We are so pleased she’s been recognized in this way.” After growing up in Pocomoke, Murray and went into nursing as a young mom. “I wanted to be a lactation consultant, and that required a registered nurse (RN) associates degree. Once I was in the program, I decided to go into hospice care while working in the oncology department at PRMC. I saw how essential it was to have a good end-of-life experience. It is important that it be personalized and meaningful for the patient and the family.” Murray earned her RN degree at Wor-Wic Community College, then a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse designation through rigorous testing. Today she is completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree with University of Phoenix while raising two children, ages 10 and 15, in Ocean City. “I am so grateful for all the good wishes I have received from this,” she added. “It really is a wonderful surprise.” Coastal Hospice provides patients with terminal illnesses and their families with an array of services that include home hospice, residential hospice at Macky & Pam Stansell House, care at Coastal Hospice by the Lake, palliative care and bereavement counseling. Its “Coastal Compass” is a free nonmedical program that connects clients to community resources such as meals and transportation. Coastal Hospice, which addresses three core aspects of care — medical, emotional and spiritual — is a benefit provided through insurance or Medicare. here are many beautiful spots in the Delmarva region to enjoy fall foliage, but nothing can beat the view from a hot-air balloon. Soaring high above the treetops and observing nature’s spectrum from above is an adventure unlike any other. “Fall is undoubtedly the most beautiful time to take a balloon ride,” said Todd Davis, founder and owner of Delmarva Balloon Rides. “The temperature is perfect, and the scenery is spectacular.” Twenty years ago, a chance encounter led to Davis’ lifelong passion for ballooning. He was working in a restaurant when a customer mentioned that he needed an extra hand to help crew his hot-air balloon. Davis jumped at the opportunity, and after one ride, he was hooked. He soon got his license as a commercial balloon pilot and in 2008 created Delmarva Balloon Rides, one of only a handful of hot-air balloon companies in the Mid-Atlantic. The company operates a fleet of eight balloons with baskets that can hold anywhere from two to 10 passengers. Flights take off from Ridgley or Greensboro in Caroline County. Since the 18th century, people have been fascinated with the magic of hot-air ballooning. The use of hot air to generate buoyancy has a simplicity that continues to appeal, even more so in modern times. In the past few months, the pastime has brought a whole new brand of customer, looking for a solitary or socially distanced adventure. “I am pretty busy most of the year, but since the pandemic, business is booming,” Davis said. Six or seven mornings per week, Davis is up before sunrise to test the winds and weather before taking a small group up on a flight. After setting up the basket that will carry his passengers, Davis tests the propane torch that powers the balloon. Hot-air balloons are powered by a propane tank, which heats the air inside the balloon, expanding the material and eventually causing it to rise from the ground. Prior to takeoff, Davis often releases a small helium balloon with a light inside, to see where it travels.

Once in the air, a patchwork quilt of the area’s farmland, forests and rivers unfolds. The balloon climbs 2,000 feet as passengers are treated to 360-degree views, the rising sun illuminating the sky, painting the treetops orange, red and gold. The sun reflects on the nearby Choptank River and glistens across the Bay in the distance.

“There are a lot of factors that go into a successful flight,” Davis said. “Because ballooning is based on the winds that day, I will often do a test before takeoff, to gauge the direction of the wind.” Indeed, weather phenomena play a significant role in ballooning. Winds must be ideal and cannot exceed 5 or 6 mph at takeoff. Storms in the area must be at least 100 miles away, and clouds should be high enough that the balloon remains at least 500 feet below any cloud cover. Early morning is the ideal time for a balloon flight, as thermal heating that occurs throughout the day plays a role in conditions. When the weather is ideal, ballooning can be safer than car travel, and accidents are extremely rare. According to statistics from the National Transportation Safety Board, ballooning is the safest sport in air aviation. Davis notes that the biggest surprise

in ballooning is what a calm ride it can be. Because the balloon rises with the heat and is directed by the winds, the flight can feel almost motionless. “I have a lot of passengers who are afraid to fly on a plane, who are maybe afraid of heights, and they are always pleasantly surprised by how peaceful a balloon flight can be,” Davis said. “I joke that they will go from chicken to eagle in as little as 30 seconds.” The hour-long flight is followed by Champagne and a short discussion of the history of hot-air ballooning. Passengers receive a certificate commemorating their first balloon flight and have the option to purchase a video of the experience. For most, the flight will be a once-in-alifetime opportunity. For Davis, who operates hundreds of flights per year, the novelty still hasn’t worn off. “It just never gets old.” cs

What is it that drives Duffy outside to explore this distinctly rural peninsula? He answers quickly. “It’s beautiful,” he noted with a lilt of appreciation in his voice. He then thoughtfully reminded that “though it looks like it’s timeless and unchanging, the landscape has evolved,” a point that his books and their warm storytelling make consistently clear. The inscription in some of the signed copies of the Eastern Shore Road Trips books is direct. “Get out and go!” he often writes. After even a cursory reading, that admonition inspires the once uninterested to become amateur explorers and historians looking for their own unique experiences and memories — not for a weekend but for decades. im Duffy knows Delmarva. Creator of the Secrets of the Eastern Shore website and author of the popular Eastern Shore Road Trips books, he writes and speaks with an exuberance and knowledge that puts all but the most hardened local historians to shame. His clear eye for the beauty and stories of the area not only fuels the passions of tourists but fascinates residents, as well. Originally from Chicago, Duffy moved to Baltimore, where he worked as a writer for Maryland magazines. The move was significant. There, he not only met his wife and collaborator/ photographer, Jill Jasuta, but was given an assignment that took him to Tilghman Island to produce a story on the skipjack Rebecca T. Ruark. Somewhere near where the mouth of the Choptank River and the Chesapeake Bay meet, his interest in the Eastern Shore grew into a fascination. In 2004, Duffy and Jasuta moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Only after the move and taking time to steep in the subtly beautiful landscape and spending unhurried time with locals did he begin to understand “how unique the culture really is.” Its uniqueness continues to inspire him today. The Pittsburgh native’s family lineage is directly connected to Brian Boru, who ruled as the High King of Ireland from 1002-1014 and is widely regarded as one of the most successful and unifying monarchs of medieval times. Denny was born the day before St. Patrick’s Day in 1980 and married the love of his life, Kateryna, on the famous Irish holiday in 2006. The proud father

of sons Michael, 8, and Jack, 5, Denny enjoys an ideal homelife and possesses a joyful and charismatic personality that creates instant and lifelong bonds. He is fundamentally known for being one of the friendliest and most accommodating individuals one could meet. Denny is also a man of deep-rooted faith in God who serves an elected elder at Wicomico Presbyterian Church and volunteers on various parish committees. After moving to Salisbury in 1992, Denny was a student at Bennett Middle and High Schools before attending Hampden-Sydney College and Salisbury University. He would go on to work in the local restaurant industry, acquiring knowledge while climbing each rung of the ladder, eventually becoming the general manager of EVO Public House and later an integral member of the brewery’s beverage division. In November 2019, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening a restaurant of his very own — Mogan’s Oyster House on East Main Street, in the heart of downtown Salisbury.

As its core revitalization continues, Salisbury civic and business leaders pointed to entrepreneurs like Denny as an anchor of the community — one who’s vision, work ethic and determination would help return the area to prominence. Mogan’s Oyster House quickly carved its niche as one of the area’s premier fine-dining establishments and the place in town for a genuine rawbar/seafood experience. The restaurant’s reviews in the media and online are glowing, extolling its warm atmosphere, exceptional customer service and delectable meals created by Executive Chef David Wells. The readers of Coastal Style honored Mogan’s Oyster House with a record five Best Of 2020 awards, including Best New Restaurant and Best Chef — the most for a first-time entry on the readers’ poll. For as close to perfect as Denny Mogan’s life appeared, Kateryna and others close to him were growing concerned by the periodic instances of slurred speech, painful swelling of his feet and sheer exhaustion.

Dating back to late last summer, everyone originally attributed his ailments to the 12-to-16-hour days Denny was working to prepare Mogan’s for its grand opening. But as such episodes continued, Kateryna sought medical advice to determine their nature and what course of treatment could benefit her husband. Months of uncertainly, coupled with countless blood tests, body scans, specialists’ appointments and anxiously waiting for results, followed — all while readying, opening and operating a brand-new, bustling restaurant. In early spring, already confronted with the mandated closure of Mogan’s due to Covid-19 and the stressful uncertainty it presented, Johns Hopkins’ doctors ultimately made their diagnosis.

On March 17, 2020, just one day after he turned 40 and on their 16th wedding anniversary, Denny and Kateryna announced to Mogan’s staff that he had bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most aggressive form of the debilitating neurodegenerative disease, which has no cure. To all who know him, it felt like Denny’s lifetime of justly accrued golden Irish luck had been instantly and cruelly stolen. “How could this happen to a person so young, who generously gave so much love and kindness to everyone around him?” those around the room asked one another. Just as cruelly, ALS presents few warning signs, and a diagnosis comes after a lengthy elimination process of other potential diseases. There is no effective treatment to halt, or reverse, its progression. Since the devasting news, family, friends, coworkers and the greater Wicomico County community have rallied to assist the Mogan family in any capacity — from grass cutting to a GoFundMe initiative that has raised more than $36,000 as of mid-August. Kateryna, a teacher at Snow Hill Middle School, has been able to care for Denny and their children from home since the pandemic forced the implementation of distance-learning measures, which are still in place in the Worcester County Public School system as it enters the new academic year. Denny’s younger brother, Brad, immediately took a leave of absence from his general-manager duties at The Establishment, a popular seafood restaurant in Charleston, SC, to relocate to Salisbury and oversee operations at Mogan’s Oyster House. Friends Jayme Clarke and Rob Mulford have created a series of fundraising events, named “Downtown for Denny,” which began on Sunday, August 30 at Market Street Inn. Brew River, Roadie Joe’s and MoJo’s in Salisbury, as well as Burley Oak in Berlin, will host subsequent fundraisers.

Now nonverbal due to the progression of his disease, Denny graciously gave us an exclusive interview via email in mid-August to share his thoughts on several topics: JW: How are you doing currently, Denny? Are you in a lot of pain? Is your medicine helping you? DM: My disease is progressing very rapidly. Not so much discomfort. Believe it or not, there is not a whole lot they can do for a diagnosis of ALS — some medications can extend life by a few months. How has your faith in God helped you cope with your illness? I am a man of faith. I believe God has a plan for all of us; we may not be privy to it, but he does have a plan. How did it feel to learn Mogan’s Oyster House won five Best Of 2020 awards in Coastal Style, including Best New Restaurant and Best Chef? I’m beyond-words-excited for the staff, managers and our chef, David Wells. He has deserved this for a long time. It’s a great tribute for the staff, without whom, none of this would possible. What do you want our community to know about ALS? There is no cure for ALS; the average life expectancy is 2 to 5 years. We have certain drugs, proven to slow progression, that are in phase-3 trials, but we do not have access to them at this time. ALS is under-researched, and it can take up to a year to get a diagnosis. We are no closer to finding a cure than we were 70 years ago.

What would you like for Kateryna, Michael and Jack to hold on to in the future? To Katya: Your devotion to me through my illness leaves me in awe. To my boys: Hold fast to your integrity — everything else will fall into place. What do you want your legacy to be? I want my legacy to be someone who was a hard worker, did the right thing by people, someone with integrity and someone who put family first.

Safe Adventure We’ve all been spending a lot of time outdoors lately, and it’s a beautiful time of year to do just that. Whether you’re camping, hiking, bird-watching or boating, here are some tips to ensure your activities are safe and fun-filled. Wear sunscreen. You might think you can skip the sunscreen on a cloudy day, but that’s not the case -- the sun’s UV rays can be just as harmful. To protect yourself from skin cancer and premature aging, always use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Keep the bugs at bay. If you’re planning to spend time outdoors, apply an insect repellent. If you’re in an area where ticks are prevalent, be sure to check your skin, take a shower and change your clothes upon returning inside. Some ticks can be so small they are difficult to see, and many can transmit diseases to animals and people. Get a weather report. Keep an eye on the weather forecast before heading outside. Always pack for inclement weather — including rain, high heat and humidity — and avoid activities on the water when thunderstorms are expected. Pack a first-aid kit. Accidents can happen, so it’s important to be prepared. No matter where you’re going or what activity is planned, it’s good practice to carry a small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, medical tape and a list of emergency phone numbers.

COVID-19 vaccine volunteers pave the way for a return to normal The novel 2019 coronavirus has drastically altered the way we all live. While measures such as mask wearing, social distancing and temporary closings have made a difference, they are not long-term, sustainable solutions. To protect the most vulnerable from COVID-19, a safe, effective vaccine is vital. Operation Warp Speed is a national campaign, backed by the national Department of Health and Human Services, to make a COVID-19 vaccine as quickly and widely available as possible, so we can return to vibrant social gatherings and bustling businesses once more. Select groups of researchers are working on a vaccine right now as part of this effort, and anyone can volunteer to be part of a trial, although not every volunteer will be chosen. Those who meet one of the needed demographics will be contacted by a research team to enroll. In the current test phase, researchers are particularly focused on people at highest risk, such as those with other health conditions or occupations that make COVID-19 more of a threat.

If you are selected for a trial, there are a few things to know: • You may not actually receive the vaccine – placebos will also be used for some people as part of the study. Some will be exposed to COVID-19 as part of their everyday lives, and the clinical trial will enroll large numbers of people to see if the percentage of those who become sick is smaller than the population at large. • Researchers will check in with participants often. If any do end up with COVID-19, they will be closely monitored to ensure they stay as healthy as possible, and connected with any additional care they may need. • People who join a study are compensated for their time and inconvenience. n untamed wilderness is hiding in plain sight. It is an iconic view of the quietly beautiful and soggy marshlands of the Chesapeake Bay region and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It is a place that makes you feel like you are immersed in nature, not just observing it. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, sitting just south of Cambridge, was established in 1933 as a waterfowl sanctuary for birds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway. Birds of all species are plentiful, but most of the 150,000 yearly visitors hope to get a soaring glimpse of the majestic American bald eagle. Sitting peacefully in the middle of the Delmarva Peninsula is the largest breeding population of American bald eagles on the East Coast, north of Florida. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is referred to as “The Everglades of the North.” It is an apt description, though most Delmarva residents are thankful that alligators are not a local attraction. Replete with native birds of the East Coast, the refuge will make a birdwatcher’s head spin in giddy, flitting excitement while catching glimpses of songbirds, waterfowl, gulls and various raptors. The spring and fall migrations bring a parade of nonnative species, which, like clockwork, fly through each year on their journeys to other, less pristine, areas. in the refuge. There are also snow geese and a kaleidoscope of ducks that announce their arrival but in a slightly less noisome way. Blackwater NWR is home not only to feathered natural wonder but also to the formerly endangered Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel, red foxes, sika deer and the lovably furry, semiaquatic muskrat. Visitors can get a close view of the humble muskrat lodges that rise like small grassy blisters in the mud and brackish water along the marshy shoreline. The Little Blackwater River courses through the center of the refuge’s 30,000 protected acres. Ponds are scattered along the shore and bleed into the river in a blur of soft, steady tidal comings and goings. “Water, water every where, / Nor any a drop to drink,” might have been Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s ode to the

marshlands of the refuge instead of to an ancient mariner, because the description is suited to what lies beyond the spongy shoreline. Unless visitors walk on the well-cared-for Wildlife Drive through the heart of the refuge, or hike through the stands of loblolly pines and white oaks that rise from the high ground, their visits would consist solely of wading through the wetlands that naturally line the banks of the Eastern Shore. The lands of the refuge are continuously wild but never dramatic. There are no mountains, no waterfalls or other obvious wonders that draw awestruck tourists to visit and leave laden with T-shirts, keychains and coffee mugs. The scenery is simple and quiet but filled with subtle reasons to get out and explore what remains hidden to many but beautiful to all. cs

“T

he Blackwater has plenty of stories to tell,” said Matt Meredith, operations manager of Blackwater Adventures, as he shares another anecdote of the region’s history and wildlife while guiding us on a kayaking tour up the Little Blackwater River. We paddle on, listening to tales of the refuge’s earliest inhabitants and its most famous resident, Harriet Tubman. Each story has this in common: At its heart is the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a landscape of rare and unspoiled splendor. I had heard about the magic of the Blackwater, of its vast tidal marshes and more than 280 species of resident birds, for years. But I never visited until recently. Tucked away on a peninsula 12 miles south of Cambridge, the Blackwater NWR boasts 30,000 acres of pristine wilderness. Determined to see if the Blackwater NWR lived up to its name as the “Everglades of the North,” I set out to explore by both land and sea. I called Blackwater Adventures, the area’s only tour company dedicated to biking, kayaking, fishing and paddleboarding the refuge. The company’s headquarters, just outside the refuge entrance, on the banks of the Little Blackwater River, makes it the perfect spot to launch a kayak.

READY FOR LAUNCH Blackwater Adventures’ HQ is the ideal spot to begin a kayak excursion for a day of communing with nature.

Matt Meredith is my guide for the morning paddle and afternoon bike ride. After a brief safety lesson and some paddling tips, we climb into our kayaks and adjust the pedals and backrests for a comfortable ride. Matt carefully explains how to use the blade of the paddle efficiently, so I won’t tire easily, and we are off, gliding out of the cove and into the river. The name Blackwater is derived from the tea-colored waters, which are darkened from the tannin that is picked up as the water drains through the peat soil in the marshes. Indeed, its cloudy appearance makes it difficult to discern the depth or the water’s inhabitants. Matt assures us that the river is only a few feet deep, making it an ideal setting for novice kayakers. Shallow and brackish, he explains that the river attracts fishermen in search of the elusive snakehead fish, a culinary delicacy. The lack of current makes for an easy paddle, and soon we are far from shore, passing several osprey nests, in search of our first eagle sighting. The Blackwater NWR boasts the largest concentration of nesting bald eagles north of Florida, and we are quickly rewarded for our efforts as we spy a giant eagle’s nest through a stand of loblolly pines. A closer look as we paddle around the side of the marsh reveals its owner, a majestic bald eagle perched on a nearby branch. We paddle on, watching an osprey swoop low across the river, and at the next turn, we are greeted by a great blue heron, wading for fish near the shoreline. A paddle through the Blackwater is a fully immersive experience, unspoiled by the hum of motorboats or road noise. The only sound as we make our way up the river is the distant drumming of a woodpecker and the gentle lapping of waves as we slice through the water.

Paddling past a huge stretch of marsh grass, we look for muskrats and other critters. Matt explains the federal government’s efforts to protect the grass from invasive species, like nutria, a rodent that was introduced to the refuge in the 1940s by trappers who sold their fur. The rodent’s voracious appetite for marshlands has destroyed thousands of acres of wetland over the years, but through the Chesapeake Bay Nutria Eradication project, they have nearly vanished from the area. At every turn, it becomes clear that Matt Meredith is not your average outdoor enthusiast. Certified as a Master Naturalist, his breadth of knowledge about the land and its inhabitants is staggering. As a teen, he began working at a nearby conservation, and he shares his family’s passion for preserving and promoting the area’s natural resources. “When you dive deep into this stuff, it leaves you wanting to know more,” he said. “I believe that as a student of nature and wildlife, it takes a lifetime to know it all.” Noting that his mother, Susan Meredith, was also out on the river that day, on a guided paddle with an expert birder, Matt directs us farther upriver, to another eagle’s nest, this one even larger than the first. Our late-summer paddle is filled with sightings of heron, eagles and osprey, but the refuge truly comes alive in the fall, when upwards of 35,000 geese and 15,000 ducks descend on the area. The refuge’s mix of salt and fresh water attracts a huge variety of river and puddle ducks, such as widgeons, mallards and black ducks. “In the fall, the refuge becomes a huge melting pot of every kind of waterfowl imaginable, and the roar of the ducks and

geese can wake you up at night,” Matt said. We arrive back at the creek bank, eager to gain a new perspective of the refuge on land. Suiting up with helmets and bikes, we head out toward Wildlife Drive, at the entrance of the refuge, just a quarter-mile down the road. An enormous butterfly garden, home to a variety of flora and fauna, greets visitors at the park’s entrance. Biking up Wildlife Drive, we spot another great blue heron, sunning itself in the freshwater wetland. Matt explains how the wildlife service drains the wetlands during the summer months to encourage plant growth, such as wild millet and smartweed, which will later provide food for waterfowl during the fall season. We continue down a stretch of Wildlife Drive before turning toward the Marsh Edge Trail. After a short ride through loblolly pines inhabited by a flock of turkey

vultures, the trail opens up to a vast view of wetlands and marsh as far as the eye can see. The landscape is dotted with dead ghost trees, beautiful in their sparseness, but a harsh reminder of how rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion can wreak havoc on plant life. Since the 1930s, more than 5,000 acres of tidal marsh have been lost in the Blackwater River system. At the end of the Marsh Edge Trail lies an observation platform with panoramic views of the Blackwater River. Matt explains the history of the Nause Waiwash Indians, descendants of the Nanticoke tribes that built cabins along the river. He also points out locations where the remains of trapper cabins from the 1930s can still be found. We head back, turning down the Woods Trail, a forested area that is home to the Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel, a formerly endangered species native to the shore.

Another common sight is the sika deer, an Asian species of elk introduced to the area in the early 20th century. Cloaked in the canopy of the trees, the trail feels a world apart, and aside from the lone birder who is scanning the trees for woodpeckers and swallows, we are the only visitors on the entire stretch of road. Emerging from the forest, we are again greeted with another vast panorama of surrounding marshes and quickly spot a snapping turtle swimming in the tidal waters. Blackwater is home to more than 45 species of reptiles and amphibians, and diamondback and redbelly turtles are a common sight. The trail leads to another observation deck and loops around to the Blackwater Visitors Center, where it connects to a larger network of roads just outside the refuge gates. We reluctantly turn back toward the entrance, soaking in the sights and sounds of the Blackwater: the call of the red-winged blackbird and the majesty of a bald eagle soaring effortlessly across the treeline. After a day paddling its waters and biking its trails, the Blackwater has cast its spell, ensuring my inevitable return. Rachel Carson, the writer, conservationist and Maryland resident, once wrote: “In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand, there is the story of the earth.” The Blackwater indeed has an enduring tale to tell, of a quiet wilderness that whispers its stories, again and again, to all who will listen. cs

or as long as he can remember, Jay Meredith dreamed of owning a company that would rent kayaks for visitors to explore the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. His grandfather had operated a lunch counter and rented small boats on nearby Hooper’s Island, and Jay hoped to follow in his footsteps. In 2002, that dream became a reality, when Jay and his wife, Susan, founded Blackwater Pedal and Paddle just a few miles up the road from the

entrance to Blackwater NWR. “We started with just a handful of kayaks and a few bikes and rented them to weekenders who would visit to explore the refuge.” In 2004, their small business grew when the Hyatt Cambridge Resort was built, ramping up tourism to the area. Within a year, the Merediths were asked to open a second location, on the grounds of the resort. At the Hyatt, Blackwater Adventures expanded to include Jet Ski and boat rentals, in addition to bikes and kayaks.

The company’s main headquarters, just outside the gates of the refuge, offers twice-daily biking and kayaking tours, as well as hourly and daily kayak and bike rentals. The business remains a family affair. All three kids and their spouses are involved in Blackwater Adventures, something Jay says is a dream come true. “It was always our vision to have a business that all of our kids could be involved in,” he says. Jay still works as an engineer for the Maryland Department of Transportation and lends a hand on the weekends, while Susan conducts tours. Their daughter Kacey manages the facilities and headquarters, and son Wesley helps out on the weekends when not managing his own company. Matt Meredith is the company’s operations manager, and he acknowledges the rarity of their setup. “As you get older, you definitely realize what a lucky thing it is that we can all live and work together in such a beautiful place,” he says. Living and working in Dorchester County is nothing new for the Meredith family. For eight generations, their family has resided in this bucolic county on the same land as their ancestors. Jay and Susan live on their family homestead, in a 1790 farmhouse, and all three children and their spouses live within a few miles’ radius.

The family is not only committed to honoring their heritage but to preserving it, too. In the 1980s Jay and Susan bought back the historic Bucktown General Store, which had been in their family for more than a hundred years. The store plays a significant role in the life of Harriet Tubman, and the Meredith family have preserved the store exactly as it was in the 1830s. They operate the Bucktown General Store as a nonprofit and give periodic tours to visitors and educational groups.

“We do feel tied to this land, and I have always tried to instill a sense of pride in our children about Dorchester County and their heritage,” Jay says. That sense of pride is what many say sets their tours apart from the average tourist experience. “We aim to give visitors an authentic experience of the Blackwater,” Jay says. “Our family has lived and worked in these marshes since 1668, so when share its history, we feel like we are sharing our personal history, too.” cs

True Friends, Indeed FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, THE FRIENDS OF BLACKWATER HAVE CONTRIBUTED MIGHTILY TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE BLACKWATER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE HISTORY: Founded in 1987, the Friends of Blackwater (FOB) is an all-volunteer organization with over 500 members who contribute complimentary labor at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (BNWR), as well as fundraising and advocacy support. During its 33-plus years, the Friends of Blackwater have fully funded or matched dollars for more than 50 projects to support and enhance the Refuge’s infrastructure, educational and outreach initiatives.

HOW IT HELPS: Through grants and donations, the Friends of Blackwater helped renovate the Refuge’s Visitor Center, which included an observatory and natural-history library on a new second floor of the building. Here, a set of TV monitors show live activities captured by the Osprey Cam and Eagle Cam, while housing bird exhibits and a birdwatcher’s observatory, where visitors can use spotting scopes to view the Osprey Cam platform, the Blackwater River and the marsh. FOB also manages the Eagle’s Nest Book and Gift Shop, staffs annual events, such as the Eagle Festival and Youth Fishing Fun Day, cares for the Native Butterfly and Beneficial Insect Garden and helps maintain its land trails and paddling trails, among many other duties. BNWR’s Environmental Education building was funded in part by a grant acquired by the Friends of Blackwater, and since 2007, it has offered a venue for numerous workshops and programs for elementary and middle school students from Dorchester County. The Friends of Blackwater also recently installed kiosks and enhanced signage along the paddling trails. The kiosks contain interpretative panels with updated maps and safety information, making the river access points more visible and increasing public use of the water trails. Among many other initiatives, the Friends of Blackwater annually awards up to three scholarships of $3,000 each to Maryland high school students who plan to pursue careers in fish-and-wildlife management, environmental education and science and related fields at the collegiate level. HOW TO HELP: Friends of Blackwater has a large and active volunteer program and is always looking for new members to help on its various committees. Volunteers at the Refuge receive personalized training and enjoy special events, such as an annual crab feast, awards for hours/years served and special trips to thank them for their service. 2020 Real Estate Trends 2020 has been a unique year for real estate in our resort marketplace. With the onset of COVID and the stay at home orders that were in place during the spring, it resulted in almost a halt to the real estate industry. We quickly experienced an absolute ﬂip of the switch where demand went from nothing to far out pacing what we had available. We currently have 2-3 buyers for every new listing that comes into the market ,which has brought about an extremely low inventory.

We currently have just under a 2 ½ months supply of inventory, resulting in seeing prices increase, along with a high demand, bringing about multiple oﬀers with escalation clauses coming into play. It's a unique market place and sellers are pretty much in charge as of right now.

We anticipate a busier fall with people taking advantage of the historically low interest rates, and possibly more inventory hitting the market. We expect with the rental season coming to an end, and the combination of it being a great sellers market, there will be a lot of people taking advantage of this opportunity. It's a perfect storm for both a buyer and a seller.

Election years are always interesting, both nationally, and here locally at the beach. Typically we will experience a bit of a slowdown starting in mid-October, lasting until the results have been tabulated and we have a more clear picture as to what to expect from the next four years. This fall could be diﬀerent, as we have seen an increased demand for the ultimate great escape. We are ﬁnding that many buyers are in search of a place to do distance learning for their children, and work remotely, while at the same time enjoying the outdoors and the beach lifestyle that we have here in the resort. ike most avid travelers, I love exploring undiscovered gems, and the 70-mile peninsula of the Eastern Shore of Virginia is surely one of them. Settled in the 1600s, the Eastern Shore of Virginia has preserved its old-world charm and is filled with historical stories. But there’s another side to the Shore, a side that will have you suspended in the air on a hang glider or hiking through sand dunes to a secluded beach. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is great for the history lover, but it’s also perfect for an outdoors fan like me.

With two coasts, six beaches, charming coastal towns and the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier islands on the East Coast, there’s plenty of adventure to be had — and adventure is my middle name. Whether you err to the daredevil side or are a romantic who just wants to enjoy some peace and quiet as you sojourn with nature, the Eastern Shore of Virginia has it all. You just need to get off Route 13 and explore the best outdoorsy things to do in and around its nooks and crannies.

1. SEE THE PONIES OF CHINCOTEAGUE The story about how the Chincoteague Ponies came to be on these islands (Chincoteague and Assateague) is mired in mystery — which only adds to their intrigue. There are two main theories: Theory 1: These ponies were let loose on the island by early-17th-century settlers in an effort to avoid taxes and building expensive fences around their livestock. Theory 2: These ponies are shipwreck survivors that found themselves marooned on these islands during that rampant 16th–17th-century period when there were a remarkable number of shipwrecks along the mid-Atlantic coastline. No matter which theory excites you the most, taking a day off to bike or hike into the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge to try to spot these ponies will definitely be something worth writing home about. You can easily rent a bike at the Bike Depot. While you are in Chincoteague, take the time to enjoy all the other attractions that it has to offer. From eclectic art galleries to some of the best homemade ice cream you will ever have, at Island Creamery (try a scoop of the appropriately named Pony Tracks), this funky beach town will keep you busy and absolutely elated all day.

Well, now, you have a chance to have that experience in real life and check something amazing off your bucket list — hang gliding! It is one of the top adventurous things to do before you die. At Virginia Hang Gliding, there are a few things that they do differently: Instead of jumping off a cliff, you will be towed up by a plane while strapped in tandem to a state-ofthe-art glider with a professional hang-gliding pilot. Once you hit 2,000 feet, 3,200 feet, 4,000 feet or a mile high (it all depends on how strongly your daredevil whispers into your ear), you will be set loose. From that moment on, until you land, you will experience freedom like you have never known. Your pilot will go as crazy as you let him. Tell him that you like roller coasters — I dare you!

4. HIKE THE SAVAGE NECK DUNES The Savage Neck Dunes is something only the locals know about. And I am giving away the secret, because its beauty is meant to be experienced. An easy hike through a maritime forest leads to pristine sand dunes and a secluded beach (I was the only one there!). It’s completely free, so pack a picnic, a camera and go. This 300-acre preserve has to be one of the most secluded places in Virginia (outside of Tangier Island). On your hike, you will stumble upon miles of dunes, a mostly deserted beach and possibly some colorful butterflies or even a bald eagle.

3. ESCAPE TO TANGIER ISLAND You know how they say there are some places in the Galapagos Islands or the Antarctic that have never felt the footprint of man? Well, you do not have to go to such extremes to feel like the last person on this planet. By simply taking a ferry out of Onancock, you can sail to Tangier Island, home to one of the most pristine and isolated beaches this side of the United States. About 12 miles off the mainland, a visit to Tangier Island is like escaping to a different world altogether. It is a world where the friendly locals are recognized for their distinct British dialects, cars don’t exist and the casual restaurants are known for the soft-shell blue crabs (get your fill at Fisherman’s Corner!).

5. DRIVE THROUGH THE TREE TUNNEL On my way to Savage Neck Dunes, a wrong turn took me to an unexpected treasure. Don’t you just love when that happens? While heading west on Smith’s Beach Road in Eastville, I stumbled upon a tree tunnel so pretty that it deserved driving through multiple times.

6. DO A MULTIDAY KAYAK TRIP For a chance to experience excitement and tranquility (I know, that’s contradictory) take a multiday kayak trip with Burnham Guides. Design a tour that will take you through the local marsh salts, barrier islands and National Wildlife Refuge or Nature Conservancy. They also have packages that include hang gliding! Burnham Guides specializes in these multiday tours, and from firsthand experience, I can see why you’d need more than just one day. After kayaking for a few hours through the beautiful marsh, we were taken to Holly Bluff Guest House, where a catered dinner was waiting — fresh crab and oysters!

7. PADDLEBOARD THROUGH THE BACKYARDS OF ONANCOCK CREEK Onancock is a quaint colonial town with cute shops and delicious restaurants, but it’s best to explore it from the water. At the harbor you can easily rent a paddleboard from Southeast Expeditions and then launch just steps away. If you prefer, they can also take you on guided nature tours for the day. From the launching point, you can explore multiple creeks and even take a peek into the backyards of the historic waterfront homes.

8. RELAX ON A SANDBAR Do like the locals by spending the day relaxing on a sandbar. Along the delightfully picture-perfect Chesapeake Shore lay a few charming sandbars that want nothing else but for you to enjoy them with family and friends. Some of these sandbars appear with low tide, while others are always there. To get to one, you can simply rent a skiff or a kayak in Wachapreague and ask the good people there where you can find the best sandbar. INGREDIENTS THE WORD S’MORE IS BELIEVED to be derived from the phrase “some more.” Quite fitting, we think. While no one knows the exact origin of its gooey goodness, it’s been linked to a cookbook recipe titled “Graham Cracker Sandwich,” from a century ago. Its formal association appeared in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, a recipe book published in 1927. Regardless of its roots, s’mores are certainly here to stay — and we share some tasty alternatives to the classic campfire treat.

¼ cup chocolate chips 12 regular-sized marshmallows 2 sheets of crushed graham crackers INSTRUCTIONS Melt the chocolate chips in a saucepot on medium-high heat, stirring until melted. Dip the tops of each marshmallow in chocolate and sprinkle with graham cracker crumbs. Let chocolate harden and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS 3 chocolate bars (1.55 oz) 7 Tbsp butter, melted, divided 1¼ cup graham cracker crumbs ¾ cup chocolate chips, semi-sweet 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream 1 pie crust, refrigerated 2-3 graham cracker rectangles, broken into pieces 2 cups mini marshmallows Chocolate sauce, for drizzling

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. Unroll pie crust and lay flat on a 12-inch pizza pan, then poke with a fork. Spread 1 Tbsp melted butter onto pie crust, then cover with ¼ cup graham cracker crumbs. Bake pie crust for about 9 minutes, until its edges slightly start to brown.

When crust is baking, heat heavy whipping cream in a stove pot until it reaches a boil. Place chocolate chips in a bowl and pour cream over top. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and set aside for 5-7 minutes. While the chocolate sits, combine melted butter and graham crackers. Set aside. Whisk chocolate and cream until smooth. Allow chocolate ganache to sit for about 5 minutes, to slightly thicken. Pour ganache over the pie crust and spread into an even layer. Add graham cracker crumbs evenly on top of the ganache. Top with pieces of the chocolate bar, pieces of broken graham cracker and a layer of marshmallows. Bake at 350° for about 4-5 minutes, until marshmallows become puffy. Bake for 2-4 additional minutes and remove. All to cool for 5 minutes, top with chocolate sauce, if desired, and serve warm.

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. Line cupcake pans with 24 cupcake liners. Process the graham crackers in a food processor or crush them in a heavyduty Ziploc bag with a rolling pin until they are fine crumbs. In a small bowl, mix the graham cracker crumbs with the sugar and melted butter, until completely combined. Add 1 tablespoon of the graham cracker base mixture into each cupcake liner and press with the back of a spoon. Prepare the cupcake batter by sifting together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, mix the sugar and oil together on mediumhigh speed for 3 minutes until light. Add the sour cream and vanilla and mix well, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Add eggs, one by one, and beat well after each addition.

ASSEMBLY 2 chocolate bars, broken into pieces 1 bag marshmallows, large 8 graham crackers, broken into pieces

Add the dry ingredients alternately with the boiling water, mixing just until combined and scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each a little over halfway. Press one piece of broken-up chocolate bar down into the chocolate batter of each cupcake. Bake for 20-25 minutes, remove and allow and cool completely. When ready to frost, combine the butter and cream cheese in a large bowl and beat until smooth. Add powdered sugar, vanilla and graham cracker crumbs and mix to combine. Add the cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches a buttercream consistency. Transfer to a piping bag with a large tip and pipe onto the cooled cupcakes. Set oven to broil. Arrange 24 large marshmallows in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in the oven on the broiler setting until toasted to your liking. Top each cupcake with a toasted marshmallow and a square from a chocolate bar. Drizzle with chocolate for added sweetness.

or the Keller brothers, family was the cornerstone that motivated the design and construction of a dazzling custom-built home in West Ocean City that not only showcases the area’s natural beauty but the beauty of their families, as well. Originally from the DC area, the Kellers spent time in Ocean City during summers. It was there that the family, especially Phillip Keller and his younger brother Jay, developed their love of the ocean and saltwater fishing. The two brothers developed their business skills side by side, as well, eventually becoming partners in Keller Brothers, Incorporated, a commercial building contractor that was founded in 1960 by their father and uncle. But it was the decision to become charter-fishing-boat owners that was key in discovering this picturesque Martha’s Landing property. It is a spot that now has become an important focus for Phillip, his wife, Christy, and their children, and Jay and his girlfriend, Chrissy, as they begin their family.

ew Jersey residents Joe and Melissa Syage discovered Lewes seven years ago, during a weekend visit to see an old college friend of Joe’s who lived in the historic town. The couple instantly fell in love with its boutique shops, restaurants and charm — so much so that they purchased a home on West Cape Shores Drive just two months later. They happily resided there for four years, until they purchased another home in Lewes — this one just 50 feet away, which came with unobstructed views of the picturesque Delaware Bay. After settling in, Joe realized that nearly every house along the waterfront side of his street had hurricane shutters, except his. “We’ve had a lot of very windy days, especially during the winters,” Joe said. “Sometimes, it’s so windy here on the Bay, it feels like the windows are going to blow in. For some reason, the previous owner didn’t have them put in. In light of the recent hurricane forecasts and some of the storms we’ve had of late, we just felt that sooner or later we might have ‘the big one.’ So, we decided to have the shutters installed.”

A quick survey of the neighborhood produced a continuing theme: East Coast Shutters was the area’s trusted source for hurricane shutter selection, quality and installation. Joe then asked his go-to general contractor for an opinion on the matter. He, too, recommended the Selbyville-based company. East Coast Shutters manufactures top-quality rolling- and accordionstyle hurricane-and-storm-protection systems that guard homes and businesses from damage. Their custom-made rolling-shutter systems also provide security, energy conservation and noise buffering — and can be operated with the simple touch of a remote control. The Syages had the X4 remote-controlled hurricane roll-shutter system installed earlier this year. It would be tested sooner than they expected. When Hurricane Isaias barreled up the East Coast in the beginning of August, it was the earliest date on record for an I-named storm. While Joe and Melissa rode out Isaias in New Jersey, they were confident their Delaware home was protected. “When we were home in New Jersey and knew this storm was coming, we probably would have been a little bit nervous if we hadn’t had the hurricane shutters installed,” Melissa said. “But we felt very comfortable knowing we’d come back and everything would be okay — and sure enough, it was. The system certainly met our expectations and provides us with tremendous peace of mind.” cs

“This was a fun project to work on,” said Jason, who established Gateway Builders in 2004. “Todd had a vision for how he wanted the home to look and feel, and we executed to make that a reality for him and his children.” The residence, which features five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, took a little over a year to build. Its open floor plan allows a seamless transition from room to room, and its full complement of windows welcomes natural light while showcasing its pristine setting. The first-floor master suite features his-and-her bathrooms and walk-in closets, while Todd’s children each enjoy their own personally themed bedroom, private ensuite and sitting room on the second level. Other areas include a spacious family room, professionalgrade kitchen, guest quarters and finished garage, which all tastefully, and impressively, combine to help create a spectacular house that is truly enjoyed as a family home. Burbage is the CEO of Blue Water Development and Blue Water Hospitality, a joint real-estatedevelopment company based in West Ocean City that owns campgrounds, hotels and attraction venues in eight East Coast states, from Maine to Florida. Due to his busy corporate travel schedule, maintaining consistent communication about the day-to-day aspects of the project was a crucial component of the collaboration between homeowner and builder.

Intricate, handcrafted moldings, an abundance of boardand-batten and 12-inch baseboards throughout speak directly to the precision and skill of Gateway Builders’ woodworkers. One such furnishing, which Lambertson is particularly proud of, is the home’s custom dining table. Sourced from Costa Rica, Jason secured a large slab of native parota wood and shipped it to Maryland, where his team custom-milled a 12-person, live-edge farm table and seating bench. The home’s exterior finishes and functionality were also points of emphasis, according to Jason, who said it was a priority to utilize sustainable materials that achieved a high aesthetic standard while creating a custom outdoor living space that could be used year-round. “Exteriorly, many products, including the roof, siding and trim, look like authentic materials visually, but in fact, they are structural PVC products that will provide years of maintenance-free use. “My favorite element of the home has to be the outdoor kitchen area,” Jason continued. “With two different grills (one being an Argentinian parrilla), an outdoor fireplace, infrared heaters, automated porch screens and a completely hidden audio-video system — it is a great space for outdoor entertaining. We also incorporated a lot of mahogany and travertine throughout this space, to give it a custom, professional finish. The entire space maximizes the beautiful views of Ayres Creek, which provides the perfect backdrop for the entire home.” cs
