newsletter Dear Parents, Hope you have had a good week and that I will get a chance to meet and chat with you at the 20th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday.
Adrian Watts
Director of Academic Studies Deputy Headmaster
Next week you will be receiving an email from the school asking for your help. ISHCMC is looking to introduce a work experience scheme for its Grade 10 students and a summer internship programme for its Grade 11 students. The Grade 10 Work Experience will be from Monday 2nd June to Friday 7th June and give our students a whole week of experience in a work place. The summer internship would be at the discretion of the company and the availability of the student but the goal would be a minimum of two weeks through to a month in the work place. If you think that you would be able to offer a placement for an ISHCMC student then please let us know when you receive the letter. We believe that having a programme like this will give our ISHCMC students invaluable experience, help them make better choices regarding universities and give them an edge on their university and employment applications in the future. Schools that offer such opportunities state that this gives student a better insight into potential careers, contacts within industries that interest them, the opportunity to see how classroom work links to the workplace, the expectations and etiquettes of potential employers in the work place and information about what is needed to gain successful entrance to the work place in the future. It is hoped that we will be able to place all our Grade 10 students in work places that reflect their interests or ambitions. Thanking you in advance for your support and in helping to make this a powerful learning opportunity for our students. Yours Adrian

secondary news Dear Parents, I am writing to inform you of an additional type of assessment that Grade 6- 10 Secondary students will be undertaking in April: a formal examination. We feel that ISHCMC students will benefit from having experience of this type of assessment for numerous reasons.
The majority of subjects across the MYP will hold examinations in April. The content of the examination will cover the skills, knowledge and understandings that the students have so far learnt this academic year. The teachers will be expected to provide their students with the strategies needed to succeed in the examination and Life Skills classes will also provide additional support. None of the examinations will have the grades weighted. They will be regarded as another piece of assessment evidence teachers use to identify the student’s grade. Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries. Michael D. Roberts Secondary Principal
Jakarta GIN Conference 13-16 February 2014
“Dare to Care” was the challenge given to us at the Jakarta GIN conference. At the conference we were given the chance to visit and take part in some of the community projects in which GIN groups at The Jakarta International School are working. We were inspired by talks by Austin Gutwein – Hoops for Hope (www.austingutwein.com) and Zach Bonner – Little Red Wagon Foundation (lrwf.org), who are great examples of how young people can make a difference. They encouraged us to find an issue we are interested in and use our passions to help make a difference. We also had the opportunity to share and reflect upon our own GIN experiences and future plans with students from other schools. During the GIN conference Jakarta International School bought some of the culture of Indonesia to us. We learnt to play the angklung and were totally impressed by some local dance performances. GIN conferences provide the opportunity to be inspired by others to take action on local & global issues. Our hope is that the strong GIN culture in our school continues and that many of you will seek out future opportunities to take part in GIN groups and GIN conferences, and that you will understand the responsibility we each have as Global Citizens to play our part to take action in helping solve Global Issues.
Sports News Congratulations to our girls’ and boys’ junior football teams for their outstanding efforts in today’s season-ending SISAC City Championships Tournaments! The girls traveled to nearby BIS, and played four matches - winning two, drawing one and losing one, as they finished in a well-deserved 2nd place out of 5 teams - clinching the runners-up trophy with an emphatic 4-0 victory in the day’s final match over CIS. Great job Rhino Junior Girls, and special kudos to their hard-working and dedicated coach, Mr. Kerry Hurst! The boys’ team played at SSIS, and they started slowly with a draw versus AmIS. They followed that with a win over TIS, which placed them in the semi-final match versus the host team and friendly rival SSIS. Our boys defeated SSIS 3-0 to qualify for the championship match versus AmIS again. This time, the Rhino junior boys dominated and won the title 4-1, earning the Champions trophy! Well done boys and the team greatly appreciates the efforts of their superb coach, Mr. Peter Njoku! It was a great day to be a Rhino!! Bob Connor Athletics-Activities Director
Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition Next Wednesday, March 5th, Grade 10 students will be holding their Personal Project Exhibition. This is the culminating showcase of many months of hard work researching, developing and producing their products. The Personal Project is one of the unique aspects of the Middle Years Programme, where students are encouraged to follow their passions, develop their skills and interests and create a truly personal product of their choice. All parents are invited to visit the Personal Project Exhibition in the MPR any time between: 18.00 – 19.15 to celebrate the achievements of our Grade 10 students. The diversity and quality of the final pieces of work, along with their process journal and written reflections, is very impressive indeed and we would certainly encourage you to attend.
