Science & Social Studies Science units are taught using hands-on, inquiry-based activities that are designed to build understanding of the content and foster the natural curiosity of elementary children. The purpose of the Social Studies program is to develop in students the ability to think critically about the human condition in order to make informed decisions that guide social action. Students are encouraged to reflect upon their own cultural identities as well as to recognize and respect cultural similarities and differences within a global perspective. Most of the units in Grade 1 integrate both Science and Social Studies standards. This allows the students to understand how science influences society as well as how society influences science. Listed below are the units we will cover during the year. The essential questions, derived from the standards, drive much of the discussion the students have around a given topic. My World (Social Studies): Our focus ESLR for this unit is Critical Thinkers and Problem Solvers. This unit focus the Social Studies topic the students know best - their own friends and families. We begin by examining how families are similar and different and follow up by exploring how our families influence us. We then move into a problemsolving mode to examine how we make and keep friends, as well as how we show we care for our family and friends.
Topic: We need to care for our family and friends. Essential Questions: How are our families similar and different? How do family traditions and roles influence us? How can we make and keep friends? How do we show we care for family and friends?
Blow, Winds, and Crack Your Cheeks (Science/Social Studies): Our focus ESLR for this unit is Life Long Reflective Learners. This unit introduces the students to meteorology, or the study of the atmosphere and weather. During the course of this unit we will learn how to make scientific observations, inferences, and explore the ways that scientists study the weather, as well as looking at how weather affects humans. Topic: Weather occurs naturally and affects our lives in many ways.
Essential Questions: What is weather? Where does weather come from? How do scientists gather and share information about weather? How does weather affect us?
Taking Care of Living Things (Science/Social Studies): Our focus ESLR for this unit is Socially Responsibly Global Citizen. This unit explores the features of both plants and animals. It also looks at the needs of plants and animals and how our actions either can positively or negatively affect living things. During the course of this unit, we will learn how to make scientific observations, inferences, classify living things, as well as exploring why humans need plants and animals to survive. Topic: Our actions affect living things. Essential Questions: What are the features of living things? What are the needs of living things? How do our actions affect living things? Why do we need to take care of living things? 3
ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM GUIDE - International School Saigon Pearl
On the Move (Science/Social Studies): Our Focus ESLR for this unit is Effective Communicator. This unit investigates the science of motion through the different kinds of transportation that humans use. In addition, it explores some of the reasons we use transportation and why it is important to us. In this unit, we will learn how to gather, record, and interpret data, execute scientific experiments, and draw conclusions from the results of those experiments. We will further explore the importance of transportation through analyzing how humans use transportation. Topic: People use transport to move themselves about. Essential Questions: What are the different types and purpose of transport? How do different types of transportation move? How do we stay safe while using transport? How do we use transportation to stay connected to our friends and family? Science All science units are taught using hands-on, inquiry activities that are designed to further the child’s understanding of the content and foster the natural curiosity of elementary children. Units studied will include:
Body Systems Plants and animals have structures for respiration, digestion, waste disposal and transport of materials.
Matter Elements and their combination account for all the varied types of matter in the world.
Landforms Landforms are the result of a combination of destructive forces, such as erosion, and constructive forces, such as deposition of sediments and the surface of the earth changes. Some changes are due to slow processes and other are due to rapid processes. Energy Human consumption of fossil fuels and non-replenishable sources of energy are still rising in spite of scientific knowledge of the negative impact of this. Humans have the knowledge to reverse this trend by reducing the use of these energy sources and increasing the use of and developing alternative sources of energy. Social Studies The purpose of the Social Studies program is to develop in students the ability to think critically about the human condition in order to make informed decisions that guide social action. Units studied will include:
Worlds Meet Reasons for European exploration of the western hemisphere (gold, alternate route to China, spices). Explorers interact with native populations. Three worlds interact, European, African and Native Americans.
America’s Colonial Period European Colonists from diverse backgrounds come to the Americas for a variety of reasons including: economic, political, religious, social, and cultural.
United States Revolution and the New Nation The colonists resist British Parliament’s revenue demands. Strategic events in the Revolutionary War (geography, battles, key figures, role of Africans, Native Americans, and women). The Declaration of Independence as key document of the American Revolution. The Development of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and individual liberties, the lack of inclusiveness (Africans, women, the poor)
Governments Comparing government plans, including the United States, for organizing government and safeguarding individual liberties. Central governments, states’ rights and individual freedoms. What are consequences in the absence of government? Physical Education Paramount to Physical Education at ISSP is promoting lifelong physical activity as fundamental to social, emotional and physical well-being. By exposing students to a wide variety of individual and collaborative physical activities, the ISSP Physical Education program offers students opportunities to develop interests and set personal goals, while experiencing inherent challenge and enjoyment.

ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM GUIDE - International School Saigon Pearl
Students will refine their sport skills through a variety of sport units such as football, soccer, floor hockey, dance, cooperative activities, fitness, and badminton. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, skill refinement, game strategies and rules. ISSP Physical Education Curriculum is based on the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) standards. Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Swimming Swimming focuses on water safety, stroke refinement, and creative play in the water. Music Students perform rhythmic, melodic and harmonic instrumental accompaniments including the use of alternate mallets. They read short melodic patterns on tuned instruments (B-A-G-E-D-C1-D1 on recorder, C-D-E-F-G-A-B on keyboard). They compose simple melodies using traditional and non-traditional notation and demonstrate three part rounds and partner songs. Art Students are introduced to more process-oriented drawing techniques including gestural charcoal drawing and one point perspective and use blending and shading to produce three dimensions. Students are using more complicated techniques including drawing transfers, printmaking registration and linoleum cutting, and graduated washes in watercolor. Students are integrating digital photography into their work in the form of collage. Students begin to identify processes and tools used to achieve certain results and can discriminate between elements and principles of design. Students are using historical references to interpret artists work and can distinguish between contemporary and traditional works. Students are using self-assessment and assessing their peers. Mandarin The students use Mandarin to communicate with others. They will understand the role Mandarin plays in relation to culture and the world. Students will make connections between the language and other subjects including geography, social studies, science and math. The language of real life (shopping, transportation) is emphasized. Students will learn about Chinese characters. They will use the basic greeting associated with Chinese New Year Gong Xi Fa Cai and learn to give Chinese New Year wishes. Host Country Studies The Vietnamese language program provides students with basic oral language skills to help them participate in simple conversations. Additionally, the program is created to provide the students fundamental knowledge of Vietnamese geography, art & culture, family and people, community, food & clothing, celebrations, animals & habitats, and economy. To help students reinforce the knowledge they learn in these areas, and enjoy learning through experience, field trips are organized throughout the school year. The program becomes increasingly challenging as the grade level increases.
