Ever since she was a little girl, Zoe Messick had always dreamt of having the perfect smile. As an 11-year-old in 2010, she and her parents sought treatment from a local orthodontist who recommended braces to correct the alignment of her teeth. This was a critical time for the preteen, who was shy, introverted and always guarded that other kids might make fun of how her teeth looked. “I never would show my teeth when I smiled,” Zoe said. “I was always so embarrassed about them, and it affected my self-confidence.” Over the next two-plus years, Zoe patiently, and sometimes painfully, waited for the treatment to conclude, so she could finally be herself — free from self-consciousness and doubt. Unfortunately, she and her family’s expectations of what her smile would look like afterward were not met. Disappointed, Zoe continued on through her teenage years, attending Salisbury Christian School and performing as a vocalist with the school’s worship team and at her church, but she never fully showed the person she knew she was inside. “Even though I had treatment elsewhere, all of my friends who went to Tilghman Orthodontics had such beautiful smiles and outcomes. I never felt like my smile looked like theirs and that was very difficult for me,” Zoe said. In September 2018, Zoe made her first patient visit to Tilghman Orthodontics, and instantly she knew her next orthodontic experience would be a much different one. “From the minute I walked in, I felt welcome and at ease. The staff at Tilghman Orthodontics is very professional, and they always make sure you’re comfortable. I’ve always been impressed by how quick and easy the appointments are and how friendly everyone is!” Dr. Michael Tilghman assessed Zoe’s case history and current status, and while her teeth were technically straightened from previous orthodontic treatment, Zoe had underlying issues, including her bite and missing teeth, which were never addressed and prevented her from having the perfect smile. His detailed treatment plan for Zoe focused on correcting with extractions and further alignment of her bite and teeth through orthodontic treatment. Fast-forward to October 3, 2020 — a day Zoe had been dreaming of for as long as she could remember. She was ready to walk down the aisle to marry the love of her life, Chris, during an intimate ceremony at a private estate in Cambridge. “Having a new, beautiful smile on one of the biggest days of my life was such an amazing feeling. It boosted my confidence and made me feel my absolute best on my wedding day!” Today, the 21-year-old graphic designer and social media coordinator is beaming with confidence thanks to the comprehensive care she received at Tilghman Orthodontics. “Dr. Tilghman has genuinely given me a smile I have always wanted, and now I don’t think twice about showing my teeth!”

AVENUE APOTHECARY & SPA When Victoria DeSilver opened Avenue Apothecary & Spa (pictured above) in Rehoboth Beach 20 years ago, she wanted to provide a wellness retreat that offered both traditional and nontraditional treatments free of chemicals and harmful ingredients. “We wanted to provide a natural and organic experience in a relaxing, luxurious environment,” said DeSilver. The spa’s five massage rooms and three dedicated facial rooms all feature serene decor, where clients can unwind with signature treatments like a Vitamin Sea Ultra Collagen Facial or an Earl Grey Teatox body treatment. The spa specializes in holistic treatments, including the latest therapeutic massages and facials that incorporate CBD. “CBD is great for pain management and reducing inflammation and stress. It also has amazing skincare benefits,” DeSilver said. Clients are treated to herbal tea in the spa’s meditation room and wine and mimosas during nail services. Regular clients can also join the spa’s membership program, which includes one service per month and full access to The Avenue Hotel’s Jacuzzi, steam room and indoor pool. 302-227-5649 • AvenueDaySpa.com

Indulge in such unique treatments as the Gua Sha Instant Life Facial, a facial that uses specialized jade instruments to promote lymphatic drainage and hydration, release toxins and improve circulation. Zen Spa’s extensive massage offerings have something for everyone such as the Zen Stoned Massage, which uses hotstone therapy to induce deep-tissue relaxation, or the Bamboo Massage, which helps target problem areas using heated bamboo instruments. The spa’s Good Karma CBD treatments use natural cannabinoids to calm inflammation and induce relaxation during facials and massage. For a beauty boost, visit the Zen Lash Lounge, specializing in all the latest lash treatments from traditional extensions to the Elleebana Keratin Lash Lift, an alternative to extensions that give natural lashes the illusion of perfectly curled, well-defined lashes with long-lasting results. 302-988-1750 • ZenSpaFenwick.com

Trending Treatments The spa industry has been growing worldwide for the past 30 years, and the United States is no exception. In 2018, Americans made 190 million visits to spas, for everything from facials to waxing, according to the International Spa Association. With thousands of destination, day and medi-spas located in all 50 states, it’s no surprise that the spa industry is big business. • The biggest trend in spa treatments right now is CBD treatments that use all-natural cannabinoids. One in five day spas in the U.S. offer CBD treatments. • The second-biggest trend in spa treatments is lash services. More clients than ever are visiting day spas for lash extensions, enhancement and tinting. • The American spa industry brought in more than 18 billion dollars in revenue in 2018, the last time a study was conducted by the International Spa Association. • There are more than 22,000 spas in the United States, which employ 377,000 people, with day spas making up the vast majority. • Among both men and women, the most popular treatment for a day spa visit is a massage.

LINDEN SPA, INN AT PERRY CABIN The ultimate indulgence is a day spent at Linden Spa on the grounds of the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels. With seven treatment rooms, including one for couples, a steam room and the service of a five-star hotel, it’s no wonder this spa attracts visitors from near and far. Many of the spa’s signature treatments are inspired by the coast, like the Three Rivers Massage (named for the surrounding waters of St. Michaels), which uses hot stone and cold river stones to massage head, hands and feet. The Tides of the Chesapeake Body Polish and Massage includes an exfoliation and flowing full-body massage inspired by the tides. Treat your skin to an anti-aging facial that focuses on minimizing fine lines and tightening skin tone, or the Brightening Skin Renewal, which focuses on removing skin discoloration. cs 443-258-2228 InnAtPerryCabin.com/Spa-Fitness

Breaking Through Barriers WHAT BURNING OUT TAUGHT ME ABOUT PRIORITIZING MY WORK AND LIFE Written by Carson Tate It was December 26, the day after Christmas, 10 days after my daughter’s first birthday. I was sitting on the floor, coiling Christmas lights, when I tried to stand up. Almost immediately, I sunk back down to the floor. I was tired, physically and emotionally. Even my soul felt tired. How did I get here? Six weeks after the birth of my daughter, I chose to jump back into the whirlwind of busyness — airplanes, travel and meetings — striving to build my consulting business. I spent the entire first year of her life haunted by my ego as I frantically tried to

grow my business, serve my clients all over the world and prove to myself that I was needed and valuable. This was all part of something bigger for me personally. I wanted to live up to my image of the successful woman: smart, driven, professionally accomplished; a Mary Poppins mom; a loving wife; a leader in the community. That superwoman was my gold standard, and I had spent years, and especially the previous year, trying to live up to it. But now, on December 26, I’d awakened only to realize that as much as I was chasing
the dream of the superwoman, I wasn’t living my life. The words of Socrates, “Beware the bareness of a busy life,” were suddenly eerily real. It was time for me to face my fears and make bold choices about my life and the way that I worked. I started to make these bold choices for my life, with three key strategies that not only anchored me as I picked myself up that December 26 but also continue to support me today as I work to overcome my fears and build a life where I live fully.
Focus on impact, not output For many years, I prized my ability to produce significant amounts of work — my output. It became something I was known for; however, it came at a tremendous personal cost. There is work, and then there is the real work, work that has an impact on the bottom line, your clients and your organization. Where are you focusing on output instead of impact? What would shift for you, personally and professionally, if you appreciated impact more than output? Honor the way you work I cannot sit still. I prefer to stand when writing. My brain shuts down after 9:00 p.m. I do not pull all-nighters well. I am grumpy and unfocused if I do not exercise. And if I am hungry, there is nothing that can keep me focused. It took me a long time to admit these things to myself. Then, it took even longer for me to actually honor that as the way that I worked. Honor the way you work. When do you do your best work — in the morning, afternoon or late at night? Under what conditions do you produce your best work — when you exercise, have adequate sleep or are listening to great music? Resist giving into work cultures that undermine your productivity. Let the quality of your work and the impact you are making speak for themselves. If you do, no one will question how you work. Stop getting derailed by what you “should” do It is difficult for me to say no, because I get seduced and derailed by something I call the “shoulds.” The shoulds are those voices in your head — you know the ones — saying, “You should be doing this”; “You should like that”; “You should spend time on this”; “You should stop doing that” and so forth — endlessly. The problem with the shoulds is they lead you to overcommit, and when you overcommit, the quality and impact of your work suffers. To combat the shoulds, I use the “POWER No.” Continued on Page 35

A New Normal WORKING MOTHERS CAN FIND A HEALTHY BALANCE OF PEACE AND PURPOSE BY PRACTICING MINIMALISM Written by Alexandra Keegan
34
CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2021
LIKE MANY PEOPLE, I SPEND A GOOD DEAL OF MY TIME doing things I think I “should” do, whether or not they are important to me. I should wear makeup every day; I should do the dishes before I go to bed. The list goes on. In thinking this way, I take on too much or make things harder on myself than I need to. As I adjust to being a working mom and realize that now more than ever, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day, it seemed fitting to write about letting go of the “shoulds” — especially once I stumbled across an article at WorkingMother.com titled “8 Ways Minimalist Moms Have This Whole Working Mother Thing Figured Out.” Minimalism is having a cultural moment. It appeals to me for the same reason it appeals to so many others: When we have less and do less, our lives become simpler and less stressful. We are more present because we aren’t weighed down by our things or our commitments. When you apply the concept of minimalism to life as a working mom, a season that is commonly portrayed as a maelstrom of permission slips, soccer cleats and rushing from one place to the next suddenly becomes purposeful and focused. Continued on Page 36
It’s based on the acrostic POWER: Priorities, Opportunities, Who, Expectations and Real. Here’s how it works: Priorities: When that voice in your head tells you that you should complete this task, lead another project, attend another meeting or make cupcakes from scratch, evaluate the priority of that message. How does this should align to your priorities, the organization’s strategic priorities and/ or your family’s priorities?
Who: Who or what triggered this should? Was it an old script from childhood? Was it an ad in a magazine? Was it your colleague? Expectations: Whose expectations are these, really? Your manager? Your mother? Your spouse? Your child? Society’s? Real: Get real. What is this should really about? Are there real priorities that are driving this should, or are you taking on societal expectations that are not in alignment with your priorities? Say no to the many things that threaten to distract you and derail you, so you can focus your energies on the handful of things that will lead you to your success. The POWER puts you back in the driver’s seat, empowering you to respond rather than merely react. It’s time to take back control. Facing my fears was hard. I am not sure I would have done it if I had not been sitting on my family-room floor that December 26. My advice to you is this: Don’t wait until you reach your breaking point or there is a catastrophic event to start making bold choices about our life and the way you work. This is your time. cs

“The minimalist working mother doesn’t do it all: She does the things that are important to her and to her family,” writes author Rachel Jonat. “How she spends her time and her money directly aligns with what she values. She knows that time is her most valuable resource, and she spends it wisely at home and at work.” Jonat’s article got me thinking: What can I let go of that doesn’t serve me? What are the things I do or stress about just because I think that’s the way things are supposed to be done? How do I actually want to spend my time? For me, the biggest thing to let go of is house perfectionism. My house is never going to be “just so”; that’s not me, and that’s okay. I want my house to be pretty, and I want to enjoy the process of making it so, but it’s always going to look lived in, and there’s always going to be something to fix. I’d much rather spend my Saturday morning going for a run than touching up the paint in the kitchen for the 15th time, and that’s okay. Another thing new parents are often told they should do is go out on regular, kid-free dates. I’m fairly certain the person who came up with that advice never lived in a beach town during the summer, or through COVID-19, or lived 90 minutes away from most of their family. Something my husband, Dave, and I really enjoy is just hanging out in our family room, catching up and having good conversation over a beer or two after our daughter has been put down for the night. Like most things, practicing minimalism in our daily lives is easier said than done, but I encourage you to give it a try. Also, think about letting go of those “shoulds” in favor of saying no and making decisions based on how you value spending your time. cs Editor’s note: Alexandra Keegan is the former internal communications coordinator at Beebe Healthcare. Peninsula Imaging utilizes the latest screening technologies to help physicians detect and treat medical conditions
HIGH-TECH SCANNING FOR YOUR HEALTH 38

PENINSULA IMAGING’S LOW-DOSE CT TEAM Crystal Deweerdt, Stacey McIntyre, Suzanne Miklosovich and Vincent Caimi utilize the industry’s latest technologies to provide less invasive and less expensive screenings.
Peninsula Imaging is a premier, full-service imaging center located in Salisbury at the Woodbrooke Medical Complex. Their services include 3T MRI, low-dose CT, PET/CT, 3D mammography, diagnostic x-ray, ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, bone density, fluoroscopy, FibroScan and advanced body-composition scan. In this article, we will take a closer look at the low-dose CT screening services available at Peninsula Imaging. Low-dose CT (computed tomography) is an imaging process used to obtain detailed images of the inside of the body. CT uses x-rays and computer technology to make cross-sectional images of the body. A series of x-ray pictures, each a thin slice, are put together in a computer to form a three-dimensional view of the inside of the body. If an x-ray is like looking at a photo of a heart, a CT scan is like looking at a model that you can pick up and examine from any angle. CT scans are used to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Medical imaging exams have been directly linked to greater life expectancy, declines in cancer mortality rates, and are generally less expensive than the invasive procedures that they replace. Low-dose lung cancer screening, virtual colonoscopy and coronary CTA are low-dose CT screening exams performed at Peninsula Imaging, which are alternatives to invasive procedures. Low-dose lung cancer screening produces high-resolution 3D images of the lungs in just a few seconds to identify signs of lung cancer. The goal of annual lung cancer screening is to detect lung cancer at a small size and before it has spread, which is when the cancer has a greater chance of being cured. Lung cancer screening with the use of low-dose CT combined with the appropriate follow-up care has been proven to significantly reduce lung cancer deaths. Talk with your physician to see if you meet the criteria and are eligible to benefit from a lung cancer screening. However, if you do not meet the criteria, and feel you would benefit from a low-dose lung cancer screening, the test is available at a very affordable out-of-pocket cost. Virtual colonoscopy is a noninvasive procedure that uses CT scanning to obtain an interior view of the colon. Data obtained from the CT scans are used to create three-dimensional images of the colon to look for signs of pre-cancerous growths otherwise known as polyps, cancer and other diseases of the large intestine. Colon cancer screening should begin at age 50; however, those with an increased risk or family history of colon cancer may need to begin screening at age 40 or younger and may need to be screened more often. Experts believe that over 90% of all colorectal cancers can be cured through early detection and treatment. Unfortunately, many forgo this life saving screening due to convenience, cost, availability and embarrassment. Only 30% of people who should be screened for colon cancer have been screened. As virtual colonoscopy is mildly invasive, as compared with traditional colonoscopy, it is an excellent alternative for colon cancer screening. A coronary CTA scan can discover signs of heart disease that would be invisible in EKG’s, stress testing, calcium scoring and even cardiac catheterization. Unlike calcium scoring, coronary CTA can identify what is known as “vulnerable plaque,” the type of arterial plaque most likely to develop into a life-threatening blockage. Coronary CTA provides much of the information that conventional cardiac catheterization does, but because of its unique ability to see the wall of the artery, it provides important information that can be invisible on catheterization. Because coronary CTA uses CT scanning instead of catheterization, it is safer, painless and noninvasive. THE FACES OF HEALTHCARE HEROES
BRIGHTER DAYS AHEAD Your Doc’s In founder Dr. Walter Gianelle anticipates a surge of COVID-19 cases across the Shore this winter, but believes a return to normal awaits later this year.
The team at Your Doc’s In urgent-care clinics have answered the call of duty during the COVID-19 crisis Photography by Grant L. Gursky
LEADING BY EXAMPLE DURING A PANDEMIC DR. WALTER D. GIANELLE, AN EXPERIENCED ER PHYSICIAN and former pararescue team member in the United States Air Force, has been working along the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic since the virus’s arrival on the Eastern Shore last spring. The founder of Your Doc’s In (YDI), which comprises six award-winning urgent-care clinics and occupational-health centers on Delmarva, Dr. Gianelle has personally seen as many as 300 COVID-positive patients in close contact, and his dedicated team of board-certified physicians and medical specialists have administered more than 10,000 COVID-19 tests to date. With a surge in cases expected this winter, that number will rise significantly. Yet, he and his staff remain undaunted, ready to serve their community while continuously placing themselves in harm’s way.

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2021
“We all took The Hippocratic Oath for a reason — to take care of people,” Dr. Gianelle said. “It’s a responsibility, similar to the military, to do your duty — even if someone puts your health, or your life, at risk. Becoming a physician doesn’t mean that we walk away from the people who are ill in our community. Physicians have been putting themselves at risk for a long time, but it doesn’t stop with this pandemic, and it won’t stop with the next. We can’t walk away. There’s a job to do, and we have to do our job, to care for those who are ill.” They’re doing their jobs extremely well. Consider this: Although they encountered potential COVID-19 exposures thousands of times in 2020, just two YDI team members contracted the virus. The reasoning for their remarkably high levels of well-being is simple, said Dr. Gianelle.

“We follow the rules. Our staff wear gowns, and we mask up. We take the necessary precautions, and we do our jobs to the best of our abilities for the community. Our staff has been outstanding,” he said. Your Doc’s In now offers COVID-19 Rapid Diagnostic Testing, which will dramatically increase efficiency and effectiveness for patients and staff. The YDI staff have been trained by a certified lab supervisor to perform the test and determine its results properly. Each test, according to Dr. Gianelle, takes just three minutes, and results are available within about 15 minutes. The tests are known to be 90-95% accurate. Every Your Doc’s In location will have ample supplies of tests. YDI will also administer rounds of the new COVID-19 vaccines, which were in the early stages of nationwide distribution at the time of this printing. “I think the people who are really at risk need to get immunized from a priority perspective,” Dr. Gianelle said. “Anyone with lung issues, diabetes, over age 65 and those who are at high exposure rates should get immunized. They should be the priorities, and we need to protect them.” With multiple vaccines showing high efficacy rates now available on the Shore, combined with the extensive research and data derived from the virus in 2020, Dr. Gianelle said he expects that our area will return to some sort of normality in 2021. “It’s going to take a little while, but we’re going to get back there,” he said. “Some may come out of this completely afraid and want to wear a mask around other people — and that’s okay. But I think the majority of people want to be in the movie theaters and restaurants and going to sporting events. They want to get back to their lives.
I think by summer — with people immunized and after we get through the flu season — we’ll be back on track to a normal life again.” Your Doc’s In continues to operate its clinics for those requiring urgent care. Patients who would like to be seen but want to minimize their exposure at the clinics are encouraged to make an appointment online through YDI’s website. At the appointed time, if there is a wait inside, one can remain in their vehicle, if preferred. This applies to walk-in patients, too. The Wonder of
Essential Oils
Here it is, 2021 — it is a season of fresh beginnings! It’s time to try something new, yet rooted in ancient history, when the passion for essential oils (EOs) began. From scrappy, weatherworn plants on Mediterranean hills to trees far out in the Pacific, these oils have traveled far and wide. EOs are derived from thousands of plants and trees around the globe. They are used in perfumes, as food additives and for aromatherapy. Wrapped within each oil are chemical constituents that bestow special properties. So, what can they do for you? Let’s take a look at their antimicrobial care.

Five EOs for a New You in a New Year You’ve driven by local lavender farms, drawn to lavender’s lush, beckoning shades. Its flowering tips yield soothing oils, like linalool.
Lavender contains terpenes, which are known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving properties, the foundation of lavender’s caring nature. Erin Shivone, LMT, RYT, owner of Just Be Holistic Wellness in Milton, DE, shared that it’s her go-to for bug bites, scratches and rashes. 59 Atlantic Ave., Suite 2, Ocean View, DE 19970
Erin keeps tea tree handy because it strengthens skin while quelling viruses. This oil is part of many health and beauty products for its anti-inflammatory properties. She notes that tea tree is good for cleaning your home and making hand sanitizers, along with fighting acne and nasty cold sores.
Erin combines lavender and tea tree with frankincense, creating a spray that calms bug bites, minor burns and scrapes. She refers to this EO as liquid gold, as its health benefits include antiviral and antibacterial properties, plus the ability to care for wounds and boost your immune system.

NEW YEAR. NEW YOU.
Eucalyptus is a tried-and-true oil that fights viruses responsible for clogged breathing. Its cleansing aroma comes from the eucalyptol extracted from its leaves. This opens and clears your lungs, letting you once again breathe deeply. Plus, its cooling mint brings welcome relief in balms for dry, chapped lips.
Thyme can now occupy a spot in your medicine cabinet, as well as in the kitchen. Its oil has been shown to limit the growth of fungi in lab settings. It has strong, all-around antimicrobial uses and is another of Erin’s go-to EOs, helping when sore throats and stomach aches are making the rounds. cs

Essential oils play a large role in Erin’s holistic approach to healing. Their restorative properties are essential to the health and well-being of her family, too, and are used to treat a variety of ailments. For more, visit BeHolisticWellness.com.

WHILE TIMES HAVE CHANGED, THE MESSAGES STAY THE SAME; SO UNPLUG, REMAIN POSITIVE AND FOCUS ON WHAT TRULY MATTERS Written by Alexandra Keegan
WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, I SPENT HOUR UPON HOUR READING MAGAZINES like Seventeen and YM (R.I.P.) and comparing myself to the tan, willowy models depicted therein. I am neither tan nor willowy, and although I’m no longer particularly bothered by the physical manifestations of my Polish heritage, those models really did a number on my self-esteem. I can’t tell you the last time I bought a magazine, but there are some new magazines in town, and they are much sneakier: Instagram and my Google Now feed. By the time they became my media of choice, I had convinced myself that I had outgrown the body-image issues of my adolescence and was therefore impervious to messages about how I should dress myself, how I should decorate my house and even how I should birth my children.

No one is surprised by what comes next. I’m not. Recently, my husband suggested I delete the Target and Amazon apps, along with Instagram, from my phone. I was taken aback. These apps were my go-to when I needed some mindless leisure time. His thought was that by deleting my two favorite shopping apps, I’d spend less money, and if I deleted Instagram, perhaps I’d feel better about myself — and want to buy fewer things, because I’d see fewer photos of beautiful moms in Madewell jeans feeding their children organic fruit snacks in gorgeous, minimal, modern farmhouses. I took him up on deleting the Amazon and Target apps, and guess what? It worked! I can still access either site anytime I want, but typing the URLs into my browser is just enough of a hassle that I only go to those
pages when there’s actually something I need. Ninety-five percent of the time, that something is diapers, wipes or milk-storage bags. I began unfollowing the Instagram accounts that made me feel like I was “less than” and tweaking my Google Now feed so that it surfaced more “news” of value (more “Is Baby-Led Weaning Right for Me?” — Answer: probably not — and less about the demise of Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter’s marriage). But even with those changes and the purchase of a sketchbook, I still find myself defaulting to scrolling through my phone at the end of the day. I berate myself for doing something that I know isn’t good for me and for not being more disciplined. If I just practiced my hand-lettering, I could open an Etsy shop! If I could just get my butt on the treadmill more than once a week, surely I

could run more than two miles at a time! If I could just crack open a book, maybe I could finally finish one! But by the time 8 p.m. rolls around and my daughter is more or less down for the night, I am spent. I’ve never been a big TV watcher, but I am a big reader. I can’t tell you the last time I read a book, but I do enjoy reading Instagram and the “news” I get from Google Now (which is really the modern-day equivalent of People) and occasionally longer-form stories from the likes of The New Yorker and The Atlantic. I’m sure if it was 2000 instead of 2020, I’d be flipping through a pile of magazines on my coffee table for the 2,000th time instead of through my phone. The point is, I think we all need downtime. I think we need to recognize that it is hard to work eight hours a day, spend another hour commuting, another hour and a half getting everyone ready and out the door and another hour making and cleaning up after dinner. That’s 11.5 hours out of 16 waking hours. During the remaining 4.5 hours, my focus is on spending time with my daughter and maintaining a happy, healthy marriage. It doesn’t leave time for much else. I keep a running to-do list in my phone, and if I get one or two small things done each week, I consider it a success. When I think of how full my life is — and it truly is full, because my little family means more to me than I could ever express — I no longer feel bad for flipping through the 2019 equivalents of Seventeen and People. But just like in the ’90s, I need to remind myself that what I’m seeing isn’t real and that the lives of those influencers aren’t perfect either, even though they may look that way. Moving forward, I’m going to be more intentional about the time I spend on my phone and make an effort to inject some positivity into my day-to-day (gratitude journal, anyone?). I would love to hear your thoughts about Instagram — the good and the bad — and how you deal with the pressure to have an Instagram-perfect life. cs

“Other larger systems may attempt to take care of a problem, but at TidalHealth we take care of the person.” Steve Leonard, Ph.D., MBA, FACHE, President and CEO of TidalHealth.
PROMOTIONAL SECTION
TidalHealth is dedicated to managing chronic conditions through care and case managers, and its health workers and Wagner Wellness Van are in the community, helping friends, family and neighbors. Partnerships with local jurisdictions provide enhanced services and muchneeded community outreach. When it comes to complex care, TidalHealth leads the way. A pioneer in heart care, TidalHealth recently debuted the brand-new MitraClip procedure, which repairs leaky heart valves without open heart surgery; it continues to provide the most advanced cancer care; and neurosurgeons are performing minimally invasive procedures in a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room. Leonard says this high level of care is due to the organization’s long-standing commitment to excellence and the high caliber providers it attracts. “TidalHealth has a long tradition of providing complex services to our community going back to our first cardiac catheterization and open heart surgery in the early 1970s,” he said. “Since then, we have attracted the highest quality, fellowship-trained specialists and subspecialists to continue the tradition of providing complex care close to home.” The best providers are looking for organizations that have a history of providing complex services, the necessary infrastructure and most importantly a solid team of nurses and technical staff to achieve the best possible outcomes, Leonard said. That is what TidalHealth offers. “Members of the community should feel confident that our specialists are the best in their class and have outcomes to match it,” he said. “They are well past their training, as opposed to providers at larger academic institutions, and they come to TidalHealth to develop deep relationships with their patients — not just for one particular need, but over the course of their lives.” At TidalHealth, the goal is to improve access and connect each member of the community with the healthcare they need to stay well. It’s more convenient and less costly for patients to receive healthcare outside of the hospital, so expansion efforts are in the works. Plans are underway to
develop a large campus in Millsboro, and TidalHealth continues to address underserved areas throughout the region. TidalHealth’s mission to improve the health of the communities it serves is best accomplished when folks have a relationship with a primary care provider. To facilitate this, TidalHealth is improving access and making care more convenient with more than 30 primary and specialty care offices throughout Delmarva. Since all of TidalHealth’s providers will be connected through a single electronic medical record, each patient will have access to seamless, integrated care right in their backyard. While it’s important to get an annual physical and have regular checkups, TidalHealth has experts in 23 specialties who can care for patients with more complex needs. To ensure patients receive the best care, physician recruitment will remain a priority. “Providers want to be part of a high-quality system where they can practice their craft to the fullest,” Leonard said. “In the future, we plan to start multiple physician residencies where our highly-skilled physicians can train the next generation of physicians. These include internal medicine and general surgery to start, and likely others as we work through the process.” For Leonard, the future is bright. He’s excited about the changes taking place throughout TidalHealth and is dedicated to improving healthcare on Delmarva. He encourages those with the same goal to reach out. “If you want to be a member of TidalHealth, no matter your role, please contact us,” he said. “It takes a team and ours is growing.”

Welcome to 2021 TidalHealth is dedicated to the health of your entire family, caring for all ages. We can connect you with a team that offers more wellness options in the most locations on the Delmarva Peninsula. A primary care provider who you can see every year is a vital piece of the health puzzle. A regular doctor will be best able to keep track of your changes from year to year, and can be the provider you turn to when issues arise throughout the year. He or she will be in the best position to truly understand your needs by knowing your medications and medical history. Our TidalHealth medical practice family is over 780 team members strong, featuring approximately 250 providers (doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners), all of whom are all dedicated to patient-focused care. The team can be found in 23 different specialties at 30+ locations across Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, Sussex and Caroline counties. The best gift of health you can provide yourself in 2021 is to schedule a visit with a primary care physician. It is something we should all do annually. If you do not have one, we can help you choose one in the Find a Doctor section of our website at tidalhealth.org. Please plan to discuss with him or her your health, screenings, checkups and what you can begin doing better this year.
Steve Leonard, Ph.D., MBA, FACHE President/CEO TidalHealth
This relationship is important for people of all ages. Providers can be extremely helpful suggesting different types of screenings, so you can be proactive and make sure you are doing everything you can for your health. Everyone should have an annual physical — it is the best way to keep an eye on important health indicators such as blood pressure and cholesterol. Once you better understand your current state, you can make a plan with your provider. It is good to keep it simple to start by selecting one or two small activities or tasks. Many of our practices now offer telehealth options for those of you who would prefer engaging your provider remotely. These visits are safe, effective and equally as important to your continued good health as being there in person. If interested, please ask if your doctor offers telehealth appointment options. My physician likes to remind me that change will not occur overnight, but to be patient and persistent. You will notice that the change will become part of your daily life, and your life will change for the better. Steve Leonard, Ph.D., MBA, FACHE President/CEO

For the seventh consecutive year, TidalHealth was named one of Healthgrades 50 Best Hospitals in the United States for Vascular Surgery (2015-2021). The recognitions also include five Healthgrades Excellence Awards for Orthopedic Surgery (2017-2021), Joint Replacement (2021), Vascular Surgery (2015-2021), Critical Care (2020 and 2021) and Patient Safety (20172020). The recognition places TidalHealth in the Top 5 percent or 10 percent in the United States for these clinical services. Additionally, TidalHealth received 17 5-Star ratings across all nine services reviewed. That signifies they are performing better than expected when compared to the nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide surveyed by Healthgrades in 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. TidalHealth Peninsula Regional also holds the Healthgrades distinction of being one of America’s Best 250 Hospitals in 2020. Additionally, the hospital is one of just eight in Maryland and the only on the Delmarva Peninsula to be awarded a 5-Star rating, the highest possible, by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This is the third consecutive year that TidalHealth Peninsula Regional has achieved the Five-Star designation from CMS.
The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) also recently announced that TidalHealth Peninsula Regional and TidalHealth Nanticoke have again earned 2020 CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired recognition. TidalHealth has been honored with a Most Wired Award or Most Improved Hospital Award a total of 13 times in the 22 years of the survey — 11 of those consecutively — for the use of information technology (IT) in support of medication and patient safety, information exchange and data protection.

PROMOTIONAL SECTION
COVID-19 research continues at TidalHealth COVID-19 is still a threat, but the healthcare experts at TidalHealth are working diligently to bring new therapies — and a vaccine — to Delmarva. TidalHealth is an affiliate of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network, a group of academic and communitybased clinical researchers designed to provide new opportunities for research collaborations and accelerate the transfer of new diagnostic, treatment and disease prevention advances from the research arena to patient care. The health system’s dedication to research has paid off recently as it battles the pandemic. Until a vaccine becomes readily available, TidalHealth has been able to offer several antibody therapies to COVID-19 patients that help eliminate the virus from the blood. Most recently, TidalHealth became a regional referral site for the administration of a new type of COVID-19 treatment that drew attention when it was used to treat President Donald Trump.
Bamlanivimab, a monoclonal antibody produced by Eli Lilly & Co., was granted emergency use authorization by the Food & Drug Administration on Nov. 9. Only six hospitals in Maryland are in the first wave of facilities authorized to use the drug, and TidalHealth is the first site on the Eastern Shore. President Trump received a similar type of monoclonal antibody produced by Regeneron to treat his COVID-19. TidalHealth is also using Sargramostim, a new therapy that works with a patient’s immune system to clear debris in the alveoli — tiny air sacs in the lungs — and rapidly improves breathing. Dr. Bob Joyner, Director of TidalHealth’s Richard A. Henson Research Institute, said he’s proud of TidalHealth’s efforts to protect the community and its employees while caring for patients diagnosed with COVID-19. “It’s important to know that TidalHealth is unique,” he said. “There isn’t a magic switch — it will take
time and diligence to return to life as we knew it — but we take the job of caring for our community very seriously, and we’re doing a great job.” In the midst of the pandemic, innovation continues at TidalHealth to keep patients safe. At TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, a triage tent was erected outside to safely care for Emergency Department patients and the Layfield Tower was transitioned to negative pressure to provide a safe care area for COVID-19 positive patients. TidalHealth also applied for and received an emergency Certificate of Need allowing for the construction of a new 44-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), increasing capacity to nearly 100 beds for the sickest patients. In TidalHealth’s primary and specialty care offices, physicians continue to offer telehealth appointments so patients can seek medical advice and treatment without leaving home. “What we have learned through this pandemic is that we truly are better together,” said Kathryn Fiddler, DNP, MBA, RN, Vice President of Population Health.
Delajuan Coston, RN, an Emergency Department nurse, was the first person to be vaccinated for COVID-19 at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional.

ULTIMATE CHALLENGE ON A SATURDAY MORNING THIS SEPTEMBER, THOUSANDS OF ATHLETES will descend on the small Eastern Shore town of Cambridge with the same goal: to test their athletic prowess in what is considered the ultimate endurance challenge, Ironman. The Ironman race consists of a 2.4-mile open swim, a 112-mile bike course and a 26.2mile run. Competitors must complete the race in under 17 hours. Ironman is one of the most well-known and popular endurance events in existence, and athletes travel from all over the world to compete in Ironman-sanctioned races, with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the Ironman World Championships, held each year in Hawaii. Fitness and mental perseverance are

motivating factors, and the chance to push oneself to succeed physically in more than one discipline. “It used to be that people ran a marathon to test themselves; now they are looking for the next thing,” says Angie Hengst, race director for Ironman Maryland, of Ironman’s incredible appeal. From Hawaii to Maryland Ironman has come a long way from its beginnings in Hawaii more than four decades ago. Husband-wife triathletes Judy and John Collins sought to create a triathlon in their new home of Hawaii after competing in races in their native California. They had the idea to combine the Waikiki Roughwater Swim with the Around-Oahu Bike Race and
the Honolulu Marathon in order to create a one-day endurance event. On February 18, 1978, the first Ironman took place with only 15 competitors, and the race has continued annually since then. It is remarkable that the small town of Cambridge plays host to one of only 12 fulldistance Ironman races in North America. For more than 20 years, Cambridge has hosted major triathlons such as Eagleman, a 70.3mile Ironman race that takes place every June. In order to compete in a full-distance Ironman race, one had to travel farther afield. Then, in 2014, The Ironman Group, the corporate organization for the races, officially chose Cambridge as the next site for an Ironman full-distance race.
“We had races in New York and Florida, but we were looking for some expansion into the Mid-Atlantic. We met with local community officials and were welcomed with a tremendous amount of support,” says Keats McGonigal, head of North American Operations for The Ironman Group. “The places where our races are most successful are the ones where they want us to be there.”

Cambridge Course Every Ironman course is the same distance, but no two venues are alike. Ironman Maryland starts with a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River, followed by a 112-mile bikeride through town and out to the countryside, with two loops through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. A 26.2-mile marathon completes the course, ending in the center of downtown Cambridge to much fanfare. Competitors are divided by age groups, and worldchampionship qualifiers are based on their finishing times in their age groups. Every race is awarded a certain number of world championship qualifying slots based on the number of registrants — Cambridge usually produces around 40 slots.

The flat terrain of the Cambridge course makes for a faster, less technical race than other Ironman courses, a factor that can be enticing for beginners and expert triathletes alike. “The race is never truly easy, but the Maryland course is definitely a bit more accessible than say, a course in Colorado that might present elevation challenges,” McGonigal says. “For a handful of athletes that are chasing a personal record, Ironman Maryland is a very attractive race.” On race day, weather plays an important factor, and conditions must be optimal for certain aspects of the race. The swimming portion has been canceled in years past for high winds and strong currents. “We do have kayakers in the water for support and contingency plans in place, but the swim portion can present challenges with the current. It can be daunting for some athletes,” race director Hengst says. Other challenges, such as dehydration and lack of proper nutrition, can hinder athletes in their quest to complete the race. Preparation is key and can be a matter of serious illness or, in extreme cases, death. Community Support A race with so many complicating
factors, and its sheer number of competitors, requires months of planning and support. “Gerry Boyle, the first race director for Ironman Maryland, worked tirelessly to make the race such a success and what it is today,” says Amanda Fenstermaker, director of Ironclub Maryland, a local booster association that helps raise money for the various costs associated with hosting the race. Cambridge, with its 13,000 residents, has embraced the race with open arms. Local schoolchildren write letters of support to athletes, while retail and restaurant establishments offer food and support on race day. “The Ironman Maryland community is unmatched,” McGonigal says. “The level of support they offer our athletes is incredible. Their warmth and hospitality keep athletes coming back to Cambridge year after year.” The Ironman Foundation has also given back to local residents, donating 100 bikes to children in need, as well as $25,000 to local food banks. A Look Ahead When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, race organizers remained cautiously optimistic that the race could happen. “No one was surprised when Eagleman was canceled in June,” says Hengst.

GET TO KNOW
BLAKE SAJONIA WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE AN IRONMAN?
THE COUNTDOWN IS ON Ironman competitors from 65 countries and all 50 states will descend upon Cambridge this September.
“But as the summer wore on, it became clear there was no way to host several thousand athletes safely.” The Ironman Group organized ways to engage competitors, like the Ironman Virtual Club, introduced in April, which helps athletes track their training and provides motivational support. It quickly surged to more than 120,000 members. Despite the break in 2020, demand for Ironman is higher than ever. Every full-distance race for 2021 has already sold out. The Ironman Group instituted safe-return-to-racing guidelines that follow public health protocols, and they expect to move forward with any upcoming events. “Our competitors have spent the year training, and they are

ready,” McGonigal says. “We have more registrations than we ever have before.” In Cambridge, 2021 preparations are heating up as race coordinators meet with vendors and local community leaders. “We are 100 percent planning for the race to happen,” Hengst said. Athletes competing in Ironman Maryland 2021 are already training, focused on a goal nine months in the future. They will travel to Cambridge from 65 countries and all 50 states to line up on the banks of the Choptank River. Three grueling events will push their mental fortitude and physical endurance to the brink as they move toward the finish line, seeking to hear four undeniable words: “You are an Ironman!” cs
Blake Sajonia, an engineer patent attorney from Columbia, MD, has been competing in triathlons since the early 1980s, when he completed his first multisport endurance race in Cape Cod in 1983. In 2014, he completed Ironman Maryland for the first time and placed third in his age division. In 2019, at the age of 60, he completed six Ironman races around the world, placing on the podium three times in his age group, earning a qualification for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI, in fall 2021.* Today, at the age of 61, Sajonia has not slowed down and trains for hours each week, all for the love of the competition. Coastal Style sat down to learn his secrets and when, if ever, he will give it up. *Ironman World Championships in 2020 were postponed due to COVID-19. What drives you to compete? I’ve been an athlete my whole life, and I got into triathlons in my 20s because I wanted a lifetime sport. I love to test myself, train and see if I can put together a good performance on the day of the race. People wanted to know how I did six Ironmans in a year, and the simple answer is that I love it. I have a passion for it.
ALL LOCATIONS OPEN FOR BUSINESS! How do you train? I really take a scientific approach and enjoy studying the science of endurance training. Over the last 10-15 years, I’ve developed a training system largely based on the methods of Dr. George Dallam, PhD, and Dr. Steven Jonas. Their methods rely on science to incorporate things like physiology and biomechanics for endurance training. George Dallam was the first Olympic triathlete coach and has created standards for the rest of us. When people ask me my secret, it’s that I use methods based on science and follow their book. What is your training schedule? I do three swims per week, three biking sessions per week and three runs per week. I also add in strength training and rowing. Within those three workouts, one of them is a speed workout, where I am focused on being as fast as possible, and one of them is a race-pace workout, and one is an endurance workout, where I am adding miles. A lot of my workouts are slow and easy and spent at a reasonable aerobic pace. I may spend 15-20 hours per week training, depending on where I am leading up to the race. And one week a month is spent on recovery, where I may spend half that time training. What role does nutrition play in your training? Nutrition and sleep are extremely important because that’s how you build and repair muscle and keep a healthy immune system. I don’t track my nutrition, and I try to eat healthy, but I eat all kinds of food — pizza, anything. When you train this much, you need a lot of calories. I do pay attention to sleep quality and track my sleep on a Garmin watch. A poor night’s sleep might mean a greater chance for burn out or injury. cs THE AMAZING RACE Run over to CoastalStyleMag.com, where our interview with Ironman competitor Blake Sajonia continues.

INTENTLY FOCUSED DETERMINED ENTREPRENEUR-TURNEDPHOTOGRAPHER ORLANDO WOOTTEN’S DOCUMENTATION OF DELMARVA CAPTURED THE ESSENCE OF ITS PEOPLE AND PASTIMES Written by Ian Post
W
hile photographs document ephemeral moments throughout time, they rarely capture the timeless traditions of people using the land and water — and the eternal beauty of their environment. In the mid-20th century, an ice cream man in Salisbury used professional photography techniques and his artistic eye to develop a portfolio that immortalizes this timeframe on Delmarva. Through Orlando Wootten’s photograph collection at the Nabb Research Center, now available online, we can simultaneously understand our unique regional traditions and appreciate the aesthetic of the images in which they’re captured.

HISTORY
Born in Laurel, DE, in 1909, Orlando Wootten’s early life changed at age 15, when his father — a small-farm operator who also built and ran several sailing vessels — died. Among his final wishes, he directed his bank to provide Orlando with a “fine education.” Wootten later attended Harvard University, where he studied English composition and literature, as well as Columbia Teachers College, where he received an MA in education. After several failed lumbering, farming and butchering ventures during the Great Depression, Wootten was commissioned in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Second World War. After the war, Wootten moved to Salisbury, where he started an ice cream wholesaling business. One of his young employees, who helped freeze and package 400 gallons of ice cream, was Paul Sarbanes, the late U.S. senator from Maryland. When his family doctor recommended that Wootten find a hobby, he bought a camera and learned the art of photography. Later, in the mid-1960s, the city condemned and demolished his ice cream business — an unfortunate moment that nevertheless launched his career as a professional photographer.

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2021
Between 1950 and 1983, Wootten honed his photographic eye by attending institutes of photography in Vermont, New York City and London. During this time, he worked as a staff photographer for the National Park Service, wrote freelance pieces for the Associated Press and served as a photojournalist for The Daily Times in Salisbury. Wootten’s career in photography on the Delmarva Peninsula provided him with the means to document the artistic elements of the place he called home. Wootten’s photographs don’t capture the people and the environment separately; instead, they’re composed such that they demonstrate how people have made livelihoods and traditions on Delmarva’s land and water. In these photographs, we see folks who farm, hunt and trap on land; sail, fish and dredge the water; and sing, eat and celebrate in our communities. The demonstration of longheld traditions are shown in harmony with the eternal landscape of the Chesapeake region — oftentimes captured in a single Wootten photograph.

DOCUMENTING DELMARVA Between 1950 and 1983, Orlando Wootten honed his photographic eye by attending institutes of photography in Vermont, New York City and London.
Wootten’s archival collection came to the Nabb Research Center at Salisbury University in 1995, just two years before he passed away. His photography first garnered widespread recognition in the halls of TidalHealth’s Peninsula Regional Medical Center, but his legacy was cemented in books about the Chesapeake Bay and with the 1994 book Wootten’s Delmarva: A Glimpse of Eastern Shore Life Through the Photographer’s Eye. Now, for the first time ever, Wootten’s collection of 5,500 negatives, slides and prints are available online: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmRha5Xg. For questions about purchasing Wootten’s Delmarva or acquiring reproductions, email nabbcenter@salisbury.edu. cs Editor’s note: Ian Post is the Local History Archivist (formerly University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian) at the Nabb Research Center at Salisbury University. The Resort Real Estate Market is on Fire Ryan, most people were glad to see 2020 ďŹ nally come to end. It’s been a strange year, to say the least. That said, the real estate market has been on ďŹ re locally. What did you see at Atlantic Shores Sotheby’s International Realty? Yes, 2020 has been a remarkably interesting year, which no one in the real estate industry could have predicted. Real estate and everything home-related are sectors that have seen sizable gains during COVID. For example, home sales have increased by 9%, and home prices are up by nearly 4% from this time last year.
Thank You
for Voting Us Best in Worcester County
Do you see 2021 as a good time to buy or sell a home? In general, we are experiencing the continuation of a sellers’ market due to several factors: low supply, high demand and increasing sales prices. That said, if you are looking to buy, home values are more aordable due to lower interest rates. This equates to higher buying power and lower monthly mortgage payment for buyers.
REAL ESTATE AGENT
2020
What do you expect we’ll see in Q1 of 2021? Based on indicators in our market locally, along with the data supported by the nation’s top real estate economists, almost everyone agrees that we will see these same trends continue through the early portion of 2021. Interest rates are anticipated to remain near or at all-time lows for much of spring. This is fueling demand, while inventory levels of homes on the market is extremely low. With this combination of market conditions, home prices will continue to increase.
2020
What do you think has caused the increases in our market? What we originally perceived to be a temporary increase in sales was then fueled by the lockdown measures enforced last spring. Plus, the concept of staying at a beach house for only the summer months has changed. Having a great escape a few hours away in Ocean City has evolved into something more long-term. Lifestyle changes and the ability to work remotely, along with interest rates dropping to all-time lows, combined to create the ideal scenario for buyers to accelerate their purchase plans rather than waiting longer into future to buy a beach home.

TRAVEL
British owners Andrew and Virginia Hodson have infused The Farmhouse and each of its eight guest rooms with classic English-country style. Rooms in the main farmhouse are all outfitted with sumptuous bedding, sitting areas and a complimentary bottle of the vineyard’s award-winning wine. Many rooms contain romantic four-poster beds, English antiques, heart-pine flooring, and all have either vineyard or pastoral mountain views. Dinner at The Farmhouse’s restaurant is a white-tablecloth affair. Chef Daniel Zbiegien’s four-course menu with wine pairings features farm-to-fork dishes, like roasted cauliflower with Romesco and golden raisins, and duck confit with braised mustard greens. Overnight guests enjoy breakfast that starts with fresh baked goods and a sweet or savory main, served with a glass of Veritas sparkling wine. The Farmhouse at Veritas offers an abundance of things to do, such as visiting historic Monticello and the area’s dozens of wineries, or one could easily never leave the property. Stroll through the vines, take a hike or visit the winery’s tasting room for small plates and a glass of Cabernet Franc or Viognier. Head winemaker Emily Pelton focuses on old-world viticulture principals that produce a balanced selection of red, white and sparkling wines. cs

PARTING SHOT
On Golden Pond Photo by Grant L. Gursky
A brilliantly setting winter sun paints breathtaking colors across the sky to the west of Ocean City. Okay, we know the Assawoman Bay is not a pond, but we couldn’t resist the opportunity — and neither could this couple, who captured the moment with their cellphone cameras. cs
