is important when caring for the landscape, Thurman added, as is experience navigating the complex Eastern Shore conditions, which include sandy soils and humid, salty air.
“We pay a lot of attention to soil composition, and aside from pulling soil samples, we look deeper,” Thurman said. “And before we start a program, we amend the soil to develop healthy root structure.”
Tailored lawn and tree care programs are prescribed by the AC Plant & Turf team, which consists of plant scientists, agronomists and ISA-certified arborists. “Our staff comes with field experience and education, with some holding eightyear degrees,” Thurman said, adding that homeowners’ associations across the Delmarva Peninsula depend on those specialists to maintain their large-scale properties.
Beyond plant science, customer care is an integral aspect of maintaining healthy trees, turf and plants, Thurman pointed out. A dedicated customer relations team at AC Plant & Turf personally addresses phone calls and requests.
Plant & Turf owner Ritchie Thurman first fell in love with the green industry while he was pursuing a marketing degree in college. His company now services the Delaware-Maryland coastal region.
“When people call in, they can talk to a person and ask questions,” he said. It’s not unusual for AC Plant & Turf to make a quick stop out to a client’s property to check in. And with a new location close to Ocean City, this level of care is “right in your backyard,” Thurman added.
Serving the community is a priority for AC Plant & Turf, spanning from plant care to sharing knowledge. The company’s experts consult with homeowners to HOAs and offer education when opportunities arise. Thurman sees every property AC Plant & Turf maintains as a partnership. “We don’t just come to your property and spray,” Thurman said. “We diagnose, treat and care.” CS
Imagine entertaining guests in a fully appointed gourmet kitchen, then relaxing in front of the fireplace in a welcoming, open living space that accommodates movie night or book club — or whatever you want to do to unwind at home — in a space that’s perfect, from its color schemes to its furnishings, fabrics, artwork and accessories. This is ultimately the goal of a model-home design team: to deliver decor and furnishings selections that offer functionality, personality and a feeling of, “I can see us living here.” And it’s about navigating a fine balance between introducing the latest design aesthetics with timeless style that can grow with a homeowner, evolve with the times and stay relevant for years to come.
EMBRACING EARTH TONES
Designer Susan Herring is seeing a warming trend in color palettes. “Greens are super popular, with a comeback of sage green, even in kitchen cabinets,” she said. “After COVID and everything going on in the world, people want comfort.”
“We work to choose furnishings that are comfortable that most people would love to have in their homes — and add color as opposed to only a neutral palette,” said Nelly Arnold, president of Décor Direct in Rehoboth, a firm that offers model-home decor along with residential design services for individual clients.
For example, at Schell Brothers’ Hailey’s Glen community in Lewes, Décor Direct capitalizes on a “modern style that is approachable,” said Arnold, relating that the aesthetic is natural, textural and woodsy. “We create spaces that support the mission of the community, which is in a beautiful, wooded setting with larger lots and very family-oriented.”
An airy, open feel is appealing across the board and an objective for builders and homeowners alike. Also, more clients are requesting furniture selections that allow for flexibility, so they can rearrange pieces when they wish to achieve a fresh look, Arnold stated. “Overall, we see a focus in the industry on being able to change furniture around, so as designers, we want to choose pieces that do not have to be laid out exactly one way to the inch,” she said.
FAR FROM NEUTRAL Décor Direct looks for furnishings that are comfortable and that most people would love to have in their homes — eschewing a neutrals-only philosophy.
Décor Direct expertly incorporates the latest design aesthetics while embracing elements of timeless style and good taste.
Here, Arnold and decorators Susan Herring and Jaime Senard share at-home-inspired looks that are emerging — and sustainable.
Down to Earth. While clean white and grays are still popular, designer Susan Herring says there’s a warming trend. “We are seeing more natural tones — and greens are super popular, with a comeback of sage green, even in kitchen cabinets,” she said. “After COVID and everything going on in the world, people want comfort. Back to nature is what I’m seeing.”
Warmer Woods. Rather than all white, designer Jaime Senard notices more clients are leaning toward wood cabinetry. “It brings in that natural element,” she offered, adding that warmer floor tones are also on the scene. The look is still clean and accessories are carrying the color. “Rather than adding too many heavy materials, clients want their personality to come to life with colors in accent pieces like art and pillows.”
Solid State. Rather than incorporating an influx of bold patterns, Arnold sees a preference for solid colors and monochromatic treatments. “We’re seeing more muted patterns and solids,” she said, relating that coastal communities with views do not want to take away from what’s on the horizon.
Remember the Jewelry. Herring calls drapery “the jewelry” because panels and sheers truly complete a room. “We’re seeing drapery come back in a pretty serious way with all of our clients. It’s that finishing touch that makes a house feel like home.” CS
MAIN EVENT. A vaulted ceiling in the main living space creates a room “with a lot of volume,” Tolbert shared. “We wanted to make it a more intimate space.” To invite more character, the team added a grid trim pattern painted white against a Sherwin-Williams gray called On the Rocks. This plays off of the one-by-one wall trim treatments throughout the home and wood detailing on shelves flanking the fireplace.
“With the high ceiling, we wanted the space to feel grounded with the navy rug,” Tolbert added. “And to allow for ample seating, there are two sofas along with chairs with textural, ropelike sides and backs. They tie into the coastal feel and the basket-weave seating in the den and dining room.”
After the design and decor selections — after the installation, accessorizing and tweaking just so — the McCormacks entered their Florida southern, in Lakewood Ranch. The curtains opened on a carefully orchestrated customization process.
“Walking into a home that was pretty much completely finished, you see all of the decisions you made come together,” said Jill McCormack, relating that she and husband David had gotten to know the Sarasota area well over the years. It was a natural progression from their home base in Philadelphia, though an across-the-pond commute from their roots in England and Ireland.
The couple decided to build a home with Homes by Towne in the Lake House Cove development, where a prime waterfront lot spoke to them. Having previously sailed while living in the Bahamas and coveting their time on the waves and beachfront, this up-and-coming community offered an opportunity to get the floor plan they desired, the views they appreciate and a next-level renovation to tailor the model home to their specifications.
The McCormacks enlisted in Kristin Tolbert and team at Trade Mark Interiors in Sarasota to appoint the home with Florida-inspired finishes and aesthetic upgrades, from wallcoverings and paint to draperies, furnishings and artwork.
“We knew the footprint we wanted, but we didn’t want the cookie-cutter,” McCormack said. “And any [furniture] we had up north would not have fit down here; the style is just very different. It’s heavier, darker. So we wanted to be open, realizing that coming from a different part of the country, what would be the fit down here?”
Smooth Sailing. Because the home is an open floor plan, a cohesive mindset was a must. Flooring throughout is a wood-like tile in a charcoal blend that allows the white grout to pop. On the Rocks paint color is used throughout the main living spaces, and a recurring theme of oneby-one wall treatments mirroring shiplap brings texture and depth to the walls, ceilings and build-ins, like bookcases.
Playing with Pattern. The guest room includes patterns in various scales that complement each other, Tolbert explains. The finely pinstriped, upholstered bed base and headboard works with the drapery’s muted, freeform stripes in blues. Pillows introduce a larger geometrical variation on the theme. A trio of circular art prints changes up the pattern yet again, bringing in deeper blues against a wall finished in one-by-one. “You get texture from the rug with crochet endings and bouclé — and there is even texture on the lamps and nail-head detail on the headboard,” Tolbert said.
Tolbert, Trade Mark Interiors’ design director, said, “We wanted to deliver that true Florida feel, and because their house is on the water, we brought that to life by incorporating blues and a coastal vibe.” Lakewood Ranch is on a desirable man-made lake and located between Bradenton and Sarasota. With land available, it’s gaining attention as a place to build. The McCormacks’ priorities were to capitalize on the indoor/outdoor living possibilities, repurpose some spaces to suit their lifestyle and add custom touches to elevate the look and feel.
And another important ask of the design team: “Leave us some projects,” McCormack said. “My husband is very good on the do-it-yourself front, so there were projects built into the design that were going to be on us to complete, such as the custom window seat, soffits and the built-in bookcase in the den, among others.”
Hall Marks. Opening up a long hallway that leads from the front entry to the main living area is possible with a full-wall mirror treatment that is 12 feet tall. “The plated mirror allows you to see the reflection of the wall art across from the kitchen opening,” Tolbert explained, pointing to nautical stylings throughout. A passthrough to the kitchen is a “stop-and-drop area” — a functional bumpout. Again, the same Sherwin-Williams gray paint on walls carries through these spaces to avoid choppiness.
Awash in Texture. A third bedroom for the McCormacks’ daughter is a calming retreat, with wallcovering by Schumacher Queen of Spain in Sky that looks like a painterly brick wash. Rather than a dresser, Tolbert brought in an oversized basketweave chest for storage. Creamy drapery carries on the softness and a textured rug in a neutral oyster, with touches of ocean blue, is understated yet rich with detail.
Lakefront Lanai. The lanai is a go-to space in the home with unobstructed water views, thanks to a ClearView screen that looks like door molding and is completely retractable, so it is hidden from view when not in use. Lake breezes flow through the home. Flooring, in Florida-esque travertine, is weather-ready and softened with an indooroutdoor rub adding pops of blue. “The outdoor lanai is spacious, and we played off of the blues in the kitchen with outdoor furnishings,” Tolbert said.
Reimagining Spaces. The den was designed as a fourth bedroom, but the couple aimed to reinvent the space. “Moving to Florida, we lost a basement, so the den is like our basement equivalent,” McCormack said. Glass barn doors maintain an open environment, while walls coated in deep Charcoal Blue by Sherwin-Williams provide a cozy feel you might get from a room Down Under. The wall built-ins were designed by Trade Mark Interiors and built by David McCormack. An adjacent pool bath and access to the outdoor space make this a true work/play retreat.
And for her, a home-office area at the end of the entrance hall and adjacent to the kitchen provides convenient, productive space. Shelves are curated, with Tolbert pointing out the importance of selecting accessories as a video call backdrop. Philip Jeffries wallcovering in soft blue is decorative and functional for acoustic purposes.
Away in the Primary. “A serene retreat was the goal — somewhere quiet, where you can shut the door and be in your own area,” Tolbert described. Layered drapery treatments include functional panels partnered with sheets and shutters on the back window for total privacy. A cream, high-backed bed with crisp, clean bedding juxtaposes a bold, navy rug. “It’s a mix of an Ikat geometric with a Moroccan flair.”
Upon completion, Tolbert shared, “It was so exciting to see the impact of a furnished house — the big reveal. Walking through the completely furnished home was so special.” CS

When the tenants adjacent to Ocean City’s Longboard Café decided not to renew their lease, owner Rick Vach saw an opportunity to paddle his local-favorite restaurant through the perfect wave of expansion and reconfiguration.
“The first thing that we knew we needed was a much bigger bar. I wanted to make a U-shaped bar so that people could see across the bar and socialize,” Rick shared.
The massive new bar features a sleek design that pulls in elements of surf culture, such as bamboo siding and mounted wooden surfboards. The expanded area includes vaulted ceilings, an enlarged host stand and a
space to facilitate carryout orders.
“Ever since COVID-19, carryout has been a large part of our business,” said Rick.
The addition also contains a gourmet market, where guests can shop for dry-aged, grass-fed beef cuts from Maryland-based Roseda Farm, as well as an assortment of high-quality cheeses, jams, jellies, spices, and much more.
Additionally, there are house-made products, including Longboard’s famous addiction sauce and wrinkle green bean sauce, available for purchase.
As part of the renovation, Rick had the existing bar removed. This allowed for some
revamping within the initial space, including new booth seating, more separation between tables and a more open doorway.
“We wanted to expand. And if you have been there before and after, it just seems like a completely different space,” said Rick.
Longboard Café officially unveiled its new expansion in early March. While there have been many physical upgrades recently, the excellent customer service and delicious food, which elevates and takes new spins on classic surf-shack food and beverages, have remained the same. CS

There is no ingredient Stefano Bono shies away from when dressing innovative pizzas that are handmade and baked in the stone ovens at Carmela’s Cucina. Creativity is his specialty. Chicken and waffles on a pizza? Order up! Sausage and sweets with ricotta and honey? You got it.
And how about a lattice-topped spaghetti pizza with pasta tossed in-house arrabiata, garlic cloves, fresh basil and sausage? “The stuffed-crust pizza looks like a pie — you can see the layers,” Bono said, calling it “beautiful, delicious and it has some heat to it.”
At Carmela’s Cucina, every dish is made to order and the Bono family uses as many fresh, local ingredients as possible. Pastas are imported from Italy, and a local butcher supplies meats.
“Every single day, there is variety,” added Bono, noting that a constant rotation of pizza types, along with staples that guests expect, offer inspiring tastes for those with adventurous palates and selections for customers who want their “usual.” Though, arguably, there is nothing usual about Carmela’s Cucina. The family-owned business started in Wilmington in 1988 as Charlie’s
Pizzaman — a venture Bono’s parents Charlie and Carmela grew for a dozen years before opening their first sit-down restaurant in town in 2000, called Café Luna. In 2012, an opportunity in Cambridge prompted the couple to relocate and start Carmela’s Cucina. The family moved the business to its current location, at 400 Academy St., in 2014, after renovating the space with their own two hands, with the help of family and friends.
Bono and his siblings, Marianna and Michele, grew up in the restaurants. “After school, I’d go to the pizzeria and sit on 50-pound bundles of flour and do my homework,” Bono shared. “It was home.”
In fact, everyone who works and dines at Carmela’s Cucina is treated like family and invited to the table to taste longtime recipes and new selections.
“We keep the tradition alive by using the same recipes my mom started with — and we are also thinking way outside the box,” Bono says of the flavorful, bold pizza types the cucina offers.
“We do a chicken-bacon-ranch with a barbecue drizzle and red onion, and when that comes out of the oven, you can smell that applewoodsmoked bacon and caramelized onion,” Bono said.

The majority of Carmela’s Cucina’s menu items are made fresh daily by Stefano Bono.
He even concocted a PB&J pizza with a house-made peanut butter wing sauce and reduced jelly for tossing fried chicken. The first three customers in the shop that day bought up all the slices.
Pasta sauces are made from scratch daily, and the versatile dough recipe is also the base for pretzels, breads, bagels and more. Aside from signature pizzas, Carmela’s Cucina offers signature seafood and veal, a range of pasta favorites, made-to-order subs, wraps, salads and chicken dishes.
Always “on the menu” is a family feel and authentic experience. Guests might hear Charlie break out in song and see Carmela bustle around in the kitchen. Bono’s grandfather likes to sit at a table and watch his favorite Italian soccer club, Juventus. The legacy at Carmela’s Cucina continues. Bono said, “There is no limit to what we can do.” CS

Gray Whale Gin believes a lovingly handcrafted spirit brings people together for good times, and while together, they can also do some good in the world. It’s a simple notion that was cooked up on a camping trip to Big Sur by founders Marsh and Jan Mokhtari. They were humbled by California’s stunning beauty, feeling lucky to be on its rocky coast, surrounded by ancient trees and the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. Looking out past McWay Falls at the turquoise sea, they saw a gray whale and its calf on their own road trip up north — a trip gray whales have been making for more than 30 million years. Every bottle of Gray Whale Gin supports Oceana, protecting and restoring the world’s oceans, so that gray whales will continue to make that epic journey for another 30 million years.
One percent of all Gray Whale Gin sales go to environmental causes, including Oceana — the largest organization in the world solely devoted to marine conservation.

When a coastal storm is approaching, I start to get excited about the opportunity to photograph large surf. Often, the large surf is accompanied by gray, featureless skies and driving rain, which is not the best scenario for photographing waves. This spring morning, as the storm had passed, the sun popped out and the surf was still churning — a perfect combination for a colorful, dramatic photograph. CS
