Its second varsity season provided the Colby ski team with a c:hanc:e to match the success of its outstanding debut In Division U last year. Once again. the women's team won the Eastern lntercoleglate Skiing Association t>lvlsion D Championships hosted by � et Sugarloaf CJSA. The men's team was nearly as successful, finishing • strong third in the Division n Championship race, only four points behind the winning team. As In the 1987 season, both the men and women qualified and competed with distinction In the Division I Championships. Coach Rick Tonge said he believes that the White Mulea' success this year has come mainly from its depth and balance In both the Alpine and Nordic events. The Colby women dominated Dlvl8ion n al season in both areas in nearly every meeL In the Alpine events, top newcomer Ellen Paine proved to be • vak.mble asset to the White Mules for slalom end giant slalom races. She consistently placed among the top three finishers In every meet and closed the season with top three In slalom end giant slalom com petition; she also made a fine showing In the Division I ChBmpionships in early March. The indoor tracl< and field season was a marvelous one for senior 5000m runner Bill Derry, who climaxed his season by winning All American honors with a 6th place finish in the NCAA Div. Ill cham pionship. Senior co-captain David Duane just missed qualifying for the NCAA competition for the second year i n succession in the 55m hurdles. Duane came within 5 hundreths of a second of the qualifying time but just couldn't break the magical barrier. Nonetheless, he had a solid season finishing second in the State meet, third at the NE Div. Ill meet, and 6th at ECAC's. Several underclassmen performed admirably as well. Sophomores Andrew Richter (500m-6th In NE Div. Ill, 4th in ECAC's) and Stephen Pischel (pole vault-13'6", 4th i n State meet) and freshman Kent Thompson rose to the challenge of intercollegiate ·

competition, one of the best to come along in years. Thompson lived up to Coach Jim Wescott's expectations, establishing himself as an up and-coming miler i n New England. Although Colby women's track was unable to send any competitors to the National meet, it was a team of impressive talent. Sophomore Jill Vollweiler captured first place at ECAC's with a time of 10:14.68, falling short of the national qualifying time by 4/100 of a second. Junior long and triple jumper and hurdler Robin Trend shattered the 600 yard run school record; senior co-captain Linda Roberts finished 2nd i n the 5000m at the ECAC meet; senior 55m and 200m sprinter Whitney Gustin scored in every meet. Other leading performers include soph omores Melanie Brockway (55m hurdles) and 20lb weight thrower and Lisa Bove, who increased her throw by nearly 4 feet over the season.

Colby's young, inexperienced men's hockey team came to life in late January, knocking off Williams, Middlebury. and nationally ranked Norwich al home, and beating Hamilton on the road to add an element of promise to what had been a season of despair. Prior to the four-game winning streak, the team had lost I 0 of 11 games after an 8-2 opt>ning victory to the University of Connecticut - five of

those defeats by one goal. The Mules, trying to preserve a shred of hope for the final ECAC playoff spot,

battled St. Anselm's to a 0-0 tie after three periods - the first time in 63 years of

intercollegiate hockey that Colby and an opponent had gone 60 scoreless

minutes. St. Anselm's won, 1-0, ending Colby's bid for a fifth consecutive

victory. And while Colby finished the year with a disappointing 7-15 record, the poorest in coach Mickey Goulet's decade at the helm, the January stretch provided the team with a basis on which to build toward future success In the ever-improving ECAC Division II field. One highlight of the season was the December trip to Germany and Swit

. zerland, where the White Mules played five games, going 2-3 against swift skating teams from Zurich and Germany In what became a marvelous op portunity to experience both European hockey and culture. Players such as senior tri-captains John McCarthy, Joe Bisson, and Matt Elders along with senior right wing Rick Angeli. did their best to guide the Mules.

McCarthy again led Colby defensemen in scoring (nine goals and 11 assists),

making the ECAC All-Star second team, while Bisson couldn't overcome a lingering shoulder problem. Elders had a solid season at left wing, tallying nine

goals and 11 assists. Junior left wing Quinn Moyer put impresselve numbers on

the board. Several others, such as junior center Dave Loser (five goals and 12

assists), junior defensemen Neil Menard, sophomore goalies John Guerreiro and

Jim Reduto, sophomore center Mark Smith (eight goals and 10 assists), soph

omore defensemen Scott Rickards and freshmen such as Todd Urquhart (eight goals and seven assists), Bill Jason (five goals and nine assists), Chris Caponi, Niles Parker, and Bruce Fougere, return next winter.

The men's track and field team capped Its 1988 spring season, which started with a trip to Puerto Rico, with a 4th place finish in the NESCAC Championships. All American BUI Derry set the tone for the day as he won the first event (10.oo<>m) establishing a new Colby record of 31:14.3. This victory inspired 15 team mates to personal bests and a strong team finish. At the season's end many athletes re ceived recognition for their contributions to the college. David Duane was the re cipient of the Bixler Award for four year contribution to Colby track and field, Der ry received the James Br.udno Award as the team's most valuable runner, Matt Reilly was named the team ·s most- val uable field event performer receiving d'.e Mike Ryan Award, and J(elth Spear Wils chosen for the Cy PertcJns Award as team's most lmproVed dilete. � and Rellly both re(eived awards at the f'frst annual Colby "C" Club bna'lch as well Toby Vos and Jlt\ajester Stewart. were elected coqptains for the 1989 outdobr track and field team. The Cotby baseball team entered the spring of 1988 with high hopes after competing In the ECAC Championship game the previous spring. A return trip W8$ not to be, however, as the Mules droppeCI their first nine outings in Florida and ne\fer ftily recovered. Despite being •ery competitiVe in Vir tually aO contests this year. the team ended at 921. Colby did manage to win Its second con secutive CBB title (tyipg with Bates). and finished at 6-6 versus NESCAC competition. Included also were eight one-nm losses, all In helirtbreeking fashion. Colby's two wins over Bowdoin were both Im pressive displays of the Mutes hitting prowess. Captain Jamie Arsenault had his number retired and slugged his way to an 8 homerun, 34 RBI season, whUe fellow senior Michael Burr stroked 7 homeruns and hit .357. The men's tennis season was very suc cessful this year with losses only to Bates, Brandeis and Conn. College, the top three teams In New England. Significant wins were over an Improved CIMO tum end Bowdoin-twice against each team. Another tough victory was over a very strong Bab- son equad. T h e other d a y , I s a w last year's commencement speaker, Scott Lainer, w h o w a s u p for a visit. When I asked h i m if i t were true that most class speakers wrote their speeches in a stupor o n t h e night before graduation, h e told m e that the person who gave the address his freshman year did just that. The person who gave the speech the next year spent two nights putting it together; the following year, he said, the address was the product of three nights' of labor, and he estimated that he spent approximately four nights on his. I've read those speeches; and they were all good. Well, I've been working on this damned thing for what seems like an eternity. I just hope that the amount of time one spends writing is not inversely proportional to the speech's appeal to the audience. Seriously, I want to thank my fellow classmates for bestowing on me what is perhaps the greatest honor of my life. Although there have been moments during the last few weeks when I hav'i! looked upon the speech as an extra burden to bear before graduation - as if passing my natural science requirement was not enough - in my cooler and more rational moments, I have thanked you for giving me the opportunity to immerse myself in a unique educational experience. I have been forced to sit down and contemplate both the meaning and the value of the past four years - for some people, I guess it would be more accurate to say five or six years. To be sure, this contemplation - in the true liberal arts tradition - has raised more questions than it has answered; but, nonetheless, I recommend that anyone who hasn't had time to put the undergraduate years into perspective do so before the immediacy of the experience is lost. I know we all have our own personal reasons for loving our parents as we do. One of the many reasons I love mine so much is that they keep me humble. When I called to tell them that I was elected class speaker, my mother said, "That's nice, dear, but I didn't know that many people knew you." My father, ever the confidence-builder, then chimed in, "Knew him? I didn't think that many people would want to listen to him for 1 5 minutes." We are part of a generation that enters the "real world" under indictment. The grand jury of public opinion thinks there is enough evidence to convict us of being selfish, money-grubbing poor excuses for human beings. Editorial writers and social critics point with a certain degree of smugness and superiority to the differences between the products of the Reagan era and those of the generations that immediately preceeded us. While the children of the '60s will forever be associated with abbreviations like NAACP and SOS, our youth will be linked to less noble abbreviations, such as CIA and BMW. What will the final verdict be? Well, we have a long time to make our case. When asked why he chose a career in politics, President Kennedy - who would have been 71 today had he lived was fond of repeating the advice his mother gave him and his eight brothers and sisters: "From those to whom much is given, much is required." If the example set by Colby students over the past four years is any indication of this generation's commitment to giving back to a society that has given to it, take heart, older generation, you're turning your country and your planet over to a concerned and considerate group of people. One does not have to look beyond the activities of three campus efforts to find evidence that this generation is not guilty as charged. The good works of the Colby Volunteers are known throughout the community. A dedicated and not-so-small group of students regularly presented Colby's best face to the City of Waterville. From ladeling out food at the local soup kitchen to adopting grandparents at local nursing homes, the Colby Volunteers established a record of service that we should seek to emulate in our lives after Colby. "Project Hero," a campus-wide charity fundraiser, was, by all accounts, a huge success. When asked, the entire community responded to requests for food, clothing, and, most importantly, time. A glance at the list of Condon Medal nominees reveals that this class values, recognizes, and participates in efforts to make more comfortable the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. And, the much-publicized work of the Colby Coalition for Political Awareness provides additional evidence for those who refuse to believe that this generation is essentially unaware and uncaring when it comes to addressing global concerns that so very closely affect our everyday lives. Though all may not have agreed with their politics or tactics, the students in the Coalition deserve thanks for making us think. As future graduate students, parents, school board members, academics, or even college trustees. we should continue to fight for the constant expansion of elementary, secondary, and university curriculums. Ours is a nation that can attribute its global appeal to its affinity for diversity. It is, after all, with great pride that we call the United States a melting pot. It seems only sensible, then, thab the syllabi in the classroom of the future should reflect and, to borrow a phrase, celebrate diversity. It is time to recognize the fact that Toni Morrison or anyone of a number of modern authors is as insightful and meaningful as any ancient Greek. We can also learn a lot from the history we have seen made and made ourselves at Colby over the last four years. Because of an accident of birth, the members of this class have been lucky enough to participate in the celebration of Colby's 175th anniversary this year. And, as graduates, we look forward to being part of the huge bicentennial birthday party that will coincide with our class's 25th reunion in the year 2013. In addition, in the past four years, we have been fortunate to participate in various reaffirmations of the philosophy that has made this College a great institution. As freshmen, we observed with pride the Trustee decision to serve once and for all Colby's links with those companies that were partners with the bigoted and brutal government of South Africa. And as seniors, we took pride in the fact that the College struck a blow for free speech with its decision not to restrict for political reasons access to the facilities of the Office of Career Services. In addition, ours is the first class to enjoy an officially fraternity-free campus. At times, the path away from the Greek system has been a tortuous one; however, the rewards at the end of it are great. Students, faculty members, and administrators should continue to work earnestly and honestly to reach these rewards. At the same time, though, efforts to rid the campus of the remnants of the fraternity system must be consistent with the College's embrace of the rights to free expression and free association. The tactics used during the infamous sophomore year spring break room search were resoundingly repudiated two years ago and should never be used again. But our fondest and most enduring memories of Colby will have nothing to do with the political issues I just mentioned. They will certainly be more personal than that. They will include memories of friendships made - but hopefully not ended - at Colby, memories of various experiences - from elaborate "road trips" to seemingly unending "all nighters," and memories of personal triumphs - from finally understanding what the hell was going on in calculus to doing your part on various occasions to make sure that that blue light keeps on burning. And think of all the times over the past four years when you said, "Someday, we'll all look back on this moment and laugh." Well, that someday is here today. So, go ahead and laugh. Over the past few weeks, because I have distrusted the faith you put in me to deliver a substantive message, I have consulted with various professors, a lot of my fellow classmates, and other assorted sources for help. While all the advice I received was valuable, the best inspiration came from an unexpected source - a greeting card that a friend of mine received. The card's message was a crystallization of the conflicting emotions all college graduates feel on commencement day. The card's cover contained the following inscription: "No more papers, no more exams, no more professors . . . " The message on the inside was a little different: "No more keg parties, no more money from Mom and Dad, . . . " And the word congratulations was punctuated with a question mark. Will we be able to make a smooth transition from Colby to the real world? My friend Dean Schwartz half-jokingly suggests that the College establish a half-way house for those seniors who find the transition from Colby to the real world particularly difficult. He wonders how some people will know what's going on on any given day without a copy of "Mooseprints" or a myriad of table tents to guide them. He wonders if people will trash their apartments in the absence of RAs who will no longer be around to tell them what is and what is not appropriate social behavior. It is going to be interesting to see what life is like when we are no longer able to justify all our transgressions by quoting the character from "Animal House" who said something like: "Hey, it's OK; we're college students" whenever he was called to account for something he did wrong. I think the hardest thing about entering the "real world" is adjusting to the fact that we're going to have to learn how to talk all over again, because many of the words and phrases that conveyed so much meaning to us as students are essentially meaningless. Our homes will probably be humble apartments if we're lucky, not "Savoys" or "Ponderosas. " We w i l l n o t b e able t o neglect o u r professional responsibilities t h e w a y we "blew off" work in "Moss for t h e Masses," "Rocks for Jocks," "Gilley History," "Zoo Lit.," or "Hammers and Nails." "Sorry you're down on me, dude, but I'm clueless" might have been all one needed to say to sooth a friend's ruffled feathers, but a co-worker might be looking for something a little more substantial. And although the word "heinous" may have suited a description of a Seiler's meal

on occasion, it's not the all-purpose adjective we've used it as. for yďż˝ur I suppose any graduation address must include at least a few pious platitudes and stale advice. Just listen with parents' sake. They live for this kind of stuff, and they paid about $70,000 to hear 1t today. Let them leave here . . . goes here So, satisfaction. of some sense Don't eat yellow snow Don't spit Into the wind. Don't vote for George Bush in November. (Oops! You think that was maybe a little too political. Naaah.)

Always look both ways before crossing the street. Don't let your daughters marry guys named Spike. Don't take any fashion tips from Colby professors. the end of And always applaud warmly when graduation speakers are done - if for no other reason than to celebrate the speech; and that is what this is, the end of the speech.
