It’s the edition that contains the list of those people and businesses across the community who have earned your votes to be named the BEST OF ROME.
Contrary to popular belief, this competition isn’t decided by the Rome News-Tribune. We only host the competition. In fact, an outside company handles all logistics as well as the security for the contest. They ensure, as much as possible, that it’s run in a fair manner.
And we count on you, the readers, to keep it fair as well.
It’s not easy to be named the Best Of.
Individuals and businesses first have to be nominated. If they get the most nominations in their respective categories, that earns them a place on the official ballot. And from there, folks all across our community vote by the thousands. And they vote often.
The winners and runners up of this year’s competition are listed inside these pages. AS you look through the names in each category, remember that it took thousands of votes for some of them to win, depending on how competitive their category was.
If you’re listed on these pages as having won or placed in your category, you should be pround of that achievement. It shows a committment by Rome and Floyd County residents to choose you as their favorite service, business or individual at what you do.
But while the Best Of contest dominates this particular issue, you’ll also find some cool features inside as well.
We have a big spread focused on one of Rome’s most popular and enriching annual events, the Rome International Film Festival. Each year the event grows bigger and better, providing festivalgoers with a variety of independent films on a multitude of subjects.
The festival also offers social gatherings, panel discussions, music events and even celebrity sightings. We think you’ll enjoy our story on just one aspect of this year’s festival which takes place Oct. 31-Nov. 3.
And as an homage to our rich and vibrant music scene, we have a few pages dedicated especially to live music events that took place in Rome and Floyd County this year. From rock legends Styx performing at The Forum to The Rome Music Collective’s unique concerts.

The Live Music Scene
Rome is blessed with talented local musicians as well as fun venues where music lovers can gather to be entertained. The Live Music Scene pages sprinkled througout this issue of Rome Life Magazine are a testament to the great music offered right here in our beautiful city. These pages showcase live music events such as the popular First Friday concerts at the Town Green, a recent Nashville Songwriters Night at Schroeder’s Deli Courtyard, Rock legends Styx at The Forum and Rome Music Collective, a large gathering of local musicians who perform an entire iconic album from start to finish. Their most recent performance was of Bob Marley’s “Exodus” album. Rome International Film festival brings viewing opportunities for all ages with its soft opening
Halloween and movies go together like candy corn and costumes. That’s something the Rome International Film Festival leadership recognizes, and viewable programming for Oct. 31, the date of the soft opening for the festival this year, won’t disappoint those who venture downtown. Halloween promises to be a night of on-screen laughs and screams and a time to socialize for those looking for family friendly activities and exclusive viewing opportunities.
The evening will kick off with a screening of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” at the DeSoto Theatre at 5 p.m. The showing takes place in partnership with the Downtown Development Authority, and there will be a red carpet for those who want to grab some photos on the way in or out.

after the merchant-hosted trick-ortreating that will take place in the early afternoon. The film is free, and it’s only about a half hour long, she said, so there may be some cartoons afterward.
“It’s really fun,” she said. “And you know, it’s kind of a very festive occasion. And we thought for people who maybe want to eat dinner but don’t want to eat at 5 p.m., you can stay downtown and watch this little short film.”
A film race
Later, at the Rome City Auditorium, Georgia Highlands College and University of West Georgia film students will show the results of a film race challenge. The challenge, which took place earlier this month, had participants create five-minute films that will air free to the public.
“This is the first time we’ve ever hosted it,” Seth Ingram, RIFF creative director and film theater and digital entertainment chair at Georgia Highlands College, said of the film race. “West Georgia does one, and they’ve hosted (it) on their campus, but I reached out since the Georgia Highland students - we don’t have as big of a program, and there’s not enough of our students to fill out an entire program … I just offered to host it here, and I think it was exciting for all of their students to be able to come up and be a part of it. I think we’ll have between 10 and 15 teams.”
Fantasy/comedy/horror fans can catch the 40th anniversary screening of the 1984 classic horror/comedy “Gremlins” at 7 p.m. at the DeSoto. Zach Galligan, who played the role of Billy in the movie is slated to be in attendance. And at 9:15 p.m., the

DeSoto will again be pressed into service for a series of after-dark shorts made in Georgia; viewers can catch horror, horror/comedy or just spooky experiences. And if these viewing opportunities aren’t quite enough, there’s a party at 9 p.m. at the Seven Hills Building beside the DeSoto for RIFF patrons and filmmakers. It will feature, Cook said, Halloweenthemed refreshments like red velvet cake.
The “Gremlins” and “Charlie Brown” showings, she pointed out, are a way to draw in younger viewers since the festival, overall, appeals to a more grown-up audience.
“We believe that we need to keep kids exposed to fun, digital entertainment things that are in real life versus only on screens at their own house,” she said. “We think it’s more fun for them to participate together, and so we try to do something like this at the Desoto, or various other places in town several times a year.”

The festival
The festival itself extends through Nov. 4 this year. In the past, it’s drawn industry luminaries like Ethan Hawke and Burt Reynolds. The event has shone a spotlight on independent films and projects made in Georgia; last year marked its 20th anniversary. It brings a variety of events throughout the year, including last year’s Through a Different Lens film series in partnership with Berry College and the Made in Rome Summer Family Movie Series. Its flagship event, though, is the fourday festival each fall, which, as Ingram told the Rome News-Tribune last year, has brought in as much as a half million dollars in economic impact in the past. Various levels of patronage include behind-the-scenes opportunities, celebrity meetings and afterparties. Tickets are available now at riffga.com.

We love a Christmas Parade

Those who look forward to the annual Cedartown and Rome Christmas Parades only have a few more weeks before they can bundle up and experience the sights and sounds of these spectacular annual events.
The City of Cedartown has announced details of its Christmas Parade which will take place on Dec. 5 starting at 6 p.m.
The theme for this year’s parade is “Cedartown’s Night of Twinkling Lights.”
New this year is an extension of the parade route. Parade line-up will be along East Ellawood Avenue. From there, parade entrants will travel down Ellawood and turn right on to Main Street. The intersection of MLK Jr. Blvd. and Canal Street will be temporarily closed as the parade makes its way downtown. The parade route will end at East Queen Street.
Those wishing to participate in the Cedartown parade can fill out an online application and provide a digital signature. The form will automatically
send to the City’s Christmas Parade Committee. The form can be accessed online by visiting cedartowngeorgia.gov/christmasparade/.
Dec. 3 is when colorful floats and marching bands will make their way through downtown Rome. Dozens of floats, representing local businesses, schools, churches and organizations will make their way down Broad Street to the delight of thousands of Rome and area residents who line the parade route each year, braving sometimes freezing temperatures, to be a part of the magical tradition.
This year’s theme will be “A CHRISTmas Carol” and the parade will begin at 7 p.m.
The rain date for Rome’s parade will be Dec. 5.

A representative from each entry must attend a meeting at the Rome Civic Center on Monday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. where they will receive a packet with line-up instructions.
