This month brought a wonderful opportunity for our students’ artistic and musical talents to shine. I was so very proud of our Grade 1 and 2 Art and Music Show, as well as the talent that I see in the area of fine arts for our school as a whole. I know the trend is to see art and music as a fun activity that makes school more enjoyable, but the research is quite clear that the arts stimulate thinking that improves all other academic areas, and should be a serious contender for time in the school setting. Furthermore, the arts build a skill set that employers are seeing on the decline in new college graduates—creativity, collaboration, and the ability to problem solve. In fact, David Brooks of the New York Times, identified these skills as the very bedrock of maintaining a country’s economic competitiveness. He further articulated that this competiveness was also reliant on our ability to collaborate as teams to think innovatively with a fresh approach to solving complex issues. These are the skills that are developed through the arts, and clearly move them to a high priority at International School Saigon Pearl. As parents, I commend you for making the choice to attend an international school that focuses on developing well-rounded students that will have solid academic skills, but will also have the ability to maneuver with agility through uncharted waters of the future!!!

Với vai trò là phụ huynh, tôi chân thành khen ngợi quý vị đã lựa chọn để con em được học tại trường quốc tế tập trung vào việc phát triển toàn diện học sinh về kỹ năng học thuật vững chắc cũng như khả năng linh động qua việc thám hiểm nhiều “vùng biển” trong tương lai!!!

News from EE1 Nurturing Language and Literacy in the Early Years Strong language skills are essential for children’s success in school and life (Hart & Risley, 2003; Heath & Hogben, 2004; Jalongo 2008; Kalmar, 2008), and one of the best predictors of educational and life-skills competences is the level to which a child progresses in reading and writing (Neuman, Copple & Bredekamp, 2000). Here at ISSP, in the EE1 classroom, promoting language and literacy skills is one of the cornerstones of our every day learning experience. Each child is given the access to a variety of developmentally-appropriate books, allowed to freely explore writing and art tools, and encouraged to engage in activities and experiences that promote communication. What do we look for to see a child’s emerging language and literacy skills? Below are some questions we ask ourselves when observing a child. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Does he/she manipulate books? Does he/she look at and recognize books? Does he/she try to copy an action in a picture? Does he/she pretend to read or participate in the story telling? Does he/she engage in pretend or role play? Does he/she attempt to use writing and art materials?
We believe that by consistently exposing the youngest learners to language and literacy experiences, we are in effect, helping them become more competent later in life.

Student Lead Video This month we have had Jeff Nesmith (videographer) work with our Grade 4 & 5’s to make their own video about ISSP and why it is so special. The children loved working in front and behind the camera. They were so talented and really embraced the project. We look forward to seeing the end product. Thank you to all the students who participated.

News from KGE- Ms Rebecca Ms. Rebecca’s Class field trip to the zoo: Kindergarten has been studying habitats for several weeks now. What is the best way to finish our unit of study? Of course, a trip to the zoo! Here we could see lots of different animals from different habitat, as well as understand that a zoo is its own unique habitat. Also, zoos are fun and fascinating places to be. We had a great time learning and taking pictures of the animals for our class project.

Dĩ nhiên, đó là một chuyến dã ngoại đến sở thú! Ở đây chúng tôi có thể thấy rất nhiều động vật khác nhau từ những môi trường sống khác nhau, cũng như chúng ta hiểu rằng sở thú là một môi trường sống đặc biệt của riêng nó. Đồng thời, sở thú là nơi rất vui và thú vị để tham quan. Chúng tôi đã có một thời gian được học hỏi và chụp hình những con vật cho dự án của lớp chúng tôi.

Swim Team City Championships
City Championships B Pool Congratulations to the ISSP swim team for their amazing effort at City Championships this year! We placed 2nd overall, and secured five trophies for the school. Our school took home both individual awards for girls: Michelle Ngo took home the trophy for the highest scoring U9 girl, and Jackie Dinh took home the trophy for the highest scoring U11 girl. In addition to the 2nd place overall trophy, we also took home the trophy for the second highest scoring U9 girls and the second highest scoring U11 boys. Great job swim team!

The Importance of Play in Assimilating to a New ECE Experience There are three things that drive a child’s life: family, school, and play. Everyone loves to, and needs to, play. However, the common misconception is that everyone knows HOW to play. Play is the arena where a child can truly be a child and where imagination opens those invisible doors to indescribable growth and adventure. For young children entering the ISSP ECE program for the first time, the beginning of the year is a vital window of opportunity for evaluating a child’s level of social comfort and ability to play. How this is handled will have a direct effect on his or her ability to assimilate to the new environment. The mistaken presumption that is so often made is that all children KNOW how to play. Many adults take it for granted that, because all children love to play, that recess or play activities will provide the elixir for every child to feel more comfortable and relaxed and get over the fear or shyness. But, there are signs and reasons to the contrary that need to be recognized if we are to help these child gain the comfort for which we hope. Although safety remains the utmost priority during playtime, to simply stand around and monitor the children is not the best practice for optimizing the play experience recess offers. There are a number of reasons why a child is just sitting or wandering around by him or herself. The mistake is made by assuming that child is just shy and the belief is that he or she will be fine in time. It is at this time that such a child could greatly benefit from the metaphorical, if not literal, “push on the swing.” Some reasons for a child’s resistance to get involved may include: • Language barrier • Lack of previous exposure to interacting with other children • Separation anxiety with this being the first time away from parents • Lack of social interaction skills • He/she may only be used to “playing” with familiar adults • Severe shyness or fear For a teacher, the first few weeks of recess are vital for not only assessing all children’s ability to socialize, play, be creative, as well as his/her physical and emotional maturity, but it is also a wonderful opportunity to bond with the children on their terms and in their arena of comfort. This relationship building will provide untold benefits toward stronger classroom management down the road. The number one thing in maximizing the recess opportunity at the beginning of the year is to be willing to engage with the children. Be willing to role play within the context of what the children are doing. Every year within the first few days, I will read “The Three Little Pigs.” It then becomes our ‘thing’ for many weeks after where I pretend to be the “Big Bad Wolf” and will try to catch the little pigs, but of course, never can. They love the chasing and running to try and get away. Other times, if a child appears to prefer sitting on a tricycle wandering around alone, I will call for him or her as a “Xe om” and try to get them to give me a ride. Within a couple days, they are riding away from me with a smile on their face while I chase them. Be willing to join the pretend picnic, play tag, ask questions and be willing to play a character that fits into whatever scenario they initiate; be it superhero, police, etc. The most important thing for the beginning of the year is to understand that some children may truly not know how to play and recess is the opportunity to engage them in a less stressful arena. We as teachers are, to some degree, performers. The playground should be viewed as an extension of the classroom, not a short planning period where the Teaching Assistant takes them off your hands for twenty minutes. Children love to play. Play with them. Bond with them. Build relationships and give them that metaphorical push on the swing. The class and the bonding of students will be better for it in the long run.
