Old Colby and New Colby . . . . may the pages which follow have captured for you some of the spirit

t

of Our Colby . . . . a col/e

turned from its home-building

efforts to help win a seco

World War.

r1fhur Galien Eus1fis

Distinguished by his competent, tireless service to Colby as instructor, administrator and Treasurer of the College, without whose able efforts Mayflower Hill might be far less of the reality it is, ....... the Class of 1943 respectfully dedicates this Oracle.

T o the Class of 1943 You were the first class to enter Colby after the war started. You are the first class to graduate with an accelerated schedule. Nothing has turned out to be just as you had planned it. But you are not alone in facing a change of plans; those who share this experi ence with you are numbered in the millions. Colby is dedicated to the belief that the new world that is emerging will be better than the old one. I know that your whole effort will be thrown into the attempt to make this belief and hope come true.

President of Colby College

A cal l to the Army in A ugust took him away, even before he took summer school exams. We m iss his upright carriage with a top of straight b londe hair and that sometimes stern face that always seemed on the verge of cracking a smile. Phil was in the IRC, the Classics Club and the Boardman Society. "MAGICIAl " ( Leonard Caus t ) has definitely shown theatrical talents while a t Col by. Periodically on and off stage, we've let h i m fool us with h i s array of stunts. H e's been i n two Varsi ty Shows and back stage for three years for Powder and Wig. We haven't seen as much of this wavy-haired brunet as we'd have l iked to, but when we have, we've enjoyed it. "PHIL" ( Phi li p Casey) is a character with a capital "C." Seems to spend his time in beefing, making pointed, dryly humorous remarks and e have fun when Phil's around, but being good company. also ha e to adm i t that he shows perception and never lets Life "get" him . Known to have studied hard enough for exams to sleep through them. Army Enl isted Reserve Corps. "HAL" ( Haro l d Costley) may not be the type you'de notice in a crowd, but he is the type who does needed tasks and does tl1em properly. A conscientious worker and a substantial citi zen. He's trained hard for track, made Dean's List his last year. Enlisted Reserve Corps of U . S. Army. "DOC" ( Lowel l ) Cumming came to Colby from the University of Rochester. Like mo t other pre-med majors he's spent most of his time in tbe lab, yet bas remembered to lea e most of the odors there--which may account for his pop ularity. A hard worker with a proper sense of humor. A December graduate. Army E n l isted Reserve Corps. "BOB" ( Robert Dennison ) is tru l y one of the top members of our class, and his record is probably the best balanced of any. Baseball letterman, sophomore vice-president, IRC, SCA, band, basketbal l . . . election to Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Gamma Mu. A good fel low par excellence with a l l the substantial qualities life will ever demand. A December graduate· Air Corps, Army Enlisted Reserve. "TOM"· . . or "Thomas W. Farnsworth, V," a Son of Colby who started off with a bang in half a dozen activities, narrowed the field to Colby's tl1ree publications, then concentrated on his chief i n terest, the 1943 ORACLE. "Mir baby" he says. Usual ly corning or going or at his typewriter . . . Tom figures he's written over 2 ,000 letters since the fal l of 1 9 3 9 . Some fostered his wedding, December 3 1 , 1 942 . A December graduate. Army E n l is ted Reser e Corps. "OR.MAN" ( Orman Fernanadez) soon became known his freshman year as "That married m an i n Room 1 2 Roberts." Marriage has been h i s major but he's shown himself around Colby enough for us to appreciate the good qualities that make him a welcome addi tion. We're sure he's a good father to his two future Colbyites. A December graduate. "AB E " ( Abraham Ferris) is a Waterv i l le boy, direct from Coburn Classical Institute. He covered loads of territory on the gridiron for four years and was A l l-Maine his j unior year . . . a basketbal l star too, though he i s husky enough to look m uscle-bound. Abe's bri l l iant and ready smile and his gesture-sprinkled speech will be missed by u s all . Civ ilian Pilot Training. Ma.rine Reserve Corps.

He did much dri ing about in a F rd with e'> York license plates though he lived in Florida. "HO IE" ( Howard J hn on) we usua l ly have seen this capable Son of Colby riding n hi bike to or from h is home in Watervil le. But he spent plenty of time in the Libe, for he bit successfully at the Phi Bete hook. A real Mr. Fix-it, Howie l i ke to work on cameras, outboard motors, bikes and what-not. "IRV " ( Irving Li ) is probably the great est esthete on the football squad. He is an authority on 1 avy affairs and refutes all claims that that branch of the armed forces ha been made obsolete by air forces. "JOHN" ( J ohn Lomac) ''the Prince of Portland." Grand to watch on the basketbal l floor· helped bring Colby two State Championships, and captained the team Senior year until December graduation. Surprisingly coached Coburn footbal l and basketba l l the same year, turning out creditable teams. John wants to teach and coach. H e usually does what he waots to. Marine Reser es . "FRED" ( Fred McAlary) a tall one. We almost get tired watching Fred walk about tbe campus. e w i l l never forget his deep oice and his consid erate, purposeful way of " orking. Fred's had scholarship honors and appeared in publ ic speaking contests when he was a sophomore. This l ast year, however, hard work outside cut down on his col l ege activities. Marine Reserves. "JIM" { James McCarrol l ) . His knowledge covering every thing from Brahms' Fourth to the right auricle of rana pipiens, Jim can talk to you about anything you might have to know the reason for. H is good nature supplements his w isdom . They say some people would give you the shirts off their backs, and Jim probably would if you were rooming with him and your laundry hadn't come back. He's had scholarship honors a l l four years a n d been a "regular" i n the band. A December "FRED" { Frederick Main) . We're jealous graduate. because Fred's made a col lege career l ook almost too easy. Seemingly without effort he's been consistently Dean's List . . . earned Phi Beta Kappa and the respect of his fel l ows for being a regular guy. Also, Student Council president . . Dean's List and football for four years. "Who's ho i n American Colleges." A December graduate. ''OLLIE" ( Ol iver Mil lett) . The businessman: \XfLBZ, Colby-at-the-Mike, teachi.ng school at W ins low, assisting i n the Athletic Department footbal l programs and "managing" a part of the Crescent H otel, have, among other things, occupied his time at Colby. No one, especially the Dekes, w i l l deny that he is destined for financial success. And ho w i l l ever forget the case of the freshman who for si..x months thought O l l ie was a professor! " ho's Who in Amer ican Colleges." Marine Reserves. "JIM" ( James Moriarty ) . He was on tbe Dean's List and the SCA for four years and found time to hold fraternity offices, to be the editor of The 11> hite Mule. and work bis way to assistant hockey managership. H i s laugh, his abi li ty to argue but stil l get along with everyone and his sense of humor w i l l be missed by al l . Navy V-7. A December graduate. "DICK" ( Richard de azario) . Dick prepared at Kent's H i l l , or he might never have come all the way to Colby from Jersey. We're glad he did for he's contributed four years as a back and end on Colby football teams. He's spent a good part of his time off the field si nging-as any ATO w i l l agree. D ick's left behind a trail of colorful expressions . . . and easy smiles. Army Enlisted Reserve Corps. A December graduate. "LE " ( Leonard Osier) . "As I Remember Him": handing out reserve books i n the Jibe. But Len' hit Deans List regu larly, which shows ome work on the other side of the l ibe counter. A regular in the International Relations Cl ub. Len hasn't shown us all his talents by far. "HAL" ( Harold Polis) . From Standard, Connecticut comes this talented Colby ite. Fre hman year at University of Michigan . . . a top-flight pianist who's had his songs i ntroduced at Colby Var ity Shows and been a feature of many musical programs. Wonder how Jong that prized m oustache w i l l last? Hal's "seen and done," for he's al ready got a broad experience to draw on . A Decem ber graduate.

"AL" ( Alton Stevens ) is a Waterville boy w ho engaged in many activities h is first two years. We note prizes won in several public speaking contests. A likable fel low whose inter足 ests the last two years have taken him off the campus a good "MILT ' ( Mi l ton "Stil lwel l ) . A - 1 part of the time. baseball playing earned h i m a n A l l -Maine rating h is freshman year, and he's shown up well since. A lways seems to be i n a p l ayful mood though when h e does study h e applies h i mself. e'll always remember Milt's habit of keeping us posted on popular songs by singing their vocals up and down the ATO House. Marine Reserves. "QUIGLEY" ( Emmons Taylo r ) is Colby"s authority on anything concerning sports, has compiled data for years back i n every known sporting fiel d . A quiet fel low to those who don't know h im , he is extremely wel l l iked. We're sure he' l l always carry Colby's banner h igh. "JACK" ( Jack Temmer ) gave up the raising of mountain goats i n Switzerland to come to this country. If p ker is an indication, Jack has adopted the American way. Much credit should go to him for an uphi l l struggle with our habits, our customs, and our American sense of h umor. A De足 cember graduate. Army E n l isted Reserve Corps. "H ENRY" ( Henry Tilton ) i s another senior who left us after completing seven semesters. I n August 1 94 2 he stopped h is pre-theological studies to go with an American Ambulance . we envied h im Corps to Egypt. Slender Bame-topped . the store of knowledge prodigious amounts of reading brought him yet found i t easy to join with him i n enjoying l i fe. "LOU" ( Louis Vo lpe ) . Qui ncy's gift to Colby and f otbal l . Jn four years Lou gained the ice-presidency of hi senior class and the captaincy of the football team-not to mention A l l -Maine honors. H i s deliberate way probably helped him to a place i n " ho's Who in American Coll.eges," but we know from experience how m uch Lou enjoys a good time. A December graduate. Army E n listed Reserve Corps. "ANDY" ( Andrew Watson ) loves to manage. Did so for the Glee Club, the basketbal l , football and baseball teams. Thrived on committee work, headed the Outing Club his senior year. Val uable to the SCA and certainly to the Chapel Quartet. THE 1 943

by Tom Farnsil'orth Herewith the 1 943 ORAC L E staff presents its yearbook. We've tried to do our best with a task we f elr was important. The job represents our attempt to capture some of the l i fe-spirit of our class and of Colby ; we felt it important because more than any other ro date our clas had grown up with World War II and stands to be most af fected by it. Because we knew that we could count on nothing after December, e began work as Colby swung into its fi rst ful l -dress summer term and Mr. Gherin arrived on the scene to begin making portraits. In Photo # 3 on the facing page you see him at work. Mr. Gherin gave us a great deal of good advice and encouragement ; we have appreciated these and his ful l cooperation on the phoro graphic side of this yearbook. Mr. Russel l Knight, representing the Stobb Press, visited the campus several times during the summer and fal l to give invaluable help in designing the book. I n Phoro # 2 b e looks o n a s our faculty adviser, Mr. eepe, signs the publication contract. The first picture shows how the editor was bearing up under the strain along about October when things began moving. As sistant Editor Stan Frolio is one of the many deserving of thanks. He did each of his assignments well . In Photo #4 he's going over one of them with the editor. Manag ing Ediror Dick Wescott handled well the large job of booking group pictures. ( Photo # 5 ) . We could never count on running i nro our Women's Editor, Marg McDougal, but we did often enough to get all the ma terial we asked for-with treatment that was first-rate. Mostly she was "somewhere" with Hugh Beckwith as in Photo #6. Business Manager Ralph Sawyer and his assistant, Walter Maxfield, did a fine job of l ining up advertisements, in spite of more difficulty than usual. We even managed to get a picture of them. ( # 7 . ) Each year there are quite a few unnamed individuals wirhour whose help Colby's year book would never be completed . We'd like

r o say a word o r s o about some o f them. For the write-ups in the "Senior I nformal" sec tion we were ably assisted by Bill Finkeldey, Harry Levin. Bob Sillen, Bill Reifel Joe Srrup, Jim Moriarty, Walter Maxfield, Berry Tobey, Hope-Jane Gillingham, Nancy Cur tis, Lorraine Desisles and Marcia Wade. As usual , our Publicity Di rector Mr. Joseph Coburn Smith, contributed a great many fi ne photographs and Hope Mansfield got us most of the candids of senior girls. Francis Shannon did fine work for rhe Women's Editor and John Cal lahan, Clayron Currier and A lex Dembkowski helped with many routine tasks. Alex fi nished rhe year as Assistant Editor when Stan Frolio was drafted. To each of these people we mention i n this write-up, plus others we may have missed, a "thank you" is due. We do ap preciate sincerely their he! p in developing what we hope you w i l l consider an inter esting appendix to the campus-history of a fine class and one we are most pleased to represent.
