As some of you know, I am currently writing my dissertation in the area of Third Culture Kids (TCK’s). A TCK refers to a child who has spent a significant period of time during their developmental years in one or more countries geographically and culturally different from their countries of birth. A TCK’s culture, the third culture, is the sum of these values, beliefs and world views that a child experiences when moving from one country to another. Research has shown that TCK’s have some very distinct characteristics that have precipitated regardless of the host country in which they live. They are typically culturally sensitive, have higher degrees of empathy, and are very flexible in group settings. While arguably, many of our students are from Vietnam, my study has led me to notice these common trends describing TCK’s and our students at Saigon Pearl. Likewise the experiences that exist for a child that has left their home country are quite similar to the experiences children have attending a school that may have a different cultural emphasis than their family. At ISSP, we promote a school that would be typical for an American elementary school in order to prepare our students for attending school in a western country, and also to participate as a global citizen as adults. This school culture, while often distinctly different from home, will broaden the perspective of our youngsters and prepare them to be good leaders. Thank you parents, for emphasizing this expanded way of thinking. I am proud of the leadership displayed by our students and know they will be excellent global citizens of the future.
Như một số quý phụ huynh đã biết, tôi đang viết luận án về trẻ em của nền văn hoá thứ ba (TCK’s). TCK đề cập đến một đứa trẻ trưởng thành tại một hay nhiều quốc gia khác nhau về mặt địa lý và văn hoá so với quốc gia các em được sinh ra. Văn hoá thứ ba- TCK là sự tổng hợp của các giá trị, niềm tin và quan điểm của thế giới mà một đứa trẻ sẽ trải nghiệm khi di chuyển từ quốc gia này đến quốc gia khác. Nghiên cứu cho thấy rằng trẻ em trưởng thành ở nhiều nước khác nhau có rất nhiều điểm khác biệt được hội tụ, bất kể nước chủ nhà mà các em đang sống. Các em sẽ rất nhạy cảm về văn hoá, có mức độ đồng cảm cao hơn và rất linh hoạt trong việc thiết lập nhóm. Trong quá trình tranh luận, từ nhiều học sinh đến từ Việt Nam, tôi rút ra nhận định rằng có xu hướng chung giữa các em lớn lên ở những nước khác nhau và những học sinh tại trường Saigon Pearl. Tương tự như vậy, những kinh nghiệm của một đứa trẻ đã rời khỏi quê nhà thì khá giống với kinh nghiệm của đứa trẻ theo học tại một ngôi trường mà có thể nhấn mạnh nền văn hoá khác hơn gia đình các em. Tại ISSP, chúng tôi thúc đẩy việc hình thành trường Tiểu học điển hình Mỹ nhằm chuẩn bị cho các em học sinh đi học tại một nước Tây phương, cũng như tham gia với tư cách là công dân toàn cầu khi các em lớn lên. Văn hoá của ngôi trường này, thông thường khác biệt rõ rệt so với quê hương của các em, sẽ mở rộng quan điểm của các bạn trẻ và chuẩn bị cho các em trở thành những nhà lãnh đạo tuyệt vời. Cảm ơn quý phụ huynh đã thật sự có cách suy nghĩ rộng mở về vấn đề này. Tôi rất tự hào về tính lãnh đạo của các em học sinh và tôi biết rằng các em sẽ trở thành những nhà lãnh đạo tuyệt vời trong tương lai.

Mommy & Me Mommy and Me hosted by ISSP every Thursday 9:30-10:30 is a huge success. We have averaged 12-18 children weekly. The moms get an opportunity to play with their children in a developmentally appropriate setting, whilst getting to meet other new moms. Group sessions are always fun with lots of songs, “the Wheels on the Bus is the most popular followed by a story. Please spread the word about this activity to other parents of little ones. All are welcome!
Chương trình Mommy & Me (Mẹ và Bé) Chương trình Mommy and Me được tổ chức vào thứ Năm hàng tuần, lúc 9:30-10:30 tại trường ISSP đã rất thành công. Trung bình có 12-18 bé tham dự hàng tuần. Đây là một dịp để các bà mẹ chơi đùa cùng với con trong môi trường được thết kế phù hợp cho sự phát triển của các bé, đồng thời chương trình này cũng nhận được sự hưởng ứng nhiệt tình từ các bà mẹ khác lần đầu tham gia. Hoạt động theo từng nhóm thật sự luôn thú vị với rất nhiều bài hát, ““the Wheels on the Bus” là một bài hát phổ biến nhất, sau đó là câu chuyện kể. Quý phụ huynh vui lòng giới thiệu về hoạt động này cho những phụ huynh khác có con cùng lứa tuổi. Trân trọng kính mời tất cả quý phụ huynh đến tham gia!

Teacher Stories February must be a special month for our ISSP. Many promising events are on the waiting list. One of the most important events is TET. What is TET? - TET, The word is an abbreviation of TET NHẤT, meaning the first day of spring between the harvest and planting time. It occurs on the first new moon of the lunar calendar, falling between January 19 and February 20 of the Western calendar. New Year is officially a three-day holiday, but in practice the celebrations often last up to a week. - TET, the time every people will be thinking of and actually celebrating the holiday with their families. - TET is also the time of color. The streets are filled with flowers, especially branches of the apricot - Tet apricot flowers are yellow in the south and rose – colored in the north. Miniature orange bushes are pruned so that they bear fruit just at TET. - TET is everybody’s birthday; on this day everyone becomes one year older. - TET is time for long live culture valid. At TET, children receive gifts or lucky money wrapped in red paper. Candies such as lotus seeds and sugared winter melons are popular. The first visitor of the New Year to enter the house brings with him good or bad luck. A common practice is to invite a respected person to visit at that time so that this turn of luck is not left to fate. Debts are also repaid at Tet. The festive air permeates every available space. Now, at ISSP, teachers and students in every grade have been making effort for a wonderful performance since right after the winter break. Parents, we are looking forward to showing you our love gift on TET FESTIVAL – February 11th, 2015. Our performance includes: Part 1: ECE performance Part 2: Primary performance: Grade 1: Flower fashion show Grade 2: Tet song : EM CHÚC XUÂN Grade 3: Lion dance + traditional dance + Tet song Grade 4: Tet song Grade 5: First time at ISSP, Dragon dance. Kính gửi Quý phụ huynh, Tháng Hai là khoảng thời gian đặc biệt với rất nhiều sự kiện quan trọng đang chờ đón. Một trong những sự kiện quan trọng đó là Tết. Tết là gì? - Tết là từ viết tắt của từ “Tết Nhất” – ngày đầu tiên của mùa xuân, vào khoảng giữa thời kỳ thu hoạch và trồng trọt. Tết bắt đầu vào ngày đầu tiên của Âm lịch, thời gian thường rơi vào khoảng ngày 19 tháng Giêng đến ngày 20 tháng 2 dương lịch. Ngày Tết chính thức chỉ có 3 ngày, nhưng trên thực tế, mọi người thường “ăn Tết’ gần một tuần. - TẾT là lúc để tất cả mọi người nghĩ đến gia đình và sum họp với tất cả các thành viên trong gia đình . - Tết cũng là thời điểm của sắc màu lên ngôi. Mọi con đường được tô điểm bởi sắc màu hoa Tết . Sắc vàng của hoa mai – một loại hoa đặc trưng của miền Nam; sắc đỏ với hoa đào – loại hoa đặc trưng trong ngày Tết ở miền Bắc, sắc cam từ những cành tắc được uốn ghép, được chăm bón cẩn thận chỉ để đơm trái vào đúng dịp Tết về. - Tết cũng là sinh nhật của tất cả mọi người. Vào dịp Tết, ai ai cũng lớn thêm một tuổi. - Tết cũng là thời khắc của các giá trị văn hoá lâu dài. Vào ngày Tết, trẻ nhỏ hân hoan được nhận những bao lì xì đo đỏ. Những gói mứt sen, mứt bí thân quen xuất hiện ở mọi góc nhà. Người Việt Nam tin rằng vị khách đầu tiên của gia đình trong ngày đầu năm sẽ mang theo những may mắn hay điềm xui của mình đến cho gia chủ trong suốt nguyên năm. Mọi khoản nợ được thanh toán trước thềm năm mới. Không khí Tết tràn lan khắp mọi nơi. Tại trường ISSP, giáo viên và các em học sinh đã và đang nỗ lực hết mình để chuẩn bị những phần biểu diễn tuyệt vời ngay từ sau kì nghỉ mùa đông. Các em học sinh rất mong đợi để gửi đến quý phụ huynh món quà yêu thương của các em vào chương trình Tết năm nay. Chương trình sẽ diễn ra tại trường ISSP ngày 11 tháng 2 năm 2015. Teacher Stories IT Computer Lab News We have recently finished our winter MAP testing week. Students in grades K-5 completed both math and reading tests and the results of those tests are now available to teachers as they work with students to refocus and strengthen their skills. MAP test reveals skills and competency on both the individual level and on the broader school and classroom level. In other areas, students in grades 2-5 have been busy learning to write code. Writing code, also known as programming, serves a variety of important agendas in our students’ academic careers. Not only is programming part of the quickly blossoming technology field, but the logic skills used in writing code are easily transferred to other subjects and to making decisions and solving problems in general. Once again all grades were practicing their writing skills in the computer lab. Kindergartners were practicing writing their sight words and both first and second graders have been making blog entries in Firefly. Third graders are researching information for reports. Fourth and Fifth graders have developed strong touch typing skills and these skills are put to use in sharing information gathered about topics such as Every Day Life in the Middle Ages (grade 5) or what the experts say the future will bring us (grade 4) Some of your younger students made some beautiful art using a web site called: “www.thisissand.com� With This is Sand, students can pile sand in a digital sense on the screen. The number of colors is infinite and the computer can be set to automatically transition from one color to another. Students of all ages (adults too!) have found this to be a fascinating exploration in self-expression.
Chúng ta vừa hoàn tất tuần lễ kiểm tra MAP mùa đông. Học sinh từ lớp Lá đến lớp 5 đã hoàn thành các bài kiểm tra toán và tập đọc, kết quả các bài kiểm tra cũng đã có để giáo viên làm việc với các em học sinh trong việc chuẩn hoá, cũng cố các kỹ năng. Bài kiểm tra MAP cho biết trình độ và năng lực cá nhân so với trình độ lớp và trường. Học sinh lớp 2 và lớp 5 đang rất bận với bài học viết mã code. Viết mã code, được hiểu như lập trình, chiếm phần quan trọng trong chương trình học của các em. Lập trình không những bùng nỗ trong lĩnh vực công nghệ mà còn các kỹ năng tư duy logic được sử dụng khi lập trình cũng được ứng dụng trong các môn học khác và giúp đưa ra quyết định hoặc giải quyết vấn đề nói theo một cách tổng thể. Một lần nữa, tất cả các cấp lớp đang thực tập kỹ năng viết trên máy tính tại phòng lab. Học sinh Lớp Lá đã bắt đầu viết theo các từ mẫu hiện trên máy trong khi lớp một và lớp hai bắt đầu viết blog trên Firefly. Lớp 3 đang tìm tài liệu để làm báo cáo. Lớp 4 và 5 phát triển kỹ năng đánh máy và sử dụng các kỹ năng này để chia sẻ thông tin về các chủ đề như Cuộc Sống Thường Nhật vào thời Trung Cổ (lớp 5) hoặc các chuyên gia nói gì về tương lai mang đến cho chúng ta (lớp 4). Một vài học sinh lớp nhỏ đã làm các bức tranh xinh đẹp qua website “www.thisissand.com” . Với This is Sand, học sinh có thể trộn cát trên màn hình. Có vô số màu và máy tính có thể tự động chuyển từ màu này sang màu khác. Học sinh các cấp lớp (người lớn cũng vậy!) nhận thấy đây là khám phá thú vị để thể hiện bản thân.
Teacher Stories Everyday Sensory Play in Preschool In the ISSP preschool classroom sensory activities are incorporated into the weekly themes. In the past the students learned about community helpers including firefighters, police officers, doctors and dentists using lots of fun sensory based activities. Sensory play includes activity that allows a learner to uses their senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Sensory based activities allow a young learner to explore and discovery naturally and to help them develop the scientific process while playing and creating. Sensory play helps children to grow cognitively, linguistically, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively. The students in ISSP preschool program love to incorporate sensory play into their preschool day. While learning about firefighters, the students explored some fire coloured paints which they then sprayed down with blue watercolour. They had a lot of fun investigating fingerprints when learning about police officers and discovered colour mixing using syringes and watercolour paints when learning about doctors. The students also had an opportunity to play around with some giant teeth (made from the bottom halves of water bottles) and brushed off yellow and brown paint stains using a tooth brush and tooth paste to learn more about dentists in an engaging sensory based activity. The little ones have a lot of fun with sensory play and other themed activities that allow them to explore concept and facilitate them to build their own knowledge and understanding. Hoạt động vui chơi hàng ngày dựa trên giác quan tại lớp Mầm Tại lớp Mầm của trường ISSP, các hoạt động về giác quan được kết hợp với chủ đề hàng tuần. Trước đây, các em được học về những người giúp đỡ cộng đồng bao gồm nhân viên cứu hoả, cảnh sát, bác sĩ, nha sĩ với nhiều hoạt động vui chơi thú vị. Vui chơi dựa trên giác quan bao gồm các hoạt động cho phép người học sử dụng các giác quan như xúc giác, khứu giác, vị giác, thị giác và thính giác. Các hoạt động giác quan cho phép các em khám phá tự nhiên cũng như giúp các em phát triển các quy trình khoa học thông qua hoạt động vui chơi sáng tạo. Vui chơi dựa trên giác quan giúp các em phát triển về mặt nhận thức, ngôn ngữ, xã hội, tình cảm, thể chất và sáng tạo. Các em lớp Mầm của trường ISSP rất yêu thích hoạt động vui chơi dựa trên giác quan diễn ra hàng ngày tại lớp. Khi tìm hiểu về nhân viên cứu hoả, các em khám phá một số loại sơn màu lửa mà sau đó màu lửa sẽ bị phủ đi bằng sơn màu xanh của nước. Các em cảm thấy rất thú vị khi tham gia hoạt động điều tra dấu vân tay khi học về nhân viên cứu hoả và khám phá sử dụng ống tiêm để pha trộn màu sắc và sơn màu nước khi học về bác sĩ. Các em cũng có dịp chơi với những chiếc răng khổng lồ (được làm từ nữa đáy của chai nước), loại bỏ đi sơn màu vàng và màu nâu bằng cách sử dụng bàn chải đánh răng và kem đánh răng để giúp các em tìm hiểu hơn nữa về nha sĩ trong hoạt động vui chơi tuyệt vời dựa trên giác quan. Các em đã có nhiều niềm vui với hoạt động dựa trên giác quan và những hoạt động theo chủ đề khác nhau, cho phép các em khám phá các khái niệm và tạo điều kiện cho các em xây dựng kiến thức và sự hiểu biết của riêng mình. Bingo Night was a huge success with over 220 students, parents and grandparents attending. Mr. Bruce did a great job calling the numbers with the help from Mr. Zach and Mr. Linc. The prize baskets were amazing, thank you to all the families who contributed and to all our sponsors. Special thanks goes to our PTA President Jonathan, who with his team Thu, Calvin and Jan‌.. arranged many sponsors and gift for the evening. Without his input, the event would not have been such a success. Thank you!

Student Voices The Magical Story It was a wonderful morning in the kingdom of Kytopia. In Kytopia lives the prince named Ky. Ky is a prince/knight. He is a good looking, smart, caring, heroic and generous man. One day he woke up and heard Mr. Mark the evil wizard put a curse on Kytopia. Mr. Mark wears a dark cloak and holds a blue staff. When Ky heard the news, he immediately packed his things and ready to go to the tower of evil. First Ky came to Mystic Meadows to look for directions to the tower. Then he heard a sound in one of the rose bushes. He quickly got out his sword ready to fight whatever is behind the bus. Then came out two small boys. One was named Jim and the other is name Tim. Jim is a smart boy who wears green clothes. Tim is a strong boy who wears blue clothes. Ky asked them for directions to the tower of evil, so they lead him to the tower. When they got to the tower, Ky let Jim and Tim join the fight. He thinks Jim will tell him and Jim what to do in the fight. They came in the tower and up the stairs. On the last floor, they found the lair. In the lair they saw Mr. Mark working on a spell. Ky gave him two options; take the curse off of Kytopia or fight. Mr. Mark chose to fight thinking that he would definitely win. The fight was big and dangerous, but in the end Mr. Mark was wrong. Ky, Jim and Tim had won. Mr. Mark was sent to jail and Kytopia was back to normal. The End By Ky - Grade 4
The Lion and the Mouse
One day in Africa, there was a little mouse named Sarah. Sarah was sitting on a rock while a hungry owl spotted Sarah and chased her into the savanna. Sarah ran so fast that she didn’t even know that she was on a lion’s back. The massive lion was named Mark. Mark felt something itchy on his back. He took his hand slowly and slowly caught Sarah. He asked “What are you doing behind my back?” “Because an owl was chasing me and I thought you were a log.” Squeaked Sarah “Ok, since you accidentally went on my back because you were running for your life, I will let you go.” Replied Mark. Mark gently dropped Sarah and she ran back to her family. Meanwhile, when Sarah and Mark were still talking, two hunters came to the woods and were preparing a net trap to catch an African lion. When Sarah left, Mark decided to take a walk in the woods and when he got there. Mark accidentally tripped over a wire and WHOOOOOOSSSSSSHHHHHH. The net caught Mark up the tree. Mark was very scared so he roared, he roared so loud that Sarah heard him across the Savana and she quickly rushed into the woods and saw Mark hanging up a tree. She knew that the only people that can do this trap are hunters. So she quickly nibbled the rope and BOOOMMM. Mark fell down and Sarah and Mark escaped. “Thank you for rescuing me.” Said Mark. “You’re welcome” answered Sarah. And they all went back to their families and tell the story of how they met. Student Voices What Makes a Good Friend? Most people want good friends in their life. Many people think differently of hat character traits make up good friends. I think loyalty and honesty are two traits that make up a good friend. I think loyalty is a trait good friends should have. They will stand by you whenever and wherever you are. If you need help they will not leave you alone (that shows caring along loyalty). It shows they are caring and it makes you feel better to know you have a good friend. They will be with you through sad and hard times to make you feel better and safe. They will always stay as your friend and will not exclude you from a group or leave you out. Once I was bullied by someone my friend stopped the bully, she was standing next to me even if she could have ran away she choose not to. She was a loyal friend. Honesty is another trait a good friend should have. Your friend will never hide a secret from you or something they did wrong. You can always trust them without being unsure or having to find proof. You can also be informed the problem you could fix before it becomes a bigger problem. When I was 4 my friends and I were playing I took a rest and went outside the room then one of them broke a decoration, luckily I knew how to fix it. My friend told me what she did wrong. She was very honest and did not hide what she done wrong. The two character traits I recommend is loyalty and honesty. Then you can prove you are a good friend. I really hope everyone can be a good friend and also have a good friend. Bella The End By: Bella - Grade 4
What Makes a True Friend? I think a true friend need to have these two things. First one is always be there for their friend. Second is kindness for your friend. A true friend always needs to be there for his friends. Because maybe you can save someone if they in getting in trouble. Like bullying, you can save your friend form getting bullied. Also maybe share food with your friend if they are hungry. Or help your friend up or something like that if they are hurt. Kindness is also important in being a true friend. Like saying nice things if your friends are down. Like “try to do a better job next time”. Being gentler is also is also important. Like if playing, a true friend doesn’t normally play rough of you. If they do, they are not they are not a true friend because if you were someone’s friend, would you hurt them? I think a friend needs to be there for each other no matter what and needs to be kind. Because a friend can help you get away from getting bullied. Also kind friend can cheer you up if you have a bad grade or something. The End By Teddy - Grade 4
