ANNUAL OF COLBY COLLEGE IN

WARTIME

You have had ro pur up with many rhings in your life at Colby which rhe college would gladly have spared you.

Firsr the army

rook a number of your clas mares then ir rook some of your favorire insrrucrors, then ir rook over some of the buildings on the old campus.

The accelerared program ha lefr you with less leisure the

suspension of inrercollegiate arhletics has taken away a source of interest and amusemenr and the college bus has roo frequendy dis regarded your wishes when you were eager ro go down rown in a hurry. Bur you have invariably come up smiling and have taken even the walk ro rown in your stride.

Our hats are off ro you, 1944 !

We

know you will meet in the same buoyant spirir the tragic problems rhar confront your generation.

We are sure that wherever you go

you will align yourselves with the forces that make for honesry and rolerance.

We are confidenr rhat you will stand om ro the last

against the ignoranr and vicious tendencies that would keep our sociery divided against itself.

We believe that your college training

will help you ro see through all hypocrisy and deceit and that your courage and energy will enable you ro see your own purposes through. J. $. BIXLER.

..."Who took the khaki and the gun Instead of cap and gown."

To our former classmates now serving in defense of Country and College, the Senior Class respectfully dedicates the Oracle of 1944.

The Colby Panhellenic Council is a unit of National Panhellenic Congress.

The

purpose of the larger group is ro encourage, on campuses where women's national Greek letter societies are functioning, a striving toward a high plane of fraternity life and inter fraterniry relationship, cooperation with college authorities in their effort to maintain high social and scholarship standards throughout the college, and the utilization of the council as a forum for discussion of questions of interest to the college and fraternity world. Colby Panhellenic, composed of two delegates from each active sorority on campus, has this year endeavored to conduct rushing as fairly as possible by deferring the rushing period until the second semester in order to prolong the opporruniry for acquaintanceship between freshmen and upperclass sorority women. The activities of Panhellenic this year have included teas for college women, the enter taining of service men at Open House parries, and a card parry for college people and residents of Waterville.

The ORACLE of 1 944 is, as is the Class of 1944 curtailed by the war. Some features ha e been cut down, and others entire l y eliminated. The Board has attempted, however, to make quality recom pense for quantity and to present an accurate picture of Colby College in wartime. We have been aided i n our efforts by many people and to them a ll we wish to extend our t hanks and appreciation. To Mr . Russell C. Knight, vice-president of Stobbs Pre s, who has guided us through the major and minor problems of editing, To Professor Arthur W. Seepe, who again proved himse l f a capable and understanding faculty adviser, To Bud Gherin, whose photography was a tri umph over wartime restriction , To our Business Staff, especially to the Business Manager, Rae Gale w ho worked untiringly to secure the requisite amount of advertising, To Mr. Joseph C . Smith for his generous loan of pictures and helpful suggestions, To our otherwise unacknowledged staff of underclassmen w ho have worked enthusiastically and efficiently o n i m portant but sometimes uninteresting jobs. The ORACLE Board ,ha worked hard to produce the best year book possible and we hope that e ach graduating student will find i t a true representation of the Colby he has known.
