Objectives: The main objective of this project is to raise awareness of the issue of pollution within our communities. This has been accomplished through the design tactics using provocative material, and guerilla marketing for the distribution of materials. The design has been created to be persuasive and informative for the viewer to increase awareness of pollution.

Target Audience: The target audience for this project would include a vast age range of viewers with the primary focus on those between 17 years to 40 years of age. This demographic will have the greater chance of understanding. Thus, the age group 17-40 yrs; will have the largest chance of immediate personal change that will have the longest term benefits for the environment. The economic circumstance of the audience that the project will reach will be that of the working class with a focus on those living within a city. The reasoning as most cities produce a higher amount of pollution due to the population density than those living in rural areas. The focus would be on all economic income levels of the audience as income is irrelevant when considering pollution.

Single Preference: The concept that I have chosen to design will focus on the topic of pollution in our water, air and ground. The reasoning why this topic was my final choice is that global pollution is a growing problem in our society today. I would like help increase awareness of pollution in order to reduce further pollution of our environment. I feel that many people lack the knowledge as to the long term effects of pollution to our planet. I would also like to focus on the topic of pollution as the ideas that I have created best suit my abilities to challenge myself to create a different style of advertisement through the use of pictures and type. Therefore, leaving a small environmental impact of my own during the progression of the project.

Facts Binge eating disorder affects women slightly more often than men–estimates indicate that about 60% of people struggling with binge eating disorder are female, 40% are male (Smith et al., 1998). People who struggle with binge eating disorder can be of normal or heavier than average weight. BED is often associated with symptoms of depression. People struggling with binge eating disorder often express distress, shame, and guilt over their eating behaviors.

Most people with binge eating disorder are overweight or obese, but the condition also occurs in individuals of normal weight. Sufferers have more health problems, insomnia, stress, and even more suicidal thoughts than people who do not have an eating disorder. Other common effects are anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. Approximately 24 million people in the U.S. struggle with an eating disorder. Almost 50 percent of these people also meet the criteria for depression.

People who do this are very hungry because they have been dieting or restricting their eating in some way. The binge is a response to that hunger. They over-eat to comfort themselves, to avoid uncomfortable situations, or to numb their feelings. The binge is an attempt to soothe themselves emotionally. Doctors do not know exactly what causes binge eating disorder.

Facts For adults, the recommended amount is 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. Children over 5 should engage in at least 60 minutes (1 hour) of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day. Short-term consequences of inactivity include weight gain; long-term consequences include diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Less fit persons have a 30-50 percent greater risk of developing high blood pressure. Twice as many adults in the United States are physically inactive than smoke cigarettes. People with sedentary lifestyles often develop conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), stroke, heart disease, cancers (particularly of the breasts and colon), type II diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.

Habits acquired in childhood often continue into adulthood, so children and adolescents who are overweight have a greater likelihood of being overweight or obese in adulthood. A survey conducted in 2004 found that the number of overweight and obese kids in NSW had risen from around 1 in 10 children in 1985 to 1 in 4 children in 2004.

Facts Pollution is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people. That’s comparable to global diseases like malaria and HIV. Over 1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. 5,000 people die each day due to dirty drinking water. 14 billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the ocean every year. Most of it is plastic.

Approximately 46% of the lakes in America are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life, or swimming. Americans make up an estimated 5% of the world’s population. However, the U.S. produces an estimated 30% of the world’s waste and uses 25% of the world’s resources. Each year 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste are dumped into U.S. water.

Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year. People who live in places with high levels of air pollutants have a 20% higher risk of death from lung cancer than people who live in less-polluted areas. The Mississippi River carries an estimated 1.5 million metric tons of nitrogen pollution into the Gulf of Mexico each year, creating a “dead zone” in the Gulf each summer about the size of New Jersey.

Low self-esteem is a thinking disorder in which an individual views him/herself as inadequate, unworthy, unlovable, and/or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view of self permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions and ongoing self-defeating behavior. Among high school students, 44 percent of girls and 15 percent of guys are attempting to lose weight. Over 70 percent of girls age 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities, such as attending school, when they feel bad about their looks. More than 40 percent of boys in middle school and high school regularly exercise with the goal of increasing muscle mass.

Teen girls that have a negative view of themselves are four times more likely to take part in activities with boys that they’ve ended up regretting later. The top wish among all teen girls is for their parents to communicate better with them. This includes frequent and more open conversations. 38 percent of boys in middle school and high school reported using protein supplements and nearly 6 percent admitted to experimenting with steroids. 7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don’t measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members.

About 20 percent of teens will experience depression before they reach adulthood.

Facts Every year, there are approximately 10 youth suicides for every 100,000 youth. Every day,there are approximately 11 youth suicides. Every 2 hours and 11 minites a person under the age of 25 completes suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens. Suicide is second leading cause of death in colleges. For every suicide completion, there are between 50 and 200 attempts.

Suicide had the same risk and protective factors as other problem behaviors, such as drugs, violence, and risky sexual activities. While a single suicide is a tragedy, it is estimated that for every adolescent who completes suicide, there are between 50 and 200 suicide attempts. A recent survey of high-school students found that almost 1 in 5 had seriously considered suicide; more than 1 in 6 had made plans to attempt suicide; and more than 1 in 12 had made a suicide attempt in the past year.

CDC Youth Risk Survey: 8.5% of students in grades 9-12 reported a suicide attempt in the past year. 25% of high-school students report suicide ideation. The suicide attempt rate is increasing for youths ages 10-14.

The approach I would take to create this design would be to use a propaganda styled theme advertisement. This would be accomplished by using a minimum amount of text yet having a high impact heading to draw attention to the ad title. The photos used will be of high impact photo. The program, Photoshop, will be used to combine photo and text. The purpose of this design will be focused on the viewer being able to retain the message of the design to further reflect or implement it into their own lifestyles. If the viewer continues to reflect upon the message the viewer is more than likely going to be sharing it with others, which is the way the message would spread most efficiently.

How would I create the design? The approach I would take in creating this design would be to mainly use photography and headlines for the main design. I would do my best to stage the settings of the photos needed for the project. Then use Photoshop for any editing that maybe required to retouch the photos. I would like the images to be very visually impacting to the viewer. I would also incorporate text pertaining to facts about the selfimage to be integrated into design.

Main Types of Pollution Facts Waste Pollution

Water Pollution

Over 250 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2007. Of that amount, just over one-third of it was recycled or composted, leaving more than 137 million tons discarded in landfills.

40% of America’s rivers are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life.

2.5 pounds of trash per person per day ended up in landfills. The recycling rate averaged 1.54 pounds per person, per day, based on EPA figures. These data show that much remains for making greater dents in landfill waste. The generation of electronic waste (e-waste) poses serious environmental risks due to the presence of toxic materials often found in these products. Computers, monitors and other electronic devices may contain contaminants such as lead, arsenic and cadmium. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) estimates that of the 2.2 million tons of e-waste generated in 2005, up to 1.8 million tons were disposed of in landfills. Other types of hazardous waste also threaten human and environmental health. The estimate of hazardous waste sites, combining existing sites and estimated rates of discovery, from 2004 to 2033 may reach up to 294,000 sites across the country with approximately $209 billion of associated clean-up costs. The US EPA has warned that sewage levels in rivers could be back to the super-polluted levels of the 1970s by the year 2016. In any given year, about 25% of beaches in the US are under advisories or are closed at least one time because of water pollution. Asian rivers are the most polluted in the world. They have three times as many bacteria from human waste as the global average and 20 times more lead than rivers in industrialized countries. The quality of water in Europe’s rivers and lakes used for swimming and water sports worsened between 2004 and 2005, with 10% of sites not meeting standards. Slovakia has the lowest compliance with EU guidelines for freshwater areas, with only 22.4% of bathing sites meeting the standards. Pollution of freshwater (drinking water) is a problem for about half of the world’s population. Each year there are about 250 million cases of water-related diseases, with roughly 5 to 10 million deaths. Diseases caused by the ingestion of water contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or parasites include:cholera,typhoid,schistosomiasis,dys entery and other diarrheal diseases. Each year, plastic waste in water and coastal areas kills up to:100,000 marine mammals,1 million sea birds, andcountless fish. The world’s seas are beset by a variety of water pollution problems. Air Pollution It is estimated that you breathe 20,000 liters of air each day. This means the more polluted the air is, the more we breathe into our lungs dangerous chemicals. Air can be polluted both indoors and outdoors. Tobacco and other kinds of smoking are examples of indoor air pollution. Sick Building Syndrome is a health condition related to pesticides, insecticides and chemicals we use at home and offices. In the great â&#x20AC;&#x153;Smog Disasterâ&#x20AC;? in London in 1952, four thousand people died in a few days due to the high concentrations of pollution. Air pollution affects kids more than adults because, for their body size, kids breathe more air and spend more time playing outside. More hazardous pollutants are discharged into the air each year than are released to surface water, ground water, and land, combined. Motor vehicles produce more air pollution than any other single human activity. One full commuter bus can mean 40 less cars going through your neighborhood. In America, vehicle exhaust contributes roughly 60% of all carbon monoxide emissions nationwide, and up to 95% in cities. Around 3 billion people cook and heat their homes using open fires and leaky stoves burning biomass (wood, animal dung and crop waste) and coal. Nearly 2 million people die prematurely from illness attributable to indoor air pollution from household solid fuel use. Nearly 50% of pneumonia deaths among children under five are due to particulate matter inhaled from indoor air pollution. More than 1 million people a year die from chronic obstructive respiratory disease (COPD) that develop due to exposure to such indoor air pollution.

Why the design worked This design was successful for many reasons. The design uses a headline that evokes thoughts and ideas about the main topic of pollution. It utilizes the image to its full potential to create the look of smog versus clean air creating a most realistic feel for the viewer. The fonts used are easy to read and are projected off the page to create visual interest in the design. The color of the text box makes the text stand out more for ease of readability yet blends into the image creating a better visual hierarchy for the main topic of the ad.

In most of the world, including North America, we do one of two things with our ordinary garbage: burn it or bury it. Neither one is good for us or for the environment. The bulk of the garbage ends up in a landfill. Landfill’s cause air, water, and soil pollution. If the modern society’s continue throwing away as much garbage as we are now, the future of the enviroment is at risk. This garbage pollution issue could be solved with simply community efforts. People need to reduce the amount garbage they create, meaning to fully use the item.

The font choices in the ad assist in the visual hierarchy which makes the content stand out on what its topic is. The headline also helps portray and create ideas for the reader about the topic pollution. The colors used in the design where specifically chosen as they assist in the amplifying the colors of what a park and landfill reflect.

Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses it. We rely on clean water to survive, yet right now we are heading towards a water crisis. Changing climate patterns are threatening lakes and rivers, and key sources that we tap for drinking water are being overdrawn or tainted with pollution. 40% of America’s rivers and 46% of America’s Lakes are too polluted for swimming, fishing and aquatic life. This crisis can start to be corrected by doing some simple tasks everyday, like ride your bike instead of driving, don’t litter your garbage, dispose of chemicals properly, and keep your environment clean.

The images used in the ad work well with the overall composition of the layout. The font choices aid in creating a visual interest invoking the reader to want to read the body text. The overall color choices worked well together to create superior visual hierarchy for the water bottle. Lastly, all the elements portrayed by the main topic of pollution pertain to water very easily.

Rationale

This advertisement is for the topic of air pollution in the city. The target audience will be that of the magazine readers that it is published in. The head line is near the top of the page to catch the reader attention quickly and to evoke thought on the topic of air pollution. The image is split in half between clear and blurry to portray the look of clean air versus smog filled air in the city. The viewer will be lead down the center of the page to the text box and its content. The text box stands out however it is also integrated into the design. The font color is white as it was best to make the information stand out from the image. The logo was placed in the bottom right corner as this will be the last element the reader will see before leaving the page. The logo placement will assist in leaving an impression on the reader as it is the final image seen by the viewer.

The audience that the ad will be viewed by is the readers of the magazines that it will be published in that take the time to express concern of our environment. The head line is placed near the top of the design to draw the readerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention when the page is first viewed. The divisional line between the images is meant to lead the viewer through the design to the text box. The white font color was chosen to make the text stand out from the page. The layout used depicts a slice of nature being removed to become a landfill. The logo was placed in the bottom right corner of the text box to leave the viewer an everlasting impression of the topic being portrayed in the design.

The viewerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes will then be drawn to the bottle that is divided into sections of clean and dirty water. This will promote the reader to understand the main topic of the ad. The text box stands out from the image to create interest for the viewer to read its content. Lastly the logo was placed in the bottom corner to leave the reader the ability to seek more information about the topic.

Overall Project Rationale This project was created to be used in a variety of magazines, as advertisements to communicate a message for an environmental awareness mock-organization. The purpose of the advertisements is to inform the audience of how pollution is affecting our society today. The main topic of pollution used in the 3 advertisements focused on the pollution of air, land, and water. These three topics are the biggest areas of environmental pollution in the western culture today. Throughout all three the ads with the main topics of pollution was consistent in meeting my goals on the design and how the information was conveyed. My first objective was to create the ad series in a form that gave the viewer a surprise or shock value by what they read in the advertisement. This was achieved through the use of facts that may not have been widely known, which I discovered during the research for the ads. Another goal was to use unique settings for the photography that would be used in the ads. This was accomplished by staging some settings and for others to be sought out, for example the dump. Another target that I had for the ads was how to gain the readers interests to read the information provided on the ad. This was accomplished by using a layout that would lead the viewer’s eyes through the design to the information provided on the advertisement. My primary objective for the ads was to portray that changes that need to happen in order that future generations do not end up on the polluted side of the ad. I believe that I accomplished this by showing a “dirty” side and a “clean” side in each ad portraying that this would be the future if no change occurs. As a graphic designer my goals are to continually challenge my abilities and expand my knowledge. I accomplished this by using adobe illustrator to create many different logos to portray the mock-organization. I utilized Adobe Photoshop to edit and create the unique photos in each of the ads and used Adobe InDesign to lay the headings and body text out. This project has tested my ability with the programs and forced me to experiment freely with new ideas and layouts that may not have been reality if this design was never created. The project exemplified all my expectations and exceeded all my intentions for the ads. This was true through the layouts created, images used, the text used and also the extensive research done for this project. I feel that these designs clearly portrayed the effects of pollution on the environment if no change occurs to the present status. The advertisements successfully meet all the criteria and goals set out for the projects and all of my goals have been accomplished through the creation of the pollution ads focusing on air, land and water.
