Many students’ academic progress slides over the summer. Often a student will leave in June having progressed beautifully, only to return in August with a reduction in skill and content knowledge. Researchers at Columbia University noted that students can regress a full month in the area of literacy during the summer—even more if they are doing very little reading at home. I have seen this happen for our Sunbirds when reviewing our fall MAP scores, which show a fairly significant drop. It is very typical, but it doesn’t have to happen to your child! We are offering an exciting summer program that combines the best of both worlds—activities and events that are fun, coupled with academic enrichment that will ensure your child does not experience summer slide. I encourage parents to enroll in at least one session in order to maintain your child’s skills and be prepared for the upcoming school year. If this is not possible due to family plans, please ensure that your child has access to books or our online RAZkids program, and that they are reading every day throughout the summer.
Trình độ của nhiều học sinh sẽ bị sa sút sau kỳ nghỉ hè. Thông thường, học sinh khi kết thúc năm học vào tháng Sáu thì khi quay lại trường vào tháng Tám, kiến thức và kỹ năng của các em bị giảm sút rất nhiều. Các nhà nghiên cứu của trường Đại học Columbia lưu ý rằng học sinh có thể mất đi một tháng lượng kiến thức mà các em đã được học khi nghỉ hè, thậm chí là nhiều hơn nếu các em rất ít đọc sách tại nhà. Tôi đã nhận thấy điều này xảy ra đối với các em học sinh Sunbirds khi chúng tôi xem xét điểm số bài kiểm tra MAP vào mùa thu thể hiện kết quả bị giảm sút đáng kể. Đây là một hiện tượng điển hình nhưng điều này sẽ không xảy ra với con của quý vị phụ huynh! Nhà trường hiện đang cung cấp chương trình học hè thật sôi động với sự kết hợp tốt nhất của hai lĩnh vực: các hoạt động, sự kiện rất thú vị cùng với chương trình học thuật phong phú nhằm đảm bảo cho các em không bị mất kiến thức trong kỳ nghỉ hè. Nhà trường khuyến khích quý phụ huynh hãy cho các em tham gia chương trình hè ít nhất một kỳ để duy trì các kỹ năng của con và chuẩn bị cho năm học mới. Nếu gia đình quý vị có kế hoạch riêng và không thể cho con học hè, vui lòng đảm bảo rằng các em đọc sách hoặc học trực tuyến chương trình RAZkids và hãy cho các em đọc sách mỗi ngày trong suốt kỳ nghỉ hè.

Greeting from Mr. Steve Alexander
Greetings ISSP Parents, Students, and Staff! I am very pleased to be coming to ISSP to serve as your next Head of School. I am very enthusiastic about getting to know you and work with you to make the next year a successful school year. I want to thank Ms. Johnson and all the ISSP staff for the work they have accomplished in helping the school improve and grow. It is my desire to continue this to develop the reputation for ISSP as a high quality educational institution – one of the best in Vietnam. I would like to share with you my experience as an educator, both as a teacher and school administrator. I began my teaching career as a middle/ high school teacher at a Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in Northern Vermont in the U.S. Next I made a major change by working as a Grade 4-5 elementary school teacher in Burlington, Vermont for several years. My move to international education began in 1994 when I moved to the Vienna International School in Austria to teach Grade 5. Two years later I went to the American International School in Budapest, Hungary where I taught Math, Science, Social Studies and English to middle school students. During this time I completed an International Administration Program through the College of New Jersey. After my time in Budapest I started my career as a full time school administrator working as the Elementary School Principal at the Copenhagen International School in Denmark. My next position was as the Director of the Pechersk School International in Kiev, Ukraine where I stayed for six years. After my time in Kiev I moved to Vientiane, Laos to be the Director of the Vientiane International School for four years. My next Director’s position was at the Shenyang Pacific International Academy in Shenyang, China. Last year I served as the Interim Superintendent at the Khartoum American School in Sudan. I encourage everyone in the community to please stop by and visit with me after I arrive in Ho Chi Minh City sometime in late May. I know I will be busy, but it is very important that I take every opportunity possible to listen to you and build good relations with all in the ISSP community. I eagerly look forward to meeting with you and working with you.
