From a young age, Dana Eskridge knew that one day she would become a patient at Tilghman Orthodontics. After all, her four older siblings were each treated by Dr. Michael Tilghman and the practice’s highly-trained-and-skilled staff for various orthodontic needs.
Dana and Kersey Walters
“My parents were thrilled with the experiences and results my siblings had, so when it became my turn, there was no question about where I would go for treatment,” Dana said. Originally assessed by Dr. Tilghman at age nine, Dana was placed in the practice’s observation program for three years. “When I was 12, I received upper-and-lower braces and wore them for two-and-a-half years,” Dana recalled. “After treatment, my teeth were perfectly straight. The care I received was always fantastic and I could tell they were doing everything they could to ensure that I would have a perfect smile. But from the very beginning, Dr. Tilghman informed us that my overbite may result in orthognathic surgery in the future.” Like other former patients before her, Dana joined Tilghman Orthodontics as a member of its professional team — and was united with other co-workers who also have the unique perspectives of being a patient and professional at the award-winning practice. Dana has served as an Orthodontic Records Technician in the Salisbury and Berlin offices for the past three-and-a-half years. “As a patient, I remember always being so amazed by the staff’s attention to detail and how much effort they put into making the office experience so unique,” Dana said. “After getting an inside look at how the practice works as an employee, I am equally amazed by all of the personal touches and thoughtful actions the Tilghman’s take to make each and every patient feel cared for and at home when they visit our offices. ”When I started working at the practice, the idea of surgery was brought up to me again,” Dana continued. “I decided that it was time I go ahead and do it. While the process is difficult, and may sound scary, the outcome has made it all so worth it!” Dana’s new smile was on full display for one of the biggest and brightest days of her life — her wedding to Kersey Walters. The happy couple lives together in Salisbury. “My life has changed drastically since my jaw has healed from surgery and getting my braces off,” Dana said. “I feel so confident with my new self, and I never hesitate to show my smile anymore!”

FIRE AND FRAGRANCE HONEY WATER CANDLES FOUNDER NATALIE BLANTON USES HER CREATIVE ENERGY TO TURN CANDLE-MAKING INTO A SENSORY ART FORM Written by Olivia Minzola | Photography by Megan Steele

estled deep in the woods of Berlin is a lone wooden cottage. Inside sits the workspace of 34-year-old Natalie Blanton, owner and creator of Honey Water Candles. For as long as she can remember, Blanton has been fascinated with aromatherapy and perfumery. Her interest began in 2007, after moving to Colorado to work as a massage therapist; it led her to complete countless courses, programs and workshops, as well as study with skilled perfumers in Rhode Island and New York. Then, in 2019, after moving back to Berlin, her very own candle-making business was born.

Blanton’s inspiration tends to come from nature.
Over the past three years, Natalie has collaborated with an array of local farms, two of which are Splendid Earth Farm and Little Fields Floral. The association with the former led to the creation of one of Blanton’s personal favorite scents, Yarrow and Lavender, with each candle embellished by a sprinkle of yarrow blossoms. “It was such a unique creation,” said Natalie. “It was as if each candle had its own little bouquet on top.” Her inspiration tends to come from nature. When creating a new scent, she begins by brainstorming outside, such as in her garden. Oftentimes, she aims to mimic the smells of things one would not necessarily think of as being aromatic, such as a tomato or radish.

“A radish doesn’t really smell like anything on its own and neither does a tomato. But you can create this idea of what a radish or tomato would smell like and convey that through a scented candle. It’s an art form,” explained Natalie. Honey Water Candles makes products that are in touch with nature and environmentally friendly. Each candle consists of soy wax made from U.S.-farmed soybeans, adorned with a clean-burning cotton wick, and contains a blend of essential oils and phthalate-free fragrance. In addition, 5% of all purchases are donated to local grassroots organizations dedicated to environmental conservation. The small business is committed to preserving the unique environment of the Eastern Shore in any way it can.
WAXING CREATIVE: Every step of Blanton’s candle-making process is done completely by hand, with each individual customer in mind.
Natalie is proud of the way her candles are made — not in a factory passed along on a conveyor belt, but in a tiny cottage with a working woodstove, by her own two hands. “My workspace is very rustic,” said Blanton. “There’s no central air and, in the winter, you can feel the wind whipping between the boards that make up the walls. I like that about it, though. I like the challenges of working in this space.” Each and every step of the candle-making process is done completely by hand. She begins by blending. Then she pours, wicks, polishes, labels and packages each candle for its designated buyer. “Once the candles are made, I let them cure for two weeks before I sell them,” said Natalie. “It normally takes that much time for the fragrance to fully develop. If you were to burn your candle before then, you wouldn’t get the same ‘scent throw.’” Natalie often finds herself working alone. Still, she is aided by her husband and two young children from time to time. “I find such joy in watching my children participate,” said Natalie. “Not long ago, my daughter was in the corner, working with construction paper, and when she held up her creation, it read, ‘Honey Water’ and was a picture of the logo. When we’re on walks, they’ll pick little things, like clover, and say, ‘Look! Clover smells so good!’ They love to come up with ideas.” Now, as the world enters a new year, Natalie looks to the future of Honey Water Candles. There, she sees only the best possible collaborations and creations in store. CS

PEOPLE
At the Baltimore Sun, in the ’80s, I met Tom Horton. I was the Sunday magazine photographer; he was environmental writer. We started doing these Bay stories together for the magazine, and that developed. Now, some 40 years later, we’re still collaborating on things, on books and now on films. I just fell in love with the Bay. I’ve always been an outdoor person and was a Boy Scout and went camping, so I’m an outdoor dog, and now I just really love getting out. It’s just been combining that love of being outside and nature and an interest in photography.
The Art of Observation AFTER A STORIED CAREER, PHOTOJOURNALIST DAVID W. HARP HAS SET HIS FOCUS SQUARELY ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY Documentary photographer David W. Harp’s inspiration comes from exploring literal and figurative edges where culture and nature connect, creating the essence of what defines the Chesapeake Bay. His newest exhibition, Where Land and Water Meet: The Chesapeake Bay Photography of David W. Harp, recently debuted at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and will be on display at Salisbury University’s Guerrieri Academic Commons from January 31 to June 5, 2022. From legendary skipjacks and intimate portraits of captains and crew to images capturing marsh guts, waterfowl and watermen at work, to more contemporary digital images documenting changing landscapes and lifestyles, Harp’s body of work represents a career spent immersed in the natural world, perfecting the art of observation. Nabb Research Center archivist Ian Post recently sat down with Harp as he reflected on his career and the many changes he has witnessed on the Chesapeake Bay.
How did you first become interested in photography? What inspired you to document the Chesapeake Bay in particular? So, when I was 10 years old, you could get coupons when you bought butter. After you collected a certain number of coupons, you could redeem them for things. I redeemed coupons my mother gave me for a little plastic camera, and I used it for a good number of years, probably just as a kid going off to camp and stuff.

There are so many beautiful places on the Chesapeake. What’s your process for selecting a location? I always enjoy just seeing something I haven’t seen before or a place I haven’t seen before. I love marshes; I love kayaking. I’m a big kayaker; I love working from a kayak. In terms of picking a place, I think I prefer sort of the lowland, upstream areas. You get to the main step of the Bay, and you could be anywhere. You’re out in just water. But you get up into the marshes, and you get up into the upper parts of the creeks, and that’s where there’s this incredible diversity of life, and that’s what I photograph. Just all the little flora and fauna, and people catching things and people just getting out. I love the different seasons. It’s just change; it’s never quite the same. You can go back to the same place a hundred times, and it’s never the same. I enjoy that.

PEOPLE
HOMEBOUND Following a life that took him around the globe, documentary photographer and environmentalist David Harp is now content to stay close to home, fighting for the planet from the land he loves best.
You’ve described yourself as a journalist and not as an art photographer, but what is the distinction in your mind, and how does that shape the way that you work? I never proposed to be an artist; I grew up as a journalist. It’s telling stories that I like to do. I like to use the camera. Tom and I use this saying that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I think if you have good writing and good photography, then you can tell a really great story. You can show people and have them feel what it’s like to be there. Many of the images that you’ve taken required you to venture out into remote areas and waterways to capture the shot. Is there one particular shot or image that stands out as the most challenging? I think working in really nasty conditions is very challenging sometimes. Sometimes it’s snowing, and it’s cold, and you’re trying to keep the lens clean. Those kinds of conditions actually make the best photographs. I once did a story on a chicken house from the time the chickens were brought in as little babies until the time they were caught to take to market. I learned that it was really humid, and this was in the wintertime, so if I took the camera from the cold into this really hot, humid place, it would just steam up, and I wouldn’t be able to work for a long time. So, I learned to put my camera the night before on the heating register to keep it hot. Then, I would put it in a cooler to keep it warm and bring it into the chicken house. So, you think ahead to try to figure out what you need to do to get the photographs, and the challenge a lot of times is just like that.
KEEP YOUR FAMILY COMFORTABLE THIS SEASON WITH YOUR
So, you’ve been documenting the changing landscape of the Chesapeake Bay for over four decades. What’s the most striking change that you’ve witnessed? Well, I really do believe that the climate is changing. It’s wetter; I see trees dying. In the ’90s or late ’80s, I photographed some royal terns on a little island between Smith and Tangier Islands in Virginia. This past summer, I was out shooting something for Audubon Magazine. I was with this guy from Audubon, and I said, “Where can I see royal terns? I used to photograph them,” and he said they were gone. They’re not in the areas where I had photographed them before, and these were low beachy areas, and now they’re only found maybe at the very southern tip of the Bay or further south. So, I looked at these photographs and said these can’t be replicated now, you can’t do that. I’ve seen everything from the old wooden waterman’s boats becoming fiberglass in many cases; I’ve seen the landscape of places like southern Dorchester change dramatically in a 20-year period. Where there were forests, there is now what they call a ghost forest, just dead trees from salt water coming up, and it can kill them. I think the Bay is changing, certainly certain species. Crabs come and go; oysters have been real problematic in numbers. I just see in many cases man’s impact on the Bay and what it has done. Whether it’s nitrogen running off of farm fields or just sea-level rise. As a photographer, how do you capture that feeling? When it comes to sea-level rise, I produced a film with Tom Horton and Sandy Brown called High Tide in Dorchester, which really told that story. We use that story as a microcosm, as a hyper-local view of a worldwide problem. I’m not interested in traveling around the world and doing this anymore, but I am really interested in using my little universe here in the Bay to tell some of the stories that are bigger than the Bay. INNATE ABILITY SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD MASON D’ALEO HAS A LEGACY OF ARTISTRY BEHIND HER AND A BRIGHT FUTURE OF CREATIVITY AHEAD OF HER Written by Alison Pappas | Photography by Grant L. Gursky
A
rtistry and talent certainly run deep in local high-schooler Mason D’Aleo’s family tree. Her mother, Pam Mason, is an accomplished painter and muralist who studied at Gettysburg College and The Maryland Institute College of Art. Her father, Leo D’Aleo, is a former architect and selftaught painter. Extending back a generation, her paternal grandfather is also an artist and drew the Leaning Tower of Pisa design on Lombardi Trattoria’s infamous pizza box. With these impressively creative genes, it’s no surprise that Mason started exploring art at a very early age. In fact, there is a photograph of her as a toddler intensely fingerpainting that is proudly on display in her home studio. While she began appreciating art very early on, Mason credits a visit to New York City as a child with truly igniting her passion.

“I was on a trip with my dad, and I remember being so impressed with the work in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I just knew at that moment that art was something I really wanted to pursue,” expressed Mason. Now 17 years old, Mason has evolved into a skilled painter with a primary focus on realism. Her colorful work is currently available for purchase in high-end Berlin storefronts, such as Stuarts’ Antiques and Patty Jeans Boutique. She’s also had her paintings showcased at the Berlin Art Stroll and the Art League of Ocean City. A true Gen-Z, Mason has networked and sold a lot of her work through social media.
“I typically post an original painting after I’ve completed it on Facebook and Instagram, and people can respond to claim it and purchase it. I also sell prints copies,” shared Mason. Mason’s main art studio is located on the bottom floor of her mother’s stunning Ocean City residence, which was featured on the 2019 Sand Castle Home Tour. The studio’s tall, blue walls are lined with Mason’s detailed, lively artwork. A substantial circular mirror allows plenty of natural light to seep in, and offers a picturesque bay view. While painting, Mason often finds inspiration from music. “A lot of times, I like listening to alternative music, like Nirvana or Morrissey, while I’m painting. Other times, I’ll listen to lo-fi beats or underground sound clouds,” shared Mason. As for deciding what she wants to paint next, well, that really depends. Many of the subjects of her paintings are things that caught her eye in person and immediately sparked a desire for her to paint. She’s also had friends and family make suggestions for pieces. Mason really enjoyed painting one suggestion in particular: a harlequin tusk fish, due to the fish’s colorful striped body and striking blue teeth. Mason is currently in her final year of high school, and she is completing her education online through The Keystone School.

“I enjoy Keystone because, in addition to the core curriculum, I’ve been able to study animation. I’ve taken what I’ve learned to create my own short animations,” shared Mason. Mason has been accepted to Flagler College, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Ringling College of Art and Design — all of which are southern schools with reputable art programs. She plans to pursue her art studies and collaborate with other young artists at whichever school she decides to attend. Mason also plans to continue selling her work and extend her reach by building an Etsy profile. CS

here has been a lot of buzz surrounding one of Ocean City’s newest hotspots. Nestled in the bayside shopping center on 118th street, The Buzzed Word combines the social atmosphere of a wine-bar with the charm of a cozy bookstore. The unique concept is the creation of Mickie Meinhardt, a former copywriter who spent 12 years working in New York City before returning to her Ocean City roots last fall. Having managed many successful literary events that featured wine-and-food pairings during her time in the Big Apple, she saw the value in introducing a place where the local Shore community could come together to grow their knowledge and appreciation for both wine and literature. When designing the interior, Mickie pulled little bits of inspiration from bars and shops she cherished in the past and applied an overarching Art Deco theme. At the front hangs an Insta-worthy neon sign/logo above a snug mustard couch. The sidewalls are lined with shelves neatly stocked with a diverse, approachable collection of wine bottles and books. There is also an edgy 14-seater wine bar with a burgundy-velvet underside.

A wine enthusiast herself, Mickie curated a personal selection of natural wines, and she gladly extends her knowledge to guests seeking recommendations or further insight. While the core of the inventory comprises Spanish and Portuguese wines, regions all over the world are represented, and many of the options are not available within hundreds of miles. Additionally, the by-the-glass choices vary daily, so there are always new tastes for guests to explore. The delectable food menu features small plates, such as charcuterie and caviar, which traditionally pair well with wine. Per Mickie, the heart of The Buzzed Word is education and building trust with the community. Every other Sunday, the store hosts tasting classes that guide attendees through specific wine regions or styles. Beginning in January 2022, The Buzzed Word will also host live music and other events. CS

WITH NEARLY 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, TERRY BRADLEY SHARES LESSONS OF THE TRADE AND LIFE WITH THE NEXT GENERATION
C
onstruction is something that is bolted deep in Terry Bradley’s family history. His grandfather and great-grandfather were skilled carpenters, and Terry realized early on that he, too, wanted to pursue a hands-on career. Now with 38 years of successful woodworking experience under his toolbelt, it is safe to say that Terry’s grandfather and great-grandfather would be proud of all that he has built, both literally and figuratively. Terry was self-employed for 25 years, and during that time, he specialized in woodworking with a focus on staircases

and cabinets. He earned a reputation within the local construction scene for his precise attention to detail, and he also grew a loyal customer base. In 2009, Terry decided to leave his self-employment days behind and bring his extensive experience to the team at Tyler Building Co. — an award-winning, familyowned, local construction company. “Terry’s woodworking abilities were the best we’d ever seen. And, he had all those intangible qualities we look for, like trustworthiness and a hard-work ethic,” shared Will Tyler, co-owner of Tyler Building Company. While the transition from self-employment
to a team environment was an adjustment for Terry early on, he quickly embraced the benefits of working toward a collective goal with his crew. Unfortunately, Terry was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) two years ago, and his role has slowly transitioned from hands-on work to a customer-service role. His condition has not slowed him down, however, and he remains heavily involved in daily operations. Currently, he spends most of his workdays in the field monitoring the progress of projects and communicating with customers. He typically manages 8 to 14 jobs at a time.

“While he is physically unable to do the labor aspect, he is still one of the most important people in the company. Through his customerservice role, he has been able to keep applying all the knowledge that he has learned throughout his extensive career. Our customers love working with him,” said Will. One aspect that has brought Terry immense joy is the opportunity to mentor many young trade workers through the local Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. “It’s been rewarding to help teach these young guys and pass along everything that I’ve learned over the years. To me, well, that is what life is really about — the ability to share your knowledge and life lessons,” said Terry. While there have been countless highs and memorable projects over the years, Terry credits the most noteworthy aspect of his career as being able to return home at the end of each day knowing that his team has accomplished something that will be enjoyed by customers for years to come. DRIVEN BY FAMILY H&M BAY CELEBRATES 40 YEARS AS AN AWARD-WINNING LOGISTICS PROVIDER WHERE FAMILIES GROW CAREERS TOGETHER

alt Messick III was about 14 years old when he started working in the family business his father cofounded in 1982 out of their hometown in Federalsburg, MD. On weekends, he’d unload and pack trucks for H&M Bay, a logistics provider for lessthan-truckload (LTL) frozen and refrigerated commodities. “In the early days, we only had a few divisions that we operated, and we were focused on the East Coast,” Messick said,
relating how his dad, Walter Messick Jr., launched the company in a then “rough and tumble” industry after a career as a long-haul truck driver. “They were able to see the industry from the ground up, all aspects of it,” Messick said of his dad and cofounder Lawrence Hayman. During the past four decades, H&M Bay has expanded to 10 operational divisions, with locations across the country. Its adoption of sophisticated technology has positioned the LTL company as a forward-thinking player in the market. “We are fully automated, from
the dispatch system to our warehouse,” said Messick, COO. A number of longtime employees remember the early days — a testament to H&M Bay’s progress and commitment to its people. In essence, H&M Bay is a family business of families. “You see generations and legacy employees who have had opportunities to go elsewhere, but they stay here because we treat them like family,” Messick said, sharing how the company promotes from within.

BUSINESS
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE Frank Trego started working at H&M Bay when it first opened, and his wife, Teri, joined the business in 1991. Frank also left the long-haul trucking world for dispatch and logistics. At one time, their son Jason also worked in dispatch. “The whole company is one big family,” he said, his wife agreeing. Teri added, “Everyone cares about everyone, and we protect each other.” TJ and Sharon Adams, along with their sons Jay and Tyler, are also part of the H&M Bay family. “At a lot of companies, you’re just a number, but it’s not like that here. I can talk to the owners; they know my name, and you want to have your family here because there are good opportunities and careers,” TJ said. “I have a lot of faith in this company.” In the fast-paced logistics industry, a supportive environment is central to success. And H&M Bay has a track record of growth and recognition. H&M Bay is the Top 3PL & Cold Storage Provider by Food Logistics magazine for the 10th consecutive year. And every week, its dispatch team moves 20 million pounds of freight, with more than 7,000 shipments. “We’ve tried to stay one step ahead from a technology standpoint,” Messick said. “And, we have opened new facilities in the last 10 years to help us serve new markets, including cold-storage facilities that give us an opportunity to not only transfer temperature-controlled freight but also to store it.”

Without good people, success is not possible. “We have been fortunate to have some amazing people come through our doors during the last 40 years,” Messick said, sharing how every department and division at H&M Bay is an integral piece of the LTL logistics puzzle — from dispatch and warehouse to IT, accounting and leadership. H&M Bay has more than 230 full-time team members and 600-plus part-time employees. Bringing in family members is one way the company recruits high-performing workers. Take Brett and Joe Ketterman. Joe joined H&M Bay in dispatch, moved into a Trainer and Safety role, Director of Operations for the freight management division, and is now Risk Manager. When an opening cropped up, Joe introduced Brett to the business; he took a position in dispatch, as well. “I enjoy the opportunity to figure out how to make things work, and with Brett around, we can talk and solve problems together,” Joe said, adding that a collegial relationship with the company’s leaders makes H&M a comfortable place to grow a career. “We’ve been friends with the Messick family for many years, and we went to school with them, so we can talk about old times and laugh like we did back in the day,” Brett said. Close-knit is how Joe describes the team. “You feel like you can go to anyone and they will understand and have dealt with the same issues, and you can lay it out there and work it out together,” Brett said. Jonathan, Mike and Jordan Smith remark on the ability to scale up and take on more responsibilities in the business. “They always promote from within,” Mike said, relating how he started in the warehouse, moved into dispatch, was invited to be a supervisor and has been serving as a manager for the last eight years. Meanwhile, John is supervisor of the Seattle division and Jordan has worked four years in the warehouse.

At the end of the day, H&M Bay and its people are an integral player in the cold-food chain, enabling shelves to be stocked and people’s refrigerators to hold essentials. H&M Bay finds ways to move people into positions where they’ll excel. Sharon Adams was working part-time for the schools while her son was growing up, and by the time he was a senior, TJ said the business needed warehouse office help. “It was a great opportunity, and I took it,” she said, adding that she came on full-time and never looked back. Messick adds, “Without good, quality people, you can’t have a quality product. While we have always expected a lot from our employees, in return we look out for their well-being and give them room for growth.”

NAVIGATING WHAT’S NEXT The food-logistics industry has evolved significantly since H&M Bay opened — and like many industries, the business is challenged with customer demand for just-in-time delivery in today’s age of Amazon Prime and next-day promises. Because H&M Bay operates in the temperature-controlled LTL space, an average truckload leaving one of its facilities will make eight to a dozen stops. “It’s not like we are going from Point A to Point B,” Messick explains, adding that weather delays and the labor shortage can throw off even the most thoughtfully planned route. Constant communication, flexibility and an ability to pivot quickly to address obstacles during routes are just some of the important skills H&M Bay team members bring to the business. At the end of the day, H&M Bay and its people are an integral player in the cold-food chain, enabling shelves to be stocked and people’s refrigerators to hold essentials. Over the years, H&M Bay has built an expansive network of truckers and customers that its dedicated employees help service. Looking ahead, Messick said the company’s 40th anniversary, in 2022, will bring more growth, including facility upgrades planned for the next two to five years. “We are looking at larger cold-storage facilities and potential markets we haven’t yet dipped our toes into yet, where there might be opportunities for us,” he said. As a company, Messick said H&M Bay takes its responsibility to employees and their families seriously. “We want to continue to grow and make sure we are taking care of our people, because at the end of the day, that’s what makes us who we are.” CS

The doctor is in TidalHealth improves access with additional locations, physicians For Will Smith, who lives in Worcester County just over the Delaware line, making it to regular medical appointments has been a challenge. “I drive 45 minutes to see my doctor because I can’t find one near my house,” said Smith, who has a chronic condition that requires regular checkups and medication. “When I’m not feeling well, I certainly don’t feel like driving that far to see him, and I don’t like technology so telemedicine isn’t something I want to do.” Finding a primary care physician who can perform annual checkups and routine screenings in a timely fashion can be difficult. The story is often the same: the patient calls a busy office and holds the line only to learn the doctor isn’t accepting new patients, or that the earliest appointment is several weeks — even months — out. A study in the Journal of Primary Care & Community Health shows that from 1998 to 2018, the average wait to see a primary care physician increased from 6.7 days to 28.4 days in Sussex County. That’s no surprise as more people choose to take advantage of the area’s low taxes and proximity to the shore. As the population grows, so does the need for quality healthcare — primary care physicians who are accessible, and highly trained specialists who are well-equipped to treat the county’s aging residents. That’s where TidalHealth comes in.

With hospitals in Salisbury and Seaford — and physician offices, labs and pharmacies across the region — the health system is working diligently to make healthcare more accessible by serving the population where it resides. “Our goal is to connect our families, friends and neighbors with the care they need,” said Chris Hall, Chief Business Officer and Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for TidalHealth. “Our No. 1 job is to care for our community, and there are several projects in the pipeline to ensure we’re doing just that.” According to the Delaware Population Consortium, Sussex County is the state’s fastest-growing county, with a projected population surge by 2045 that includes an additional 46,615 permanent residents and 23,960 seasonal residents. TidalHealth has nearly 50 locations and offers care in more than 20 specialties, including cardiology, hematology and oncology, endocrinology, orthopedics and weight loss, along with more complex services like cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery. That number will only continue to grow as TidalHealth continues to adapt and change in response to the needs of its community. In recent months, TidalHealth launched robotic surgery and a thoracic oncology and lung cancer screening program at TidalHealth Nanticoke; welcomed five general surgeons in Salisbury; and onboarded well-known cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Kurt Wehberg and

campus, on a 30-acre parcel just north of town on the west side of Route 113, will be TidalHealth’s largest non-hospital-based healthcare campus to date. “With the anticipated growth of eastern Sussex County, this new campus will complement our offerings on the south end of town and bring TidalHealth’s award-winning services closer to home,” Hall said. In addition to new construction and specialties, the TidalHealth team takes care into the community every day with its community healthcare workers, who help remove social barriers to healthcare and connect patients with important resources, and the Wagner Wellness Van, which offers screenings to the un- and underinsured. “With our legacy of firsts and proven accomplishments — and our ability to extend care above and beyond our walls — TidalHealth is in a position to offer the best care right in your backyard,” Leonard said. Training the next generation of physicians TidalHealth launches graduate medical education program
The United States has a shortage of physicians, and the need is even more pronounced in more rural areas like the Delmarva Peninsula. That’s why TidalHealth has started a medical education program that will bring graduates to the Eastern Shore to become medical residents — and hopefully, permanent Delmarva residents as well. TidalHealth’s new Internal Medicine Residency Program has earned accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The program has started recruiting medical residents for the program, and the first class of new physicians will start in July 2022. “The Internal Medicine Residency program will draw new talent to Delmarva, which is always in need of new physicians. It will also give these students the opportunity to learn and grow with our facility and emerge as outstanding physicians,” said Dr. C.B. Silvia, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional. “The continuing academic advancement of our health system promotes the overall quality of our medical care and will attract other highquality medical providers to our region as well.”
The curriculum of TidalHealth’s GME program is a 4+1 schedule focused on balancing inpatient and outpatient experiences with a healthy work-life balance. The curriculum has been customized to prioritize the value of long-term meaningful relationships between the patient and their physician. The program’s schedule will promote longitudinal management of patients through uninterrupted rotations in a continuity clinic. Residents will have structured, clinical patient-centered experiences in each of the internal medicine subspecialties, ambulatory settings, and inpatient rotation. “Our goal is to recruit highly motivated physicians from diverse backgrounds with strong clinical knowledge,” said Hameem Kawsar, MD, PhD, FACP, program director for the Internal Medicine Residency program. “We will mentor each resident to fulfill their career goals successfully.” Medical students who wish to apply can do so through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). More information and applications may be found on the ERAS website. The TidalHealth Internal Medicine Residency program can be found in ERAS under the ACGME # 1402300001.

‘We’re ready to care for you when you need us most’ TidalHealth’s trauma team saves lives
The sudden onset and severity of injuries that require medical attention and have the potential to cause prolonged disability or death. Trauma. That is how professionals who see it every day define it, and here’s what it looks like — with a very good outcome. In July, TidalHealth Peninsula Regional’s trauma team saved the life of then one-year-old Jackson Robertson, who was severely injured in an ATV accident. Thanks to amazing care, the story ended well for the Robertsons; however, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, trauma is the leading cause of death for children and adults under the age of 44. TidalHealth Peninsula Regional is a Level III trauma center serving the state of Maryland and the surrounding region. More than 1,600 traumas arrived there in 2020 by ambulance or helicopter, an increase of 500 from the previous year. It is the only designated trauma center on the Eastern Shore. “We take pride in being able to treat the majority of our patients without having to transfer them to another institution,” said Trauma Program Manager Kari Cheezum, MSN, RN, CEN, TCRN. The significance of having that trauma designation, which affords our region the seven trauma surgeons on call, an 54

The next nearest trauma center is 110 miles away. “TidalHealth has invested in state-of-the-art equipment that allows our providers to give care that is equivalent to any other major trauma center in America,” said trauma surgeon Brion McCutcheon, MD, FACS and Trauma Medical Director. “In fact, past Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) data showed our hospital to be in the top 1% of age adjusted morbidity and mortality for level III trauma centers in the country.” Eight million people live in or will pass through our region each year, a lot of them tourists, and the TidalHealth trauma team has treated patients from 19 of Maryland’s 24 counties. In fact, each year, the Salisbury team cares for a growing number of patients from not only Maryland but also Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. As Dr. McCutcheon also pointed out, without TidalHealth’s trauma designation, most of the severely injured trauma patients here would be transferred to Baltimore, which is not only inconvenient for them and their families, but increases the time it takes for life-saving care to begin, which could significantly affect outcomes. “We may not know you, but we are ready to care for you when you need us the most,” Cheezum said.

Capturing the Spirit of
WINSTON CHURCHILL
WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT MYSELF AND LIFE IN ONE AFTERNOON SPENT DRINKING SCOTCH Written by Meredith Lindemon | Photography by John Farrell
W
hen it comes to drinking Scotch, it is best to remember that it is a spirit. As with all things spiritual, it’s best not to overdo it — but that’s also an understanding that we must, in this case, drink in order to learn. This time at The Stewart, I learned about the mystical nature of drinking, by way of Scotch, with Natalie Tapken, wine-and-beverage director of Bluepoint Hospitality. While there are innumerable things to memorize about Scotch, it’s best to focus on the first, second and third sips of the drink itself. Tapken explains these first three sips are like an introduction between strangers. She says, “The first is the hello; the second, how are you; the third is the ‘I like you’ part of the conversation.” With respect to these three sips, the first gives us the sometimes overpowering taste of alcohol; the second gives us the aromatics of the Scotch itself; and the third sip is the point at which we reach the conclusion as to whether we want to continue drinking this particular type of Scotch or move on to something we find more palatable.

FLAVORS
GLASSWARE & THE SCIENCE OF SIPPING Like Champagne, the type of glass you drink your Scotch out of is important. Tapken recommends paying close attention to your glassware and suggests drinking out of a pearshaped nosing glass or a tumbler. The type of glass you use enhances the nose of the drink. For less complex aromatics, Tapken recommends using a pear-shaped nosing glass and holding the glass by the stem as you nose it — or sniff it — then commence sipping. On the first sip, there’s also a process that seems mechanical before it becomes natural to the drinker. The first sip should be held for 12 seconds as you taste the Scotch with your entire tongue. Then swallow before breathing in and then exhaling. This will allow you to taste the aromatics. I was drinking a Glenmorangie, a Highlands Scotch whisky, which has vanilla aromatics indicative of its being aged in American oak barrels. As I continued to drink, we added water to the Glenmorangie, which changed the taste by removing the essence of the alcohol, transforming the vanilla into a dill-coconut.
DIVINE SPIRIT Glenmorangie’s 25-year-old single malt is an extremely rare Highland Scotch whisky of notable age and intense, full-bodied flavor.
SCOTCH, GENERALLY SPEAKING When it comes to Scotch, Tapken defines the spirit you will find at The Stewart by what it isn’t: no blends, no bourbons, no Japanese whisky. The Stewart’s range consists of only single-malt Scotch whisky from distillers in one of the five regions in Scotland (in addition to their selection of Champagne). There is a purpose for this, she says, which is to create a specific range of flavor, a definite vision that’s reminiscent of what Winston Churchill would pour to drink. The five regions include Highland, Speyside, Lowland, Campbeltown and Islay. Many of us know Highland Scotches, which are the most pleasing and most well-known to drinkers of the spirit. Speyside, home of the River Spey, are whiskies known for their peat and fruity flavor. Lowlands whiskies are lighter in character, often served as predinner drinks. Campbeltown whiskies are flavorful, rich and varied. Islay, often referred to as the “perfect” form of Scotch, is known for its fiery, peated flavors.

GOOD SWIMMERS & SMOKEY PEATS The color of the Scotch is also something Tapken discussed with me. Scotch more gold in color is aged in American oak, while the darker types are aged in European oak. As we continued drinking, we tried a Dalmore, another Highland Scotch whisky, repeating the three steps to get to know it and discovering that it starts as a burnt-orange rind before turning into something more pruney in flavor after adding water. “When someone describes a Scotch as a good swimmer, it means that it tastes good with water,” says Tapken. Some Scotch tastes better with water — while others do not. Tapken poured an Ardbeg for the third, which is a dark Islay Scotch, from the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides Islands off the west coast of Scotland. Islay Scotches are the more peaty, medicinal spirits that Adam Golinski, bartender at The Stewart, says, “I describe this taste as a memory. It tastes like camping, ribs or an outdoor fire.” And it did to me as well: The mixture of the botanicals and the slight taste of iodine gave it its smokey flavor, which kind of felt like tasting a dream of something nostalgic.

ORDERING & DRINKING SCOTCH While many people order scotch on the rocks, you wouldn’t want to do that with a better brand. “Do not add the rock,” says Tapken. If anything, Golinski adds, “keep it in the glass for 15 seconds then remove it.” The provenance of the term rock itself refers to the rocks on the River Spey in Scotland and has less to do with having ice cubes in your drink. When it comes to drinking what you just ordered, you also want to focus on your pace. Taking the time to get to know your drink in those first few sips is the critical part of understanding what you like and ultimately gaining the knowledge of what you actually enjoy drinking, which is the first few steps down the road to becoming an expert. The staff at The Stewart try to maintain this pace for patrons, helping them get to know their favorite spirit in a way that goes beyond pouring drinks into glasses, serving them and letting patrons drink without thinking about what they’re actually doing. Tapken, Golinski and the rest of the staff at The Stewart all have the kind of encyclopedic knowledge that comes from a commitment to education, which in turn gives them the ability to teach me, in one afternoon, how to learn my own tastes and what I actually enjoy. And as the spirit is analogous to life, we really shouldn’t mess around with those first three sips, because it’s not necessary to like everything we try. CS

BECKER MORGAN GROUP’S VISION FOR SHOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WINS MULTIPLE AIA CHESAPEAKE BAY AWARDS Written by Alison Pappas | Photography by Matt Wargo
LEARNING BY DESIGN
W
orcester County Public Schools recently unveiled the new Showell Elementary School in Berlin — a largescale, new construction project with a sustainability focused design. Spearheading the architectural efforts was the Salisburybased firm Becker Morgan Group. Brad Hastings, AIA, the firm’s lead for educational operations and the principal architect in charge of the Showell Elementary project, has been with Becker Morgan Group for over three decades and holds a master’s degree in architecture from Tulane

University. Hastings said the school project originally commenced with a feasibility study, the results of which indicated the best point of action would be to pursue a new facility. After the necessary funding was approved and obtained, Becker Morgan Group worked collaboratively with the school district and community to develop the educational specifications for the project. “We understood the standing that Showell Elementary School had in the community and what a treasure it was. Ultimately, we wanted the new facility to become as beloved as the former structure,” said Brad.
One of the main goals of the project was to create a design that would align with current teaching techniques but also deliver the flexibility to adapt as teaching methods evolve in the future. This led to Becker Morgan Group building a versatile layout with each individual grade level having its own communal areas that allow for easy breakout instruction sessions. To maximize instructional time, the firm integrated a circulation pattern to ensure students could quickly travel to various areas — such as the media center, cafeteria, etc. — throughout the school day.
Sustainability was also a key aspect of the renovation, and Becker Morgan Group was even awarded an AIA Chesapeake Bay Citation Award and Sustainable Design Award for the project’s environmental efficiency. While there were several interactive aspects incorporated that were designed to coincide with the latest environmentally sustainable principles, one specific example is the inclusion of a cistern that catches rainwater off the facility’s roof that is used to water its gardens. “When educational facilities are sustainable, the school district can save money on operations, and that money can be put into more important areas for the students. Ultimately, we want the new Showell Elementary facility to be there for a very long time, and we also want it to have as little of an impact as it can on the footprint of the land. Through its sustainable design, we’re able to reduce CO2 emissions, as well as other factors that will contribute to the community and society for years to come,” said Brad. Becker Morgan also infused biophilia — the study of how mankind has a deep-seated, innate connection with nature — into the design strategy. “We developed a spacious central courtyard. We also incorporated large windows in the communal areas, especially the backside of the building, so the students can observe the wooded area. It really ties everything back to the surrounding landscape and that, in turn, should improve student performance by having those connections to nature available to them,” said Brad. The facility opened to students earlier in 2021, and the reception by not only the school community but also the local community has been overwhelmingly positive. “It really warms our hearts to hear how excited the students are with the new facility and how well it’s working. This gives us a great sense of pride,” said Brad. While Brad served as the principal architect in charge, he emphasized that the design was truly a team effort. In addition to project manager Ellis F. Hammond, 8 to 10 Becker Morgan Group team members worked collaboratively and maintained constant communication with Worcester County Public Schools officials. “We have worked with Becker Morgan on a number of projects, and they have provided exceptional work every time,” said Louis H. Taylor, superintendent, Worcester County Public Schools. “They want to give us the product that we want, but part of their skill is to advise us and help us modify as needed to meet our budget. What I find most impressive is their creativity when making adjustments and their attention to detail. Their professionalism truly is top-notch.” CS

The project achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, which is recognized as the standard for measuring a building’s sustainability. This accomplishment was a first for Becker Morgan Group and Worcester County Public Schools. Designed through a highly collaborative process with teachers and staff, the school is composed of four learning community wings forming a large, landscaped courtyard used as a way finding and teaching space. Each of
the grade levels has a large commons area for breakout instruction, featuring a highly configurable volume space filled with natural lighting and views to the natural site beyond. Flexible, innovative spaces are found throughout the facility, exemplified by the ability of the stage in the cafeteria to be used for indoor, as well as outdoor audiences by way of a large, vertical bi-fold glass door. The school encourages exposure to sustainable elements and learning integral to the student experience. Creating a sense of place and a welcoming atmosphere through the use of color and positive reinforcement graphics were integral to making this facility work for younger students.

DYLAN AND HUNTER SIMONS SHARE
Brotherly Love
W
orcester Preparatory School (WPS) sophomores and brothers Hunter and Dylan Simons have followed a life model of positivity. In the last year, they have created a campaign, Only Positive Stories, to help lift others during difficult times.
70
CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2022
Dylan and Hunter were orphans in Siberia, Russia, and were adopted together at a young age by their parents, Dr. Richard and Sharon Simons. From the start, they learned a bit of positivity can go a long way, and as the boys grew, their mom would ask them to share a positive story each day to help them keep a smile along the way.
Entering high school, Dylan and Hunter thought it would be a good idea to share their optimistic outlooks by creating a website where they could share real-life encouraging stories, as well as provide a platform where others could submit their own and together help inspire an audience to live positive lives and achieve goals.
That is when Dylan and Hunter’s website, OnlyPositiveStories.com was born. “We want to share our positive attitude with others and hope to make a little bit of change in a world where you can hear complaining and negativity,” Hunter said. “We started Only Positive Stories to share positivity. We want everyone to ‘find their strong’ in whatever makes you happy.” As the website grew, Dylan and Hunter decided to add the “Find Your Strong in You” element to the campaign. “Mom always says, ‘Find your strong in yourself, not others.’ It is all about how you feel about yourself,” Dylan said. For Dylan, he found his strength in gymnastics at the age of 4. He has grown to be a Level 10 gymnast, spending at least 20 hours in the gym each week. On top of his academic and gymnastic schedule, Dylan participates on the WPS cross-country and tennis teams. Last year, Dylan received the Barry & Diane Tull Scholarship for Excellence in Character and attended the Naval Academy STEM program during the summer. He is currently the treasurer of his 10th-grade class at WPS and an A student on the “Head of School” academic list. Hunter found his strength on the soccer field. He started playing travel soccer at age 9, transitioning from practicing gymnastics also since age 4. Despite being athletic, soccer was not an immediate success. “I tried my best but wasn’t that good,” Hunter said. “I didn’t get much playing time at all. When I asked my mom why the coach didn’t believe in me, I will never forget what she said.” Sharon Simons was honest with her sons and emphasized that they had to find their strength through perseverance and practice. She promised her sons that if they put in the effort, she will be there to help them every step of the way. Hunter started lessons with a private soccer coach, as well as taking boxing lessons, with Sharon boxing by his side. Through hard work and practice, Hunter made the WPS varsity soccer team his freshman year of high school.
BROTHER-IN-ARMS Dylan and Hunter Simons derive much of their strength and courage from finding ways to empower others.
“She is my biggest cheerleader and is at every game, even if I play one minute or the entire game,” he said. Hunter continues to play varsity soccer at WPS, as well travel soccer with River Soccer Club. In addition, he plays basketball and lacrosse at WPS, is vice president of his 10th-grade class, is a straight-A student and on the “Head of School” academic list. Recently, the Simons family teamed up with Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services to hold an essay contest, having kids submit essays explaining where they found their own strengths. Many essays were submitted in which children found their strength from all areas, including art and ROTC. The winners were awarded sweatshirts and gift cards. Only Positive Stories plans on holding contests in the future with youth mentoring programs to continue helping kids share their strengths through writing essays. Those strengths being shared are being turned into shirts that can be found for sale on their Facebook page and website. The proceeds from the shirts are given to animal shelters’ youth-mentoring programs in the local community. “We just want every child to know that anything is possible and that there is always something positive in every situation,” Sharon said. Looking to the future, the Simons brothers hope for Only Positive Stories to grow nationally and have more peers join in on the efforts. For more information or to find out how you can get involved, visit their website at OnlyPositiveStories.com, their Facebook page at Facebook.com/onlypositivestories or Instagram @onlypositivestories. CLASS ACT FOLLOWING TEACHING STINTS IN FLORIDA AND LOUISIANA, A YOUNG EDUCATOR FINDS HER CAREER HOME AT THE SALISBURY SCHOOL When first-grade teacher Vanessa Fennell came to The Salisbury School in 2019, she brought with her an impressive educational background from the University of South Florida and a decade of diverse teaching experiences. She spent her first four years of teaching at a Florida school that was rated as a Top-100 school by U.S. News & World Report. From there, she transitioned to a Louisiana school, where she taught kids in an underprivileged area.

Vanessa’s husband later received a job offer from Salisbury University, so the couple relocated to the Eastern Shore. Soon after moving, Vanessa gave birth to twins and then began looking for a new teaching opportunity. “After having my twins, my perspective on the type of school I wanted to pursue completely changed, because I wanted my children to go to a school that I not only wanted to work at but also where I could take them with me. I was sold immediately on The
Salisbury School,” expressed Vanessa. On her first official day at The Salisbury School, Vanessa followed her tradition of instructing her new students to draw a selfportrait. In her past teaching positions, this first assignment often presented challenges; however, it went extraordinarily well this time. “It was the easiest first day I’ve ever had. The students were so equipped and ready to go, and they knew what they had to do. They were confident in their art skills. I think the

material,” she shared. “Vanessa’s YouTube videos have had more than 20,000 views. They definitely have gone way beyond her class and have been used by many other teachers,” shared Dr. Andrea Vandiver, head of the Lower School. Vanessa balanced her YouTube videos with live Zooms to help accommodate the different needs of the parents’ schedules and the children’s varying learning preferences. She also conducted oneon-one Zooms for children who needed additional help and interaction. While quarantining forced a physical distance, the teachers across The Salisbury School were able to come together virtually to create student clubs that covered various fun topics, such as mad libs, mysteries and origami. When students arrived back at The Salisbury School last fall, Vanessa took extra measures to help them feel comfortable as they transitioned back to in-person learning. This included decorating their desks as Jeeps to make the social distancing a little less intimidating. “I tried to keep my normal activities but looked for ways to slightly alter them to ensure they were COVID-safe,” shared Vanessa. The Salisbury School is a half-centuryold institution that provides award-winning education for pre-K through 12th grade. It is currently accepting applications on a rolling admissions basis. CS

biggest thing that stood out to me was the joy I felt from all the kids. There were no kids who looked stressed or upset. They loved being here.” As Vanessa settled in at The Salisbury School, the small group intervention opportunities stood out to her as a true differentiator from other schools. During reading and math times, she typically has four teachers in the classroom, to ensure each child is receiving the attention and care they need. The Salisbury School shares Vanessa’s outlook on the value of experiential learning, which is essentially learning by doing. With the school’s support, Vanessa infuses experiential learning into her lesson plans as often as possible. “For example, when we talked about animals and the environments they live in, the lesson included reading, watching videos and participating in partner research projects, but then we took it one step further, by going to the zoo and doing a picture scavenger hunt,” shared Vanessa. COVID-19 affected most industries; however, for education in particular, the pandemic presented extreme challenges. When quarantine restrictions first took effect, Vanessa quickly and creatively sprang into action to ensure that her students’ educational needs would continue to be met. “From week one, I started doing YouTube videos. The great thing about the YouTube videos is that my students could pause and rewind until they grasped the

The Salisbury School EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALITY FOR OVER 50 YEARS STUDENTS WHO BEGIN THEIR EDUCATIONAL CAREERS at The Salisbury School (TSS) establish an early love of learning and a sense of autonomy over their educational journeys. Small-group teaching and differentiated lessons allow students the opportunity to develop a strong academic foundation. Essential classes such as art, music, technology, science, Spanish and Mandarin help develop well-rounded children who value educational experiences that motivate problem-solving and thinking outside the box — all important skills needed in today’s world. One of the central philosophies of The Salisbury School is the benefit of experiential learning. This begins in lower school and continues in middle school, with hands-on project-based work that teaches independence and responsibility.
Computer science and STEM classes progress to a higher level in preparation for the skills needed in the upper school. TSS provides its high school students with opportunities to develop their individual interest and provides support for each to reach his or her own maximum potential. The upper school offers a wide range of AP options (17), including AP Computer Science, on-site Salisbury University college classes and TSS’ rewarding PLUS program. The college placement program is woven into each student’s schedule beginning in the 8th grade. The ever-changing process is overseen by a dedicated faculty member who collaborates with families to find their child’s perfect-fit school. e humans are fundamentally programmed to travel and explore. How else would our ancestors have walked, sailed, rode or flown to virtually every square foot of the Earth? No other species can claim that unique wanderlust. When I met Pam several years ago, I learned she had very little travel experience beyond the East Coast. As our friendship turned into a committed relationship, we talked increasingly about traveling and taking photographs, as two avid photographers often do. Plans were made, tickets were bought, reservations were secured (Pam’s genius here), and

her first visit to the West Coast became a reality in the summer of 2019. I’ve been to the West Coast many times, so I was the itinerary planner, a guide if you will, for my newcomer traveling companion. Actually, make that companions, as Pam’s 15-year-old daughter, Sarah, was adamant that she not be left out of this adventure. What Pam and Sarah did not know was that I packed an engagement ring, hidden away in a rolled up pair of socks, deep in my duffel, just in case the right spot and moment collided. So, the adventure started with a flight from Philadelphia to Portland, Oregon. With the wonders of jet travel from east to west, we enjoyed a very early breakfast in the Philly airport and midmorning coffee and doughnuts in Portland. So begins the fun.
The first stop on our first day in our rental car was across the Columbia River into Washington State. We just couldn’t be this close and not be able to say we had been in Washington. On that side of the Columbia River entrance to the Pacific, there is a very cool place named Cape Disappointment State Park. We had done our homework prior to the trip. We scoured online resources, maps, travel-advice blogs and anything else we could find that gave us insight into the kind of places we wanted to experience and photograph. This shot of Cape Disappointment captures a truly unique, out-ofthe-way spot that requires a bit of a hike to get to. This is the cove that enters the mouth of the Columbia River.

The next day, the first full day of exploring, began with an early-morning drive to Ecola State Park, in Oregon. I am a map guy (it dates to my road trips in the ’70s), so I had my trusty AAA map of Oregon open on the car’s front seat, with spots Pam and I had researched and circled back in Lewes. Ecola State Park offers an undeveloped nine-mile stretch of coastline in between the two beach towns of Oceanside and Cannon Beach. We stopped at this overlook to enjoy the typical gray, misty, coastal-Oregon morning weather and had a serendipitous conversation with a park ranger. He told us we were very fortunate to be there that morning, as the tide was exceptionally low and it was about the best day of the year to view the tide pools. Off we went toward the car, and, almost as an afterthought, he advised us: “But be very careful; when the tide begins to flood back in, it will come in very fast.”
The tide pools at Ecola are incredible — and we were indeed very lucky to have such an exceptionally low tide. Every square inch of the rocks in the intertidal zone was covered with one form or another of sea life. The sea stars and anemones were otherworldly. Their spectacular colors and abundance are a photographer’s dream come true.

Our basic travel plan was to stick to the closest main road paralleling the coast as we headed south toward California, which through much of Oregon is Rte. 101. From Cannon Beach down 101, a short nine miles, is a beautiful spot with a forbiddingsounding cove. Starting from a roadside pull-off at Oswald West State Park, we hiked through an old-growth forest of hemlocks, downhill to the beach at Smuggler Cove. This is a popular surfing spot, with whole-tree driftwood strewn about the upper beach because of strong winter storms that come out of the Gulf of Alaska. Drift logs such as these are common along the Oregon coast, and we saw them at nearly every beach we visited. Surfers had set up tents for their stays. The beaches we saw in Oregon were never crowded, and people often set up tents for stay-overs right on the beach.

From Astoria, where we stayed for the first two nights, we traveled south on Rte. 101 and stayed with friends in Waldport, then set out south again. The Heceta Head Lighthouse, which is between Yachats and Florence, is a must-stop-and-photograph subject. There is a strategically placed pull-off on 101 where probably most travelers stop for the shot. As we traveled south, the weather was decidedly better, much more sunshine and fewer low-ceiling gray clouds. The lighthouse was built in 1892-93 and now includes a B&B. The lighthouse was automated in 1963, which eliminated the need for a lighthouse keeper; the keepers’ house became the B&B.
We stayed at The Windsong Garden Cottage Airbnb in Gold Beach, where the owners were in residence next to our cottage. They are very friendly folks, and we had a nice time touring their beautiful gardens. They asked if we knew the area well (which we did not) and urged us to visit the beach at Otter Point State Recreation Area. What a find! We were a little wary as we looked at the rope that was attached to the side of the steep hillside/cliff that led from the parking area down to the beach, but we managed to lower ourselves down with all our gear just as the mist was clearing from the beach. The tide was low, which gave us a very wide area to explore across sand flats and among the rocks.

We crossed into California five days after we landed in Portland and three days after we left Astoria. Just outside of Crescent City is Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, a 10,430-acre redwood preserve with many oldgrowth trees. Without scale to judge their size, these trees might not be so impressive, but here Pam and Sarah are dwarfed by these long-lived giants. This is on the SimpsonReed Trail off Rte. 199.

Remember that engagement ring I’d stashed away in my rolled-up socks back in Delaware? I had envisioned the redwood forest as a very likely place to pop the question. So, early that morning, in Gold Beach, I hid the ring in my backpack, just in case the right moment arrived. It did. In a grove of huge redwoods, I asked Pam to sit down then fumbled around in my pack for a moment to set up my GoPro to record the event. Sarah did not know I was going to propose, but she intuitively knew something important was going down, and she recorded it too. She also took our picture right after Pam, thankfully, said yes.

We stayed the night near the Smith River, outside of Crescent City, then drove through redwoods and along the California coast to Mendocino, where we had booked a small cottage for two nights. Pam and I woke up early and headed north on CA 1, to Jug Handle State Natural Reserve. The reserve has very interesting geologic features and an equally interesting history about how it came to be protected from development. I just loved the beauty of the area and the photography possibilities. Pam and I enjoyed nearly two hours of exploring and shooting and could have stayed all day. But, Sarah was back at the cottage, and we had a lot more to see and do around Mendocino.

Our whirlwind trip ended with a flight back east, out of San Francisco. We booked a red-eye flight and arrived in town the day before the flight, which gave us about 27 hours to sightsee in the City by the Bay. This photograph is taken near The Hyde Street terminus of the cable car that runs from Powell Street to Hyde near Fisherman’s Wharf. The bay and Marin Headlands across the Golden Gate are seen in the background.

There is a vast array of architectural styles throughout San Francisco. It truly is a city with stunning buildings and inspired style. Just around the corner from the famous Painted Ladies — shown at the beginning of every episode of the TV show Full House — is a row of beautiful Victorian-style homes. This a great example of the splendor of these buildings. Boy, did we ever want to be invited inside for a tour, but no luck there. The whole area surrounding Alamo Square Park, where this photograph was taken, is recommended for exploration.

Our last full night on the West Coast included a little night photography. This is an electric trolley bus. San Francisco’s Muni transport system utilizes electric “heritage” trolleys, streetcars and buses, which add a stylish atmosphere to the streets. Bus 1050 (shown here), which was originally owned by the Philadelphia Transportation Company but later sold to Muni, has been serving San Francisco since the early 1990s. It was fitting that one of the last evening sights in San Francisco was a bus that originated in Philadelphia. The next afternoon, we drove to the airport for our plane ride back to Philly. CS

ustainability and a waterfront setting are two standout aspects of the Annapolis modern farmhouse that owners Frank and Lori Cicero built with an intention of eventually retiring there, close to their children and families. The couple found the rare, vacant lot on Weems Creek in Annapolis proper — and it’s an irregularly shaped property set in a community that once populated with 1930s cottage homes. “The landowner divided the property, tore down the cottages and created about a half-dozen lots,” said Marta Hansen, architect, AIA, LEED AP at Hansen Architects in Annapolis.

Environmental restrictions reduced the available buildable space. The site also includes a number of steep slopes. “We were limited to the impervious surface area, which was a challenge,” she explains. The solution: taking a block approach to building and connecting three sections of the home with a glass breezeway and boardwalk. The compartmentalized program includes separate wings that are public, private and open-air. The glassy gallery and boardwalk add character and welcome the outdoors into living spaces — a priority for the couple, who share a love of gardening and nature. “This enabled the footprint to skirt the sensitive parts of the site and create outdoor spaces for a variety of gardens,” Hansen describes. Another priority for the Ciceros was to achieve LEED Gold certification — a prestigious accreditation for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design the property earned, thanks to energy efficiencies, integrated stormwater management, locally sourced materials, geothermal heating and cooling, limited impervious surface areas, native plantings and pedestrian access to public transportation.

The aesthetic: classic, clean and timeless. “The home is riddled with special details that they had always wanted to include in their forever home,” Hansen relates, noting that the owner’s building industry career informed some of the materials and design decisions. In particular, Hansen points to a nautically inspired bunk room over the garage with characteristic drawer-steps that double as storage and rise between the two build-ins that provide four sleeping spaces.
A trellised terrace with boardwalk leads to a potting room with a deep, cast-concrete countertop and farmhouse sink, along with open storage shelves and reclaimed barn-wood paneling. The adjacent greenhouse is where the couple can process plant starts, and there is a bevy of raised beds on the grounds that add visual interest while naturally deterring deer. Shades of white and classic finishes, like smooth subway tiles, locally sourced stone and shaker-style cabinets, align with the farmhouse design. “The kitchen is basically the control center of the home, and it overlooks the water while opening up into the living and dining rooms,” Hansen says. “It really is the heart of the home.” The main section of the home is elevated from the waterfront and connects to a pavilion featuring an outdoor fireplace and comfortable seating, where the Ciceros, family and guests can take in the waterfront views. The home won two 2021 American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards for Design Excellence and Sustainability. And it’s exactly the space and place the couple imagined retreating and retiring. “Overall, the design is timeless — it’s a classic,” Hansen said. CS

PARTING SHOT
Snow-Packed Photo and text by Tony Pratt For many resort visitors who only see our beach towns during summer, snowstorms here are hard to imagine. They’re mostly familiar with hot, crowded beaches and people-lined boardwalks in search of lunch and a refreshing, cold beverage — not that same setting with six inches of fresh snow covering them. This departing storm and accompanying breaking sky left a unique and vacant scene at the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, where the iconic Dolle’s Candyland sign once stood. CS
