We
had
two
alternatives: We could study, or we cou l d hit the books.
This was the year of /'// Walk A lone and
"Has he maybe got a friend?"; of V-Mail and sudden tri ps home for farewells.
Mai l call became the
high poi nt of each day. But it was also the year when we fou nd new enjoyment in the many l ctures and concerts offered u s and new chal lenge i n our program of studies.
The social side of college life
took a backseat, b u t we still managed to have two formal s during the year. It was a time for serious C L ASS OF ' 4 7
thi n k i ng, and i t was a time for us to refurbish our sense of humor and recogn i ze our own small i n con ve niences
as
remarkably
i n consequential-and
laughable. We returned to Waterville our Jun ior year to find O n our first day at Colby, i n September 1943, we watched the 21st. C.T.D. as they assembled on the lower campus to sou nd retreat. We came to a col l ege depleted of col l ege me n and re p l ete with Army Air Force students. AsFreshmen, we attended classes on the Hill and met with the cadets on wee ke nds .... for that well-rou nded experi ence deemed so neces sary for a li beral education. 21 College Ave n u e meant the
U. S .O. t o u s ; although our u p perc lass
fri e n ds often sighed nostalgical l y and tol d us won drous tales of its previous occu pants. We listened to the ir raptures of the "good old days" and sti l l fou n d the Squadron dances quite adequate su bsti t utes . .... "When ignorance is b l iss .... " .. We soon learned the questionable art of "dou ble-timi ng i t" to the Hi ll-a s k i l l of no l ittl e importance, espec ially toward the end of the month. We sang I've Got Sixpence and Gee Ma! I Wanta to Go Home on the Blu e Beetle, and we disc ussed the compara tive merits of C-9 over C-12. Our Johnny-Come-Latelys l eft us i n the spring of 1944, and the follow i ng year fou n d us, as Soph-
a changed scene. The men were begi n n i ng to come bac k, and although they were still outn umbered two to one, it almost seemed as if the campus was swarm i n g with them. Col by Week-e nd that year was the time desti ned to play the l eadi ng role in the reali zation of the oft-repeated refrain of Col by men the world over, "See you the first Colby Night after the war." We awaited the
big time with
antici pation, and we weren't disappointed.
We
watched a Col by eleven beat Bowdoin in true Col by Weekend sty l e, and we fe l t some of the exc itement as old friends met once more. I n February, many new faces ap peared on the campus walks-more veterans return i ng to school. We had read the vast tomes of material on the return i n g veteran with al l the conflicting pros and cons, but we watched the water fights and heard the ghostly peal of the A TO bell in the middle of ·che n ight, and we knew that Col by had c laimed her own. Fratern ities began stirring, the men's dorms he l d open houses, base bal l was i n the spot l ight, a n d the Col by grapevi ne was working overtime.
We w e re q u i te amazed to fin d ourse l ves S e n i o rs. That first day, three years b efore, seemed like on!y yesterday. For the first time si n ce our arriva l , ou r col l ege
had
a
regu l a r
footbal l
sched u l e.
We
cheered fou r years' worth, for win or l oose, it was our team.
Between c lasses, we met over coffee in
the station or at the James whe re we d i sc usse d the respect i ve arguments s u p port i n g free w i l l and deter mi n ism, a n d de bated the poss i b i l i ties of De kes recap t u ri n g their p u r l oined goat from the A TO 's. Fol l ow ing Christmas vacation, there was a rapid succes sion of fratern ity dan ces, a n d the n came Winte r Car n ival , compl ete w i th the Q u een a n d cou rt a n d n o Sat u rday c lasses. Thi s year, the men moved to Mayflower Hil l as West Hal l , East Hal l, a n d Roberts U n ion were suc cessfu l l y read i e d for ocu pation. W i th c l asses being he l d on the Hi l l secon d semester, we came c l ose r than ever to the f u l l rea l i zation of the Mayflower Hil l dream. The c l a_s of 1947 boasts several firsts.
N ota b ly,
the women of o u r c l ass were the first, a n d so far the on l y, to l i ve on Mayflowe r Hil l through a l l fou r years. We hope to b e the first c l ass to have our Comme nce me n t exerc ises i n Lorimer Chape l . We were often su bject to d i sru ptions a n d i n con ve n i e nces that seemed to d e p rive us of what we imagi n e d a n ormal coll ege l i fe shou l d be, and yet, l oo k i n g back, we can ap preciate the u n ique op por t u n i ty we had in com i n g to col l ege at a time when each year represe nted a com p l ete l y new exper i e n ce. Whe n we rem i n isce about o u r days at Col by, those of us who e n te red in the fal l of

After Ver mont scored early in the ga me, Dom P u i ia ca rried two men on his back over the goal for the fi rst touchdown, a n d George MacPhelemy took a pass from Capta i n Ray Verrengia for the second tally. Harry Marden k icked the extra point after the fi rst touchdown. N e l son N itchman's Coast Guard team p roved too m uch for a n i n j u ry-ri ddled M u le at New London i n the third game, as they scored 18 poi nts i n the fi rst half a n d hung on for an 1 8 to 1 2 win. Cam i n iti scored Co l by's fi rst touchdown on a deflected pass, and B i l l M itche l l recovered a fumble for the other touchdown. A n 84 yard punt return fo r a touchdown gave Amherst a 13 to 6 win over Colby in the l ast pre series game. John M u lhern took a Verreng ia pass for the Colby touchdown in the fi rst h:::i lf. The Mu les tra i l ed 7 to 6 at intermission, and p layed good footba l l all the way before losing on the break away run. O:ie p l a y cost Colby the Bowdoin game 6 to 0 before a fine Co l by weekend crowd at Seaverns
Field. Both tea ms had cha nces to score in the first ha lf, but fourth-down passes fa i led. In the third period, Bowdoin intercepted a pass deep i n Col by territory and connected on a pass for the game's only score. Co lby trave led to Orono for the Maine game a n d p layed in a snow storm. Maine struck over g u a rd for a touchdown that p roved enough to win. In the third period, a Maine back fumbled a pass from center on his own four, and George Mac Phelemy recovered for Co l by. Verrengia d rove over for the touchdown, but the point was no good. A bad pass from center, late i n the game, gave Maine the ba l l on the Colby 1 5, and they scored a second time and added the point for a 1 4 to 6 final score. The weather was adverse at Lewiston a l so, as Col by, faced a g reat Bates team in muck and rain. A determi ned Col by team was stopped on the Bates three i n the fi rst half and held on until the final two m i n utes before Bates d rove over for a 6 to 0 win that gave them a n undefeated season. Capta i n Ray Verrengia, center George Toomey, and guard Dom P u i ia were sel ected on various A l l M a i n e teams. The three p layed fine footba l l a l l season. U n noticed by the critics, b u t a l so con tri bu ting plenty to Col by's showing d u ring the season, were veterans Phi l Ca m i n iti i n the backfield, and George MacPhe lemy at end. Coach Lewis resigned in December, leaving the post open for the third time in five years. The squad loses only four men by g raduation and might surprise the experts a nother season with added experience to he l p the freshman mem bers.
