Tribute to KAY NIELSEN Words by LILIAN CHO
ho is Kay Nielsen?
Nielsen born March 12th 1886 was a Danish Illustrator. One might even recognize his dark ethereal illiustrattions when researching Fairytale stories. Neilsen was most popular in the early 20th century.
Perhaps Nielsen’s most recognized works are his illustrations for the book Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen in 1924. Nielsen also created drawings for The Brothers Grimm Hansel and Gretal.
Why we love him: Nielsen was born in Copenhagen. He was born to parents who were already in the arts. Both his mother and father were actors in their own right. Coming from an artistic family it’s no wonder Nielsen fell in love with art. Nielsen studied art in Paris from 1904 to 1911. In 1911 - 1916 he lived in England where he recieved his first comission. He was hired by Hodder and Stoughtor to Illustrate a collection of Fairytales. Nielsen also worked on Illustrations for Charles Perrault’s fairytale book. Nielsen created hauntingly beautiful drawings for Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Cinerella & Bluebeard.
In 1914 Nielsen provided 25 color plates and more than 21 monotone images for the popular children’s book East of the Sun and West of the Moon. One of Nielsen’s most collosol achievements was his brief work with Disney. In 1939 Nielsen spent his days living in California and working for The Walt Disney Company. He was personally recommended by past employers to Walt Disney himself. Nielsen’s work can be seen in early adaptions of “Ave Marie” and sequences in “Fantasia”. Feeling his work was no longer in demand after a slow demise at Disney. Nielsen returned to Denmark. Nielsen contracted a chronic cough and later died on June 21,1957. A tragic story for one who created such enormous tales with his art.
