Health system at bottom of league table
■ PAUL MUTTER paul@coastrider.net
A new report produced by the Federation of Associations for the Defence of Public Health (FADSP) has once again slammed the Valencia region for the standard of its health service. In summary the association found that the difference between the best regions and the worst regions is growing, ‘putting into danger the

necessary cohesion and equality between regions’. The report measures a number of variables to gain a picture of the level of health provision in each of the regions. These include the health spend per citizen, the number of beds available, the number of doctors and nurses per thousand inhabitants, the length of waiting lists and patient satisfaction. The economic crisis has affected the provision of health services as well as other social services in most regions but some have been more severely
affected than others. The top three regions for health services as measured in the survey are Navarra with 82 points out of 98, Aragon with 75 points, and the Basque country with 73. Moving down to the other end of the table the bottom three regions are Murcia with 53 points, the Canaries with 47 points and our own Valencian Community with a mere 46 points. The report writers found that the public’s opinion of health service provision generally has been reducing particularly over the last two years. Opposition political parties were quick to comment on the report’s findings, particularly those in the regions judged to be worst. In Murcia the regional head of the UPYD, Fuensanto Máximo, blamed the regional government for Murcia appearing as one of the worst Continued on page 8

CaixaBank to buy out Barclays in Spain Barclays Bank's operations in Spain have been bought out by La Caixa for the sum of 800 million euros. Personal banking, asset management and corporate banking will be taken over by CaixaBank, which will acquire 550,000 of Barclays' customers, 270 branches and 2,400 employees. Barclays Bank, S.A.U. will continue to have a presence in Spain, albeit a much smaller one, and will focus on its investment banking and Barclaycard lines of business only. As at June this year, Barclays in Spain had 18.4 billion euros in loans and mortgages held by customers, with 9.9 billion in deposit accounts and 4.9 billion euros' worth of assets under management – a total business portfolio of 33.2 billion euros. CaixaBank chairman Isidre Fainé says the purchase operation will 'bring a highly-qualified and professional team' to the company from Barclays – blue-chip employees 'focused on offering excellent-quality service' to their customers. The buy-out is subject to getting the green light from the relevant authorities and regulatory bodies, but is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
Commemorative tree stolen ■ PAUL MUTTER
paul@coastrider.net
In the ground behind Casa Ventura in San Luis, in an area made available for residents to plant trees, Maureen Smith and her husband had done just that. It was a tree in memory of their grandson Keiran Walsh who tragically passed away on New Year’s Day this year. The commemorative tree had been planted some three months ago after permission had been granted. The ground and tree were carefully and meticulously tended and Maureen had handcrafted and painted a plaque in Keiran’s memory and placed it in front of the tree in a carefully marked out area. Last week on Wednesday, September 4th it was a special day for the family. It was Keiran’s birthday. It was supposed to have been a day of quiet reflection for his grandparents as they went to spend time at the memorial they had erected to him. However it was not to be for when they arrived the sight that greeted them must have made their blood run cold. Someone or a group of people had uprooted the tree, simply ripped it out of the ground and made off with it. They looked around the area in case the tree had simply been dumped nearby but it seemed
that whoever had taken it, had taken it to place in their own garden. Maureen and her husband were understandably extremely shocked and heartbroken that something such as

Latest poll shows Podemos can ■ PAUL MUTTER paul@coastrider.net
The latest opinion poll conducted by Sigma Dos published in El Mundo last week demonstrated the staggering rise of the new Spanish political party ‘Podemos’ in the short time it has been in existence. Put together very much at the last minute this new party, which has its roots in the ‘Indignados’ movement, managed to pick up 7.98 per cent of the vote which equated to 5 seats in the European Parliamentary elections which took place in May earlier this year. This latest opinion poll measures the voting intentions of the Spanish population as we head towards the next general election probably late next year. If the election were to be held this week the poll indicates that Podemos would capture 21.2 per cent of the vote and be the third most important political force in Spain. What is more they would only be 1.1 per cent behind the PSOE. Out front would be the current ruling party the PP but only with 30.1 per cent of the vote, nowhere near a majority. The poll results have to be a disappointment for the government but also a disappointment for the socialist PSOE who have yet to gain any benefits from the election of their new
leader of the party, Pedro Sanchez. The results for Podemos are unprecedented for a new party and appear to indicate a deep dissatisfaction with the current political system in Spain. This is taken together with the unpopularity of Mariano Rajoy’s government’s spending cuts during the economic crisis in an attempt to reduce the country’s deficit. Whilst there seem to be some faint signs of economic recovery unemployment still remains significantly and unacceptably high. In addition the string of corruption cases affecting many of those in top and influential positions in the country and the increasing gap between the rich and the poor has led to significant disillusion with the political and democratic model in the country. The current political class is seen as part of the problem and not part of the solution. In the same poll 92.8 per cent said they did not believe the country had come out of the economic crisis. Perhaps more important politically 68.2 per cent did not believe that the measures and policies adopted by the current government had been effective in combating the effects of recession. The municipal elections in May 2015 will be the next test for Podemos and indeed all the political parties and should give a stronger feel for the will of the people moving towards the general election.
Jihadist arrests increase in Spain The number of Jihadists arrested in Spain has gone up by 36 percent in the last 18 months and the Interior Ministry has said 44 have been arrested since 2013. Between March and August this year, the Police and the Guardia Civil have detained 24 people, most of them belonging to recruitment cells. There are three cases when an activist has returned to Spain after supporting Jihadists, and they represent the main concern in western Governments. The arrests so far this year have taken place in Ceuta, Melilla, Málaga, Almería, Madrid and Ávila. The last case on Spanish territory saw two arrested, one of them underage who were detained when about to cross the border into Morocco, and who planned to travel to Syria or Iraq. Also last month, the Moroccan authorities, in collaboration with the Spanish, dismantled a recruiting cell
which was sending Jihadists to the Islamic State. Nine people were arrested and they had been recruiting in the Moroccan towns of Castillejos, Tétouan, and Fez in the centre of the country. Recently the Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, met with a delegation from the United States Senate, led by the vice-president of the Intelligence Committee, Saxby Chambliss. The minister expressed his satisfaction for the excellent collaboration with the United States services responsible for the fight against terrorism in general, and in the fight against ETA in particular where the CIA has shown collaboration. He said that it was fundamental for Spain and the United States to continue to exchange information on terrorist and Jihadist threats which have the capacity to operate in Europe and the United States, and had frontier controls are indispensible to combat the scourge.

BITE SIZE NEWS: Almost 1,000 turn out for meeting of local associations Almost one thousand people turned out in the Parque de Doña Sinforosa for the fifth get together of local associations. The gathering was attended by the Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón and the Councillor for Citizen Participation Agustina Esteve along with other representatives from the Town Hall. There are two principal reasons for holding this event. The first is to strengthen ties between the various local associations for their mutual benefit and the people they serve. The second was to raise funds, through the selling of food and drink from a bar at the gathering, for another local association ‘Alimentos Solidarios’, the group that provides meals for the needy in the town. Above all the event is a social occasion and there was music and dancing well after midnight.
Seven vacant sites in the indoor market in Torrevieja The Councillor for Commerce in Torrevieja Agustina Esteve announced that seven vacant sites are available in the Indoor municipal market ‘La Plasa’ and would be put out to public auction for a concessionary period of seven years. The Department of Commerce has prioritised the regeneration of the indoor market in order to preserve this facility for residents and visitors to the town. Councillor Esteve said that applications can now be made through the general register of the city (PROP) with the deadline for applications being September 15th. More information and details are available from the Department of Commerce.
Los Verdes political party want to know about third age residences in Los Balcones The spokesman for the Green Party in Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, has asked for information from the ruling party in the Town Hall regarding the status of the large development in Los Balcones. This was destined to become a third age residence but progress has been paralysed for the last few years with the site untended and overgrown. The spokesman claims that he understood that a licence was being applied for to operate the building. However he claimed that the development as it stands breaks several elements of the General Plan regulations for that region and has asked the Town Hall to ensure they check whether the development meets safety criteria and planning regulations.
New ‘mobile library’ scheme in Torrevieja The Councillor for Culture in Torrevieja Luis MarÍa Pizana announced last week a new project, allied to the ‘Lend Me your Eyes’ reading club project, to be called ‘Libro Viajero’ (travelling books). Whereas ‘Lend Me your Eyes’ is designed to help those who are no longer able to read, the new project is designed to help those who can read but for one reason or another are unable to get out. For example they may be in nursing homes, hospitals or

Work begins in October on new storm water drainage system in the Casagrande industrial estate One of the worst areas in the town for flooding when it rains heavily is the Casagrande industrial estate, particularly in the area of calle Delfinas Viudes and the section between Calle Josefa Rebollo Rodriguez and calle Estay. The Mayor of Torrevieja who is also chairman of the board of AGAMED announced a project worth €444,060 to improve the drainage in the area. The project is expected to take five months although the contractors are committed to completing it in a shorter time period. The work to be undertaken will also include improving pedestrian accessibility at the roundabout close to the Aquópolis water Park. AGAMED and the association of businesses on the Casagrande industrial Estate have agreed to meet during the project in order that the businesses can understand which areas will be affected and for how long so that they can plan accordingly. families struggling ■ PAUL MUTTER
paul@coastrider.net The latest report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), its ‘2014 Employment Outlook’ finds that wages have been falling in Spain on average 2 per cent per year. This, the organisation says, is leading to Spanish families struggling to make ends meet. However the flipside of the coin is that Spain’s productivity and competitive-ness has improved as labour costs reduce. The Eurozone area in general has seen reductions in annual wage rates. On average these have been 0 .1 per cent. This compares with a wage growth rate of 2.1 per cent before the economic crisis struck. The only country to have experienced a higher reduction in wage rates than Spain is Greece at 5 per cent. Stephano Scarpetta who is Director of Employment at the OECD went on to say that the increase in labour costs in Spain seen when the euro was introduced 12 years ago has been reduced considerably because of the crisis and the reduction in annual wage rates. He said though that wage freezes or cuts might lead to ‘serious repercussions on household income, exacerbating economic difficulties.’ He feels that further reductions in wages in
those countries suffering most in the crisis, and particularly in a situation of very low or zero inflation, will only lead to a very slight increase in jobs. They
would however increase the risk of poverty and do nothing for improving demand. The OECD was also critical of the balance of work contracts in Spain. In pre-crisis years almost 33 per cent of contracts were permanent. This has fallen to 24.5 per cent. The report says that ‘overreliance on temporary work is damaging to individuals and the economy’. It is a very mixed picture regarding Spanish performance in that the country will probably see some of the best reductions in the Eurozone for unemployment rates over this year and next but that will still mean that the unemployment rate would be close to 24 per cent at the end of 2015 while the average for the Eurozone as a whole is 11.6 per cent.
No eviction for those owing less than 30,000 euros says ombudsman The Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, has written to the Secretary of State for Social Security asking him to establish as law that nobody should lose their home for debts of less than €30,000. She wants to establish a system to protect people’s ‘basic assets’ such as their prime residence to avoid situations of unnecessary social vulnerability and homelessness. She believes that there should be greater flexibility over the opportunity to negotiate repayment terms for debts. A person’s main residence should as far as possible remain untouchable.
There is currently a rule that selfemployed people who owe Social Security money have two years grace from the date their home is embargoed to when it is actually auctioned off to pay the debt. The ombudsman argues this period of time is not enough and in most cases the money owed is considerably less than €30,000. It is then often the case that if the property is auctioned the amount realised is usually considerably less than the potential market value and money is also soaked up in various legal costs, fines and interest payments. This means
that the person concerned can then be left with nothing or in fact still owing money even for what started out as a relatively small level of debt The ombudsman also wants to see an extension of the two year moratorium on foreclosures put into place in November 2012 and due to run out in three months time. She has received a number of complaints in the last two years about this issue. The Minister for the Economy, Luis de Guindos, has indicated in an interview with Europa Press that this may happen. A new school year in Torrevieja The Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón was out and about last week with the Councillor for Education Rosario Martinez Chazarra to mark the start of the new school year. They visited the
secondary school number five ‘Torrevigia’ which has 720 students. Together with the school’s director Carlos Irles, they saw the new special education classroom which can cater
for 10 students with special educational needs allowing them to integrate with the rest of the school. Torrevigia is the first secondary school in Torrevieja to have this type of facility within the main school itself. The Mayor said that numbers in Torrevieja schools had stabilised in recent years and so far for the 2014/2015 school year a total of 9,247 students had so far been enrolled with 6364 in infant and primary school and 2910 secondary school. Final numbers will not be known until the deadline for registration passes on September 14th The Mayor also noted that the number of students per class on average at 25 for infant classes and 34 for primary school classes is well below the average for the Valencian community as a whole which is 35. Successful tourist season in Torrevieja this summer The occupancy rate for hotels and tourist apartments in the city was over 80 per cent in July and for August was on average around 85 per cent although at weekends and during the Assumption Puente from August 14th to August 17th many hotels and establishments recorded levels over 90 per cent. Another figure that is used to give an indication of the level of tourists and visitors in the town is water consumption which in July and August was 1.08 per cent above the level for the same period last year. Tourist information offices were busy too. The councillor for tourism Luis María Pizana released statistics for July and August this year which showed a total of 16,856 visitors had attended tourist information centres in the city with a total of 44,604 questions or requests for information. Just over half, 56 per cent were international tourists with 44 per cent being domestic visitors, a 27 per cent increase over figures for 2013 Particularly popular has been the information centre on the Playa del Cura which has remained open during both the morning and the afternoon. The largest number of international tourists seeking information was those from the United Kingdom followed closely by Scandinavian visitors who once again registered a significant increase as was the case last year. year 2015, will be the third consecutive year that the pair have paid for the development, design and production of such a calendar. The first two calendars raised a total of €4,000 for the association. Each month is illustrated by a photograph of the region. This year over 200 photographs were submitted for consideration. According to regional newspaper La Verdad The size of the number of entries and the nature of the subject matter caught the attention of a television programme on Spanish network TVE ‘Aqui la Terra’ and it’s presenter Jacob Petrus. Writing in that paper, local journalist Francisco Reyes said that Jacob Petrus spent several minutes talking not only about the calendar and its previous editions but also about the work of the Mastral Project which has now become known about by a much wider audience in the country. Proyecto Mastral has four weather stations situated across the city of Torrevieja providing a continuous stream of data to its website. Health system at bottom of league table Continued from page 1 three regions for the third year running. ‘This is certainly a very negative figure that clearly shows the poor management by regional government,’ he said. He went on to say the large differences between those at the top of the table and those at the bottom was a concern and justified his party’s view that health should be managed by central government which would be able to purchase using economies of scale and could ensure that the same amount of money was spent on every Spanish citizen. The Health Department in Valencia took a different position and attacked the report as being ‘subjective and malicious’. The report was criticised as, ‘having no official status’, using subjective indicators which gives a misleading interpretation of the true
situation. ‘The indicators selected for this report are outdated and inappropriate as indicators to help measure the quality of care from a modern health system,’ a spokesman said. ‘The quality of a hospital is not measured by the number of beds nor by the absolute number of nursing and medical professionals but by other indicators such as the length of stay or the level of professional expertise,’ the Department of Health stated. In this respect the average stay of a patient in a Valencian hospital is 5.79 days which is ‘the best according to data provided by the Ministry of Health’. Shorter stays in hospital are according to the Ministry of Health allied to having fewer medical complications contri-buting to greater continuity of care. All the data used by the association in putting together their report was derived from Ministry of Health
figures. The top five regions have occupied the top five places in the league table for the past five years changing position slightly during that period. The association spokesperson, Marciano Sánchez Bayle, said the generally there is a direct relationship between the quality of service and the amount of money allocated in the health budget by each region. The economic cuts are put down as the major reason for the general decline in service with the association estimating that there are some 53,000 less staff in the public health system today than there were several years ago. He went on to criticise the health reforms of 2012 as being ‘a dismal failure’ and added that there was the additional threat to the health system of privatisation which according to him ‘ represent an additional cost without improving the quality of care.
AECC opens first ever office on the Coast ■ MIREILLE TODDINGTON mireille@coastrider.net
Maria Wilson, President of the AECC Orihuela Costa, has opened the charities first ever office on the coast in its 60 year history. The centre, located downstairs at the Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre, will become a hub of support for cancer sufferers and their families. The opening was attended by local residents, politicians, business owners,
Maria and Pablo with the volunteers AECC volunteers and Maria’s fundraising colleagues The Pink ladies. The official ribbon was cut by Maria and Pablo Enrique Valens, Head of the AECC in the Alicante province. This was a huge moment for Maria, who has lobbied hard for the charity to open a local office, knowing that the majority of the money raised in the province is donated by expat residents of the coast. Maria said: “Now I can ensure that the local expat community gets the support it needs when battling against this terrible disease. We also have a wonderful relationship with the local Town Hall and so we can build on that and count on their support moving forward.” The office, which will be located in Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre, has
been generously donated to Maria for the AECC by PSI Consultants in Playa Flamenca and so there is no rent for the charity to pay. All of the office furniture and equipment has been donated by Spain Property Shop and Maria and the Pink Ladies have worked tirelessly to make the space appealing and comfortable, particularly Karen Williams and Sue Matthews. Maria said: “The Orihuela Costa AECC Centre will be for the benefit of patients and their families. I want it to be a place where those affected by cancer can meet
hearts of gold, they fundraise tirelessly and give us tremendous support. In addition to the office and all the fixtures and fittings we have people offering discounted air-conditioning and pest control services. Now all we need to find are some generous people to help us provide the kinds of activities that will make a difference to the day-to-day lives of those touched by cancer.” For the local community the Centre will register residents from Orihuela Costa and the surrounding area for
for coffee and to talk to people in a similar situation.” The centre will offer a range of activities and services. There will be Spanish lessons, computer courses, flower-arranging and pilates. There is a free physiotherapy service and the AECC psychologist is available by appointment. Maria is also asking for members of the local community to get involved by providing additional services free of charge such as: massage, manicures and pedicures, yoga and make-overs. This can be just an hour of someone’s time once a week, but would make a huge difference to the lives of those using the Centre.
cancer screening appointments and take any charitable donations. The office will be manned by volunteers Monday to Friday between 10am and 1pm. The office management team comprises: Miriam Garcia - Vice President, Sue Matthews - Treasurer, Karen Williams - Secretary and Ann McGiven - administration. From January to June 2014 Maria and the Pink Ladies raised an amazing 30,504.24 and this is exactly the reason why Maria wanted this community to have the support of its own AECC office, because the people here have done so much for the AECC for many years and she wants to ensure that if ever they need the AECC it is here for them in return.

Financial advice from AES International ... Mark Harrison
Unlock your pension early If you are 50 or over and have lived outside the UK for more than 5 complete tax years, you can take up to 30% of your pension as a tax-free lump sum before you retire. If you have lived outside of the UK for less than 5 years then you can take your pension at age 55. Retiring with unpaid debts can be scary, because it will be even harder to pay them off once you have stopped working. According to Prudential nearly one in five people who retire in 2013 will have debts averaging £31,000. However, many of these people have a UK pension fund. It is possible to release your pension early to clear those debts. You have to be careful or you could empty your pension fund leaving your nothing to retire on. Most people should leave their pension fund to grow until they are ready to stop working but you do have the option to take this pension early at age 50. For some people paying off their debt by using some of their pension fund may be good financial planning. However, you should also tread carefully. Saving for retirement is difficult enough and sometimes the best advice is to leave your pension fund intact until your retire. Also make sure that you deal with a reputable adviser. Some unscrupulous advisers have been marketing complex, unregulated schemes designed to encash 100% of an expat´s pension fund. This is known as pension liberation and is condemned by the HMRC and can lead to high tax penalties to the unfortunate expat. ‘Legroom war’rages as planes grow more cramped Airplane ‘legroom wars’ are prompting growing rage in international skies, with two recent seat battles sparking a heated debate about the knee-bumping practice of reclining. Amid the furor, one thing everyone seems to agree on is that space on passenger planes is getting scarcer and scarcer. The question of reclining etiquette “has been a topic of discussion for many years,” said Sarah Schlichter, editor in chief of IndependentTraveler.com. “But the current uproar seems to be a sign that people are simply not happy fliers anymore.” Within just a few days, two aircraft were re-routed because of passengers fighting over a seat recline. On a United Airlines flight between Newark, New Jersey and Denver, Colorado – which was detoured to Chicago – one passenger even used a ‘Knee Defender’ to hold his position. The gadget consists of two clips that attach to tray table arms to block the seat in front of them from leaning back. Sales of the gadget "in the past two and a half years have been increasing on a continuous angle," its inventor, Ira Goldman, told the press, without giving precise figures. "People are travelling more, on more crowded planes, the space is smaller and the airlines still provides seats that recline," added the six-foot-three (1.92meter) entrepreneur who says he flies 100,000 miles (150,000 kilometers) a year. For the past week, commentary, often
tongue-in-cheek, has abounded, denouncing the cramped seats and taking sides in the undeclared war between the too-tall versus the – generally inadvertent – strikes of the knee crushers in the next row. In The New York Times, Josh Barro defended the recliners. "I fly a lot. When I fly, I recline. I don't feel guilty about it," he wrote. The "Knee Defender" inventor, who created his gadget more than a decade
reducing space for economy class passengers in order to make more room for first and business class passengers, who pay far higher ticket prices. The norm for long flights has gone from around 18 inches (46 centimeters) in the 1970s and 1980s, briefly up to 18.5 inches before shrinking down to just 17 inches in recent years, the newspaper reported. In comparison, legroom on a typical US train is more like 20 inches. To stop the legroom battles, some low-cost carriers, like easyJet and Ryanair, have removed the reclining option on short flights. "Baggage restrictions and fees, the loss of meal services, tighter seating and more for-fee upgrades that reduce the basic experience, all contribute to more aggravation for fliers," said Schlichter.
SLOWLY DOES IT...
“People are travelling more, on more crowded planes, the space is smaller and the airlines still provides seats that recline” ago, however, is ready to move on. "I would be gratified if the airline industry would solve the problem that they have been ignoring for so many years," he said. In fact, a Wall Street Journal study in October 2013 found that airlines were
Etiquette experts say leaning back is every passenger's right – but beware about pushing too hard to exercise it. "You purchase that as part of your ticket price, and no other passenger has the right to prevent you from reclining your seat," said Anna Post, one of the directors of a famous school of etiquette, the Emily Post Institute. "We may be right, but trying to pursue being right may cause more trouble than it's worth," she said, advising passengers to lean back slowly "so you don't slam into someone." "Sometimes just a little bit is enough to be more comfortable."

Spanish police Spain is world accused of beating number one in organ Brit tourist to death transplants A 25 year old British tourist has died in Sant Antoní after an altercation with police following a dangerous stunt. Witnesses say the deceased had taken drugs which seemed to have affected his state of mind as he shouted and then jumped off the first floor balcony of his hotel. However, his death was not caused by the fall but from a heart attack as he was arrested. Luke Thomas Rhoden, a former rugby league player for Wigan Warriors, suffered a heart attack, according to witnesses, when the Guardia Civil and Local Police were trying to detain him. Social media reports say the police were ‘beating’ him. One witness said he was beaten to death by the police before the ambulance arrived. However a statement from the Guardia Civil denied that and said he suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance after being given a sedative. A witness said he was a very large man and was running about, very violently and shouting like an animal as he ran around a swimming pool with blood on his face. The incident happened just after 10.30pm last Wednesday night, at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in Sant Antoní, in Calle Cervantes. A spokesman from the 061 emergency services said their medical team had tried to revive him for 40 minutes, but finally they certified his death. The Guardia Civil said death was
caused by the drugs he had taken, and not from the fall, but an autopsy is still necessary. The hotel limited its statements to a ‘serious incident’ and ‘no comment’. The digital edition of the Daily Mail broke the news in Britain, and paid tribute to what they described as a Rugby star and entertaining man, he trained and played hard, always giving Meanwhile, in a separate incident, another British tourist, aged 32, is in intensive care at the Son Espases Hospital, after jumping from the fifth floor of the Mari Hostel in Sant Antoni. He was first taken to Can Misses, where he was operated on, and then a decision was made to take him to Son Espases in Mallorca.
Spain continues to be the world leader in organ transplants - for the 23rd year running. Ahead of the USA and the whole of the European Union, the country has 35.3 donors per million inhabitants, and carried out 4,279 of these delicate and often life-saving operations last year. Among those who have gone through this type of surgery, patient Juan Vicente del Álamo, from the northern region of La Rioja, is one of only two people in the world who has survived three heart transplants. Juan Vicente's book, Ace of hearts, has been published and is due for release in October and, in it, he hopes to raise awareness of the importance of placing one's name on the donor register to help give life to others after one's own death. According to the National Transplant Organisation, a total of 1,655 people donated their organs in 2013 including, in some cases, live donors. Whilst the EU has 19.5 donors per million inhabitants - a long way behind the USA's 25.8 - Spain is ahead of the field by a long way. In fact, 14 percent of all transplants in Europe are carried out in Spain, and 4 percent of all those in the world. World Health Organisation (WHO) sources say a 115,000 of these operations were conducted in 2013,
which is 10 percent of all those needed on the planet. Spain 'fitted' 2,552 new kidneys, of which 15 percent were from live donors, plus 1,093 liver transplants, 249 heart transplants, 285 using lungs, 92 with pancreas and eight new intestines. After live donations - involving kidneys, since one is sufficient for survival, and sections of liver implanted into patients so they can 'grow their own' - the most common are known as 'asystolic donations', where the original 'owner' of the organ has died from an irreversible shut-down of the heart and respiratory system. In Europe, a total of 59,541 people were waiting for a transplant as at 1st January this year, and 4,088 on the list died in 2013 due to organs not being available in time. But the growth in transplant numbers in the EU is very slow - a long way behind Latin America, which has seen a rise of 20 percent in donor figures, making this the largest rise on the planet. Donation levels have remained stable in the USA at around 25 to 26 donors per million inhabitants, and Canada and Australia saw an increase in donors of around 3 percent, putting the figures at 15.7 and 16.8 per million respectively.

Spain tops European life-expectancy report A report from the Ministry for Health reveals Spain has just just 3.1 beds for every 1,000 people, well below the European average of 5.2 on a list that is led by Germany with 8.2. However, despite the fewer beds, or perhaps the reason for it, is that Spain leads the life-expectancy list in Europe with 82.5 years, compared to the EU average 79.3. Looking more closely at Spanish longevity, women’s life-expectancy goes up to 85.5 years, while the men go down to 79.5 years, with the men beaten only by the Swiss, Italians and the Cypriots. Spain spends 9.4 percent of the
country’s GDP on health, just below the EU average of 9.6 percent. The Belgians, Germans and Austrians are the most satisfied with their health services, while between four and five percent of the Greeks, Bulgarians, Romanians, Polish and Slovaks consider the heath service on other countries is better than in there’s. Spain remains above the EU average in daily smokers with 24 percent with the average at 22.5 percent although the number in Spain has fallen by seven percent since the last report. Spaniards drink almost the same as the EU average at 10 litres per head, with
the EU average at 9.8 litres. The most drunken people in Europe are the Lithuanians, Czechs, and Austrians, with 12.9 to 12.1 litres, while the most abstentious are the Maltese, Swiss and Italians, with 7.6 to 6.1 litres With regard to obesity, 17 percent of the population is obese, the EU average is 16.6 percent. The United Kingdom has the biggest problem in Europe with 24.8 percent obesity, while Italy at 10 percent and Romania at 7 percent are the fittest. Mireille Toddington
Goodness gracious, great balls of fire Calls from across the country came in to local emergency services yesterday morning, reporting a mysterious sighting in the Sunday night sky. An unidentified fireball was seen soaring across the sky late Sunday night from several provinces in Spain. The phenomenon was visible to the naked eye for several seconds and changed colour constantly, leaving a long trail of smoke behind it before disintegrating and disappearing into the night air.
Residents and holidaymakers across at least half of Spain photographed and videoed what looked like a massive, multi-coloured meteorite. The ball of fire appeared to travel across the country from east to west and sightings were reported in the regions of Catalunya and Aragón in the north-east, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León in the centre, Valencia – our region - in the east, Andalucía in the south, and Extremadura in the west. According to the Spanish Meteorite Investigation Network, the fireball was
travelling at speeds ranging from 11 kilometres to 73 kilometres a second, and may have been a particle of the 20-metre asteroid which came very close to the Earth over the weekend. However, these fiery particles rarely cause a meteorite when they penetrate the Earth's atmosphere, with only about 10 of the 500 or so a year that are detected, actually impacting the planet. The Investigation Network has 25 comet detector stations which cover at least 95 percent of the Spanish territory.

Reduce smartphone stress with new app The power and usefulness of the Internet and the current generation of smartphones, PCs and tablets is that you can remain connected in most places, most of the time. However that in turn has its drawbacks. I’m sure most of us have seen people constantly checking their phones for the latest updates and notifications and may even be guilty of it ourselves. It is not difficult to become a slave to the technology which can lead to increased levels of stress, with people never feeling able to switch off in case they miss something important, particularly if it is connected to their work. If you fall into that category then help might be on its way in the shape of a new app currently only available for Android which has been developed by a team at the University of Southampton. Called ‘The Healthy Mind’ the app consists of nine tools all designed ‘to minimise stress and encourage calmness’. The project has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the UK which will be using the app to help them to work out the best way of using modern mobile
technologies whilst at the same time helping people to reduce their stress levels. Along with some sensible advice on anti-stress techniques to adopt the app will be monitoring various data in the background such as physical activity and the location of the user to decide what the best time is to send notifications so that they are actually received and
understood by the user without raising his or her stress levels. People can opt to take part in this initial study and will be put into one of three groups testing different scenario. Professor Lucy Yardley of the University is leading the research team and said in a recent press release, ‘most people who are stressed won’t be seeking any kind of help from a professional. Many however will have their phones with them the vast majority of the time and this is an untapped resource in terms of helping people with stress. We want to find out how best to utilise the technology that is at everybody’s fingertips to get the best results for the individual. We want to know when is the most appropriate time to send a notification so they are helpful rather than sending them and them being ignored.’ ‘The Healthy Mind’ app is free and available for users over 18 years of age who will be asked if they want to take part in the trial. The study will last for about five months. The app which is within the ‘My Life Guide Toolbox’ can be down-loaded from www.healthymindapp.org. Paul Mutter

The Euro
Your weekly currency update, sponsored by
WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The decision was not unanimous but on Thursday the European Central Bank's Governing Council voted to relax monetary policy further by cutting interest rates and buying asset-back securities (packages of mortgages and other loans). Ahead of the event there had been much debate about what action the ECB might or might not decide to take at this month's meeting. Rate cuts and ABS purchases were among the measures that investors had thought possible but few had expected the ECB to deliver both. There was therefore a good deal of surprise when the ECB revealed its plans. The euro took a knock, losing a cent on the day to sterling and one and a half cents to the US dollar. The Swiss franc was dragged lower at the same pace as the euro by dint of the Swiss National Bank's determination to defend a floor of SFr1.20 per €1. Over the last week and month the euro is the weakest-performing major currency. Much of the surprise related to the ECB's cuts to its benchmark interest rates. Three months ago, when it lowered its refinancing rate to 0.15% and its deposit rate to -0.1%, ECB President Mario Draghi said that "for all practical purposes" interest rates were as low as they could go. On Thursday, with those rates now down at 0.05% and -0.2%, he said they really, really, absolutely could not go any lower
from here. The jury is out as to whether the purchase of ABS by the European Central Bank qualifies as quantitative easing. Some say full-blooded QE must involve the purchase of sovereign bonds and Sig. Draghi, perhaps for political reasons, refused to attach the QE label to his scheme. But if it is not QE it is a close approximation: the ECB will be buying securities for its own account, using its own money. As for whether the action will be effective in getting inflation back to its 2% target, only time will tell. If it does work it will be because it has genuinely improved credit conditions, not because markets have been swayed by Sig. Draghi's bold words, as they were when he promised two years ago to "do whatever it takes" to preserve the euro. Back then, his words alone were enough to do the job. This time his language was far more muted, possibly because Germany had voted against the programme and he didn't want to rub their noses in it. In the aftermath of the ECB announcement, and once the dust had settled, the euro halted its decline and remained steady into Friday morning. Where it goes next will depend on the economic data, especially the inflation figures. But let's guess it won't be going up.

Moneycorp acquired by Bridgepoint in transaction totalling £212 million Specialist foreign exchange provider Moneycorp has been acquired by Bridgepoint in a transaction with an enterprise value of £212 million from funds advised by SOF Investments. Moneycorp is one of the largest specialist players in the market targeting customers through a multi-channel offering, including a fully integrated online payments and telephone platform serving both SME corporate and private customers. In 2013 it recorded gross income of £97.2m (2012: £65.2m) and handled over £10 billion of currency trades. In 2013 it also acquired Thomas Cook’s corporate foreign exchange business. The business has built a powerful origination engine through a combination of telephone based sales people, partnership referral network and a strong retail presence at strategic travel hubs such as Heathrow and Gatwick. It currently serves pre-dominantly UK based SMEs and UK high net worth individuals and operates a retail bureau de change business focussed on London and the South East with 10 stores and 61 airport locations. international payments and foreign exchange in the UK and now also have the opportunity to realise our broader ambitions and to grow internationally with Bridgepoint.” Bridgepoint partner Stephen Green commented: “The FX market for SMEs is changing and offers much to go for with banks providing poor value and service leading customers to shift to specialist providers. Moneycorp is an exciting opportunity to back a talented management team with a fast growing UK business and significant international development potential." Lindsey McMurray of SOF Investments added: "The manage-ment team has built upon the long history of strong service culture embedded within the organisation to introduce innovation in product development and delivery, underpinned by the highest standards of regulation and compliance to create an exciting platform for future growth." The UK international payments market is expected to grow by 11 % p.a. as customers continue to switch away from banks and awareness of and trust in specialist providers increases. Banks increasingly view the SME and private individual market as non-core as they focus on core lending products or FX and treasury for large corporates.

eople being targeted by cold callers who are falsely claiming to offer new, free Governmentbacked retirement guidance could end up putting their money into risky investments and losing their pension savings, the City regulator has warned. Consumers are being warned to beware of phone calls, emails, texts and online adverts offering them a “free pension review”. The regulator said it was hearing evidence that some callers were claiming to represent the Government after it announced plans in the recent Budget to offer impartial face-to-face guidance on the range of options people had available for their pension pots. The guidance has not yet been launched and it will coincide with plans from April 2015 to give people aged over 55 the freedom to take their pension pot however they see fit. The regulator said the reviews were designed to persuade you to move your money out of your existing personal or occupational pension into a self-invested personal pension (SIPP) or a small self-administered scheme (SSAS). Most of the companies making these offers were not authorised by the FCA, although the regulator said they also often falsely said they were acting on its behalf. It warned that people investing in this way were also likely to have a lack of safety nets if something went wrong, including no right to complain

The Bleeding Heart vine (Clerodendrum thomsoniae), also known as Bleeding Glory Bower or Bag Flower, is a beautiful, twining, tropical plant with showy red and white flowers. Flowers
It should not be confused with any members of the genus Dicentra, also commonly called “bleeding heart.” Bleeding Heart vine is a completely different plant. While the Dicentra members are mainly spring flowering plants native to North America and eastern Asia, the Bleeding heart vines are summer flowering and originates in the warm climates of West Africa.
DESCRIPTION Bleeding Heart is a sprawling vine-like shrub that can be trimmed to just about any desirable size. It produces tons of clusters of white heart-shaped flowers with a red, tear-like attachment at the base of the flower. Flowers are seen year round, but more during the warmer months of the year. The Bleeding Heart vine is covered with large, evergreen leaves and climbs rapidly. The plant's stems can get 12-15 ft (4-5 m) long, climbing without tendrils, suckers or root hairs, but rather by twining through and around its support. You should provide a structure for it to climb on or keep it trimmed as a shrub.
C U LT U R E This is a tropical plant that will take
some care to flourish. First thing to do is to choose a sheltered, sunny location to grow your Bleeding Heart vine - it needs heat and a lot of sunlight to reach its full potential. Best results occur with morning sun and afternoon shade. The soil will have to be high quality and have the ability to drain well. It should be loose and not packed. If planting in a pot, make sure the pot has holes on the bottom so that water can drain through. You don’t want water settling around the root, as this will cause root rot. When you have placed the plant in a container and covered the roots with soil you can add a bit of mulch around it, being careful not to let the mulch come into contact with the plant itself. After planting the Bleeding Heart vine make sure that you water the plant well. This is important until the plant is well established. Always use lukewarm water and not cold water, as a frigid water temperature may put your plant into shock. It is also important that you never let the soil dry out, which will kill the plant. Bleeding heart likes high humidity and a moist, but not soggy, soil. You will want to feed your plant about every two weeks while growing. Use a gentle liquid fertilizer that you can add to
the water. If you plant outdoors you can add slow release fertilizer to the soil. The Bleeding Heart vine will need to be pruned during the winter months for best growth during the warmer months. Prune it in mid-February just before new growth emerges. You’ll want to remove old, overcrowded shoots - particularly any that are too long for your taste. Plus, the flowers grow on new wood so don’t be afraid to cut the plant back severely. This plant is frost tender and may die back in winter. If plants are damaged by frost, burnt tips and leaves should be left on the plant until spring and then cut away to make way for vigorous new growth. The Bleeding Heart vine is a plant that produces some great flowers for cutting. You won’t have to feel guilty about cutting flowers from this vine, as it will actually help it to become healthier and produce more flowers. You’ll enjoy the heaviest flower crop from early spring through mid-summer and then it will slow a bit into the fall.

distinctive and beautiful flowers. It can be kept pruned into a shrub, or given support and allowed to scramble like a vine. It does not spread as much as some, and is thus a good choice for a restricted support like a doorway arch or container trellis, and not such a good candidate to cover a fence or an arbor. This plant is great for growing in containers, especially in hanging baskets. It also makes a fine houseplant anywhere, so if your climate is too cold, grow it indoors. In captivation - your living room, say, or your kitchen - it’s likely to stay under three feet. When properly sited and cared for, it will be full with lush foliage and branches that spill over the

edge of whatever container you choose.
PR O P O G AT I O N If you want to plant more vines you can use cuttings; these will root in about 2 weeks, but you will want to mist these cuttings on a frequent basis. Or you can collect seed and plant them in spring. Bleeding Heart vine is one of the most beautiful flowering vines there is and a great way to add beauty and colour to your garden or home. When your friends see it, they’ll want some cuttings to start their own... Marc Vijverberg

‘You Can’t Be Serious’ is a weekly tongue in cheek look at the world through Bernie Comaskey’s eyes. With kind permission of the Westmeath Examiner. bernie.comaskey@gmail.com
DON’T BLAME THE FARMERS IF YOUR KID FLUNKS IT... The Irish Independent ran a front page banner headline in its 20th August edition, informing its readers that, ‘Children of farmers are three times more likely to go to college.’ Whether or not this story warranted such a sensational front page news headline is questionable – but that is another story. Based on a report, the information delivered is 100% accurate. What followed next from the usual quarters was a spate of farmer-bashing; inferring that selective student grants and EU farm payments gave an advantage to these children. These children do have an advantage – and it has less to do with income or grants, and we’ll come back to that in a minute. The second highest group of children to progress to college are the offspring of the business and self employed parents. Neither is this any surprise to a thinking person. Both groups have one advantage in common. Please read on... I am not here to do a PR job for farmers or the self employed. Of course parents who earn good money are in a better position to assist their college-going children; but those who think it is just about money are hopelessly missing the point. There is no more diverse group than that which comes under the umbrella of ‘farmers’. It can be someone with ten acres of carrots or a man milking 300 cows. Some farmers make an awful lot of money – most earn less than the average industrial wage. A survey at the height of the boom showed that small to medium businesses in Ireland were ‘just doing OK’. Less are doing ‘OK’ right now. But their children are
still going to college – and there is a simple answer for anyone who wants to know. By the way, the reason the farmer gets paid subsidies is to keep food prices down for all of us. At the turn of the 20th century, it took 90% of a workers wage to feed his family. What is it today? 20% maybe? Farming is the only business in the world where the producer has no say over how much he gets paid for his produce. Farming might be so very mechanised these days, but the farmer still works hard and puts in incredibly long hours. There is no choice: You cannot farm by the clock or by the calendar. Not alone this, but all the family are farmers – they all have to work at it and earn their keep: Same thing with shop-keepers, publicans, B&B’s, and all family business enterprises. Now back to the real question being asked – and the answer is not the one implied by provocative headlines. The simple answer is that kids who grow up in a hard work environment have acquired the work ethic and that is what propels them forward in education and in the workplace. They know nothing less than the benefits of hard work and endeavour. The sad fact here is that most of the children of people drawing the dole will never aspire to any ambition higher than drawing the dole. The Irish Independent article dealt with higher education; but lower education comes first – and lower education comes from the parents It is not about the size of Daddy’s and Mammy’s bank balance. I have talked to so many students from such backgrounds, working every hour that God sends in a
summer job, so that they can finance themselves through college. Only a couple of weeks ago, her boss told me of a lovely young girl doing physiotherapy in college and working in the pub for the summer, and she asked for all the working hours possible, because ‘she couldn’t ask her parents for any money in the coming year’. Her father is involved in business. I read a piece in a magazine recently ... something to the effect of, ‘The ten things you can do for your child that are more important than college’. Here are a few examples given: ‘Get him a job in McDonalds’, ‘Let them see you work’, ask them ‘how would you solve your own problem’, ‘Relate reward to achievement’, ‘Delay gratification’, ‘Praise improvement’. When we look around us we see certain families of go-getters. The children branch off in various directions and all are successful – because they have inherited the work gene. So you see, a child going to college has little to do with ploughing the land. By and large, children copy the standards set by their parents and those close to them. It doesn’t always follow, but it is more likely that the children of parents with the work ethic will roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes.
Ambition never gets anywhere until it forms a partnership with work.

WELCOME TO PISA with Vivalia Travel
Pisa, located in western Tuscany, is known throughout the world for its famous Leaning Tower, but there is so much more to Pisa than just this striking landmark. his ecclesiastical city began its life as a seaside settlement around 3,000 years ago and was first laid out in the mid-eleventh century. “Pisa, The Leaning tower of Pisa comes in our mind. Well that is the beauty of this Italian city. Although Pisa is always been a famous tourist destination due to The Leaning tower, but Pisa city is also famous for many other tourist attractions as well. On the other side their amazing local culture which reflects Italian touch also attracts people all around the world to visit this beautiful city. Well when we talk about history, Pisa is one of the most important historic Italian city which is most visited by the travelers around the world. Talking about culture and artistic aspects of Pisa, surely its architecture of beautiful ancient buildings, museums, fine art galleries etc comes in our mind. Today, Pisa is crammed full of wonderful, historical monuments and buildings dating back many hundreds of years, and much of the city has managed to retain its medieval appearance. Pisa is also known for its excellent university, which was established in 1343 and has become one of Italy's top schools. In the north-west of Pisa there is an immense green lawn on which four impressive buildings stand, in gleaming white marble. These imposing structures are the enormous, breathtaking Duomo (cathedral) - built almost 1,000 years ago, the cathedral's bell tower - better known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the circular Battistero (Baptistery) the largest of its kind in the whole of Italy, and the Camposanto - also known as the Holy Field, without doubt one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. This area is referred to as the Campo dei Miracoli or the Piazza dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) and these remarkable Tuscan buildings combine Moorish, Gothic and Romanesque architectural features. The Piazza dei Miracoli is where you will find Pisa's main tourist information, while additional tourism outlets are located on the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, and at the nearby Galileo Galilei Airport. Surrounding the Pisa Camposanto on two sides is the city wall, while two major museums are located to the south. These are the Museo dell'Opera - containing a
T
significant collection of sculptures, paintings and other works relating to the ecclesiastical buildings on the Piazza del Duomo; and the Museo delle Sinopie, with many original sketches in plaster from Camposanto frescoes that were damaged by fire in 1944. The Leaning Tower of Pisa isn't the only edifice that is no longer standing upright in the city. Unsteady, sandy soil beneath the Field of Miracles has resulted in other problems that initially are not quite so obvious. The baptistery lurches noticeably towards the north and also, when viewed at certain angles, the Duomo cathedral is far from straight. There are even a couple of small bell towers (campaniles) in Pisa that have also shifted and these have been nicknamed 'The Other Leaning Towers! Synonymous with Pisa and Italy, the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre Pendente) is known throughout the world. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is actually the bell tower of the Pisa cathedral and when visiting the tower, it is hard to understand how it has remained standing after more than 700 years. There are other medieval towers in Italy that have failed to keep upright, but it is the Leaning Tower of Pisa that has captured the world's imagination. The tower has always tilted and nobody ever put his or her name to it, so who was to blame for the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a mystery. The underlying cause of the tremendous leaning is due to a sand foundation to one side of the base of this tall tower. For over 800 years, engineers in Pisa have been trying to overcome the lean, in the fear that the Leaning Tower of Pisa might collapse completely Whilst it is fair to say that the leaning Tower of Pisa does rather steal the limelight from many of the city's tourist attractions, do allow time to properly explore all that this enchanting city has to offer. First on your itinerary should be a visit to the Baptistery (Battistero), which ranks amongst Italy's finest and is quite simply enormous.
Tourists will find that further enticing attractions within Pisa include both the Holy Field (Camposanto) and the Knights' Square (Piazza dei Cavalieri), which is overflowing with medieval character. The Piazza dei Cavalieri is rather dominated by the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, which was originally the headquarters of the Tuscan Knights of St. Stephen and boasts an elaborately decorated facade. The historic city centre of Pisa is concentrated on the north bank of the River Arno and is still surrounded by 12th-century walls. The 'high street' is the long and curving Via Santa Maria, and connects the Campo dei Miracoli with the Lungarno (Embankment). Palaces and mansions still line this street and retain their splendid facades, which date back to the 16th century. The social centre of Pisa is the Piazza Garibaldi, which is located on the north side of the Ponte di Mezzo (Middle Bridge). Also of note is the elegant Borgo Stretto, which is filled with interesting shops and cafĂŠs. If you have time for excursions outside of Pisa, then consider trips to the neighbouring Tuscan cities of Florence and Lucca. Although Pisa is not the city for those people who just love to have fun during their vacations, it is more towards the art and the culture of ancient Italian communities. So it is a perfect destination for those travelers who loves to explore different cultures, ancient arts, paintings, and other aspects.

By Paul Mutter It is still very hot and humid as I write this week’s column and not only is it a good idea to keep out of the kitchen it is also a good idea to keep well hydrated and eat light meals with plenty of fruit. To that end this week’s recipe includes fish for protein and fruit in the form of a salsa. The original inspiration for the recipe comes from Simply Recipes although I have amended the ingredients slightly and added the option to use fresh pineapple instead of mango if you cannot find a mango. Alternatively if you can’t find either then tinned pineapple will do equally as well. The recipe also features avocados, that delicious creamy fleshed fruit. If you have not tackled them before, preparing mangoes, avocados and in fact pineapples can be a tricky business especially as they are all a little slippy
to handle. So for the uninitiated here are ways of preparing all three. Take the avocado and slice in half lengthways cutting round and not through the stone. Twist the two halves in opposite directions and provided the avocado is ripe enough it will split leaving the stone in one half. To remove the stone there are two basic methods. The first is to cut that half in half again breaking one of the quarters away from the stone which then should separate reasonably easily. This is not always as easy as it sounds and so the second method is to (with very great care) stab the stone with the point of a very sharp knife. Gently twisting on the knife should then help to release the stone. The outer skin should peel away from the flesh fairly readily which can then be cut into slices or chunks as desired. If making
guacamole or a similar mixture the avocado can simply be spooned out of the skin. The mango is an unusual fruit in that it has a large flat seed in the middle. To peel a mango take a sharp knife and slice carefully down one side of the stone to release the flesh. Do the same with the other side. Then in each of the two ‘halves’ cut a criss-cross pattern but do not cut through the outer skin. Then taking each half in turn, press on the outer skin to turn the half ‘inside out’. The individual chunks of mango can then be easily separated from the skin. Any flesh that is left on the stone can be cut away from it and chopped up. Fresh pineapples are best dealt with by cutting the top off and the bottom to give a flat surface. Then cut carefully down each side in sections to remove the outer skin. Cut vertically into quarters through the middle of the hard core and then on each quarter slice vertically down to remove the core. Now each quarter can be sliced into chunks as appropriate.

BAKED SALMON WITH AVOCADO OR PINEAPPLE & MANGO SALSA Ingredients (for four people) 4 salmon fillets or steaks Salt Ground black pepper (Freshly) 2 medium sized mangos (ripe but firm not soft and squashy) or fresh pineapple 2 avocados (just ripe) 1 large purple onion or salad onion 1 large red pepper 1 red chilli ideally or 1 teaspoon mango chutney with chilli or a little chilli sauce 2 limes Olive oil
Method
Preheat oven to 180ºC. While the oven is preheating prepare the salsa. Prepare the mango as per the instructions in the note above cutting the flesh into small bite -sized cubes about 8 mm in size. Similarly if using pineapple then prepare that as per the notes above cutting the chunks into similarly sized pieces as for the mango. Make sure that none of the harder outside pieces of skin are still attached to the pineapple. Place the fruit in a mediumsized bowl. Take the limes and squeeze out the juice into the
bowl of fruit. Take the onion and chop finely also adding this to the bowl of fruit and lime juice. Mix everything together. Prepare and add the avocado, again in small similarly sized pieces to the fruit above. Mix well especially coating the avocado with lime juice which will help to stop the flesh darkening. If you have access to a fresh red chilli then top and tail and deseed chopping into very tiny pieces and mix into the salsa otherwise a little bit of mango chilli chutney or chilli sauce can be used but take care it should not be too hot. Alternatively you can forget about the chilli altogether. Taste and add a little salt or
perhaps sugar if necessary. Cover with cling film and put to one side Now cook the fish. Line a roasting pan with aluminium foil. Spread some olive oil on top of the foil. Coat the salmon fillets with olive oil and lay, skin side down in the case of fillets, on the foil lined roasting pan. Sprinkle with salt. Cover with foil and place in the oven to bake for 20 minutes or so until the fish is cooked. Serve the salmon fillets with a generous portion of avocado mango (or pineapple) salsa. Goes very well with plain boiled basmati rice. Paul Mutter

The award-winning Are your child’s eyes prepared to Restaurante Casa Pili go back to school? in Los Montesinos Business Profile Casa Pili situated on the main road in Los Montesinos is run by husband and wife team Pili and José. Chef Pili handles the kitchen side of the business while José works front of house. The restaurant has twice won the ‘Best Spanish restaurant’ category of the CoastRider Culinary Awards which bears testament to the quality of the restaurant, the service and the food. The restaurant itself is very clean, light and airy inside with an attractive long bar. There is also a well-appointed outside seating area. Casa Pili offers an extremely flexible set of options as far as the menu is concerned. In the middle of the day there is an extremely economic three course menu del dia for €11 and later in the day there is a menu de la noche, again three courses for €14. In addition there is a ‘Special Menu’ giving more choice and a slightly different selection of dishes available for €20 which includes half a bottle of wine. Above all Casa Pili is a Spanish family restaurant serving great food in a relaxing and friendly environment. For those who prefer to eat á la carte there is a very wide and extensive menu offering lots of choice Spanish dishes. If you’re not sure simply ask José and he will be able to advise on suitable dishes. All the food is cooked from the freshest and best quality ingredients available on that day. That is part of the reason why the food is so flavoursome and tasty; the other reason of course is the skill of Pili the chef herself. There are house specialities available on several of the menus. One to look out for is fish cooked in a pastry case and for a starter, in fact it is usually big enough to have as a main dish, go for the revuelto, a mixture of different types of mushrooms and chopped asparagus bound together with scrambled eggs
and prawns. It really is a great way to start the meal. There are excellent steaks and plenty of fish for those who perhaps want a lighter dish. In addition Casa Pili has some true specialities including Cocido, roast kid (Cabrito) and a range of Paellas. These have to be booked and ordered in advance. On a recent visit to Casa Pili my wife and I decided to sample the €20 special menu. To begin the meal she chose the creamed foie gras which came with caramelised onions, figs and melba toasts. I couldn’t resist the revuelto which came between two puff pastry slices. Both were excellent starters. For the main course my wife chose Hake in pastry whilst I went for the pork medallions with Roquefort sauce; once again both excellent dishes. I don’t think I mentioned this before but Pili spent many years as a pastry chef before opening the restaurant with husband José and this shows in the desserts. I had a piece of Almond tart, moist and sumptuous while my wife chose nata con nueces which is whipped cream, walnuts and honey. Casa Pili also has an excellent selection of wines which José can advise you on if you need some assistance. Casa Pili has become a popular venue with expats and the restaurant celebrates its 18th anniversary appropriately on September 18th and both Pili and José want to thank their many customers for their continued support. There is no hesitation in recommending Casa Pili. If you have not already done so pay Casa Pili a visit you won’t be disappointed. You can make a reservation by telephoning 966 721 819. Paul Mutter

During the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision. Yet, one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Once children go to school, good eyesight is crucial to keep up with their studies. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books. Specsavers Opticas suggest that a child should have their first eye examination at around three years old, as the earlier things are detected, the easier they are to rectify without delaying the child’s development. This September they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back to school routine so they can be prepared if their child does need glasses. The process of taking an eye test for a child is simple. Firstly, the optometrist will ask the parent or guardian about any relevant family history and any problems their child may be experiencing. Then several child-friendly tests will be undertaken, using special charts and
other materials to help children indicate what they can see and how clearly. They will test the vision of each eye and will check whether they work properly together. They will also measure the child’s focusing ability and the health of the child’s eyes before discussing the results with the parents. If a child does need glasses, there are some great ranges which tick all the boxes of fashion and durability. Kids that wear glasses can now be the envy of all their
friends with fun frames in bright colours sporting their favourite character or toy. Popular ranges include Disney, Hello Kitty, Gruffalo, Star Wars™, Simpsons and LEGO and Specsavers have their own kids and teen ranges. Until the end of November 2014 Specsavers Opticas are offering free eye tests for children and adults. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

Chinese supermarkets – too much of a good thing? Over recent months The CoastRider has received several letters and emails from local residents regarding the ever increasing number of Chinese supermarkets that are springingup almost overnight. There are now more than ten of these open on the Orihuela Costa and the question everyone asks is, how many of these stores can one community need? The concerns residents have seem to be numerous; from the quality of the goods, to the speedy construction that heralds yet another store. One local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Having endured hours of building work, bulldozers, piling machines and the like, all day every day from 8am till at least 8pm, not to mention the amount
of dust and dirt. Now [the Chinese supermarket] has finally opened it looks like we will be fighting a constant battle with their rubbish that they do not take away attracting rats, stray cats etc, and considering that this is also a food store, it makes me wonder just how suitable they are to be handling food. “Anyone who says that we need another Chinese store must be mad, they all sell the same [stuff and so] bring nothing to the community…and we definitely do not need one on every street corner.” Another common concern residents have centres on the tax relief benefits that are afforded to Chinese business owners; a three-year hiatus, which therefore encourages business ownership.
The CoastRider passed on the issues raised with us to the Town Hall in Playa Flamenca. In response to these concerns the Councillor of the Coast Martina Scheurer said: “This is an ongoing issue which we try to handle in a positive way. There is a plethora of these shops on the coast, but there is no municipal law which would allow us not to give a licence to one more, if the required conditions are fulfilled. The shops are monitored and regulated in the same way as any other in terms of health and safety conditions. The tax agreement was set up by the national government as part of a bilateral agreement, I don't know the full details of it but it does make business ownership advantageous.”

Business Profile As a long term resident in Spain I have had my fair share of Hospital treatment, ranging from a replacement hip to Stroke treatment and I have nothing but praise for the Medical treatment that I have received. Regrettably I cannot give the same praise to the after care. Having said that, let me emphasise that this is not peculiar to Spain as friends and relations in the UK tell the same tale because, when money is tight, it is easier to cut the after care facilities than surgery. So when I heard about the new Rehabilitation programme being run at Casaverde Almoradi, I could not help but think that it would have been better for me had it been available some years ago. Let me tell you about it. The programme is aimed to help people who have just been through Surgery or who have had an accident or injury requiring treatment and convalescence to get back to the best physical and mental condition that they can. It is intensive, with daily treatment sessions in an atmosphere designed to get the best out of the treatment. Casaverde has always been proud of the standard of their specialist treatment but for the patient to get the best out of it they have made this programme in house. In this way the
rate of progress is constantly monitored by the Specialist and with the vast range of equipment Casaverde have installed, changes are implemented immediately. Even with the best treatment it is less effective if the patient has to travel for treatment and has the distractions that come with being at home. So to the patient is accommodated in a spacious, light, single room (with a second bed for a partner, if needed), they will have a bathroom designed and fitted for their needs, an American style kitchen with microwave, their bed is fully adjustable to suit their requirements and comfort and, of course, there is a multi channel TV. The patient will be monitored and their welfare looked after 24/7 by the Nursing staff, while a Psychologist will be making sure that their mental recovery after hospitalisation is catered for equally by giving advice and support. Although the object of the programme is to promote recovery, it is recognised that a patient will want to be at home with their family and therefore there is a Management Service at Casaverde to help with advice as to when the patient can end the ‘In house’ stage of treatment and arrange for

English Speaking Volunteers Needed English conversation classes for Spanish students will begin on Tuesday 16 September. The classes have been held successfully for the past two years and the students are looking forward to another year. The current students are obviously very keen to continue with these classes and there are new students that wish to attend. Organisers are, therefore, looking for more English speaking volunteers.
Crystal East told the CoastRider, “We don’t teach the students to speak English, it is purely conversation. They have an intermediate level of English already and should be able to converse. It isn’t necessary for volunteers to be able speak Spanish and it is an excellent opportunity to meet Spanish people and to learn about Spanish life and customs.” The hours of the classes are: Tuesday and Thursday 10-12

‘Home’ treatment be it Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Psychological assistance. Where needed there is also a home ‘Catering Service’ and ‘Home Care’ when the patient’s partner finds caring difficult. This Management Service will also provide advice and guidance on any necessary aids which will allow the patient to finish the programme in their own home. This will clearly depend on the type of treatment being given for it may include equipment only available in the Care Home, in which case it may be possible for the patient to make periodic visits to the Care Home. Each patient is a separate case – there is no generalisation.
Would that there was such a programme available to me after my Hospitalisation!! Jim McEleny.
Wednesday and Thursday 5 - 6 pm The venue is: CIAJ centre, Paseo Juan Aparicio, 5, Torrevieja. Tel: 96 571 4072. It is located on the sea front, very near to Burger King, with ample parking nearby. If you would like to join in, please come along to one of the classes. Call Crystal on 644136711 or email her at crystaleast16@yahoo.co.uk if you need more details.

FRIENDS AFTER BEREAVEMENT Benijofar is known for being a small village which has as its base an extremely caring sense of community, and so it comes as no surprise that as a continuing part of this a new group in being developed. To be known as F.A.B. (Friends After Bereavement) the group is aimed at bereaved people who are looking to take the first steps towards new friendships. As well as the obvious social aspect, the group will help to offer allimportant advice of a practical nature borne out of experience. Founders of the group are Rosina and Joan. Rosina says “When I was bereaved I knew that I wanted to remain in Spain but without the support of family around me I felt very much alone and at a loss. Taking the first steps to living alone is a daunting prospect, let alone doing it in a foreign country, and I know that others must be feeling the same way. We are not a dating-agency, but simply want to provide a non-threatening space for people to develop new friendships where, if they wish, they can talk about how they are feeling, or problems
they are experiencing, to like-minded people.” Luis Rodriguez, the mayor of Benijofar, says “This is a good initiative for people who are alone and an opportunity for them to meet new people. I am proud to support this new group which I hope will become successful, not only for people in Benijofar, but also in the wider community.” Initially F.A.B. will meet weekly and it is hoped that the group will develop according to response and need. Rosina and Joan look forward to welcoming you on Saturday the 27th September, from 2-4p.m in Bar Catorce, Plaza Inmaculada, Benijofar.

NO HOLIDAYS FOR ADVANCE MOVES Whilst most people headed for the beaches of Spain during the incredibly hot summer months for a well deserved vacation, spare a thought for the Advance Moves International removals crews that were at their busiest during this time of year. Advance Moves managing director Mat Ford-Dunn explained that it is always the summer months when removals crews are at their busiest as it fits in with their clients requirement to relocate between the UK and Spain during school holidays to minimise disruption. ‘It doesn’t help that the removals crews find themselves working their hardest when temperatures are well into the mid 30’s over the summer, but our crews are all very experienced and are used to working in this hot climate. We make a point of starting early in the morning and trying to finish as much work as possible early in the day before it really heats up. All our staff have regular medicals and carry plenty of water to combat the heat and keep themselves hydrated and they all have a very positive attitude and enjoy their work so despite the heat they push on and get the job done.’ This year has been especially busy for Advance Moves with a dramatic increase in the number of removals undertaken that has required the purchase of 5 additional vehicles and a third warehouse in the UK to cope with demand. Mat puts the increased work levels
down to a more buoyant housing market but also in the high levels of service that Advance Moves offers to its clients compared to other removers. Advance Moves is one of a handful of Removal companies in Spain that are fully legal with a Spanish transport licence (tarjeta de transporte) and also members of the British Association of Removers (BAR). Mat was also keen to point out that they Export wrap all items of furniture rather than just blanket wrapping which he explained is a poor alternative offered by other less professional movers. ‘Overall we offer a higher level of service and protection than other removers at a price that is still competitive and that is why our clients keep coming back, you only have to look at our online survey results on our website (www.advancemoves.com) to see how highly our clients rate us and we just keep trying to improve’ said Mat when asked why Advance moves was so busy.

TOP CHOIR SEEKS NEW MEMBERS Melody Makers International, who for the last five years have been one of the most successful choirs on the Costa Blanca, are seeking new members to swell their ranks for the new season starting today - 9th September. The choir, under the direction of professional singer, conductor and vocal tutor, Nigel Hopkins, regularly sings to audiences of 1,000 in the
fabulous Orihuela Costa Resort. They are accompanied by a professional band flown in especially from the UK. Known also as the Friendly Choir because of the warm welcome given to new members, and the fun rehearsals which reap such excellent results, the group is embarking on its next show, entitled 'Music of the Night' - and rehearsals start on 9th September at
A sparkling donation from Ruby’s Golf Society The Torrevieja branch of Asociation Espanola Contra el Cancer, AECC, was recently presented with the sum of 2350 euros by members of El Raso based Ruby’s Golf Society. The money was raised in recognition of the work carried out by AECC’s Torrevieja Hospital Volunteers in supporting Daren Finucane, a founder member of the Golf Society, after recent cancer operations and chemotherapy follow up. Ruby’s Golf Society decided to support the volunteers by organising fund-raising for AECC. The main event was a barbecue, raffle and auction of golfing items, which took place at Ruby's Bar. Money was also raised with a golf event sponsored by local businesses, who also chipped in with additional support by providing raffle prizes and auction items. AECC would like to thank Ruby's Golf Society's committee and their wives for their generosity. A big thank you goes to the sponsors and the people who donated
money and prizes for their generosity too. SPONSORS: Ruby’s Golf, Herritty Electrics, Reeves Butchers, El Raso Services, Rayz Bar, Pro Pools and Gardens, Property Choice, El Raso Restaurant, Property Shop John Grigg, Venture Fleet, Bookie Chris, Hot Stone, Dave Capper, The Med Bar Keith Ellis, Keith Hardy, Ruby’s Bar.

the Asturias Restaurante. These take place from 5.30pm - 7.30pm each Tuesday. Any singers who would like to be involved in this experience should come along to a rehearsal, or telephone 966 775 976 for further details. Anyone with a voice who can sing in tune is welcome as full training is given by our leading voice coach and conductor.
Reports issued by tax experts in Spain are warning UK nationals residing in Spain about the need to change their will to the Nationality Inheritance Law if they want to avoid inheritance being governed by Spanish regulation. European cross-border inheritances can be extremely complex. An EU regulation passed in 2012 (650/2012, also known as Brussels IV) makes the process easier by ensuring that inheritance is treated under a single law by one authority. This regulation also enables citizens to choose between the law of residency and the law of nationality for their inheritance affairs. • Article 22: Establishes the right to choose between Residency Inheritance Law and Nationality Inheritance Law. • Article 20: The law chosen – when opting for Nationality Inheritance Law – can be of a non-European country. • Article 23: The law chosen will govern the entire succession.
Understanding Brussels IV Brussels IV applies to both testate successions (with a will) and intestate
41
Expats must amend their wills to avoid Spanish inheritance laws successions (with no will). It does not imply, in any sense, the alteration of substantive National Inheritance Law of every European country. As a result, matters such as who are the inheritors, or how taxes apply, are not affected in any way by this European regulation. This regulation also creates the European Certificate of Succession. This will facilitate individuals who need to prove their status and rights as heir/administrator of the estate or executor of the will. This certificate will be issued by the country where the deceased had habitual residency, and will provide proof of entitlement to all signatory countries.
What does this regulation mean for residents in Spain? After this regulation, if you are a UK national but live permanently in Spain, make sure that you choose the law of nationality in your will, otherwise your inheritance will be governed by Spanish rules and its obligatory heirs at your death. These rules will apply to all individuals who pass away after 17 August 2015, so it is important that you make the necessary preventive
changes in your will before that date. You can choose Nationality Inheritance Law in your will now, provided that you perform the change according to the rules of the regulation. Residency status is determined by the duration and regularity of the deceased´s presence in the country. Residency requires a close and stable connection with the specific country.
Who is affected by this regulation? The UK, Denmark and Ireland did not sign the regulation. However, any UK, Danish or Irish national that has habitual residency in Spain is still governed by this regulation. If nationals of these three countries want their country's laws of succession to be applied in their will, they must make a new will in Spain. If nationals of these countries have assets in the UK, Ireland or Denmark, a grant of probate will be necessary to administer the UK, Irish or Danish assets. The regulation is not applicable to persons residing in the UK who own Spanish assets. Private international law means that Spanish law applies to any property situated in Spain, and therefore Spanish law will always apply to Spanish property owned by UK residents.

Breakthrough as message sent 5000 miles between two brains Researchers sent messages from India to France - a distance of 5,000 miles without performing any invasive surgery. In a world first, a team of researchers has achieved brain-to-brain transmission of information between humans. The team managed to send messages from India to France - a distance of 5,000 miles - without performing invasive surgery on the test subjects. There were four participants in the study, aged between 28 and 50. One was assigned to a brain-computer interface to transmit the thought, while the three others were assigned to receive the thought. The first participant, located in India, was shown words translated into binary, and had to envision actions for each piece of information. For example, they could move their hands for a 1 or their legs for a 0.
A technique known as electroencephalogry - which monitors brain signals from the outside - was used to record the thoughts as outgoing messages and send them via the internet. At the other end, electromagnetic induction was used to stimulate the brain's visual cortex from the outside and pass on the signal successfully to the three other participants in France. The report's co-author, Alvaro PascualLeone, said: "We wanted to find out if one could communicate directly between two people by reading out the brain activity from one person and injecting brain activity into the second person, and do so across great physical distances by leveraging existing communication pathways. "One such pathway is, of course, the internet, so our question became, 'Could
we develop an experiment that would bypass the talking or typing part of internet and establish direct brain-tobrain communication between subjects located far away from each other in India and France?" The research team was made up of researchers from Harvard University, as well experts from France and Spain.

3D is a waste of money Hollywood studios and TV firms have long tried to persuade us that donning a pair of 3D glasses will improve our TV and movie experience. However, new research claims they are a waste of money in that we have exactly the same emotional response whether footage is in 2D or 3D. Researchers monitored palm sweat, breathing and cardiovascular responses such as heart rate in a bid to see if 3D was worth the extra cash.
Researchers looked at several measures of emotional state in 408 subjects, including palm sweat, breathing and cardiovascular responses, such as heart rate. These measures are commonly used to gauge emotional responses. Four film clips were chosen because each prompted one discrete emotion intensely and in context without viewing the entire film. Study participants viewed a 3-D and 2D clip of approximately five minutes of each film: 'My Bloody Valentine' (fear), 'Despicable Me' (amusement), 'Tangled' (sadness) and 'The Polar Express' (thrill or excitement). Participants were randomized to view the films in a design that balanced the pairs of films watched, in which format, and order of presentation. The increased visual realism of 3-D films is claimed to offer viewers a more vivid and lifelike experience—more thrilling and intense than 2-D because it more closely approximates real life. Researchers at the University of Utah wanted to see if the claims were true. Author Sheila Crowell said the results suggest that as an entertainment medium, 3-D may not provide a different experience from 2-D, insofar as evoking emotional responses go. Crowell said, 'Both 2-D and 3-D are equally effective at eliciting emotional responses, which also may mean that the expense involved in producing 3-D films is not creating much more than novelty.’
Tina from Torrevieja asks: Dear Aunty, I'm fairly new to computers and have a laptop with Window 7. When I try to access my phone bill which comes as email attachments I get the following message on my screen."This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association control panel" I hope you can help with this problem. Aunty Says: Hi Tina. This error message happens when you receive emails with attachments (or try to open files) that Windows does not know what to do with. I am assuming these attachments are PDF files (I receive some facturas the same way) which will require Adobe Reader to open them. Go to www.enetcomputers.net and at the bottom of the homepage is a link to get the latest free version. Oh and once you have the first Adobe Reader installation screen showing make sure you untick the annoying “Optional Offer” box for McAfee or you may end up with two antivirus programs. Jerry via email asks: Hi Aunty, I have recently noticed some problems with my internet speed. I have an 8Mb Movistar
package which has been great up until last week. I signed up to a movie download website in the USA but the download speed was consistently less than 1Mb/sec and the Monty Python boxset I purchased took overnight to finish downloading. I know this isn’t normal so how can I change the speed to be closer to the 8Mb/sec that I pay for. I run Win7 and have upto date antivirus. Aunty Says: What you need to take into consideration here Jerry is that this particular download speed you are seeing will hugely depend on the connection speed in USA, and a lot of these kind of film distribution sites will allocate fixed and smallish chunks of their bandwidth to guarantee everyone gets a reasonable speed. Even though you have 8Mb per second available here in Spain, if the USA based website only upload the film to you at 1Mbps that is the maximum speed the film will download. If you’re not sure that you are consistently getting your 8Mb per sec then have a quick check via www.speedtest.net. Tom via email asks: Hi, Is Internet Explorer 11 compatible with Windows XP? I use
a website that tells me I need IE11 and I have looked on the internet, but have been unable to find out. Aunty Says: Sadly not Tom. You may get away with the latest Firefox or Chrome but I think you will run into problems. I suspect it is time for a Windows upgrade. Joan via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have just bought a new laptop with the horrible Windows 8 but it doesn’t have a £ key as it is a Spanish keyboard. I only need it now and then (I help with the accounts for my daughter’s business in the UK) so I don’t think I need to actually fit a new keyboard. Aunty Says: Hello Joan. A quick fix for this would be to hold down the ‘Alt’ key and type 0163 from you number pad (not the numbers along the top row) plus I have sent you instructions on how to change the keyboard layout within Win8 that will let you make use of the unused dollar key. Email me with your questions and problems at auntyvirus@coastrider.net and I will see what I can do.

Bananas cut stroke risk Eating bananas could cut the risk of strokes in post-menopausal women, a study suggests. Foods high in potassium could help lower the chance by as much as a quarter, it found. Researchers studied 90,137 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 79, for an average of 11 years. They looked at how much potassium they consumed, and whether they had strokes or died during the study. Eating bananas could cut the risk of strokes in post-menopausal women, a study suggests. Foods high in potassium could help lower the chance by as much as a quarter, it found Participants were stroke-free at the start and their average dietary potassium intake was 2,611mg a day. The World Health Organisation’s daily recommendation for women is 3,510mg or more. Only 16.6 per cent of those studied met or exceeded that. Researchers studied 90,137 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 79, for an average of 11 years Results of this study, published in the American Heart Association journal Report, are based on potassium from food, not supplements. A mediumsized banana contains around 430mg. Women who ate the most potassium were 12 per cent less likely to suffer stroke in general and 16 per cent less likely to suffer an ischaemic stroke (where blood to the brain is cut off ) than women who ate the least.

Getting up and about could be key to longer life Standing on your two feet could be the key to longer life, as scientists discover it can prevent a person's DNA from ageing. A team of Swedish researchers found spending less time sitting down could be more important than exercise in extending a person's lifespan. Their findings, published in the British Medical Journal, showed less time on the sofa is strongly linked to the lengthening of telomeres, which sit on the end of chromosomes in cells - DNA storage units in the body.

Skincare News: Post-Summer Skin Boost! Unhappy with your skin? Struggling with lines, wrinkles, brown patches dullness, puffy eyes or dark circles? Are you finding yourself struggling with spots, blackheads, open pores or dry, flaky, red or sore skin more than ever before? Has your acne or rosacea flared up? Or perhaps it’s just looking dull and flat. After the long, hot months of sun here on the Costa Blanca many of us notice changes to our skin. These can be dramatic or subtle changes: It may feel drier, more crêpey and with increased lines and wrinkles. It’s common for our skin to look patchy as the natural melanin production (that gives our skin colour) clusters from stimulation from the sun’s rays and gives rise to brown spots and blotches. Come the beginning of September it’s not only our skin that looks tired and lack-lustre, we can also feel in need of a lift after the extended humidity and consistently high heat of July and August! Our skin, and us, need a post-summer boost! Despite the fact that there are no ‘miracle’ treatments that can wave a ‘magic wand’ to take our skin back twenty years, there are some excellent and affordable Treatments which can dramatically improve the look and feel of our skin and make us feel fresh and rejuvenated! Welcome to the world of the Bespoke Integrated Holistic-Medi Facial! Bespoke Integrated Holistic-Medi Facials utilise the latest technology and product technology to get real skin results whilst being deeply balancing, therapeutic and relaxing. They are

Majority of Britons concerned about driverless car safety Britons are unconvinced by self-driving cars and the overwhelming majority have concerns over their ability to safely navigate busy public roads, with hackers and software bugs topping the list of fears Two thirds of people would not use one on the school run and 54 per cent of people would not even consider owning one. Half of motorists said that equipment failure was their biggest concern with the technology, while 12 per cent said that they were afraid that hackers would target their vehicle and take control of it. Google is pushing ahead with research on fully autonomous cars, clocking up 700,000 miles on US roads already. With no human behind the wheel, responsibility whilst on the road is a legislative grey area; for 15 per cent of British drivers the main worry with driving an autonomous vehicle is who would be liable if an accident occurred. Currently, anyone testing the Google driverless cars in California must have a $5 million insurance policy. But the survey by Autotrader of over 1,000 British motorists conceded that they had obvious benefits for blind and disabled people. The government has promised that autonomous vehicles will be allowed on public roads in the UK by January 2015.

Young foreign pilgrims flock to Spain's Santiago trail Spain's Santiago trail gains fresh popularity in international scenes thanks to pilgrims with smartphones, attracting foreigners from as far as the US, Japan and Korea. One of the young foreign pilgrims smiles for a photo by the last signpost on the Way of Saint James – one of a new wave of young pilgrims bringing fresh life to the Medieval trail. After eight days hiking with a friend, they have reached Santiago de Compostela, the northern Spanish city where the saint's bones are said to lie, and are keen to post their success on Facebook. Pilgrims have hiked this route for centuries. Even Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a native of Santiago, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel hiked a stretch together last Sunday. But the trail has gained fresh life lately as swelling crowds of foreigners flock there – many of them young with smartphones. "I take one or two photos each day and as soon as I find a wifi spot I post them on all the social networks." said the 38 year old pilgrim. Inma Tamayo, who works in the city's Pilgrim Office, said she has seen the change over recent years as the longtime German and Italian visitors have been joined by others from farther afield. “European pilgrims have been coming for centuries, but now we are seeing other nationalities increase greatly, for example Koreans, Japanese and people from the United States." In 2005 the trail drew just under 94,000
visitors, 44 percent of them foreigners. The figure rose to nearly 216,000 by 2013, according to official figures. Visitors from overseas now outnumber Spaniards on the trail, accounting for 55 percent of the pilgrims, said Nava Castro, head of tourism in the Galicia region tourism ministry. The number of US visitors has doubled since 2010 when Hollywood actor Martin Sheen, whose father was Galician, starred in The Way, a film about the trail. "That was a turning point," Castro said. The surge also coincided partly with years of recession in Spain and across Europe, as visitors flocked to the free hiking trail with cheap hostels along the way. At the same time, the Galicia regional government promoted the trail as far afield as Australia, South Korea and Brazil. "The trail is very famous in Japan," said Ryoichi Fujioka, a 64-year-old retired man. He walked 780 kilometres (485 miles) from southern France to the door of Santiago Cathedral. The remains of James the Apostle, Spain's patron saint, are said to lie in the cathedral, and pilgrims to this day prostrate themselves there in
his honour. No vacancies Not all of the hikers come for purely religious reasons, though. Many complete The Way for the adventure and the accomplishment. Pilgrims leave their boots at the door there after walking 20 or 30 kilometres through woods, fields, hamlets and towns. The shelter opened in 1993 and has beds for 62 people in an old pilgrims' hospital from the 13th century. Today it is full and the shelter's manager, Dolores Agra has to stand at the door turning away new arrivals. In one of the hostel's dormitories, a dozen mobile telephones lie plugged in and charging for the next stage of the hike. "In the old days the pilgrims slept in hay lofts, churches and doorways and bathed in the river," said Agra. "Now they come and ask if we have wifi."
Summer road deaths in Alicante province double that of last year It has been a disappointing summer as far as deaths on the road have been concerned in the Valencia region. Between July 1st and August 31st of this year 29 people lost their lives on the roads in the Valencian Community as a whole in a total of 15 separate accidents. 12 people died in the province of Alicante which was seven more than the total number of deaths on the road in the same period last year. In Castellón the percentage increase was even worse with seven people dying this year compared to only two last year and in the province of Valencia 10 people lost their lives compared to 7 in 2013. Overall the figures showed a rise of 107 per cent in the deaths this year over the summer period. The most recent death in the province of Alicante occurred in an accident in Torrevieja about 10 days ago when a 70 year old man died when the car he was driving crashed into a bus. The most serious accident over the summer period occurred during the month of July on the A7 motorway near to Cox. A burst tyre on a lorry travelling in the direction of Murcia caused the
vehicle to swerve across the motorway, into the opposite carriageway where it collided head on with a van on its way to Alicante airport. Eight Romanians including two children were killed in the accident which had resulted in the van being pushed down the side of the motorway into a gully where it burst into flames. The president of the State Association of Victims of Accidents, Francisco Canes was quoted as saying that the figures for 2014 so far were ‘alarming’ and
has appealed to the Ministry of the Interior to investigate the situation. The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) and Snr Canes does not believe enough is being done to understand the causes of accidents and put in place policies to prevent them. ‘The approach in general is not wrong but campaigns should also focus on cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians,’ he concluded. Beautiful Bathrooms, Kitchen & Construction
P R O F I L E
Now you can have the bathroom, kitchen or construction project of your dreams, thanks to design and construction expert Chris Sladden. Beautiful Bathrooms, Kitchens & Construction is the premier installer on the Costa Blanca with more 30 years’ experience in high-end installations. Chris has built the business here on the coast based on his considerable reputation working with London and the home-counties society families, handling the most luxurious and state-of-the-art projects. He worked on many prestigious contracts, including the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen's shop refurbishment in London and Mango’s flag ship store in Covent Garden. Whether you have a family home, a rental property, a small apartment or a sprawling villa, the two most important rooms of the house are the bathroom and the kitchen. Both are centres of activity when it comes to daily life. The kitchen is often the heart of the home with friends and family meeting over a hot drink or meal and where better to seek refuse and ease the stresses of the day than the bathroom with a refreshing shower. It stands to reason therefore, that when it comes to giving your home a facelift, focusing on the bathroom, kitchen or both is often the most effective way to give your home a fresh new look. At Beautiful Bathrooms, Kitchens & Construction the emphasis is on excellent quality and style and Chris offers everything the discerning customer could want from advice on design to guided shopping trips for tiles and fittings. From simple face lifts such as new kitchen doors or shower screens to a complete new design and fitting service including extensions and total refurbishments; Chris uses his wealth of experience to create the perfect solution for his clients lifestyle needs.
Specialists Beautiful Bathrooms, Kitchens & Construction is a bath removal specialist and Chris and his team are fully trained in the correct installation of wet rooms, walkin showers and mobility solutions. This expertise, given the thriving older community on the Costa Blanca has seen Beautiful Bathrooms, Kitchens & Construction go from strength-to-strength. The range of shower trays go from luxurious hand-made bespoke designs featuring elegant glass non-slip mosaic tiles available in almost any colour, to preformed shower trays in porcelain, slate or resin bonded in various colours and sizes to suit all styles, tastes and budget. Chris said: “I only use locally manufactured shower screens that feature high quality 6mm toughened safety glass and a unique click to clean system for the sliding doors, chrome metal handles and chromed frame.” Of course, it’s not only bathrooms, but Chris also specialises in hand fitted kitchens as well as exteriors such as patios, terraces and extensions. A full kitchen design and fitting service is available and under-floor heating can also be installed to any room or throughout the whole house. Chris prides himself on the fact that he is on site from day one until the finish of a contract, working on and managing the project, enabling a stress free project for his client. In his 12 years in Spain, he has developed a full portfolio of happy and satisfied clients and regularly gets client recommendations. El Raso Golf Society 22 members and one guest played on Fri 5 September at our home course, La Marquesa. This was a smaller field than usual due to many players having visiting families and, perhaps, the heat. It was a scorching day with high humidity and the walkers really suffered, particularly those who had played yesterday at the course in a Eurogolf game. NTP results were: Hole 5, Bryan Fenwick, Hole 11, Malcolm Foskett, Hole 15, Stan Low and Hole 17, Dave Smith. Best Front nine was won by Bryan Fenwick with a score of 20 points and best back nine, (on countback), by Jim Weston with a super 20 points. In third place, on countback, was Stan Low with a creditable 38 points with Harry Armstrong coming second with the same score. However the winner, with an outstanding 44 points, and a severe handicap cut, was John Hill. I must mention the efforts of our only guest, Malcolm Foskett, who scored 41 points playing of a handicap of 9. As he was the only guest he could not win a major prize but did have a NTP and, I think, a bottle of wine. All retired to Monos Bar for refreshments and a meal kindly provided by our sponsor Chris Gridley.

Torry see Red! Ribarroja CF 2-1 CD Torrevieja Steve Ekedi fronted the Torry attack and he is a handful. His first ever league goal for Torry was terrific. His two cautions were atrocious, giving grave cause for concern as to the competence of officials at this level. Cesar supported Steve in a forward midfield role and both players stamped a strong claim for regular starts. On 11 minutes, Steve won the ball and shielded it well before playing it to Cesar. The 21 year old returned the ball into the box, where Steve accelerated to and unleashed a left foot drive that crashed in off the underside of the bar. It was a well worked move and a thunderous finish and was the kind of explosive action that fans have come to expect of their new combative striker. Without any wins to date, Ribarroja looked tame and pedestrian, with Torry seizing the initiative and creating chances down both flanks. Brani started off on the right and when Vicente found him in space, he made light of skipping past his marker to the byeline. He looked up and whisked over a teasing ball that Cesar got to, but could not manage sufficient a connection to divert it into the goal. Prior to his goal, Steve Ekedi had worked his way into the box and as he lined up his strike, just skimmed the ball and skewed it wide of the mark. All was looking bright for Torry, who had a five strong midfield with an average age of 21. They worked hard and caused Ribarroja all sorts of problems. However,
a five minute spell when the hosts had their first two attempts on goal, changed the landscape of the game dramatically. Torry assisted in the turnaround themselves by failing to properly clear the ball and as it was picked up 30 yards out, it was quickly released to Fran who had taken up an unmarked central position. He controlled it quickly and thrusting forward, banged a left foot drive into the corner of the net from 25 yards. Oscar managed to get a hand to the ball, but failed to keep it out of his net. Worse was to follow a few minutes later, when flushed with confidence, Ribarroja broke fast down the left and crossed a wicked ball. The more determined Ribarroja forward launched himself at it and sent a flying header past Oscar and into the roof of the net before the Torry keeper had time to blink. It was a very good goal that everyone had to applaud. If that was bad, then farce and incompetence joined forces to see the first half dismissal of Steve Ekedi. He had come on as a substitute in Utiel and received two cautions and thus dismissed and the same experience was repeated here. His first caution was when jumping with an opponent who landed awkwardly, but right in front of the home bench who jumped to their feet screaming blue murder. This made up the referee's mind and a card was produced. In all honesty, it did not even warrant a foul.
When Steve made a further and totally innocuous aerial challenge, the same mob yelled for blood and Senor Garcia Gallegos obliged. It was unbelievable and raised unwanted thoughts as to the motivation of officials. Torry reorganised and Cesar found himself leading the line and working hard to make the needed impact. Before the half ended, he chased a lost cause, nipped in between two defenders and toe-poked the ball over the advancing keeper's head, only to see it bounce a yard wide. Torry's searched for an equaliser - if not two goals and all three points - but were severely hampered when Jorge was man handled in the box at a corner kick. No award was made and as Ribarroja cleared their lines, his frustration emerged and
Line up in Ribarroja
he had a kick at his tormentor. This was one infringement the linesman saw and Jorge was duly dismissed on his say so. The nine man Torry team still seemed like they could manage another and deserved a penalty when Burguillos was held back in the box when looking sure to make the ball and beat the keeper. Torry left downbeat and weary as the Valencian sky put on an electrical storm show of magnificent proportions. It was something to stare at out the window on the coach on the long journey back. Torry face 2nd placed Torre Levante on Sunday at the Vicente Garcia with a 18.30 kick off. With Jorge and Steve missing, it is yet another shuffling of the pack for the beleaguered manager.

La Zenia La Siesta Golf Society Golf Society fundraiser for Caritas ABBEY ANGLING The first round of the Winter Series was fished at Nancy’s on the 2nd September, it is getting harder to peg a match on this stretch following the recent closure of the water and pegs below the boom, and we still do not know the reason for this as yet but are endeavouring to find out. I have been told by the Spanish fishermen that if caught fishing there is a 200 euro fine. A lot of the other pegs are now getting very overgrown. The weights were not bad on the day, with some big fish being caught. Also there is a lot of small fish in the 3 to 5 oz bracket, which is a good sign for the future. 1st Lennie (Ex cultural attaché) Bolton with 15.720kg fishing the pole using maggot and caster 2nd Dave (The sweetie man) Hutchinson with 15.620kg fishing the
One of the best ever... We were hoping for a thriller to bring down the curtain on the hurling championship. We got the thriller, but the curtain is still suspended until Saturday 27th September when these two giants of hurling bring us back to Croke Park for ‘thriller take 2’. There was so little to choose between two brilliant teams that the electronic eye had to be called in to make a draw of it in the end. Incredibly, this is the third year on the trot that the hurling final has ended in a draw. ‘More money for the GAA’ the cynics might moan – but what hurling fan would ever wish for such a match to come to an end. Kilkennny and Tipperary served up 54 scores between them over 70 minutes and still managed to remain deadlocked at the end of it all. From this statistic you might be inclined to think that the marking was loose and scores easy to come by. Nothing could be further from the truth. Despite tight marking and ferocious tackling the marksmanship was sublime from both sides. Tipperary only chalked up three wides for the entire game and Kilkenny six. Just by way of contrast, the AllIreland final of 1985 comes to my mind, when Galway lost by two points after hitting 19 wides. Sunday’s final will have to go down as one of the greatest of all time: It had everything and kept the full house on their toes without any let-up for the duration. Tipperary will probably feel they should have won it; having missed two penalties and gaining most

moved from Blanca and fished on the El Bosquet Complex on the 3rd September. HE IS BACK with a vengeance from the U.K. Lennie Bolton was in first place yesterday by a narrow margin and won again today. This angler is definitely a master of his craft, drawn on the lake fishing the pole using paste and maggot he landed four fish for 10kgs plus smaller Carp and Mullet to reach this winning weight. Bill Cannon is also drawing well this is his 4th match on the short canal to take second place. 1st Lennie (Ex cultural attaché) Bolton with 26.080kg fishing the pole using paste and maggot 2nd Bill (The gunner) Cannon with 22.480kg fishing the pole using corn and pellet 3rd Doug (The welsh Goldminer) Hornblow with 16.440kg fishing the pole using maggot and corn. momentum in the crucial last few minutes. But Kilkenny had their chances too, and like their opponents, missed a couple more good goal scoring opportunities. Lar Corbett was back to his best for Tipp and hurled Croke Park as if he wanted to leave his footprints on every blade of grass. Seamus Callanan answered his critics with a superb performance in attack, while young John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer consolidated his star quality. Richie Hogan was once again terrific for Kilkenny (especially in the second half ) and he finished with 6 points, while Richie Power scored two goals and a point or two. TJ Reid hit the target for 1-08 – the goal being of the majestic variety. It was end to end stuff from start to finish and there were bound to be mistakes due to the pace set by all the players; but mostly it was extended bouts of breath taking hurling will stick in the memory. Many pundits expected a different type of game. There was talk beforehand of grudges and of ‘getting to know each other’ early on. Happily nothing could have been further from the truth. There was hardly s sullen stroke or bad foul in the entire match. The level of sportsmanship was a credit to both camps and their managers. Roll on the replay! Kilkenny 3-22 Tipperary 1-28 All that is missing is the black cap… It sometimes seems that as well as not being allowed to speak ill of the dead in Ireland, we dare not criticise
A good turn out again for our Thursday game at Mar Menor. Welcome to the snow birds who are starting to re appear. Now they know what weather we have been playing in, all summer, hot again, and very slight wind. We played full handicap stableford,4 N/t/p's, and the usual twos pot. Chris Blown was out again trying to clean up again, but this time only one pin, and just missed out on winning the day by 1pt. Results were pins. referees either Amateur players and team managers can be scrutinised and dissected until their bones are laid out bare for all to see, so it isn't it only fair that a more expansive evaluation of the roles played by referees takes place as well? Apologists for bad referees will say that referees don’t win or lose matches: This is absolute rubbish. The ref can play Robin Hood; only more often than not in Gaelic football it seems to be Robin Hood in reverse; -
Times are very hard for a huge number of people in this area. La Siesta G.S., apart from being one of the oldest golf societies in the area, prides itself on collecting for charity each year. A society spokesperson told the CoastRider, “This year we have set ourselves a challenge – to feed approximately 200 families this Christmas in collaboration with Cáritas
Parroquial.” “Please help us and enjoy a great day’s golf. On 27th September we are holding an open Golf Tournament. Shotgun start at 9am – green fee 45€ and 20€ per buggy (if required).” For further information, or to reserve your place please contact Campoamor Golf Club on 965321366 or email: golf@golfcampoamor.es.
Las Ramblas Golf Society Firstly the result of the outstanding Change Partners game from last week’s report was a win for the team of Norman Page, Alan Douglas, Ron and Yvonne Phipps with a superb score of 89 pts. We started this week’s competitions on Monday with a 2 ball better ball which was won with an excellent score of 47 pts by the team of Olga Douglas and Brian Dent. In second place with a creditable 44 pts was the pairing of Ron Percival and Bryan Neal with 44 pts. They must have played well as they completed their round in only 2 hrs 45 mins. Unfortunately the time saved on the round was nullified to some extent as several members were delayed by 45 mins on leaving the clubhouse due to a car being on fire on the exit road. On Wednesday it was our usual stableford competition which saw some excellent scores particularly from Alan Douglas who recorded a magnificent 39
pts to win Category One. The happiest player on the day however was Dave Puling who scored the only 2 of the day to take the 2's Club kitty. Full results of the day were as follows: Cat 1 1st. Alan Douglas 39 pts 2nd. Phil Herrington 37 pts 3rd. Mick Brentnall 36 pts Cat 2 1st. Roger Tunstall 37 pts 2nd. Ron Percival 35 pts 3rd. John Robertson 33 pts On Friday we played a Reverse 6x6x6 with one score counting on the first 6 holes, two on the second 6 and three on the final 6. It was no surprise that the team with two lady members ran out easy winners as the ladies tend to score well over the last six holes at Las Ramblas. The winning team with 85 pts were Rachel Leckey, Olga Douglas, Barry Holtham and Terry Cullen.
robbing from the poor and giving to the rich. First of all, let us be very fair here and state that rarely, if ever, does a referee set out to be unfair or dishonest. But too often he seems to give lard to the fat pig’s belly. Yes, referees are human and like the players and managers, do make mistakes in the course of the match; but you cannot blame supporters for screaming to the high heavens when their team is on the
receiving end of disastrous calls. By any stretch of the imagination would Robin Hood have taken the Leinster Senior Football title from Louth in 2010 and given it to Meath, as Martin Sludden did? He did everything bar don the black cap that day. It is accepted that there is a 10% luck factor in a closely fought hurling or football match. Most of that luck comes down to the call of the referee. Again, in fairness to the man in black, close calls are close calls and they have to be called one way or the other. But on a good day they should balance over the 70 minutes. Sympathy is of no use to Mayo footballers right now. Had they got a fairer nod of Meath referee, Cormac Reilly, they would be in an All-Ireland final. Lee Keegan`s dismissal was wrong. In the replay, Kerry should have been reduced to fourteen men from early on. This was not a borderline 50/50 call; it was a blatant disregard for a primary rule of the game. Then, Kerry were gifted frees, particularly during extra time in the replay, which were no frees and won them the match. Managers and players are both lauded or criticised with immunity. The referee collects his expenses for the day and should be subjected to the same scrutiny. Barry Kelly had an excellent match in Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling final. There is much more movement at speed in hurling than football, so one would imagine there would be more mistakes by hurling referees, but this is not the case. email: suilseabhac@gmail.com
