A LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
We started the issue thinking about mermaids and the deep blue sea. That is where the basis for “BLUE SUMMER” came about. Sometimes small ideas become much more. They expand and grow. We noticed a trend from our submitters. We began to see submissions that highlighted the best aspects of summer. They didn’t just focus on the water aspect of summer but the sun, the heat the fashion, the gardens.
Sometimes ideas expand and become so much more then what one origionally thinks. We like to grow with our contributers. Alas, Blue Summer was born. We kept it simple, fun and beautifully girly the way Coco Indie always see’s it’s aesthetic.

COCO: Tell us about yourself and your brand? SVETLANA ZIGGEL: PLAKINGER is our family name, we intuitively wanted it to be our brand’s name as we wanted it to be personal, related to ourselves and connected to our family. PLAKINGER is a contemporary and luxurious womenswear label. Our garments are sensual and strong with a cosmopolitan elegance. Produced in limited editions, the collections are designed for confident and stylish women. We also offer a ready-to-wear line for little girls, meant for a matching mother and daughter look. We want little girls to be just as precious and gorgeous as their mothers :) COCO: Why did you choose fashion design? GALINA PLAKINGER: I decided to study fashion design as a young girl because I was fascinated by the impact of style and how people could change merely through their clothes. I was thrilled by the cuts, the textures of different fabrics and the details which could define the complexity of a garment. And of course, I wanted to work creatively in a handmade manner. I worked in ateliers when living in the former Soviet Union and when we moved to Germany I started my own bespoke atelier. Later on, we established PLAKINGER with my daughter Svetlana. COCO: What inspired you to create your S/S16 collection? SZ: The inspiration for PLAKINGER Spring Summer 2016 collection was the sense of Brazil, its diversity and blend of cultures. We wanted to create a collection full of vivid colours and textures, which would follow a Brazilian woman from Copacabana beach wearing airy and tiered pieces, to dancing at the Carnival in Rio in wildly fringed and cut-out dresses or starting the Amazons Jungle safari in the green pantsuit or golden coat. The sensual but strong, feminine and bold style of Brazilian women was inspiring and influenced our choice of cuts and silhouettes. For the first time, we accessorised this collection with jewellery. The hand-painted flamingo necklaces and bracelets as well as gold plated cuffs borrow from popular Brazilian elements.

COCO: Where would you like to see yourself /the brand in the future?

SZ: We opened our first flagship store in China in December last year. Looking into our future we
COCO: What is the best thing according to you about being a designer and what are some challenges you have had to face?
GP: Being fashion designers feeds our creativity. I like starting from scratch every season when designing a collection. Routine is non-existent and there’s no better way to express ourselves. However, it’s very challenging on the flip side too. For a family business like ours, workload is significant when developing a new collection like Spring/Summer 2017 for instance, while still selling and advertising Spring/Summer 2016 and being ready for when the Autumn/Winter 16/17 collection will hit the stores. We have to work in concert in this interconnected planning. It takes a lot of preparation to juggle it all.
would like to further grow the label and expand our product offering. For the upcoming Spring/Summer 2017, we’ve teamed up with a duo of French designers for a capsule collection made of sculpted jewellery. Exploring new fields of expertise, stepping out of our comfort zone will be at the core of PLAKINGER for the years to come.
