THE PUGH CENTER ''The Pugh strives to center individua,ls from marg1 i na1 l ized backgrounds such as people of color, trans queer folx, international students, first-generation and low-income students, and others who hold marginalized identities. The Pugh functions as a multifaceted space run by three ,p rofessional staff members. The center is always open and consists of a common room and student club rooms for individuals to relax, study, or host events; staff offices; and a computer station with community printer. The center strives to provide a brave space where individuals can build community, challenge ideas, and find a sense of belonging."

Thank you! It's such a privilege to be back. As President Greene 1ust said, I'm from Waterville, learned to skate in Alfond Arena, started my hockey career, and it's nice to come home. So President Greene, faculty, trustees, Class of 2019, I'm happY, to be with you. I'm also going lo admit, I' rn a bit humbled, even daunted, or if not, intimidated . The commencement speaker-there are so many people out there aoing extroorc:linory things. You heard from one yesterday, Mary Bonouto. People who really make o difference in the world and make o difference 1n other people's lives. But today, you've got a stor teller. And I did brin
my legal pad, and
I did bring notes because I'm intimidated, and I may lose my P.loce But since
notes. You don ' t have tot inK there ' ll be an assignment at t e end of it. You don ' t even have to listen. Jf you're done, you're done. That's the man which is: What now?

I remember my own graduation day. It was a g_rand day( sunny, worm . And o grandmother of a classmate of mine-innocently enough-said that to me. She looked down sweetiy and she said: ";So what ao you plan to do with yourself? " It was vile. She didn't mean it that way. But I attached the subtext of, you know, "You itty- itty little glob of potential, what are you going to do next? "
6
It was like a scene out of Oliver Twist. I was like: "Well, if you please ma 'am, I should like to go lo low school." And that's what I did. I went to law school like so manY, of us who didn 't know what we were going to do did, figuring we woulcf figure it out. And then, I become a lawyer. And I kind of liked it. Watch out for that. If there 's anything worse than a career you loathe, it could be one you 'kind of like.'

For those of you who get jobs you love, Y,ou 'II be fine, the ones who get jobst careers you hate. you 'll figure it out and move on. But the ones that get the ones that aren't so bad , oren t so terrible, "this is kind of okay"-you coula be doomed. Because you may stay there, and you may give up o litfle bit of yourself by staying there .

I found myself in that position. I actually liked the practice of law. Lord knows, it's a noble profession-I 'm in owe of the ones who do it well. The cases are interesting. But the practice of it for me, whatever that thing was, whatever that is that I was meant to do, it just didn't feel like it. I used to work late, and I rememoer walking home at eight thirty or nine o 'clock-as young lawyers do, they work late-and I would go throu h the theater district in

I lust decided I had to get out of my office and walk. Just flee, just walk to walk. And I was proceeding aimlessly through the streets of Boston and all ot a sudden I looked up, and there was the Colonial1heatre. And I thought, you know I wasn 't intenaing to come here, but here I om, and I looked a that building and I ot this sense: Let that building speak to me. And I went inside, the door was OP,en no one was there in the middle of the day, walls ore
oin
to somehow inform me. And then I neord footsteps. And I turned around. an
it was this little woman, she cou cln't hove been about
'
And I didn 't reallY, muc believe in guardian angels, but I thought-and she come up to me and she looke down-I was still sitting in my chair and she said, "May I help you?" And I rooked bacK and I thought, "Just tell her. " Tell your guardian angel, tell her the whole thing. So I went through it: the emotional malaise that I just had, my job, and how when I came into this theater at night the wall spoke, I had the song, and the zealous joy that would come when I'd walk and to leave the theater and something about the arts. So I came back here and I sat down in the building, and I just wanted to become one with the place and see if it would offer me some direction. And she looked down at me and she smiled. And she said: "Get the fuck out of here, you shitty little whiner." And I apologize for the vulgarity, but trust me, this lady would want me to quote her exactly She said: "If you want to figure out your life, go someplace else. This is a place of business." And she threw me out. And I thought, and I think, you know-you've all been here at Col6y, a school surrounded by colleagues, friends, mentors, teachers, a very supportive environment, a communi!Y rooting for your success. The S1reat out there, not so much. There are going to be people that are going to knock you down, tell you you can't. Soy, forget about it. The worst one-I think I ever heard was: "Get real!" You know that there's hardship obstacles, adversity. You've been told that and you' re probably well braced for it. But I remember when I walked away from that theater, I thought, "I'll show her. I'll show that vicious little guardian angel." But I also did something else. I asked myself a question: What brings me joy? Proving myself was good, then being vindicated, that would be nice. But what brings me joy, what makes me feel better? And for me, it was writing. I'd done a little bit in college. I had on idea that I thought would make for a good screenplay. So I thought I would do that. I am going to write ..

Allow me to toke this opportunity to express my most heartfelt gratitude to all the people that hove mode th=s moment possible. Our parents, friends, and families-thank you for the unconditional love and support that you gave to us every step of the way. I wont to particularly thank my parents and family for all the sacrifices they hove mode for me to have made it this far in life. Sue McDougal, thank you so much . Thank you so much Sue for being such a wonderful wonderful mother to all the international students. A huge thank you to the Lugo family for being on exceptional host family and being very supportive throughout these four years. Churchill Elongwe, I always thought that guardian angels were just biblical creatures until you stepped into my life. When my mental and physical health threatened both my life and my academic career, you selflessly sacrificed your time and made sure that I was okay. You gave me purpose and you gave me life. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

Thank you to our professors for providing us with a high quality education and ensuring that we ore all we ll equipped with the necessary tools to fearlessly step out into the world and face it. Thank you also for being on incredible source of emotional support when the academic journey seemed to be unbearable, which 99 percent of the time was unbearable. Thank you for reassuring us that our GPAs ore not the best representation of our capabilities. (Although I wish the hiring companies and grad schools would do the same.) But in all seriousness, I om forever humbled by the enthusiasm, the passion, and the energy with which you hove helped us to grow, constantly reminding us that a C-minus is only proof of the fact that we are only human, and we will make mistakes, but what defines us is how we handle these mistakes. Professor Moloney, it is because of you that today I om crazy enough to refuse to leave this world without finding a cure for cancer, as insane, as naive as that sounds. Thank you for believing in me and always being in my corner regardless of the situation. Professors April Chiriboga and Joshua Martin, thank you for giving me the opportunity to enhance my skills and follow my passion for science. Thank you for the support you continue to show me beyond my academic life. Finally, I want to thank the entire Colby staff for working tirelessly to ensure that we have the best of the Colby experience. We often took for granted the fact that every single day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. we can walk into a dining hall and food would be readily available for us; the fact that our campus is safe; and the fact that we mostly don't hove to worry about the chaotic messes that we often create after a whole weekend of full-scale indulgence. •
But today, I wont to recognize and appreciate every individual who is part of the Colby community and has made our four years in this institution worthwhile. I think it is unfair that I have to summarize my gratitude for you all in under three minutes. Because, honestly our graduation today is a manifestation of your true love and support. I wish I could thank each of you personally. But then we would be stuck here for the entire day.
