Preface O n ce more t he ORACLE A SOCIATIO presents to students a n d friends a n e d i t i o n o f t h e coll ege a n nual. T h e e d itors h ave worked hard to m a ke this volume of the ORACLE the best yet published, and to accomplish this, h ave made some changes i n arrangement and i ntro duced several new features. The cover design w i l l please those who have complained that recent issue of the ORACLE are antiquated i n appearance. A proportionate part o f t h e space has been devoted t o t h e women. The b iographies o f t h e Professors will give som e i nter esting i nformation in regard to the character of our F aculty. Noth i n g o f a vicious n ature has been s a i d concerni n g a n y i n d ividual connected with the college. I n expl anation of this last nev. feature, we woul d say that it is our belief t hat co11ege a nnual of today take too much l i berty in their " roast " column s, especially, when, as frequently h appens, something i s s a i d derogatory to the d ignity and frequently t o the character, of t h e Professors. Such things, i f t h e y do nothing ' orse, teach t h e student to b o l d the Professor i n slight esteem, and the student i s the l oser thereby, for h e acquires m ost from t hose professors whom he m ost respects and loves. \\ e are av. are that t he o mission of these ' roas s " w i l l prove a d i sappointment and a source of criticism to some. Let us say t h at i t req uired n o l ittle sacrifi ce on our part to withhold from publication som e of t h e contributions we bad received, since w e were full y aware that b y o m i t t i n g them we were t a k i n g a w a y just s o m u c h from t he w i t a n d sparkle of our pages. Y e t w e believe that our action w i l l meet t h e general approval, v. b il e we tmst that, as a whole t h i s volume wil l prove to be not unattractfre to all our readers. T H E E D IT O RS

OW in the days when the people of Colby, ( which is in the land of N Waterville, over against the pulp mill ) rose up against the rule of

P rex the Righteous, and t here was much confusion in the l and, the king went up into Fairfield into a high place and prayed, saying, " Lord, there is none more righteous than I i n the heavens above or o n the earth beneath. Send me, I pray thee, a goodly band of men, better than any that have gone before, or will come after, that I may restore peace, and hug myself exceeding!_ for my great tact. " nd the Lord heark ened unto him and sent him the class of 1 90 7 . A n d t h e class d i d wax and increase i n strength in the l and, and discomfited them that dwelt there before, certain sons of Belial called the class of 1 906, and put the-m to flight, even to the tall timber. nd after they had now been in the land for many days, and had won many victories i n ath letics and in sundry other t hings over the Sophomores, and had defied Rob in his sanctuary, and heard Dutchy moaning even as the wind w h ich maketh strange noises, and had had n o F reshman Reading, it came to pass that because the K ing had done evil i n t he sight of the country round about, a new people came to dwell in the land who did act as them that dream, as somnambulists, for verily t hey were dead ones. And the class of 1 90 7 went up against them and smote them, and made them swear a great oath to be servants to them, even to 1 90 7 , and in the name of <I>X made them do many \vonderful works. For many days their hand was not slacked upon them, to teach them w isdom ; but i t was of no avail, for good was not to be found i n them. Now when t he class had been i n the land for two years, i t was seen that many had dropped by the wayside, some because t hey l acked the almighty sheckel, and yet some because they did not stand i n with t h e Profs. B u t the class d i d s t i l l increase i n fame and power, and became a m ighty force in athle tics and in college l ife. nd w hen they became Jun iors and had learned the ways of the Profs. to work them, and of the coords, to dodge them, t hey enjoyed t hemselves exceedingly, and did have their Jun ior Squeeze. And the rest of their deeds and a l l that they d id, lo, are they not recorded i n the chron icles of the secretary, of Dave Young, who dwelleth i n 24 outh College ? _

upon a t i me in a beautiful coun try, t here stood amongst ancient w i l lO\ and maple , on the bank of a sparkl i ng stream, a majestic castle, the wonder of t hose who beheld i t from w i t h out. Nor was t h e interior less won derful a n d mysterious than t h e outer w alls, for so i t ' as decreed by the great Ma ter of Learning that only one yout h from every fifty should earch o u t t h e secrets of t h is noble place. \\ i t b in, t here dwelt a maiden fair to look upon, the light of w h ose countenance \Ya dazzling ave to t hose who understood her moods and were adm i rers of the muses. One evening in the early part of eptember of a certai n year when the set t ing sun wa send ing long quivering shadows over t h e vel ve t lawns, a n d twittering bird d i cu s e d their annual fl ight to warme r cl ime a, t hey ettled t hem elves for the night's rest, a youth of stately bearing and thoughtful countenance approached the outer walls of the castle. There was i n his e . es a light appearance of uncertainty as t hough h e ¡were unfamil iar with h i s surroundings, but the determined set of the boul der and t h e un con cious eager movement of h is graceful body showed that h e had no fear of what awaited h i m. He had heard of the beauty and charm of the maiden of the ca. tle and bad left h i s home a n d friend t o w o o her. For two years the cla of r 908, l i ke the youth of t he star) , has wooed the Goddes of \\'i dam. T h e n came these two-score a!¼i t e n maidens u n t o t he palace, and there found they other maidens before t hem, few also i n number and of i nferior qual ity. Therefore were t hese noble damsels un afraid, and needed no assi tance. nder t he guidance of the V i i se V i rgin from Caribou, they did conquer i n battle, they did eat peanuts the) did recei ve their breth ren gladly at an ancient haunt, even the Armory, w he re also the Sweet i nger from Somer et aunty d id enchant them. Thus i n t he favor of tqe great goddess d i d t hey move on until the end of the year wa come ¡ w hen also, i n obedience to the ancient custom of that land, t hey did make merry even on the lake t h rough a l l that evening. Therefore asse mb l ed t hey in the spring and i n the fall, and the '' i se irgin from Caribou led them to the good decision. Now, accordingly, have the Sophomores cease d fro m t roubling and the Freshmen a re at re t. Afterward came days of labor when ophia instructed her servant , even the Ian of A ngles, the Flying Dutchman, Bruin, Billy Beck, with others to oppress and have no mercy-wh i c h t hey did joyiully ! et did the w isdom of those damsels stand them i n good stead, and t hey still serve Sophia \ i t h i n t he halls of that fai r palace, even Colby.

I STORY has been defi ned as a record of t he progress or decline of

t he F reshman cl ass has neither progressed, as have other classes, nor reached the stage w here it is possible to dee.l i ne. To be strictly truthfu l we must make a few notable exceptions. On the n ight of the Freshman Reception, President Young declined to wear pants, and appeared at M iss Cratty' door robed i n female attire, and attended by his coords. visitor to the class-room o n any day i n t he week w i l l hear t h e Fresh men decline-to reci te. T o continue i n rairness, we mu t own that they have even PROGRE E D i n one direction. They have become adepts i n the art of singing a ong or doffing the cap to a n ineteen-eight man. From these facts, it can be een that n ineteen-n i ne has ome of the attribute of life, and it i bel ieved that by careful nouri. h ment and watery care, should Providence ble s her with a life of ten thou and year , she could ay at the end of t hat period with a much tru t h as she doe now with absurdity, " I am almo t I t ! Freshman History WOMEN

\Vhen they first came on t h i s ampus, Freshmen, they, as green a grass.

A more c a n b e said ?

N D such they h ave remained. Freshmen ! Freshme n ! W h a t These particular Fre h men a r e o ord i nary, o l i ke other F reshmen, o utterl y commonplace, that it i , for ooth, d iffi cult to find anything to 'ay about them. They have, to be ure, ho -.rn a dependence on the J unior w h ich at fi rst seemed marvelous to us of 1 908, who have never depended on anything but our own ever reliable wit . H owever, the Fre hmen h ad no uch fert i le brain , o of cour e they did a they were told and couldn't do anyt h i ng without bei ng tol d. They are o commonplace ! Then, too, they are uch t i m id l i ttle t h ing . Dutchy, poor, dear in n ocent ! cared them into fai n t ing-fits and tear . H e did not mean any harm. 1 908 had loved h i glare and hi roar. How will he know the pi tiful timidity of 1 909 ? I n only one re pect do the. e Fre h men d i ffer from the average kind and that one di tingui h ing mark wa not won by themselve but i n tead wa bestowed upon them by c 908. They have never been hazed. Boldly have we defied K ing olomon. \Ne have ' pared the rod. M ay it not prove that we h ave poi lecl the c h i l d by our i n dulgence ! We have clone what we oulcl for 1 909, and we t ru. t that 'olby i gratefu l . to u · for our skept i c i m conce rn i ng 'olomon 's precept. \\ e have tried to esl abli h a new preced ent. \\ now ·ummon c 909 to follow w here we h a ve led, triving a we have striven to do the l.Je ·t t h i ng for 'olby. · o good luck to you as 'oph omore , g i rl· of 1 909 !

The Violin's Swan-Song

O gaily shone the afternoon sun o n Paris streets and h ousetops, and S so joyously sang the birds, and b lossomed the flowers, that one

would never have guessed that the dark days of the French Revolution were at h and-that a cloud too hea vy for the sun's bright beams to d issipate, was hanging over the beautiful city. In a grim, tone-walled cel l of one of the great prisons, a young man was sitting, leaning his bowed head on his hands. The sunshine, throwing dancing reflections through t he grating of b i s w indow on the rough stone floor, brought h i m n o comfort, for at sunset, so his sentence h ad read, he was to die. To be sure, he h ad committed n o crime, but in those dreadful days w hen every man l ooked with suspicion on his brother, and death lurked every> here, i nnocent and gui l ty alike mu. t suffer. Near him on the dusty bench on w h ich he sat, lay a violin which the officers who had arrested h i m had allo' ed him to keep. It was worn and battered but very precious in his eyes-hi s first love and, he was t hi nking b itterly now, his last friend. H i first love it had been from childh ood, when he had nestled it under his baby chin and touched its strings with tender l i ttle fingers. But not his l ast, h is only friend, for somewhere i n its keeping the great city held one who had l i stened to his childish playing and ung l isping l ittle ongs to it, and ever since h ad been his companion in a common devotion to music. It was she who was filli ng all his thoughts on this last afternoon. Her face fl oated before him and her woman 's hand, i n visible but strong, was tightening his heart-strings. They had always been friends, he mused to h i m self, for the bond of their common i n terest had drawn them together. \' hen h i s friendshi p had deepened into love for her, he had ke pt it i n his own heart and never told her of it, for, he had thought, l ife was long and he was young and strong, and he must be willi ng to work and make a name as a great musician, that he would be proud to offer her. o he had waited and she had never known. But now-now he w ished that he had told her. " I f she only knew " he groaned-" I f I could only tell her I love her and say good-bye ! " Dully he l ifted h is head and glanced about him. The sunshine was almost gone from the room now, but one l i ngering beam pointed l i ke a finger of light to the violin by h is side. In the sudden need of comfort he caught it up and laid it against h i s cheek. 1 54

The girl i n the street below l ifted her face rapt with the joy of understanding, for the message-the message was w hat she had l onged to hear ! " C 'est toi, j 'a i . a ime, che rie, " C'est toi ! C 'est toi ! sang the jubilant strains above her" C 'est toi, que le monde commenc;a " Pour moi ! Pour moi ! The viol i n has told her. Nor l ife nor death can keep it from her now. She cannot see her lover but he l ooks down i nto her l i fted face and reads her answer t here. She knows now-he knows, and death has lost its bitterness. The strings of the old viol in throb once again with the love which thu man 's soul is send ing down to her, and then, softly, sweetly, as one who w hispers " good-bye, " the music dies away.
