BUILD. PRESERVE. In helping our clients build and preserve their wealth, we’re often reminded of the iconic East End Lighthouse. From the time it cast its first light in 1885, it served as a vital navigational beacon for maritime vessels. Today, this landmark continues to shine as a symbol of guidance, perseverance and commitment.

Over the last 19 years, I have heard the objection from clients that the holidays are not a good time to sell, when in actuality, there are many reasons why you should sell your home during the winter months. With the lowest interest rates ever, buyers who can now work from anywhere have fueled the demand for our resort market, all leading to the perfect combination to maximize your selling ability. – Ryan Haley

1 Less competition which allows for your home to stand out

due to: - An already extremely low inventory market - Economics of supply and demand allowing for top dollar

2 Buyers need to take advantage of purchasing for end-of-year tax purposes

5 Flexible schedules since more people are off and have more time to look at properties

6 End-of-year job transfers with relocation 7 Buyers purchasing during the winter months are more serious 8 Year end financial bonuses and payouts

3 Most homes show best when decorated and comfy

9 Show your home’s winter readiness

4 Winter sales are often quick and profitable

10 Growing families looking to upgrade

We’re incredibly honored. Coastal Style Magazine was recently named Best City and Regional Magazine by Niche Media as judged by a panel of industry experts from the prestigious Newhouse School at Syracuse University!

“Highly, highly regarded for its production quality, content and photography, its owners still decided to successfully rebrand in 2019 to navigate from a heavier advertorial content style to more storytelling-focused content that celebrates the region’s history, people and traditions. The judges were very impressed with the depth of content that speaks to both the visitors, as well as longtime residents, which is always a tricky balance for any city/regional magazine. Congratulations, Coastal Style! Great Work!”

EYE-OPENING Global Vision 2020, along with its network of partners, has delivered 60,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses in 50 countries around the world.

T

he world’s largest unmet disability is poor eyesight, with at least one billion people who have a near- or distance-vision impairment, according to the World Health Organization. A small, award-winning nonprofit organization in Easton is focused on reducing that number substantially, through an innovative solution aimed at ending this perennial global condition. Global Vision 2020 was founded in 2009 by J. Kevin White — a U.S. Marine (Ret.) and Naval Academy graduate — to provide prescription eyeglasses to people in the most remote areas on earth. His quest began while serving in the military, overseeing humanitarian assistance programs for the Department of Defense in Africa and Eastern Europe. White was startled by the inefficiency of the distribution of donated eyeglasses. He watched those who needed a prescription walk away from help rather than accept glasses that did not fit their face, were embarrassingly unstylish, or choose frames they liked with prescriptions that made their vision worse. Was there a better way to help people, with dignity and respect, instead of foisting cast-off glasses on them as a way to meet their needs? Being a natural problem-solver, he considered the options, and an idea began to form that could meet this massive need.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

LIVE AID Global Vision 2020’s recent humanitarian mission to rural regions of the Republic of Botswana provided prescription eyeglasses to hundreds of school children and staff members.

To date, Kevin White and Global Vision 2020 have worked with 45 different organizations in 50 countries, supplying 60,000 pairs of eyeglasses to many who have never had a pair. Eyeglasses have been delivered to students, the elderly in rural villages, men who drive and women who sew for a living — all of whom were struggling to thrive because their eyesight was deteriorating.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

After he retired from the Marine Corps, White continued to be involved in the humanitarian mission of helping people with refractive error (the need for prescription eyewear) receive affordable prescription eyeglasses. The biggest barriers to solving the global poor-vision epidemic are access to a network that can deliver the eyeglasses, the costs of the exam and the glasses themselves. But White’s simple yet practical idea leaps over the seemingly insurmountable barriers and meets the needs of patients in areas so remote, they are forgotten by most of the world. His research and dogged determination led to his invention of the innovative USee Vision Kit™ — a simple, lightweight and easily transportable device that works like a pair of binoculars. The USee is a self-refraction tool that allows patients to dial in clear vision while looking at an alphabet-free eye chart. A colorcoded lens bar moves up or down with the turning of a dial. The reading on the lens bar corresponds to a particular lens. The correct lens snaps into the lightweight, stylish frame, and after a final vision test, the person is provided with prescription eyeglasses. The entire process is complete in only minutes, with a cost of less than $5 per patient.

30

CoastalStyleMag.com • Nov/Dec 2020

LIFE-CHANGING MOMENTS Global Vision 2020’s USee Vision Kit is a time-and-costeffective method to provide prescription eyeglasses to individuals in a matter of minutes for just $5 per pair.

To date, White and Global Vision 2020 have worked with 45 different organizations in 50 countries, supplying 60,000 pairs of eyeglasses to many who have never had a pair. Eyeglasses have been delivered to students, the elderly in rural villages, men who drive and women who sew for a living — all of whom were struggling to thrive because their eyesight was deteriorating. As this year comes to an end, there is the promise of a new, more expansive venture that will provide clear vision to many more people. Global Vision 2020 is working with a global corporate social responsibility partner to provide eye screenings using the USee Vision Kit to every high school student in the South American country of Guyana. Students needing prescription eyeglasses will be provided a new pair of Global Vision 2020’s easily assembled glasses. With one project, the lives of tens of thousands of people will be changed. Kevin White’s desire to eradicate poor vision around the world moved him into action. Quietly, without ostentatious gimmicks, only clinically verifiable, life-changing results, his system is transforming the lives of men and women, young and old, one pair of glasses at a time. cs

Adapt, Respond and Inspire THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION CHAMPIONS THE ROLE OF PHILANTHROPY THROUGH AN UNPRECEDENTED YEAR

J

ust like a changing tide, the needs of our local community evolve over time, and when necessary, we must adapt. At the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, responsiveness and inspiration have always been important principles, but through recent events, these characteristics have been critical in guiding the philanthropic work of the Community Foundation. Serving Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties, the Community Foundation strengthens the Lower Shore community through grants and capacity building for nonprofits and scholarships for students. The Foundation recognizes that within a community, there are needs large and small that when met, make the place we call home better for everyone. As the only public foundation dedicated to regional philanthropy, the Foundation has granted more than $89 million to the community since 1984. “We are unique in our ability to make an impact in so many diverse areas of community need,” said Community Foundation President Erica Joseph. “Our grant making encompasses the wishes of our donors — the programs, scholarships and nonprofits they wish to support — also our discretionary grant making, which allows us to be responsive to emerging challenges we are facing here and now.”

32

FUNDING MATTERS Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore Treasurer Todd Hershey, upper left, and President Erica Joseph display a check demonstrating its annual grant power for local nonprofits.

Through a turbulent year, the Community Foundation, like many others, had to quickly adapt to world events. Despite the uncertainty, the Community Foundation supported over 500 nonprofit programs across the charitable spectrum this past year. These grants made a difference for children, healthcare, veterans, education, the arts, animal welfare, the environment, food security and many other initiatives. As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, the Community Foundation leapt into action, seeing local needs met as donors and philanthropic partners from around the region rallied together through its efforts. Almost immediately, the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund was created, which enabled donors to come together, with CFES serving to identify urgent needs.

These contributions ensured valuable services were available and that a helping hand was extended to those who were at risk. The Emergency Response Fund supported first responders and essential workers, provided resources for vulnerable populations and funded technology for critical programs that keep vital services active. “While community needs may change over time, one thing that will never change is our commitment to being a part of what’s good in our region,” Joseph said. “There is still more we can accomplish together.” The power of philanthropy is amplified when it inspires others, and the Community Foundation continues to do just that year after year. By adjusting course to respond as needed, the Community Foundation remains the steady vessel dedicated to building local nonprofit capacity, investing in future generations and inspiring donors to embrace their passions through charitable giving. THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

LOVE & HONOR Coastal Hospice encourages you to honor a loved one this holiday season through its Angel Appeal

E

ach year, Coastal Hospice encourages its Lower Shore neighbors to be “angels” by including the organization in their holiday giving, through the Angel Appeal campaign. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, angel ornaments are hung on Coastal Hospice Christmas trees displayed across the region, and each is personalized with the name of someone a donor wants to honor or memorialize. Donor Kathleen Abercrombie participates in Angel Appeal because of a strong personal connection. “For many years, I had a general awareness of the services Coastal Hospice provided our community, but it was not until a family member needed care that I truly understood the scope of what Hospice provides, not only for the patient but for the family as a whole,” said Abercrombie. “My husband’s lovely grandmother, Joanna Cato, was blessed to spend her final days at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. Her birthday, November 28, always coincides with the annual Angel Appeal and is a wonderful

36

CoastalStyleMag.com • Nov/Dec 2020

opportunity to both remember her and help others to receive the care and support we did in 2008.” Angel Appeal helps support vital Coastal Hospice programs, such as offsetting room-and-board costs at Macky & Pam Stansell House and Coastal Hospice at the Lake, and sustaining the organization’s yearlong Bereavement Program. “Canceled fundraisers and higher-than-usual census numbers have made this Angel Appeal even more critical,” said Tammy Patrick, director of advancement for Coastal Hospice. “While the medical care we provide is covered by Medicare and insurance, there are gaps, especially for low-income and indigent patients. Our annual Angel Appeal delivers crucial financial support.” Donations may be made a number of ways. Those on the Coastal Hospice mailing list will receive a package by mail that will include the commemorative angel ornament, shown here. The donor can add the name of their loved one and return it in the envelope provided. Those who do not receive the mailing can call the office, and one will be sent. Or donations can be made through the Coastal Hospice website (coastalhospice.org/angel) or via the new texting program (text “ANGEL” to 345-345). Using any of these methods, the donor can provide the name of their angel, and Coastal Hospice will write it on the ornament, or the ornament can be sent so that it can be written in person by the donor and then returned. Then, from November 30 to December 31, WMDT’s Good Morning Delmarva will share the names of some of the angels, a segment many honorees, donors, family and friends look forward to. Angel Appeal launches during National Hospice and Palliative Care Month in November, which recognizes the tremendous efforts made by caregivers during COVID-19. “It is fitting that we take this moment to bring attention to those within the hospice and palliative care community who have worked relentlessly throughout this pandemic,” said Alane Capen, president of Coastal Hospice. “That is one of the many reasons that makes this campaign so special. Those angels represent the love of those they have lost and those who have made a difference in each donor’s life. As we watch those trees fill, it fills us with joy and buoys the spirit of the community, which is a gift in its own way.” Learn more by visiting CoastalHospice.org/Angel or by calling 410-742-8732. cs

ED NABB’S DESIRE TO SHARE THE SPIRIT OF THE HOLIDAYS WITH THE PEOPLE OF TANGIER ISLAND STILL SOARS MORE THAN 50 YEARS LATER THROUGH THE FAMED HOLLY RUN

M

ore than 50 years ago, while having lunch on Tangier Island, Cambridge attorney Ed Nabb discovered that there were no holly or evergreen trees on the secluded isle, due in part to centuries of sustained storms and rising sea levels. It was December of 1968, and with the Christmas season approaching, Nabb, who was also a pilot, soon flew back with two boughs of holly for the citizens of this remote land. Nabb gave those first offerings to the Swain Memorial Methodist and New Testament churches. At one, according to published reports, “After receiving the holly, we draped it around the altar in the church, but the children would take the berries off when they were having their Christmas program,” Tangier Island native Virginia Marshall said. “They would become distracted and forget their lines. So, now we place the holly in the church windows and in two white urns outside the church.”

Beginning in 1975, a progression of Santa Clauses joined what had become known as the Holly Run — the most famous being Ocean City’s Jim Schultz, who played the part during some town functions. Schultz, a cab driver at the resort, saved a portion of his modest income to buy gifts for the children on the island. His arrival as Santa Claus was anticipated by young and old alike, until his passing shortly after the Holly Run of 2012. In recent years, Santa Claus has been played by Ralph Hoover of The Plains, VA. Today, the annual event is organized by the Chesapeake Sport Pilot Flight School from its Stevensville facility with more than 100 volunteers and 50 registered aircraft — the maximum Tangier Island’s airport can accommodate. Pilots and volunteers gather together in the Swain Methodist Church with the island’s residents to share a meal and fellowship, including discussing how locals

are coping with the challenges of living in an isolated community. The event concludes with the group singing of Christmas carols and reciting of the Pilot’s Prayer. Ed Nabb Jr., also a Cambridge attorney, is an honored guest. This year’s event will be modified in size due to the pandemic, but planners insist holly will still be delivered to the island. cs

Give yourself the gift of good health Regular checkups and routine screenings are important

Health screenings and checkups are important for people of all ages, but it can be helpful to have an idea of when you should get different types of screenings, so you can be proactive and make sure you’re doing everything you can for your health. Everyone should have an annual physical — it’s the best way to keep an eye on important health indicators such as blood pressure and cholesterol. Having a primary care provider who you see every year is a vital piece of the health puzzle. A regular doctor will be best able to keep track of your changes from year to year, and can also be the provider you turn to when issues arise throughout the year. Knowing your medications and medical history, he or she will be in the best position to truly understand your needs.

TidalHealth is dedicated to the health of your entire family, caring for all ages. Our primary care providers manage chronic conditions and are available for preventative care. They are supported by a robust network of highly trained specialists. To learn more, visit mytidalhealth.org. 42

Stay healthy with regular screenings By Chris Snyder, DO Blood Sugar/Diabetes Screening: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for abnormal blood glucose and type 2 diabetes in adults 40 to 70 years of age who are overweight or obese, and repeating testing every three years if results are normal. Individuals at higher risk should be considered for earlier and more frequent screening. Dr. Chris Snyder is Chief Quality Officer at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional.

To stay healthy and well, it’s important to schedule regular checkups with your primary care physician and get routine screenings. The following screening list is for general use. Talk to your doctor about your family health history and risks, as they may request earlier or more in-depth screenings if you are at a higher risk. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that people over 55, especially those who have a history of smoking, have a one-time (not annual) screening for weakness in the aortic wall. Men ages 65-75 who were or are currently smokers are at the highest risk. The screening is a simple, painless ultrasound. TidalHealth Peninsula Regional offers these screenings for free to those who qualify. Call 410-543-7123 to make an appointment. Blood Pressure: Blood pressure checks should be performed annually at your regular checkup.

Cholesterol: Cholesterol should be checked annually once you are age 35 and older, or if you have elevated blood cholesterol levels. Heart: TidalHealth’s Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute offers free heart disease risk assessments that include a fasting lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL, risk ratio and glucose), ankle/brachial index, resting 12-lead EKG, body fat/ body mass index, blood pressure and pulse oximetry testing and more. Call 410-543-7026 to make an appointment. Insurance is not required. Lung: According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States. TidalHealth offers lung cancer screenings with the use of low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan. This test is offered to people at a high risk for lung cancer. Using much less radiation than a typical CT of the chest, it can detect small nodules, which are not seen on a screening chest x-ray. To learn more, call 410543-7012.

Peripheral Artery Disease: For people over 55 with risk factors (high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, family history) or symptoms of vascular disease (leg pain when walking, numbness in leg or foot, stroke-like symptoms, unexplained abdominal or back pain), TidalHealth Peninsula Regional offers free screening for PAD performed in conjunction with an ultrasound to screen for AAA. Call 410-543-7123 to schedule a free screening if you are at risk. Vaccinations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says everyone should get an influenza vaccination annually. Adults need a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) booster every 10 years; shingles vaccinations are recommended for people over age 50; and pneumococcal vaccines, which can help prevent pneumonia, are recommended for people 65 and up.

Feeling ill? Consider your options Flu season is upon us and this year there’s another virus to look out for. To protect yourselves and others from COVID-19, it’s important to choose your healthcare provider wisely when you’re feeling ill. The Emergency Department at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional is the sixth busiest in Maryland, and removing unnecessary visits will reduce wait times and make the experience less complicated and more manageable for patients with a true emergency. Urgent care centers — like Your Doc’s In, which TidalHealth partners with at its South Salisbury Boulevard location — were established to complement a hospital’s emergency department. “If you can be put in a car and driven to an ED, I believe you can be treated at an urgent care center 99 percent of the time,” said Dr. Walter Gianelle, CEO of Your Doc’s In. “Urgent care can handle a much broader spectrum of illnesses and injuries than just colds and scrapes, including things like lacerations, COPD, asthma attacks and orthopaedic injuries. The care is of equal quality, cost effective, and most times delivered in a more timely fashion.”

44

CoastalStyleMag.com • Nov/Dec 2020

Another option that benefits patients is the one most overlooked: the family doctor. Patients will often say during an ED visit that they “didn’t want to bother their doctor with a call,” but on the contrary — physicians welcome those. “As primary care physicians, we know our patients better and we are in a much better position to take care of their problems. This improves appropriate care, provides continuity of care, avoids unnecessary medication and testing and also allows us a chance to continue to provide preventive care and education,” said Dr. Vel Natesan, a physician in private practice in Salisbury. “We are in a better position to coordinate care between ancillary services like home health care, physical therapy and specialty referrals.” Healthcare providers agree: your primary care provider should be your first point of contact for most medical problems; you get the most efficient care because they personally know you and your medical history.

To learn more, or to make an appointment with a primary care provider near you, visit mytidalhealth.org.

Should I visit the Emergency Room? If you are experiencing any of the following life-threatening problems, you should head to the nearest hospital Emergency Room or call 911. • Sudden chest pain • Sudden numbness in the face, arm or leg • Seizures • Inability to breathe • Sudden severe headache • Severe abdominal pain

COVID-19 vaccine: Are we getting close? Dr. Robert L. Joyner provide a way to limit the spread of disease while the efforts of scientists to advance therapeutic interventions and vaccine development continue.

Robert L. Joyner, Jr. PhD, RRT, RRT-ACCS, FAARC, is Director of TidalHealth’s Richard A. Henson Research Institute.

Not since 1981 with the emergence of an illness causing human immunodeficiency has science, medicine, and politics captured the attention of the world as it has with the emergence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the illness known as COVID-19. In the beginning of 2020, the United States saw an emergence of the COVID-19 virus that causes breathing difficulty, which has led to critical illness and death around our planet. While we might wish they were, science and medicine are not clairvoyant and need time to evaluate data to make recommendations. We are benefiting from 21st century science as it took only a few weeks to identify the virus that causes COVID-19 and about a month to provide recommendations that significantly reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19; social distancing and wearing masks. Although these recommendations do create a burden on society, they also

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional has been at the forefront of this public health crisis since the beginning. To protect our patients and their families, interventions and policies were implemented quickly, including structural changes within the building, requirements of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), limiting visitation, and assessing those with symptoms in outdoor structures specifically designed for care of patients with COVID-19-related illness. Working with industry and academic sponsors, the TidalHealth Richard A. Henson Research Institute has brought state-of-the-science opportunities to the Eastern Shore, providing our physicians’ additional options in the care of the sickest of patients. Beginning with Remdesivir, dexamethasone, convalescent plasma, and most recently aerosolized sargramostim, TidalHealth is able to offer the best care to its COVID-19 positive inpatients. Our community has experienced significant critical illness and death over the past nine months, with some communities being particularly hit hard. Across Delmarva, there have been approximately 11,000 cases and 300 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Through its collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research

Network, TidalHealth Peninsula Regional and the Richard A. Henson Research Institute are working to bring a COVID-19 vaccine trial to the Eastern Shore. Having a vaccine is something we are all anticipating as a way to eradicate this disease. It is important to keep in mind that this pandemic started approximately 10 months ago and treatment of those infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus has improved dramatically across those few months. The coming vaccine holds the promise to return us to life as we remember it, but discovery of a vaccine will take some time. Once a safe and effective vaccine is developed, it will take significant time and effort to vaccinate the 330 million people in the United States. It took two and a half years from the initial identification of symptoms to the discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). While the process of defeating COVID-19 is similar to that of HIV, 21st century medical science has increased the pace at which discoveries are made. Innovations in science, technology and clinical research have compressed the timeline of virus discovery to reasonable treatment to a matter of months. The TidalHealth Richard A. Henson Research Institute provides a peerless resource on the Eastern Shore that supports clinicians and patients in their pursuit to deliver and receive the best healthcare possible.

TidalHealth performs first MitraClip New procedure is an alternative to open heart surgery David Venable was 9 years old when he repaired his first engine. He had a natural knack for it, and it led to a lifetime of fixing and tinkering — as a mechanic for the Delaware State Highway Administration, and back at home on the tractors that plowed the family farm in Greenwood, Delaware. But at age 86, Mr. Venable was in some need of repair himself. “I had a terrible burning sensation in my chest, and it wouldn’t go away,” he said. “I knew I needed some work done.” He was right — TidalHealth doctors received him after a trip in an ambulance, and he underwent a bypass. While performing the bypass, one of the cardiovascular surgeons who performed the procedure, noticed Mr. Venable had a very leaky mitral valve. The leaky valve caused blood to flow backwards into the heart, which can cause serious fatigue and shortness of breath. But to repair the valve in addition to the bypass would have been too much surgery for Mr. Venable to handle. 46

CoastalStyleMag.com • Nov/Dec 2020

“I wanted to make sure he came through all right,” Dr. Todd said, “and I knew we could come back and fix the valve later.” The bypass was in April. As Mr. Venable recovered from the procedure, Sheri Norman, his niece, said waiting for the mitral valve procedure was scarier than having it performed. On September 21, Mr. Venable became the very first person at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional to have a MitraClip procedure. Open-heart surgery is the gold standard for treating mitral valve regurgitation, but in some cases the risks for surgery are too great, especially for people who have had previous procedures, or are older, like Mr. Venable. Until now, those patients could only rely on medical treatment to try to cope with their condition. But with the debut of the MitraClip procedure, there is a lessinvasive option. In the new procedure, the patient receives general anesthesia and doctors access the heart through a vein in the patient’s leg. Guided by

an ultrasound device to take pictures of the heart, a delivery system is advanced up the vein to the heart, passes through a wall in the heart and allows the surgeon to deploy the MitraClip, which attaches to the mitral valve and allows to close more completely, helping to restore normal blood flow through the heart. Patients are able to be discharged usually in 1-3 days. Mr. Venable went home the next day — and, he said, was ready to be back to work on his engines. “But I’ve tried to follow the doctor’s orders and take it easy while I’m healing,” he said. He confessed to helping his wife of 67 years, Irene, with the housework when he was supposed to be recuperating. “It has helped me a lot — I can’t even tell I had anything done except for feeling better,” Mr. Venables said.

FRIENDSGIVING

WARM WELCOME Rebecca Patrowicz hugs close friend Lisa Davis as Lisa and her husband, Eric, arrive for a Friendsgiving get-together at the Patrowiczes’ residence last November.

CELEBRATING FRIENDSHIPS In the spirit of the season, Dr. Jonathan & Rebecca Patrowicz hosted a pre-COVID-19 Friendsgiving dinner at their beautiful home in Berlin Photography by Grant L. Gursky Dr. Jonathan and Rebecca Patrowicz have a deep and compassionate connection with the patients and staff of Jonathan’s family-medicine practice. It’s no surprise that similar bonds extend to their relationships with family and friends. We saw this firsthand when they hosted Michael and Teresa Kinhart and Eric and Lisa Davis for a Friendsgiving dinner in November 2019.

What does your ideal Friendsgiving consist of and why? Friendsgiving/Thanksgiving is a holiday of simply expressing gratitude for those who are part of our lives. Therefore, our ideal Friendsgiving would consist of those special people, good food and a sunny day with slightly warmer temperatures, so we can spend time outside.

What are your most special Thanksgiving memories? As a child, my most special memories of Thanksgiving were observing and helping my mom and dad prepare for the day. It is a holiday they typically hosted, and our entire family would come and spend the day together. I could see how much love was driving all that they were doing in the preparation to ensure all made special memories.

A TOAST TO FRIENDSHIP Now more than ever, Rebecca said, it is important to not only celebrate and cherish friendships, but to express your feelings of how much they mean to you.

FRIENDSGIVING

FAMILY FRIENDS After more than 20 years living on the Eastern Shore, the Patrowiczes have formed many deeply meaningful friendships with couples like the Davises and the Kinhants — who have become like family.

Describe your feelings about hosting friends for dinner at your home during the holiday season. Jonathan and I enjoy hosting friends for the holidays, and I know this directly comes from the memories my parents created for me and seeing their joy in helping create memories. Having been on the Eastern Shore for 20 years, we have been very blessed in meeting such wonderful people, who have all become like family to us. After each holiday we share together, we all have the same sentiment: “We love the memories we are creating for our families.”

50

CoastalStyleMag.com • Nov/Dec 2020

What are your favorite aspects of the holiday and why? With more depth, what I simply like about Thanksgiving is the premise: taking a day to reflect and express gratitude. On the lighter side, I really like stuffing and pumpkin pie. What ideals and Thanksgiving traditions do you and Jonathan hope your daughter, Emily, continues one day with a family of her own? Great question. First and foremost, understanding the meaning of the holiday, which, history tells us, was truly about the unification and relationships being established between two cultures. History has told us how that story ended, though we have not lost sight of the intention.

OVID-19 has wreaked havoc on countless local businesses and nonprofits, including the Art League of Ocean City, which was forced to cancel many of its crucial fundraising events that drive capital for its classes, programs and community-outreach efforts. “Our devoted drop-in painting class suggested publishing a cookbook filled with art and selling it as a fundraiser,” said Rina Thaler, executive director of the Art League of Ocean City. “We thought it was a great idea and hope the public does, too. It was a clever idea, and we dedicated this book to them.” We Made It combines delicious recipes, beautiful artwork and genuine family stories of many local artists. Organizers hope it promotes artistic expression and an appreciation for the creative arts in the greater Ocean City community.

Hail to the Chef MATTHEW WENDEL’S NEW BOOK IS AN ENGAGING AND ENTERTAINING GLIMPSE INTO THE HIS TIME COOKING FOR THE BUSH FAMILY IN TEXAS AND WASHINGTON, DC

M

atthew Wendel describes himself as a man whose story is rooted in humble beginnings, hard work, perseverance and a desire to fulfill his call to duty. From working as an investigator with the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and the Texas Attorney General’s Office, he made the leap to the White House, the U.S. Department of State and Blair House. Matthew has entertained and cooked for the first family during the George W. Bush administration, for world leaders at Camp David and the Bush family’s Prairie Chapel Ranch near Crawford, TX, as well as on staff for the U.S. ambassador to the Czech Republic. In his new book, Recipes from the President’s Ranch: Food People Like to Eat, he and The White House Historical Association invite readers on his personal journey through his professional life — most notably his time spent with the Bush family. Through captivating photography and storytelling from behind-the-scenes of George W. Bush’s presidency, including September 11th, family holidays and cooking for world leaders, Wendel has brilliantly and caringly crafted a must-read for history lovers and food lovers alike. And that’s before he shares a host of personal recipes and cooking tips.

Thanksgiving Turkey Serves: 10-12

“Don’t be intimidated by cooking a turkey. It is easier than you think. First, find the size turkey that is right for your family. I usually cooked a turkey of about 15 pounds to feed 10-12 people. There are several ways to cook a turkey, but here is the method that has worked the best for the Bushes’ Thanksgiving turkey. Consult a guide to let you know exactly how long your turkey should be in the oven.”

MONUMENTAL APPLAUSE The Bush family and guests cheer as the author brings out a second serving of the fresh free-range turkey and side dishes he made for their Thanksgiving meal, November 24, 2005.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1 15-lb fresh, free-range turkey Kosher salt and black pepper, freshly ground ½ small yellow onion 1 celery stalk, halved 1 carrot, halved 4 garlic cloves 3 sprigs each: fresh parsley, rosemary, thyme, sage ½ apple, quartered ½ lemon, quartered 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp seasoned salt 2 tsp paprika 2 tsp powdered ginger 6 slices smoky bacon 1 turkey-size cooking bag

Prepare turkey the night before by removing any giblets that are inside the cavity. Under cold water, rinse turkey thoroughly inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels. Next, place turkey in a baking pan with a rack so that air can move all around. Cover with paper towels and refrigerate overnight. When ready to start cooking the turkey, preheat oven to 350°. Salt and pepper the cavity of the turkey and then stuff the cavity with onion, celery, carrot, garlic, herbs, apple and lemon. Season all sides well with the four seasonings. Lay the bacon across the breast portion of the turkey. Bake according to the directions listed on the cooking-bag box. When turkey is done, let it rest for at least 15 minutes before carving.

Sweet and Spicy Mashed Sweet Potatoes Serves: 6-8 Adapted from a recipe by Bobby Flay

“This recipe was a Bush family favorite and one that I often made as a side dish for Thanksgiving dinner at Prairie Chapel Ranch.”

INGREDIENTS 4-5 lbs of sweet potatoes, washed well ⅓ cup maple syrup ¾ cup Greek yogurt 3-4 tsp purée from canned chipotles 1½ tsp ground cinnamon Kosher salt to taste

ynthia Graubart has authored 11 cookbooks in which she shares her passion for helping families spend more time at the dinner table together. Her latest comes just in time, as families are facing the new reality of being unable to gather in the traditional ways due to COVID-19 precautions. “Families are used to creating one dish that serves 16 to carry to Aunt Kathy’s for the big meal and have never had to make a small Thanksgiving dinner. I wanted to help those whose recipes served a crowd find a way to bring joy and right-sized recipes to their table,” said Graubart, who has appeared on Fox & Friends and Hallmark’s Home & Family among other TV show credits. Released by Empire Press, Thanksgiving for Two (or Four) is available for sale on Amazon. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Frontline Workers Fund, which provides financial support to critical workers of the COVID-19 crisis. Heat a large skillet with a lid over mediumhigh heat. When hot, add the oil and butter. Season the turkey thighs on both sides with salt and pepper. Brown the thighs in the hot fat, skin-side down first, until golden. Turn and brown second side about 3 minutes. Remove thighs to a plate. Add onion and celery to the same skillet and cook 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the mushrooms and cook about 4 minutes, to lightly cook the mushrooms. Stir in the wine and sage and scrape up any bits in the pan. Return the thighs to the pan, skin-side up. Pour enough stock into the pan to come halfway up the side of the thighs. Reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook about 90 minutes, until the thickest part of the thigh reaches 175°F on an instant-read thermometer. Remove the thighs to a clean platter. Whisk together the cornstarch and water in a small bowl to form a slurry. Stir this slurry into the remaining sauce. Increase the heat to medium-high. Stir the sauce until it boils. Remove from heat and return thighs to the skillet or pour the sauce into a serving vessel and serve alongside the thighs. Garnish with extra sage leaves if desired.

’Tis the Season in St. Michaels THE HISTORIC TOWN ONCE AGAIN DEMONSTRATES ITS YEAR-ROUND APPEAL, AS EVIDENCED BY ITS IMPRESSIVE HOLIDAY CALENDAR

CoastalStyleMag.com • Nov/Dec 2020

M

aryland’s Eastern Shore is home to many picturesque towns, but none embody an old-fashioned holiday feel quite like St. Michaels. With its quaint shops, world-class dining and jolly spirit, St. Michaels is transformed during the holidays into a Christmas wonderland. Established in 1677 and named after the town’s Episcopal Church, St. Michaels is located on a long stretch of land, just past Easton, on the Miles River. St. Michaels has always been a destination for people looking to escape the noise and congestion of the city, with visitors as far back as the 1880s arriving via steamships to stay in summer cottages.

SAFE HARBOR St. Michaels Business Association president Kim Hannon said town businesses have worked hard to establish precautions in order to welcome visitors back and that she expects a wonderful holiday season for its merchants, hoteliers and restaurateurs.

But it wasn’t until the 1970s that tourism really took off as the maritime museum, boat tours and more hotels and inns were established. Today, St. Michaels is renowned as a weekend destination for the well-heeled crowd, who flock to the posh Inn at Perry Cabin and enjoy fine dining at restaurants like Bistro St. Michaels, Theo’s and 208 Talbot. St. Michaels has also evolved into a family destination that offers history at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, boat trips with Patriot Cruises, bike rentals and family accommodations at resorts like the St. Michaels Harbour Inn, Marina & Spa.

With the arrival of COVID-19 this past spring, the town was forced to close many businesses and began tentatively welcoming back visitors in late spring. With many Americans choosing local travel this year, St. Michaels proved itself a welcoming respite for travelers seeking a destination within driving distance. “All of the town’s businesses — restaurants, shops, hotels — worked really hard to establish precautions in order to welcome visitors back to St. Michaels,” said Kim Hannon, president of the St. Michaels Business Association. “It’s actually been a wonderful year for us, and we think that will continue through the holiday season.” During the holidays, St. Michaels lives up to its reputation as a Norman Rockwellesque town bursting with holiday cheer. On Main Street, trees are lit with white lights, and large snowflake lights are hung on every post. Stores and restaurants are adorned with garland, wreaths and white lights, and an annual tree lighting the first weekend of December kicks off a monthlong celebration. The first weekend in December also features the annual Midnight Madness event, when the town’s stores are open until midnight and restaurants welcome shoppers with festive specials. Santa may be spotted strolling along Main Street, and Christmas music is played throughout the town. Shoppers who make a purchase during Midnight Madness are also entered to win a drawing for one of several gift baskets with merchandise worth up to $10,000. The town is still planning for Midnight Madness this year, opting to spread the event over three nights: December 3-5.

During the second weekend in December, “Christmas in St. Michaels,” a weekend-long celebration begins. While many events may be virtual, due to the pandemic, plenty of in-person activities are still happening, from dinner packages at the Inn at Perry Cabin to a “Light up the Night” drive-by house tour. On Saturday, December 12, the annual Lighted Boat Parade is scheduled to take place in St. Michaels harbor. Innkeeper Will Workman, who owns and operates two inns in town, The George Brooks House and The Parsonage, expects to be busy through the holidays, despite the many changes this year. “We look forward to welcoming guests during the holidays,” Workman said. “Many travelers are looking for an escape that’s not too far from home. St. Michaels is a wonderful place to be during the season — it’s one of those towns that has Christmas written all over it.” For more information about Christmas in St. Michaels visit stmichaelsmd.org. cs

very holiday season, during the second weekend in December, residents and visitors of St. Michaels look forward to the much-anticipated Tour of Homes sponsored by Christmas in St. Michaels. The tour includes seven homes and offers visitors the chance to peek inside some of the town’s most beautiful residences and inns. Due to COVID-19, the Tour of Homes will not take place this year, but Coastal Style was invited inside last year’s tour to photograph some of the town’s most stylish abodes, bedecked in their holiday finest. From a historic Victorian inn to a modern Cape Cod just steps from the water, the charm and style of St. Michaels is never more enchanting than at Christmas.

Tom and Karen Frana pull out all the stops to decorate their waterfront home on Deep Water Point Road for Christmas. The home’s entry greets visitors with a walkway of white, lit pines and a giant pair of nutcracker soldiers flanking the front door. Inside, the foyer welcomes with a huge, lit wreath, red-and-white poinsettias, garland-draped archways and a group of friendly snowmen. No corner is left undecorated in the contemporary home, and each room maintains its own personality, with a dash of Christmas cheer. The centerpiece of the home, the open-air great room, dazzles with an oversized chandelier decorated with berries, greenery and hanging pine cones. Garland-wrapped columns surround the room, and tablescapes complete with candles, glass ornaments and fresh greens adorn each of the two sofa tables. On the mantle, more greens, a set of Santas and sparkling cone trees complement the adjacent full-sized tree, decorated with glass ornaments. A wall of windows showcasing the property’s spectacular views, is hung with five red-ribboned wreaths. A second tree decorated with clear and aqua coastal-themed ornaments, illuminates the dining room, and the chandelier is draped with red berries. The home’s sunroom features yet another full-sized tree, this one decorated with glass ornaments in blues and greens, to complement the abundance of coastal art hung throughout the home.

“We want the holiday décor to have the look and feel of the turn of the century, when the house was built.” Will Workman, owner — George Brooks House

THE GEORGE BROOKS HOUSE On the outskirts of town, on eight acres of land, lies the George Brooks House, a designated Historic Site by the Talbot County Historic Preservation Commission. As the only designated African American historically owned home, the house was originally built by slaves and later expanded to add the 1908 Gothic Revival Victorian house standing today. Now operating as a bed-and-breakfast by Will Workman and his family, the inn welcomes visitors who appreciate the home’s history and extensive gardens. The Workmans also own another inn in town, the Parsonage Inn, in the heart of St. Michaels’ Historic District. The inn’s color palette is based on historic heritage colors by Sherwin Williams, and furnishings rely heavily on antiques combined with modern seating for comfort. Guest rooms feature four-poster beds, and some rooms have fireplaces.

Each year, around Thanksgiving, the inn comes alive, with colorful holiday décor dressing every room. Doorways and windows are hung with garland, and mantels are draped with candles and greens. Fresh arrangements by Debbie Bridges of Swan Cove Flowers in McDaniel brighten the dining room and parlor. Workman strives to keep the décor in line with the home’s unique heritage. “We want the holiday décor to have the look and feel of the turn of the century, when the house was built,” Workman said. The inn’s main Christmas tree was a part of Easton’s Festival of Trees, benefiting the Hospice of Talbot County. It underscored the inn’s nostalgic feel, with a full-sized tree decorated in an It’s a Wonderful Life theme, hung with miniature houses, bells, ribbon and black-and-white photos of the movie.

HISTORICAL FOUNDATION Designated a Historic Site by the Talbot County Historic Preservation Commission, the residence dates back to the Civil War period, as the center section was reportedly built by freed slaves for Captain Andrew C. Barkman. In 1900, George and Mamie Brooks bought the house.

Owners Sarah Robins and David Breimhurst purchased the home in 2015, when they left careers in media and moved to St. Michaels full-time from Philadelphia. “We were sailors and visited for years. Since moving here full-time, we have met so many great people and really fallen into the fabric of the town,” said Robins. The couple have experienced the holiday home tours as visitors and didn’t hesitate when asked about participating with their own home. “I love getting a glimpse inside St. Michaels’ old houses and seeing how they dress up for Christmas, and it’s a wonderful fundraiser for the town,” Robins added. With the help of Lucy Spiegel and Maggie Jarboe of the Talbot County Garden Club,

the couple dove right into the holiday decorating, using fresh flowers, berries and magnolias in every room. Spectacular centerpieces arranged throughout the home are the star attraction and perfectly complement the mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings found throughout. The home’s beautiful collection of hand-knotted rugs sets the stage for a classic red-and-white color scheme. In the foyer, a fresh garland festooned with plaid bows lines the staircase, while an entry bench holds a large basket of fresh magnolias. Just off the foyer, the dining room’s mix of antiques and books makes the perfect backdrop for a wreath decorated with oyster shells and two floral arrangements in red-and-white. The décor extends to the screened-in porch, where a full-sized tree is decorated with white lights and red-glass ornaments that echo the color scheme found throughout the home.

DR. DODSON HOUSE BED-AND-BREAKFAST

THE LAWSON RESIDENCE After 30 years in Bucks County, PA, Susie and Jeff Lawson moved to St. Michaels in 2019 to take advantage of the town’s walkability and maritime spirit. “We are boaters and love the active lifestyle,” Susie said. The Lawsons’ home is decorated in a traditional style, with an abundance of coastal art collected over decades, including a vast collection of hand-carved decoys by artist Frank Temme. The art provides the perfect setting for the couple’s understated, traditional holiday décor, which relies heavily on fresh greenery and classic color schemes. “I love natural elements, like winterberry and magnolia, and try to incorporate that as much as I can in my holiday decorating,” Susie said. The large tree in the sunroom is decorated with an array of handmade family ornaments, as well as collected annual ornaments from the Whalehead Club in Duck, NC. A large alcove features a fullsized tree decorated in gold with 47 years of collected ornaments from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, gifted to Susie from her mother over the years. Outside, more fresh greens in urns, white lights and another lit tree on the patio extend the festive spirit to the front and rear of the home.

The Dr. Dodson House Bed-and-Breakfast on Cherry Street has a rich history dating to 1799 and counts Frederick Douglass as one of its many visitors through the years. The inn goes all out during the holidays, when every room in the inn, as well as the private quarters of owner and innkeeper Janet Schilling is decorated in the season’s finest. The foyer welcomes guests with fresh greens, a small tree, wrapped presents and black-and-white accents. In the parlor, apple-green walls provide the perfect setting for the full-sized tree, trimmed in red, green and gold ornaments, complete with coordinating wrapped presents. The inn’s dining room has a celebratory feel, with a silver tree, a whiteand-silver fresh centerpiece and an antique chandelier hung with festive silver stars. Schilling bought the inn in 1993, after moving from San Francisco, where she practiced civil litigation. St. Michaels felt like the perfect destination for the avid sailor, and she immediately set about restoring the inn while maintaining its historic integrity.

Schilling did much of the work on the house herself, building the kitchen cabinetry, laying the tile work in bathrooms and the brick walkway in the courtyard. “The Dr. Dodson House is truly a labor of love for me,” Schilling said. Indeed, her talents are evident in the inn’s private quarters, too, which are decorated in a refreshingly modern farmhouse style. The gray-and-white color scheme is accented with red throughout the family room, bedroom and kitchen. In the family room, a nauticalthemed tree is decorated with boats and lighthouse ornaments and handmade twine-monkey-fist ornaments, made by Schilling herself.

THE LINTHICUM RESIDENCE Built in 1900, this home on E. Chew Avenue is in the heart of town, within walking distance to all that the town has to offer. It was what first attracted George and Sparky Linthicum when they purchased the home two years ago, after moving from Baltimore County. “We wanted a slower lifestyle and a quaint town. We started coming on weekends and just fell in love with the area,” said George Linthicum. After living in their home a year, the Linthicums were approached by their Realtor, Debra Crouch, about including their home on the annual Tour of Homes. They loved the idea of giving back to the town and found the two-day experience to be a great way to meet friends, neighbors and visitors to the area.

With help from Crouch, as well as a neighbor, Teddy Lowry-Best, the Linthicums decorated with fresh greens, garlands and a huge, live tree in their family room. The home’s neutral décor was accented throughout with bows, candles and a collection of nutcrackers to spirit in the season. WADES POINT INN For 36 years, the Feiler family has hosted holidays at the Wades Point Inn, a spectacular 100-acre property with history dating to 1658. The original home was damaged in the War of 1812 and then rebuilt by Thomas Kemp in a simple Georgian style, modeled after the Brice House in Annapolis. The two-story Victorian summer wing was added in 1890, further expanding the property. Only the fifth family to own the property, the Feilers purchased the Inn in 1984 and continue to operate the 26-room property as a bed-and-breakfast. Betsy Feiler and her daughter, Beth Winter, begin the holiday decorating just after Thanksgiving, when white lights and greenery are hung on the outdoor porches. Indoors, a classic redand-green theme prevails, with the occasional touch of whimsy, like the critter-themed tree in the main dining room. The breakfast area, a glassed-in room with spectacular open vistas of the bay, is decorated in simple silver accents to keep the emphasis on the view. A full-sized tree in the living room features colorful glass ornaments that complement the coral-colored space. The main foyer of the inn boasts a patriotic holiday theme, a nod to the 46-star historic flag that hangs in the hallway. The inn’s holiday décor is designed to keep the focus on the history and tradition of its surroundings, welcoming guests with a sense of nostalgia. “Guests come here to reconnect,” said Winter. “So we try to create a timeless, traditional Christmas feel that reflects of St. Michaels and its surroundings.” cs

Each year’s ornament features a unique design based on the work of a local artist and can be purchased online or in stores throughout St. Michaels. This year’s design, an osprey in flight, is adapted from an original drawing by local artist and graphic designer Scott Sullivan. “The ornaments have become popular collector’s items among both locals and visitors,” said Pat Martin, chair of the 2020 ornament committee. Now in its 17th year, the planning for the limited-edition ornaments takes place almost a year in advance, with a committee choosing a design that highlights one of the area’s sights or traditions. The first original ornament was a rendering of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse at the Chesapeake Bay

Maritime Museum, and it has since sold out. “Nature and boating ornaments are always big sellers, but we try to choose something new each year that ties into the history of St. Michaels,” Martin said. Last year’s ornament of a Santa and Mrs. Claus was chosen because the town’s Santa and Mrs. Claus of 21 years, Tom and Abby Campi, were retiring. Other popular designs from past Christmases include a rendering of the town’s harbor, a great blue heron and a detailed depiction of the landmark Honeymoon Bridge. Many ornaments from years past can still be purchased online, through the organization’s website. Every ornament is 24k gold-plated brass with etched color detail and comes in a gift box with a document explaining its design. Ornaments cost $25 and can be shipped anywhere in the U.S. Proceeds from ornament sales benefit the Bay Hundred community, a group of local nonprofits that provide childcare, senior programs and other offerings to those in need. On December 3, 1946, nearly 10,000 people braved frigid temperatures and blustery winds to watch a Christmas parade in downtown Salisbury. Santa Claus arrived atop a 100-footlong balloon train, to the excitement of children and adults alike. After crossing Division Street, Santa’s train traveled east down Main Street (seen here) en route to the Wicomico County Courthouse lawn, where a line of children were urgently waiting to speak with him. First in line on this day, according to a story published in The Daily Times, was 10-year-old Myrtle Crowe of 107 Phillips Street. “I’ve been here since 8 o’clock. My toes are almost frozen,” she told the newspaper reporter. Undeterred, she soon told Santa she wanted a photographic kit under her tree on Christmas morning. cs
