From the Editor ... After a record-breaking hot summer, the weather is becoming the refreshingly balmy autumn and soon a mild winter - a beautiful time of year to visit Bundaberg. The Campervan Motorhome Club of Australia has chosen Bundaberg as the location for this year’s RV Rally in October, attracting even more visitors to our popular region, saying they look forward to exploring the many attractions, and will no doubt spread the word that Bundy is the place to holiday, or live, as indeed more families are choosing – the lifestyle is second to none. We have some fabulous prizes, to give away to a lucky reader and a friend to enjoy later this year or early 2018 during Turtle Season – entry to some of our best attractions, accommodation, dinner, and tickets to see the turtles either laying, or hatching. An incredibly well presented zoo on the banks of the Burnett River coupled with riverside walkways and shady parks and gardens add to the magic Mother Nature has bestowed on our region. A highlight attraction are the glorious Botanic Gardens which is a sublime location boasting numerous walkways, incredible foliage and quaint areas including Chinese and Japanese gardens. Viewing the spectacle of a cane fire, watching harvesters in action and seeing locomotives hauling cane to the local mills is part and parcel of an agricultural industry that is the economic heartbeat of the region. **** The Port of Bundaberg is an expanding location set to be a major economic driver for the region with the $70 million Knauf plasterboard factory currently under construction. The port is the current location for the ex-HMAS Tobruk which is being prepared for scuttling as a dive wreck in the waters off Bundaberg and the vessel can be viewed dockside at the port. If you are lucky enough to visit during one of our many festivals you are in for an unequalled treat. July is a great month for festivals locally with Winterfeast and Bundy Flavours food fair kicking off the month by showcasing the sensational array of fresh fruit and vegetables produced right here in the salad bowl of Queensland. Bundy’s Only Hill – You must sample the incredible view from The Hummock on the way between Bargara and Bundaberg overlooking panoramic fields of sugar cane, all the way around to the ocean. Although only 96 metres above sea-level, The Hummock offers visitors beautiful views to get a good overview of the whole Bundaberg region. It was named The Sloping Hummock by Matthew Flinders as he sailed along the coast in 1799 with the road leading up to the lookout completed in 1931. The Mystery Craters – There are 35 craters in one location, over 25 million years old. This rock formation was found beneath a layer of silt and sand by a farmer in 1971. Theories include- a large meteorite, result of sea action, hot spring activity, sink holes from volcanic action, roof of subterranean lake. Find them at Lines Road, South Kolan between Bundy and Gin Gin. Walk through history Stroll leisurely around the CBD and notice these brilliant old buildings, some heritage-listed and been standing since long before Bundaberg was declared a city just over 100 years ago. The Old Cran Home – corner Bourbong and Hope Streets West Bundaberg, built 1894 for Robert Cran who established the Millaquin Sugar Mill. It has five bedrooms, ballroom, morning room, two lounge rooms, three bathrooms, formal dining, fireplaces, bay windows, chandeliers and ceiling roses, high ceilings, hoop pine floors, red cedar joinery and double terracotta chimney pots. Payne, Butler & Lang Solicitors office is Qunaba House on the corner of Targo and Quay Streets. Erected in 1887, it’s our oldest commercial building, originally the Queensland National Bank. The name was also used for the Qunaba Sugar Mill when it was initially operated by the bank at Mon Repos.
The Old Bundy Tavern is on the site of one of Bundaberg's earliest public houses - the Custom House Hotel. The allotment was originally sold at Bundy’s first auction in May 1870 for
£11. It was destroyed by fire in 1915 , rebuilt and renamed Hotel Bundaberg in 1918, then The Old Bundy Tavern in 1991. Post Office – the tower’s exterior has remained virtually unchanged since the opening in 1890. The ground floor features wonderful pillars and arches; upper floor is dominated by colonial verandas and cast-iron balustrades. Soldiers War Memorial – a 7ft 6ins World War 1 Digger on a polished red granite column is sculptured from marble with the stone laid in 1920 by General Birdwood. Sir Charles Brand, originally from Bundaberg unveiled it in July 1921. Former Commercial Banking Company of Sydney – corner Maryborough and Bourbong Streets is of colonial design built in 1891. Wide verandas are embellished with cast iron lace balustrades, shingled roof, louvred wooden window shutters and the small building at the back was a horse stable. Linden Medical Centre in Barolin Street was built in 1913 as the residence of Dr Egmont Schmidt whose father emigrated from Berlin. It was named for Lindenstrasse, an avenue of linden trees. A time capsule was placed in a wall during building and it’s been a medical practice since 1975. Burnett Dentral Clinic was built around 1911 by O J Gruter of German/Swiss descent. It has distinctive pressed metal walls (both inside and out) and adornments on the original façade are Dental Blocks, an example of ancient Greek architecture. Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Bundaberg’s first opened on this site in 1875 with the design an adaptation of a Roman temple. The Anglican Church was built in English Gothic style with pointed arches, 34 metre tower with stonewalls, lichgate and wayside cross in keeping with the English custom. School of Arts in Bourbong Street is the oldest public building still standing, built in 1888/89.

Bert’s English home Your entry ticket to the Hall of Aviation includes admission to the magnificently restored Hinkler House which he named Mon Repos after the beach where he practised flying. In 1983 Bert’s house was brought brick by brick from Southampton in England to stand proudly in the Botanic Gardens.
Step back in time Bundaberg Historical Museum will fascinate visitors with “how things used to be”. Beautifully maintained in the Botanic Gardens, this quaint haven of nostalgia has the famous Lucke Quads’ pram here, the
only one of its kind made in Australia. Also re-created is an old schoolroom, butcher shop, general store, bank office, hospital (with iron lung) milk cart with horse, even a jail. Now they’re stuffed! Birds who once flew around Queens Park, some over 100 years ago gaze at visitors along with photos of Bundy’s former mayors which adorn the walls. Open 10am to 4pm. Fairymead House Sugar Museum was a bicentennial gift from the Bundaberg Sugar Company and now overlooks the Botanic Gardens in its new role of sugar industry museum, housing photographs and memorabilia exploring the technology, development and history of milling. Australian Sugarcane Railway, affectionately known as The Little Train chuffs happily along its track through the Botanic Gardens, taking delighted children and the young at heart on a steam-powered journey. Childers RV Park RV travellers now have a new place to stay when they arrive in Childers with a 20-hour RV Park opened in March and expected to become very popular with the many grey nomads that visit the charming town. Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey said the opening was part of a plan to create RV friendly parks across the region. Campervan and Motorhomes Australia CEO Richard Barwick said he was pleased that the Childers business community had actively pursued introducing the RV Park and looked forward to developing its RV Friendly Towns program further throughout the Bundaberg region.
RV Club plans Bundaberg Rally Campervan Motor Home Club of Australia (CMCA) plan a Bundaberg Rally from October 8 to 16, the longer rally decided to allow more time to explore the region’s attractions including the Rum Distillery. Rally Manager, Paul Scully stated in The Wanderer Magazine, that the surrounding area offers many opportunities both before and after the rally. “Towns such as Childers and Gin Gin will welcome our members.” Other activities include disc bowls, seminars, craft, indoor and outdoor trade and food court. The rally site is situated opposite the airport. Mr Scully encouraged RV members to make the most of the first rally held in Queensland in four years, saying “Whether you spent winter in the far north or you’re coming from the south or west, you’ll receive a warm Queensland welcome in Bundaberg.”

Turtles coming back in November Mon Repos Beach just 15 minutes from Bundaberg’s city centre has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland and most significant loggerhead population in the South Pacific. During the day, entry to the conservation park is by the park access road or the boardwalk with visitors welcome to view the informative displays at the educational centre. There is no charge for daytime access. Rangers and volunteers do their utmost to ensure maximum comfort and minimum stress to the magnificent creatures, while allowing tourists to get up close and personal, to witness nature unfolding. Here’s the turtles’ own calendar of events
as they plan their annual return visit to Mon Repos Beach this year. November – nesting season starts with the first Saturday when nightly Turtle Tours begin. January – Hatching Season starts as the little guys begin to appear and

Last year had 30,222 visitors set foot on the sand to witness turtles nesting and hatching at Mon Repos Beach, with this year’s total expected to eclipse the record by more than 130 people.

Burnett Heads Heritage Trail

Historian Marge Kidd has put huge efforts into researching Burnett Heads, resulting in the Burnett Heads Heritage Trail beginning at Oaks Beach. It is held on the fourth Sunday of each month from 9am to 12 with the iconic Lighthouse also open for visitors. This lighthouse was erected at South Head in 1873 and operational for 99 years until replaced by a taller tower. (Just around the corner, the unique 1930s Heritage Listed St John The Divine Anglican Church is also open from 9am to 12 on Sundays with visitors welcome.) It was relocated to Lighthouse Park in 1972 for preservation and stands as a lasting icon of the district. The Heritage Trail brochure is available at the Lighthouse when open and guides visitors who wish to go on the Heritage Trail walk which wends from the Historic Lighthouse to the current operational lighthouse, through the former Pilot Station Reserve and along the foreshore.
Burnett Heads/Port of Bundaberg is the “Gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef” – a relaxed coastal village located not far from Mon Repos Conservation Park and 17kms from the centre of Bundaberg. Burnett Heads has a variety of caravan parks, marinas, pubs and clubs mixed with waterfront dining and boutique shopping outlets. This section of Coral Coast Pathways starts at the northern end of Innes Park Reserve, finishing at Coral Cove Resort & Golf Course. Low tide at Elliott Heads – the mouth of the Elliott River. These are the southern most of our local beaches at the mouth of the Elliott River, surrounded by sugar and smallcrops farms. Elliott Heads has a patrolled swimming beach, popular for kite surfing, jet skiing; the fishing is good either from shore or on the nearby reefs.

From May 19 to 21 at the SES Grounds at 1770 with the Art Show Opening Night May 17 in the Agnes Water Community Hall. See a re-enactment of the landing of Lieutenant James Cook and crew at Bustard Bay, on the Friday late afternoon on the Town of 1770 foreshore, repeated next day on the main stage at the SES Grounds. Saturday begins with a street parade and traditional owners of the Discovery Coast land, the Gooreng Gooreng people explain dreamtime stories through traditional dance with didgeridoos.
