T

his Valentine’s Day, treat your special someone to handmade chocolates, made locally and with the finest ingredients. “When you love someone, you feed them, and the best way to do that is through chocolate,” says Brandy Widdowson, owner of Sweet Serenity Chocolates in Seaford.

CANDY KITCHEN Ocean City Positioned near the very top of this vacation checklist is a fun-filled visit to Candy Kitchen — the fourth-generation, family-owned-and-operated, wonderful world of candy that has been an integral part of the resort’s landscape for over 80 years. Founded in 1937 by their uncle, Sam Taustin, Bruce Leiner and Jay Taustin now own more than 20 Candy Kitchen retail stores stretching the beaches from Rehoboth to Virginia Beach — all of which are operated by the Leiner family: Bruce; his wife, Cindy; their children, Josh and Jesse; and daughter-in-law Jill. Candy Kitchen produces all of its deliciously famous saltwater taffy, fudge and chocolates at its original 53rd Street candy factory and production complex in Ocean City and has done so since about 1940.

Cheers, Love! TOAST TO ROMANCE THIS VALENTINE‘S DAY WITH A CHERRY CHOCOLATE PASSIONTINI INGREDIENTS: 1 oz cherry liqueur 1½ oz Malibu Coconut rum ½ oz chocolate vodka ½ oz club soda or sparkling water

INSTRUCTIONS: Chill all ingredients beforehand. Pour the cherry liqueur into a martini glass. Add the Malibu Coconut rum, followed by the chocolate vodka, and finally, the sparkling water. Stir, serve and enjoy!

HISTORY

Their recipe for success includes using the freshest, high-quality ingredients, locally sourced whenever possible, such as cream and butter from Lewes Dairy. “The key ingredient is hand labor,” Bruce said. “Even with today’s technology, most of our candies are still handmade, the old-fashioned way, and our employees take tremendous pride in their work. Every single nut cluster is still dipped by hand — so is every bark and every gourmet pretzel. We make the caramel for our famous King Tut in small batches — only 12 slabs at a time. Tomorrow it will be hand-coated on both sides with milk chocolate.” It’s their delicious milk and dark chocolates that reside at the heart of Candy Kitchen’s sweetness and success. “The key to good chocolate is that it should have an excellent flavor and be smooth and creamy, like velvet,” Bruce said.

DOLLE’S CANDIES Ocean City In 1906, the father-son duo of Rudolph Dolle Sr. and Rudolph Dolle traveled to the budding beach town of Ocean City to scope out property for their hand-carved carousel. They loved the resort and promptly purchased a piece of land on the corner of Wicomico Street and the Boardwalk. Four years later, Rudolph Dolle Sr. acquired a small saltwater taffy stand on the same property and Dolle’s Candyland was born. Today, four Dolle’s locations dot the town’s landscape, and while their worldfamous saltwater taffy is what the family is known most for, their handmade chocolates have quite the following, too. Nearly each variety of chocolate is made in its factory on Wicomico Street and the Boardwalk. Using the finest real chocolate and high-quality ingredients, each filling, from jellies to creams, is made in small batches to ensure the most wonderful flavors and textures possible. Dolles.com 410-289-6000

WOCKENFUSS CANDIES West Ocean City Now in its fifth generation of candymaking, family-owned Wockenfuss Candies will celebrate its 105th anniversary in 2020. Herman Charles Wockenfuss came to America in 1885 at age 10 and eventually learned how to make candy. In 1915, he proudly began the Wockenfuss Candy Company. There are currently eight retail stores throughout Maryland, including two locations in Ocean City. Ten members of the Wockenfuss family spanning four generations are involved in the business today, all of which eagerly looking forward to the next 100 years of delicious success. WockenfussCandies.com 410-213-0314

KILWINS Rehoboth Beach When Don and Katy Kilwin began hand-crafting Chocolates in the late 1940s, they used only the best chocolate and other fine ingredients. Kilwins’ chocolates are made the same today, handcrafted in their Petoskey, MI, kitchen using the tried-and-true recipes developed by Don Kilwin himself. Whether it be their signature tuttles, smooth and decadently rich truffles or soft silky creams, it takes just one bite to know why people have loved Kilwins chocolates for generations.

SWEET SERENITY CHOCOLATES Seaford Sweet Serenity Chocolates has been making mouth-watering truffles in flavors like pumpkin cheesecake and apple spice for 15 years in their Seaford store. Owner Brandy Widdowson prides herself on creating customized creations for local and national clients who are looking for any kind of chocolate to celebrate. Truffle flavors rotate with each season, but the weddingcake- and birthday-cake-flavored truffles remain enduring favorites. The shop also sells chocolate creations, like dark chocolate cherry bombs and flavored chocolate bark. Sweet Serenity ships locally and nationally and offers the full range of their sweet creations in their Sussex County store.

SNYDER’S CANDY Rehoboth Beach Locally owned for 80 years, Rehoboth’s Snyder’s Candy has been a summer destination on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach since 1940. While most known for its old-time flavored fountain drinks, Snyder’s boasts tasty treats from chocolates, imported licorices, nostalgic candy selections and an extensive glutenfree menu. Praise for Snyder’s Candy has come from high places: Food Network Magazine tabbed Snyder’s taffy as “Delaware’s Sweetest Treat” and Every Day With Rachel Ray Magazine previously named Snyder’s saltwater taffy as one of “America’s 51 Best MailOrder Foods.” Check out their extensive online shopping experience, too. cs

HARRIET’S HOME Born a slave, Tubman grew up here on Brodess Farm, located today on what is known as Greenbrier Road, in Cambridge.

DEFINING MOMENT Tubman’s life forever changed at the Bucktown General Store in 1835 when she was severely injured by another slave master.

PAYING HOMAGE TO “THE CONDUCTOR” Walk in the historic footsteps of Cambridge’s own Harriet Tubman along her path to freedom NE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND INFLUENTIAL women to walk the earth was born around 1822 in Cambridge. Harriet Tubman continues to inspire generations today for her convictions, courage and sacrifices. Her life is celebrated in Dorchester and Caroline Counties through a powerful and inspiring journey to the places where Tubman lived, worked, worshipped and led others out of slavery. The Tubman Byway is a self-guided driving tour that winds for more than 125 miles through the beautiful landscapes and waterscapes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It includes 36 historically significant sites related to the Underground Railroad.

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

THE SITE OF HARRIET’S FIRST ACT OF DEFIANCE IN 1835, BUCKTOWN WAS A BUSY COMMUNITY with two stores, a shopkeeper’s home, blacksmith shop, and surrounding farms at this crossroads. Shipyards were nearby on the Transquaking River. Hired out to a nearby farmer, Harriet Tubman and the farm’s cook went to a store at this crossroads to purchase some goods for the house. At the same time, a slave belonging to another master left his work without permission. The master chased the slave to the store and ordered Tubman to help him tie up the man, but she resisted. Suddenly, the slave broke free

and ran. The master grabbed a two-pound weight off the counter and hurled it toward the fleeing slave. It, instead, struck young Harriet in the head, nearly killing her. She suffered lifelong headaches, seizures and had vivid dreams as a result of the injury. These same symptoms gave her powerful visions that she ascribed to God and helped guide her on many trips to the North while leading others to freedom. The Bucktown General Store is privately owned today, but it is a historic stop on The Tubman Byway where one can literally walk in Harriet’s footsteps.

Harriet Tubman led a truly fascinating life. Here are just a few of her notable achievements and interesting facts • Harriet made 19 trips along the Underground Railway and guided her parents, siblings, relatives and friends for a total of around 300 slaves. She never lost a passenger to the enemy on those journeys to freedom. • During the Civil War, Tubman worked as a nurse, cook, spy and scout. Her knowledge of local plants helped her cure soldiers with dysentery. Harriet was also the first woman to lead an assault during the war; conducting the Combahee River Raid, which set 700 slaves free. • After the war, Harriet became involved in the cause for women’s suffrage. She gave speeches in Boston, New York and Washington, DC and was a close companion of Betsy Ross. She was also the subject of many books and received $1,200 from the publishing of her first authorized autobiography, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, in 1869.

This year’s screenings include feature-length films, documentaries, funny films, horror shorts, experimental films, social-commentary films, animated films, feel-good films and youth films — shown at resort venues both large and intimate. “Having the town of Ocean City behind us, as well as the many local businesses that support us, has turned our little festival into one that is gaining national recognition,” said Rina Thaler, executive director of the Art League. “We have had festivalgoers from as far away as England attend our festival. As our reputation grows, we hope to make this a winter event that will bring locals and visitors together in a fun and creative way.” The film work of Ocean City native Emmi Shockley will also be celebrated at the 2020 festival by screening two of her short films. Now a New Yorkbased actor and filmmaker, the Worcester Prep grad spent her teenage years acting in small Baltimore film projects, singing in local restaurants and working in her uncle’s Irish pub. At age 15, she starred in Ping Pong Summer alongside Susan Sarandon.

Lewes’ Rob Waters to debut short at festival

Films’ owner Rob Waters is well known across the Shore for his creative commercial work. He’s come a long way from telling tales in his backyard, where he started making movies at age 10. Waters is now taking his own journey through his films. His 2020 OC Film Festival entry is Table by the Window: Deipnophobia, in which two childhood friends meet for lunch to introduce their significant others. The lunch takes a strange and tense turn as they are confronted by a boyfriend’s strange behavior.

W

From Berlin to the Big Screen Emmi Shockley and her brother Tate Shockley began producing their own short films, mostly filmed in Ocean City, years ago. The siblings collaborated on two shorts, written by and starring Emmi, that will be shown at the OC Film Festival.

OC Film Fest Founder B.L. Strang-Moya n 2017, B.L. Strang-Moya, a recent graduate of Towson University, established a relationship with the Art League and began planning the first-ever Ocean City Film Festival, which has seen unprecedented growth. “When we began the festival, my goal was to create an outlet for local filmmakers to share their work,” Strang-Moya said. “Film festivals are few and far between in our region, and in establishing ourselves as Ocean City’s official film festival, we have awoken a vast collective of local talent that did not previously have access to a movie screen or networking opportunities. Following the 2019 festival, we were also ranked in the Top 100 BestReviewed Festivals on FilmFreeway.” A filmmaker himself, Strang-Moya, 24, has long believed the festival and its backdrop would serve as an inspiration for others, allow filmmakers to create invaluable networking connections and bring renewed awareness to Ocean City as a filming destination. cs

Cooper is a big ol’ hound dog 9 years of age. He came to us from an animal control facility in Virginia, where he faced possible euthanasia due to a lack of space. Cooper is very laid-back and likes to be with his people. He has been adopted before, but has been returned for separation-anxiety issues, which lead him to be destructive. Unfortunately, none of his previous adopters crate-trained him, so he has not progressed through those behaviors. Cooper is not destructive at the shelter and has lots of dog and people friends. Cooper loves car rides and squeaky toys and would do best in a household that has the time and patience to crate-train him or where he can come and go freely through a dog door. cs COOPER is adoptable from the Worcester County Humane Society.

Romancing The Shore THREE BESTSELLING NOVELISTS FROM MARYLAND REVEAL THEIR PASSION FOR WRITING AND THEIR LOVE OF THE SHORE Written by Katie Riley

W

hat is it about the Shore that inspires writers? The Delmarva region has produced many well-known writers and has influenced countless others, including its fair share of romance authors. Perhaps it is the proximity to water, the lifestyle of its people or the incredible landscape, but there is something about the coast that is particularly stirring to romance novelists. Whether they are setting their books on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, like Laura Kaye’s Hearts of the Anemoi series, or in the small towns of the Eastern Shore, like Sophie Moss’ Wind Chime series, romance novelists are finding plenty to write about in our part of the world. We sat down with three of the area’s best romance novelists to discuss the enduring appeal of romance novels, what keeps them writing and why they love the Shore.

38

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

SOPHIE MOSS Sophie Moss is a USA Today bestselling author of Irish fantasy romances and heartwarming contemporary romances. A former journalist, Moss has been writing professionally for more than 10 years and has a masters degree in teaching. She is currently working on her fourth book in the Wind Chime series, set on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. She resides in Annapolis. CS: Why did you choose the romance genre when you started writing? SM: I studied nonfiction in college and fell in love with writing. One summer I read a Nora Roberts romance set on the Eastern Shore, and I felt proud that my home had been portrayed in such a beautiful way. I couldn’t stop thinking about how good it made me feel at the end of it. I love reading small-town romances myself — it’s how I unwind, because it makes me feel better about life. I hope that’s what my books do for other people.

Could you tell us about your writing routine? When I’m working on a novel full-time, I wake at 5 a.m. and start writing immediately. I usually spend four to six hours writing and then spend time in the afternoon on social media connecting with other writers and readers. What is the hardest part of being a writer? The amount of time between book releases. Being a writer can be a solitary pursuit; it’s a lot of alone time, and so I try

to take on something else between books, like volunteering with others in my community. I also just finished a masters degree in teaching because I want to get more involved in the teaching aspect of writing and engage that side of things. Where do you get your ideas? I read the news a lot and take ideas from what’s going on in the world. When I wrote the first Wind Chime book, we had just taken out bin Laden. Navy Seals were in the news, and I was reading so much about veterans transitioning into everyday life. I wanted to write about it and show the resilience of the human spirit. Each of the Wind Chime books is interconnected. What’s it like to write a series? The great thing about writing a series is that your readers get to know a whole world. All of the books have a different hero or heroine, but you get to check in on the other characters and revisit them. My books always incorporate a beautiful island setting, a strong woman and a kind-hearted man. People want their happily ever after, and I’m happy to give it to them.

LAURA KAYE New York Times and USA Today bestseller Laura Kaye is the author of over 40 books in romantic suspense and contemporary and erotic romance. She has sold more than one million books in the U.S. alone. Kaye began her career as a history professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and writes bestselling historical fiction under the name Laura Kamoie. Kaye lives on the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis with her husband and two daughters. CSM: You had an unusual start to your writing career. Tell us about it. LK: While vacationing in Rehoboth Beach in 2008, I suffered a traumatic brain injury. In the weeks that followed my recovery, I began having this very strong creative urge and started to write. I had always been a longtime reader of fiction and had read mostly horrors and thrillers growing up, so I began writing a paranormal romance about a vampire. My need to create was consuming, and I wrote 150,000 words in 11 weeks. I published my first book in 2009, and I’ve never stopped writing.

coastal

BOOKSHELF

Many of your books are set locally. How does this area play a role in your writing? My bestselling series, Hard Ink, takes place in Baltimore and has a few scenes in Annapolis, where I live. Raven Riders is set in Frederick, Maryland, and quite a few of my books have scenes in DC, since I used to live there. My paranormal romance series, Hearts of the Anemoi is set on the Chesapeake Bay and throughout the Delmarva region. I have a lot of fun writing about places that I know well and putting them into my books. Why do you think most people read romance novels? They read them to be entertained, which is what any good fiction does. The thing that a romance novel can offer a reader is hope; the genre is inherently hopeful because it affirms the idea that there is someone out there for everyone. Love is a fundamental idea and relevant to most people’s human experience to care about sex, romance and personal happiness.

What do you love most about being a romance author? The readers. No one is more passionate than the readers of romance. Sometimes you find readers who are reading dozens of books at once, hundreds of books per year. The community of readers we have in the romance genre are not shy about investing money, time and affection on books and authors they love. They aren’t afraid to show their support, and it’s a pretty great experience to connect with them.

MARY McCARTHY Mary McCarthy is the bestselling author of The Scarlet Letter Society series. Her first book, The Scarlet Letter Society, was published in June 2014, reaching No. 1 on Amazon’s bestseller list in its genre. Two subsequent novels were published in the series, in 2015 and 2016. McCarthy also authored the children’s book I SEA, A Beachcombing Treasure Hunt with Kirsti Scott. She writes frequently for publications such as The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun and Salon.com, among others. McCarthy resides in Centreville with her husband and four children.

How did you get your start writing romance novels? MM: It kind of started out as a test of myself. Fifty Shades of Grey came out and I was reviewing it for an article I was writing. I found it to be anti-feminist and felt like the terminology was a bit Victorian. I thought women today deserve a braver approach, and I jokingly said, ‘I can write a better novel than this.’ I wrote the first Scarlet Letter Society book in six weeks.

How does the Shore play a role in all of your books? Tilghman Island is a character in all of my books. It’s a gorgeous setting, and I was in love with it the first day I visited. I’ve written all my books while staying on Tilghman, so it was easy to set them there. All of my writing includes inspiration from Delmarva and references things I am passionate about, like coastal erosion and the watermen lifestyle. cs

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE

HEY, SINGLES! Get What You Want In The New Year Matchmaker to the stars Susan Trombetti shares exclusive strategies to make 2020 your best relationship year ever — and how to survive Valentine’s Day solo

W

HEN IT COMES TO THE NEW YEAR, love is on the minds of many. It doesn’t even matter if you are already coupled up; if it’s not a happy union, you want to make it better. The way to find lasting love in the New Year isn’t all that different from any other time; it’s just that another new year marks the passage of time. It highlights what you are missing in your life that is an important part of life — relationships. You can do a few things to change that, though, and at the same time work on making you a better catch.

You’ve Met Your Match Susan Trombetti, matchmaker and CEO of ExclusiveMatchmaking.net, has been seen on HLN, Fox, ABC, NBC, Bravo, Today and Dr. Oz, as well as in Cosmopolitan, The New York Post, and The Washington Post, to name a few.

MEET WITH A DATING COACH OR HIRE A MATCHMAKER to help you find love this year and overcome the issues holding you back. If you are already in an unhappy relationship, it’s time to see a relationship therapist. Everyone should have love in their life. You need to be proactive.

The number-one way to find love this year: KICK THE ONE YOU ARE WITH, OR HUNG UP ON, TO THE CURB! Believe it or not, if you are unhappy, it can be that you are whiling away your time with the wrong person or hooked on someone who isn’t really in your life but is nonetheless occupying your thoughts. I always say everyone is hung up on someone, whether it’s real or imagined. Is this person worthy of all that energy? Only you know! The sooner you say “Bye” to the one who isn’t The One, the sooner you will find the one who is. Many singles fall into this category: They simply don’t want to cut ties with the wrong one or don’t have the courage to end it permanently with that on-again, off-again relationship.

MAKE A PLAN FOR WHAT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE, much like a to-do list. Whether you want to lose weight or get that degree, jot it down and note what steps you will take to get there. Make it a priority, and don’t let anything hold you back — and don’t feel guilty for taking some metime. You deserve to have whatever it is you want in the new year, and it makes you a better catch!

2/14: Just Another Day Here are a few steps for surviving as a single this Valentine’s Day

W

HEN IT COMES TO VALENTINE’S DAY, I, as a matchmaker, am going to say that it’s a bit commercialized, leading you to believe everyone in the world is coupled up. Well, they aren’t, and common sense tells you this, but you still feel bad especially if you are all alone or just out of a relationship. Getting past this day can still be a bit of a struggle, so thinking about it a bit differently and having a strategy will do wonders for your spirit.

1 2

Your Local Award-Winning Experts in Heating & Cooling

REALIZE VALENTINE’S DAY IS JUST A DAY, and so what if you don’t have someone this year? It’s one day out of the year, and you can use this time to focus on new dating strategies so that you are coupled up with someone new and exciting by next year.

TAKE THIS ROMANCEFILLED DAY AND USE IT AS AN EXCUSE TO FLIRT with everyone you run across (except for your coworkers, since that can stray into sexual harassment, not flirting). Flirt with the new neighbor, the waiter/waitress and with anyone you have a crush on. It’s a lighthearted day, and you should treat it as such. Don’t know how to flirt? Use props and pass out Hershey kisses or those little hearts with sayings on them. They are great conversation starters and will help you get your flirt on!

3 4 5

CHECK YOUR LOCAL CALENDAR for Valentine’s Day events for singles. At times, dating coaches and matchmakers throw such events, and there are other organizations that host Valentine’s events, as well — so no need to be alone.

TREAT YOURSELF TO A MASSAGE or have some muchneeded time alone and indulge yourself in whatever you want to do. Celebrate you and realize you are a catch!

LASTLY, CHECK OUT DATING APPS AND LEARN which are the best. Give it a shot. You don’t need to even be alone on Valentine’s Day. A date is at your fingertips, and if you start using them in plenty of time, you might have a date by then. cs

Instant Connection Written by Alison Clary

Photos by Grant L. Gursky

HARRIET AND ALVIN SMITH’S LOVE STORY began when Alvin courageously walked up and asked Harriet to dance with him at a party in Washington, DC. After feeling an instant connection while sharing their first (of later many) dances, they continued to talk openly and spend time interacting at the party. When the night concluded, Alvin asked if he could see her again the next day. Much to his excitement, she agreed. The following day, they spent hours talking on a blanket at the park and getting to know each other’s interests and personalities. They began dating and later married on the five-year anniversary of their first meeting. Today, Harriet and Alvin are proud to say they’ve been married for 43 years, and their love is as strong as ever. They currently reside in Millsboro because it was Harriet’s dream to retire by the ocean. In their community, they are known for the unsurpassed kindness they show one another and every person they meet.

What’s been the key ingredients or secrets to your relationship's success? Alvin: Communication. Harriet: Respect. What’s been the best part of being married to your partner? Alvin: She is my absolute best friend, and I can honestly say I would give my life for her. Harriet: I feel so much love from Alvin, and every little thing he does shows me how much he loves me. And I sure love him, too, with all of my heart. What do you find most attractive about your partner’s personality? Alvin: Her smile and her calmness when we talk about serious topics. Harriet: His kindness. Has it always been easy? What struggles have you encountered together and how did you overcome them? Alvin: No, it hasn’t always been easy. One memory that comes to mind is when we were living in Maryland, and Harriet underwent a very serious surgery. Unfortunately, while she was in post-surgery rehabilitation, I was called out to Silicon Valley for a two-week work trip. I felt so bad that I wasn’t able to be there for her, so I made the decision to fly her out to Silicon Valley the next day so that I could give her the care and attention she needed. Harriet: Life isn’t always easy, but we’ve always found a way to work things out. Alvin always lives to make me smile… he’s always full of surprises.

What are some of these surprises? Alvin: Well, for example, a few months ago I surprised Harriet with a public celebration of her life. Twenty-five years ago, Harriet told me she’s always wanted to ride in a Jaguar, and I never forgot it, so I reached out to a friend, and he kindly let me borrow his beloved convertible Jaguar with bright-red bucket seats. I took Harriet for a ride, and when we arrived at our country club, I arranged for 50 neighbors to be lined up and waiting to applaud Harriet as we entered. Then I pulled inspiration from my musical-and-dance background to perform for her. I tapdanced and sang “My Girl” by The Temptations, as well as Al Green’s “I’m So in Love With You”. Harriet: I can’t put into words how much it all meant to me. I love that he still surprises me after all these years. When your partner upsets or angers you, how do you deal with them? Alvin & Harriet: We have never been angry with each other or had an argument. If we’re ever not on the same page, we just simply talk it out. What advice would you give married couples to remain dedicated to their relationship? Alvin: Get to know the person you’re going to wed and believe in them fully. Work hard to agree on the situations that matter. Harriet: Always listen to each other. Always be happy. Actually, that’s always been our motto: “Always be happy.”

David & Michael LEWES

Love Conquers All Written by Tony Chalek

Photos by Meghan Shupe

SOMETIMES LOVE BLOSSOMS FROM ONGOING EXPOSURE AND PROXIMITY to that special someone. But other times, it is a chance meeting, a one-in-a-million shot, which, if shifted in time by just an hour — or perhaps even a minute — would have never come to pass. That’s how it was for David and Michael. David was in from Philadelphia, visiting in Rehoboth Beach at what was back in September 2006 still known as 59 Lake (but has since become Stingrays). As luck would have it, Michael, whom the U.S. Navy had stationed in Virginia at the time, was hanging out at 59 Lake, too. Michael saw David from across the proverbial room, and thanks to the goading of his friends, he worked up the nerve to ask David to dance, even though David had been dancing with someone else. And their lives would never be the same again. Following years of long-distance courtship, including five-hour drives from Virginia to Philadelphia and periods during which Michael was out to sea, the two realized they had something special, something worth fighting for. Despite all the trials and tribulations along the way, Michael proposed in June of 2019, and he and David will be married on Sept. 26, 2020, at the Rehoboth Beach Yacht & Country Club, before more than 200 of their loved ones.

What have been the key ingredients to your relationship’s success? David: Respect, not only for who we each are separately, but for each other's dreams and contributions. We truly admire each other's strengths and strive to understand each other’s challenges. Michael: Communication, especially since one of us is introverted and the other is extroverted. In many ways, this is our critical strength and challenge. We actually have never had a fight: We may brood; we may get silent; we may get upset; but we do not fight. What’s been the best part of being with your partner? David: The best part is how we've grown as a couple and how each of us has grown as an individual. While we have a lot in common, we also have a number of differences. We come from different religious and cultural backgrounds and of course that has shaped us. And while our upbringing was different, we both come from a sense of family and a belief in God.

Michael: Love. That belief helps us learn from each other and from those around us. We feel very fortunate to have a wide and diverse circle of people in our lives. We inspire each other to be more than we were yesterday and believe in who we can be tomorrow. What do you find most attractive about your partner’s personality? David: Michael is just so amazing. Without thinking twice, he would try to cross through fire to help someone. He has such a zeal for people and a belief that everyone deserves respect and kindness. You can see it in his interactions with people, his contagious laugh and smile, and his love for our dog. He continually inspires me to be courageous and to open myself to others. Michael: David is like the best person on earth. He has a heart of gold and continually strives to see the best in everyone and see their perspective. You can really see his heart when he interacts with children, as well as our dog. He is truly a giving person and inspires me to be more patient and understanding.

What advice would you give to couples to remain dedicated to their relationships? David: Find somewhere that means a lot to you as a couple and make that your happy place. One of our favorite places is to see water and the Indian River Inlet Bridge. There are times we drive just to look at the bridge, especially at night. It makes us smile and dream, so we visit it at least once a month. Michael: It really is a simple choice. Make a choice to focus on the positive in the other person and believe in the relationship. Remember that while each of you may need alone time, the relationship needs continual attention. Go do something new and different as a couple. And if that is not your thing, relish the things you enjoy.

Dennis & Andee SALISBURY

Destined by Fate Written by Jonathan Westman

Photos by Grant L. Gursky

FATE: IT SOMETIMES HAS A WAY OF CONNECTING TWO PEOPLE who were destined to be together no matter the circumstances. Enter Andee and Dennis Maloney. They met by chance on the dance floor in 2000; country line dancing at the Cancun Cantina in Hanover, Md. It was Andee’s 29th birthday — and she believed she’d just met the man of her dreams. She was right, and they married three years later. “Dennis is the love of my life! You know, that once in a lifetime kind of love,” Andee wrote to Coastal Style. “But ours is not your typical love story, however.” Dennis and Andee were united as one but trying to replicate that bond with their children from previous relationships was difficult. Years would pass — and the love they shared never permeated their blended family. It took a tremendous toll on their marriage, and sadly, the couple separated in 2010 and divorced in 2012. “Love was never the issue; we always loved each other,” Andee wrote. “A little bit of stubborn pride and being too protective of our kids was our downfall.” Nearly seven years later, in December 2018, as fate would have it, Andee and Dennis ran into each other once again — country line dancing at the Cancun Cantina. Dennis was living and working in Chestertown, and Andee’s home and job were in Salisbury. Yet, seeing each other in that moment of chance instantly reconnected two souls that had only been separated previously by circumstance. “We never stopped loving each other, and we knew immediately that we wanted to be together again,” Andee said. “And all of our kids are grown now, so that dynamic isn’t an issue anymore.” Dennis proposed to Andee on the Ocean City beach last June and the couple remarried on November 16, 2019, at the Atlantic Hotel in Berlin. “Our wedding was the best day, just perfect,” Andee said. “We are so incredibly happy and looking forward to the rest of our lives together!”

What have been the key ingredients or secrets to your relationship’s success? Andee: I think the key ingredient this time around has been communication — that was our downfall the first time around. It’s vital for any relationship to have open and honest communication. Being able to talk about anything with your spouse, even the difficult things. And on the other side of that, listening with an open heart and open mind. I always reflect on one of my favorite quotes by Stephen Covey, who says, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”

Dennis: Just having someone to share life with. We both have different likes and dislikes, but we accept the differences in each other and give each other time to do what they want or need to do. We come from very different backgrounds, but somehow it just works with us (she will always be a city girl to me and, I’m just an “old farmer”). It’s give-and-take, really. She has a taste for the finer things in life, whereas I am rough around the edges — but I’m thankful for the way she gently opens my eyes to “her world.” And in return, she appreciates my rustic ways and my “farmer logic sense of humor.”

Dennis: Make it a point to express your feelings! Be sure to always kiss each other goodbye in the morning (even if she’s not quite awake, she knows!) and kiss and hold each other at the end of the day. When you say, ‘I love you,’ look into the other one’s eyes so they know you are there in that moment with them. Beyond that, just be supportive and listen to one another’s suggestions and point of view. You don’t ever want you leave your spouse wondering or questioning how you really feel about them.

What advice would you give married couples to remain dedicated to their relationship? Andee: The big one: Communicate with each other, even about the hard things! Never go to bed angry or at odds. Remember you’re in this together and listen with an open heart and mind. Regular date nights are a must, too!

What’s been the best part of being married to your partner? Andee: Honestly, getting to wake up with him every day again and coming home to each other at the end of every day. It’s the little things that matter — just spending time together, where ever our day-to-day life takes us, really. Dennis is the love of my life, my true soulmate and best friend! I would be lost without him. I don’t know what forces in the universe brought us together again, but I sure am thankful they did!

Dennis: Understand that men and women are motivated by different things — what’s important to her may not seem that important to you and vice versa. Never let a day go by that you don’t tell the other how much they mean to you. cs

Wee Little Singers NURTURING DEVELOPMENT THROUGH MUSICAL EXPERIENCES WEE LITTLE SINGERS IS AN EARLY-CHILDHOOD EDUCATIONAL MUSIC PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS PARENT AND CHILD TO INTERACT through the use of folk music, rhythm instruments, books to music, dance and many other educational activities. While bonding, children develop musical tools to nurture their independence, language, social, motor, cognitive and musical skills. Tiffany Miller founded Wee Little Singers in 2007 out of need when she couldn’t locate a creative music program to hold her 2-year-old son’s attention. A graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in music therapy, Miller combined her knowledge of music, child development and play to create Wee Little Singers. Thirteen years later, it continues to positively enrich so many children across the Shore through its magical musical experiences. A child’s most formative years musically are from birth to age 3. Wee Little Singers helps to develop these musical skills, as well as stimulate the brain’s interconnections between the right and left hemispheres. This is accomplished through the simplicity of singing, playing instruments, dancing and storytelling. For Tiffany, Wee Little Singers was what she was put on this earth to do. “I absolutely adore children, and it is such a rewarding experience to watch students gain educational growth through the use of music,” Miller said. 443-614-7862 | WeeLittleSingers.com | 337 Civic Avenue, Salisbury

SUCCESS STORY

“When something like this happens to you, it really makes you think about life. I’m just incredibly thankful.” — SUSAN ELERDING

HEART AND SOUL Susan Elerding, who recently received a pacemaker to stabilize her irregular heartbeat, with daughter, Ally, and husband, John. Photo by Todd Dudek

THE BEAT GOES ON AFTER BEING RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE SHE’S WORKED FOR 20 YEARS, A PACEMAKER WAS THE ANSWER FOR PRMC NURSE SUSAN ELERDING USAN ELERDING was in a meeting when her heart stopped. As a nurse, she had dedicated her life to helping others, but on this July day she found herself being rushed into the Emergency Department as she struggled to piece together what had happened. “I remember feeling confused,” said Elerding, who has worked for Peninsula Regional Medical Center for more than two decades. “I didn’t want to tell everyone that I didn’t know what year it was.”

Elerding spent days in the hospital undergoing tests to determine why her body had failed her. Still in a confused state days after the incident, she found it hard to put words together to explain her thoughts and feelings. “I was told I had slight seizure activity. When a doctor witnesses that, it’s hard for you to say it didn’t happen,” she said. “I needed to find out if it was a seizure because of epilepsy or because my heart didn’t beat properly.” After a few days, Elerding was discharged. At her follow-up appointment, a decision was made: She would be weaned off her seizure

medications and have continuous heart monitoring in an attempt to pinpoint the problem. For 90 days, Elerding relied on her husband and friends for transportation, as her medical condition prevented her from driving. On Sept. 6, a device was implanted that would allow doctors to monitor Elerding’s heart in real time. If she felt off, she could push a button that would record her cardiac activity. She didn’t have to wait long for an answer. On Oct. 2, while her husband was taking her to work, the feeling returned. Elerding pushed the button and headed straight to Peninsula Cardiology Associates, where she discovered that her heart had stopped beating for 14 seconds. Before too long, cardiologists were able to give Elerding a pacemaker to prevent future episodes. “I knew it was something bad,” she said. “I was able to get an answer, and I feel very fortunate for that; not everyone is so lucky.” Elerding has made the most of that luck. Since receiving her pacemaker, she and her family have moved into a new home, and her daughter is attending George Washington University, with hopes to one day become a doctor. Elerding herself is now pursuing her master’s degree. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, so I’m really glad I have the opportunity to accomplish that,” she said. “When something like this happens to you, it really makes you think about life. I’m just incredibly thankful.”

FROM THE HEART

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU! Jumpstart your health with smart diet and exercise By Jeanne Ruff, Executive Director of the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute

remember the first mile I ever ran. I said to myself, I don’t ever want to feel this bad ever again. And so it began, my 30-year dedication to exercise. Exercise is a part of my life — my family, my culture, my passion, my career. After that first mile, I challenged myself with every run; each time, I went a little farther, a little faster. I liked the camaraderie of running with others and, of course, the shoes and the attire. Going to a running event with friends was an adventure, a weekend getaway where we shared our successes, challenges and always-unique experiences. It was the physical change — the calming sense, overall well-being, energy, transformation and sense of accomplishment that instilled in me the importance of physical activity. I loved the

physiology and science behind exercise, which is now validated by research as a treatment for several conditions that coexist with other conditions, otherwise known as comorbidities. This passion for running became the foundation of my career; I believed I had to set the example for my patients — patients with cardiac, pulmonary or vascular disease — as they recuperated from a heart attack or surgery and were learning to live with the disease. This role further motivated me. I may not be the best at any one sport, but I respect them all — running, racquetball, cycling, group aerobics, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and waterskiing. I eventually found barre classes and, of course, Pilates.

rests, Dr. Steven Hearne, a cardiologist and Medical Director of Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute, says a doctor’s appointment should still be scheduled. Those who conducted the study found enrollment difficult because of the exclusion criteria; participants could not have a weak heart muscle, previous strokes or angioplasties, or chest pain at rest, and they had to have fairly stable exertional symptoms with evidence of blockage on a stress test. According to Hearne, 25 percent of people enrolled in the study had either bypass or stents while they were in the trial. “If a patient comes to the hospital with active chest pain, then we know revascularization is better than medicine, and we’ve known that for a long time,” Hearne said. “When you see these studies on TV, you can’t jump to conclusions. You need to talk to your doctor and find out exactly what you’re managing.” While Hearne agrees with the study, he said it’s difficult to draw a definitive conclusion since most the

patients involved were relatively healthy; many high-risk participants had coronary imaging to look at their arteries prior to the study. “These people have blockages, but they’re living their lives,” he said. “The study focuses on low-risk people. If their heart muscle is normal, certainly if all the criteria were met, sure you can manage it medically. There is no way to push either way.” For a healthy heart, Hearne urges patients to monitor their blood pressure, stop smoking, lose weight and exercise 30-45 minutes each day. Chest pain — medication or intervention?

NEW STUDY SAYS EXERCISEINDUCED CHEST pain may be better managed with medication rather than stents or cardiac bypass surgery, but local cardiologists caution that the results may not apply to many people. The 9-year study, which recently concluded, focused on patients with ischemic heart disease, which is diagnosed when plaque builds up in the coronary arteries, limiting blood supply to the heart. Patients who have ischemic heart disease can experience chest pain or tightness, called angina. When those patients exercise or experience stress, their body attempts to pump more blood but is unable to do so due to the narrowing of the arteries by plaque. EXPERT ADVICE

Broken heart syndrome is real, cardiologists say THIS TIME OF YEAR CAN BE DIFFICULT for those who may be grieving the loss of a loved one, but can you die of a broken heart? According to cardiologists, it is possible. The condition is called Takotusubo, or stressinduced cardiomyopathy, and it occurs when stress causes dysfunction or failure of the heart muscle. It’s rare — about 1 percent of patients seen for heart attacks are actually suffering from Takotusubo, according to Dr. Jeffrey Wieland, an interventional cardiologist, Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, and Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation — but it can cause unstable heart rhythms, which can be lethal. “Typically, people present with symptoms that mimic a heart attack, and that’s appropriate because there is usually some kind of injury to the heart muscle,” Wieland said. “If you measure the enzymes, they will be positive and the presentation on the EKG will look like a heart attack. The patient will likely experience chest pain, shortness of breath and sometimes indigestion.” When the patient is taken to the cardiac

February is American Heart Month: A time to remember to care for your cardiovascular system RIGHT NOW, 1 IN EVERY 4 DEATHS in the United States is caused by heart disease, far surpassing all other causes. That statistic could be reduced, because heart disease is often preventable — and even when it isn’t, early detection and careful management can lessen its effects. More than 40% of Americans have a risk factor for heart disease. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are all significant risk factors. To help people in our community detect heart problems before they become more serious, Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute offers a free heart-disease risk assessment that includes a fasting lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL, risk ratio and glucose), ankle/brachial index, resting 12-lead EKG, body fat/body mass index, blood pressure and pulse oximetry testing and more. Participants must not currently be under the care of a cardiologist or have a known history of heart disease. Because of the blood testing, an eight-hour fast is required beforehand. Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call 410-543-7026 to schedule a free Heart Smart appointment.

64

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

There are also free vascular screenings available for both men and women. Among Americans older than 65, 12% to 20% have peripheral arterial disease, but only one-third show symptoms. Many people mistake the symptoms of PAD for something else. People over 55 who are at higher risk for vascular disease should be screened to detect these vascular problems before they develop into something much more serious. Those with risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, heart disease or family history of vascular disease, and people who have a symptom, such as leg pain or numbness in the leg or foot, may be eligible for a free screening at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. If you are 55 or older, please call the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at 410-543-7123 to find out if you qualify for the free vascular screenings and to reserve a date and time. “These are all efforts to ensure the health of our communities and to achieve health and wellness across our continuum of care,” says Jeanne E. Ruff, Executive Director of the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute.

catheterization lab, however, images of the heart show no blockages. Instead, the contraction of the heart is abnormal, and the shape of the left ventricle is elongated, suggesting injury. According to Wieland, Takotusubo is seen frequently in women ages 55-70, often with very few risk factors for coronary artery disease. It could be prompted by any unexpected event that causes an adrenaline surge. Usually, the heart will heal itself within a few days, but Wieland encourages anyone with chest pain to seek help immediately. “Even if you have no risk factors, chest pain should be taken seriously,” he said. “If you have chest pain, you need to be evaluated.” Patients diagnosed with Takotusubo are typically prescribed medications that improve pumping function of the left ventricle and prevent spasms of the coronary arteries. Wieland said Takotusubo rarely causes permanent damage, and there is low risk for recurrence. Smoking, family history, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol are all risk factors for heart disease. To learn more, visit peninsula.org/heart.

Enhanced Cardiac Care on Delmarva Delmarva Heart and Peninsula Cardiology Associates Join Peninsula Regional Health System (PRHS)

eart health is one of the most important issues to people on Delmarva, and to help ensure the best, most accessible care possible, cardiology practices Delmarva Heart and Peninsula Cardiology Associates (PCA) have both become part of Peninsula Regional Medical Group (PRMG). Both Delmarva Heart and PCA have provided exceptional cardiology care to the Lower Shore for decades. By joining PRHS, these practices are ensuring that they can continue their missions to provide the most modern heart care to the Delmarva Peninsula. “To maintain the high quality of heart care on the Eastern Shore with the latest technologies and procedures, it was imperative for both Delmarva Heart and Peninsula Cardiology to have access to the resources that PRHS can provide. In addition, our resources and technology will help ensure that the brightest and best cardiologists will keep coming to work and live on Delmarva,” said Karin DiBari, MD, MMM, FACOG, Vice President of Peninsula Regional Medical Group and Chief Physician Executive for Peninsula Regional Medical Center and the Peninsula Regional Health System. “We have worked together for many years to take care of our community’s cardiology needs, and we look forward to continuing in that journey.” Patients can continue to see their current providers in the same locations.

Delmarva Heart has five cardiologists and five advanced practice professionals with locations in Salisbury and Berlin. Their robust research program will continue to allow patients access to cardiology-related clinical trials, with the research team joining Peninsula Regional’s Richard A. Henson Research Institute. “We are excited to partner with PRMC to further our mutual goals of providing the highest level of cardiac care and serve the needs of the community,” said Steven Hearne, MD, FACC, of Delmarva Heart. Peninsula Cardiology’s seven cardiologists also are continuing to practice in their Salisbury and Berlin locations. Their family medicine practices will also become part of PRMG. “The entire Peninsula Cardiology team is enthusiastic about joining PRMG, as we believe this will enhance the well-being and experiences of our patients, improve clinical integration regionally, and ensure the continued provision of superior cardiac care on the Delmarva Peninsula for many years to come,” said Rene Desmarais, MD, of Peninsula Cardiology. Both Delmarva Health and PCA will continue to maintain all current services for patients now and once the onboarding is complete, including cardiology, diagnostic testing and coumadin clinics.

“NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!” Continued from Page 63

As my career evolved into more sitting, listening and computer work, and away from direct patient care, I decided I didn’t want to be the person with “the sitting disease.” I discovered years of running had taken its toll on my hip flexors, gait and feet, and I began to feel stiffness, hamstring issues, even a little belly. I learned that building core strength counterbalances the effects of being sedentary and evokes overall strength and flexibility. One session on a Pilates reformer will change you forever and humble you. This testimony is not only from me but from a few of the physicians I work with who have also endured the reformer. I believe Pilates/ core training and a regular aerobic exercise program — three to five days per week — is the key to maintaining your health and an active lifestyle. As we get older, we need to eat less as our metabolism slows down, our body composition changes and we lose muscle mass, which is needed to burn calories. Here are some ways to jumpstart your metabolism: • Interval training: slow run, skip, fast walk, fast run, slow run, repeat • Eat vegetables and fresh fruits, complex grains and lean sources of protein • Drink alcohol in moderation/no binge drinking • Avoid sugar You feel better when you move, eat right and maintain a healthy weight. This “feeling better” is all about positive energy and a positive attitude. I was blessed with great parents who instilled in me my sense of self-responsibility, accountability and independence to take care of myself, as they did. This foundation led to a successful career, solid family unit with sisters and brothers and, of course, my health. It’s a new year and I challenge you to “go a little farther.” You may be amazed by what you can accomplish.

ROBERT GRIFFITH, 58, SERVED HIS COUNTRY FOR 26 YEARS in the U.S. Army, yet with all he’d seen and done during that time, it was a shoulder replacement and six subsequent surgeries that rendered him nonfunctional, often having to resort to bed rest, medication and painful therapy just to get through the day. Then, four years ago, he discovered Posture Alignment Therapy — and he’s never looked back. Posture Alignment Therapy is a proven program designed to treat and mitigate pain and dysfunction without medication, manipulation or surgery, by realigning the body for optimal functionality and wellness. It treats the cause of pain and dysfunction, not the symptoms, through a multilayer process that pinpoints where the imbalance exists and provides a series of progressive exercises that, according to Griffith, “allows the body to naturally heal itself, improving function, freedom

of movement and stability.” Griffith was so amazed by the benefits of Posture Alignment Therapy that he went on to become not only an Egoscue-certified Posture Alignment Therapist but also a certified Exercise Therapy Specialist who is pursuing his Advanced certification. Currently teaching a Restorative Stretch class featuring Egoscue-inspired exercises at Coastal Fitness in Ocean City, Griffith said clients experience the physical, mental and emotional benefits of Posture Alignment Therapy and Restorative Stretch with dedication and time. “Postural imbalances can be caused by normal daily life, from sitting behind a desk at work for long periods of time to physical activities, such as sports, as well as physical traumas stemming from injuries or surgeries,” Griffith said. “They also are rarely found at the location of the pain.”

Evaluate your body symmetry. A specialist can examine a client’s load joints, including the shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. “You identify where the deviations are in the body symmetry.” Associate certain chains of muscles, which allows specialists to begin pinpointing where the cause of pain lies. Perform functional tests. Clients perform simple movements that help specialists confirm their initial thoughts on the cause of pain. “Evaluate the body in motion because it tends to tell a little more of the story of where the weaknesses are.” Implement an exercise program. A specialist will design a regimen of gentle daily exercises that clients may use to help strengthen and lengthen muscles. Follow-up sessions. Specialists and clients determine if adjustments need to be made to exercise programs. “This process takes time and commitment.”

How to Achieve the Healthiest Smile A Q&A with Dr. James Crouse of The Brace Place

Q A

How do I know if my child needs braces? What signs should I look for?

The simplest way to see if your child needs braces is to take them to the orthodontist for an examination. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be seen for an initial evaluation at the age of 7. This is when the first permanent molars and the upper and lower incisors are in. However, some things that you may notice on your own would include protrusive upper teeth, lack of space for teeth to erupt and crossbites, where the top teeth are trapped behind the lower teeth. Another condition that the orthodontist can help with is narrow arches that may affect your child’s ability to breathe properly. If your child has problems breathing through their nose, the orthodontist may be able to help.

How long will my child have braces? The short answer is, “It depends.” Early treatment to correct a problem such as a crossbite can be accomplished in as little as a month. Typically, we try to complete early treatment in a year or less. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment is usually finished in two years or less.

68

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

Do braces correct more than crooked teeth? Absolutely. Properly aligned teeth work best and are less prone to future problems, such as TMJ problems, excessive tooth wear, gum problems and tooth decay. In addition, as I mentioned previously, correcting narrow collapsed arches can help a person’s ability to breathe properly. Just straightening the front teeth and not addressing the bite is like painting a house that is on fire (or at least has termites).

Are there other benefits for my child to wear braces? You can’t ignore the benefits to a child’s self-esteem. It’s an unfortunate truth that people judge others according to how they look, and people with unattractive teeth are judged to be less intelligent and less honest than those with a nice smile. In addition, bullying is a serious problem, and a child who is being teased about their funny-looking teeth is a tragedy.

KEEPIN’ IT LOCAL Dr. James M. Crouse is a Salisbury native who’s been caring for patients of The Brace Place since 1994. For more information about Dr. Crouse and his practice, visit DrCrousesBracePlace.com.

Are there treatments available to potentially avoid the need for braces in the future?

How young is too young for a child to wear braces?

The goal of early treatment is to correct a problem that will cause damage, such as tooth wear, gum problems or to make future treatment significantly easier. Occasionally, we do early treatment, and when the remaining permanent teeth come in, they don’t require any further treatment. I tell parents they won the orthodontic lottery. I always tell parents they should plan on the child needing full treatment in the future.

The main factor is where they are in their development and if they have a problem that will cause damage if left untreated. I have treated children as young as 4. These children aren’t treated with traditional braces; it’s usually some form of an appliance.

It’s now 2020. Braces today seem a bit archaic. Has orthodontic technology advanced since we were children?

How much do braces cost? Again, this depends on the severity of the problem, but full orthodontic treatment in this area typically ranges between $6,000 and $8,000. We have many payment options designed to fit almost anyone’s budget. We like to say we don’t want to turn an orthodontic problem into a financial problem.

As an adult, how do I know if I need braces? Do you like what you see in the mirror when you smile? When you bite down, is your bite comfortable, or are you not sure how you should bite? Has your dentist noticed significant wear of your teeth or gum problems that may be aggravated by your bite?

What takes place during The Brace Place Smile Assessment? We take photographs of the face and the teeth, and if you don’t have a current panoramic X-ray at your dentist, we take an X-ray. After a discussion of your concerns, I do an examination in which I look at proportions of the face and the alignment of the teeth and the bite. We then discuss the treatment options and decide whether doing traditional braces or Invisalign would be best. The determining factor is your desire. Invisalign is a removable appliance, and if you lose things easily, you may need braces that can’t be removed. I have 9-year-olds who are excellent Invisalign patients and 20-somethings that are non-compliant, so it just depends on the person. With either option, our goal is to get you the results you want as quickly and comfortably as possible. cs

Orthodontic treatment has changed greatly in the 30-plus years I’ve been practicing. Back then, the only option for orthodontic treatment was braces. Now, patients have the additional options of lingual braces and Invisalign. Also, 3D digital scanning is replacing the goopy impressions that were needed for appliances, and 3D X-rays (cone-beam scans) make diagnosis and treatment more precise. Today, orthodontic treatment is faster and more comfortable than ever.

10 Top Foods That May Help Boost Your Immune System: Red bell peppers: Loaded with vitamin C, bell peppers are perfect for snacking with your favorite dip or cooked in a quick stir-fry or fajitas. They are also rich in lycopene and anthocyanin, which help fight infections and prevent heart disease. Spinach is an excellent source of flavonoids and antioxidants. Research suggests these flavonoids may even help prevent the common cold! Eaten raw as a salad, scrambled into eggs, steamed as a side dish or tossed into a chicken soup — the possibilities are endless for adding more of this nutrientdense vegetable to your day. Cold-Water Fish: Oily fish, such as salmon, are full of omegas that help the body fight inflammation. These fish can also be a good source of vitamins B6 and D, which promote production of the antibodies needed to fight infection. Aim for at least two servings each week.

Super-Charged ! WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT YOUR BEST THIS WINTER, TRY THESE IMMUNITY-BOOSTING FOODS Written by Kelly Williams, MS

W

hen cold, damp weather drives many of us indoors during the winter, many of us notice an uptick in colds and other viruses. The extra time spent indoors may make it easier for germs to spread, but you can fight back! With plenty of rest, fresh air, sunshine and good nutrition, you can help prime your immune system for peak performance.

Nuts and Seeds: There are so many varieties to choose from, so be sure to sample them all! Studies show that adequate vitamin E is especially important for promoting immunity in the aged. Just 1 oz of sunflower seeds or almonds meets almost half of the daily value. Garlic is a small but mighty immune booster. Its active component is allicin, thought to block enzymes involved in infections. If you can handle it raw, you will maximize the benefits, but lightly cooking it may make it more palatable.

Citrus fruits are another vitamin C powerhouse. Try starting your day with a squeeze of lemon, lime or orange in your water for an easy way to add a little more of this powerful antioxidant to your diet. As a bonus, this may improve your hydration, which is essential to helping your body fight off illness and flush toxins out of your system.

Broccoli: Packed with vitamins A, C and E, broccoli and its cruciferous cousins, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, are full of antioxidants and play an important role in the body’s detoxification pathways. Sweet potatoes are full of vitamins A, C and B6, not to mention a good source of soluble and insoluble fiber. Try a baked sweet potato for breakfast with a drizzle of maple syrup or sprinkle of cinnamon and a scoop of yogurt for a tasty variation on a traditional baked potato.

Fermented Foods: Studies show there is a positive relationship between the bacteria in fermented foods and the immune system. Consider a nourishing cup of miso soup, a scoop of kimchi or a glass of kombucha or kefir to help feed the “good bugs” in your gut.

Ginger has long been known to calm a queasy stomach, but did you know it is naturally anti-inflammatory and that the active component even helps treat asthma? Try sipping a cup of ginger tea or grate fresh ginger into curries, over carrot or squash dishes. cs

Embrace Your Self A MINDFULNESS EXAMINATION: DISCOVER A SELF-LOVE AND AN INNER PEACE THAT YOU NEVER HAD BEFORE Column by Kelli Anders, MS, C-IAYT, RYT 500

The third in a series, this article aims to provide you with an understanding of self-love and its foundation of principles. As we celebrate the concept of lasting love, there is one love that, by its very nature, pervades all others: self-love. To be clear, self-love is not about self-absorption at the expense of others; it is not based in arrogance. To the contrary, self-love is a prerequisite of healthy relating. It is the foundation upon which love for others is constructed. There is a popular saying that goes, “You can’t fill from an empty cup,” which implies that you can’t give what you don’t have — you must give from the overflow. Loving yourself is being in awe of the miracle of your existence and grows, dynamically, through small actions you take to fill your proverbial cup.

72

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” — Siddhartha Gautama Buddha

Filling Your Cup Self-love is an extension of self-trust and self-respect. Besides the traditional self-care tips (i.e., self-massage, journaling, hot bath, creative activity, stretching, organizing), here are a few strategies for filling your cup, with the intention of creating overflow to share with and better serve others: • Speak kindly to and about yourself. You teach others how to treat you by how you treat yourself. What self-image do the words you express toward yourself reflect? Would you speak to or about someone you love and respect with the same words? • Honor your values and boundaries. Our cups are drained empty when we become too busy to abide in presence — the present moment awareness of what is… what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel — and lose sight of our own needs and desires.

• Embrace your humanness. Meeting yourself where you are means acknowledging your character strengths and weaknesses (taking the bad with the good). Exhibiting self-compassion when your choices lead to inner discord is a demonstration of your innate worthiness of love as a birthright, not something you have to earn. The Overflow Instead of perpetually operating from a half-full cup, set an intention to place your attention on filling your cup — and keeping it full, so it easily spills over into others. Building a more loving, trusting relationship with yourself, through actions that support your physical, psychological and spiritual growth, empowers you to make healthier choices in all areas of your life, from relationships to food to finances. The resulting confidence and peace of mind enables you to be more genuinely loving toward others and to be of greater service to the world at large.

Exercise: What do you most need to hear? At the end of the day, take a moment to think about or write down those things you most needed to hear from others — whether it be that they love you, admire you, appreciate you, forgive you, that they are sorry or anything else. Recognize that you have the power to give yourself the gift of these words. Let the influence of these words settle into your state of being, and you will soon enjoy a sense of self-love and inner peace that you never had before.

In 2020, may your cup overfloweth!

WELLNESS

Follow Doctor Sara’s Orders: Using a humidifier can help replenish water content in your home air: The heater in your home will be running often during these upcoming cold months, which has a nonstop drying effect. The humidifier replaces the lost moisture in the air.

Avoid sitting in front of a fireplace or heat source: The heater in your house is already contributing to dryness. The fireplace may feel cozy, but being too close to the heat source can tip your skin over the edge this season.

Winter Advisory Dr. Sara Moghaddam shares her checklist to ensure your skin is protected from the elements

T

here are many things to look forward to this winter season, but winter’s dramatically dry air is not one of them. Did you know that dryness of your skin can cause itching, eczema and worsening of existing skin conditions? Be prepared this season and fight back! Here are some tips I share with my patients that will help your skin stay hydrated and comfortable: If you develop a rash this winter, see your board-certified dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment: Severe dry skin can develop into eczema. The skin can become bright red and inflamed, itchy, cracked or flaky and sometimes weepy when severe. Other skin conditions, such as psoriasis, can worsen in the winter. A dermatologist can evaluate, diagnose and treat the skin appropriately with prescription treatment.

74

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

Mature skin requires more aggressive moisturizing measures: As we age, the skin barrier declines, and our bodies do not produce the natural skin oils like we did earlier in life. Proper care is critical to prevent skin breakdown, irritation and rash. A gentle, fragrance-free cream is a good place to start, but if you are finding yourself still dry, you may need to step up to an ointment or petroleum.

Petroleum jelly applied to lips can prevent chapped lips: This is the richest moisturizer one could use this season. While you may not like the slickness of petroleum jelly as a full-body moisturizer, it is great for small, localized areas, such as the lips. It is also great for barrier protection, to prevent irritation from saliva, foods and drinks.

Keep moisturizer by your sink to apply after hand washing: When you wash your hands, you strip away your natural skin oils, and the hands can become dry and cracked. Remember to apply a moisturizer immediately after washing to lock in hydration.

Cover up outside, since cold air and wind will strip hydration from your skin: Use gloves, scarves and hats to limit the cold air contact to the skin. The temperature extremes can also contribute to irritation and itching.

Limit baths and showers to no more than 10 minutes: Short-duration bathing gives your skin a chance to become rehydrated. Longer baths or showers can have the opposite effect. Also, limit bathing to just once daily. Use warm water instead of hot: The higher water temperature will strip your skin’s natural oils away. Our skin barrier needs these oils to keep moisture inside and protect the skin from external stressors. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free soap or cleanser: Although fragrant, flowery shower gels or the masculinesmelling soaps may be tempting, these are not ideal. They are extremely drying, and the fragrance can also cause itchy irritation to the skin.

After bathing, pat dry with a towel and apply moisturizer immediately: Your skin is still damp at this time, and the moisturizer helps seal the moisture into the skin. Use soft towels, and do not be too abrasive while drying off. Choose a cream or ointment to put on the skin rather than a lotion: Lotions have less oil content. Although a lotion may be adequate during summer months, fragrance-free creams and ointments are much better selections for winter. They are made with higher amounts of oil, which is why they are richer and thicker when applied. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil and petrolatum. cs

Some counties now mandate sprinklers for new construction, and many property owners would not have enough coverage to rebuild and install sprinkler systems that satisfy the current code. By purchasing increased ordinance or law coverage, you are protected. On the personal insurance side, many people mistakenly think their homeowner’s policy covers boats, recreational vehicles, business on-premises and flood coverage, but it doesn’t. Where your home is located is a big factor in determining which company will offer you the best options. This is why we are proud to offer choices with multiple companies, which allows us to offer insurance solutions for everyone. RENOVATIONS ARE POPULAR IN OUR AREA. The long-term financial success of their clients drives Nicholas (“Nick”) Williams and Thomas (“Tom”) Kimmerle to be their very best each and every day. To that end, the founding partners of The Harbor East Group at Morgan Stanley are expanding their practice to the Eastern Shore and will be holding client meetings in their Rehoboth Beach offices. “We are expanding our practice to Rehoboth because our clients are retiring to the Delaware Beaches, and we want to be closer to them,” said Tom, who has owned a home at the beach in Sawgrass North since 2016 and will meet with clients regularly in Rehoboth. Tom and Nick formed The Harbor East Group of Morgan Stanley four years ago in an effort to provide a holistic team approach for their clients. They believe a team approach allows for different perspectives when conducting research and executing a family’s financial plan. “We start every relationship with a

conversation and a personalized financial plan,” Nick said. “This process allows us to take a holistic approach to wealth management and gives our clients a framework to which they can measure their success. By running a boutique practice, building customized portfolios and delivering individual attention, our clients may potentially achieve their desired outcomes.” Collectively, Tom and Nick have over 40 years of experience and industry accreditations, which are well respected for their difficulty, rigor and emphasis on putting clients first. Each holds Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Analyst designations, respectively. New clients of The Harbor East Group can expect white-gloved service and customized portfolios. “We run a boutique practice, so we have more time and attention to devote to our clients,” Tom said. “We are looking to create long-term relationships with our clients built on trust and mutual respect.

These core values are the foundation of The Harbor East Group’s relationships with their clients, and helping realize successful results provides Nick and Tom with tremendous pride and achievement. “It brings us great joy when we help achieve the financial outcomes from a client’s financial plan,” Nick said. “When a client is able to live their best financial life and pass on their legacy of wealth and values, we feel a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It is the reason why we work so hard for our clients. In our view, the best compliment a client can give is a referral.” When not at work, Tom can be found gardening at his Rehoboth residence, reading a book on the beach or hosting friends over a home-cooked meal. Nick, who married his wife, Calista, in October 2017, runs a small charity in his free time. The couple enjoys playing board games and traveling when they’re not spending time with family.

JEFF MONTGOMERY MONTGOMERY FINANCIAL SERVICES

410-208-1004 MontgomeryFinancialServices.com WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISTAKES YOU SEE INVESTORS MAKE WITH THEIR INVESTMENTS? The biggest mistake I see investors make is making changes to their portfolios or their investment strategies based on the emotions of either fear or greed during short-term market conditions. The emotions of fear and greed and the behavior that follows typically lead to performance losses that can be hard to recover from. Sticking with a prudent strategy and hanging on through tough market conditions can produce great results for investors. HOW DO YOU COACH INVESTORS TO STAY DISCIPLINED WITH THEIR INVESTMENT STRATEGIES? This is achieved through consistent education and community. One of the most rewarding things about my career is getting together with all my clients, in a classroom setting, and teaching classes on a regular basis. It connects my clients with me in a way that I don’t think many other investment firms do. By bringing investors together to learn and understand their investment strategies, we are building a support structure for sticking with the program. WHAT WAS THE HARDEST LESSON YOU HAD TO LEARN ABOUT THE INDUSTRY? The industry at large really doesn’t have the best interests of the client at heart. Big brokerage firms and their advisors are really in the business of selling products. Chances are those products are good for the advisors but may not be good for the client. Prudent investing and discipline pay off in the long-run. Chasing what’s hot, or the latest and greatest investing gimmick, leads investors to make very poor decisions that can have devastating consequences to their long-term success. WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR INVESTORS TO KNOW ABOUT THE INVESTING PROCESS? The good news is you don’t have to know everything, as long as you know the right things. We’re bombarded with investing information, and it’s hard to ignore it all. Most of it is useless and harmful to the investor’s state of mind. Investing is really a lifelong process. It may sound daunting, but true success comes from a lifetime of investing and sticking to a prudent investment strategy in good times and bad.

Home Is Where The Heart Is FOLLOWING THE PASSING OF HER MOTHER AND SISTER, SUSAN EUBANK FULFILLED A DREAM BY COMPLETELY RENOVATING HER FAMILY’S BETHANY BEACH COTTAGE — WHILE PRESERVING A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES

fter her mother and sister passed away two years ago, Susan Eubank decided she wanted to make her mother’s transformation dreams for their family’s beloved Bethany Beach cottage a reality as a tribute to them both. She knew this was not going to be a typical renovation, given that she was seeking to preserve the memories of their loved ones’ longstanding “home away from home,” which was originally built by her grandfather in the 1940s, while bringing it new life. Given the uniqueness of the project, she decided to enlist the collaborative help of reputable local experts, including designer Joyce Galello of Joyce G. Design LLC, Tim Tribbet of Hickman Builders and architectural designer Barbara Nowakowski of Design Dreams.

Sentimental Space Susan Eubank, left, hired a trio of experts, including Joyce Galello, right, to transform the Bethany Beach cottage built by her grandfather.

Joyce Galello, a design veteran with a National Certification for Interior Design, demonstrated her expertise by balancing and blending the old and new interior finishings of the home, while creating a magnificent antique coastal-themed dwelling. At first glance, the transformation is extreme, having gone from dreary wooden paneling and harsh carpeting to a stunning, bright, seaside-inspired interior. However, as you look a bit closer, it is easy to see the many memories and tiny details of the home that remained intact, just integrated in a fresh, new way. “Anything sentimental that I wanted to keep or create, Joyce found a way to make it happen and ensure it looked beautiful,” shared Susan.

ES Audio/Video optimized for integration. One particular example was an antique chandelier, which Susan wished to retain and incorporate. After they recognized it just was not working in its current location, Joyce suggested it should be moved to the newly designed bathroom, where it adds a touch of elegance to a typically lackluster room. “I wanted the final product to allow for all of our family members to stay and always fit comfortably, and we discovered an expansion was necessary in order to achieve this,” shared Susan. Leveraging his years of experience, Tim Tribbet carried out the construction, all while taking a hands-on and collaborative approach. In addition, Tim oversaw a half-demolition and full rebuild to ensure the home was structurally sound and brought up to code. He also enlisted the help of skilled carpenter and son Tyler to construct the bunk bed structure (above). John Powell lent his talents to the project by creating a sturdy and appealing headboard (far left) that precisely matched Susan’s cherished fireplace, which she considers to be the heart of the home. Joyce and her daughter, Michelle, an art teacher at Stephen Decatur High School, crackled and distressed its finish to blend in harmony with the antique pieces Susan wanted to keep in the home. Barbara Nowakowski, an architectural designer with 32 years of experience, collaborated with Tim and Joyce as she designed and drew up a completely transformed layout for the home. Her objective was to incorporate Susan’s ideas and make certain every existing or added space was being used in the most efficient way possible. “It was a fun challenge, as there were many new architectural elements we completed, such as the built-in bunk beds, heightened ceilings, and even a new upper deck off of one of the bedrooms,” shared Barbara. Ultimately, the three professionals’ cohesive approach proved successful in bringing Susan’s, as well as her late loved ones’, visions to fruition, thereby ensuring the home can continue to serve as their family’s summer sanctuary for many years to come. cs

POWER PLAY This Green Street Solar client in Rehoboth Beach had 63 solar panels installed atop their residence. In addition to dramatic savings on energy costs, solar systems like this one can increase a home’s value by an estimated $15,000.

ohn and Susan Bramer set their thermostat to 67 degrees and remain diligent about turning lights off when leaving rooms in their 4,000-square-foot Rehoboth Beach home. But they have used valuable outside help to reduce their monthly electric bill from $300 to nothing in just six months. “I’m literally paying zero dollars,” John Bramer said, and he has Green Street Solar in Selbyville and installations manager Russell Pfaller to thank. Pfaller shed light on the energy- and money-saving benefits they can gain from a solar-panel system during a home fair the couple attended in Lewes last spring. Their decision to install a system, even at a cost of $39,000, quickly became as clear to the Bramers as a sunny Eastern Shore day.

It’s great to be green, but it’s even better to keep more green in your pocket. The savings already are adding up as their electrical consumption from local power grids has decreased. The State of Delaware paid $3,000 of the total cost, Bramer said, as part of a statewide initiative toward using greener sources of energy. The couple earns credits on their monthly bill by selling renewable-energy credits to the electric company, which come from unused electricity the solar-panel system generates. They also look forward to a $10,000 credit on their 2019 federal income-tax return for installing the system last summer. Pfaller estimates that solarpanel systems like the one installed at the Bramers’ home raise home values by an average of $15,000.

“Additional state and local rebates may be also available to help reduce total costs significantly,” Pfaller said. “In addition to substantial savings on their electric bills, most homeowners realized total payback in five to seven years, with 20-year-savings estimates upwards of $20,000.”

The Bramers’ system features a series of panels across the roof on the southeast side of their home and a cable that runs from those panels to equipment that converts solar power to usable energy, with another two boxes that connect to the power grid. The system operates during the

day, depending on the amount of available sunlight, which limits the need for traditional electrical power. “I have not had a bill since the day it was installed,” Bramer said. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it’s been as good as it has.” According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, solar power is the world’s fastest-growing energy source. At the current rate, the Union of Concerned Scientists reports nearly 3.8 million homes will feature photovoltaic power systems this year. Green Street Solar is leading the revolution locally by providing customers with a comprehensive plan and unmatched service that continues long after installation. Green Street Solar sold and installed more than 100 systems in 2019, which allowed customers to earn a 30% federal tax credit. The credit falls to 26% this year and 22% in 2021, so time is running out to reap these benefits.

C

BECKER MORGAN GROUP’S TRANSFORMATION OF A DELAWARE BEACH HOME INCLUDED REMOVING AND REDESIGNING THE ROOF OF THE RESIDENCE.

hristopher Pattey has seen virtually every kind of challenge in his 30 years of architecture design. But removing the roof off a home in order to turn a key portion from a design into reality, well, “that’s kind of a big deal,” said Pattey, senior associate at Becker Morgan Group in Salisbury. But Pattey’s design, and the work of Lewes-based builder Garrison Homes, pulled off that impressive feat and much more during a three-year home-renovation project at North Indian Beach in Delaware’s Sussex County. The roof was replaced by a deck with panoramic 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay. The owners unveiled that breathtaking space and the rest of what felt like a brand-new home to amazed family members and friends last Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer. Even Pattey had to take it all in after the work was done. “The house was stripped. Pretty much everything was touched there,” he said. “It’s very rewarding as a designer to conceive something in your mind that satisfies the owners’ wishes and comes out like that. Garrison Homes did a really outstanding job in getting the owners’ wish list, which we designed within their budget while not sacrificing quality. To see it come to fruition is very rewarding.” The owners had two goals in mind — to turn their home into the-place-to-be in the summer and to have the views around them accentuate the beachfront atmosphere. Pattey understood the challenge he faced with the existing inverted floor plan. He had to turn the main living area, on the top floor; guest bedrooms, on the middle floor; and lone entrance and covered parking, on the first floor, into a beautifully open space that also was convenient for guests.

Everyone Gather Around Pattey’s design covered all of the wish list items of the homeowners, including this spacious and impressive open-air entertaining area. Fully retractable window panels allow for an inviting extension of living space, while the staircase leads guests to the rooftop deck complete with panoramic views.

94

CoastalStyleMag.com • Jan/Feb 2020

The rooftop deck was merely one step. The 180-degree change began with a new, grand upper-floor entrance, which, Pattey said, “replaced the existing utilitarian-style piling-level vestibule entrance, giving the house an iconic identity.” An elevator that seamlessly blends into the home’s overall décor linked the first floor with the top floor and every inch of space in between. The project also features a second bathroom on the first floor, which eliminated long lines that often formed outside the other bathroom, and a new kitchen for entertaining. The owners also gained a wonderful living space

for themselves, in the form of a new master bedroom suite toward the rear of the home. “They wanted to have a wow factor and curb appeal,” Pattey said of the project, which began with the design phase, in 2016. But it wasn’t easy to accomplish. Pattey said the project required a lot of “structural gymnastics” inside and outside of the home. “It was challenging structurally, challenging from a permit standpoint,” he said. “We had to get variances to change the footprint of the house, because it was not really compliant with the neighboring structures. There’s always budget issues to

get everything from the wish list to come to reality.” Meeting height restrictions was especially evident while building the rooftop deck, as well as raising ceilings by several feet on the top floor. Given the project’s complex nature, the owners wondered at times if it would be completed before the North Indian Beach neighborhood’s Memorial Day weekend deadline for home construction

work. The final step, moving furniture back into the home, was completed just a few days before that long three-day weekend in May. The couple’s well-attended social gatherings with family and friends commenced that same weekend. “It was a very enjoyable process with the homeowners,” Pattey said. “They were terrific to work with. The builder was terrific to work with, and it was very successful in the end.” cs
