You cannot have dialogue without having a good listener. Guess what!? That’s YOU (the adult)! Tell the child, “I am working on learning how to be a good listener.”

You can ask the child to repeat their interesting quote! Say, “Wow, you just said something very intriguing! Can you say that again so I can write it down?” Practice slow listening... It is ok to not give a response right away. Say, “Maybe we could think for a little while about what you just said. I’m going to write it down so we don’t forget!”

If you don't have time, you can limit the story to just one page. "Your story can be as short as you want but it can't be longer than this page." This is the perfect time to introduce the "to be continued" concept.
