Principally Speaking, Dear ISSP Parents, The 2013-2014 school year has been quite a success. My sincere thanks to our students, staff, faculty, and parents for your numerous efforts and contributions that have so positively impacted our school over the last few months. I have enjoyed watching our students excel academically through our performing arts programs, and in numerous sports and extracurricular activities. This is truly a great little school that has a big heart! We will close our year with a farewell assembly on the last day of school at 8:30 to send well wishes to students and faculty who will be leaving us—please feel free to join us for this short assembly. I hope you have a lovely summer holiday and I look forward to seeing your child in 2014-2015.
Kính gửi quí phụ huynh cùng các em học sinh, Năm học 2013-2014 đã thành công. Tôi xin chân thành cám ơn các em học sinh, nhân viên, các giáo viên và các bậc phụ huynh về những nỗ lực và đóng góp của toàn thể mọi người, những nỗ lực và đóng góp đó đã có tác động rất tích cực cho thành công của Nhà trường trong một vài tháng cuối của năm học. Tôi đã rất thích thú khi được xem các học sinh của Nhà trường luôn xuất sắc trong học tập thông qua những chương trình biểu diễn nghệ thuật, trong những môn thể thao và những hoạt động ngoại khóa. Đây thực sự là một trường học nhỏ nhưng có một trái tim lớn. Năm học sẽ kết thúc với một buổi lễ chia tay vào ngày cuối cùng của năm học vào lúc 8:30 để gửi lời chúc tốt đẹp cho những học sinh và giáo viên sẽ rời Nhà trường vào năm học tới. Xin vui lòng cùng tham gia cùng Nhà trường trong buổi lễ này. Tôi hy vọng các em sẽ có một kỳ nghỉ hè thú vị và tôi mong được gặp lại các học sinh của Nhà trường trong năm học 2014-2015. Avoid the Summer Slide Studies show that children who do not read or have access to books during the summer lose up to 2 months of reading performance. Here are some suggestions for preventing this from happening: 1.Be sure your child reads at least 20 minutes a day. See www.reading-rewards.com for some good family incentives. 2. Set a good example by reading. 3. Read to and with your child. 4. Read for different purposes, such as cooking or playing the guitar. 5. Play games with words such as Scrabble, Boggle, Apples to Apples, and Scattergories. 6. If you have access to an iPad, there are tons of interactive books and apps that address phonics and early reading skills.

Raz-Kids Online Reading
Since we are not having summer school, the school has purchased a subscription to the online reading program Raz-kids.com for each child returning for the 2014-2015 school year. This is a great program that will really help build your child’s reading proficiency. Please encourage your child to spend 30 minutes to an hour each day on Raz-kids. com. Students should read the stories and answer the tests. Teachers have provided students with the login information.

NASA Astronaut visits Saigon Pearl It was a very exciting time at International School Saigon Pearl when we were visited by a real, live NASA astronaut from the United States! Dr. James Reilly has flown on 3 space missions, made 5 space walks and spent over 850 hours in space. Our parent company, the Cognita School Group flew Dr. Reilly into Vietnam to give the keynote graduation address at our sister school, ISHCMC – American Academy. They also asked Dr. Reilly to visit and give presentations to students at all three Cognita schools in Ho Chi Minh City, ISHCMC, ISHCMC – American Academy and International School Saigon Pearl. Saigon Pearl students had the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Dr. Reilly and be inspired by his amazing story as he told them, “to go beyond the horizon” and that “you are only limited by the horizon you set for yourself”. He toured our classrooms, gave presentations, took photos and signed autographs for our students. Our parents were also able to meet Dr. Reilly when he was the special surprise guest at the end of the year parent function held at the Caravelle Hotel. Students learned how collaboration is one of the most important 21st Century skill they will need to have to be successful in the modern world. Welcome Dr. James F. Reilly 30th May 2014 James Francis Reilly, II, Ph.D. (born March 18, 1954) is an American geologist and a former NASA astronaut who has flown on three space shuttle missions: STS-89, STS-104 and STS-117.
astronauts teamed up with Russian astronauts, called “cosmonauts”. His experience was that the astronauts and cosmonauts may have spoken different languages and been from different countries, but they worked together for a common purpose and mission and they are all still friends to this day. Students learned about daily life in space; showering, going to the bathroom, sleeping, what they do for entertainment, eating. All of these seemingly easy tasks on the Earth take additional thought while you are in space. He explained how the astronauts move around in zero gravity by using Newton’s Laws of Motion. Every time an astronaut has to move from one section of the station to another they must calculate the direction and push off with opposing force to move their body to the desired location. Students also learned that sleeping in space is easier than when you are on Earth. They can strap in any location; ceiling, wall, floor and not move for the entire duration of their rest. On Earth our muscles get tired of sleeping in one position and we wake up to turn over for more comfort. In zero gravity your muscles do not get tired as you are floating in space while you sleep. Therefore you will wake up in the exact same position as when you went to sleep. “I love my school! We get to do so many cool things that we would never get to do if I didn’t go here!” one grade 3 student shouted after meeting Dr. Reilly. “That is actually very true.” said Valerie Twomey, Director of Marketing and Admissions for our school. “We are finding out just how lucky we are to have the force of the Cognita School Group behind Saigon Pearl International School. We now have so many more resources that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. What other school do you know that would pay to fly in a real NASA astronaut simply to inspire their students? We have amazing students here at Saigon Pearl and they deserve the best. It is certainly nice to see them get it.” All of us at the International School Saigon Pearl would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our parent company, the Cognita School Group, for bringing Dr. Reilly to our school to meet our students and parents.
