Welcome to InWicklow Magazine The rest of the world might still be muttering about an economic downturn but that doesn’t seem to be the case in Wicklow Town, as we discovered much to our delight over the last couple of weeks. Wicklow Town is such a busy place that we decided to focus on this beautiful spot for the month of July; everything from the harbour and local attractions to busy shops and its thriving nightlife. For an insight into this bustling community go straight to pg5. Meanwhile, summer is finally here which means the sales are on! There’s great bargains to be had in the many clothing and accessory shops throughout Wicklow, which is great news if you’ve had your eye on something for the past while. Dressing the kids also couldn’t be easier during the sales and we’ve some cool looks for pre-teens in this issue. Don’t forget to pick up your free copy of In Wicklow, each month! Written by locals for locals, InWicklow magazine is distributed to homes and businesses in the greater Wicklow area each month. Showcasing some of the finest gardens in the Count - from vast country estates to small cottage gardens - the Festival runs right through the summer and is an ideal event for gardening enthusiasts. Each garden has its own unique style and design, including Robinsonian, walled, formal, Victorian and modern, to name but a few. This year’s gardens include Festina Lente, Shekina Sculpture Garden, Powerscourt Gardens, Mount Usher, Villa Mimosa, Knockmore Garden and the festival’s newest garden, Rosemount in Enniskerry.

Beside the

The words ‘seaside resort’ conjure up a little childhood magic in us all; of sandy beaches and harbour boats, and long walks at the end of the day, finished off with a much-needed ice cream. Wicklow Town – which is all these things – overlooks one of Ireland’s finest bays and boasts a beautiful harbour with picture-perfect boats, bobbing up and down. Wicklow Town nightlife is also a joy, with pubs and restaurants to suit every taste, and family-run hotels and cosy little b&b’s offering top class accommodation. There really is something for everyone here, there are shops to suit both the budget conscious as well as the more discerning shopper, and there’s always a café serving delicious, home-baked treats at the end of a long, fun-filled day. The Black Castle Overlooking the sea, on the eastern side of Wicklow Town, the Black Castle is an Anglo-Norman stone fortress that dates from 1176. Although not much is left of the castle it’s a fine spot to watch activity in the harbour below, or to view the beautiful coastline.

Wicklow’s Historic Gaol This is truly one of Ireland’s most impressively interactive experiences. Once through the Gates of Hell – as the prison was known - visitors cannot help but be transported back in time to one of the cruelest and most historically shameful places in Ireland. Built in 1702 and finally closed in 1924, Wicklow Gaol has a long history of shady doings. The gaol housed thousands of prisoners during the Great Famine, the 1798 Rebellion and the War of Independence. The gaol tours are - quite simply – phenomenal and the fact that the gaol is known as one of the most haunted places in Ireland really adds to the experience! For a truly terrifying experience try one of the night tours (for adults only), if you’re brave enough, of course. The Paranormal Investigations are also fantastic fun. With a craft shop, a picnic area and a restaurant all onsite, this is a worthy family day trip. A Hero’s Death Born in Ballymanus in 1775, Billy Byrne initially served in the County Wicklow Yeommanry although was quick to take the oath of the United Irish in 1798. His role in the Battle of Arklow showed a young and courageous man with strong nationalist beliefs. Throughout the month of June, 1798, Billy was part of the campaign of the North Wexford Army of United Irishmen. He was later arrested in Dublin and brought to Wicklow Gaol where he was convicted on charges of being a ‘rebel Captain and Principle Leader’. The accused was allowed no defence and had no knowledge of the charges until just before the trial. William ‘Billy’ Byrne was hanged to death in Gallows Lane on 26th September, 1799. His monument stands in Wicklow’s Town Square. Dining & Drinking Wicklow Town is most certainly a gastronomer’s delight with

Aside from sailing, the harbour in Wicklow Town is a beautiful spot for a walk, or just to watch the day go by. Michael Dwyer Born in 1772 in Camara, County Wicklow, Michael Dwyer was a muchloved leader of the 1798 rebellion. Dwyer joined the Society of United Irishmen and fought with the rebels under General Joseph Holt in battles at Vinegar Hill, Hacketstown and Arklow. He withdrew to the safety of the Wicklow Mountains in July of 1798 following the defeat of the midlands

campaign. Dwyer was in contact with Robert Emmet regarding his revolt but was reluctant to commit his followers to a march to Dublin unless the rebellion showed some success. The subsequent failure of Emmet’s rising led to renewed attempts to wipe out Dwyer’s forces through methods such as severely punishing Dwyer sympathisers and offering huge rewards for information on his whereabouts. Dwyer was promised safe passage to America in 1803 however his deal was reneged on and he was held in Kilmainham Jail until 1805, when he was transported to Australia as an exile. yourtown at it!) it’s handy to know that Wicklow town is the most easterly point of Ireland, so, if you like the idea of watching the sunrise before anyone else, then you’re in the right town to do so. Festival Fun Wicklow is such a beautiful place that it isn’t hard to see why so many locals and visitors flock to the many festivals that take place, each year. From glorious gardens and yacht races to rock festivals and gourmet delights, Wicklow hosts so many festivals it’s hard to keep count of them all. One of the most enjoyable has to be the Wicklow Arts Festival which was launched this year by patron of the arts, Senator David Norris. Wicklow Town came alive for the festival, with music, art exhibitions, dance, crafts and family entertainment all taking place over four days. The Arts Trail was so popular this year that the huge submission of paintings turned the entire town into a gallery where artists gathered to sell their wares on railings around the town. Another firm favourite must be the Wicklow Outdoors Festival, a threeday event that takes place in the town to everyone’s delight. With activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, Nordic walking, cycling, orienteering, bird watching and horse riding on the agenda, it’s understandable why this is one of Wicklow’s most popular festivals. Local Attractions Among the many attractions that Wicklow Town has to offer a firm favourite has to be Dermot Kehoes Garden. Located over .75 acres in New Russian Village, Wicklow Town, the garden includes a raised bed of alpines, a double herbaceous border, a shaded area for woodland plants and a greenhouse. This pretty garden also has a waterfall and a pool and there are several mixed flowering beds. If you’re planning a visit it’s worthwhile purchasing some shrubs, you never know, Mr Kehoes ‘green fingers’ could rub off on you! Regatta

Wicklow The ‘oldest’ festival in Ireland shows all newcomers how it’s done!

1

IW: WHY DO YOU THINK THE WICKLOW REGATTA IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT EVENT IN WICKLOW’S SUMMER FESTIVITIES?

Wicklow Regatta Festival is now in its 132nd year and is the oldest festival in Ireland. As such, it is an integral part of Wicklow life. Every Wicklow resident, old and young, and all of the visitors who return year after year will have happy Regatta memories. In years gone by the Festival provided children to what was in effect their “holiday” and local businesses with a welcome boost to their trade. The current economic climate has resulted in the return of holidays at home for many families and local businesses in need of support from the local community. We, therefore, feel that support of the Regatta is now more important than ever.

IW: THERE’S SUCH A WIDE DIVERSITY OF EVENTS TAKING PLACE, HOW DO YOU RAISE MONEY AND DO FUNDRAISERS TAKE PLACE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

We’re lucky enough to receive funding from three different key areas including sponsorship from our main sponsor, Guinness. In addition to this, AWD (Arklow Waste Disposal) is sponsoring the Regatta Queen Ball and DPD Wicklow are sponsoring the Raft Race; The Regatta Programme through advertising and sales; and Fundraising. The shortfall in funding has to be made-up by fundraising events such as bag packing, Karaoke night, Open Mic night and a Jumble Sale, so we are

12

inWICKLOW

July 2010

very much reliant on the generosity of the people of Wicklow. On July 4th The Pink Ladiez (a local youth group) organised a sponsored walk/cycle on our behalf.

IW: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THIS YEAR’S REGATTA?

All the old favourites will be there – Golly Fishing, Fancy Dress, Treasure Hunts and of course the Skiff Racing on Bank holiday Monday. We are thrilled to have the raft race back courtesy of sponsorship from DPD Wicklow. We have 11 pubs entered into the Singing Pubs Competition with Chester Beatties, The Ashford House and The Woodpecker as new entrants this year! Among the new events this year will be a Gala Concert in Clermont College, Rathnew at 8pm on Thursday 29th July. The concert will feature Lindsey Aherne, soprano, Brian Furlong, baritone and Ross Scanlon, Tenor. Tickets for the event can be obtained from Earls newsagents, Earls Konica Photo Shop and from Tom Byrne at 087 2516940. The tickets cost €15.00 only. Finally, Wicklow’s famous Monkey Club will be hosting an all day concert on the Gig Rig for free.

IW: ARE THE EVENTS KEENLY PRICED AND INDEED, ARE ANY EVENTS FREE?

All of the children’s events run by Wicklow Regatta Committee are free. This would include the Kid’s Fun Day at the Black Castle, the Novelty Sports day and Teddy Bears Picnic. The

yourtown Battle of the Bands night and all of the outdoor concerts are also free.

IW: HOW IS THE REGATTA QUEEN CHOSEN?

There are 12 Regatta Queen entrants for 2010. The winner will be decided by a panel of 5 judges who will interview the contestants and then make their decision. The Judges are completely independent of the Regatta Committee and every effort is made to ensure a fair result. The Regatta Queen Ball at the Grand Hotel on Sunday 26th July is a highlight of the Festival with a live band for dancing and a cover charge of only €10. The Wicklow Regatta is fast approaching and The Grand Hotel is proud to be apart of it again. The Wicklow Regatta

starts on the 25th July with the Regatta Queen Ball. This annual event is great entertainment and as long as we can remember has been held in The Grand Hotel. The Singing Pubs is another great night for everyone - this takes place in Wynnes Bar on Monday the 26th. Hopefully it’ll help cure all the hangovers from the Sunday night! With singing, comedy, dancing and much more, our locals are involved in this event which makes it an extra special night. Events running in the Grand Hotel during the Wicklow Regatta – Young at Heart with music and entertainment on 27th July, Junior Stars in their Eyes 28th July, Beauty Night for all your beauty needs and catwalk tips 29th July, St Vincent De Paul music night with

local entertainment on the 30th July. Introducing for the first time to the Grand Hotel Mr. PJ Gallagher on the 30th July in Silvers Nightclub run by the Wicklow Comedy Club and to finish the Regatta the first annual Hoedown will be on the 31st July in the Abbey room and all Line dancers are welcome. The Grand Hotel are offering competitive rooms rates during the Regatta festival and our new Bar lunch menu will be available from 12.30 – 3.00pm, our new Al a Carte Wynnes menu will be available from 3.00pm9.30pm. Our Carvery will be available on Sunday from 12.30-4.30pm and live music in Wynnes bar on Sunday evenings.

IRELAND’S BIGGEST FREE

FAMILY BEACH PARTY! It’s easily understood why the Bray Summerfest is arguably one of Ireland’s most beloved festivals; with a programme of events that includes live music, arts arenas, fireworks, funfairs, garden parties, beach Shakespeare, street parties, Irish crafts, international crafts, food markets, airshows, beach sports and much, much more...

T

aking place over six weeks in July and August, the Bray Summerfest is actually one of the largest summer, beach-party festivals in Ireland. For most of us, thoughts of Bray bring back childhood memories of strolling on the prom, hiking up Bray Head or pleading with Mum or Dad for yet another candyfloss. It’s hard to believe, but not much has changed in this quant, picture-perfect seaside town over the years; it’s still a favourite of many Irish families, with the Summerfest being the highlight of many Irish calendars. With the news that many of us are opting to stay at home this year instead of shelling out for a holiday abroad, the Bray Summerfest is bound to draw thousands of visitors hoping for fun! This beach extravaganza boasts a packed programme which appeals to every age group with music that will no doubt rock the seafront’s iconic Victorian Bandstand. The Bandstand is reconstructed each year for the Summerfest into a festival stage for five nights of foot-stamping music – from rock and pop to reggae and gospel. Even better, all live music performances on the seafront are free and kindly sponosed by the Porterhouse Group and The Martello. The Airshow – which takes place on 25th July – promises the

best in Irish and international aerobatics as well as parachute and search and rescue displays and is definitely worth a day out. Once again, children play an integral role in the Summerfest with events that include puppet displays, fancy-dress dog shows, story-telling, Bounceworld and – a personal favourite – Disco Bambino.

One-to-watch this year at the Summerfest should be the Kilruddery Garden Party – a fully seated, ticketed concert performance in the stunning grounds of Killruddery House. Killruddery is home to the Earl and Countess of Meath and the scene for countless movies and TV series include The Tudors, Far and Away, and Excalibur. Previous acts from the Killruddery Garden Party include Mercury Prize Nominee Lisa Hannigan, David Kitt and Mundy. No doubt the line up for 2010 will be just as good. We recently caught up with Jason Cooke, the Summerfest PR and Marketing Director, who was eager to tell our readers about the Grand Pavilion, in association with Bray Arts, which will host the very best in visual and performing arts workshops and performances over five days from July 14th to 18th. Jason said, “This is a major new staging area for Bray Summerfest

and we’re really excited by the opportunity the Grand Pavilion presents us with to showcase the very best in local arts performers and groups. Another highlight will of course will be the Bray Summerfest Air Spectacular on July 25th when we’ll celebrate a Centenary of Irish Aviation – not only is this an important national event, it is now also the only major free airshow in Ireland.” “We have our largest-ever Bounceworld and Kidzone on the beach, a packed selection of arts workshops for youngsters, puppet shows and musical matinees, the arrival to Bray beach of Glenroe Farm On Tour, and an exciting Family Fun Day in Bray’s People’s Park with dog shows, face painting, a toy’s Swap Shop and much more.” With in excess of 100,00 visitors expected again this year, it really does sound like Bray is the place to be this month – miss it and we guarantee you’ll miss out!

Teen The Knife of Never Letting Go Patrick Ness The first in ‘The Chaos Walking Trilogy’, only one word can be used to describe this book – brilliant!

Fiction The Last Train from Liguria Christine Dwyer-Hickey In 1933, Bella Stuart leaves her quiet and sheltered London life to move to Italy to tutor Alec, the child of a beautiful Jewish heiress and an elderly Italian aristocrat. Living at the family’s summer home, Bella’s reserve softens as she comes to love her young charge, and she finds friendship with Edward, his enigmatic music teacher. But as the decade draws to an end and fascism tightens its grip on Europe, the fact that Alec is Jewish places his life in grave danger. Bella and Edward take the boy on a terrifying train journey out of Italy - one they believe they may not survive... From the bestselling Irish author, this is a poignant tale of consequences that spans from the 1930s to the 1990s. Last Train from Liguria takes us on a journey from claustrophobic Dublin and the tense formality of London, to the heat and bustle of the pre-war Italian Riviera. Thought provoking and extremely memorable, this is a very well written novel and we highly recommend it.

Prentisstown – the only town in the New World (or so Todd thinks). He is the last boy in the New World (or so he thinks). Like everyone in Prentisstown, he is afflicted with the ‘Noise’ – everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts in a constant, overwhelming, never-ending noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets. Or are there? Just one month away from becoming a man, Todd stumbles upon a spot of silence. Prentisstown has been lying to him. He has to run - and so starts the adventure. Fast-paced, exciting, terrifying and heart breaking, this is a must read for fantasy lovers (and haters) everywhere.

9-12 yrs Book Club Choice of the Month

Frozen in Time Ali Sparkes As the winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award 2010, you know this is going to be good, but how good?

The book begins in 2009, with Ben and Rachel bored and watching TV during another wet summer’s day. Not that exciting. Then the rain stops and they go out into the garden where they chance upon a container, the top of which has been exposed due to the recent heavy rain. Inside they find Polly and Freddy, from 1956, cryogenically frozen in time. Thinking they are still in 1956, Polly and Freddy are aghast at the modern world! Ben and Rachel must teach them (and quickly) the ways of 2009, before they are found out. This book is a funny mix of 1950s and present day all wrapped up in an exciting adventure. If you liked the Famous Five, you’ll love this.

He’s sporty; he’s musical; he’s great for sharing adventures; but he’s not the pink fluffy rabbit Tallulah wanted. Can she learn to love her pink fluffy armadillo just the way he is? A gorgeous heart warming story to read aloud to young children.

Who is the author of the Twilight saga? Correct answers will be put in a draw and the winner of the €50 book voucher for Bridge St Books will be notified by post. Flavours of

Wicklow The art of turning local produce into fine international dining

M

any of my recipes are influenced from my travels to Italy and especially to our favourite place - Sicily. It just seems to creep in when we compile new recipes and menus. It was in Sicily that we filmed Catherine’s Italian Kitchen with RTE. And soon to come to TV screens is also Catherine’s Roman Holiday. We’ve developed an organic vegetable and edible flower garden in the last few years - every now and then the sheep get in and eat the lettuce and I become like a mad woman, shouting at them from across the fields! But all in all, you have to see the funny side – sure, don’t I have the best flavoured lamb in Wicklow – pre-seasoned with rosemary, shallots and more! And they still left us with a decent selection to harvest for the guesthouse and cookery school for most of the year. The recipes I’ve included here today I demonstrated at the An Tairseach Ecology Centre for a foodie gathering, on a lovely summer’s evening recently.

ballyknockenhouse Pesto Spiral Pinwheels Ireland meets Italy at Ballyknocken Cookery School. This “savoury swissroll” can also be filled with sliced pancetta, chopped parsley and red pesto. Try adding thyme to the scone dough as well as 3 tbsp of grated parmesan. These are ideal for taking on picnics and for casual lunches. Serve them with an orange and rocket salad. Fresh is best for this recipe. Makes 18-20 pinwheels > 450g plain white flour > 1 tsp sugar > 1 level tsp bread soda > ½ tsp salt > 3 tbsp chopped fresh thyme (or parsley / chives)

Preheat oven to 230˚C /(200˚C fan) / Gas 8 Sieve all the dry ingredients. Mix in the fresh chopped thyme, olives and sundried tomatoes. Making a well in the centre, pour in most of the sour milk and mix to a soft dough. If more milk is needed, add now. When mixed, turn out on to a floured surface. Flatten slightly. Using your rolling pin, roll out in a rectangular shape to about 1cm in height. Spread the pesto over the top and roll the dough up (like a swiss roll). It is possible to bake the dough like this to form a spiral loaf. Otherwise, cut into slices of about 2cm/2 ½ cm. Lie flat on a floured baking tray and flatten slightly by hand. Bake for 10 - 15 minutes approximately. Baking time depends on the size of pinwheels cut. They should be firm to touch and golden brown in colour.

> 3 tbsp chopped black olives > 3 tbsp chopped sundried tomatoes > 350 – 420 ml approximately sour milk or buttermilk > Leftover jar pesto

Ballyknocken Walnut and Wicklow Blue Cheese Bruschetta Impress your friends at your next summer dinner party! Bruschetta is so versatile - great as a starter or a casual lunch. Use roasted hazelnuts or pistachio nuts instead of the walnuts. It’s always handy to have one or two good quality local artisan cheeses in the fridge and you couldn’t ask for better than John Hempenstal’s Wicklow Blue. Regarding the honey dressing, this can be stored in the fridge for a few days in a jar. Serves 4 > 1 large lemon > 4 teaspoons honey > Pinch of salt > Pinch of black pepper > ¾ cup olive oil > 8 (1 ½ cm thick) ciabatta, sliced diagonally > 1 large garlic clove, halved crosswise

Remove zest from lemons in large strips with vegetable peeler and cut any white pith from strips with a sharp knife. Cut enough zest into julienne strips to measure ¼ cup. Blanch zest in boiling water 1 minute, then drain in a sieve and plunge into a bowl of cold water to stop cooking. Drain and pat dry. Squeeze enough juice from lemons to measure 6 tablespoons. Whisk together lemon juice, honey, salt and pepper, then add ½ cup oil in a slow stream, whisking until emulsified. Prepare grill. Brush both sides of bread slices with remaining ¼ cup oil and season with salt and pepper. When the grill is hot, toast bread on lightly oiled grill rack, turning once, until golden, about 3 minutes total. Immediately rub 1 side of each slice with garlic.

> 250g salad leaves, including fresh garden herbs, if available

Meantime toast the walnut halves by dry pan-frying then. When the walnuts have cooled, break into smaller pieces.

> 180g Wicklow Blue Cheese, cubed into 1 cm pieces

Fry the pancetta and when cooled, cut into 1 cm pieces.

> 12 walnuts halves

Halve the tomatoes.

> 6-8 cherry tomatoes

Toss salad leaves with half of the lemon zest and enough dressing to coat, then season with salt and pepper.

> 4 slices of Pancetta

Ballyknocken House & Cookery School Glenealy, Co Wicklow info@thecookeryschool.ie www.thecookeryschool.ie

Put the toasts on salad plates and spoon some of the remaining dressing over each. Place some salad on top, then bruschetta, then salad and top with the blue cheese cubes. Sprinkle the pancetta and walnut pieces around the bruschetta / salad tower. Place 3 tomato halves around the plate. Then scatter the remaining lemon zest and droplets of the remaining salad dressing. Finally garnish with edible flowers.

Golf Course Review Glen Mill Golf Club, Timore, Newcastle, Co. Wicklow by Brian Cox, Author of Ryder Cup Ireland

T

here has been little or no rain in Ireland’s Sunny South East of late. That doesn’t mean we cannot find water as we did playing golf at Glen Mill earlier this month. Here water is regarded very much as a feature in this excellent par-three layout situated just a short journey off the N11 at Newcastle if you are coming from the Dublin direction. Approaching the course on the northbound dual carriageway take the exit for Newtownmountkennedy and again you are only minutes away from experiencing sheer golfing pleasure. In short, it is a course that is very accessible to enthusiasts of this Royal and Ancient game whether they are from Wicklow itself or the surrounding counties.

The Club The owner and staff are particularly proud of their course.A little irritant for Michael Byrne, owner of Glen Mill, and his Club House Receptionist, P.J. Morrissey, is that

the Golfing Union of Ireland (G.U.I.) doesn’t recognise any course under 4,000 yards. Glen Mill is open for play all year round. Players can rent clubs and trolleys. There are two buggies also for hire. There is a putting green, a little area to practise your chipping and a spacious golf net to put your various drills to the test. In addition, visitors enjoy adequate parking. After the round there are shower facilities and a small café for players to indulge in indoors, or alternatively they can relax out at the picnic area. Men’s and ladies’ societies are extremely popular at Glen Mill where they can avail of special rates throughout the golfing year. The Club societies also run charity events. Kate Byrne and Mairéad O’Reilly play in most of their society’s competitions but they also, along with their friends, help to organise two special events on a regular basis. We chatted outdoors over coffee about their charities. They have an annual ‘play in pink’ day which gets a huge response and generates much needed funds for breast cancer research. Another popular charity fundraiser is the competition for St Mary’s Special Needs Unit at St John of God’s in

Drumcar, Dunleer, County Louth. The men and women with their respective captains also organise individual competitions raising addional funds for worthy causes. Kate and Mairéad played ahead of us and were most complimentary after their game extolling the virtues of this lovely course.

golfreview watermill was discovered in the Glen. The mill dates back to 750 AD. It is from this historic site that the Glen Mill Golf Club draws both its name and logo. This is an extremely challenging course. Robert drew my attention to the importance of landing your tee shots on all greens otherwise you face ‘difficult up and downs’.

“Anyone who plays this gem will find it challenging but most enjoyable” Kate said. Mairéad added: “The owners of the course and entire management are terrific and very supportive of the players. We love being members here.” €630 is the annual membership fee which allows you to play as often as you like for the calendar year (from the 1st of March). Adult non-members pay a green fee of €12.50 per round during the week and €15 at weekends and on Bank Holidays. Most players tend to be men but some 30% of the overall membership is made up of women. There are young golfers too. They are very much encouraged here at Glen Mill. However, if you are a junior (under 16 and not a member of another club) you are obliged to play with an adult. The green fee for juniors is €10 per round during the week and €12.50 at weekends and on Bank Holidays. Both individual and group (10 or more) bookings can be made online at www.glenmillgolfclub. ie with 24-hours’ notice.

PGA professional Wicklow is famous for its beautiful scenic background of soft rolling hills, purple glens and silvery streams. Glen Mill is located with a similar backdrop of natural beauty right at its doorstep. I played a round with PGA Golf Coach, Robert Hogan. I was a little in awe of this talented player when I reminded myself of my own status as a player - me being a 19-handicap amateur. However, with the guidance and advice of the pro, who occasionally gives individual and group lessons at Glen Mill, I was

quickly put at ease and settled into the round nicely. Robert gave me many helpful tips and pointed out some basic faults in my swing that needed a little attention. I was particularly pleased that he did so early on in the round as my game perked up somewhat; so much so that I posed a minor threat to him during our little unofficial competition. I was chuffed at my own performance!

The course Michael Byrne is the proprietor of this little gem - which motorists can see from a bird’s eye view passing by and heading south on the N11.

One of our favourite holes is the index 4 134 yard 13th. The tee shot is played from an extremely elevated tee box which looks down on a small-sized green that is situated just feet over a horizontal, narrow tub of water. Your first task is to hit the tee shot over the water hazard. However, you have to take in the spectacled bunkers at the back of the small green in so doing. Thankfully, both Robert and I were undaunted by this signature hole, both scoring par threes! Aside from the 13th, there are also a number of other signature holes to be admired at Glen Mill. The index 9 7th hole requires a precise and accurate hit over another water hazard. Incidentally, the lower the index the more difficult the hole is. The 8th hole measures 188 yards and has a stroke index of 1. It is clearly the toughest hole on the course. The finishing hole is a challenging uphill 176-yard index 10 tee shot. The entire round took us about two and a half hours.

However, with the expansion of the N11 along came the bulldozers in recent years and he unfortunately lost the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 17th and 18th holes. This was a significant number of holes to be without but undaunted by the demands of economic progress the entire layout was redesigned by Andy into today’s enviable creation, which has, incidentally, the very best of greens. Andy had just finished the design for the new layout when ironically and sadly he passed away that same day. Glen Mill has a rich history associated with it. During the construction of the 15th green a horizontal wheeled

Gourmet Experience Located in a picturesque stone building in a cobbled lane just off the market place in scenic Rathdrum, Bates restaurant was originally opened as Bates Inn in 1785. After more than 200 hundred years of various uses, the inn was returned to its original purpose with the establishment of Bates restaurant in 2006. The restaurant can accommodate up to 50 diners and boasts a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Seasonal, local and artisan ingredients are used where possible and the team at Bates pride themselves on offering real food for real prices. The building has been used in many film sets so don’t be surprised if you notice the odd familiar face! Perfect for a couple of pre-dinner drinks, the Cartoon Inn is famed for the rich and humorous cartoons adorning the walls – a legacy from the now defunct Rathdrum International Cartoon Festival. Home of the Rathdrum Rugby Club, the Cartoon Inn is the perfect place to catch any of the sporting events, along with a creamy pint of Guinness or a crisp glass of wine. For bookings call 0404 29988. HAPPY

Campers Anyone with children understands the difficulty involved in keeping them occupied throughout the summer months. In fact, once they’ve had their much needed rest and have realised they don’t need to go back to school for 100 days….they’re looking for something to do! Gone are the days when the kids can be shown the back garden and ordered to occupy themselves from dusk til dawn. Now, it’s a never-ending round of excursions, beach days, museum trips and impromptu games in order to keep them happy. And why not!

ith more and more of us opting for a ‘staycation’ this year - taking our holidays at home as opposed to booking two weeks at a beach resort in Spain – it’s no wonder that mums and dads are feeling the pressure when it comes to entertaining the kiddies. Of course, there’s always the option of booking a week somewhere in Ireland, but a quick call round the family-friendly resort hotels of this island throws up figures in and around the region of €3,000 all-in for 2 adults and 4 children…not cheap, by anyone’s standards. It’s important to bear in mind however that this is the all-inclusive price, meaning that meals and the all-essential kids club is included. However, there are cheaper options, you just have to dig deep.

When we were kids (meaning myself, my brothers and sisters) our holidays consisted of a ‘family excursion ticket’, courtesy of Dublin Bus. Each morning, we’d get up at the crack of dawn, butter bread, cook a chicken and pack our buckets and spades. We’d then head off to one of Ireland’s beach destinations, returning home on the last bus! It was great craic, and I’ve tons of fun family memories from those summers. Wicklow has some of the most beautiful beaches in existence; miles and miles of sparkling blue water, gleaming sand and the unmistakable tune of the ice cream van. 99 anyone? If you’re hoping to actually get the children out from under your feet this summer, even for a week, then the summer camp is a fantastic option. Summer camps are springing up all over Ireland, with plenty to be found closer to home in Wicklow.

Ballyknocken Cookery School offer excellent summer camps where celebrity chef Cathereine Fulvio believes that children should be introduced to the joys of cooking from an early age. Herself a mother of two young children, Catherine and her team of expert tutors know how to make time in the kitchen fun with children through an exciting range of kids cookery classes.

just have the answer. The Park run events throughout summer, which focus on a particular element of nature, from flowers and birds to bugs and bats. Primary school children and their parents are invited to a mixed afternoon of nature-based activities, including art and nature walks.

Smaller children might appreciate something like the The Cave in Wicklow Town, which run summer camps for the 4-8 age group which are based on traditional fairytales, myths and legends from around the world. Each week culminates in a play or puppet show for parents which displays all the work the children have participated in. The Cave is a Steiner based childcare service that focuses on holistic care and education. Definitely worth a look.
