Storytelling Assessment Narrative Development And Connectivity: Level 1: Describes a situation Level 2: One or 2 events occur Level 3: Sequence of events (more than 2 events that happen in a logical sequence) (the reasoning is implied)

w e i v e r

Level 4: Events are linked to each other with words like “because or so (the child is explaining the reasoning)

Child-Adult Interaction:

Level 1: Child states their ideas without responding to adult input

Level 2: Child is reluctant to state ideas and adult is suggesting most of the ideas Level 3: Child is confident in their ideas and is able to use adult input to expand and extend those ideas; there is a smooth back and forth of.

P

Character Development:

Level 1: Characters just appear, no action Level 2: Characters do actions but reasons are not explored Level 3: Characters have stated motivations for their actions Level 4: Characters’ emotions and relationships are described and connected to their actions

How to use: to look for milestone markers for your child's development, you can use this assessment after the completion of every coauthored story and assess how they do over time. Keep in mind: A) Typical development has wide variation. B) Children make advances and then seem to regress, so it's normal for your child to tell stories all over the place regarding this rubric. C) Story structure is a cultural artifact, this rubric works for EuropeanAmerican/middle class populations, but might not be relevant for other cultural groups. Our schedule invites you to tell a story with your child, 2 days per week. But you should feel free to change it so that it works for you. Research shows that when this practice is a consistent part of your routine, it has language and cognitive benefits for your child. What's marked as Anything in the schedule is an open-ended template on CoAuthor. It’s a plan B in case your child doesn’t like the proposed story options in the schedule.
