Principally Speaking Dear Sunbird Families, It seems like school has just started, but we have already completed our first quarter! We had a great response for conferences, but if you were not able to attend parent conference day, please know that it is not too late to meet with your child’s teacher regarding academic progress. You may call or email the teacher to set this appointment. We also enjoyed a great turnout for our first Math Night—kudos to the team that organized this, Mr. James, Ms. Christine, Mr. Mark, and all the staff for their support of this fun-filled, learning event. We have many more fun family nights that are scheduled for this year and look forward to the role that the school can play to maintain a strong connection between school and home! Nhà trường đã nhận được sự hưởng ứng rất tuyệt vời của quý phụ huynh dành cho ngày họp phụ huynh, tuy nhiên nếu quý phụ huynh nào chưa đăng ký tham dự buổi họp, thì không quá trễ để quý vị có thể gặp gỡ và trao đổi với giáo viên về tiến bộ trong học tập của các em. Phụ huynh có thể điện thoại hoặc gởi email cho giáo viên để đặt thời gian họp. Toàn trường rất thích thú khi tham dự Đêm Toán học tuyệt vời- được tổ chức bởi nhóm gồm thầy James, cô Christine, thầy Mark và đã nhận được sự hỗ trợ của tất cả nhân viên nhà trường cho sự kiện học tập này. Thank you to all the parents who attended our first quarter Parent Power Coffee Hour. Some of the issues brought up were regarding the cleanliness of bathrooms, mosquitos, swimming times, and ASAP offerings. These are the actions we have taken to try and support these concerns:
Nhà trường cảm ơn tất cả quý phụ huynh đã đến tham dự Buổi Họp Mặt Phụ Huynh đầu tiên. Quý phụ huynh đã góp ý một số vấn đề liên quan đến vệ sinh của phòng tắm, muỗi, thời gian bơi và hoạt động ngoại khoá. Sau đây là những hoạt động mà nhà trường sẽ cố gắng thực hiện và giải quyết các mối quan tâm như sau: • Giám sát chặt chẽ hơn việc kiểm tra các phòng tắm • Thêm nước khử mùi cho những nhà vệ sinh đã được sử dụng • Phun thuốc diệt muỗi hàng tháng • Giảm nhiệt độ lạnh trong lớp khi các em học bơi trở về • Thêm những nhà cung cấp cho các hoạt động ngoại khoá và đăng ký hoạt động ngoại khoá trên mạng Rất tiếc, nhà trường có số lượng ít các giáo viên tham gia hoạt động ngoại khoá như câu lạc bộ cầu lông hoặc bài tập về nhà. Theo tiêu chuẩn của trường quốc tế, mỗi nhân viên sẽ tham gia hoạt động ngoại khoá một ngày/ tuần của một học kỳ. Với số lượng nhân viên ít, nhà trường không thể cung cấp một lượng lớn các hoạt động ngoại khoá và buộc lòng chúng tôi phải nhờ vào những nhà cung cấp khác để có đầy đủ các hoạt động ngoại khoá trong một tuần dành cho các em. Nhà trường đánh giá cao những phản hồi của quý phụ huynh và chúng tôi sẽ làm cho trường Quốc tế Saigon Pearl trở thành một nơi thật sự thú vị cho các em đến vui chơi và học tập!
• Closer monitoring of bathroom checks • Air fresheners added to frequently used washrooms • Bi-monthly spraying for mosquitos • Reduced air temperature in classes when children return from swimming • Added outside vendors for ASAP’s and online registry Regretfully, we are very limited in the number of staff tended ASAP’s such as badminton or homework club. It is the norm in international schools for each staff member to teach an after school activity for one day a week for one semester. With our small staff, this does not provide a large number of offerings and we must rely on outside vendors to offer a full week’s activities. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to work on making International School Saigon Pearl an amazing place for children to play and learn!

MATH NIGHT
Eyes-on, Ears-on, Noses-on, Mouths-on, Hands-on with Ms Vicky Ms. Vicky’s Kindergarten friends have just finished a science unit covering the 5 senses. We used all five of our senses to explore eyes-on, ears-on, noseson, mouths-on and hands-on learning activities. We most enjoyed being blind-folded and using our noses only to identify different fruits. We learned how important each sense is to our everyday lives and developed a better understanding of how our bodies work.
Các bạn lớp lá của cô Vicky vừa học xong tiết khoa học về 5 giác quan. Các em học sinh sử dụng tất cả 5 giác quan để khám phá: mắt nhìn, tai nghe, mũi ngửi, miệng nếm và tay cầm. Các em thích thú với việc bịt mắt và sử dụng mũi ngửi để phân biệt các loại trái cây. Các em đã học được tầm quan trọng của các giác quan trong sinh hoạt hàng ngày và học được thêm về các bộ phận trong cơ thể hoạt động như thế nào.
Using Math to Build Teamwork and Communication Skills: The first graders in 1E like to talk. No, that’s an understatement. 1E loves to talk! Luckily, we have been working on a math unit that allows for a good amount of talking time. Instead of sitting at our desks, working independently, we have been using our math time to work on cooperative teambuilding and communication skills. During our unit on shapes and patterns we have learned to identify and classify flat and solid shapes. We have also used those shapes to create repeating patterns. Instead of working alone, students worked in groups, teams, and even as an entire class to take on challenges that were presented to them.
Sử dụng Toán học để xây dựng các kỹ năng giao tiếp và hợp tác đội nhóm Các em học sinh trong lớp 1E rất thích nói chuyện. Không, không cần phải báo cáo với cô. 1E thích nói chuyện! May thay, trong tiết học toán chúng em được được phép nói chuyện khá nhiều thời gian. Thay vì ngồi tại bàn học, phải làm một mình, chúng em sử dụng thời gian học toán để học các kỹ năng giao tiếp và hợp tác đội nhóm. Trong bài học về hình học và các hình mẫu chúng em được học để phân biệt và phân loại các hình phẳng và các hình khối rắn. Chúng em còn sử dụng các hình khối này để lập lại các dạng hình mẫu. Thay vì làm một mình, các em làm bài theo nhóm, đội và cả lớp để vượt qua các trở ngại được đặt ra.

School StandardS WHAT MAKES A GREAT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL?
I
frequently have parents ask the question, what makes a good international school? While this question is often complex and has many different facets to the answer, overwhelmingly I respond — the teachers!!! A school is only as good as the teachers that are hired to work with the parents and students enrolled. I have visited dilapidated schools in highly impoverished areas that were still great places for kids because the teachers were highly trained and committed to education as a life vocation. Likewise, I have seen school facilities that are new and quite beautiful, but lack a teaching staff that has the background and expertise to respond to the needs of diverse learners. Parents should arm themselves with a list of questions when reviewing schools and teacher quality as there is a broad difference in teacher training and credentials within the Vietnam international school arena. First and foremost, parents need to inquire about the actual credentials of the teachers hired. Some international schools hire teachers without actual teaching degrees or credentials. It can be confusing to differentiate between short-term English teaching programmes and actual teaching credentials. Parents should not assume that if a teacher holds a TEFL or CELTA certificate that the individual holds teaching credentials that would allow them to teach in a western country — this is

not the case! These certificates are training courses to support English instruction and may be completed in as little as 40 hours for the TEFL or four weeks for the CELTA, and do not have a university degree as a requirement.
Actual International-Standard Teachers To teach in a public school in the US, teachers are required to have a four-year degree from a credentialed university and pass subject-specific state standards tests in their respective teaching field. In the UK, teachers are required to pass tests in English, maths and science before even beginning a teacher-training programme — as well as hold a three-year degree. Likewise, Australia requires teachers to have a minimum four-year degree and pass subject-specific tests. All three of these countries also require extensive field work, with students required to observe master teachers and practice under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. These requirements are assurance that a teacher is properly trained and committed to their profession. A good international school will maintain a teaching staff that meets these minimum standards accepted in western countries. The majority of the staff should be certified in their field and hold a bachelor’s in education from an accredited university.

While these standards are not the only requisites of a high-quality teacher, it is assurance for parents that qualified professionals are teaching their children. In Vietnam, teachers are required to be trained professionals in the national schools — parents should accept nothing less in an international school, and should be very discriminating when enrolling and making a commitment to an international school education.
