Chronicling Change IN HIS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW BOOK, ISLAND LIFE, PHOTOGRAPHER JAY FLEMING DOCUMENTS THE WATERMEN AND THE STUNNING, NATURAL BEAUTY OF SMITH AND TANGIER ISLANDS — AS THEIR LANDS AND LIVELIHOODS DISAPPEAR

T

he environment, culture and economies of the Smith Island, Maryland and Tangier Island, Virginia — the Chesapeake Bay’s last two inhabited offshore islands — are intimately documented through the lens and dedication of Annapolis-based photographer Jay Fleming in his second book, Island Life, set to be released on October 21. Island Life is equal parts informative and aesthetically pleasing as it reveals the beauty and perils of a life dependent upon the rhythms of the tide and the harvests of the Chesapeake Bay. Since his first trip to the islands, in 2009, Fleming has seen remarkable changes to the islands’ landscape and communities. Cemeteries are washing into the water, while acres of marshland are disappearing, and the populations are in decline. Fleming felt a sense of urgency to document the islands’ iconic working waterfronts, as the very forces that sustain them also threaten to take them away. Smith and Tangier Islands were initially settled as remote farming communities in the early 1800s, and when the Chesapeake’s oyster fishery grew by the middle of the century, the islands populations increased. The islands became a perfect place for watermen to access the productive oyster and crabbing grounds in Tangier Sound and the mainstream of the bay. In modern times, working the water has become less dependable as the economy and environment changed causing many island families to abandon their ancestral homes for life on the mainland. Island Life captures a moment in time for the islands and the remaining residents — many of whom can trace their lineage to the islands’ original British settlers — as they stand strong in the face of an uncertain future.

Born and raised in Annapolis, Jay grew up with an affinity for the water. He discovered his passion for photography at the age of 13, after inheriting his father’s hand-me-down Nikon film camera. After graduating from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2009, Jay spent four years working in the field of fisheries, first for the state of Maryland and later for the National Parks Service in Yellowstone National Park. He then worked in the seafood industry, dedicating his time to promoting sustainable fisheries and the consumption of locally sourced seafood. In 2015, Jay turned his attention to photography full time, leading to the publication of his first book, Working the Water, in 2016. Since then, Jay has spent his career chronicling the unique people and places of the Chesapeake Bay. Jay also leads photography workshops to Smith, Tangier and other coastal communities to share the treasures of these locations with fellow photographers. “Aside from my workshops, I spent as much time on the islands as I possibly could, often for weeks and months at a time. I traveled to the islands during all times of the year to document the seasonal fisheries and capture a sense of place even during the harshest conditions,” Jay said. “I made the trip to the islands so many times that they started to feel like my second home. Of course, getting to the islands was no easy task. The process of packing my gear, towing the boat down to Crisfield, Maryland and running across Tangier Sound took the better part of a day, and was a clear reminder of the challenges that come with living in an isolated island community. “Through it all, I was motivated by a deep desire to capture a moment in time for these incredible islands, as the very forces that sustain them also threaten to take them away.” Jay continued. “Since my first trip to the islands more than a decade ago, I have witnessed remarkable changes to the islands’ landscapes and communities. Though only miles from the mainland by boat, Smith and Tangier seem worlds apart from the life that many of us know. I hope the photographs that fill the pages of this book give you the same sense of awe I had when I first stepped foot on the islands, transporting you to the Island Life.” Island Life includes 280-pages of photographs as Fleming shares an intimate understanding of island life through the relationships he has built with Smith and Tangier’s islanders over more than a decade. The country club’s waterfront lawn and show field will feature rare, prewar European and American coach-built automobiles, as well as important postwar sports and touring cars. Beach, Amelia Island, Boca Raton and Radnor Hunt. Founded in 1910, Talbot Country Club holds the prestigious distinction of being the oldest continuously operated golf-and-social club on the Eastern Shore. It lies on an idyllic setting, along the banks of Trippe Creek near Oxford, locally known as the New Hamptons, and was once home to the very first U.S. Naval Academy. Enhancing the mood in the tradition of historic Concours events held in Paris, the event will be complemented by an elegant fashion show and a display of classic

wooden speedboats moored at the pier along the show field. The exclusive VIP and entrants gallery will feature a gourmet garden party, with live music, flowing Champagne and culinary delights. Through generous sponsorship dollars and tax-deductible donations, St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance provides automotive educational assistance to like-minded young people of the mid-Shore through its sole nonprofit beneficiary, the local student chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America, at Coventry Motor Works in Easton. The SMCDE executive committee is unanimously committed to funding this budding initiative to provide hands-on vocational learning to train and educate students in the maintenance, care and restoration of classic motorcars. Discounted general admission and VIP tickets may be purchased online. A limited number of VIP tickets — which include a special parking permit, gourmet lunch and exclusive entrants’ gallery access — are also available for advance purchase. Center of Democracy SALISBURY UNIVERSITY’S EDWARD H. NABB RESEARCH CENTER EXPLORES VOICES AND VOTES: DEMOCRACY ON DELMARVA THROUGH HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS, AUDIO RECORDINGS AND ODDITIES Story and Photography by Melinda McPeek

PLAYFUL POLITICS The Nabb Center’s exhibition Voices and Votes: Democracy on Delmarva includes a fascinating collection of memorabilia, oddities and ephemera from national, state and local political campaigns, including a William McKinley soap baby and a Jimmy Carter wind-up peanut.

34

CoastalStyleMag.com • Sept/Oct 2021

Expressions of democracy and community engagement have taken many forms throughout Delmarva’s history. From grievances about Colonial taxation to the struggle for voting rights, participation in civic life is an integral part of the region’s past and present. Salisbury University’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center explores these topics in the new exhibition Voices and Votes: Democracy on Delmarva. Historical documents, images and artifacts from the Nabb Center’s collection bring to life stories of rebellion, resistance and perseverance that have shaped democracy on Delmarva. Learn how the Wicomico Women’s Club helped keep milk safe from tuberculosis by lobbying for regulation, why former Governor J. Millard Tawes traveled to Brazil under the direction of President John F. Kennedy, and the role Eastern Shore native Nannie Melvin played in helping women gain the right to vote. Some of the items featured in the exhibition include a 1795 letter to Caesar Augustus Rodney from William Peery that provides a glimpse into the emergence of our nation’s two-party political system, audio recorded on the streets of Cambridge, MD, as the civil rights movement unfolded, and 19th-century glass ballot boxes and party ballots used in local elections.

Also on display will be a sampling of ephemera from the Nabb Center’s Nutters Election House collection, which consists of more than 2,500 objects and archival items from national, state and local political campaigns and showcases the breadth and richness of political history on the Delmarva peninsula and beyond. It also includes must-see campaign oddities, such as McKinley’s soap baby and a Jimmy Carter wind-up peanut. In addition, several local area museums and libraries contributed stories and artifacts from their collections. Voices and Votes: Democracy on Delmarva will be on display in the G. THE REHOBOTH ART LEAGUE UNVEILS A SERIES OF EXHIBITIONS DESIGNED TO INSPIRE, PROVOKE EMOTIONS AND CREATE A RENEWED CONNECTION WITH NATURE AND ALL ITS POSSIBILITIES

The Wonders of Watermedia Through September 26, 2021 The Delaware Watercolor Society (DWS) is hosting a juried showcase at the Reboboth Art League. This year’s Rehoboth Art League DWS Fine Art Exhibition is being juried by Christine A. Heyse, a Signature Artist Member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, Delaware Watercolor Society and Potomac Valley Watercolorist. DWS is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Rehoboth Beach focused on exploring, creating and sharing the wonders of watercolor and aqueous media with new, emerging and professional artists from Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. An opening night reception took place in the Reboboth Art League’s Cockran Gallery.

SEEING IS BELIEVING Autumn Spendor, above, and Henlopen Pines, right, are two of Jan Crooker’s works that will be featured in September.

More Beyond Through September 26, 2021 s the Pandemic loomed and forced artist Jan Crooker into a more solitary life, she began to recall the places she could not personally visit and began to paint them from photographs of her travels. “As we live in Pennsylvania, even our home in Delaware and the Art League were off-limits. Our trips to California and England had been canceled and I began to visualize the landscape I could not revisit,” she recalled. “Painting the places that restricted me allowed me to idealize already beautiful places. Having my art helped me focus on the positive in this difficult time, and see that there was More Beyond my immediate situation to push my skill to a higher level.”

Interpretations of Nature October 1-October 31, 2021 For the past 50 years, Bill Patterson has been actively involved in the arts. He received his formal training from Rowan University, the University of the Arts, and Studio Incamminati, in Philadelphia. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and a Master’s Degree in Teaching. Bill taught art for 30 years in the New Jersey public school system. During his tenure, he mentored many students who became art educators, as well as hobbyists in oil painting and drawing. After retiring from public education, Bill moved to Delaware and concentrated on landscape painting. He has participated in local outdoor art shows and has given workshops at all of the local art leagues throughout Sussex County. His studio is at his home on Round Pole Bridge Road, and he is currently teaching adults at The Studios on Walnut in Milton. “By being a visual artist, I have the opportunity to capture the qualities that I find in the natural landscape,” Patterson said. “It is exciting for me to interpret and share these findings with the public. My work is not about grandiose vistas, but rather my reactions to the unique qualities of the many places that I have visited. It could be about lighting, color, movement or the moods that I sense when I view a scene — and it gives me great joy to share the splendor of the natural world.”

ppropriating photographs from W.E.B Du Bois and Thomas Calloway’s Exhibition of American Negroes (1900) into various 3D images, McAfee attempts to provide alternative ways to see Black figures, ways that allow the subjects to have multitudes of possibilities, real and imagined within a still image. In McAfee’s stereoscopic series, the reimagined images provide a less static and more inexplicable depiction of the individuals, breaking down their image to reveal red and blue versions that play with the act of viewing and perception. Shifting positions while viewing the images allows the audience to view them in a state that is in flux, opening up an engagement that is physical and pictorial and aims to redefine normality. “The brain did not evolve to see the world the way it is — the brain evolved to see the world in a way that was useful to see in the past. We inherit perception…” states Dr. Beau Lotto. As essential and urgent as it was for the Exhibition of American Negroes to redefine the depiction and understanding of middle-class Blacks in Georgia to combat racist depictions and ideas, McAfee’s photographs are continuing that legacy of setting alternative precedents of what is expected. With various options for interacting with these representations, McAfee adds to the cycle of upgrading our perception of others that could start a constructive shift in biases and assumptions that would be passed on, crafting new legacies. Dr. Kurt Wehberg returns to TidalHealth Thoracic, robotic services expand into Delaware Cardiothoracic surgeon Kurt Wehberg, MD, has returned to TidalHealth to lead its new cardiovascular surgery practice in Millsboro and expand its lung cancer screening program into Delaware. “It feels like I am coming home,” Dr. Wehberg said. “I am looking forward to bringing more services to Sussex County.” Dr. Wehberg, who first joined TidalHealth in 2001, was an integral part of the growth and success of the organization’s award-winning cardiothoracic surgery program, now approaching its 50th year. He will be offering an enhanced level of care, specializing in robotic thoracic surgery, at TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford. A renovation and expansion of the operating suite there was recently completed, so Dr. Wehberg and other specially trained surgeons will have access to the newly installed and revolutionary da Vinci Xi® surgical robot, a first at TidalHealth Nanticoke. Robotic surgery allows smaller incisions, translating to faster recoveries and shorter hospital stays. It provides surgeons pinpoint accuracy, dexterity and control, which means patients experience less tissue damage, less pain and exceptional outcomes. TidalHealth was the first to offer Delmarva patients the benefits of robotic surgery with the installation of its first daVinci system in 2007. 42

CoastalStyleMag.com • Sept/Oct 2021

Dr. Wehberg and other providers at the new Millsboro practice will also be part of TidalHealth’s ongoing weekly and multidisciplinary thoracic lung clinic to determine the most appropriate and comprehensive treatment plan for every thoracic patient under their care. The program includes thoracic surgeons, interventional pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, research nurses and social workers, and provides patients with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities. “The multidisciplinary conferences will be systemwide,” Dr. Wehberg said. “Experts from across the organization will be part of care discussions for patients.” The multidisciplinary clinic has been a game changer for patients with lung cancer at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, and TidalHealth is proud to expand this service to its Allen Cancer Center in Seaford. For more information, visit tidalhealth.org.

PROMOTIONAL SECTION

Should you be screened for lung cancer? TidalHealth offers lung cancer screenings with the use of low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan. This test is offered to people at a high risk for lung cancer. Using much less radiation than a typical CT of the chest, it can detect small nodules, which are not seen on a screening chest x-ray. Those at high risk who are eligible for screenings include those who: • Have a 20 pack-year or more smoking history (A pack-year is smoking a pack of cigarettes per day for one year. For example, a person could have a 20 pack-year history by smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) • Smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years • Are between 50 and 80 years old

To learn more about the TidalHealth Thoracic Oncology & Lung Cancer Screening Program, or to make an appointment, call 410-543-7012 in Maryland or 302-297-2598 in Delaware.

PROMOTIONAL SECTION

World-class cancer care TidalHealth offers state-of-the-art equipment, treatment “This is technology often only seen at academic medical centers,” said Dr. John Mansueti, Director of Radiation Oncology. “We are so proud to have it here.” Precision accuracy with the new equipment is less than or equal to half of a millimeter and enables physicians to perform Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). SRS is a very precise and accurate high-dose treatment for brain lesions. SRS requires one treatment and is less likely to cause common side effects like short-term memory loss, which is typically permanent. Many patients who are diagnosed with advanced cancers such as lung and breast cancer are often at risk for brain lesions, which occur when the cancer travels by the bloodstream to the brain, where it is able to grow and escape the patient’s immune system.

If you’re coping with a cancer diagnosis you may feel overwhelmed, but one thing is certain: you do not need to travel far from home for world-class care. With treatment offered in Salisbury, Ocean Pines and Seaford, TidalHealth’s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute and Allen Cancer Center offer the most advanced care on the Shore. TidalHealth boasts an expanded research department that gives patients access to the latest clinical trials; surgical robots that improve precision and reduce pain; state-of-the-art radiation equipment that preserves healthy tissue and reduces treatment times; and a unified healthcare team that creates individualized care plans and embraces the latest treatment methods. For patients who require radiation treatment, TidalHealth is proud to have the PerfectPitch Six Degrees of Freedom Couch, which improves patient positioning accuracy, preserves healthy tissue and reduces treatment times.

44

CoastalStyleMag.com • Sept/Oct 2021

Thanks to the PerfectPitch Six Degrees of Freedom Couch, SRS is performed at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute Ocean Pines location, which brings cutting-edge technology to the community. “Almost every week, we are treating a patient with cancer that has either originated in the brain or spread to the brain,” Dr. Mansueti said. “Of those patients, a large percentage qualifies for this more accurate treatment.” For those who need surgery, TidalHealth uses the da Vinci Xi® Surgical System, which creates smaller incisions, leading to faster recoveries and shorter hospital stays. The Institute also offers immunotherapy, which allows the immune system to recognize and battle cancer. According to TidalHealth physicians, immunotherapy has shown positive results against many types of cancer, including melanoma, lung cancer, head and neck cancers, kidney and bladder cancers and lymphomas. To learn more about the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, visit tidalhealth.org.

PROMOTIONAL SECTION

Leading the way Clinical research, trials improve patient outcomes Cancer, heart disease, COVID-19 — whatever medical professionals at TidalHealth are fighting, odds are their work is assisted by the Richard A. Henson Research Institute.

Beginning with Remdesivir, dexamethasone, convalescent plasma, and most recently aerosolized sargramostim, which repairs the tiny air sacs in the lungs, TidalHealth has been on the forefront.

Centrally located at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, the Institute supports the entire health system, making medical advancements and impacting the health and wellness of Delmarva residents every day.

Dr. Joyner said he’s blessed to work with such a dedicated team and couldn’t be more proud of their contributions.

“Working with industry and academic sponsors, we have brought state-of-the-science opportunities to the Eastern Shore, providing our physicians’ additional options in the care of the sickest of patients,” said Robert L. Joyner, Jr. PhD, RRT, RRT-ACCS, FAARC and Director of the Richard A. Henson Research Institute. The Richard A. Henson Research Institute facilitates access to clinical, translational, and educational research. Research efforts are carried out in three pivotal areas of care: innovative oncology, advanced therapeutics, and population health.

“It’s important to know that TidalHealth is unique,” he said. “We take the job of caring for our community very seriously, and we’re doing a great job.” If you are interested more in learning more about TidalHealth’s dedication to research, email research@ tidalhealth.org or call 410-543-7017. If you would like to participate in a clinical trial, talk with your physician. TidalHealth’s clinical research team works hand-in-hand with many doctors’ offices to help get patients into appropriate trials.

The Institute supports TidalHealth physicians and other care providers by expanding options for clinical care. Clinical research enhances the environments where the care is provided by strengthening the effectiveness of healthcare delivery throughout TidalHealth. The clinical research opportunities provided by the Institute are enriched through robust professional partnerships with the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network, the National Cancer Institute and targeted healthcare industry sponsors. The Richard A. Henson Research Institute has an important role in supporting TidalHealth’s mission to deliver world-class medical care to the community. That was the case throughout the pandemic as Dr. Joyner and his team worked diligently to bring clinical trials to the Eastern Shore, improving the outcomes for many COVID-19 patients.

‘It’s a remarkable accomplishment’ TidalHealth offers award-winning care “It’s a remarkable accomplishment for any hospital to be placed among the Best 250 of its peers — all sizes and specialties — at least once. To do that four consecutive years is extraordinary.” TidalHealth CEO, Dr. Steve Leonard, shared those words when accepting the 2021 Healthgrades America’s Best 250 Hospitals Award for TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, Md. Healthgrades reviewed nearly 4,500 hospitals in 21 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures, and regionally only TidalHealth Peninsula Regional reached the elite Top 5% of hospitals in the country when compared to all others. Since 2018, TidalHealth Peninsula Regional has been consecutively named one of the premier hospitals in the United States for superior clinical performance. No other hospital on the Delmarva Peninsula has reached this pinnacle during the same time, and just nine in Maryland did in 2021. “TidalHealth is better together because of our outstanding team of employees, medical staff and volunteers. Our Healthgrades clinical successes are a direct result of their dedication and devotion to every patient and family member under our care,” said Dr. Leonard.

Other awards: • TidalHealth Nanticoke is the recipient of the Healthgrades 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for the 5th consecutive year. This distinction places TidalHealth Nanticoke among the top 5% of all acute care hospitals in the United States for patient safety. Since 2017, it is the only Delaware hospital presented the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award.

46

CoastalStyleMag.com • Sept/Oct 2021

• TidalHealth Peninsula Regional has again been named a Best Regional Hospital on the Eastern Shore of Maryland according to U.S. News, the publisher of Best Hospitals. The magazine ranked the Salisbury hospital as the No. 8 hospital in Maryland. • U.S. News & World Report rated TidalHealth Peninsula Regional a “high-performing hospital” in the treatment of heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), knee replacement surgery, hip replacement surgery, diabetes care, lung cancer surgery, stroke care and colon cancer surgery. To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients. Pumpkin Pumpkins — which are technically a fruit — are members of the gourd family. And here’s a quick history lesson: They’ve been cultivated since about 3500 BC and are native to Mexico and Central America. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word pepon, which means “large melon.” While most people will use pumpkins as purely decoration, they’re actually chock-full of vitamins, minerals and water — 90% to be exact. A cup of mashed pumpkin serves up: • 245% of your daily value of vitamin A • 19% of your daily value of vitamin C • 16% of your daily value of potassium

THE DIAMOND MARRIAGE SYMBOL

Love. Honor. Cherish.

Squash Squash — also part of the gourd family — is one of the oldest-known crops recorded, estimated to have been planted 10,000 years ago in Mexico. Summer squashes — like yellow, zucchini and patty pan — are picked before they fully mature, leaving the skin still tender. Winter squash spends more time on the vine, which means thicker, sturdier, skin. These varieties — like butternut, acorn, spaghetti and kabocha — are a tasty fall treat when cooked.

Cinnamon boasts: • High levels of antioxidants, namely polyphenols, which have been shown by recent research to play a role in metabolism regulation, weight management, chronic disease prevention and cell proliferation. • Anti-inflammatory effects. Chronic inflammation is a contributor to many preventable medical conditions, and Sri Lankan cinnamon has been shown to be one of the most potent anti-inflammatory foods available. • Blood-sugar-lowering effects. These effects are twofold: Cinnamon has been shown to imitate the effects of insulin, as well as increase insulin sensitivity.

Turnips Turnips, which historically have not been very popular on the plates of Americans, are seeing a potential resurgence with the rise of pandemic gardening. This purple-and-white root vegetable is spicy when raw, but when they’re roasted or boiled, they develop a nutty, earthy flavor. Turnips are classified as a cruciferous vegetable, a group that also includes broccoli, cauliflower and kale. Cruciferous veggies are members of the mustard family and have plenty of nutritional benefits, including anticancer properties. One cup of cooked turnips packs 30% of your daily value of vitamin C and 12% of your daily value of fiber. Another perk — while the root is what’s normally eaten, you can also enjoy the greens on top, cooked like you would collard greens or kale. Cranberries Tart and refreshing, cranberries are a perfect addition to mulled wine, as a topper to a salad or a sauce on your Thanksgiving table.

We Know Insurance. We Know You. Local Focus. Global Reach.

They grow on a vine in areas called bogs, which are beds layered with sand, peat and gravel in wetlands. Cranberries are high in antioxidants, like phenols, plus anthocyanins, which are a compound that gives the fruit its dark-red color. Research has shown anthocyanins to have anticancer properties, as well as anti-inflammatory effects. Cranberries have also been shown to promote urinary tract health. One cup of raw cranberries has about 25% of your daily requirement of vitamin C and 16% of your daily requirement of the mineral manganese. And while you can eat them raw, they are quite bitter that way, so beware. CS

DANA BARTHOLOMEW DANA MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

Dana Bartholomew is an award-winning photographer with a host of accolades and vast client roster to her credit, yet she’s continually honing her craft by studying the infinite ways natural and artifical light can illuminate her subjects and influence her images. She’s a lighting specialist and shoots an array of subject matter — from weddings and family portraits to engagement photos and, her favorite, posing women, which allows her subjects to come out of their shells and gain newfound confidence. “While I can shoot natural light, I actually prefer to use artificial light in many situations, even outdoors,” Dana said. “I prefer not to be at the sun’s mercy when it comes to lighting at my portrait sessions, which also gives me the benefit of not being restricted to a certain time of day or place to hold sessions. While all photographers have preferences, utilizing artificial light gives me the ability to be more flexible with my photography and light my clients in a way that still looks very natural.”

“It’s like putting a puzzle together. Every client has a different story and different goals for their future home. Therefore, each scenario is unique, and we have to work together to figure out the best way to put the pieces together.” That’s what Shawn Hunt loves about the mortgage and real estate industries, where he brings more than 15 years of experience and a team who truly understand the market. McLean Mortgage Corporation broadened its corporate landscape onto the Eastern Shore two years ago and joined forces with The Hunt Team, which has been growing and shaping its team for the last decade. The Eastern Shore group of McLean Mortgage has grown to a group of 14 who are all considered “one big family,” according to Hunt. McLean Mortgage’s goal is to be a trusted advisor in Salisbury, Ocean City and the surrounding areas of the Eastern Shore. And clients see this with their involvement in the community. “I’ve heard the saying, ’If you find a job you truly love, you’ll never work a day in your life,’” Hunt said. “That’s what we are creating here. We are a local team where each member has the same goal and philosophy. We truly enjoy working with each client and have the honor of

assisting with one of the best and most important purchases of their lives.” Hunt also focuses on creating an atmosphere where clients feel comfortable talking about finances and life goals. “We are laid-back, and we want this to be a relaxed, enjoyable experience,” he said. “We try to take the pressure off and make sure clients understand the process.” They have state-of-the-art technology to optimize communication in the palm of your hands, but they also have brick-and-mortar locations in Salisbury and Ocean City for those who like to meet in person. That’s critical in today’s competitive real estate market, where there is more demand than available inventory, and listings are getting multiple offers. But McLean Mortgage focuses on more than the immediate transaction. Overall, Hunt and his team love an opportunity to teach and advise. “We work with people to build a long-term plan,” he said. The Eastern Shore team of McLean Mortgage Corporation is licensed to help you help you purchase or refinance your home in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Imagine a home-decor boutique brimming with vibrant, coastal-inspired treasures. Then imagine an ever-changing showroom stocked with comfortable, stylish upholstery, unique art, timeless accessories and gifts, fresh lighting, tableware, tile and textiles — because you’ll find all of that and more at Dwelling & Design, where owner Fiona Weeks brings a “fresh design spirit” and strives to never carry the same items found in other shops. Weeks has more than 30 years of design experience and opened her shop in Easton 16 years ago, after moving to the coast from Washington, DC. The business started with a quaint showroom and design office, and over time it expanded to two floors and the adjacent building. “People come in here to see color combinations, and we try to find new and different products all the time,” Weeks says. “We are always on the hunt.” Weeks loves designing interiors along the East Coast, adding that the laid-back decor and friendly personalities make her job a joy. Plus,

there are a range of styles that challenge her as a designer. “A lot of the homes are historic, and some are super modern, so it’s fun to have the juxtaposition of the two different styles because we’re always doing something different,” she says, adding that the breathtaking waterfront views are a dynamic backdrop for any design. And for Weeks, the ever-changing character of this region aligns perfectly with her goal to not be that cookie-cutter designer. “I want designs to reflect the individual and their home,” she says.

Training is an essential part of any dog’s life, and Lori Leonard, owner and head trainer of Dogs and Their Companions, has made it her mission to bring out the very best in your fourlegged friend. Lori, who proudly holds the title of Certified Professional Trainer (CPT) and has been training dogs for over 20 years, has always had a fondness for dogs. Even so, she did not always envision working closely with animals. Yet, a transformative moment in her life led her to the decision to open up her very own dogtraining service in November of 2001. At a time when she was struggling to live in harmony with her own dogs and was unable to find the help she needed, Lori decided to take matters into her own hands. She began attending dog-training school and, there, learned a wealth of knowledge that she would later use to train not only her own dogs but those from all over the Delmarva Peninsula. Lori, who is honored to have been voted “Best Dog Trainer in Sussex County,” is also blessed

to have a family and children who love to be involved in her work life. In fact, over the years, Dogs and Their Companions has become a family affair. Lori’s husband, Steven, and their three young children, Kinsley, William and Steven Jr., assist her with her work. Both Kinsley and William have also recently been named “Dog Training Assistants” and will be sharing the job as colead trainers for upcoming children’s classes. Today, Lori and her team remain committed to promoting everlasting harmony between you and your beloved pet. She would like to assure both current and future clients that she will do everything in her power to make sure you have what you want in the end. Between obedience and socialization classes, Special Beginnings Puppy School and more, each program and service can be tweaked according to you and your dog’s needs. Visit Dogs and Their Companions and learn to live in harmony with your furry friend.

Tilghman Orthodontics is known for providing high-quality orthodontic care and innovative, cost-effective solutions for creating beautiful smiles. A few years ago, Tilghman Orthodontics began offering its patients a treatment option that provides healthy smiles at more affordable prices. It’s called Smiles Correct, and it has been successful for hundreds of patients who have benefited from this in-house venture using 3D printing technology. Tilghman Orthodontics prints models that represent the incremental changes needed to shift patients’ teeth and then fabricates its Smiles Correct aligners from those models. Dr. Tilghman points out that mail-order aligner trays have no direct doctor supervision, X-rays or clinical exams. The Smiles Correct aligner trays are a cost-effective option created with oversight from experienced Drs. Michael Tilghman and Carrie Schwartz, who provide care, direction and guidance with each step of the treatment.

The Smiles Correct treatment option is a convenient choice for patients who have had previous treatment, like braces, but now need additional adjustment. Because they’re made at Tilghman Orthodontics, patients have saved thousands of dollars on treatments. Although offering a cutting-edge solution like Smiles Correct is one option, other patients may need a more traditional approach to orthodontic care. Dr. Tilghman notes that “the majority of our young patients still need traditional treatment, with braces.” Tilghman Orthodontics refuses to provide a one-size-fits-all approach to its patients’ needs. The care provided is practical and focuses on providing the best, most appropriate treatment for each patient. Quality care, experience and cost-effective solutions are what sets Tilghman Orthodontics apart from other practices in the area. Now, with the success of Smiles Correct, the tools have become sharper and more innovative in providing individualized solutions for its patients.

Looking for a groomer you can trust with your furry friend? Look no further than Wags to Riches, a pet salon and mobile-grooming service taking Sussex County by storm. Owned and operated by founder Kerrie Jones, Wags to Riches offers only the best to you and your beloved pet. In addition to its mobile service, where you can choose to have your pet groomed from the comfort of your own home, Kerrie and her dedicated team of eight groomers also extend the option of on-site grooming at the business’s salon in Selbyville. There, customers are given the unique opportunity to groom their pets at the self-wash station if they choose. According to Kerrie, Wags to Riches is the only pet-grooming service in the surrounding area that offers a self-service salon and mobile grooming in one identity. More often than not, pet-grooming services work behind closed doors, hiding their work from the public eye. Wags to Riches chooses instead to foster an open environment, where customers are given the freedom to keep an eye on their pets as they are groomed. Safety is also of utmost priority for both Kerrie and

her team. For this reason, each mobile and salon groomer is certified in pet first aid and CPR. Kerrie recognizes her team’s uniqueness and believes each person to be hard-working, loving and patient — rather important qualities to have when working in the pet-grooming business. Since its establishment in 2006, Wags to Riches has had no shortage of fanfare. In 2014, the business won the “Women Entrepreneurs of the Year” award from Delaware Today, followed by the “Dog Gone” award for the top-10 grooming services in the entire state of Delaware in 2020. Now, the pet-grooming service happily adds the award of “Best Pet Grooming Service in Sussex County” from Coastal Style to its long list of honors and distinctions. Kerrie owes it all to her clients who continue to support her and with whom she has been lucky enough to build such strong relationships over the past 15 years. The Wags to Riches team will continue to serve their community of pet lovers day in and day out as they make your pet’s health, safety and wellbeing their top priorities.

Longboard Cafe’

LONGBOARD CAFÉ 6701 Coastal Highway Ocean City, MD 21842 443-664-5639 LongboardCafe.net

Rick Vach is a self-described serial entrepreneur. The owner of Longboard Café in Ocean City has been at the wheel of several successful ventures over the past 32 years, including Vox Pop, a national advertising display/fixture company; The Avalon Market, a gourmet store ahead of its time for the area that he calls his “proudest achievement”; and Island Time Café, a Sunset Island eatery that became so popular, the kitchen had to be expanded twice during his tenure. When provided the opportunity to open an anchor restaurant in the new Midtown Shopping Center on Coastal Highway and 67th Street in 2013, Rick felt the timing was perfect. Conceptually, he envisioned Longboard Café as a “surf-rat bar,” featuring burgers, tacos and craft beers. When the buildout was complete, the decor was more elevated than he anticipated, and as his core demographic and reputation rose simultaneously, Rick added a high-level, full-course dinner program to his operation, which continues to earn accolades for its evolving creativity, fresh, locally sourced ingredients and delectable flavors. “Today, we’re a tough table to get and we’re thrilled to be at that level,” Rick said. “Our menu

has grown substantially, and we’ve developed a regular customer base that frequently dines with us from as far as Bethany and Rehoboth. We always look forward to seeing our seasonal regulars when they’re in town, too.” Longboard Café is also known for its pub-fare staples, such as its award-winning burgers, tacos and chicken wings, and of course, it’s mustexperience happy hour. The restaurant’s warm, relaxed environment makes it an ideal choice for a date night, business meeting or family night out. This year, in addition to winning Best Chicken Wings, Best Lunch and Best Salads, Rick was named Best Businessman in Worcester County by the readers of Coastal Style — an honor he quite humbly appreciates yet very openly states that the majority of the credit for it should go to his dedicated and talented staff. “Our team, from the kitchen to the front of the house, is amazing,” Rick said. “Our industry has obviously been through a lot lately, and we weren’t immune to it, but our staff is wonderful, and they work their rear ends off. I couldn’t be prouder of them, and I value them so much that we recently instituted a 401K and profit-sharing program.”

The real estate market has produced substantial profits for buyers in recent years, and property values continue to soar at record rates. But reaping those rewards is not as easy as sticking a “For Sale by Owner” sign on one’s front lawn. Buying and selling real estate is very expensive, often the largest investment made in one’s life, and navigating its complexities, unfamiliar terms and clauses, and mountains of contractual legalities can be downright overwhelming. That’s why locals, second homeowners and investors have trusted Charles C. Powell Realtors of Cambridge and Easton for nearly 50 years. Known as the “Locals’ Realtor,” Powell Realtors knows the local real estate landscape inside and out — and never charges technology, administrative or other fees like its competition. The only income realized by a Powell Realtors agent is their commission following the successful closing of a transaction. “We are known for the care we place in handling of all aspects of real estate transactions for our clients,” said broker Valerie Powell Brown. “We possess a wide knowledge of what it takes to get to our client to settlement and always

deliver meticulous attention to its paperwork.” Since taking over the family business, Valerie has modernized Powell Realtors significantly and leverages real-time market data and technology to optimize the homebuying and selling process for its clients. The company’s website is a comprehensive resource for buyers and sellers, which showcases current listings, provides search tools for available properties, includes educational sections specifically for those selling their residence or purchasing a listing. It also features engaging and timely blog articles about the current trends of the market and advice on how best to navigate them, as well as detailed information about the mid-Shore towns and counties of Maryland and Delaware. “We are committed to providing our clients and customers an awesome real estate experience, using our years of knowledge, experience and all multimedia platforms to find them the home they want or to sell their property,” Valerie said. “But our secret weapon has always been, and always will be, our fantastic team of Realtors. No one brings more energy and passion to Eastern Shore real estate than Powell Realtors. We love our jobs!”

Once, accountants were recorders of history — signatures at the bottom of a tax return, the calculators of depreciation. But today, the business of accounting is much more. PKS & Company, P.A., Certified Public Accountants and Advisors to Business, bridges the gap between generations with an ever-evolving approach to managing clients’ accounting and financial-planning needs. “We are proactive advisors and business partners, versus historians,” said Daniel M. O’Connell, CPA/PFS, CVA, managing partner. “We become part of our client’s team of advisors. They turn to us regularly to solve everyday problems. We’re in constant communication with our clients, not just once a year.” It is this approach to client service that’s been integral to PKS for decades. Founded in 1978, its size and scope – with offices in Salisbury, Ocean City and Lewes – does not subtract from its ability to personally address the needs of clients, some of whom have been part of PKS’ clientele for generations. PKS is structured strategically to remain

small enough to offer prompt, individualized service yet large enough to provide an inclusive, sophisticated array of services to its clients. The company’s range of expertise extends to many industries and entities that are central to the Delmarva economy, including healthcare, hospitality, government, agribusiness, condominiums and HOAs, construction, professional services, food service and restaurants, nonprofit organizations and others. Noting a need among its clients for sound financial-planning advice, PKS established PKS Investment Advisors LLC in 1999. It’s a core belief at PKS that the coordination between financial plans and tax plans benefits clients with a service unique to financial planning. The PKS family of financial advisors provides fee-based advice, solutions and strategies for individuals, families, businesses, estates, trusts and partnerships. As a registered investment advisory firm, PKS adheres to a strict fiduciary standard and provides advice with the client’s best interests in mind. The firm is legally bound to act in its clients’ best interests and has done so since its inception.

During the pandemic, Eric Johnson, PhD, identified the mental health struggles people were experiencing and knew the community would greatly benefit from a practice that takes a neuropsychological approach and focuses on identifying and managing stressors. With a background in clinical forensic neuropsychology — and as a former radiologic technologist — Dr. Johnson brings his medical and hospital experience to improve mental health outcomes. The practice, which has been growing significantly, celebrated one year in business on July 10. Mental healthcare can be abstract, Dr. Johnson says. While talk therapy can play an important role, Compass Mental Wellness Services uses science-based interventions, “taking it one step forward,” with treatment planning that involves different types of psychotherapy, so clients can learn about their conditions, moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. They learn to take control of their lives and manage challenging situation with healthy coping skills.

By teaching skills to retrain the brain, Compass Mental Wellness Services helps clients relax stress responses. As Dr. Johnson points out, “Traditional counseling is 60% effective, but based on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) research, when psychotherapy relaxes stress responses, outcomes can increase by 40%.” “We’re living in a high-stress time, and our brains are only designed to handle so much,” Dr. Johnson adds. Compass Mental Wellness Services is here to help, also offering massage therapy and hypnosis. The practice is strongly connected to the community and understands its residents’ needs. The team at Compass is like family, and they’re proud of the care they can provide as a group.

Three generations and 73 years later, Megee Motors is the trusted boutique car dealership in Sussex County that focuses on service, relationships and community. Floyd Megee opened the first dealership selling Studebakers, and while this make is now history, Megee Motors is a premier Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram partner with a great selection of inventory. Still, the dealership maintains its hometown feel and knows customers by name. “We have sold vehicles to three or four generations of families,” said Matt Megee, son of owners Vanessa and Terry Megee, who bought the dealership from Terry’s father, Floyd. Matt works in sales, service and parts. Their daughter Lindsay has worked as a salesperson, finance manager and title clerk. Megee Motors has evolved over the years, but its commitment to family and community values is a constant — and why customers choose to do business there. Megee Motors is a main sponsor and contributor to the Harry Kay Foundation, which supplies backpacks and pantry items to local schools. It supports the Boys and Girls Clubs, youth leagues, the local hospital and community college. Megee Motors is also a family business for

families. Aside from the four Megees currently working there, other employees share the workplace with their loved ones. “It’s like extended family,” Vanessa said. “We have long-term, 10-plus-year employees here with us, and that’s a significantly high retention rate in our industry.” Megee Motors is a fulfilling career path for many. A key salesperson who has been with the business for more than 20 years started out washing cars in the detail shop. “Most of our people have grown with the business,” Vanessa said. The business is always evolving, too. It once offered the original Chrysler Grand Wagoneer, and now the next generation of this vehicle is being released as a specialty utility vehicle. The Jeep Wrangler has gained features that make it a luxurious ride. Terry Megee added, “Our coast is unique for fishermen, and we sell a lot of Jeeps to those customers, so that is exciting for this area.” Dodge Ram trucks are now like “traveling offices,” Vanessa stated, relating that these rugged vehicles have luxury features that high-end SUVs include. Above all, the family is proud of being a staple of a community where locals appreciate their support as a stakeholder and value their service and product.

Owner-operator Chef Paul Suplee directs a broad spectrum, multi-restaurant group, which covers the gamut of dining — from sandwiches to barbecue to world-class fare. Specializing in hand-cut meats, fresh seafood and fullservice beverage programs, the boxcar family of restaurants not only satisfies the tastes of the most discerning palates but is well positioned to continue its growth and trend-setting ventures across the Shore. Chef Paul and his team at the award-winning boxcar40 in Pittsville serve up delicious food that’s part Southern cuisine, part barbecue and part just-plain-scratch cooking featuring hand-cut steaks and seafood — all from inside the former volunteer fire department’s headquarters. Its smoked meats are a must-try specialty. Chef Paul’s newest restaurant, in downtown Berlin — boxcar on main — is earning rave reviews in “America’s Coolest Small Town.” The Pompeii Oven is the first thing you’ll notice when you walk in, with its warm flames jumping in the back of the cooking vessel. There’s just something special about roasting food in a

brick oven — Chef Paul says it’s superb. With an elevated wine list and a bourbon “ego alley” that boasts a Pappy 10, it’s safe to say you’ll enjoy a truly unique dining experience that feels like Charleston at boxcar on main, too. Boxcar crafted events, Chef Paul’s awardwinning catering division, was voted Best Catering Company in Worcester County by the readers of Coastal Style for 2021. Its mission is to execute events in which their client feels like a guest at their own party. With a penchant for innovation, the finest ingredients and warm hospitality, boxcar crafted events has quickly become one of the Eastern Shore’s premier caterers. As a full-service catering company, they offer professional staffing, bartending services, rentals and event coordination. “We’re an ambitious, hard-working team that’s dedicated to our craft,” said Chef Paul, who has 35 years of industry experience to his credit. “Our singular goal is to provide our guests with the best experience possible. It’s a commitment we take extremely seriously — and I think that’s evident in our restaurants each and every day.”

KARI STORY, FIRST HOME MORTGAGE 6200 Coastal Highway, Suite 301 Ocean City, MD 21842 443-664-2490 KariStory.com

Kari Story is nearing another milestone in the mortgage industry. Next year, the Ocean City branch sales manager of First Home Mortgage will celebrate 20 years of playing an instrumental role in helping firsttime homebuyers, second homeowners and real estate investors acquire lending for their properties at the resort. During her successful career, Kari has facilitated thousands of loans in Maryland and Delaware and setting records along the way. In 2020, Kari financed more than $72M in mortgages for her clients. For Kari and her team, positive outcomes are predicated on genuine customer service and the knowledge and understanding of each of their objectives. “We are committed to improving the quality of life for all of our customers and employees,” Kari said. “We do this by providing superior customer service and by seeking to understand the needs of our customers.” This year, Kari was voted Best Mortgage Specialist of Worcester County by the readers of Coastal Style for the eighth consecutive year — an accomplishment that very few

professionals across the Shore can claim. Yet, for as gratifying the individual honor is for Kari, she’s most proud of her team winning the Best Mortgage Team award each of the four years it’s been a part of the readers’ poll. “These awards mean so much to us, especially because the votes are coming from people in our community. We are so grateful for all those who trust us with their business,” shared Kari. Kari and her team’s continued recognition is also an extension of their ability to underwrite and secure the most competitive loans, as well as their attention to detail, infinite industry knowledge and dedication to firstclass customer service. Further adding to the impressiveness of the team’s accomplishments is the fact that they are currently an all-female team, which is relatively unheard of within the largely male-dominated home-lending industry. When asked to what she attributes her group’s success, Kari responded, “We’re in a stressful business, but we find a way to make it fun, and our small team really feels like a family. I think our clients really see that.”

It’s green, clean and a growing division of 61-year-old family business Cato Gas & Oil. As Wicomico County’s Best Propane Provider of 2021, Cato is committed to environmental stewardship and the community, with customers ranging from nurseries to residents who appreciate the reduced greenhouse emissions, energy conservation and cost savings propane offers. The propane side of the business has been growing for 23 years. Commitment to the community is a value Cato Gas & Oil prioritizes, said Phil Tonelli, vice president of residential sales and services. In spite of the company’s growth, it stays in close touch with its customers, many of whom have depended on Cato for 25 years or longer. Sometimes, clients simply stop in to chat with the Cato Gas & Oil team members, whom they consider friends. As a locally operated company, Cato Gas & Oil is pleased to offer quality service at a

fair price. But it is most proud of the people who are on the team, who truly care about serving customers. Relationships are what matter the most. That includes supporting the community with efforts like participating in fundraisers for the March of Dimes and American Cancer Society. The propane division of Cato Gas & Oil is a tight-knit group of about 15 propane team members, with 500 employees overall. Said Tonelli: “We all row in the same direction, and every one of us is willing to step up to help.” In fact, during the pandemic, Cato Gas & Oil didn’t miss a beat, and as construction continues to grow, and more people recognize the clean nature of propane, he expects this renewable, affordable energy to continue catching on. “It’s very versatile,” Tonelli said.

A factory-trained team of technicians who are dedicated to learning in an ever-changing industry is why customers depend on Coastal Comfort. “Our team of professionals is customer-service-focused, designing home-comfort systems to meet the needs of our customers,” said Lacey Coleman, the Salisbury-based company’s CEO. That’s why “Evolve” is one of the company values — along with integrity, passion, service, performance and paying it forward. “When you learn, you teach,” Coleman says. “When you get, you give.” The company has received the Carrier President’s Award several years in a row, was an MCE Entrepreneur of the Year and is Coastal Style’s 2021 Best of HVAC winner. The business focuses on delivering professional service. “We are committed to continuously evolving to better serve our clients across the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware,” Coleman says.

SUSSEX COUNTY

It’s a family recipe that’s tried and true, been passed down from one generation to the next and has produced more than a half-century of success. And yet, there are just a few simple, but vital, ingredients the Hockers infuse to each person’s shopping experience at their independent, fullservice grocery stores. “Most important is that we care about our customers, and we strive to provide them with the best-quality of products, competitive pricing and genuine service,” said Melissa Hocker-Willey, a third-generation employee of the family business and the company’s corporate secretary. “Our dependable, hardworking team is dedicated to providing our customers with quality service. Our 275 employees are a part of our Hocker family, with several having been with us for more than 40 years.” The final ingredient is an unwavering commitment to providing its loyal customers with the freshest and finest meats and cheeses, fresh, local produce, and of course, its legendary and award-winning fried chicken.

Since 1983, Embrace Home Loans has been helping homebuyers and homeowners get the financing they need to buy a new home, refinance an existing mortgage or consolidate high-interest debt. Customer satisfaction is always their highest priority, which is reinforced by its 4.9-star Google rating. Branch manager Jason Cook leads the Ocean City/Rehoboth Beach area team of 13 highly trained industry professionals, who collectively have one mission: To create the perfect home loan uniquely designed for that client’s specific needs and goals. “We want our borrowers to feel at home from the very start,” Cook said. “From day one, a dedicated loan officer will explain every step, provide options and help find the loan that’s best for them — and we’ll be by their side through closing day.” This high level of commitment and care has been reaping benefits for their clients. In 2020, Cook’s team closed 60% of purchase loans within 21 days, and nationwide, the company closed 13,708 loans. “We are on track to surpass that goal this year,” Cook said.

LOST AT SEA

LEGENDARY SPANISH SHIPWRECKS OFF THE COAST OF ASSATEAGUE ISLAND HAVE PRODUCED MYSTERIES, DEATH, TREASURE, CONNECTION TO ITS FAMOUS HORSES AND EVEN A LANDMARK INTERNATIONAL COURT BATTLE THAT REACHED THE U.S. SUPREME COURT Story by Ian Post | Assateague Artifact Photography by Marci Ryan

fi

ust off the coast of Assateague Island, historic shipwrecks have left behind rare remnants of the past. After an international legal dispute that eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court, some of the artifacts that washed up or were recovered from the sea are now on display at the Assateague Island National Seashore Visitor Center. In August 1750, an Irish captain, Daniel Huoni, led the La Galga in a fleet of Spanish ships that were headed from Cuba to Spain when a hurricane struck them. Near the coast of Virginia, Huoni tried to enter an inlet on Assateague Island that no longer exists and ran aground. While some soldiers, sailors and English prisoners on the ship tried to swim ashore, several dying in their attempts, Native Americans soon rescued the La Galga crew in canoes. Along with the La Galga crew were Spanish horses, which, if legends are true, could be the ancestors of Assateague’s famous ponies. Word about

treasure and goods near shore quickly spread across Colonial Worcester County and, while a load of mahogany and some other things were salvaged, a storm soon hit the ship, causing it to break up and disperse into the sea. Fifty-two years later, the Juno was sailing from Veracruz, Mexico, to Spain, making stops in Cuba and Puerto Rico to board soldiers of the Spanish Third Battalion of the African Regiment, their families and civilian officials. With more than 413 people aboard, as well as $500 million in silver pesos, the Juno hit October storms near Bermuda that caused leaks in the hull and damaged other parts of the ship. When a U.S. ship, the Favorite, came to help, seven Spanish soldiers boarded the vessel to assist with the rescue, and slight repairs were made to the Juno’s rudder. However, late at night and into the early morning, the Juno and over 400 people tragically sank into the misty waters just a few miles from the coast of Assateague Island.

HISTORY

Occasionally, Spanish coins and other treasures wash ashore on the Atlantic Coast and on Assateague Island, including pieces suspected to come from the Juno, like the bell a fisherman dragged up in 1987 and later an anchor in 1989. Earlier in the 1980s, Hidden Galleon author John Amrhein Jr. used archival research to track down the La Galga shipwreck site, near the MarylandVirginia border. But those seeking to salvage the shipwrecks, like entrepreneur Ben Benson in the 1990s, require high-tech equipment and bureaucratic approval. In 1996-97, Benson’s company, Sea Hunt, used a decommissioned Coast Guard vessel and received guidance from Chincoteague local Earl Novak to search the sixsquare-mile ocean bed that the Virginia Marine Resources permitted them. During their search, the hull of the Juno appeared on their devices a mere 1,500 feet from the beach, and the wreckage of the La Galga was reportedly found nearby. When their discoveries were reported, however, an international legal dispute ensued. According to the 1902 Treaty of Friendship and General Relations between the U.S. and Spain, shipwrecked sovereign vessels from either nation needed to be expressly declared “abandoned” or else they remained in possession of their home nations. Using this treaty and the Abandoned Shipwrecks Act, the Kingdom of Spain sought help from U.S. courts to prevent Sea Hunt from claiming the contents of the shipwrecked Juno or La Galga. From 2000 to 2006, the case was argued and appealed in court, eventually reaching the Supreme Court, which didn’t take up the case and instead upheld the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision: The salvage of the shipwrecked Juno and La Galga were not expressly abandoned and thus belonged to Spain. In fact, the case, Sea Hunt v. Kingdom of Spain, is considered precedent internationally and has since been used to prevent treasure hunters from salvaging sovereign shipwrecked vessels.

LOST AND FOUND La Galga, depicted in this centuries-old Spanish drawing, was a 50-gun frigate commissioned into the Spanish Navy in 1732. She left Havana, Cuba, on her last voyage, on August 18, 1750, in order to escort a convoy of merchant ships to Spain. On August 25, 1750, the convoy encountered a hurricane near Bermuda that scattered the ships and forced them westward toward the American coast. La Galga eventually sank off the coast of the Maryland-Virginia border. Bill Hulslander, Assateague Island National Seashore’s chief of resource management, examines what is believed to be some of her historic artifacts.

Thankfully, the National Park Service (NPS) and Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports reached an agreement in 2006 to lend the artifacts recovered from the suspected Juno and La Galga wrecks for display in the Assateague Island National Seashore Visitor Center. Included in the free public display are an impressively tall anchor, a spoon and bottle that hint at life aboard the ships, wooden and metal fragments, and colonial Spanish coins — some with mint markings remaining and others that have been smoothened by the sea. And while experts will argue over whether Sea Hunt discovered the actual Juno and La Galga sites, the fact remains that shipwrecks lie all over the Chesapeake and the Eastern Shore’s Atlantic Coast, with more local and international treasures waiting to be discovered. HISTORY

STORIED PAST

For one week in October, museums, such as the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum, and historic sites throughout Worcester County will pull out all the stops to share with visitors the rich and complex history of the region.

CoastalStyleMag.com • Sept/Oct 2021

DAYS OF YESTERYEAR Postcards of old Ocean City depict a time when its beaches and Boardwalk weren’t nearly as crowded as they are today.

Written by Ian Post Photography and imagery courtesy Worcester County Museums Consortium

T

housands of years ago, Native Americans from Algonquin tribes, such as the Pocomoke, were the first people to inhabit the land that has become Maryland’s coastal county. The storied threads of Worcester County history follow back to this time, woven by people who sought refuge or fortune in Colonial Maryland, were captured from Africa for slave labor or remained here even when many Native Americans were forced to flee west. From Whaleyville to Ocean City, Pocomoke City to Bishopville and everywhere in between, people have continued to work and enjoy the land and water here, sharing traditions and arts and stories over the centuries. To help explore this heritage, museums and historic sites across the county offer exhibits and events throughout the year. Visitors will find engaging stories in places like Furnace Town and the Julia A. Purnell

Museum, in Snow Hill; the Sturgis One Room School Museum and the Delmarva Discovery Center, in Pocomoke City; the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum, in Berlin; and the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, on the boardwalk. While the history is old, “new” historic sites, like Rackliffe House, have joined the celebration of Worcester County’s history in recent years. While it can be easy to forget that such rich histories surround us, for one week this year, cultural organizations across the county will be pulling out the stops for the community to interact with our heritage through some incredible special events. There will be theatrical and musical performances, enlightening tours, entertaining presentations, a photo competition and many other festivities. Don’t miss out on History Week in Worcester County, hosted by the Worcester County Museums Consortium.

F

ort Miles was built as a coastal defense against German naval attacks during the early days of World War II. Over the past 20 years, the Fort Miles Historical Association (FMHA) and Delaware State Parks has restored Battery 519, turning it into a museum, with the mission of telling the stories of Delawareans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Oil Still Bleeds exhibit celebrates the FMHA’s recent acquisition of a 650-lb relic from the USS Arizona, sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 — the event that brought the U.S. into WWII. The addition of the Arizona relic to the museum creates a “bookend” to the collection’s USS Missouri 16-inch gun barrel, under which the documents of surrender were signed with Japan, ending WWII. This makes Fort Miles one of few museums with significant artifacts from the very beginning and end of WWII.

With its current production of the Oil Still Bleeds exhibit, Fort Miles is poised to kick off a major capital campaign to elevate itself as a world-class museum. The exhibition space in the Fort’s North Gun Room has been designed to evoke a sense of reverence and solemnity for the sacrifices made by U.S. servicemen at Pearl Harbor and during WWII. In all, 1,177 men died and are entombed within the hull of the Arizona, which is both a war grave and a national memorial. and current-day underwater footage of the sunken wreck of the Arizona is projected. The space is filled with the underwater sounds of the lagoon. Flanking the relic are two large touchscreen maps of the island of Oahu, Hawaii, where Pearl Harbor is located. Touching different areas of the maps brings to life the stories of 23 Delawareans stationed on the island on the day of the attack. Period photos and archives allow visitors to experience the event through the eyes of these heroes and learn where they went on to serve in WWII.

Information about their hometowns in Delaware and personal biographical information is also provided. The “forgotten heroes” came to Pearl Harbor from Rehoboth Beach, Milford, Laurel, Millsboro, Cheswold, Frederica, Hollaway Terrace, Smyrna, Newark, Wilmington and Wyoming. The map also tells the stories of women and people of color from Delaware during WWII. Previously held back by institutionalized sexism and racism, new opportunities became available during the war when jobs traditionally held by white men, now fighting on the front lines, needed

to be filled. Women went from auxiliary positions to having full military benefits, and men of color saw the formation of an officer’s training program. Wall panels chronicle the historical context of USS Arizona relic: the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; the battleships of Pearl Harbor; activities back home at Fort Miles during WWII; and challenges faced by Japanese Americans who tried to relocate to Sussex County after internment. Following a brief preview opening, the exhibit will be on public view through Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2022. More than 30,000 visitors are expected. The exhibit will be accompanied by a host of events, many to benefit veterans’ organizations, and include a meet-and-greet for families of the Delaware heroes featured in the exhibit, a “Stories of Diversity” lecture series in early 2022 and a day of service performed by local school children to benefit Delaware’s homeless veterans. Public and private tours of the exhibit will be offered. CS

HISTORY

Letters from Pearl Harbor

Story by Joe Willey | Photography by Pamela Aquilani

J

im Deakyne was an eyewitness to a turning point in American history and within days was writing letters to his mother back home in Delaware, describing what he experienced. When others of his generation raised the cry of “Remember Pearl Harbor,” he did. He always remembered. He is one of 23 Delawareans featured in a new exhibit called Oil Still Bleeds, presented by the Fort Miles Museum in Cape Henlopen. The new exhibit commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, which caused America’s entry into World War II. Deakyne was in the Army and stationed at Schofield Barracks, north of Pearl Harbor. Hawaii was an idyllic location. Sparkling Pacific waves lapped against the white beaches as tradewinds skipped clouds across the blue skies that canopied the island. As an inveterate letter writer, he shared his experiences of living in the middle of paradise. But the content of his letters changed after he heard surprising noises outside of the mess hall on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941.

HISTORY

At first, everyone thought it was a U.S. military exercise. But then they watched in horror as bombs fell, and they heard the crackling of machinegun fire from the attacking Japanese aircraft. Deakyne ran to his position on a nearby artillery gun, firing frantically at the strafing planes. The first letter he wrote after the attack was on December 9, and it contained details about the infamous day. All the men were encouraged to write letters home, telling their families what happened but not to reveal military secrets. His letters were upbeat and written to assuage his mother’s worry. He confirmed that it was a surprise attack, but “the good old USA wasn’t asleep.”

Jim Deakyne survived the Pearl Harbor bombing unscathed, but while working on a damaged high-voltage power line, he suffered a severe electrical shock. The spikes strapped to his legs and feet that helped him climb utility poles seared into his flesh. He stayed in Honolulu for nine months and received multiple skin grafts. When his military service ended, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Delaware.

ENDEARING CONNECTION Jim and Rickey Deakyne spent a day reminiscing with Fort Miles’ Oil Still Bleeds exhibit curator Heidi Nasstrom Evans of Horizon Philanthropic Service in Lewes.

HISTORY

PRECIOUS KEEPSAKES Jim and Rickey Deakyne keep mementos from their father’s time in the service close to their hearts.

Deakyne’s mother saved each letter her son wrote, eventually relegating them to a box in a storage shed that was once a chicken coop. They remained there, unopened for 40 years. After Mrs. Deakyne died, in the early 1980s, the house was sold. The buyer found the box and returned it to the family. After all the years, the letters were read once again. The letters he wrote are treasured by his sons, Jim and Rickey. They proudly show them and share fond memories of their father. They remember that he grew up poor during the Depression and always hated to waste anything. Though he never graduated from high school, he had beautiful handwriting, as the letters testify. They remember his tremendous fear of electricity. But they also know that even after being diagnosed with cancer, which would end his life, he had a sense of humor and was peaceful until the end. “When Dad died, he handled it with so much grace,” Jim said. It is common for a person of Deakyne’s generation to have witnessed much yet remain stoic about their deeds. A quiet sense of duty and humility is evident. But the past speaks through letters like the ones written by Jim Deakyne…

THEY QUIETLY SAY,

“Remember, always remember.” 122

SPECIAL FORCES BROTHERS RICK AND ROB DANZI POSSESS AN AMAZING COLLECTION OF VEHICLES, BUT THE ARMY VETERANS’ ASSORTMENT OF MILITARY JEEPS HOLD PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE Story by Joe Willey Photography by Grant L. Gursky

conic objects are more than the sum of their parts. They capture the birth of an era and the spirit of struggle, survival and adventure. For two brothers in Selbyville, Jeeps are among those objects. Their collection is proof of how the name has evoked passion for generations. As boys, Rick and Rob Danzi were fascinated with Jeeps. But their excitement was fueled in their early teens, when their dad purchased a 1949 CJ-3A model. It was beautifully utilitarian and used to pull mowers over their property. (By the way, the Danzi brothers’ lawnmower was also a Jeep.)

HISTORY ON WHEELS The Danzi brothers have been fascinated with Jeeps since childhood, buying and selling them since the 1970s. About 10 years ago, however, they narrowed their focus such that they began collecting military Jeeps, especially those from the WWII and Korean War eras.

In the 1970s, they began buying Jeeps to fix and sell, starting with 1952-1953 model years. It was fun. But 10 years ago, they narrowed their focus and began collecting military Jeeps. They were the simple, straightforward, olive-drab versions that populate grainy old photos from World War II and the Korean War era. These rough-and-tumble vehicles were as indispensable to the American military as M-1 carbines. These Jeeps saw it all. The Danzi brothers are humble regarding the inspiration and purpose of their Jeep collection. They see the Jeeps’ history as a part of their family story. Their father served during World War II, as a lieutenant colonel in the Army 636 Tank Destroyer Battalion, and was wounded three times.

SOURCE OF PRIDE The Danzis are delighted to share their collection of military Jeeps with the community, rolling them out with pride while honoring the past as part of Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day celebrations. The earliest Jeep dates back to just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

126

CoastalStyleMag.com • Sept/Oct 2021

Later, Rick and Rob both served in the Army; Rick was in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in 1968. It seems Jeeps run in their blood. The Jeep collection is a survey of the history of an icon and specifically focuses on the 1940s and 1950s military Jeeps. The earliest in the collection dates from February of 1942, just a few months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It features a slat grill, unique to Jeeps made during this early period of production. The Danzis have installed a machine gun and mount that is true to the period — a reminder of how useful Jeeps were in combat. This collection does not sit idle. The Jeeps are driven and shared with the local community on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day parades. These parades have always commemorated the American experience and honored the men and women who served. The Jeeps are a tangible, rolling, noisy reminder of that history. Buying and restoring military Jeeps as a way to commemorate the past may not have been the impetus for this collection, but they have done that nonetheless. Their interest, expertise and desire to see others enjoy what they have worked hard to assemble has been their engine, and just like the iconic Jeep, the Danzi brothers just keep on rolling. CS

Cheeseburgers

in Paradise?

A RELOCATED PHILADELPHIAN ATTEMPTS TO FIND A CHEESEBURGER AND A SENSE OF BELONGING AT EASTERN SHORE RESTAURANTS Story and Photography By Meredith Lindemon

fter spending my entire adult life in Philadelphia, I joined the urban exodus last November and traded Center City for the bay side of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Stuck inside for months, eating whatever was left on grocery store shelves, I was just thrilled to be able to go to an actual restaurant. All I wanted was a cheeseburger and a pint of beer — and to find my new, local bar in this new place. What could go wrong?

A

aware was happening or being directed to an electrical plant and threatened with human trafficking or being given an “offthe-books” waitressing job I didn’t ask for by someone at some bar who told me they were involved racketeering, I started to understand that being a stranger in a strange land is a lot like attending your own funeral: You get to see yourself as just a body in a room that’s probably going to get thrown in a hole.

all of these do, but that’s not what’s most important. Beyond that, there’s the vibe of the place itself: How does the space I’m sitting in make me feel? Then, there’s what happened while I was there: Are the things that people say to me, or direct at me, reasonable things to say or do to any paying customer who comes in alone and doesn’t initiate contact with anyone, pays for their meal and tips at least 20 percent? And the beer has to be a solid good.

Over the last nine months, as I tried to find my new regular, I expected I’d also find my element somewhere along the way — belonging being the typical result of time spent anywhere. But as I learned about “from-heres” versus “come-heres” versus “chicken-neckers,” and the length of time it takes to become an Eastonian, I wondered about the category I’d find myself fitting into.

Living in Philadelphia for 20 years, nothing shady ever happened to me, not even in the dingiest dive in some alley under the Blue Line, so I guess my naivete led me astray in this new endeavor. But after a few disappointing situations, I developed a set of criteria to serve as my guide and an indicator as to whether or not I should set foot in any particular establishment in the first place. If you’re a newcomer to this place, this might help you find your category.

I traveled to a number of taverns, bars, restaurants and dockside establishments, looking for what I’m trying to find in this staggeringly beautiful place I now halfgrudgingly call home. I did not include those that might have been the sites of any of the aforementioned totally bonkers stuff.

When enough trips that started with a burger ended in something totally bonkers, like being thrown out for causing a fight I wasn’t

First, the burger needs to taste good, and

And while I have not yet managed to accomplish what I set out to do, sometimes it’s the unintended results that are the better part of any undertaking. In my case, that means becoming a vegetarian.

Where I Found

My Places, All Around The Eastern Shore Restaurant: Robert Morris Inn Location: Oxford Vibe: Like my grandmother’s house, if it were a tavern staffed by 16-year-olds; comfortable enough to strike up a conversation with staff without it turning weird. Order: Premium Beef Burger Price: $20 Toppings: Aged cheddar cheese, smoked bacon and jalapeño aioli, lettuce, tomato Sides: Bleu cheese apple coleslaw, Old Bay potato chips or shoestring fries Burger notes: The beef was charred and slightly crispy, and I could kind of taste charcoal or understand the idea of it; the aioli captured the essence of bacon and the pepper without tasting like its own separate entity. This is the second-best burger I’ve eaten on the Eastern Shore, right behind Bill’s Prime. Beer: I had a mimosa. While I was there: I arrived on an off-season Sunday, at the tail end of brunch, which was an annoying thing for me to do, so I expected a bit of frostiness from the staff. I did not get it though. Mike, the bartender that day, genuinely seemed not to mind that I was having brunch at 2:30 p.m. (incidentally, he’s from Philly, a veteran of Starr Restaurants). On a return visit, I met owners Ian Flemming and Mark Salter, who were as welcoming as the rest of their staff.

THE ROUND UP CONTINUES ONLINE Meredith is just getting started on her quest to find the best burgers on the Shore. Head over to CoastalStyleMag.com to find more reviews for Maryland and Delaware hot spots. Be sure to come hungry!

ROBERT MORRIS INN Premium Beef Burger

Restaurant: The Galley, St. Michaels Location: St. Michaels Vibe: Casual American with light wood and sunshine; relaxed but please eat and GTFO. Order: Galley Burger Price: $19 Toppings: American sharp cheese, grilled onions, tomato, applewood-smoked bacon, avocado, house secret sauce Sides: Chips or salad Burger notes: Somehow, the burger is a schematic of Galley’s interior decor. The beef was fresh — and I don’t know if it’s possible for something to taste healthy, but this tasted like health. I asked to hold the bacon, so maybe that’s the reason. Beer: I had a really elaborate Bloody Mary with a ton of garnish. While I was there: The bartender, Stacy, is something of an iron fist in a velvet glove. I was there for a weekend brunch right at the end of off-season, and the outdoor seating area was packed with visitors ordering bottles of wine. Stacy was the glue here.

Restaurant: St. Michaels Crab & Steakhouse Location: St. Michaels Vibe: Nautical meets brick, low ceilings and shipping barrels, where locals hang at the inside bar. Order: The Larry Price: $17 Toppings: Provolone, sautéed mushrooms and onions Sides: Fries Burger notes: The Larry is named after a regular, who liked his burger with these toppings, cooked to a medium-rare. Incidentally, this is my favorite preparation for a cheesesteak. Beer: Try Saint Michaels Ale. While I was there: I went on a peak-season Friday at dinnertime, and the outdoor bar and tables both were pretty open, which I thought was surprising for St. Michaels’ busy time of year. The owner, Eric Rosen, asked me a lot of questions and requested that I shoot a miniature of flavored vodka, which he said is his thing.

SUICIDE BRIDGE Surf & Turf Burger

Restaurant: Awful Arthur’s Location: St. Michaels Vibe: Covered- and open-patio outdoor seating set back from Talbot Street in a garden-style arrangement where I don’t feel hurried or in the way. Order: Angus Burger Price: $12 Toppings: Cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion Sides: Fries Burger notes: Something about Awful Arthur’s makes me happy to eat their food. Their burger is charred and cooked to the preferred temperature and tastes fresh. I like the minimal fuss on top. Beer: Try a Kill Devil Cocktail: a draft beer with an oyster and a teaspoon of cocktail sauce. While I was there: Owner Arthur Webb is hospitable and welcoming, and his staff seem to share the same attitude. Restaurant: Suicide Bridge Restaurant Location: Hurlock Vibe: Busy, large, family-friendly, dockside dining establishment and event space with riverboat cruises and a smaller, woodpaneled bar off to the right of the main entryway. Order: Surf & Turf Burger Price: $20 Toppings: Suicide’s crab dip, jumbo lump crabmeat, cheddar cheese Sides: Fries, chips or coleslaw Burger notes: Swallowing my dislike of the crab, I swallowed part of this burger. The beef tasted fresh and was cooked to a medium-rare temperature, the combination of cheese and crab and the creaminess of the dip did not turn out to be too much happening at once. Beer: Try Suicide Ale by Suicide Bridge, an American Amber Ale. While I was there: Not a ton of staff attention, which is understandable because the place is huge and super busy. On an early-peak-season weekday at noon, the parking lot is full.

RAR BREWING Chessie Deluxe

Restaurant: RAR Brewing Location: Cambridge Vibe: Skateboard/street-art-inspired brewpub with cartoony large-scale wall art, trying not to take itself seriously while making a conscious effort to be the only place around here that looks like this. Order: Chessie Deluxe FOXY'S HARBOR GRILL Price: $8 Angus Burger Toppings: American cheese, pickles, lettuce, onions, RAR sauce Sides: Kettle chips Burger notes: The two smash-style patties are the good kind of greasy, which doesn’t turn the bun into a wad of sticky mush; the RAR sauce (horseradish, catsup, mustard and mayo) makes this the best smash burger I’ve eaten on the Eastern Shore. Beer: RAR Brewing’s Quartz Banger Imperial IPA is pretty drinkable considering its 8.4% ABV. While I was there: I went on a weekday toward the end of afternoon. The bar had a reasonable amount of activity, and I was left totally alone to eat, drink my beer and not be hassled. The bartenders are super chilled out, and the whole vibe of the place reminded me of Philly about 10 years ago, which is to say that it was a nostalgic afternoon that I enjoyed. Restaurant: Foxy’s Harbor Grill Location: St. Michaels Vibe: Plastic tables on a cement patio by the water, with live music and beers in cans. Feels like Wildwood, N.J. — but that’s a good thing. Order: Angus Burger Price: $10.50 Toppings: Customizable; mine came with cheddar, bacon and avocado Sides: Kettle chips, black-bean salad, coleslaw Burger notes: The burger here is as good as Galley St. Michaels, minus the taste of health. Beer: Eastern Shore Brewing’s Summer Crush Orange, a fruited NEDIPA with a 10.7% ABV, goes from sweet to rank real quick. Try Flying Dog’s Raging Bitch IPA instead. While I was there: I think someone I was talking to scoffed at this place. I really like it. The management is really friendly and professional, and it’s a fun time for people maybe five or 10 years younger than me who want to have fun while they’re here before they head back to wherever they live full-time.

HAMMY’S HIDEOUT The Big Mark

Restaurant: Hammy’s Hideout Location: St. Michaels Vibe: Basic bar/restaurant with a beagle theme and bartenders who are friendlier than elsewhere in St. Michaels. Order: The Big Mark Price: $14 Toppings: Cheese, special sauce, onions, pickles, lettuce Sides: Seasoned fries Burger notes: Surprisingly, it did taste like a Big Mac Beer: Eastern Shore Brewing’s Bones Pale Ale is exclusive to Hammy’s. It’s watery, and I recommend the Mudslide milkshake, which tastes exactly like it sounds. While I was there: This is a great place to go if you want to be left alone in St. Michaels. Restaurant: Rude Burger Location: Easton Vibe: A bit like Shake Shack Order: Rude Burger Price: $13 Toppings: Customizable, with choice of cheese and choice of side for an upcharge Sides: Rude fries Burger notes: Smash style done a bit on the medium side of well, greasy in a greasy way. Beer: If you want to get whacked, try a bourbon slushie. While I was there: Walked up to the register, ordered my burger, then reported to a picnic table in a plastic-enclosed area and ate half my burger before getting up to leave. I think it was around 3 p.m. on a weekday.

COTTAGE CAFE "Poffen" Burger

Restaurant: Cottage Cafe Location: Bethany Beach Vibe: Waterfront restaurant and pub Order: “Poffen” Burger Price: $12 Toppings: Lettuce, tomato, onion Sides: Fries Burger notes: I did not eat this burger, but I was told this is a guest favorite. Beer: Union Anchor Ale, brewed in Baltimore, has a 5% ABV. While I was there: Jodi, the manager, is perhaps the most pleasant individual I’ve encountered in this quest. Will, the bartender that night, was very fun to talk to—right up until my leg got stuck to the barstool as I was attempting to dismount.

Restaurant: Longboard Café Location: Ocean City Vibe: “Casual surf-themed bistro” Order: Longboard Burger Price: $15.50 Toppings: Provolone, bacon, horseradish crema, lettuce, onion, medium-fried egg Sides: Pasta salad or mixed greens Burger notes: I did not eat this burger, but I was told this is the burger Longboard Café is known for. Beer: Burley Oak Brewing Co, whose Bilsner is brewed with pilsner malt and toasted wheat with a 4.2% ABV. While I was there: I emailed a Realtor about finding a place in Ocean City. That’s how enjoyable I found this entire experience. Also, the bartender told me that a lady comes by after close to pick up leftover food to feed local cats. Restaurant: Liquid Assets Location: Ocean City Vibe: Bar/restaurant/bottle shop off Ocean City’s main drag Order: Wagyu Burger Price: $18 Toppings: Cheddar, pickle relish, beer mustard, chipotle catsup Sides: Fries Burger notes: While I did not eat this burger, the mustard, pickles and catsup are made in-house. Beer: Try DeweyBeerco’s Secret Machine, a fruited sour brewed in Harbeson.

BILL'S PRIME SEAFOOD & STEAK Smokehouse Burger

Restaurant: Bill’s Prime Seafood & Steak Location: Chincoteague Vibe: Longstanding, local, family-friendly, sit-down restaurant with friendly staff and owners Order: Smokehouse Burger Price: Off-menu Toppings: Cheddar, crispy onion, bacon, lettuce, tomato, barbecue sauce Sides: Fries Burger notes: I made a five-hour round trip for this off-menu creation. Cooked to a rare-medium-rare, the crispy onions and barbecue sauce do something magical to the bacon. This is the best burger I’ve eaten on the Eastern Shore. Would I drive five hours for it again? Yes. Beer: Cape Charles Brewing’s Assateague Island IPA has a 7.2% ABV and tastes like pineapple at first, then pine. This beer is delicious, and I’d drive five hours for it, too. While I was there: I ate three cheeseburgers and talked to owner Steve Potts about the price of crabs. Restaurant: Johnny’s Tavern Location: East New Market Vibe: Super-chilled-out local tavern where people are friendly and concealed carry is permitted Order: The Works Burger Price: $13 Toppings: Provolone, bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, mayo Sides: Fries Burger notes: This burger is enormous. Cooked more on the well side of medium, the mushrooms make it: They aren’t slimy and shriveled from being over-sauteed. Also, I took this burger home with me, and it was as good the second day as it was the first. Johnny’s Tavern has achieved the impossible. Well done! Beer: RAR Brewing’s Country Ride Pale Ale has a 5.8% ABV. While I was there: Two American flags with a flatscreen playing Divorce Court in between, and plenty of pool tables. There’s bar seating, with high-tops and booths in the back. Bartender Brian is courteous and professional, and bar patrons are quiet, friendly and relaxed. Of all the bars I’ve visited on the Eastern Shore, this is my favorite. CS

‘Healthify‘ Your Game Day ADD THESE THREE APPETIZERS TO YOUR PLAYBOOK Recipes and Photography by Nicole Davis and Sheila Konen

Fall can only mean one thing — game days are back! And what’s football without some delicious food to watch it with? Many game-day classics, like nachos, hot dogs and sliders, are heavy on the carbs and fat. And while there’s nothing wrong with indulging, serving up some lighter and more nutritious options isn’t a bad idea either. Here, we’ve put together three healthy game-day snacks to serve at your next shindig. They’re all easy to make and will be even easier to eat. Try the flatbread topped with smoked trout spread in place of pizza — this option, made with protein-packed, omega-3-rich smoked trout and fresh herbs, freshens up traditional cheese and sauce. As an alternative, swap in sweet-potato chips with honey-mustard dipping sauce if you have a hankering for chips and salsa. Sweet-potato chips offer a healthy serving of vitamin A and fiber, while the zippy honey-mustard dipping sauce is packed with flavor. Finally, if dips are your speed, the white-bean-and-garlic dip delivers big taste in few calories. With these appetizers on your roster, you’ll be winning — even if your team isn’t.

“This brand was created to inspire and motivate our next generation to believe in themselves, to understand that they’re choices need to be made with responsibilities, and that even at their young age, they have the power and the ability to make a positive difference in someone’s world every single day,” Bryan said. “I also know that there are young people in our neighborhoods, our classrooms and on our playgrounds and athletic fields suffering from anxiety, depression, phobias and other disorders that are deeply troubling and often go unnoticed. I want to generate awareness and help establish a network of outreach programs designed to provide them with the mental, emotional and spiritual support that could help make a difference in their lives, while they’re still young.”

Why does behavioral health matter so deeply to Bryan? The statistics are staggering: • By age 14, 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness commence. • One in every five children between the ages 13-18 has or will have a serious mental illness. • 70% of children and adolescents in state and local juvenile systems have a mental illness. • The average length between the onset of symptoms and intervention is 8-10 years. “My passion is to create high-quality products that appeal to all ages,” Bryan said. “My mission is to help young people who are suffering from mental illness. By combining my passion and my mission into the YDI brand, I hope to make a difference in the lives of these children.” CS

esting in place during the pandemic prompted the Wilner family to take the leap and buy the Delaware beach house they’d dreamed about for some time. The timing was just right, with children ages 9 and 12, and a mind to make memories with family and friends. “We visited Ocean View four years ago, and we fell in love with this little spot, where there is a marina, and we knew they’d be developing there,” said Genevieve Wilner, who cofounded Feather Hill Interiors with the firm’s other principal designer, Ashley Mutch. “We bookmarked it, and we did end up buying a lot.” The five-bedroom beach house was completed with builder-grade finishes, so Wilner and Mutch took the project as an opportunity to infuse a clean, coastal vibe into the home, giving it a livable-luxury feel, with thoughtful, highimpact upgrades, like hardware, faucets, lighting, a backsplash and shiplap. “When we meet with new clients, we emphasize how much lighting can transform a space,” Mutch said of making small changes that deliver significant aesthetic results. Working texture into fixtures with organic, woven elements infuses interest to the design. And finishes like draperies can make all the difference, Mutch said. “It adds that additional layer, texture and warmth to a space.”

MEMORY MAKER After the town of Ocean View left its indelible mark on the Wilners, they purchased a lot in a new development and built a beautiful beach home to spend quality time with children, family and friends.

An Elevated & Approachable Kitchen As with many family homes, the kitchen is a hub for cooking, dining, gathering and kids’ activities. To elevate the space, the island legs were replaced for a modern piece with a brass cap that ties in with upgraded fixtures. “We wanted to evoke a feel that was coastal but refined,” Wilner said, adding that pendant lighting and trading the white subwaytile backsplash for tile in muted cream, heather, camel and ivory adds subtle, sophisticated interest. Meanwhile, barstools with woven seats and wooden legs add warmth and texture. “The kitchen is where family and guests gather, and at any given time, we have a whole bunch of pastries on the counter and local fruits and vegetables from one of the farm stands,” Wilner said.

Coastal Comfort for Living Spaces Clean, coastal and casual comfort are the focus of main living areas, where Mutch and Wilner sourced performance fabrics that are easy to care for while focusing on a palette of white, beige and pops of black. Realistic faux greenery along with white-plaster pieces, like lamps and tables, lend a natural feel that is ideal for the home’s views of the Indian River inlet. The neutral tones carry throughout the main living areas, and consistency with custom linen draperies connects the spaces. Eclectic pieces add character, such as a hand-woven accent pillow from the mountains of Peru. “The dining table we had admired for some time,” Wilner said, remarking how the woven chairs make the space feel “more casual and relaxed,” juxtaposing a formal table base. “We finished it off with a beautiful Serena & Lily chandelier,” Mutch added.

Sleeping In Style The four upstairs bedrooms afforded a place to have even more fun with this renovation project. The bunk room includes nautical sconce lighting, which is a hit with the kids. “We did go a little more over the top with the decor because it’s a kid’s space, and we wanted them to feel like they are on vacation and at the beach,” Wilner shared. The pineapple room, meanwhile, is playful, with a whimsical print and clean, white beds. As for the master, Wilner and Mutch worked within a small footprint. “We had to keep it tight, so we chose to make the impact with design,” Wilner said. “We kept it neat, with art and mirrors on the wall for decor, and brought in some features like stunning, alabaster lamps and finished it off with shiplap, for that in-the-cover feeling.”

A FAN OF CLASSIC, RESORT-STYLE CONSTRUCTION, CUSTOM BUILDER DAVE BRADLEY FOUND THE IDEAL SPOT OF HIS OWN ON BAYSHORE DRIVE — AND CREATED A PRIVATE, PERSONAL PARADISE FOR HIM AND HIS FAMILY

Story by Alison Pappas Photography by Grant L. Gursky

A longtime admirer of 1890s Ocean City design, Dave Bradley of Bradley Construction decided he wanted to pursue more projects in the area. In particular, he always found himself especially drawn to the aesthetics and uniqueness of the town’s Coast Guard and Life-Saving Station Museum buildings. This inspired him to incorporate this design style into many of his residential remodels and new-build projects. Two years ago, Dave set his sights on the most western unit of the Bayshore Drive community of downtown Ocean City. He immediately realized the unit’s potential and knew it would make an ideal residence for himself and his extended family, who often visit. Dave soon broke ground and pulled from his wealth of experience, attention to detail and natural creativity to pull off an epic transformation. “Corner units are hard to come by in Bayshore, so I knew I had to jump on it when it became available,” shared Dave. Because Dave had completed past projects in the Bayshore community, he was already familiar with the general landscape of the units, although corner units are generally larger and therefore allow for broader transformations.

MASTER MAKEOVER Dave Bradley’s redo of his two-story residence on Bayshore Drive includes driftwood-colored flooring throughout the premises with matching ceiling beams.

“When I started this overhaul, I knew I wanted to pick up a Key West flair but still pay homage to the Ocean City architecture,” said Dave. The Key West ambience is certainly achieved through the palm trees and strikingly blue exterior, which pairs well with the fun spirit of Dave’s red 1958 Corvette, which is often parked outside. While Dave was always seeking an enticing exterior paint color that was not overly eye-popping, it was his late mother’s affection for blue hues that inspired him to eventually pick the bright turquiosey blue exterior that stands today. The property’s makeover was largescale in nature, and Dave chose to convert it into a true two-story unit with four bedrooms and three full baths. The entry door, which was previously located at the front of the residence, now resides on the right side of the home for added privacy. Dave preserved the property’s high exterior ridgeline, and he incorporated Coast Guard-esque hangar fixtures as a tribute to the local architecture. The interior contains driftwoodcolored flooring throughout with matching overhead beams. The kitchen’s white cabinetry aligns well with the white stainless-steel appliances and soft, gold hardware. The seafoam backsplash tile ties in the property’s coastal setting and resembles a sparkling mermaid tail. The kitchen space also includes a dining area with a six-seater wicker table and wet-bar area. Adjacent to the dining space is a living area that delivers stunning views of the bay. In addition to the views, another focal point of the open room is an authentic Murray fighting fishing chair.

“I pulled that chair off of my old boat and worked with a local craftsman to restore it,” said Dave. “Now, it serves as a fun chair that guests love to sit in as they soak in the waterfront view.” The first floor also houses a master bedroom, with a desk area that overlooks the community street areas. The driftwoodcolored beams carry into this room and add to the coastal ambience. The second story provides additional bedrooms and bathrooms. To make the right bedroom — with high vaulted ceilings — even more appealing to his grandchildren that often come to visit, Dave built a captain’s ladder leading to a loft space. This loft area offers the grandchildren a fun space to enjoy endless hours of playtime. An additional spacious bedroom includes several large windows and a balcony overlooking the bay. What once served as a third-floor interior, now is a top-floor party deck that is perfect for entertaining guests and sunbathing. This party deck includes lounge chairs, hanging swing chairs, a firepit and, of course, spectacular overhead views of the bay. The bottom outdoor floor features additional lounge seating and a boat dock. While this unit’s astonishing transformation required a great deal of planning and work from the Bradley Construction team, Dave’s thoughtful and detailed approach led to a spectacular final product. It now serves as his primary residence and a place where his family can come together. CS

WITH THE WATERS OF OCEAN CITY AT ITS FRONT AND BACK DOORSTEPS, A COUPLE’S RESIDENCE MAXIMIZES ITS SETTING, THANKS TO KEITH FISHER OF FISHER ARCHITECTURE

I

n 2009, Keith Fisher, a Shore transplant originally from Philadelphia, founded the local, award-winning architecture firm Fisher Architecture. Today, Fisher Architecture is a 15-person company with a full interior design department. Recently, the firm took on a 4,000-squarefoot residential new-construction project on Old Landing Road in Ocean City. “I’ve worked with the homeowners on commercial projects in the past, but this residential build was wildly different and very unique,” shared Keith. Like he does with all the projects his firm undertakes, Keith applied a very hands-on approach and was extremely involved from start to finish.

“We really make the process personal and invest a tremendous amount of time to understanding every project we do,” shared Keith. “For us, it’s about being a good listener. We get to the root of what the client is trying to accomplish, by focusing on listening to their requests and understanding how they’d like to use the space.” For the homeowners, whose primary residence was previously in Salisbury, the most important elements were that they wanted to be able to appreciate the surrounding views; they also wanted the home to be usable for years to come, and they wanted all of their guests to feel included no matter where they were in the house.

EASY COME, EASY GO The easy access, egress and en-suite guest bathrooms in the house make for a resort-like feel.

HOME

With the project now complete, all three of these initial requests were achieved due to Keith’s diligence, flexibility and precise planning. The gray-exterior residence stands tall, at three stories, and it contains five bedrooms, two garages, an office, two laundry areas and several living spaces. Perhaps one of the most impressive architectural accomplishments is that the waterfront views can be seen and enjoyed from every room of the house. The front of the home directly overlooks a canal, and you can glimpse Assawoman Bay from the front porch. “I like to have my morning cup of coffee on the porch and enjoy the coastal panoramas, especially the straight-shot view down the canal,” shared the homeowner. A “patriotic white” paint palette flows through most of the home, and this ties each room together and complements the waterfront scenery. The kitchen and living areas encompass an open-design concept, which allows the homeowners and their guests to congregate easily. The U-shaped kitchen layout showcases bright, white cabinetry, modern appliances

GATHER ’ROUND Crisp, hardwood floors, turquoise pendant lighting and stunning bayfront views characterize this amazing U-shaped kitchen designed by Fisher Architecture.

A unique component of the home, the elevator displays a multistory, hand-painted mural with an underwater theme that takes riders from the sea floor to the water’s surface. “We always think for the future and create situations where the home will still allow its residents to take advantage of it for many years to come,” offered Keith. The backside of the house presents the ultimate outdoor living experience, with picturesque waterfront views and ample entertaining areas. There are three levels of deck space, each with matching large, black lanterns. The top two floors also contain clear railings so that more of the views can go unobstructed. The bottom floor includes boat and Jet Ski docks, as well as a sizable, enclosed outdoor shower. The homeowners and their guests are relishing every detail of their new sanctuary and are thankful for Keith’s unwavering commitment to designing their dream home. “Keith was so accommodating and flexible. He leveraged his experience and talent to keep providing suggestions as my vision evolved,” shared the homeowner. CS

and stunning bay views. Turquoise pendant lights, acquired from London, are a focal point of the room. Also notable, the homeowner collects oyster platters from all over the world, which are on display in the kitchen’s topmost glass cabinets. The narrow yet lengthy adjacent pantry space includes floor-to-ceiling shelving and a rolling ladder. The homeowner was seeking a resortlike feel so that his adult children and their significant others would feel comfortable coming and going as they pleased. This in mind, Keith incorporated en-suite bathrooms with heated floors in all the guest rooms. The master bedroom, located on the top floor, overlooks the bay and includes a massive walk-in closet and master bathroom with intricate tilework. Adjacent to the master bedroom is a spacious yet sleek laundry room. Because the homeowners wanted their home to be easily accessible for many years to come, Keith worked with them to incorporate unique elements to ensure that it was built to accommodate people of all ages. Some of these elements include 3’ doors, guard rails in the bathrooms and an elevator.

PARTING SHOT

Good Morning! Photo and Description by Pamela Aquilani Over the more than 30 years that I have worked at improving my photography, I have learned, usually the hard way, the great value in previsualizing my subject, light and moment. This photograph is a great example of that. For many, it would appear that I casually walked upon this scene, saw it and whipped my camera into action within seconds of first sighting.

I actually envisioned this scene the night before I shot it. I packed the gear I needed, got out of the house well before sunrise, and drove as close as I could to the site. I knew in advance that I would have to park over a mile from this dune crossing, hike in with my gear, and be set up nearly 30 minutes before sunrise, so I planned accordingly. I could not predict the quality of the light when I set this shoot up the day before, but the weather forecast was encouraging, so I went out. Planning is everything. The more I shoot, the more I can previsualize what I want to get. My advice to those studying photography is to invest the time to be able to see the final photograph in advance. Then, determine when you think the best time and condition to photograph it will be. CS
