We are focusing on expanding our academic offerings, enhancing student services, and strengthening community partnerships. Together, we can ensure that our students receive the best possible education and are well-prepared to succeed in their future endeavors.

I invite you to review the highlights of our achievements in this annual report. It showcases the remarkable progress we’ve made, largely due to your support. We are optimistic about the future and the potential to further our mission with your help.

Thank you once again for your generosity and belief in our vision. I look forward to the opportunity to connect with you and share more about our plans for the future.

Message from the Executive Director

As we reflect on another remarkable year at the College of the Canyons Foundation, I am thrilled to share some highlights and extend my deepest gratitude for your ongoing support. Your contributions make a profound impact on our students and allow us to enhance the educational experience for our students and community.

One of the most exciting parts of writing this report was having the opportunity to visit the College of the Canyons vineyard. Even though the vineyard is visible from I-5, many people don’t even know it’s there. It was wonderful speaking with Josue and Steve to learn about grapes and the wine making process, and it was also fun learning about the history of the vineyards and the people who donated the vines, Ami and Remo Belli.

I also want to commend our faculty and staff for their incredible generosity. Their commitment to our Foundation and COC is evident, with many choosing to contribute directly to scholarships and resources that benefit our students. Their leadership and dedication inspire us all, reinforcing the importance of community support in achieving our goals.

Our Annual Swing for Student Success Golf Tournament was another highlight, bringing together friends and supporters for a day of fun and fundraising. Thanks to your participation and sponsorship, we raised significant funds that will directly benefit our students and programs. It was heartwarming to see so many people come together in support of our mission. We look forward to this event every year!

Thank you for being an essential part of our journey. Your support allows us to continue our work, making a lasting impact on the lives of our students and in the community. Together, we are building a brighter future.

Warm regards,

Desiree Dodd

More than $270,000 in scholarships to nearly 300 deserving students! Annual Scholarship Celebration

Stephanie Corral

Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, the Foundation had the honor of awarding more than $270,000 in scholarships to nearly 300 deserving students from across campus. Thanks to the investment of our donors, we empowered students to focus on their education, easing their financial burdens and allowing them to achieve their academic and personal goals.

The evening was filled with gratitude and excitement as scholarship recipients had the opportunity to meet, and personally thank, the donors who made their scholarships possible. It was not just a celebration of student success, but also a testament to the commitment of our community to making education accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic background.

Among the highlights of the evening were speeches by Professor Victoria Leonard and student Daniel Chable. Professor Leonard underscored the power of scholarships in enabling students to follow their dreams and realize their potential, while Daniel Chable, a music student, shared his personal journey and the importance of his scholarship in allowing him to continue his education and cultivate his passion for music.

Students of all ages and backgrounds gathered to celebrate their journey, including Eric Jefferson Sr., a double

major in paralegal studies and kinesiology. This future physician’s assistant currently balances his professional aspirations with another crucial title: dad. As a single father, Eric exemplifies the belief that life’s challenges should never stand in the way of achieving one’s educational goals.

“I had to overcome a lot of obstacles and barriers: age, children, and time. But here I am accomplishing my goals as a double major at COC. The scholarship awarded gave me the confidence to accomplish my goals, academically and entrepreneurially. It empowered me to succeed at anything. I’m grateful to the COC community for their support.”

This year’s Scholarship Awards Celebration was more than just a night of recognition; it was a reminder of the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to earn an education. With every scholarship, a door is opened for a student – one that leads to limitless possibilities. We cannot wait to see what these talented individuals achieve in the years to come. Their success is our shared success and, together, we are making a difference in the future of our community.

THE FOUNDATION’S 2ND ANNUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The Foundation’s 2nd Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was a showcase of athleticism and filled with intense competition for a great cause! A heartfelt thank you goes out to the many teams who participated in the April event, and a special congratulations to the Statham Academy team for taking home the trophy!

The event consisted of a dynamic mix of community members, student-athletes, and semi-professional players, each bringing their respective energy to the court. Thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of everyone involved, we raised an impressive $3,450 to support the College of the Canyons community.

This successful tournament would not have been possible without the efforts of Taylor Kellstrom, a dedicated Foundation board member and a Gold Sponsor for the event. Taylor’s commitment to this cause was evident in every aspect of the tournament’s organization.

“I had a great time playing some basketball for an amazing cause. I’m proud to say the event grew in its second

year with more participants and funds raised for our students! It’s always a good time to get people together, play some ball, and raise vital funds for our students!”

Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s tournament—we’re just getting started, and we can’t wait to build on this year’s success!

Championing the Arts

A MASTERCLASS WITH MANDY PATINKIN

Art plays an integral role in shaping a thriving community. It has the power to inspire, broaden our perspectives, and foster meaningful connections. Throughout the previous year, members of the Patrons of the Arts once again dedicated their time and funds to enhance the cultural life of both the Santa Clarita Valley and College of the Canyons.

Through the generous support of our Patrons, we raised funds that directly benefited COC students by providing them with extraordinary opportunities, including participation in exclusive masterclasses. Thanks to these

efforts, the campus community was given an opportunity to attend a masterclass with Mandy Patinkin, a legendary figure in the performing arts on Broadway and television. These sessions offered students unique, hands-on insights into the world of professional performance, enriching their artistic education and outlook.

When you become a member of the Patrons of the Arts, you help inspire the next generation of artists and support an invaluable cultural resource for the entire community. To learn more about how you can get involved, please contact the Foundation by calling our main line (661) 362-3434.

CONGRATULATIONS TO STEVE CORN OUR 2024 SILVER SPUR HONOREE!

In April, the Foundation hosted its 32nd Annual Silver Spur Award Gala, honoring Steve Corn for his service to the community and commitment to the college. An impressive gathering of Steve’s family, friends, and colleagues came together to celebrate his achievement in what proved to be an unforgettable evening at the Westlake Village Inn.

Although guests enjoyed a lively cocktail reception, and the gourmet dinner that followed, the highlight of the night was the presentation of the prestigious Silver Spur to Steve in recognition of his leadership and philanthropy.

As the Foundation’s highest honor, the Silver Spur Award is presented annually to individuals who have had a significant impact on both the college and the Santa Clarita Valley. Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook took to the stage to share heartfelt remarks, expressing gratitude for Steve’s leadership. She noted his efforts in initiatives like the College Promise campaign and establishment of the culinary arts center (iCUE), and his continued support of the Wine Studies program. She praised him as a visionary whose dedication has helped develop College of the Canyons into the empowering, formative institution it is today.

A seasoned real-estate veteran, Steve joined Newhall Escrow Co. in 1990, earning the CEO title in 2004. He transformed the company into one of the leading escrow services in Northern Los Angeles County, servicing areas

across the Santa Clarita, San Fernando, and Antelope valleys. When he’s not working, Steve enjoys RV trips, barbecue competitions, fishing, and spending time with family – passions he shared with audience members as he accepted the award.

Throughout the remainder of his speech, Steve highlighted the fulfillment he has found in supporting higher education and helping make Santa Clarita a better place to live, work, and grow. Above all, though, he emphasized the value of the relationships he has made leading up to this profound milestone in his career.

Joining him in celebration were his wife of 30 years, Carla, their daughter Chelsea, son-in-law Mike, his parents Linda and Ron, and granddaughter Charlotte. He was ecstatic to announce that they would soon be joined by the newest member of the Corn family, his second grandchild, Jackson.

Months later, the impact of the Steve’s Silver Spur Award Gala remains immeasurable, with its funds advancing our mission to support students. The evening served not only as a celebration of his achievements, but also as a reminder of the power of philanthropy – our community raised over $84,000, to be invested in our students through scholarships and emergency funds like Cougars Care. As we reflect on an incredible evening, we would like to proudly congratulate Steve Corn for earning his Spurs!

Cultivating Knowledge: THE VINEYARD AT COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS

College of the Canyons has the best-kept secret in Santa Clarita. With 120 zinfandel grape vines, the vineyard at COC serves as a source of quality wine that supports various educational initiatives within the college and the wider community.

Josue Lopez: The Caretaker of the Vines

Josue Lopez has been a cornerstone of the vineyard for the past eight of his 18 years in various roles at the college. His responsibilities extend beyond mere upkeep; he manages the vineyard with a holistic, organic approach that eschews pesticides in favor of natural methods. From late February, when the oak trees on campus begin to sprout new leaves, through the harvest season in late October, Lopez dedicates significant time and effort to the vineyard.

His tasks include ensuring the vines receive adequate watering, removing weeds, and turning the soil to promote healthy growth. During a recent tour of the vineyard, Lopez explained his meticulous pruning technique, vital for maintaining the quality of the grape production. Each vine is carefully managed to have no more than two to three arms, with each arm producing only two clusters of grapes and up to ten leaves. This selective pruning allows the vines to concentrate their energy on fewer, higher-quality grapes, leading to an enhanced flavor profile and superior wine.

Once harvested, the grapes are rigorously tested for sugar and acidity levels to ensure they meet the desired standards

before being sent to Pulchella Winery for bottling and aging. Lopez’s journey into viticulture began with basic tasks such as weeding, but under the mentorship of Steve Lemley from Pulchella Winery, he has acquired a wealth of knowledge and skills that reflect his dedication to the craft.

The Roots of the Vineyard: A Historical Perspective

The vineyard’s history dates back to 1949, when it was originally planted in the Central Coast region of California by Richard Surrett, a pioneering figure in the field of viticulture. His innovative practices and deep understanding of grape growing laid the foundation for the vineyard’s success. Under his mentorship, Lemley and his partner Nate Hasper have carried forward the legacy of winemaking at College of the Canyons, ensuring that the principles of quality and care remain at the forefront of their operations.

In the late 1980s, Remo Belli acquired Surrett’s vineyard property and introduced further mentorship, particularly through vineyard manager Nick Valdez. This relationship proved instrumental for Hasper and Lemley, as they cultivated a personal friendship with Nick through their visits to his vineyard in Paso Robles. These connections emphasize the importance of relationships in the wine industry, where knowledge is often passed down through generations.

The current project at College of the Canyons highlights the collaboration between Remo Belli and the institution. Belli agreed to donate vines, provided that the vineyard was effectively managed and a suitable location was found. Once the location was secured, Lemley personally helped to relocate hundreds of grapevines. They used a machine to dig out the plants, root ball and all, then put them in a truck and transported them to the Valencia campus, where they had dug out the holes for the plants by hand. All of the plants were then put into the ground, ready for the next growing season. This partnership has laid the groundwork for a potential viticulture program, aimed at educating students on both the art and science of winemaking. The historical significance of the vineyard would add depth to its educational mission, connecting students with decades of viticultural expertise.

Hands-On Learning and Future Aspirations

Education remains a key focus of the vineyard’s mission. During discussions about the future of the wine education program, Lemley expressed a strong desire to expand the curriculum to include more in-depth studies of viticulture and winemaking. Currently, the program offers foundational knowledge, but the potential to enhance learning through practical, hands-on experiences is immense.

With a wine production facility located just three miles away, there are abundant opportunities to integrate real-world applications into the curriculum. This could allow students to engage directly with the winemaking process, whether they are pursuing a formal education or simply exploring winemaking as a hobby. Such initiatives could also encourage community involvement, drawing in local wine enthusiasts and aspiring vintners to participate in workshops and courses. Lopez’s enthusiasm for the vineyard parallels this educational mission. His commitment to managing the vines and ensuring a fruitful harvest is a testament to the hard work required in viticulture. He reflects on the challenges of the job, including the heartbreak of a failed crop, yet remains undeterred in his passion. In fact, he maintains a garden at home with grapevines, illustrating his deep connection to the craft and his desire to cultivate not just grapes, but also a love for winemaking.

Supporting Future Generations

The wine produced from the college’s vineyard plays a critical role in supporting educational initiatives. Proceeds from wine sales through Pulchella Winery are allocated to scholarship opportunities and various programs at the college, reinforcing the vineyard’s role as an educational and financial resource. This system not only helps sustain the vineyard but also ensures that students have access to vital resources for their academic and professional growth.

Lemley and his team envision a future where the vineyard becomes a hub of education and community engagement, offering workshops, tastings, and events that highlight the rich history and craftsmanship behind winemaking. By fostering connections between students, industry professionals, and the community, they aim to create a vibrant environment that nurtures the next generation of winemakers.

The Broader Impact: A Community Initiative

The vineyard at College of the Canyons is more than just a source of wine; it represents a community initiative that intertwines education, sustainability, and local culture. As the demand for organic and locally sourced products grows, the vineyard stands as a model of sustainable practices. Josue’s commitment to pesticide-free farming reflects a growing trend in the agricultural sector, where consumers increasingly seek transparency and sustainability in their food and drink sources.

Furthermore, the vineyard offers an opportunity for students to learn invaluable lessons in environmental stewardship. Understanding the complexities of grape growing—such as soil health, water management, and pest control—can equip them with the knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges of modern agriculture. This holistic approach to education aligns with broader trends in sustainability and responsible farming practices.

Conclusion: A Legacy in the Making

As the vineyard continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration, education, and passion for winemaking. With dedicated individuals like Josue Lopez and the guidance of experienced mentors like Steve Lemley and Nate Hasper, the vineyard at College of the Canyons not only cultivates grapes but also holds the potential to nurture future generations of viticulturists and winemakers.

The journey of the vineyard reflects a deep commitment to preserving the rich traditions of winemaking while embracing modern techniques. As they look to the future, the team is poised to expand their reach, ensuring that the vineyard remains a vibrant part of the College of the Canyons community and a beacon of knowledge in the world of viticulture. By intertwining education, mentorship, and sustainable practices, they are cultivating not only quality wine but also a legacy that will inspire and educate for years to come.

Focus on Faculty – Jeremy Patrich

Mr. Jeremy Patrich is a professor within the Geography program of the Earth and Space Sciences Department at College of the Canyons. He started at COC as a music major before one professor in the Geography department made him realize that there was something about the earth that called to him far more than all the music and melodies in the world. From COC, Jeremy transferred to California State University, Northridge, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and then went on to earn his bachelor’s in geology from the University of Florida. Along the way, he realized that his talents lay not only within teaching his students, but also in expanding their understanding of the world around them.

When he’s not teaching or leading field trips, Patrich is at home, working on cars or gardening. He also has a niche hobby of collecting Disney artwork. In fact, he loves Disney so much, that he also works part-time for Disney Studios doing visual merchandising, and has been there for over 20 years. When asked why he chose to give to the College of the Canyons Foundation, Jeremy said, “I acknowledge the privilege I have of being faculty here, and I wanted to pay it forward and invest in students.” Jeremy has been paying it forward now for nearly 2 years. He said that while there are many ways that the Foundation makes it easy to give, such as monthly donations, one-time donations, or payroll deduction, he chooses to use his credit card so that he also earns points.

research, mental health needs, or even put the money towards a vacation.

When Jeremy first started talking to the Foundation about creating his scholarship, he learned that it takes $10,000 to create an endowed scholarship, which means that the principal amount is invested and the scholarships are awarded annually based on the amount of interest the investment earns, and the scholarship continues to grow and support students in perpetuity. Jeremy knew that Disney has a program where they match charitable gifts made by its employees. So, Jeremy decided to give $5,000 of his own money, and Disney gave an additional $5,000, and his scholarship was endowed immediately.

Many employers, large and small, will match charitable contributions made by their employees. This allows companies to receive the tax deduction while also supporting non-profit organizations that their employees care about, which, in turn, improves morale. It also allows non-profit organizations to increase their revenue and be able to help more people.

The best part of my discipline is not in a class, but rather being able to take all the classroom info from the course and apply it on our field trips. We hike through mountains, rivers, lakes. We go out and explore nature.

There are several ways by which donors can see where their money is going. Jeremy stated that he receives a report annually that shows how much his endowment has grown and where the funds were allocated. In addition, the Foundation hosts an Annual Scholarship Celebration where donors can meet the recipients of their scholarships and see firsthand how their donation affected student’s lives.

The Jeremy Patrich Great Outdoors Educational Scholarship Endowment was created to get students outside. Any student who wants to get outside in some way is eligible to apply, and the funds can be spent in whatever way the student needs. For example, they might use it to pay for a class field trip (with brownie points if it’s one of Mr. Patrich’s famed field trips), hiking gear,

Jeremy has made it his mission to encourage all of his colleagues to donate to College of the Canyons Foundation. “As a culture, we think that to leave a legacy, you have to be dead. That is just not the case. You can leave a legacy now, and live to see the way your donation has impacted students.” He encourages his colleagues by saying “a little goes a long way” and anyone can donate in any way that they wish – to another person’s scholarship, to a program, create their own scholarship, or they can donate directly to the Foundation to be used for the greatest need.

If Jeremy has convinced you to invest in our students, please reach out to the College of the Canyons Foundation at our website canyons.edu/foundation, by email at cocfoundation@canyons.edu, or by phone at (661) 362-3434.

Kathleen Fortine’s Legacy Lives On

Daniel Chable, a student at College of the Canyons, has set his sights on a unique path—studying both music and history. His dream is to impart knowledge as a high school or college-level history teacher while simultaneously becoming a role model for fellow musicians with disabilities. Daniel’s story is a striking example of how passion and determination can fuel academic pursuits. The scholarship that has paved the way for Daniel’s academic journey is named after the late Kathleen Fortine, whose life was marked by remarkable achievements in the world of television and music. Kathleen began her educational journey at Pepperdine University after attending Hart High School. Her determination and talent led her to Cal State Long Beach, setting the stage for a career that would leave an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

Kathleen’s ascent in the television industry was nothing short of extraordinary. Starting as a page on the iconic show “WKRP in Cincinnati,” she worked her way up to become the music director for a number of television shows over the years. Her career reached new heights when she assumed the role of music director for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Kathleen’s stellar contributions were recognized with multiple Emmy nominations, including wins for her work on the Academy Awards and the Emmys television shows.

Tragedy struck when Kathleen Fortine passed away, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond her

professional achievements. In a heartwarming gesture, Jimmy Kimmel presented the Fortine family with $25,000 to honor Kathleen’s memory. The family, in turn, used this generous gift to create two endowed scholarships—the Kathleen Fortine Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Music and the Kathleen Fortine Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Television.

Daniel Chable expressed his gratitude to Kathleen’s family, Bruce Fortine and Gloria Mercado-Fortine, when he had the opportunity to meet with them. The scholarship, funded by Kathleen’s legacy, has played a pivotal role in Daniel’s academic success at the College of the Canyons. It is a poignant reminder of how acts of generosity can impact the lives of aspiring students, empowering them to pursue their dreams.

For those inspired by Daniel’s story and Kathleen’s legacy, there is an opportunity to contribute to the Kathleen Fortine Memorial Endowed Scholarships. Donations can be made to these scholarships, or individuals can explore the possibility of creating their own scholarships. The impact of such contributions goes beyond financial aid; it shapes the future of aspiring students like Daniel. Students can begin applying for scholarships in February 2025.

Give to an existing scholarship or create your own scholarship at College of the Canyons. Please contact the Foundation at 661-362-3434.
