Kia Ora to our friends in New Zealand. As in past years we hope this edition of Tourist Queensland gives you some new ideas of places to go, things to do and see and which destination in our beautiful State will be your next – or perhaps very first. This is where Australia really shines, with our balmy winter months and year-round beach weather in the tropical regions. Our Southern Downs Country and Sunshine Coast Hinterland, along with the Queensland Outback (it’s a Big Country out there) show just how diverse your holiday experiences can be. Lady Musgrave Island - well worth a visit. Of course you’ll want to visit the Great Barrier Reef, that so greatly impressed David Attenborough whose recent documentary was shown worldwide - read about our Reef on page 9. And you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you haven’t been to our capital Brisbane for a number of years – the river city has really come into its own lately. Will you be the lucky winner who’ll take a friend along for a three night stay at New Zealand’s Brinkley Resort to enjoy the fabulous Mt Hutt ski-fields? Details on how to enter are on page 33. On page 6 we tell you how you can win double passes to see Singin’ in the Rain -the splash hit musical which starts in Brisbane in September. My wife Jane and I had a great time on our visit to New Zealand in February. Read about our trip to the Hole in the Rock on page 8. More than a million Kiwis visit Australia each year with Queensland the most chosen destination,– why not be one of them?

Relax beside a wood fire in Stanthorpe with a Granite Belt wine.
We’re neighbours and love it when you come to visit to explore our wonderland of of adventures, where you can • get lost in a rainforest, then unwind on a beach in a tropical paradise • go in, on, and under the sea of the one and only Great Barrier Reef • lose yourself under the starry skies of the Outback – there always seems to be more of them out there • sail through the breeze on a yacht in The Whitsundays • soak up the sun while you surf a leg break on the Gold or Sunshine Coasts • indulge yourself at world-class award-winning restaurants and some of the best live theatre in the world right here in our vibrant capital, Brisbane. Queensland is a giant, living breathing postcard waiting for the rest of the world to discover, and more and more are doing just that. Locals in each region love sharing their secrets, the wildlife pose for your photos and you can dine like a movie star one night – and recover in a tiny country pub the next day if you like. Our cities are thriving with cosmopolitan energy and a strongly defined sense of place. You’ll never forget Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island just off the coast of beautiful Hervey Bay (our whale-watching capital). See nature’s wonders up close – turtle nesting, whale-watching, koalas and crocs – our wildlife abounds. Mon Repos Beach near Bundaberg is the largest turtle rookery in the southern hemisphere – with Turtle Season from November to early March –a brilliant experience. You’ll love the pristine beaches of the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, luxurious Whitsunday Islands and Heritage-Listed Daintree Rainforest in the Tropical North; and taste the superior wines in Southern Queensland Country and the Granite Belt – where they have “all four seasons”. One of the world’s seven natural marvels, the Great Barrier Reef is waiting for you to uncover its magic – under it, above it, on it. The Outback –it’s a big country out there! From rollicking stockmen to desert sand dunes and even the odd dinosaur – heritage-rich Matilda Country of the central west, Mining Country in the north west. Visit the Qantas Museum in Longreach and The Stockmans Hall Of Fame. Where else but Queensland? Come on over!
Perfect time to show you Queensland Tourism Queensland’s CEO, Leanne Coddington said the recently added Qantas service from Christchurch to Brisbane was enticing even more Kiwi travellers to experience the best address this winter. “This is the perfect time to showcase the State’s diverse tourism experiences to New Zealanders who make up the biggest number of visitors to Queensland and Australia,” she said. Ms Coddington said the current phase of TEQ’s New Zealand winter campaign, themed Beach Escapes, draws upon a range of favourite Queensland experiences hand4

picked by Kiwi travellers. “Beach escapes are prominent drivers for New Zealand holidaymakers, especially during winter with the added appeal of Queensland’s warmer tropical climate”. The New Zealand Winter Campaign was produced in partnership with House of Travel, NZME (New Zealand Media & Entertainment), Gold Coast Tourism and Brisbane Marketing. Ms Coddington said TEQ had also partnered with Air New Zealand to run a separate digital and TV consumer campaign, including an online Wow-o-Meter, which
showcased the exciting and relaxing experiences on offer throughout Queensland. “The Wow-o-Meter was a highly engaging online resource of Queensland experiences, garnering over 800,000 page views over a month.” “It used heart rates as a visual representation of how exhilarating or peaceful each Queensland activity was, with a key focus on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Tropical North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast.” coastlinenews.com.au

Make your own Outback Story
Forget everything you think you know about Outback Queensland. There are many more ways to write your own outback story than you can imagine. Will your story be a road trip, cruising the highways between popular tourist towns and hidden gems? Of an epic romance, reclining in a comfortable rail cabin with front row seats to a million stars? Choose your own adventure, then let the spectacular scenery, incredible history and friendly locals fill your story with memories. Your adventure can start with a short flight and comfortable
hotel. Or it could be about sleeping out under a clear night sky. It can be the thrill of sitting ringside at a rodeo or a sunset kiss on the edge of a desert. It can be walking with wide-eyed children where dinosaurs once walked, or simply seeing Queensland through the eyes of an “outback mate” over a cold beer. With flights, coaches, group tours and rail holidays to choose from, there are many ways to enjoy an outback adventure your way. Go on, get out there!

Scottish visitors’ first time in NZ - by Sherry Barnes.
Coastline’s Managing Editor, Michael McRae and wife Jane met up with friends from Edinburgh (Jane’s hometown) for a closer look at Auckland and The Bay of Islands. “Jane and I love New Zealand and have visited numerous times, often as part of a cruise – we’ve seen Rotorua, Dunedin and Christchurch on the picturesque stunning South Island and we have been to the very top of the country, Cape Reinga” said Michael. “All areas offer something different but I haven’t been to Queenstown which I’m particularly keen to see as I’ve heard it’s quite amazing.” “This way Captain!”... (Michael McRae with ship). On this visit to Auckland, they were intrigued to watch the majestic Queen Victoria edge closer and closer to the wharf. “It was such an impressive sight I couldn’t resist waving her in,” he said. “We took a coach trip around Waiheke Island, and met an interesting character, Boris the bus-driver who hailed from Germany and Boris the bus driver. now happily calls New Zealand home.”

“Pony club members were horse-racing on the beach while we were there – it was terrific.”
Pony club members racing on Waiheke island. The Devonport Naval Museum was of particular interest to Jane and Michael, whose son Robert is a Sub-Lieutenant in the Australian Navy. Piercy Island in the Bay of Islands was named by Captain Cook and has an 18 metre hole created by centuries of wind and waves and if the water is calm and the tide is right jet boats will go right through the “Hole in the Rock”. The Bay of Islands The Bay of Islands has more than 140 subtropical islands by the country's North Island. It’s known for its undeveloped beaches, big-game fishing and Maori cultural artifacts. It's also home to the 19th-century whaling port of Russell, whose waterfront promenade is lined with remnants from its days as the country’s first colonial capital. Jane has an avid interest in historical museums and thoroughly enjoyed exploring Russell Museum in the Bay Of Islands. Formerly known as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, it features a working model of The Endeavour plus memorabilia from American author, Zane Grey who helped establish the Bay Of Islands in the late 1920s. At the turn of the 19th century, Russell was a shore station for whalers and becoming a lawless town known as “Hell –hole of the Pacific”. Today the peaceful town thrives on tourism, fishing, oyster farming and cottage industries. It’s a small world after all While relaxing in a coffee shop, Michael realised the décor seemed vaguely familiar and asked the owner “Was this once the Hotel Whangarei?” Yes, it was the same venue he’d visited about 15 years ago, then run by an old friend from Michael’s hometown of Bundaberg in Queensland Barry Trimmer. Making the most of their first experience of New Zealand, their friends from Scotland, Inez and Grant Macrae also continued onto the South Island and agreed with Michael that tourism is handled extremely well across the ditch. “From the operators, guides, greeters and volunteers, they’ve certainly got their act together when it comes to tourism – very well done!” coastlinenews.com.au

The Great Barrier Reef
Great Barrier Reef receives star treatment Queensland’s living treasure received the star treatment at a special London pre-screening of Sir David Attenborough’s latest documentary series – Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough. Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Kate Jones, said the Great Barrier Reef was nature’s greatest gift to Australia and this series would educate and inspire travellers to visit the Reef. The star studded screening, hosted by the Australian High Commission and Tourism Australia, put the reef on the international stage as guests walked a special sand carpet at Australia House in London. “This incredible documentary supported by Tourism Australia marks the return of the world famous naturalist to the Great Barrier Reef nearly 60 years after his first visit,” Minister Jones said. “It is the place that inspired David Attenborough to say: ‘the most exciting natural history experience of my life was the first time I dived on a coral reef’. At the screening David Attenborough talked about his first trip to the Great Barrier Reef and said North Queensland was his favourite place in the world. “North Queensland is a wonderful, wonderful place – it’s got everything. It’s got mountains, it’s got tropical rainforests, it’s got The Barrier Reef. It’s got wonderful creatures that occur nowhere else. It’s a great place,” he said.
Tourism Queensland CEO, Leanne Coddington applauded the documentary as a ground breaking tribute to its’ wonder. “This celebrates the Reef in an authentic and compelling way to an international audience,” Ms Coddington said. “Working in partnership with Tourism Australia, we want to inspire global travellers to experience the best address on earth and to share those experiences with family and friends.” Sir David Attenborough spent three weeks on the Reef as part of the filming schedule, which took in Ribbon Reef and Osprey Reef and Lady Elliot, Magnetic, Orpheus, Lizard and Heron Islands. The three-part series– ‘Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough’ was broadcast across the world, including the United Kingdom and Australia.
Turtles coming back in November The 2015/16 season saw a 13% increase in visitor numbers to a record 30,227. Turtle numbers were 387 loggerheads, 7 flatbacks, and one green. Here’s their own calendar of events as they plan their annual return visit to Mon Repos Beach this year. November – nesting season starts with the first Saturday when nightly Turtle Tours begin. Bookings are essential by contacting the Information Centre 41 53 8888, www.bundabergregion.org/ destinations/natural-encounters/turtles December – nesting season reaches its peak with tours running except for December 24, 25, 31.
January – Hatching Season starts as the little guys begin to appear and scurry to the ocean with only one in 1000 surviving to come back to Mon Repos to breed. Even though the first babies are hatching, other mums are still laying their eggs in January. February – Hatching is in full swing. The tiny guys can be disoriented by bright lights with Bundy running the “Cut the Glow to Help Turtles Go” campaign so they head in the right direction, towards the sea. Late March – Turtle Time comes to a close.

The
A
DEPARTURE GATE with Mike O'Connor
It wasn’t quite a Jules Verne-like Around the World in 80 Days but we did manage four countries across southern Africa in 17 days by plane, train, automobile and boat. The first challenge is to survive the chaos of Johannesburg airport’s immigration checkpoint where new laws require children under 18 to carry birth certificates as well as passports. Apparently, no one has been told about this and we queue for three hours. I have to physically restrain my wife from stealing a vacant wheelchair in frustration and wheeling herself through the fasttrack handicapped lane. The next morning we fly to Victoria Falls where there are no computers at the immigration desk. Visas are handwritten using triple sheets of carbon paper and initialed and stamped in turn by three officials while the money is counted by a fourth. This takes two hours. We stay at the Victoria Falls Safari Club overlooking a waterhole and plains that stretch forever.
As dusk falls elephants, impala and kudu come down to drink and we watch and toast the sunset from the deck of our suite. We’re in Africa. We’ve made it! We do a self-guided falls tour and the Zambezi River thunders and roars as it cascades into the gorge below. It’s an awesome sight and one that convinces us to take a 12 minute helicopter flight. Cost is $150 and worth it. We cross the bridge over the Zambezi to Zambia where there’s a bar-café. From there you watch the bungee jumpers leaping into the gorge below. I ask a girl who had just jumped if she’d had second thoughts. She said her nerve failed her at the last moment but when she tried to go back, the attendants pushed her off the platform. So that’s how they do it! From Victoria Falls, we travel by car to Camp Kuzuma in the Chobe region of Botswana. The accommodation is in tents decorated in faux Victoriana. We all but freeze during the 6am game drives but are rewarded with African sunrises and there are giraffes, elephants, ostrich, antelopes of all species and on our last morning, at last, a pride of lions. 10

From Kuzuma we travel by car to Kasane on the Chobe River, crossing into Namibia and being taken by speedboat to a houseboat where we spend the next two nights. Crocodiles, elephants, buffalo and more worryingly, hippos are everywhere. We also close within five metres of a leopard walking along the riverbank, the body of a baboon it had just killed visible in the fork of a nearby tree. We travel back to Kasane and fly to Cape Town for three nights, staying in an apartment at DeWaterkant, a $5 cab ride from the Victoria and Albert waterfront bar and restaurant precinct. We make the best of a crystal blue sky the next morning and take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. The views are a knockout. We’re with a guide who then takes us on a day trip down to the Cape of Good Hope, returning up the west coast road that hugs the coast. It’s a brilliant day. We have some memorable meals at the V& A and rejoice in the reasonable prices – pre-dinner drinks, two courses and a decent bottle of red for $120. A driver collects us the next morning and takes us through the wine country. We overnight at Franschhoek Country House about 2km from the town. The next day he takes us back to Cape Town and we overnight at the Taj Hotel in a room which looks out to Table Mountain. In the morning we board the ultra-exclusive Blue Train for the 30 hour journey to Pretoria. Our compartment has it’s own bathroom complete with bath. In the afternoon my wife sips champagne as she luxuriates in a bubble bath and watches the countryside roll by at a steady 80kmh. It’s an indulgent, expensive and a once-in-a lifetime experience which rolls through the semi-arid desert country of the Great Karoo while you enjoy all-inclusive hospitality. We arrive in Pretoria and spend the night at Castello di Monte, a sprawling, Tuscan-style villa in the ultra-exclusive Waterkloof district in the hills outside Pretoria. The next afternoon it’s an 80 minute drive to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo airport and home after 17 days, four countries - five if you count a few hours in Zambia - and the merest taste of the allure of southern Africa.
Mike’s Travel Deal Bench International has a Splendours of Southern Africa, 20 night itinerary that includes Victoria Falls, Cape Winelands, Cape Town and a Chobe National Park safari. Call 1300-AFRICA (237 422) or visit www.benchinternational.com.au

Rainbow Beach – Bribie Island
Rainbow Beach activity all year round.
Rainbow Beach and its coloured sands in the cliffs in the background.
For lovers of adventure and nature, Rainbow Beach is a hive of activity all year round. Located in the southern area of the Fraser Coast, Rainbow Beach features coloured sands, fishing, boating, surfing, camping and many other activities which can be enjoyed by families and backpackers alike. Rainbow Beach, is a major entry point to the 41,000 hectare Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy National Park, which offers one of the great four-wheel drive excursions or great walks in Queensland. A short drive north from Rainbow is Inskip Point where there’s a ferry to take you and your car across to Fraser Island. .
Beautiful Bribie Island
Remember those carefree holidays as a child playing on the beach in the soft white sand and having locally caught fish and chips for lunch – that is still what Bribie has to offer plus so much more. Also, Bribie Island was completely unaffected by the recent Queensland flood disaster and tourism operators are ready to welcome you and your families to enjoy a wonderful Bribie Island experience. Being only one of two Queensland islands connected to the mainland by bridge, Bribie Island is accessible to all and only 45 minutes from Brisbane airport. Protected by Environmental, National and Marine Parks, 86% of Bribie Island will remain unchanged, ensuring the natural beauty will remain for future generations to enjoy. Bribie Island is home to an amazing array of wildlife – dolphin, dugong and turtle cruise the calm waters of the Pumicestone Passage with the majestic Glass House Mountains as
the backdrop. Over 300 species of birds visit the island each year, roosting in trees along the foreshore and feasting along the sand flats. Kangaroos and Emu may join you for a game of golf and the occasional dingo may be seen along the National Park beaches. Today, Bribie Island has changed from the sleepy fishing island that many Queenslanders remember coming to as child. There are three shopping centres, coffee shops, great restaurants, modern contemporary 4.5 star accommodation, world class golfing and still the best fish and chip shops serving delicious locally caught fish and seafood. You can still camp within the National Park along the surf beach (in designated areas) or walk through protected heathlands. Please contact Queensland Parks and Wildlife for a permit to access the National Park by 4WD vehicle and or camp along the foreshore.

Seven wonders of the Sunshine Coast 1. Aussie World, Palmwoods
Aussie World is a fun family theme park without the crowds. You’ll have a minimal wait time and the staff treat you like you’re one of the family. Entry price covers unlimited rides – there are no upside down roller coasters, or thrilling rides, but for the younger crowds, it offers vintage family fun! With old favourites like the Wild Mouse, the Ferris wheel, and the dodgem cars, parents will feel as carefree and young as their kids again! Don’t forget to check out the Illusionsarium, a place of infinite dimensions and possibilities – it’s psychedelic baby!
2. Australia Zoo, Beerwah
One of the best zoos in Australia is located at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast. Founded by the late, and much loved animal conservationist Steve Irwin and his family. The Australia Zoo offers a fantastic day out with the family where you can feed and pat kangaroos, visit the African savannah and see a wide range of Australian animals. Its famous Wildlife Warrior bird and croc show is held in the Crocoseum every day at 12pm. Don’t forget to visit the animal hospital to learn about all the great work they do See Bindi Irwin at Australia Zoo. in protecting our wildlife.

3. Sea Life, Mooloolaba
Time to explore the Underwater World at Seal Life Mooloolaba, home to thousands of animals, including sharks, seals, turtles, stingrays, otters, sawfish, and tropical fish. The highlight of a trip to Seal Life is an encounter with Seals! You can either watch the twice daily seal show or pay extra have a photo taken with a seal. For a more in-depth encounter, you can their fur and shake flippers and go behind the scenes area where they live and where all their fishy food is prepared. My favourite was to spend 20 minutes swimming with them in their pool. They are so playful, inquisitive and cute. It was a definite highlight of my visit to the Sunshine Coast.
4. Sunrise SUP Boarding, Caloundra
Yes! It does mean waking up early, but it will be worth it. Golden Beach Hire rent SUP boards and Kayaks from the quiet Golden Beach. Watch the sun rise over Bribie Island while paddling on the calm waters of the Pumicestone Passage. Free instruction is included with your hire, and if you can’t make sunrise, there’s always a couple of hours later. Stand Up paddle boarding is something everyone in the family can do and it’s such a fun, and gentle bonding experience.
5. Kings Beach and Tidal Pool
Kings Beach in Caloundra has recently been included in the Top 10 family-friendly beaches in Queensland. You can choose to either roll around in the waves under the watchful eye of the lifeguards patrolling daily or take the relaxing option in the free tidal saltwater pools. With a 25-metre sea-water lap pool, children’s swimming pool and wading area with disabled access it’s popular for all ages and has a stunning view overlooking the horizon.
6. Gardeners Falls, Maleny
If you get tired of beach life, head up to the Sunshine Coast hinterland to a hidden waterhole within the forest. It’s popular spot to cool down, so not so hidden. For the brave ones, there are several ropes to swing off into the water below. There are also a few cascading waterfalls which make the perfect setting for a family picnic.
7. Bellingham Maze, Tanawha
Located in the heart of Mooloolaba’s shopping & eating precinct. Large 1, 2 & 3 bedroom FSC units all with fantastic ocean views. “Bring Your Golf Clubs”
Who doesn’t love racing around a maze with your kids? It’s one of our favourite activities to do as a family and the Bellingham Maze in Tanawaha didn’t disappoint. The star-shaped hedge maze made from lilly-pillies is the main event. Along the way you can search for gnomes and coloured letters on poles to help solve some riddles. Once you find your way to the tower and back out again, check out the other smaller mazes, like the Tyre Maze, the Ropes Maze and our favourite the timber Scrabble Maze. Find the jumbled letters down the dead ends and then solve the riddle!

Hervey Bay & Fraser Island
Whale Encounters (July to November)
Hervey Bay is known as the Whale Watching Capital and if you’re in the region during the whale season it’s a once in a lifetime experience we promise you. Growing to up to 16 metres in length and weighing up to 40 tonnes, a single whale can be equivalent to eleven elephants or 600 people. Whales can live to at least 48 years, but it is likely to be higher and probably closer to 100 years! Calves weigh one tonne at birth and feed on 600 litres of mother’s milk per day. Whales on the Fraser Coast are unbelievably friendly and just as curious about you – they love coming close to your whale watching vessel and showing off their antics. To find out more about Whale Watching on the Fraser Coast www.visitfrasercoast.com/whales Do It For The Whales The Whale Festival Parade and Concert is on August 20 – it moves along the esplanade heading towards Seafront Oval which hosts a free concert for all to enjoy. Paddle Out for Whales on August 21 celebrates whale conservation; paddleboards and kayaks are common but creativity is encouraged. It highlights the important message that Hervey Bay and Fraser Coast does not support whaling in any form and will stand actively against it. Join us!
Fraser Island – more sand than the Sahara Desert
Fraser Island has the absolute best that one island can offer – cool ancient rainforests to walk through, over 100 freshwater lakes to swim in, huge sand blows to climb, cliffs of stunning coloured sands and an amazing 120km beach highway complete with a visit to the Maheno Shipwreck. Did you know? Fraser’s complex sand mass extends 500 metres below sea level and it’s estimated the combined mass above and below the island is more that in the Sahara Desert. Lying just south of the Great Barrier Reef and off the coast from Hervey Bay, Fraser is the world’s largest sand island stretching for 123kms. It’s the only place on earth where you can stand dwarfed by ancient rainforests which defy the laws of nature to grow to soaring heights out of nothing more than sand. Fraser has been built up by over 800,000 years of tidal action – the world’s largest and oldest dune building sequence. Fraser Island Beach Houses are individual fully self-contained 2 and 3 bedroom houses situated on the stunning beach frontage on breathtaking Fraser Island.

Bowen’s Beaches
A top spot for a round of golf. This picture taken by Ben Southall. Story below on how Ben won the best job in the world.
Ben has the ‘Best Job in the World’ In January 2009, Tourism Queensland launched a global search to find a Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. A six month contract offering a salary of AUD$150,000, rent-free luxury island accommodation and the opportunity to discover and report back to a world-wide audience what the region had to offer. The search for applicants received extensive media and consumer attention resulting in 34,684 potential candidates applying from over 200 countries. In May 2009 the final 16 were flown to the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef for the final interview. Following the rigorous selection process, Ben Southall was appointed as Island Caretaker, commencing his role from 1st July 2009.
Bowen is one of the many charming towns on the Whitsunday Coast, with eight award winning, palm fringed beaches, beautiful bays and a warm tropical climate. Situated in the northern region of the Whitsundays on the shores of Edgecumbe Bay, it is a picturesque seaside town that offers a beachcomber’s paradise. The Front Beach foreshore in Bowen has recently been redeveloped with fun family activities in mind. With some of the best fringing reefs of the Queensland coast lying just a few metres offshore, the area attracts snorkellers and divers keen to explore the colourful coral gardens. When heading north from Airlie Beach and Proserpine to Bowen, keep an eye out for the Big Mango, on the Bruce Highway just before you enter the town of Bowen. The Mango marks the Bowen Information Centre, a knowledgeable, friendly place to book all your Bowen accommodation and activities and an excellent source of information if you are planning to continue further north on your journey.

Mission Beach –
A beautiful beachside town The natural mid-way point between Cairns and Townsville, Mission Beach is all secluded beaches, soft adventure and juicy, juicy mangoes. • Dive the Beaver Cay Marine Sanctuary, kayak to nearby Dunk Island and set up camp overnight or fly along the wet sand of Mission Beach in a blo-kart. • Do barefoot luxury right in one of seven exclusive villas on Bedarra Island or at a beachfront resort or holiday house.
On air, land and sea • If you’re up for the challenge of big game fishing for marlin, tuna and barracuda, head to Clump Point jetty and board a fishing charter. • Throw yourself from a plane skydiving or down white-water rapids on the Tully River. Hike or mountain bike the Misty Mountains trails once used by the Jirrbal and Mamu people. Keep watch for the elusive Southern Cassowary.
Reef Goddess by Name and Nature Say goodbye to day-long cruises to the reef, crowded boats and floating pontoons. Mission Beach Dive now operates day trips, dive charters, snorkel safaris and learn-to-dive classes from their Mission Beach base, the closest patch of dry-land to the outer Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. At just one hour out and one hour back, marine lovers will spend more time on the reef than they do getting there, leaving plenty of time to suit and fin up at two dive locations on the all-day tours. It's not all swimming; between the dives, enjoy a Captain's BBQ lunch with fresh prawns and bar service from the deck of the 65 foot MV Goddess Westcoaster. www.missionbeachdive.com
Great fun! Blowcarting at Mission Beach.

resorts along its picturesque esplanade where ancient melaleucas define the relaxing atmosphere. The sheer variety of dining experiences at Palm Cove means your palate can take a trip around the world, discover tropical produce at its best or reminisce with fish and chips by the sea. Accommodation options are just as varied whether you prefer the luxury of a resort, the convenience of an apartment or want to pitch your tent at the caravan park right on the beach. Palm Cove is a 30 minute drive north of Cairns.
The Great Barrier Reef – whales nursery area The warm waters off this part of the East Coast are the destination for the journeying humpback and minke whales. The Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area is their nursery area, the end of their 2,500 kilometre journey from the cold Southern Ocean to their calving grounds. Not surprisingly, the season is shorter here – between July and August – but the creatures do less moving around. Tours from Port Douglas and Cairns to the reef present your first opportunity to see the giant humpback and dwarf minke newborns. Considering the creatures are not in such a hurry, it might also be your best chance to see the famous white humpback, Migaloo, who has made the trip north since 1991.
Sealink Magnetic Island Race Week Magnetic Island – September 1 to 6 Magnificent Magnetic Island is the attraction for five glorious days of racing off Townsville. 2016 marks the 9th birthday of this event, which offers first-class racing on the crystal clear waters off Cleveland Bay. Billed as six days of four key events staged in one amazing location, there’s plenty to do both on the water and off. Special events include the Ladies Long Lunch, live music performances, the Picnic Bay Beach Fair and the Townsville Airport Magnetic Island Treasure Quest. There’s also crew parties, sponsors and skipper nights, and the racing of course. More information at www.sealinkqld.com.au coastlinenews.com.au

Getting around the region is easy with options including shuttle bus system, walking, hiring a bicycle, guided tours, boat cruises and chauffeured luxury vehicles. There’s also hire cars, bus tours and even helicopters for charter. Port Douglas and Daintree has an ideal climate year round with average temperatures in May to October of 25 – 29C and 29-33C in November to April. During summer and annual monsoons arrive to nourish the rainforest and present it at its best. A swimming enclosure operates at Four Mile Beach during the summer months so swimming at the Great Barrier Reef can be enjoyed year round. Freshwater swimming holes in places like Mossman Gorge and the Daintree are particularly popular in summer.
Feel the pace slow as you revitalise with lazy days – swim at beautiful Four Mile Beach, wander down the main street for boutique shopping with a tropical twist, dine with the birds at a wildlife park or dive into the Great Barrier Reef.
