The Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year 2010 title was recently presented to Erik Lorincz from The Connaught Bar at The Connaught, London. After a year long global challenge which saw 9,000 bartenders from around the globe shake, stir and pour their way through national heats, just 24 of the most talented and inspirational bartenders remained to go head to head over four days of World Class challenges at the final. Erik claimed the overall title after impressing the most recognised names in the business - Dale DeGroff, Salvatore Calabrese, Peter Dorelli, Gary Regan, Alberto Soria and Hidetsugu Ueno. Winner Erik said, “This is a dream to win such a prestigious award, to be judged by some of my heroes such as Salvatore Calabrese and Dale DeGroff has really inspired me. Smithwick’s Celebrate 300 Years of Great Brewing Smithwick’s recently announced details of its new brewery tours and exhibition which were launched to commemorate 300 years of a great brewing tradition in Kilkenny. The new, fully guided brewery tour at St Francis Abbey Brewery take visitors on a walking tour of Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, offering a rare opportunity to savour the sights and aromas of the famous brewery. Highlights include a chance to see the Brewhouse where Smithwick’s is actually brewed and a visit to the stunning medieval St. Francis Abbey which sits on the site of the brewery and dates back to the 13th century. Following on from a stop at the St. Francis Abbey site, visitors drop in to the Tasting

Room, where Smithwick’s official tasters check and ensure the quality of every brew and it’s here that a short video explains the brewing process for Ireland’s favourite ale. Hello Night West Coast Cooler has experienced phenomenal sales growth recently, which is no doubt due mainly to its ‘Hello Night’ TV campaign. The campaign, which started in July, was aired on all national and satellite stations in conjunction with an outdoor campaign. The ad features three West Coast Cooler girls moving through the night sky in stunning dresses…and is proving really popular with its mainly female audience. West Coast Cooler is a refreshing alternative to beer or cider and at 4% volume its strength is similar to beer but lower than wine, making it extremely popular with the female consumer market. Since its launch in 1984 the brand has received a number of stylish makeovers. The most significant was in 2004, when a new bespoke bottle was designed for West Coast Cooler. In 2009 a new addition was added to the West Coast Cooler collection; West Coast Cooler Rosé, a refreshing wine cooler with berry & exotic fruit flavours.
Ultimate Whiskey Lovers’ Dream Prize Ivan Ivanov – a 28-year old lifeguard from Bulgaria - was chosen from finalists from nine countries as the winner of the Make it at Bushmills challenge at a gala dinner recently, in the village of Bushmills on Ireland’s north coast. The historic area has a history of whiskey production stretching back more than 400 years. Ivan will now spend 30 days working alongside Bushmills’ Master Distiller Colum Egan with the aim of becoming the first ever person outside the distillery to create their own blend of one of the world’s best-loved Irish whiskeys. The prize also includes a month’s luxury penthouse accommodation in Ireland and £5,000 spending money. The contestants included a head sommelier from a French three-star Michelin restaurant, a former Wall Street broker and Ireland’s Kevin O’Sullivan from Waterford. Following a series of mental, physical and skills-based challenges, the performance of the individual contenders was assessed by a judging panel that included Irish rugby legend, Keith Wood, Foy Vance, one of Ireland’s most respected singer-songwriters and Joel Harrison, a regular contributor to a number of leading whiskey publications.

he sun was shining for the guests at the West Coast Wines tasting event at Il Segreto on Merrion Row, Dublin on 17th August last. With two private terraces, and a beautifully mild evening, it was no surprise that most guests opted to enjoy a chilled Rosé from the Diemersdal vineyard in South Africa, one of the unique wines now available in Ireland from WestCoastWines.ie Hosts and business partners (as well as father and son) Gerry and Paul McSharry welcomed a select group of guests made up of family, friends, wine lovers, food writers and restaurateurs. The corkscrews were kept busy as each of the thirty diverse wines, ports and champagnes in the WestCoastWines.ie portfolio was put through its paces. The chefs at Il Segreto had designed a canapé selection to complement each of the pouring wines, which were greeted by the guests on arrival with much enthusiasm. Guests included Asheesh Dewan of the Ananda and Jaipur Restaurants, Paul Smith, newly appointed Manager at Fire Restaurant on Dawson Street, and Adrian Cummins, the CEO of the Restaurant Association of Ireland. Dublin City Sheriff, Brendan Walsh attending with his wife, Ruth Kenny Walsh, who was chatting with old friend, wine writer Myles McWeeney. from a month’s vacation in the US, was eager to catch up with Eoin Higgins and Ingmar Kiang who were in menu planning mode for their charity ‘Critics in the Kitchen’ event. Benoit Bringer opted to sample wines from the French vineyards only, while Roisin NiMhordha stuck with her new world favourites. West Coast Wines Ltd is the culmination of a life long passion for wine for father and son partners Gerry and Paul McSharry. some really excellent vineyards, and look forward to having the pick of future vintages!” There are nearly 30 wines in the West Coast Wines eclectic collection, and while it very much covers the basics, it also indulges the McSharry’s personal picks! Both enthuse about the Chateau D’Esclans Rosé which is priced at €16.52 a bottle, a perfect summer choice. In South Africa the pair work closely with the Diemersdal estate, offering a choice of six wines from their vines. A reputation for innovation is balanced by a six-generation heritage, making it a favourite for West Coast Wines, and one to watch. Vodka is by far the most popular spirit stocked in any bar making it the ideal spirit base for cocktails. With just a few liqueurs and juices a surprising variety of cocktails can be assembled, each with their own distinct taste.
A
lthough it is now one of the world’s most popular spirits, before the 1950’s vodka was relatively unknown outside of Europe. While it’s generally believed that vodka originated in Russia during the 14th century, its exact origins are unclear, however, it is widely accepted that it originated in the grain-growing region covering Poland, western Russia and the Ukraine. Vodka’s neutral flavour allows it to be mixed into a wide variety of drinks, often replacing gin in more traditional drinks, such as the martini. Whether you feel like getting a little flirtatious over a Flirtini or want to indulge your sweet tooth with a Chocolate Martini, vodka and flavoured vodkas are the ideal starting point. 10

Fill a martini glass with crushed ice and coat with absinthe and leave to one side. Shake the first 4 ingredients with ice; discard the ice from the absinthe soaked glass and strain the mixture into the glass. Garnish with some ground nutmeg and a cherry.

Lightly muddle the lemon juice, mint and sugar syrup. Add the crushed ice and vodka and churn. Serve in a Collins glass garnished with lemon wedge and sprig of mint.

Stir honey with Ketel One Vodka in a shaker until the honey dissolves. Add the other ingredients, shake with ice and strain into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice.

A taste of Mexico, in the heart of South Dublin
W
hile there’s no arguing that Dundrum Town Centre has a plethora of restaurants to suit the tastes of any diner, many would agree that – until now – it has been missing a Mexican ‘flavour.’ That’s all changed now that Cortina’s has opened in the Pembroke District (between Harvey Nics and Hamleys). Priding itself on being the only Mexican restaurant in South County Dublin, Cortina’s serve “classic Mexican cuisine, blending rich flavours, textures and traditions from ancient Aztec and Mayan foods such as chillies and corn with a unique blend of Spanish influences.” Cortina’s approach to cocktails is much the same as their approach to food – all margaritas are made with freshly squeezed limes and 100% pure tequila. All of the salsas, guacamole, sauces, tortillas, tortilla chips and desserts are freshly prepared every day on the premises. Each dish is made from scratch and uses authentic ingredients. Seating is available for 116 people including a cocktail bar area which would be perfect for a girls night out. 16

We recently caught up with restaurant owner Terry McVeigh who’s been working in the restaurant industry since the late 1980’s, firstly in London, followed by San Francisco, then Clare, and finally Dublin. Terry tells us that Cortina’s attracts “all types of diners, including lunch-time shoppers, local office workers, after work dinner and drinks, as well as the pre and post movie crowd.” Cortina’s aim is to create food that is a true homage to authentic Mexican cuisine, but tailored for an Irish palate! Terry says,
“by embracing both Mexican tradition and local tastes, Cortina’s offers classic food with its philosophy being fresh, local and sustainable.” The restaurant is really making a name for itself as a highly regarded cocktail bar and Terry informed us that their Silver Tequila is probably the most popular cocktail served at the bar. To make a Silver Tequila, mix 35.5ml tequila, 20ml triple sec and 70ml sweet and sour mix in a salted glass. Garnish with a lime slice and two short straws. English immigrant George Wyndham began his most important page in Australia’s winemaking history in 1830, when he planted his first vineyard at Dalwood along the banks of the Hunter River. Vineyard Manager Robert “Fred” Strachan and his team use many “small vineyard” techniques that are more common in a boutique winery, such as detailed pruning, canopy management and crop thinning, for improved flavour intensity. This detailed vine husbandry enables the creation of micro-climates within the blocks suited to the needs of each of the different grape varieties. Winemaker Matt Pick explains, “It’s in the vineyard where the winemaking process begins. Peter Lehmann The Barossa is Australia’s most influential and internationally recognised wine region, but Peter Lehmann Wines has never ridden on the coat tails of that reputation. ew York, New York, so good they named it twice. So the song goes, anyway. The truth of the matter is that New York is THE best place for eating out, meeting friends, shopping, and most definitely, drinking. We’re big fans of Building on Bond, Brooklyn’s newest – and hottest – spot. BoB – as it’s now known – is tucked away between Pacific Street and Atlantic Avenue; walk past fast enough and chances are you’ll miss it. The bar – which is decked out in a mish-mash of comfortable, yet eclectic, styles – might look like it’s been around for ages but it’s definitely a new addition to the neighbourhood. There’s lots of wood to be found; in the

seats, the panels, the bar etc, and while everything is mismatched and scattered, the overall look comes together, and never becomes confusing. Owner Phil Morgan has his finger on the pulse when it comes to ambience and customer satisfaction; the atmosphere is laid back and projects a chill out vibe, while working customers are kept satisfied with free wifi, and the staff don’t seem overly concerned how long you work away on your laptop – which is always good to know. The food is a treat and definitely worth the price of lunch, we road tested the turkey club (proper turkey, we were
pleased to note), the veggie burger (which also got the thumbs up) and, because our portions were so large, we opted to share the chocolate banana pancakes for afters, which were to die for. All in all, we Y Building on Bond. Ps. A special mention must go to the wait staff at Building on Bond, if Irish pubs are interested in looking to their counterparts across the pond they would do well to look here first, these guys are friendly, helpful, efficient, and went out of their way to ensure we had the best possible time. International Beer Festival The people who brought you the Donegal Town Summer festival are bringing you yet another bumper festival weekend in Donegal town on 17th, 18th & 19th of September. Free open air concerts on the Diamond will see Europe’s most famous U2 tribute band Rattle & Hum play in Donegal town for the first time ever supported by hugely popular cover band, Big Generator. On Friday night the town will be treated to Ireland’s best up and coming music act, The Codes, with Bagatelle finishing off the music fest at 6pm on Sunday. It’s the second year running for what has turned out to be a huge attraction in the North West, which takes its lead from the largest beer festival in the world, Oktoberfest in

Temple House Festival Taking place from 10th-12th September, the Tennent’s sponsored Temple House Music & Arts festival is an eclectic micro music festival which promises a little something extra for everyone.
