A letter from the editors

Just a few weeks back in was international womens day and this issue felt like it corrosponded with that. A girl of your dreams could really be anyone, anyway you imagine her to be. There is no rule of thumb for her. International womens day had us thinking a lot about iconic woman like Briggite Bardot and Lin Dai, so we added a little special something to show you what our dream girl is like.

That said, we can’t believe this is already our 3rd volume of Coco Indie and our 7th issue. Coco started years ago from a basement computer and has really grown into something unexpected. We keep pushing her as much as we can to become something better and better with each issue. We appreciate you for sticking by us.

xoxo Coco Editors.

Talkin’ Shop with

Vivienne Mok

CI: Tell us a bit about yourself ?

VM: Hello, my name is Vivienne Mok, I was born in NYC but grew up between Paris and Hong Kong. I am a self-taught photographer currently living between Paris and Switzerland. I studied Fashion Design at Parsons and worked as a designer in a French fashion house for a few years. I discovered and fell in love with photography during that time and decided to pursue this path since then.

CI: What inspires you to not only photograph but also make clothing for your shoots?

VM: Actually it was making clothes that was one (amongst others) of the reasons that led me into photography! I have always loved working with my hands and I have been stitching garments and making accessories since I was a teenager, even before my BFA studies in Fashion Design. After graduating, while I worked as a designer for a brand, on the side and in my free time I was making clothes for myself or friends. I would imagine how those garments could look like in certain situations and settings, a sort of story. I would spot locations, that would fit with the clothes... So that’s how I started my first ‘fashion’ pictures.

In the beginning I made every single garment to fit with my ideas and atmosphere for each shooting... Sort of ‘mini-collections’ so to speak. That however requires a lot of time and as the photo sessions became more and more frequent, and photography became more important to me, I couldn’t keep up with the pace (I would often stay up all night to stitch) so I started borrowing garments from designers and hunting for more vintage and antique clothing and mixing them with my own clothes. I still make garments now and then to style my photo sessions, especially if I have a specific idea for a shooting /theme in mind. I style almost all of my photos shoots myself as well as installing the sets to help create the atmosphere I am looking for. For me a photo session is a whole: from installing backdrops and decoration, or location scouting, choosing the styling, hair and make-up and taking pictures as well as a good connection & communication with the model while shooting.

CI: Can you tell us a bit about your shop and what inspired you to open it? VM: This has been something that has been on my mind for a little while, I’ve had requests from people asking if I would sell the clothes featured in my pictures and stylists borrowing my designs for shootings for a while. Many have told me they loved the clothes featured in my pictures, so I wanted that in this shop one will find items that are true to the aesthetics of my photography work. Since I started photography I have made but also especially collected many clothes for the purpose of styling my shoots. I love them all but it makes no sense to keep them all and I’m really happy if they can be useful to other people and if they can find a new home. And like this things can move around.

Coco Indie | Q&A Pg.42

Coco Indie | Q&A Pg.43

CI: What inspires you to create the images and wardrobe that you do for your shoots? VM: I am inspired by intriguing faces, things from my daily environment, Light, Nature, beautiful landscapes, pretty old things that have a tell a story, classic paintings, fairytales, moody movies, colors, victorian clothing, ballet, flowers, the bohemian 70’s, etc... When I make clothes texture and volume as well as soft colors are very important to me, chiffon, lace, tulle, they create a nice volume and flow/fall very well when worn, these materials fit very well with my dreamy photographic atmosphere, they help to create a soft cocooning feel. I love making things around the theme of ballet also, different kinds of tutus being one of my favorite items to make. CI: When did you start designing? VM: I think when I was about 15-16years old I started making my own clothes from vintage fabrics from my grandmother (she used to work in a textile factory), who also taught me how to stitch in the beginning. Those were done a bit ‘free-style’ of course but it was the first step, and I decided to study fashion design later on. CI: What are your future plans for both your photographic images as well as your new shop? VM: Photography is my main activity, the shop is for the moment a side project. Because of traveling, I will only be able to have it open at certain times of the year, but I hope that I can manage to have it open all year or almost in the future. But I prefer not to make plans that are too rigid, you never know how things go in your life, so I am hoping for the best and am happy to learn each day from what I am doing and grateful that I am able to do what I love each day.
